        Reise durch Italien.

      Jenisch und Stage, Augsburg/Leipzig 1830 - 8vo. (ca. 20,5 x 12 cm). Halbleder der Zeit mit Buntpapierbezug und handgeschr. Rückenschild, 254 S. ADB X, 416 ff. NDB 7, 538 f. (NDB). - Einband etwas berieben/beschabt, Rücken leicht rissig. Vorsätze fleckig bzw. etwas leimschattig, mit kleinen Resten/Abklatsch von früher eingeklebten Drucksachen, Siegeln o. ä. Auf dem fl. Vorsatzblatt ein privater Stempel mit Monogramm WK. Im Rückdeckel Bleistift-Notizen mit Seitenzahlen. Innen leicht gebräunt, stellenweise etwas fleckig, einzelne Bleistift-Striche am Seitenrand. 420 Gramm. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        On the phenomena and laws of elliptic polarization, as exhibited in the action of metals upon light.

      In: The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society ... London:: Printed by Richard Taylor, 1830., 1830. 279 x 225 mm. 4to. Vol. 120. Part two: vi, (223)-434, [8], 14 pp. (Brewster's article appears on pages 287-326). Numerous tables, 3 figs.; some offsetting associated with plates at the rear of the volume, some track-marks on series title. Original blue wrapper, untrimmed, blue kozo spine; top cover chipped. Very good. FIRST EDITION. This paper contains Brewster's second major contribution: the laws of metallic reflection. "The most striking properties of metals are the power of brilliantly reflecting light at all angles of incidence, which is so well shown by the mirrors of reflecting telescopes, and the opacity, which causes a train of waves to be extinguished before it has proceeded many wave-lengths into a metallic medium. That these two attributes are connected appears probable from the fact that certain non-metallic bodies - e.g. aniline dyes - which strongly absorb the rays in certain parts of the spectrum, reflect those rays with almost metallic brilliance. A third quality in which metals differ from transparent bodies, and which, as we shall see, is again closely related to the other two, is in regard to the polarisation of the light reflected from them. This was first noticed by Malus; and in 1830 Sir David Brewster showed that plane-polarised light incident on a metallic surface remains polarised in the same plane after reflection if its polarisation is either parallel or perpendicular to the plane of reflection, but that in other cases the reflected light is polarised elliptically. It was this discovery of Brewster's which suggested to the mathematicians a theory of metallic reflection." Whittaker. DNB, II, pp. 1207-1211; DSB, II, pp. 451-454; Encyclopædia Britannica, 11th ed., IV, pp. 513-514; Morrison-Low, "Published writings of Sir David Brewster: a bibliography," in: Morrison-Low and Christie, 'Martyr of science', No. 477; Whittaker, A history of the theories of aether & electricity, I, p. 161.

        Presentation copy to Sir James Paget, inscribed by the author: Reflections on the Decline of Science in England.

