Autograph manuscript leaf written entirely in John Quincy Adams' hand concerning trade between the US and Western British colonies from 1782-1826

Autograph manuscript leaf in the hand of John Quincy Adams, no place, circa 1830, 1 pp, 8" x 5". The manuscript leaf is presumably intended to accompany a longer document and referencing trade between the United States and its neighboring British colonies, reading: "This review of the commerical Relations between the United States of American and the British Colonies in this Hemisphere from the period of the Peac of 1782 till the Mission of Mr. Gallatin to Great Britain was necessary for the right Understanding of thier present State; which will form the subject of another paper."This autograph manuscript leaf, written in the hand of John Quincy Adams, appears to have been written to explain a separate document or treatise (no longer present). The leaf refers to trade relations between the United States and the remaining Western British Colonies from 1782 to Gallatin's appointment as minister to Great Britain (1826-1827). The handwriting on this leaf suggests it was from late in Adams' life.

Jan Evangelista Purkinje was born in Libochovice, Bohemia (Czech Republic) on December 17, 1787. He graduated from the University of Prague in 1819 with a degree in medicine. After publishing his doctoral dissertation on vision, he was appointed as Professor of Physiology at the University of Prague, where he discovered the phenomenon known as the Pukinje effect (as light intensity decreases, red objects are perceived to fade faster than blue objects of the same brightness). Purkinje created the world's first department of physiology at the University of Breslau, Prussia in 1839 and the first official physiological laboratory, known as the Physiological Institute, in 1842. Purkinje was a pioneer to experimental physiology whose investigations in the fields of histology, embryology and pharmacology helped to create a modern understanding of the eye and vision, brain and heart function, mammalian reproduction and the composition of cells.//A beautifully bound copy with the name of Dr. Jan Mitvalsky on free endpaper, and 2 other names on title.

Oeuv. 74 - Propriété des Editeurs - Pr. 1 Thlr.8Gr. ("Harp-Quartet")

Leipsic, Chez Breitkopf & Härtel (c. 1830?). Set of parts. - Folio. Title, (1) p. (blank), pp. 3-11, (1) p. (blank); 7 pp. (1) p. (blank); 7 pp. (1) p. (blank); 7 pp. (1) p. (blank). Engraved title and music (pl.-no. 1609). Kinsi/Halm record only 1 title too. Sewn, no binding; in modern cassette. Later issue of the first German edition (new price, corrections on the plates); the first edition of the full score appeared in 1833. The "Harp Quartet" – this term was not derived by any composer and refers to the Pizzicati in the initial phase -, was written in 1809 and is often seen as the, result of Beethoven's intensive preoccupation with Albrechtsberger's theory on counter point. His former teacher had died in 1809, as had Haydn, and now Beethoven remained as the most important representative of the German-Austrian music tradition. Subsequently he devoted his time intensively with the works of his predecessors, and the "heroic" gestures were replaced by a more tranquil-lyrical tenor. This phase in Beethoven's work begins with op. 74. "The string quartet in Es-Dur op. 74 is seen as a simple and conservative piece of music. However, it does mark a turning point in Beethoven's work and carries the seeds of something new within. Therefore, one could also go so far as to call it prophetic" (Caeyers p. 445). Parts for viola and violoncello with slim margins. Publisher's stamp on title. Green fore-edges. Slightly browned throughout and in places finger-stained. Old handwritten pagination relating to an old "sammelband". BHB C 240/11,4; cf. Kinsky/Halm p. 198.

- *A pioneer of orthopedic surgery in France. He had the misfortune to be shot and killed by a vindictive patient, who thought that an operation for variocele had rendered him unfit for marriage. - cf. Valentin, Gesch. d. Later half green cloth, marbled sides. First and only edition. "Germain Felix Meijlan (1785-1831) entered the Dutch East India Company in 1806. From 1827 to 1830 he was the head of the company's factory in Nagasaki. It was during his period of office on Dejima that there occurred the notorious 'Siebold affair,' which called for the utmost discretion on his part in order to affect an amicable solution. Meanwhile he had begun to devote himself to a survey of Japanese foreign trade, the results of this study appearing posthumously in his 'Geschiedkundig oversigt van den handel der Europezen op Japan' (1833). It appears that he was contemplating a sequel to the present volume, this to center around impressions gained during his visit to Edo in 1830, but his untimely death thwarted any such plans./The present work was completed in the spring of 1829 and is concerned chiefly with the author's observations of life and conditions in Nagasaki. It is divided into fifteen chapters treating of such diverse topics as the government of the town of Nagasaki and that of Japan as a whole, the island of Dejima, Japanese religion and festivals and including a short sketch of the Japanese language" (Nipponalia, XVI).//Alt-Japan-Kat. 1001; Cordier 486; Tiele, 754.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Berlin, 21. November 1830.. 1 S. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo.

