        Portuguese Naval Signal Book

This is a dictionary of phrases and words to be sent by means of a Portuguese signaling system. The system employs twenty-nine differently colored and patterned flags and pennants used in varying combinations. The flags are illustrated by hand colored drawings on the first leaf of the book. The following pages assign numbers to types of warships and merchant vessels, commonly used phrases, place names, ports, distances, etc. These numbers would be displayed by the signal flag combinations. This is followed by a lengthy dictionary of words using a double numbering system of signal flags to allow for thousands of combinations. All the words and phrases are in Portuguese. No place, date, or author information is given, but the paper is watermarked “C. Wilmot 1830.” Bound in worn leather over marbled boards.

Autograph manuscript leaf written entirely in John Quincy Adams' hand concerning trade between the US and Western British colonies from 1782-1826

Autograph manuscript leaf in the hand of John Quincy Adams, no place, circa 1830, 1 pp, 8" x 5". The manuscript leaf is presumably intended to accompany a longer document and referencing trade between the United States and its neighboring British colonies, reading: "This review of the commerical Relations between the United States of American and the British Colonies in this Hemisphere from the period of the Peac of 1782 till the Mission of Mr. Gallatin to Great Britain was necessary for the right Understanding of thier present State; which will form the subject of another paper." This autograph manuscript leaf, written in the hand of John Quincy Adams, appears to have been written to explain a separate document or treatise (no longer present). The leaf refers to trade relations between the United States and the remaining Western British Colonies from 1782 to Gallatin's appointment as minister to Great Britain (1826-1827). The handwriting on this leaf suggests it was from late in Adams' life. "Adams, who recognized himself as a 'man of reserved, cold, austere, and forbidding manners,' had found great satisfaction in a congressional career that brought him plaudits among slavery opponents as a popular hero, 'Old Man Eloquent,' 'Defender of the Rights of Man.' Historically, however, his reputation rests most firmly on the policies he pursued as diplomat and president. Aptly characterized by one biographer as 'an Independent Man,' Adams was a poor politician, unwilling to cater to popular interests and reluctant even to compromise. But sound judgment and a strong commitment to public service led him to formulate and stubbornly adhere to views of public policy that over the years have won strong approval" (ANB).

Book of Mormon: An account written by the hand of Mormon, upon Plates taken from the Plates of Nephi

Palmyra, NY: E.B. Grandin, 1830. First Edition. 588pp. Octavo [19 cm] Original plain brown calf boards with seven gilt stamped double bands on the backstrip. Black leather label on the backstrip with 'Book of Mormon' gilt stamped on it. The light blue robin egg speckling to the fore edge is faint but visible. The front hinge is starting at the foot, and the text block shows sporadic foxing. Two endsheets are present at the front and rear of this book. This is an unsophisticated copy that has had no work. A nice copy of this important work. Printed in an edition of five thousand copies by Egbert B. Grandin in upstate New York. Printing took place between August 1829 and March 1830, in the Grandin building that Egbert rented from his brother, Philip. Before the 1830 edition of the Book of Mormon was officially published, sections were being printed in a local Palmyra newspaper called The Reflector. The newspaper was run by Abner Cole who used the pseudonym "Obediah Dogberry." After some discussion, Joseph Smith finally convinced Cole to stop his piracy of the book. This "preprinting" of excerpts from the book caused non-Mormons some concern about the doctrines of the Mormon church, and thus, began the initial persecution of the Mormons themselves. The 1830 first edition book of Mormon includes many variant copies with printing errors in pagination and spelling. Part of the reason for these variants may be explained by the fact that Joseph Smith used several scribes when writing the book. The scribes included: his wife, Emma Hale Smith, his brother-in-law, Reuben Hale, Martin Harris and Oliver Cowdery. According to Peter Crawley "…it is possible that very few copies of the book exist which are entirely identical." A highly sought after book by historical, religious and Mormon book collectors alike.         Broadside on cloth: Mary's Lamb in Sunday Lessons, No. 1

