        The Cabinet of Natural History and American Rural Sports: Volume I

      Philadelphia: J. & T. Doughty, 1830. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. Yes. First edition. Volume I. 4to. vii,[1],298,[2];pp., plus 24 hand-colored lithographic plates, and uncolored engraved portrait of Charles Willson Peale. Engraved title page. Contemporary calf boards, rebacked to style in matching leather, and with the original spine laid-in. Text is brown and spotted, the plates less so with very good coloring. Several pages have been expertly remargined at the fore edge (no loss) else this is a very good copy. Gift inscription on the front free endpaper dated 1832. Very rare and among the first American books to be illustrated with lithographic plates. The Cabinet of Natural History was started by brothers Thomas and John Doughty in Philadelphia. It was issued in monthly parts and ran from the end of 1830 until the spring of 1834 However, despite its relatively short life, it left behind an important legacy: Bennett calls it the "first major sport print color plate book produced in America," the text includes firsthand accounts of hunting expeditions of all kinds and are among the earliest of their kind. The plates include the "first colored sporting prints made in America" (Henderson), and most importantly the work includes a significant number of original lithographs by one of the great names in 19th-century American art. The first volume (made up of twelve parts ) was certainly the work of both Doughty brothers, with virtually all the plates being the work of Thomas. "Artistically, Vol. 1 is much the most important, for it contains the original plates by Thos. Doughty, famous painter and founding father of the Hudson River School" - Bennett. Indeed the plates in the later volumes are from a multitude of hands and sources. "The coloured plates are important - being the first coloured sporting prints made in America. There is only one earlier American book with coloured plates that I know of, and that is a treatise on Medical Botany - published in Philadelphia in 1817. Many of these coloured plates of animals and birds are charming, the colouring is soft, correct as to details, and all are well drawn" - Gee.

Large folding map of England and Wales, with original outline colour marking out the county boundaries. Very detailed tables to the left, lower and right edges listing towns and cities with their individual county names, market days, distance from London and populations in the census years 1801, 1811 and 1821. The whole dissected into 25 sections and mounted on linen, folds into original green marbled slipcase with publisher's label to upper board, matching marbled paper to folded end sections on linen verso. of map, one side with a publisher's advertisement. The slipcase slightly worn at the edges, though sound, some light offsetting to the map, but a very good example overall.

      Poggendorff I, 406.- Legendre (Paris 1752-1833) war ein bedeutender Mathematiker seiner Zeit, welcher einige noch heute bekannte Theoreme entwickelte und u.a. unabhängig von Gauss 1806 die Methode der kleinsten Quadrate entdeckte. Internally, 224 views on 112 leaves, both volumes have red marbled end papers, bookplate of the Chester Guild to fpd's, text block edges in gilt. Volume 1, engraved titlepage with frontis of The Menai Straits, ink name at head, repair to margins of the engravings list, not paginated (B-2B1), 99 pp, 44 leaves of plates, 2 plates per leaf, very minimal foxing. Volume 2, South Wales, with engraved titlepage with vignette of Arthur's Stone, ink name at head dated 1840, not paginated (2C-3O1), 68 leaves of text, 67 leaves of plates, mostly 2 per plate. WorldCat)Despite his popularity as an artist, Gastineau relied heavily on teaching, both privately and at various schools, and this income was further supplemented by the regular contribution of drawings to topographical publications. These included eighteen subjects for T. K. Cromwell's Excursions in the County of Kent (1822), thirteen scenes for W. H. Ireland's History of Kent (4 vols., 1829–30), numerous views for Jones & Co.'s Wales Illustrated in a Series of Views (2 vols., 1830–31), and, as late as 1860, he contributed nineteen works to John Tillotson's Picturesque Scenery in Wales.         Arion. Sammlung auserlesener Gesangstücke mit Begleitung des Pianoforte