      Printed for B. Fellowes and J. Booth, London 1830 - 8vo (215 x 135 mm). 228, [4] pp. including half-title and 4pp. publisher's list of works at end. Contemporary russia, gilt-decorated boards, spine rebacked (some wear to extremities), all edges gilt. Light soiling to title, but generally quite clean and fresh. Provenance: presentation copy from the author to James Paget* inscribed on front free endpaper. ---- Norman 90; Honeyman 169. FIRST EDITION of Babbage's polemic on the state of science in England, aimed mainly at the Royal Society. He also criticised the government in its lack of support in developing science and proposed reforms for scientific education. The decline of English science in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries had long been a byword among the country's more progressive scientists, who deplored England's failure to recognize the importance of scientific achievement even in the face of her increasing industrial and technological power, and who viewed with alarm the widening gap between English and Continental scientific progress. Indeed, this issue had been the primary motivating force behind the formation of the Analytical Society of which Babbage was a founding member: "Reform of science had been the credo of the militant young liberals of the Analytical Society from its early boisterous meetings. Their first objective, the introduction of the Continental notation in calculus, was effectively secured by the early 1820s. The work of Babbage, Herschel and others was beginning to restore the reputation of English mathematics, and foundations were being laid for the English school of De Morgan and Boole. But the young Analyticals had far more ambitions targets in view" (Hyman, Charles Babbage [1982], p.88). Two versions of the Decline were published: the more usual "octavo" (as here) or small-paper edition, containing 228 pages; and a large-paper "quarto" edition of only 120 pages (Van Sinderen 1980, no. 39. OOC 38). According to a note tipped into the Honeyman copy of the quarto edition, only 'a few [copies were] printed in Quarto, for the use of those Gentlemen who may wish to bind up the Work with the Philosophical Transactions for the Year 1830', a nicely satirical touch in a work that was primarily a diatribe against the Royal Society The order of the editions has not been established. Normal practice was to print large-paper-copies after the smaller edition, although in this case the two could have been published simultaneously. *Sir James Paget (1814-99), surgeon and pathologist. Paget became a student at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London 1834 at the age of 16, and in his first year there he showed his promise by discovering in human muscle the parasitic worm that causes trichinosis (the same year in which Charles Babbage began the conceptual design of his "analytical engine"). He became eligible to practice in 1836 and went on to become a distinguished physiologist and one of the fathers of modern pathology. In 1858 he was appointed surgeon extraordinary to Queen Victoria, and in 1863 surgeon in ordinary to Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, being knighted in 1871. Paget certainly knew Babbage and although he presumably met him a few years after this work was published the inscription is undated and could conceivably be almost contemporaneous. - Visit our website for additional images and information.         Naturhistorische Alpenreise.

