Nouvelle Edition. Prix: 80 f. Réduit pour Piano: 60 f. [Piano-vocal score]

Paris: Melles. Erard [PNs E. No. 1000.; No. 1000.; 1000.], 1830. Probable First Edition of the piano-vocal score for the the second version of the opera. Relatively scarce. Devriès and Lesure Vol. I, Part I, pp. 65-66. OCLC nos. 49827396, 98524403. Fernand Cortez, to a libretto by Etienne de Jouy and Joseph Alphonse d'Esmenard, was first performed at the Paris Opéra on November 28, 1809. Spontini "dominated serious grand opera of the early 19th century in Paris and later in Berlin... [His] second grand opera aimed to overwhelm the audience, not only with such sensational elements derived from the mélodrame à grand spectacle as the appearance of live horses, but also by means of massive ensembles with opposing choruses and sophisticated da lontano effects. In this respect, and in the search for historical precision, the work can be seen as a precursor of grand opera, but in the glorification of a military commander Jouy intended to introduce an element of epic into the tragédie lyrique. For all the military vigour of the piece, however, Spontini's score, with its wealth of contrasts, also carried conviction in the lyrical emotion of Amazily and the touching prisoners' scenes, thus tending to cancel out the requisite propaganda effect. This is probably why the opera was withdrawn after only 13 performances when first staged, and only a thorough revision (performed at the Paris Opéra on 28 May 1817) helped the work to achieve lasting success." Anselm Gerhard in Grove Music Online. Timothy Mather Spelman (1891-1970) was an American composer, descended from two major figures in early American history: Cotton Mather (1663-1728) and his father Increase Mather (1639-1723).. Folio.         Illustrated manuscript of Arachnida, crustaceans and other animals.

Unpublished, ca. 1830. Oblong folio (32.5 x 25.0 cm). 49 leaves with original watercolours; several mounted. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards.= A fine, versatile manuscript in its original binding, by the French zoologist and arachnologist Charles Constantin de Théis. De Théis was a student under Baron Charles Athanase Walckenaer (1771-1852), the French zoologist, entomologist, geographer and biographer whose main entomological interest was arachnids as well. De Théis was known to be a competent zoologist (and had a spider named after him), but he did not publish any papers on his own. This, however, seems to be a manuscript on arthropod, and in particular arachnid, diversity, although it is enriched with original drawings of many animals from other classes, principally of herpetological and malacological interest. Detailed notes in a fine hand, most likely by De Théis himself, accompany many illustrations. Armorial bookplate of de Théis "Adspirante deo", with three windmills, mounted on the front pastedown. Generally in a very good state, apart from a few small smudges, and a few leaves with light age-toning. A very good, unique item.

Generalpardon an alle schlechte Komödianten, erlassen von M. G. Saphir, siehe Bazar No. 304. den 1ten Decbr. 1830. [München, Kranzfelder?, 1830].

Selten. Goedeke IX, 549 (Nachtrag zu S. 161, 24: "Abschied von Bayern"). Maillinger II, 395.

Binding, Fine- Guild of Women Binders] Italy, A Poem

      T. Cadell, London 1830 - Exquisitely bound by The Guild of Women Binders in full brown crushed morocco with highly expressive Art Nouveau design on both covers featuring three repeating long stylized stem and blossom motifs, stamped in gilt, with similar on spine. Also with uncommonly wide dentelles heavily gilt with leaf and vine pattern, and central turquoise morocco doublures, free fly endsheets are vellum over paper, highlighted with a gilt heart on each corner. With the book label of Michael Tomkinson on front free fly. An unusual and certainly distinctive binding design by the GWB, in fine condition. There is a binder notation commonly seen from Guild Bindings in back, which states: "Miss SL," or perhaps "Miss SC," in the place we commonly see as the chief designer, but we were unable to actually ascribe which member of the Guild this might refer to.         Papers of Shipments and Accounts Paid of the Ship Ann Parry. Including payment to Captain Kinnard of $200 PLUS MORE