      Leipzig: Robert Crayen, n.d. (c. 1830). Two oblong octavo volumes comprising seven parts. (118); (120); (122); (122); (120); 120; (ii), 120; (iv), (124)pp. A collection of sheet music and lyrics for pianoforte gathered from a variety of composers, including Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. This set features wrap-around fore-edge paintings by modern British artist Clare Brooksbank on both volumes depicting an interior view of a European opera house. The first volume shows the view from the seats looking toward the stage with the crowd seated; the second volume shows the view in the lobby area with the crowd standing, perhaps at intermission. Lining the upper edges of these scenes are a total of twelve portraits of great composers: there are, in addition to Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, portaits of Tchaikovsky, Strauss, Purcell, Handel, Schubert, Wagner, Chopin, Vivaldi, and Bach. Brooksbank’s work is not usually signed, but this set bears her initials at the bottom left corner of each painting. The set is in a contemporary binding by Charles Hering of green morocco with gilt lyre device in the center of both covers framed by a tooled floral motif. The lyre device is repeated in three spine compartments. German-born Hering built one of the pre-eminent binderies in London’s West End and was quite active during the late 18th and early 19th century. His work is described by Dibdin as having “strength, squareness and good style.” Occasional spotting throughout, else nearly fine. Front inner hinge started in volume one, slight wear to extremities of both volumes. Overall, an attractive set in an unusual format, with an an ambitious and accomplished fore-edge painting.

        THE POETICAL WORKS

      London: William Pickering, 1830. 165 x 105 mm (6 1/2 x 4 1/8"). 30 p.l. (including the portrait), 252 pp. Contemporary black morocco (unsigned, but very possibly by Hayday), covers with border of three blind rules and with large complex gilt lyre centerpiece, flat spine with titling and curvilinear panelling in gilt in the Romantic style, gilt decorated turn-ins, all edges gilt, expertly rebacked, using original backstrip. In a blue buckram slipcase. WITH TWO FORE-EDGE PAINTINGS SHOWING ESHER PLACE, SURREY AND THE BRITISH MUSEUM, RUSSELL STREET. Printer's device on title page, frontispiece portrait of the author. Front joints and extremities slightly rubbed, minor tear in fore margin of one leaf, scattered minor foxing in text, otherwise an attractive copy, the restored binding entirely sound now, and the text clean, bright, and fresh. This volume contains the youthful poems as well as a 50-page biography of Henry Kirke White (1785-1806), who died of consumption while studying at Cambridge. The poems are in the Romantic mode, often strongly imbued with Christian fervor, usually exuding a love of life and the natural world, but sometimes shadowed by the prescient expectation of an early death. The volume ends with tributes to the poet, beginning with verses dedicated to him by Byron, who had a strong admiration for White. The two buildings featured on this double fore edge are shown with considerable architectural detail, and they have a great deal of historical interest. Shown on one side as it appeared in the 19th century, Esher Place in Surrey, whose tower still stands today, was originally built by William Waynflete (1395-1486). The building appears here as a massive castle connected by low crenellated walls to subsidiary dwellings. Waynflete rose from the position of headmaster of Winchester College to become bishop of Winchester and chancellor for Henry VI. An even more famous chancellor of England, Cardinal Wolsey, who served Henry VIII, also resided for a short time at Esher Place. In the other painting on our fore edge is a view of the British Museum. It is not the Greek Revival building of today, designed by Sir Robert Smirke, but the earlier structure on the same spot in Bloomsbury, which was leveled in 1842 to make way for the present edifice. This earlier building, known as Montagu House, was purchased in 1754 to serve as a museum. Our view of it depicts the building looming behind a low wall and amplified with the addition of the Townley Gallery built in 1804-08. The conjectural date of 1830 is perhaps corroborated to a degree by the historical facts surrounding the British Museum buildings, as it seems more likely to find a pre-1842 painting of an existing structure than a post-1842 painting showing a building that had by that time been demolished and that presumably was no longer thought to be architecturally pleasing.

Boards well worn at extremities, spotted and soiled, with a small nick (2 mm) to bottom edges of front board, paper edges browning, pages foxed throughout. Inscribed on the front free endpaper "To J___ B_____ from Col John FitzGibbon Commanding the 2 West York Militia". Tipped in under inscription is a hand written note on ruled paper identifying J. B. as Captain of the Militia in the county of Peel, 1834, the note being written, signed and dated 1936 by a relative of J. B. and covering another inscription in aqua ink, which has transfered some ink spots to the title page. Six catalogues of engraved proofs bound in three-quarter raspberry red morrocco with cherry red pebbled cloth, double ruled at the edges. Five raised spine bands, double-ruled compartments with gilt decorative tooling and titles. Folio measuring 17"x12", with etchings produced on thin India paper and mounted onto thick rag sheets. India paper measures 8"x5.5", with most of the actual image area measuring 3.75"x3". Labeled Parts I- VI, each section contains 16, 14, 16, 18, 16, 16 plates, respectively, totalling 96 plates in all. Exterior in very good condition with slight rubbing at the corners/edges, though boards remain bright and leather, fresh. Contents are very good +, with armorial bookplate of Clarence S. Bemens, a prodigious collector whose book now appear in many public and private collections. Each plate is protected with a tissue guard, and aside from occasional offsetting are bright and clean. A beautiful and scarce volume, probably bound about 1903. Heavy, may require additional shipping.

