Napoleon Bonaparte, als Kaiser Napoleon I., frz. Napoleon Bonaparte bzw. Napoleon Ier, Napoleone Buonaparte (Ajaccio auf Korsika 15. 08. 1769 - 05. 05. 1821 Longwood House auf St. Helena, Südatlantik). Kaiser von Frankreich. Franz. General und Staatsmann. Kniestück sehend im Krönungsornat von Frankreich, "Napoleon",.

. Stahlstich v. Schuler & Metzeroth n. Gerard b. (Inst. - Nagler No.1.

Rare - First Edition! - Karl Heinrich Baumgärtner's (1798-1886) "Bildungskugeltheorie" was a precursor of the cell theory of Theodor Schwann. - - "But the observations and writings of Milne Edwards may be looked upon as having given, more than those of any other author, position and popularity to the " globular theory." He examined all the principal tissues, and announced that the fibres of the then so-called cellular (fibrous) tissues, membranes composed of these fibres, muscle and nerve, were composed of globules of about the same size, from 1/8000 to 1/7500 inch, in diameter; whence he concluded that these spherical corpuscles, by their aggregation, constituted all organic textures, vegetable or animal, and whatsoever their properties or functions. There is little doubt but that many of these so-called globules described by Edwards were' really cells, seen with indifferent instruments, and further distorted by the glare of direct sunlight. - - Similar, as regards the element of organization, were the views of Baumgartner and Arnold, who were joint observers. They considered the fundamental elements of organization to be the formative globule (Bildungskugel), and the molecular granule (Molecularkügelchen). The first is primarily formed by a simple aggregation of smaller granules first represented by the granules of the yolk united by a formless material. The " molecular granule " arises from a breaking up of the " formative globule." A modification of the " formative globule " out of an aggregation of which" the entire embryo is first formed, is the haematoid body (Hämatoidkörper). This is a nucleated discoid body with a distinct ring-like border (geringter Körperkern mit einem Ringe). - - Further, " Out of these two kinds of globules and out of formless material," says Baumgärtner, " all tissues are formed, namely, the tissue-fibres (threads) out of the molecular granules, and the haematoid bodies out of the formative globules and newlyformed tissue-fibres. The molecular form is not everywhere equally expressed, which is owing in the first place to the fact that often the molecular granules more or less fuse together, and second, that formless material surrounds the molecular granules and makes their ontline indistinct. The theory here brought forward of the fundamental form of organization in animals may well he called the globular theory." - - It is evident that the " formative globule," or at least the modification of it called the Haematoidkörper, is nothing more nor less than the nucleated cell, which, however, Baumgärtner did not admit, contending as late as 1842 against the cell doctrine ; asserting also that in the development of tissues the formative globule never divides to form two, in other words, that there is no such thing as cell division.* - - Arnold also says that all fluid and solid parts of the human body are resolvable first into a fluid or half fluid material of no determinate form, and second, into granules which are more or less completely spherical-, and in all solid structures appear for the most part as minute globules. The granules, which are the second more important element, occur not only in all fluids and solid parts of the completely formed human organism, but they are also the original and essential constituents of the human embryo. Out of these by their aggregation are formed the most complex tissues of the organism." James Tyson: The Cell Doctrine: Its History and present..., 2nd. Ed. (1878), pp.25-27

Autograph manuscript leaf written entirely in John Quincy Adams' hand concerning trade between the US and Western British colonies from 1782-1826

Autograph manuscript leaf in the hand of John Quincy Adams, no place, circa 1830, 1 pp, 8" x 5". The manuscript leaf is presumably intended to accompany a longer document and referencing trade between the United States and its neighboring British colonies, reading: "This review of the commerical Relations between the United States of American and the British Colonies in this Hemisphere from the period of the Peac of 1782 till the Mission of Mr. Gallatin to Great Britain was necessary for the right Understanding of thier present State; which will form the subject of another paper."This autograph manuscript leaf, written in the hand of John Quincy Adams, appears to have been written to explain a separate document or treatise (no longer present). The leaf refers to trade relations between the United States and the remaining Western British Colonies from 1782 to Gallatin's appointment as minister to Great Britain (1826-1827). The handwriting on this leaf suggests it was from late in Adams' life.

Oeuv. 74 - Propriété des Editeurs - Pr. 1 Thlr.8Gr. ("Harp-Quartet")

Leipsic, Chez Breitkopf & Härtel (c. 1830?). Set of parts. - Folio. Title, (1) p. (blank), pp. 3-11, (1) p. (blank); 7 pp. (1) p. (blank); 7 pp. (1) p. (blank); 7 pp. (1) p. (blank). Engraved title and music (pl.-no. 1609). Kinsi/Halm record only 1 title too. Sewn, no binding; in modern cassette. Later issue of the first German edition (new price, corrections on the plates); the first edition of the full score appeared in 1833. The "Harp Quartet" – this term was not derived by any composer and refers to the Pizzicati in the initial phase -, was written in 1809 and is often seen as the, result of Beethoven's intensive preoccupation with Albrechtsberger's theory on counter point. His former teacher had died in 1809, as had Haydn, and now Beethoven remained as the most important representative of the German-Austrian music tradition. Subsequently he devoted his time intensively with the works of his predecessors, and the "heroic" gestures were replaced by a more tranquil-lyrical tenor. This phase in Beethoven's work begins with op. 74. "The string quartet in Es-Dur op. 74 is seen as a simple and conservative piece of music. However, it does mark a turning point in Beethoven's work and carries the seeds of something new within. Therefore, one could also go so far as to call it prophetic" (Caeyers p. 445). Parts for viola and violoncello with slim margins. Publisher's stamp on title. Green fore-edges. Slightly browned throughout and in places finger-stained. Old handwritten pagination relating to an old "sammelband". BHB C 240/11,4; cf. Kinsky/Halm p. 198.

- *A pioneer of orthopedic surgery in France. He had the misfortune to be shot and killed by a vindictive patient, who thought that an operation for variocele had rendered him unfit for marriage. - cf. Valentin, Gesch. d. Orthopädie, 31ff; Waller 2348; Josephin. Bibliothek (Wien) (nur 27 Taflel); Garrison, Hist. of. Med., pp.490-491; Lesky, p.163; Hoff/Blencke 3; Garrison & Morton No. 4315 (französ.       Amsterdam, M. Westerman & Zoon, 1830. 8vo (210 x 125mm). pp. (14), 190, with charming handcoloured title-vignette heightened with gold and 2 folded aquatint plates. Later half green cloth, marbled sides. First and only edition. "Germain Felix Meijlan (1785-1831) entered the Dutch East India Company in 1806. From 1827 to 1830 he was the head of the company's factory in Nagasaki. It was during his period of office on Dejima that there occurred the notorious 'Siebold affair,' which called for the utmost discretion on his part in order to affect an amicable solution. Meanwhile he had begun to devote himself to a survey of Japanese foreign trade, the results of this study appearing posthumously in his 'Geschiedkundig oversigt van den handel der Europezen op Japan' (1833). It appears that he was contemplating a sequel to the present volume, this to center around impressions gained during his visit to Edo in 1830, but his untimely death thwarted any such plans./The present work was completed in the spring of 1829 and is concerned chiefly with the author's observations of life and conditions in Nagasaki. It is divided into fifteen chapters treating of such diverse topics as the government of the town of Nagasaki and that of Japan as a whole, the island of Dejima, Japanese religion and festivals and including a short sketch of the Japanese language" (Nipponalia, XVI).//Alt-Japan-Kat. 1001; Cordier 486; Tiele, 754.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Berlin, 21. November 1830.. 1 S. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo.