      Solothurn, bey J. Amiet-Lutiger / Leipzig in Commission bey Friedrich Fleischer, 1830, - in-8vo, XVI + 1 Bl. + 378 S., 1 gest. Frontisp. nach Friedrich Dietler, 1 gest. Titel mit Vignette nach Martin Disteli, 16 (davon 5 gef.) Kupfertafeln (Profilansichten), 2 gef. kolorierte Karten und 9 neue gef. Tabellen berechneter Höhenunterschiede, Ex-Libris ?Arnold Schmuziger?, Halb-Lederband (Ende XIX. Jhd.) Rücken mit Vergoldung, orangefarbenes Rückenschild, orig. Buchdeckel, gelber Schnitt. Erste Ausgabe eines der Hauptwerke der frühen alpinen Literatur und erste Gletscherüberquerung mit Darstellungen von Martin Disteli. Schönes Exemplar. Klassiker der geologischen und alpinen Literatur. Der berühmte Frontispiz-Kupferstich stellt eine Kletterei der Expedition an der Bärenwand im Aufstieg von der Stufensteinalp auf dem Weg ins Rottal dar (gestochen nach Fr. Dieter), und ist eine der frühesten, wenn nicht sogar die früheste Darstellung einer Bergbesteigung in den Schweizer Alpen. Er wurde ebenso wie die Vignette (Rast auf dem Rottalgletscher) von Disteli auch als Aquarell ausgeführt (vgl. Abb. in Leitess, Noseda, Wiebel 1977 S. 32). "Das Werk ist eines der wichtigsten Bücher zur Naturgeschichte und Struktur der Alpen in der frühen Fachliteratur. Charakteristisch für den Text ist die Mischung aus naturwissenschaftlicher Exaktheit und Terminologie und pathetischer Ergriffenheit angesichts der Naturphänomene. Wissenschaftsgeschichtlich bedeutsam sind die tabellarischen Darstellungen und die Alpenprofile" (Wiebel).Hugi's «Naturhistorische Alpenreise» gehört neben Christ's «Pflanzenleben», Heer's «Urwelt der Schweiz» und Tschudi's «Tierleben der Alpenwelt» zu den vier klassischen Hauptwerken der Schweiz. Franz Joseph Hugi, Geologe, verschaffte sich einen grossen Ruf durch kühne Erforschungen von bis dahin für unzugänglich gehaltenen Gletscherregionen, so 1828 und 1829 im Gebiete der Jungfrau und des Finsteraarhorns.Als Naturforscher drang er in jene Gletschergebiete des Berner Oberlandes ein, deren erste nähere Durchforschung das Werk der Familie Meyer gewesen war und die während 15 Jahren niemand mehr betreten hatte. Hugi war vielleicht der erste Reisende, der (zum Zweck geologischer Untersuchungen) das Rotthal bei Lauterbrunnen gründlich und bis in seinen Hintergrund durchforschte und während dreier aufeinander folgender Jahre (1827-1829) voll anerkennenswerter Ausdauer mit wissenschaftlich geschulten Gehilfen und starken Kolonnen von Führern und Trägern versuchte, die Jungfrau von dieser abschreckend erscheinenden Seite aus zu ersteigen, ein Unterfangen, dem angesichts der übrigen, der Durchführung sich entgegenstellenden natürlichen Schwierigkeiten und dem Widerwillen der Führer gegen das Unternehmen, ein Erfolg versagt bleiben mußte.Mit vorliegendem Werk lenkte Hugi die Aufmerksamkeit der für Forschungen dieser Art empfänglichen Kreise wieder auf das Alpengebiet des Berner Oberlandes. Er war der erste Tourist, der es gewagt hatte, die Gletscher im Winter zu begehen, ja der sogar dort wochenlang unter den schwierigsten Verhältnissen ausharrte.?F.J. Hügi est un savant suisse, géologue, glaciologue et paléontologue, contemporain de Desor et Agassiz. Il enseigne les sciences naturelles à l?école cantonale de Solothurn (Soleure). Il réalise de nombreuses explorations dans les Alpes bernoises, dont une tentative poussée au Finsteraarhorn en 1828; l?année suivante lors d?une nouvelle tentative, ses guides J. Leuthold et J. Wahren parviennent les premiers au sommet (Hugi s?étant foulé le pied, dut rester en retrait). Il fonde en 1833 la Société soleuroise des sciences naturelles et est nommé docteur honoris causa de l?université de Berne. L?ouvrage in-8° est illustré d?un frontispice, d?une vignette de titre, de 2 cartes, 16 planches (panoramas au trait et coupes géologiques) et 9 tableaux hors-texte? (Perret, Regards sur les Alpes, 100 livres d?exception, 1515-1908. Notice 51). Reliure en d.-cuir (début XXème), dos orné or avec pièce de titre orange, plats cartonnées originales d?époque. Erste deutsche Ausgabe des Berichts über die dritte Weltreise des russischen Flottenkapitäns Otto von Kotzebue mit dem Anhand von Johann Friedrich Eschscholtz "Uebersicht der zoologischen Ausbeute". - Sabin 38286. Henze III, 69. Borba de Moraes I, 373. - "Im März 1823 wurde Otto von Kotzebue zum Leiter einer weiteren Weltreise wissenschaftlichen Charakters bestimmt, die die Ergebnisse der Rurik-Expedition vervollständigen sollte. Er beaufsichtigte zunächst den Bau und die Ausrüstung des Schiffs, das den Namen Predprijatije trug und im Sommer 1823 mit 145 Personen an Bord von Kronstadt aus in See stach. An Bord befanden sich als Wissenschaftler der Physiker Emil Lenz, der Astronom Ernst Wilhelm Preuß (1796–1839), der Mineraloge Ernst Hofmann (1801–1871) und erneut der Naturforscher Eschscholtz. Vor der Abreise wurde die Order an Kotzebue dahingehend ergänzt, dass er die russischen Niederlassungen auf Kamtschatka mit Vorräten versorgen und den Schleichhandel ausländischer Schiffe an der russisch-amerikanischen Küste unterbinden sollte. Die Predprijatije war zur Durchsetzung dieses Ziels mit 24 Kanonen bestückt. Die Aufgaben der Expedition waren nun gleichermaßen wissenschaftlicher wie handelspolitischer Natur. Die eingeschlagene Route um Kap Horn nach Talcahuano in Chile und weiter nach Kamtschatka ähnelte derjenigen der ersten von Kotzebue geführten Expedition. Neben San Francisco besuchte er auch erneut die Marshallinseln. Dabei vermaß er erstmals den Bikini-Atoll, dem er den Namen Eschscholtz-Inseln gab. Nachdem die Predprijatije 1826 nach Russland zurückgekehrt war, wurde Kotzebue zum Fregattenkapitän befördert und in Kronstadt stationiert. Für seine Verdienste erhielt er den St.-Annen-Orden zweiter Klasse" (Wikipedia Abruf vom 31.07.2017). - Titelblätter gestempelt. Kl. Einrisse im Falz (ohne Verlust) mit Tesafilm geklebt.         Journal of an Embassy from the Govenor-General of India to the Courts of Siam and Cochin China;