The Complete 53-Volume Pickering Aldine Poets In Bindings that Have Hardly Ever Been Opened 159 x 102 mm (6 1/4 x 4"). 53 volumes. ESPECIALLY PRETTY POLISHED LIGHT BROWN CALF, ATTRACTIVELY GILT, BY ZAEHNSDORF (stamp-signed on front flyleaf), covers with gilt double fillet border and gilt Aldine/Pickering anchor centerpiece, raised bands, spines in gilt compartments with scrolling foliate cornerpieces and looping stem centerpiece surrounded by a diamond frame of circlets and tiny stars, each spine with a red and green titling label and (at the bottom) a red date label, elaborately gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With 24 frontispiece portraits. Keynes, pp. 37-38. Spines uniformly faded to a darker brown, a number of small nicks or tiny scuffs to backstrips, slight offsetting from engraved frontispieces, but A FINE, AND IN MANY WAYS AN AMAZING, SET, the joints and remarkably bright covers almost entirely without wear, and the text pristine. In 1828 Pickering began to use the familiar anchor and dolphin device employed by the Aldus family of Venetian printers in the 16th century, and he had the same purpose behind his work as did his Aldine predecessors--to provide the public with well printed texts that were nevertheless obtainable even by a person of modest means. In 1830 Pickering began publishing his famous "Aldine Poets" series, a project that, with reissues, covered more than 20 years and involved the production of 53 volumes (not counting reprints), each carefully edited by one of a group of reputable scholars that included Sir Nicholas Harris Nicolas, Alexander Dyce, and John Mitford. Five octavo volumes (complete): [4],ccxxii,122; [4],354; [4],290; [4],348; viii,296pp, with two engraved plates, of the Canterbury pilgrimage and a portrait of Chaucer. Period forest-green half-calf, marbled paper-covered boards, spines in five compartments between raised bands with titles and volume numbers in gilt, top edges gilt, fore- and bottom edges untrimmed, marbled end papers. An excellent set, the bindings tight, the pages clean, bright and virtually free of foxing. A number of marginal, mostly two-word annotations in a very neat hand, in pencil (easily erased without a trace but of pedagogic value, particularly pointing out cases in which notes are to be referred to), in vols. I-III. Tyrwhitt's fame rests chiefly upon his edition of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, published in five volumes between 1775 and 1778. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, "Chaucer’s reputation had suffered because the principles on which his verse depends were no longer understood; it was Tyrwhitt who pointed out [expounded here at length in the Glossary in Volume 5] that final e’s (by his time mute) ought to be pronounced as separate syllables and that the accent of a word was often placed in the French manner (e.g., virtúe, not vírtue)." His scholarship is still held in high regard, and this edition of The Canterbury Tales is considered among the finest ever published.         General View of Niagara Falls