Boston: Boston Chemical Printing Company. [circa1830-32]. First. First edition. Printed on cotton cloth hemmed on four sides. Approximately 12" x 11.5". Several modest and scattered rust stains, but no fraying or other wear, a very good or better example. Printed in three columns divided by lines of type ornaments within an overall border of type ornaments. Cuts at head of each column are of boys in Sunday School; a boy playing with a lamb; and a woman reading to young girls. Five other hymns or prayers surrounding the central poem: Mary's Lamb by Mrs. Hale. Better known now by the first line, "Mary Had a Little Lamb," Hale's poem was first published in the magazine The Juvenile Miscellany. (Boston: Putnam and Hunt, September, 1830) and in book form in Poems for Our Children, also in 1830. A revised version was published by Hale in The School Song Book. (Boston: Allen & Ticknor, 1834). Our version seems to be identical in text to the original version, so our presumption is that this precedes the 1834 The School Song Book. According to OCLC six examples (of four separate titles, not including this one) of broadsides on cloth by this publisher/manufacturer exist in American libraries, one apparently dated 1830, the others attributed to that decade. Thomas Edison made this poem the first words ever recorded when he spoke them into his new invention, the phonograph, in 1877. Rare. .

"A description and use of the globes; to which is prefixed, a copious alphabetical explanation of terms, and an introduction to astronomy"

"printed for the author, and sold by Messrs. Simpkin and Marshall [and] Messrs. Newton and Berry, globemakers, n.d." London: "printed for the author, and sold by Messrs. Simpkin and Marshall [and] Messrs. Newton and Berry, globemakers, n.d.". [ca. 1830]. "First and likely only edition, 12mo, pp. [4], 335, [1]; 3 engraved folding plates; tables and diagrams in the text; contemporary full polished tan calf, gilt border on covers, black morocco label on gilt- decorated spine; extremities rubbed, joints starting but the binding remains sound; a good copy or better.& & The Preface is dated ""Kensington, June 1, 1830"". The lexicon of terms occupies better than half the book.& & Thomas Whiting was the Master of Keppel House Academy -- or Keppel House Seminary -- which was near Brompton, London. He was also a writer of several popular astronomical and mathematical works, notably The London gentleman's and schoolmaster's assistant (1787); Mathematical, Geometrical, and Philosophical Delights (1798), and A Comprehensive System of Astronomy, both Theoretic and Practical, etc. (1828).& & Interestingly, Whiting wrote his book such as to be useable in conjunction with globes made by the firm Newton and Berry. In his preface Whiting says the ""most modern"" globes are those of Newton and Berry, and the firm appears even in the imprint on the title page as one of the sellers of Whiting's book. Dahl and Gauvin's book Sphaerae Mundi: Early Globes at the Stewart Museum (2000) states the Newton family, ""along with the Cary family, were the most important globe makers in the England in the nineteenth century"" (p. 100).& & But what's this? This book appears to be totally unrecorded. Not found in ESTC, COPAK, OCLC, NUC, or KVK. "

London: C.J.G. & F. Rivington, 1830. 2 volumes. Revised edition. Engraved frontispiece to Vol. I and with eleven very fine large multi-folding engraved maps. 8vo, handsomely bound in antique three-quarter polished calf over marbled boards, contrasting red and black morocco lettering labels gilt, gilt tooled compartments with elaborately tooled panel designs between gilt stopped raised bands. xxiv, 535 pp; vi 472 pp. A very fine and handsome set. Exceptionally clean and in excellent state throughout. Some typical offsetting to the frontispiece of Volume I. VERY SCARCE IN FINE CONDITION AND AN IMPORTANT WORK. James Rennell started his career in geography as a midshipman in the navy. After advancing as far as he could he went to work for the East India Company as Surveyor-General of Bengal. Rennell is most noted for his Atlas of Bengal and most especially for creating the first correct map of India. An injury forced his retirement from Bengal service and he decided to turn his attention to comparative geography, reconciling ancient descriptions with modern maps. He continued to write, create maps and win awards throughout his life. Rennell would become a kind of elder statesman of the British geographic world, throughout his life he would be consulted by geographers seeking his opinions and approval for new projects. This work is a comprehensive historical and geographic survey of the ancient worlds of Africa and Asia. Using the descriptions of Herodotus and other ancient authors Rennell puts them all into a modern context. Each section is accompanied by a map showing and placing ancient sites into their modern positions.

