THREE LECTURES On the Transmission of the Precious Metals from Country to Country, and the Mercantile Theory of Wealth

John Murray, London, 1830, Hardcover, Second EditionSenior was educated at Eton and Magdalen College, Oxford; at the university he was a private pupil of Richard Whately, afterwards archbishop of Dublin, with whom he remained connected by ties of lifelong friendship. He took the degree of B. A. In 1811, was called to the bar in 1819, and in 1836, during the chancellorship of Lord Cottenham, was appointed a master in chancery. On the foundation of the professorship of political economy at Oxford in 1825 Senior was elected to fill the chair, which he occupied till 1830, and again from 1847 to 1852. In 1830 he was requested by Lord Melbourne to inquire into the state of combinations and strikes, to report on the state of the law and to suggest improvements in it. Senior was a member of the Poor Law Inquiry Commission of 1832, and of the handloom weavers Commission of 1837. The report of the latter, published in 1841, was drawn up by him, and he embodied in it the substance of the report he had prepared some years before on combinations and strikes. He became a good friend of Alexis de Tocqueville (1805?1859) , whom he met in 1833 for the first time before the publishing of Democracy in America. Senior was in the spring of 1849 legal advisor and marriage counsellor to Jenny Lind (1820?1887) , the Swedish Nightingale, who then performed in London. He accompanied her and Mrs George Grote to Paris (amid civil strife and a cholera epidemic) , where the marriage failed to take place. Senior was "indirectly responsible for the contract which Jenny Lind condescended to sign in 1850 with the American promoter P. T. Barnum". Senior was one of the commissioners appointed in 1864 to inquire into popular education in England. In the later years of his life, during his visits to foreign countries, he studied with much care the political and social phenomena they exhibited. Several volumes of his journals have been published, which contain much interesting matter on these topics, though the author probably rated too highly the value of this sort of social study. Senior was for many years a frequent contributor to the Edinburgh Quarterly, London and North British Reviews, dealing in their pages with literary as well as with economic and political subjects. He died at Kensington on 4 June 1864. Good in boards. Scarce.

Rare - First Edition! - Karl Heinrich Baumgärtner's (1798-1886) "Bildungskugeltheorie" was a precursor of the cell theory of Theodor Schwann. - - "But the observations and writings of Milne Edwards may be looked upon as having given, more than those of any other author, position and popularity to the " globular theory." He examined all the principal tissues, and announced that the fibres of the then so-called cellular (fibrous) tissues, membranes composed of these fibres, muscle and nerve, were composed of globules of about the same size, from 1/8000 to 1/7500 inch, in diameter; whence he concluded that these spherical corpuscles, by their aggregation, constituted all organic textures, vegetable or animal, and whatsoever their properties or functions. There is little doubt but that many of these so-called globules described by Edwards were' really cells, seen with indifferent instruments, and further distorted by the glare of direct sunlight. - - Similar, as regards the element of organization, were the views of Baumgartner and Arnold, who were joint observers. They considered the fundamental elements of organization to be the formative globule (Bildungskugel), and the molecular granule (Molecularkügelchen). The first is primarily formed by a simple aggregation of smaller granules first represented by the granules of the yolk united by a formless material. The " molecular granule " arises from a breaking up of the " formative globule." A modification of the " formative globule " out of an aggregation of which" the entire embryo is first formed, is the haematoid body (Hämatoidkörper). This is a nucleated discoid body with a distinct ring-like border (geringter Körperkern mit einem Ringe). - - Further, " Out of these two kinds of globules and out of formless material," says Baumgärtner, " all tissues are formed, namely, the tissue-fibres (threads) out of the molecular granules, and the haematoid bodies out of the formative globules and newlyformed tissue-fibres. The molecular form is not everywhere equally expressed, which is owing in the first place to the fact that often the molecular granules more or less fuse together, and second, that formless material surrounds the molecular granules and makes their ontline indistinct. The theory here brought forward of the fundamental form of organization in animals may well he called the globular theory." - - It is evident that the " formative globule," or at least the modification of it called the Haematoidkörper, is nothing more nor less than the nucleated cell, which, however, Baumgärtner did not admit, contending as late as 1842 against the cell doctrine ; asserting also that in the development of tissues the formative globule never divides to form two, in other words, that there is no such thing as cell division.* - - Arnold also says that all fluid and solid parts of the human body are resolvable first into a fluid or half fluid material of no determinate form, and second, into granules which are more or less completely spherical-, and in all solid structures appear for the most part as minute globules. The granules, which are the second more important element, occur not only in all fluids and solid parts of the completely formed human organism, but they are also the original and essential constituents of the human embryo. Out of these by their aggregation are formed the most complex tissues of the organism." James Tyson: The Cell Doctrine: Its History and present., 2nd. Ed. (1878), pp.25-27 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