      Original watercolour and bodycolour, within a thick black line border, with and integral outer 'frame' of grey wash, the title inscribed in white on this gray wash 'frame'. Gilt frame. 5 x 7 11/16 inches. 6 1/4 x 8 3/4 inches. A beautifully observed and typically detailed work from Nicolino Calyo in the classical Italian 'veduta' or 'view' tradition. Nicolino Calyo's work is well-represented in American museums and institutions, with examples at the White House, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the New York Historical Society, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Belmont Mansion in Nashville, the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, the Maryland Historical Society in Baltimore, the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in Maryland and the Museum of the City of New York. Calyo was born in Naples, Italy, where he studied art at the Royal Academy. After some time travelling in Europe (he apparently lived briefly in both Malta and Spain) he emigrated to the United States in about 1830, setting up a studio initially in Baltimore. He left for Philadelphia and the north in about June 1835, arriving in New York in time to record the disastrous Great Fire of 16 and 17 December 1835 (two of the resulting pictures were later reproduced in aquatint by by William James Bennett [1789-1844]). Calyo subsequently made New York his home and the city directories from 1838 to 1855 all list him as either a 'portrait and landscape painter' or a 'professor of painting.' By the late 1840s his Italian-born son John A. Calyo (1818-1893) had joined him and they advertised as 'N. Calyo & Son,' historical painters and teachers. The original reason for his leaving Italy had been political, and given this background it is not surprising to find that his New York home became a gathering place for other European exiles (including the future Napoleon III [1808-1873]). Calyo apparently made one significant return visit to Europe, when he travelled to Spain (where he worked as Court painter to Queen Maria Cristina [1806-1878]), but he returned to New York in 1874 and remained there for the rest of his life. Calyo is best known for the watercolour and gouache views of American cities and landmarks (such as the present work) but he also painted scenes taken from the Mexican War of 1846-1848 and an enormous forty-foot panorama of the Connecticut River. He exhibited paintings at American Society of Painters in Watercolor in New York between 1867 and 1869. The style he employs is quite distinctive among American artists, and as Kathleen Foster notes, his Italian training 'dominates his method . . . conditioning his liberal use of gouache, which imparts an opaque, slightly chalky surface to his work, setting it apart from the English style of transparent watercolor more familiar to American artists of that period.' Very good condition apart from some very minor foxing and a few light pencil marks in the margins. 8 5/8 x 11 inches. 10 1/8 x 12 7/8 inches. A rare plate from the "Vues des établissements missionnaires fondés par la communauté évangélique des Frères-Unis." This superbly coloured print is one of a set of four plates depicting the various missionary establishments founded on the island of Antigua. Published by Birmann & Fils, Vues des établissements was intended to raise money for the missionary endeavors of the Moravian Church, a Protestant sect that was originally known as the Unitas Fratrum. In 1741, the Moravians founded its missionary arm, the Society for the Furtherance of the Gospel (S.F.G.), which began its activities in Antigua and other Caribbean islands in the 1760s. Founded in 1822, Cedar Hall, like Gracehill and Grac, was one of several Moravian churches established in Antigua during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century.