[Portsmouth, N.H.], 1830. 10 documents. Nine docketed. 4to & Folio. Old folds, Very Good. 10 documents. Nine docketed. 4to & Folio. MARITIME. The 328-ton, barque, Ann Parry was built at Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1825, by William Badger. She took her maiden voyage on December 5, sailing to Savannah, Georgia and Liverpool England with a cargo of southern cotton. She spent seven years as a merchant vessel until she was purchased in 1832, by the Portsmouth Pier Company, owned by brothers Alexander and Charles Ladd, and converted into a whaler. Her first whaling cruise lasted three years, taking her to ports in Chile and Hawaii. She rounded "the Horn" many more times and sailed from Portsmouth to the far-flung waters of Madascar. Writing from aboard ship in the 1840s, Leander Huntress kept a journal, now in the archive at the Portsmouth Athenaeum. The journal describes and illustrates a long voyage filled with distant ports and constant squabbles between crewmen. In this 1841 section, author Kenneth Martin transcribes Huntress' typically frustrating efforts to capture right whales in the Indian Ocean. After her storied tenure as a whaler, the Ann Parry sailed for San Francisco in 1849, with new owners and passengers heading to the Gold Rush. From her new home on the West Coast, she freighted brick to Bellingham Bay (including the bricks used to build the oldest brick building in the State of Washington, which became the territorial courthouse in 1863) and lumber from the shores of Puget Sound. On the evening of January 3, 1865, while anchored in San Francisco Bay in fog and high winds, she was dragged ashore during a storm and battered beyond repair. THESE PAPERS PRE-DATE HER WHALING DAYS.

Ce Qu'On Dit et Ce Qu'On Pense

Gihaut Frères, Villain, Charles Tilt., Paris, London - Circa 1830. Folio, 35 by 26.5 cm. 48 hand-colored lithographed plates illustrating many manifestations of hypocrisy. The plates are numbered consecutively up to 36, at which point they jump to 49 and then continue consecutively up to 60, for a total of 48. As the three copies of this work found on OCLC First Search (Morgan, Neuchatel, Geneve) have at most 48 plates, and there is no evidence whatsoever that anything was excised from this book, it is our belief that the missing numbers were deliberately withdrawn, or are early versions of the final group of plates. Providing some circumstantial backing for this theory is that Plate No. 49, the first of the final group, depicts a crowd greeting Louis Philippe with "Vive le Roi!" after the July Revolution in which he rose to power. In any case, there is no title page, nor would there ever have been one, we believe, as this was essentially a collection of plates. Four of the early plates were lithographed by Villain. Almost all the plates, including one of the ones credited to Villain, are also marked by Gihaut, unless there are no names at all. Adding to the confusion or complexity of the printing is that Charles Tilt, the London publisher, is credited, along with Gihaut, on a number of the later ones. Abrasions and rubbing to the morocco. Soiling to the cloth boards. Scattered soiling to the margins, most evident on the first plate. Last plate with two paper repairs. Imagery is however uniformly bright and clean.

Lawyer, versatile legal author, philanthropist and reformer, Montagu is best known for his tireless efforts to reform bankruptcy law and abolish capital punishment, work he pursued with considerable success. His call for the reduction of severe punishments puts him in the tradition of Beccaria and Romilly.         Sammelband of Flute Trios

      - Set of three Sammelband volumes of rare trios for three flutes by three flutist-composers of the early nineteenth century. Six works are by Johann Gabrielsky [Gabrielski], German flautist and composer, a contemporary of Boehm, Furstenau and Reicha, who performed in the theater orchestra of Stettin and as a royal chamber musician in Berlin. Five works are by the French flautist Benoit Tranquille Berbiguier, composer of many works for flute including several instructional works, and one work is by the German flautist and composer Anton Bernhard Fürstenau."Berbiguier strongly advocated a larger flute sound than was usual in France. The perfection of his technique was admired, as was the sweetness of his tone, although at least one of his pupils regarded it as rather coarse. His adherence to the Bourbons led him to flee Paris during the Revolution of 1830 and he settled in Pontlevoy, remaining there until his death. Berbiguier, like several others of his time, was a left-handed player. He composed prolifically for his instrument; among his published works are several good instruction books dating from 1818 to 1838, the last issued posthumously; partial translations into English were also published." (Philip Bate, New Grove.)The son of Caspar Fürstenau, Anton Fürstenau "made his first public appearance as a flautist in Oldenburg at the age of seven and became a member of the Oldenburg court orchestra in 1804. His frequent concert tours with his father took him to Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, Copenhagen and Prague, where he met Carl Maria von Weber in 1815.The year after his father's death he moved to Dresden, where he became first flautist under Weber's direction. He continued to make numerous concert tours, and in 1826 he accompanied Weber to Paris and London. Fétis and others praised Fürstenau's playing for its dexterity and expressiveness; only in England did he have a poor reception, his execution being praised but his tone criticized as inferior to that of Nicholson. He continued to play on the old-fashioned flute; in his Kunst des Flöten-Spiels op.138 (Leipzig, 1909), he voiced his opposition to the new flute and its monotonous sound. A prolific composer for the flute, he wrote variations and rondos on popular opera themes by Weber, Meyerbeer, Halévy, Bellini and others. His concertos exhibit virtuoso writing and an operatic influence in their themes and style; other works for flute, however, show the influence of Weber." (Gaynor G. Jones, New Grove.)Bound together in three volumes as follows:Gabrielsky, Johann Wilhelm. (1791 - 1846). Trois Grands Trios Concertants pour trois Flutes, Oeuv.58 No. 1 - 3.         Eigenh. Briefkonzept. Wien, 14. I. 1830.