      London: Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley, [and] Published for Henry Colburn, by R. Bentley (and 2 others, Edinburgh and Dublin),, 1830 & 1834. exhibiting a view of the actual state of those kingdoms. [Together with:] Journal of an Embassy from the Governor General of India to the Court of Ava... With an appendix, containing a description of fossil remains, by Professor Buckland and Mr. Clift. 2 volumes, octavo. Original drab brown fine diaper-grain cloth, spines gilt lettered and blind ruled, blind ornamental panelling on sides, yellow coated endpapers. Siam: 12 plates (7 folding, 5 double-page), large folding map of "Siam and Cochin China", plan of Bangkok, folding map and plan of Singapore, 4 wood-engraved plates, 7 wood-engraved vignettes, folding letterpress table of vocabularies. Ava: 5 plates (4 folding, one double-page), large folding map of "Burman Dominions and adjacent Countries", folding plan of Ava, one wood-engraved plate, 5 wood-engraved vignettes. A touch of foxing in places. An excellent set, the hinges not cracked. First octavo editions, second overall, following the firsts of 1828 and 1829. These pioneering and handsomely-illustrated works on Siam (Thailand), Cochin China (Vietnam) and Ava (Burma), are based on the first-hand experience of the Scottish orientalist and colonial administrator John Crawfurd (1783-1868). "On resuming service in India in 1821 [after accompanying Lord Minto's expedition to Java] Crawfurd was appointed to head a mission to Siam and Vietnam, with the primary objective of opening up commerce. He made little headway with the suspicious local authorities and achieved no political and little commercial advantage, despite instructions to seek trade on liberal terms without demanding the exclusive privileges customary in the past. But the official report, which he submitted on his return to Calcutta in December 1822, provided invaluable information. When Sir Stamford Raffles retired from the residency of Singapore in June 1823, he appointed Crawfurd as his successor. Crawfurd was impatient and quick-tempered, but Singapore prospered under his stewardship. An ardent free trader, he pruned administrative expenses, abolished port fees, and confined taxes to pleasures, vices, and extravagance, such as opium, alcohol, and gambling. His major achievement was to propose and negotiate a treaty of friendship and alliance, signed with the local chiefs on 2 August 1824, ceding the whole island to the East India Company. In March 1826 Crawfurd was posted to be civil commissioner in Rangoon at the end of the First Anglo-Burmese War and was appointed by the governor-general to head a mission to the Burmese court at Ava, 500 miles up the Irrawaddy River. He was warned to adopt a conciliatory attitude and negotiate a commercial treaty on the basis of equality. He left Rangoon in September 1826, and on his journey along the Irrawaddy he made notes on geology and collected seven large chests of wood, bone, and rock specimens. He was received fairly courteously by the Burmese king but encountered many frustrations in Ava. The commercial treaty concluded on 23 November 1826 offered little, but Crawfurd presented a comprehensive report on Burma on his return to Calcutta in February 1827. The following year Crawfurd retired permanently to England, where he published the accounts of his various missions: Journal of an Embassy from the Governor General of India to the Courts of Siam and Cochin China (1828) and Journal of an Embassy from the Governor General of India to the Court of Ava (1829). These were well received, and both volumes were reprinted in more popular format a few years later" (ODNB). Sets of both works paired together and in such exceptional original condition - the cloth bindings bright and sharp cornered - are most uncommon.