Two extra uncolored engravings bound in. Engraved titlepage in each volume. Quarto. Contemporary three-quarter calf and marbled boards, spines richly gilt and with the name "John Paine" stamped in gilt at the foot of both spines. Spine and hinges repaired. Small old institutional ink stamp at upper outer corner of titlepage of both volumes. A few of the early plates in the second volume a bit wrinkled, but on the whole the lithographs are brightly colored and in very good condition, showing none of the spotting or browning usually found. Very good. The first two volumes of this very rare American sporting book, among the first to be illustrated with lithographic plates. THE CABINET OF NATURAL HISTORY..., "an amalgam of natural history, sporting accounts, travel narratives, and practical advice for the countryman" (Reese), was started by brothers Thomas and John Doughty in Philadelphia. It was issued in monthly parts and ran from the end of 1830 until the spring of 1834 when it ceased publication with an abbreviated third volume, not present here, containing but five more colored lithographs. However, despite its relatively short life, THE CABINET OF NATURAL HISTORY... left behind an important legacy: Bennett calls it the "first major sport print color plate book produced in America," the text includes first-hand accounts of hunting expeditions of all kinds and are amongst the earliest of their kind (some of which were reprinted by the Derrydale Press in 1928), the plates include the "first colored sporting prints made in America" (Henderson), and most importantly the work includes a significant number of original lithographs by one of the great names in 19th-century American art. The first volume (made up of twelve parts) was certainly the work of both Doughty brothers, with virtually all the plates being the work of Thomas, but by the time the third part of the second volume had been issued, the partnership had been broken up. Thomas had moved to Boston to pursue his career as a painter, and as of May 17, 1832, John Doughty was the sole proprietor. Evidently Thomas' input was sorely missed, and by mid-summer John was advising his subscribers that unless the level of support improved, he would have to discontinue the publication. In the end the periodical continued for almost another year, with some excellent images from artists such as M.E.D. Brown and James Goodwyn Clooney, before John Doughty's prediction was realized and the publication came to an abrupt halt with Part IV of the third volume. As a painter Thomas Doughty "holds a place unique among artists of this country as having 'initiated the American discovery of the American landscape'" (Looney). His importance as a print maker has yet to be fully recognized or adequately defined for though "there are many prints to which Doughty's name is attached as artist only, there are only a few for which he was initially completely responsible...These are the twenty-three lithographs made specifically for Volume I of...THE CABINET OF NATURAL HISTORY..." (Looney). "Artistically, Vol. 1 is much the most important, for it contains the original plates by Thos. Doughty, famous painter and founding father of the Hudson River School" - Bennett. The Dante contains a colophon indicating that this edition was published on 24 March 1830, the same day on which a monument to Dante was erected in Florence. Both volumes are bound in nineteenth-century vellum, each featuring a hand-painted miniature portrait of the author on the front panel and a scene relevant to the author's life on the back panel. The Dante has a view of Florence, while Petrarch's villa is depicted on the back panel of Le Rime. Spines of both are divided into panels with decorative gilt rules and titles on red sheep labels, lettered in gilt. The Dante volume bears the armorial bookplate of William Hamilton Howley, Archbishop of Canterbury, and both volumes contain the booklabel of Estelle Doheny, the distinguished collector of fore-edge paintings and rare books. Aside from a touch of shelfwear to spine foot of the Dante, this is a fine, attractive set with distinguished provenance.

