Oeuvres Choisies de Colardeau

Paris - Librairie de Lecointe, 1830 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The works of Charles-Pierre Colardeau. Colardeau (1732 - 1776) was a French poet. His most notable works are an imitation of Eloisa to Abelard by Alexander Pope and a translation of the first two sections of Night-Thoughts by Edward Young. The relatively small size of his uvre is attributed by some to his fragile health (he died aged only 43) and by others to proverbial laziness. In the original French. Includes Caliste (1760), tragdie, Lettre dHlose Abailard (1756), Les Hommes de Promthe (1774), Eptre M. Duhamel de Denainvilliers (1774), Le Patriotisme (1762), and other poems. Condition: In a full calf binding. Externally, a trifle rubbed with some scuffs to boards and wear to extremities. Some minor loss to head of spine. Hinges strained. Internally, firmly bound. Reflections on the decline of science in England and on some of its causes

London: Printed for B. Fellowes, Ludgate Street; and J. Booth, Duke Street, Portland Place, 1830 Cloth, new endpapers; interior with occasional brown spots, otherwise a very good copy from the library of Arnold Thackray with his bookplate. First edition of this polemic attack against the Royal Society. Babbage, a founding member of the Analytical Society, in a political rant decimates the president of the disorganized Royal Society for his power, for its pandering to the nobility, and to the system of management by which the Royal Society is governed. ?"The Society has, for years, been managed by a party, or coterie . . . united by no expressed compact or written regulations, but who act together from a community of principles. The great object of this, as of all other parties, has been to maintain itself in power, and to divide, as far as it could, all the good things amongst its members. It has usually consisted of persons of very moderate talent, who have had the prudence, whenever they could, to associate themselves with other members of greater ability, provided these latter would not oppose the system?" (p. 141). The Analytic Society was originally formed to close a perceived gap between the acknowledged importance of science on the Continent and the lack of motivation in promoting English science, specifically by the Royal Society. One result of the efforts of the Analytic Society was to have Leibnizian calculus supercede Newtonian calculus in British education. ?'This work excited a vigerous correspondence in the pages of the Philosophical Magazine that led to Babbage?'s reputation as a thorn in the side of the British scientific establishment?" - Tomash Catalogue, B.51. This book is also frequently cited as a reference to defining means of cheating in science. Babbage includes his observations of hoaxing, forging, ?"trimming?" and ?"cooking. Babbage (1792-1871), noted English mathematician and Lucasian Professor at Trinity College, invented the speedometer, the cowcatcher, and the analysis now termed ?"operations research.?" His other contributions included a uniform postage rate, parcel post, submarine navigation, and Greenwich Time Signals.

Leopoldo Cicognara handwritten letter in Italian to his friend Alessandro Zanetti

[Italy]: Leopoldo Cicognara, 1830. 1st Edition. No binding. Good. 26cm x 20.5cm (10-1/4 x 8 inches), Handwritten letter in Italian, 2 sided, was folded to 8.7cm x 10.5cm (3 x 4-1/8 inches) now flat. Letters from Leopoldo Cicognara do not often come to market and this 1830 letter to his friend Zanetti will present more insight into Cicognara. Some spotting and two right edge pieces of paper are missing affecting a couple of letter in the text, otherwise in good condition. Leopoldo Cicognara was born to a noble family in Ferrara, Italy. He was an Italian poet and an amateur artist, a patron of the arts, and one of the founding fathers of the discipline of Art History. He held various political and diplomatic posts and was also president of the Fine Arts Academy of Venice from 1808 to 1827. He possessed a magnificent library of over 5,000 works on painting, sculpture and architecture, as well as the relationship of these arts with literature, music, philosophy and other branches of knowledge. The Cicognara Library also contains biographies of artists and poets, treatises and manuals on various arts, studies of emblems, funeral rites, numismatics, Roman and Greek antiquities, and architectural dictionaries. It was acquired by the Vatican Library in 1824, under the pontificate of Leo XII, creating the Cicognara Collection. Cicognara had published a catalogue of his library in 1821 (ragionato Catalogo dei libri d'arte e d'Antichità posseduti Cicognara Conte dal), which has become an irreplaceable guide to art history sources from antiquity to the early nineteenth century. quoted from University of Navarra web site.Alessandro Zanetti: After Cicognara s death in 1834, his relative Alessandro Zanetti, with whom he had been closely associated, prepared a catalogue of his nielli and engravings, with a view to their sale, which was published at Venice in 1837, by the title of " Le Premier Siecle de la Calcographie." quoted from The Early Italian Prints in the British Museum, 1886.

Newcastle: W. Boag, printer, 1830. Broadside measuring 390 x 255 mm., fine. Convicts awaiting trial in 1830. Scarce ephemeral broadside listing the name, age and alleged crimes of some 46 convicts held at the Gaols of Durham, Newcastle and Northumberland. A' Marosvasarhelyt 1829-be nyomtatott Arithemetika Elejének részint röviditett, reszint bovitett, általán jobbitott, 's tisztáltabb kiadásaMarosvasarhely: Kali Simon, 1843. First edition.

An exceptionally fine copy, in the original boards, of Bolyai's work on the foundations of mathematics, and the last of the great works of Farkas Bolyai. It is in part based on the author's Az arithmethica eleje published in 1830 and on the second volume (the first volume being on geometry) of his magnum opus the Tentamen juventutem studiosam elementa matheseos purae, 1832-33, to which it frequently refers. This work enlarges and extends Bolyai's investigations into the principles of mathematics. Farkas Bolyai (1775-1856) was a close friend of Gauss and regarded by the latter as the only man who fully understood Gauss' metaphysics of mathematics. "He can be taken as a precursor of Gottlob Frege, Pasch, and Georg Cantor; but, as with many pioneers, he did not enjoy the credit that accrued to those that followed him" (DSB). He had worked on the parallel postulate and the possibilities of a non-Euclidean geometry from his earliest days as a mathematician in Göttingen, and had corresponded with Gauss on the subject, even sending him a manuscript entitled Theoria parallelarum, but it was his son János who was to achieve the breakthrough.
The text refers frequently to Gauss and Lagrange, along with other mathematicians such as Maclaurin and Taylor.
Bolyai began this work in 1829 but only a short introduction and an excerpt were printed (in 1830) because he was under pressure with preparing for publication the Tentamen. At the time when this work was published, Bolyai was in despair as neither his son Janos nor he himself had received any recognition. He desperately wrote to Gauss (January 18th, 1848): 'Some years ago I have published another attempt [the present work] in Hungarian but without any results - Mathematics does not grow in this "China".' Only one more letter to Gauss followed (February 6th 1853) before Bolyai's death in 1856.. 8vo (207x123 mm), pp. xliv, 386, with two folding lithographed plates on blue paper, one with six folding slips with grey and pink wash colouring; some very occasional and light foxing, a very fine copy, entirely unrestored in original blue boards with paper label to spine. Very rare