1830. Radierung, 1830, auf Kupferdruckpapier. 20:26,1 cm. Literatur: Andresen/Heller 5; Boetticher I, 2, S. 812, 34.

Paris: Levavasseur, 1830. FIRST EDITION n. Hardcover. Attractively Bound Marital Advice, Including the Use of Leeches to Infuse the Wife with Languor. 197 x 127 mm (7 3/4 x 5"). Two volumes. FIRST EDITION. Appealing rose-colored morocco by Fletcher Battershall (stamp-signed on front turn-in with his distinctive bat device), covers with mitered frame of double gilt rules, topiary cornerpieces, raised bands, spine compartments framed in gilt with leaf cornerpieces, gilt titling, turn-ins with gilt rules and leaves at corners, top edges gilt. Front pastedowns with large wood-engraved bookplate of the binder. Vicaire I, 181. A dozen leaves spotted (four of these noticeably so), scarcely perceptible uniform fading to spines, but IN FINE CONDITION, the text otherwise clean, bright, and fresh, and the bindings with lustrous leather, glittering gilt, and virtually no wear. This is a pleasing copy of an early work in Balzac's celebrated multi-volume "Comédie Humaine," offered here in excellent amateur bindings by scholar, collector, connoisseur, and binder Fletcher W. Battershall. A lawyer by trade, Battershall (1866-1929) was the author of "Book-Binding for Bibliophiles" (1905) and several articles on bookbinding. He was perhaps a pupil of Louis Kinder, head binder at the Roycroft Shop, as Kinder dedicated his own book, "Formulas for Bookbinders," to Battershall in admiration of the latter's "love for and unceasing labors in the study of artistic bookbinding." Generally considered to be the father of social realism, Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850) was one of Europe's greatest novelists. His "Comédie Humaine" was a collection of interlinked narratives depicting French society from 1815-48 (encompassing the Restoration and the July Monarchy), the collection embracing 95 finished and 48 unfinished works. "New World Encyclopedia" tells us that "even in its unfinished state, it represents an immense literary endeavor, larger in scope and length than possibly any other literary work undertaken in recent history, and comparable perhaps only to" William Faulkner's series of novels and stories set in the American South. The present Balzac work was part of what is called the "physiologie genre," a group of books produced in Paris in the 1820s, 1830s, and early 1840s. According to "Oxford Companion to French Literature," these works comprised "a precious source for the study of the society, politics, and culture of this period," with "the most notable [of these] being Brillat-Savarin's 'Physiologie du Goût' (1826) and Balzac's 'Physiologie du Mariage' (1830). . . . Underlying all the Physiologies was the sense that modern city life had become both infinitely interesting and mysterious, as well as decidedly ridiculous and bathetic." Balzac was no expert on marriage, and his self-help advice here seems to us somewhere beyond unsound. Husbands are advised to keep their wives weak and submissive by discouraging sunshine and physical exercise in favor of lounging and frequent baths. Should the wife continue in ruddy good health, leeches might be employed to reduce her to the desired languorous state. Despite the dubious applicability of its text to modern life, the book is nevertheless sought after, whether attractively bound or not.

Essay on the Hieroglyphic System of M. Champollion, Jun. And on the Advantages which it offers to Sacred Criticism.

Perkins & Marvin, Boston 1830 - Boston: Perkins & Marvin, 1830. First Edition. 7.5" x 4.75", 276 pp. including appendices, plus two plates. Floral patterned brown cloth, printed paper spine label. Two older shelf labels on spine, signs of professional hinge/joint restoration, cloth with soiling, stains, some fading; crayon note on front pastedown. dampstain on endpapers, light foxing mainly at endpapers. Firmly bound, about very good. Rare translation of M. J.G.H. Greppo's essay on Egyptian hieroglyphics, which was based on the work of Jean-Francois Champollion. Champollion, who is generally considered the founder of scientific egyptology and who was the first to have substantial success (following some success of English physicist Thomas Young) in deciphering the Rosetta Stone, began publishing his findings in the early 1820's and, despite some opposition, had set the standard for future studies of Egypt by the time Greppo's piece was published. Greppo himself was the Vicar-General of Belley, France. He published a number of pieces based on his central interest, ancient religious writings, which he considered hieroglyphics to primarily be. More than 1/3 of this piece is comprised by voluminous and informative appendices; there are also two small plates at the end. L10 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