Gilt frame. 5 x 7 11/16 inches. 6 1/4 x 8 3/4 inches. A beautifully observed and typically detailed work from Nicolino Calyo in the classical Italian 'veduta' or 'view' tradition. Nicolino Calyo's work is well-represented in American museums and institutions, with examples at the White House, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the New York Historical Society, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Belmont Mansion in Nashville, the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, the Maryland Historical Society in Baltimore, the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in Maryland and the Museum of the City of New York. Original dark red half roan over marbled paper-covered boards, upper cover mounted with original green glazed-paper label with engraved title, the flat spine divided into compartments with double gilt fillets. A fine copy of the rare first English edition of this highly-influential work, here with the very rare original prospectus. François Mingaud is variously credited with the invention of the modern leather cue tip or, more narrowly, with the rounded leather cue tip. His skill as a player and as an innovator and introducer of controlled spin to the game of billiards is universally acknowledged. He first shared many of the secrets of the techniques that he developed in his publication, Noble Jeu de Billard published in Paris in 1827.The present work is the first English edition of Mingaud's original: it was translated from French into English and published by the London billiard table manufacturer, John Thurston, who also had engraved plates prepared from the lithographic originals. In the preface, Thurston vouches for Mingaud's assertion that he had come up with "the most brilliant discoveries of modern times ... Fully impressed with the great merits of M. Mingaud's Illustrations, the Translator has felt anxious to lay them before the British Public. He is aware that, to the novice, many of the strokes in the work, may appear impracticable. He has, however, not only had the satisfaction of seeing them performed on his own tables, at his Ware-rooms ... by M. Mingaud himself; but has been surprised to perceive, how readily the results have followed, when attempted, according to the rules laid down, by gentlemen who boasted no superiority of skill." The popularity of Mingaud's work in England can be judged from the fact that it was re-issued in 1831, a second edition was published in 1833 and a third in 1836: all are now rare (there is only one other record of the present edition having sold at auction in the past thirty five years). Klemming har skrivit om Bureus samling av runristningar i "Ur en antecknares samlingar": "Mot slutet af Bures lefnad blef det bestämdt att de af honom samlade runristningarne skulle stickas i koppar. I Kammar-kollegii protokoll för 10 april 1647 finnes härom denna anteckning: 'Kopparstickaren Sigismundus Vogel blef kalladt och med honom handlat, att vthsticka vthi koppar 200 st. runiska saker. Derföre lofwades honom tilhopa 180 rdr.' [...] Denna samling, som är i octav, har ingen titel, intet tryckår, inga rubriker, ingen paginering[...]. Huru många plåtar blefvo färdiga kan nu ej med visshet bestämmas; de äro sedan gammalt numererade, dock med luckor, ända t.o.m. 220, men flera än 203 olika stenar hafva icke funnits i de fem mer eller mindre fullständiga exemplar, som sedan gammalt varit kända". Klemming fortsätter: "I några nya aftryck af de merändels skadade plåtarna finnas 163 stycken; dessa aftryck besörjdes af Liljegren på 1830-talet." Föreliggande samling är ett av dessa.       The memoire in which Cauchy explained the dispersion of light from the undulatory theory of light, and first derived the equation, named after him, relating the refractive index and wavelength of light for a particular transparent material. This memoire was a continuation of his earlier work, of the same title published in Paris in 1830, and was issued as eight parts of his periodical 'Nouveaux Exercices de Mathématiques' (see below). <br/><br/> "The dispersion of light when passing through matter without getting fully absorbed, i.e., the variation of the refractive index <i>n</i> (which denotes the ratio of the velocity of light in vacuo to the velocity of light in matter) with the wavelength, always played an important role in the history of optics since the times of Isaac Newton. After the undulatory theory of light won over the corpuscular view in the beginning of the nineteenth century, Augustin Louis Cauchy proposed an explanation of the dispersion phenomenon, based on the assumption that matter consisted of molecules having finite distances from each other (Cauchy 1836). According to his theory the refractive index <i>n</i> increased with decreasing wavelength &lambda; of the light - <i>n</i> was approximately proportional to &lambda;<sup>-2</sup> - in general agreement with the data on what was later called 'normal' dispersion." (Mehra & Rechenberg: The Historical Development of Quantum Theory, Vol. 1, Part 2, p. 630). <br/><br/> "The first livraisons appeared successively during the year 1835, at Prague. The first is a repetition of the 'Memoire sur la dispersion' [Paris, 1830]. In the second, (besides other discussions) is contained the actual deduction of the formula for dispersion. In September, 1835, [Cauchy] circulated a lithographed memoire on interpolation, (a translation of which appears in the Journal of Science, Vol. VIII. p. 459) in which he gives a calculation by that method, of Fraunhofer's indices for one kind of flint glass, but without any theoretical explanation. In the 'Nouveaux Exercices' for 1836, he gives in detail his most elaborate and exact method of computation, and applies it with perfect success to all the indices determined by Fraunhofer" (Baden Powell: A General and Elementary View of the Undulatory Theory, as Applied to the Dispersion of Light, London, Parker, 1851, pp. XLVI-XLVII). <br/><br/> "In 1826 Cauchy began to publish his 'Exercises de Mathematiques', which was essentially a mathematical periodical consisting entirely of papers written by himself; it appeared at approximately monthly intervals until 1830. He used similar series as vehicles for his publications at later stages of his career; the 'Nouveaux Exercices de Mathématiques' were published in Prague in 1835-36 and the 'Exercices d'Analyse et de Physique Mathématique' appeared at intervals from 1840 to 1853." Probably later papercovered boards reproducing the originals (which nevertheless show considerable age), with later paper spine label. Errata page is present, but lacks the page of ads; page 91 misnumbered as 19 (first state), "carcanet" spelled correctly (second state); all variant points were changed at the printer's before the book was issued. Modest wear to the spine ends, a handsome, very good plus copy. Tennyson's first solely authored book, preceded by two jointly authored volumes. .