        1. Nave pel trasporto de' Deportati

Italy,: n.d., circa, 1830.. Two lithographic plates, 105 x 130 mm. each, on a single sheet; disbound, but very good. A rare and unusual piece of transportation history, showing a delightful and rather fanciful depiction of two scenes from the voyages to Sydney. In both scenes there is a distinct sense of classical genre painting, and in both the vessels depicted look closer to Mediterranean brigantines than true convict ships. The first image shows the embarking of the convicts, presumably in England - although one could easily be confused by their casual Mediterranean attire. The second shows the arrival and disembarking of the transport, with the convicts still looking improbably comfortable. It is particularly intriguing that of the six people gathered at the foot of the gangplank, two appear to be naked Aborigines. As with the copy in the National Library of Australia, this print has been disbound.

Philadelphia: A. Finley, [ca. 1830]. Folding pocket map engraved by Young & Delleker, full contemporary hand-colouring. Folds into publisher's roan covers, covers bordered in blind, upper cover titled in gilt, publisher's ad on the inside front pastedown. (Minor separations at intersecting folds as usual). 8 3/4 x 11 3/8 inches. Rare separately-issued Finley pocket map of Tennessee. Following the initial publications of both his New General Atlas and New American Atlas, Finley issued pocket map versions of many of his maps from those important early American atlases. This map of Tennessee appears to be printed from the same plate as his map of Tennessee which appeared in Finley's New General Atlas of 1831, with the addition of rivers and place names to the neighboring states not found in early editions of the New General Atlas, The map was certainly issued before 1835, as neither Benton nor Lauderdale counties appear on the map. Although diminutive in size, the map still shows good detail, including principal towns, roads, and rivers, and with each county identified. In the southeast corner of the state, a large area of Cherokee lands is depicted. Little is known of Anthony Finley, other than his published work 'but he was probably born around 1790. Judging from contributors to his atlases, he apparently moved in the same Philadelphia circles of engravers and compilers as other contemporary publishers' (Ristow, p.268). Not in Phillips, A List of Maps of America or Rumsey.

The Ford?s Theater Owner Discusses The Entertainment Business: ?I Will Certainly Press Her Engagement With Great Vigor And Endeavor Successfully To Make Her A Permanent Star Favorite In The Two Cities?

ALS. 2pg. 5 ¼? x 8?. Sunday. No Place. A rare autograph letter signed ?J.T. Ford? to Mr. Wright, discussing theater business: ?Your anticipated and promised letter did not arrive. Respecting Mrs. Bowers? engagement, I will give her the terms for time in January and Feb. which will be in the least profitable part of the Season. I will certainly press her engagement with great vigor and endeavor successfully to make her a permanent Star favorite in the two cities. With this much understood leave from her if she accepts my offer I will locate the precise day of the commencement in reply after I hear positively from her. Mr. Tayleune has written a most admirable new version of East Lyme and is now engaged on some other dramatizations which I think will be very popular. Mrs. B. have them to read at an early period. Write me immediately.? It is likely this was written to John B. Wright, the stage manager at the Ford Theater when Lincoln was shot. Ford was discussing an appearance by Elizabeth Crocker Bowers (1830-1895), a popular American actress in the mid-Nineteenth Century. Other than a paper clip impression on the top margin, the letter is in fine condition and has a bold signature in black ink.