        Two autograph letters signed to Richard Taylor

      Upton 1830 - Fry, Elizabeth (1780-1845). Two autograph letters signed to Richard Taylor (1781-1858), dated 11/24/1830 and 12/1/1830 respectively. 4pp. total on 3 sheets. Upton, 1830. 230 x 187 mm.; 187 x 117 mm. Some marginal soiling, blank corner torn from address leaf of second letter, but very good. From British prison reformer Elizabeth Fry, whose tireless efforts on behalf of British prisoners led to important legislation improving the condition and administration of British prisons; in 1818 she became the first woman to present evidence in Parliament when she testified before a House of Commons committee on the state of British houses of correction. Her correspondent was Richard Taylor, publisher, journal editor and founder of the firm of Taylor and Francis. Fry's philanthropy arose from her Christian faith: A devout Quaker, she believed that the answer to all humanity's ills lay in the Bible, and to encourage reliance on the Scriptures she assembled a small volume of Biblical quotations titled Texts for Every Day in the Year; Principally Practical and Devotional (London: Hamilton, Adams & Co., 1830), which she had printed for personal distribution. The letters we are offering pertain to the printing of this work, which was done by Richard Taylor's firm at Red Lion Court in Fleet Street: "I have endeavoured to show upon half a sheet of paper my wishes for the plan of heading the texts perhaps thou cou[d]st have it done for me simply at the beginning of each month having the name put in an apostrophe thus Mo. 1st (Jany.) M 2 (Feb) . . . Afterwards I prefer the simple number the same as the days & weeks . . . [11/24/1830]. "I at last forward thee the remainder of the texts and I shall be much obliged to thee to have them printed as quickly as possible that they may be ready before the end of the year for circulation . . . I have recollected since sending my last note, my odd mistake in calling a parenthesis an apostrophe. I can only attribute it to an absence of mind to which I am too liable . . . [12/1/1830]."         An Atlas of the World Comprehending Separate Maps of its various Countries Constructed & drawn from the latest Astonomical & Geographical Observations

      James Wyld, London 1830 - Published by James Wyld, Successor to Mr. Faden, 5 Charing Cross. All maps and charts present including world maps to the front. Borders are almost certainly hand coloured. This truly is a superb copy of this highly sought after atlas. All the more so due to its provenance of having belonged to AWF and JFC Fuller from whose descendants' collection this was acquired. The front free end paper is inscribed "Walter Fuller, June 1892" in black ink. (This was AWF's first name.) his brother, JFC, is more famous as a military historian and pioneer of mechanized warfare during WW1.) There is a further pencilled inscription explaining the book in AWF's hand (as in many of the books in the collection.) This reads "Interesting maps of N.S.W. & Tasmania when only those parts of Aust. were colonised" Making this copy a really unique piece. There is a little browning and foxing thoroughout, but nothing at all severe. Quarter leather with marbled paper covered boards. A little edge wear especially to leather at the head and foot of the spine and the fore edge corners. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

He may have been Swiss, or from Courmayeur. This aquatint is from a set of publisher?s samples of Alpine views, largely around the Chain of Mont Blanc, originally taken round the countryside by a salesman to show potential buyers, hence the colouring and finishing are exceptionally fine and of the highest quality.Please notify before visiting to see a book.