Guibel (1744-1839) was an industrious member of the Berlin school who was put on the map as a botanical illustrator by K.L.         A Treatise on the Calculus of Operations: Designed to Facilitate the Processes of the Differential and Integral Calculus and the Calculus of Finite Differences.With presentation to Sir John F.W. Herschel. London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1855. First edition.

      A fine copy of the first text devoted exclusively to the calculus of operations with presentation to one of the fields main contributors - handwritten presentation on the title page: "Sir John Herschel / with the author's complements", and rubberstamp of the Herschel Library Collingwood. Operational calculus, in which the processes of derivation and integration are represented as algebraic operators, was initially developed in France. But, after having been imported by Babbage and Herschel to Cambridge in the beginning of the nineteenth century, the field became a focal point for mathematical research in Great Britain. Numerous papers were published on the subject by Herschel, Gregory, Peacock, Graves, and De Morgan during the 1830'a and 40's. And in 1844 George Boole published his famous paper on the subject - 'On a general method of analysis' which won the Mathematical Medal of the Royal Society. The first systematic extension of Boole's method to this subject was supplied in a paper of 1851 by Robert Carmichael, who was a fellow at Trinity College, Dublin. And in 1855 Carmichael published his 'Treatise on the Calculus of Operations' - the first text devoted exclusively to the calculus of operations. Goedeke X, 10, 20. - Veränderte Auflage des 1822/23 in Aarau publizierten Machwerkes "Die Judenschule, oder gründliche Anleitung, in kurzer Zeit ein vollkommener schwarzer oder weißer Jude zu werden", ebenfalls mit einer zynischen Widmung an Baron Rothschild versehen. Hundt geht als einer der ersten Antisemiten weg von der christlichen Begründung des Jesus-Mordes hin zu einem rassisch motivierten Judenhass; er geht sogar so weit, dass er insgesamt ihm missliebige Bevölkerungsgruppen zu sog. "weißen Juden" (im Gegensatz zu "schwarzen Juden") erklärt; u. a. werden Engländer zu Juden erklärt, da sie direkt von Abraham und dessen zweiter Frau Ketura abstammen sollen. Die "kleineren weißen" Juden hingegen seien unmittelbare Abkömmlinge Abrahams und dessen Mätressen. - Der auf dem Allodialgut Schlieven bei Parchim geborene Johann Hartwig Hundt (1780-1835) legte sich aus unbekannten Gründen den Namen "Radowksy" zu, gelegentlich auch ergänzt durch einen zu Unrecht getragenen Adelstitel. Sein geifernder Hass gegen Juden trieb ihn durch ganz Deutschland und mehrfach in die Schweiz ins Exil, wo er auch als mittelloser Alkoholiker verstarb. - Berieben und bestoßen, bei Band 3 Papierbezug am oberen Viertel des Rückens abgeschabt. First Edition, First Issue [probably a pre-publication author's trial issue], iv, 186pp + 27 various additional inserted pages (erratically paginated) making a total of 217pp., with 5 plates (with one lithographic [by author] as frontispiece, the others engraved), INSCRIBED PRESENTATION COPY from the Author with full signature to Lord Cloncurry, in a FINE FULL MOROCCO PRESENTATION BINDING, elaborately gilt, complete with half title, a superb copy on SPECIAL HEAVY PAPER, London, Printed by Mills, Jowett, and Mills, ["Published by Eff[ingha]m Wilson, Royal Exchange" - this added in author's hand at foot of title], 1830. * See Goldsmiths 26406. Ferguson no. 1375. * The inserted leaves and added manuscript publisher's name indicate that this was a probably pre-publication author's issue. * In his plan "of giving immediate employment to the industrious poor," Light puts forward an elaborate and calculated plan for the employment of the poor in the reclamation of waste lands. This he recommends as likely to be more effective and efficient than emigration as a solution to the problem of poverty, particularly in Ireland. * Alexander Whalley Light (fl.1811-1853), military officer, joined the 25th (The King's Own Borderers) Regiment of Foot on 1 August 1804 and was commissioned as Colonel on 27 May 1825. Prior to that, he received commission as Lieutenant Colonel on 4 June 1811. He retired from active service c.1830 after which he took up residence near Woodstock, Upper Canada, in the initial settlement of that area through an official settlement scheme whereby chosen immigrants were encouraged to settle in chosen areas in Canada to ensure the community's loyalty to the British crown. For this, British naval and army officers at the conclusion of military service were particularly chosen. To facilitate the settling of these men a system of credits, graduated according to rank and length of service, was set up to enable military men to purchase lands from the Crown at low cost. In this way Alexander Whalley Light was the very first to arrive in Oxford County in 1831 and was a very signficant Canadian pioneer (see QUORA website). * PROVENANCE: The recipient of this copy was Lord Cloncurry (1773-1853), Valentine Brown Lawless, 2nd Baron Cloncurry, Irish politician and landowner. He lived at the sumptuous mansion Lyons Demesne and the present book came from that library. Lyons Demesne, Lyons Hill, Ardclough, County Kildare, long considered a "Georgian treasure", was completed between 1785 and 1797. Later, Valentine Lawless, 2nd Baron Cloncurry, spent £200,000 on renovation that included frescoes by Gaspare Gabrielli and three ship-loads of classical art imported from Italy. A fourth shipment was lost when it sank off Wicklow. Treasures which were successfully imported include three columns from the ruins of the Golden House of Nero in Rome, used in the portico, and a statue of Venus excavated at Ostia. Country Life, which gives Lyons the highest status as Ireland's most significant estate, says of it, "There are seven suites in the main house, a self contained guest wing with four bedrooms and staff quarters in the north wing." This famous house, which still stands, is decorated in the Directoire style, of which there are few examples in Ireland.