London: W. Kidd. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Slader, S. and others, from the designs of Cruikshank, Seymour and Bonner. Book. 16mo - over 5? - 6?" tall. Undated, circa 1830. Xrare, with only two copies turning up on OCLC Worldcat. With frontis plate and woodcut illustrations, two per section (with title and as tail piece at end). 36, 47, 36, 49, 32, 54 pp. In essence, six smaller books or pamphlets bound together, although it appears that these may have been originally issued as a single volume. Actual authorship of each installment is not given, but pseudonymous authors are One of "The Exclusives", A Member of "The Beef-Steak Club", A Lover of Nature, One of the Cognescenti, Amator, and Amicus Juventutis, respectively, with two of the sections, such as the first, Book of Fashion, supposedly "A Digest of the Axioms of the Celebrated Joseph Brummell, Esq." As the titles suggest, this is a mostly tongue-in-cheek etiquette primer as well as a wry send-up of the manners, mores and customs of fashionable society in Regency England. Tight, with some minor wear to red morocco. Interior clean. An attractive copy of a very scarce work.

Le Kaire. Vue Intérieure de la Maison d'Osmàn Bey

Paris 1830 - Copper engraving, with later professional hand-colouring. Very good condition apart from a few mild surface abrasions in the top margin and lower left corner of the plate mark, a 1/2" tear in the right margin, and some very minor foxing in the margins. A fine plate from 'Description de l'Egypte', the seminal publication by the French government detailing the results of the Napoleon's pioneering military and scientific expedition to Egypt (1798-1801) and the first comprehensive illustrated description of ancient and modern Egypt. In 1798, Napoleon embarked on his legendary expedition to Egypt with the ambition of wresting control of the region from the Turkish Empire and 'opening' the enigmatic kingdom to the West. Conquering Egypt, the geographical centerpoint in the axis of trade between Europe, India and the East, was an integral part of Bonaparte's strategic plan for global domination. Among the numerous civilians accompanying him, were the 'savants', leading French scholars, artists, scientists, engineers and technicians, whom he commissioned to compile a thorough survey of every aspect of Egypt that could later be used in planning the country's future shape. The survey was divided into various sections detailing the antiquities, modern architecture, natural history and topography of Egypt and coordinated by the 'l'Institut de l'Egypte' with a view to publication. Following the defeat of the French army, the 'savants' returned to France where a committee was established to edit and supervise the work's production. Begun under Napoleon in 1809, 'Description de l'Egypte' was finally completed in 1830. Although not a military success, the expedition and the resultant 'Description', were a scientific and cultural triumph considered by many to be the "Birth of Egyptology". Prior to Napoleon's invasion, access to and knowledge of Egypt, its culture and antiquities, were limited to the objects brought to Europe by the Romans and nineteenth-century merchants. The exquisite plates from this voluminous and invaluable work provided the first true glimpse into a once mysterious land and indelibly influenced how the west perceived Egypt. This particular plate is from the volume entitled 'Etat Moderne', which detailed important examples of Egyptian architecture constructed after the seventh-century Arab invasion.

PAIR OF NEAPOLITAN GOUACHES: Vedute di Pozzuoli and Grotta del Cane

Naples 1830 - Gouache on paper: "Vedute di Pozzuoli" signed l. l. "Camillo de Vito pinx"; "Grotta del Cane" signed l.r. "Chas. Glass Naples." These two Neapolitan School gouache paintings from the first half of the 19th century exemplify the happy vibrancy of this school of painting, in which the rich, warm Italian skies play a major role, along with lush vegetation and blue seas. In the View of Pozzuoli, de Vito displays in the foreground a shepherd with a long staff speaking to a woman and daughter, all are dressed in native costume. Down the cove, the town of Pozzuoli sits serenely beneath the late afternoon sun. In "Grotta del Cane", also near Naples, a story is told. A man is walking away from the cave with an unconscious dog. This is because the Grotta del Cane (Cave of Dogs) is noted for an odd phenomenon. Being a volcanic region, the cave in question has an excess of carbon dioxide, which, being heavier than oxygen, sinks downward. Humans are not affected, but dogs are, Apparently, the dog revived when brought back into a normal atmosphere. The story of the dog is incidental to the colorful landscape with the Bay in the background and the soft blue sky and pink clouds above the odd granite hill the grotto occupies.         The Siege of La Rochelle or Misfortune and Conscience. In two volumes. Vol. I [-II].

      S. Low 1830 - 2 vols. in 1, a little spotting and marginal damp-staining, first leaf of 2nd vol. creased and the opening with a light stain (apparently from a bookmark), pp. [iv], [i], [v-] viii, 172; 204, 8vo, recased in the original green linen backed boards, spine faded, edges rubbed, later printed paper label on spine, good The translator begins her preface (which is on an inserted leaf): ‘The constant kindness with which for the last thirty years my works have been regarded by the public, and especially the favourable reception which it has deigned to give to this production of my pen, might have authorised me in not making in not making any alteration in this edition’, and goes on to outline the changes. However we have not been able to locate any earlier edition. Nor have we been able to ascertain much about ‘Miss Webb’ (as she appears on the title-page). That she was connected with Oxford or Oxfordshire is obvious from the dedication to the county’s MP, and the preponderance of Oxfordshire addresses for the subscribers. Otherwise we have drawn a blank. BL and Bodleian only in COPAC and WorldCat.