1830. 1½ SS. 4to. 8 Bde. Freiburg i. Br. [et al.]: Herder, 1978-1982, Bd. IV [1981], zit. n.       1830. - Small traces of mounting on the reverse; lower left corner fasted with tape; some spotting.

Letter signed ("F MB"). Berlin, 9. IV. 1830.

1830. 4to. 4 pp. on double leaf. Via Carl Klingemann to the German Orientalist Friedrich Rosen (1805-1837) in London, sharing his observations on the cold and malicious nature of the Berliners. The composer laments about the way the denizens seem to make it a point to treat the artists poorly during performances: "On the Festival you already know the details from Klingemann; it has become one of our dearest recollections, and I think it is my best composition. A few weeks later the surgeon declared my knee to be completely cured, and I thought I would be leaving shortly, but then the bitter cold came and I postponed the journey and began a large work (a symphony for orchestra, on which I worked a lot every day; it isn't quite finished, but I hope I can finish it before my departure, as I have already begun the last movement. My illness surprised me a few days before my departure, I had already taken my leave and had started to pack; now I'll have to postpone that at least a fortnight longer, but then I think I can leave; my plan is to go from here via Weimar to Munich, then through the Tyrol to Vienna; from Vienna I intend to go to Venice and Upper Italy in the middle or toward the end of summer, and then I think I'll spend next winter in Rome and Naples, then in the spring, if it is permitted to spend so much time on a plan, go to Paris and then to London from time to time, where there may be much smoke and fog and great crowds and poverty, but where pretty nice people live, too, and where I wasn't so bad off for a year. But will I find the same people there then? On this, as on your whole Let (that is Sanscrit for the future) I ask you to let [me] know a lot, also about everything which is dear and precious to me in London, and about our friends at some length. For you have a sharp eye, professor, and when you are sitting on the blue sofa, or silently making tea, or modestly gliding to and fro in the halls of the university with a light red [folder] and a long black robe, you will still make your accurate remarks and comments, and I expect more from you than from many a Berlin lady. What I have to tell you about Berlin, at last, is little and not pleasant, the people are cold, malicious, and make it a point of honor never to be content; even when [Henriette] Sonntag performed recently she was received quite coldly and was palpably slighted in favor of the others in the cast; her sister, who performed the next evening, was almost completely hissed from the stage, for which the other faction took revenge, and in their first scene (in Othello), all the participants were hissed at and Mme. Sonntag had a curtain call, and at that they speak, think, and do nothing differently than Mme. Sonntag and the factions for and against her. But is such formation of factions something a reasonable and interested public should do and doesn't it spoil any enjoyment of the work of art and all joy of the artist? But that's how they are in big and little things, and the Flower Market that opened yesterday in the University Gardens, for which a single gardener has obtained a monopoly, is just as good a proof of it as the dearth of operas other than by Spontini and Auber for which the Royal Theater has in turn obtained a monopoly, and like the monotony of the parties and conversations here; God will improve this when He has nothing to do but that, but I'm afraid He'll get other things and so much to reform that the Berliners' turn won't come for a long time, so for now they are good enough. Let me know what the Johnstons are doing, whether Ritter is still the same as back then, and whether Mühlenfels has been successfully introduced to society and speaks French with Federita. Let me know, too, about the stone monkeys, the wooden chairs from King Edmund the Cannibal's time, and the scraped-off portraits. My chests from England arrived a few days ago and filled me with longing again. Have you been back to Atwood's again since then, and did you entertain the fellow with some Ikojan Atchi? You see how I have learned from you. In short, write me about each and every thing, but especially, write me [...]" (transl.). - Friedrich Rosen became Professor of Sanscrit at the University of London (later University College) in 1827, at the age of twenty-two. Carl Klingemann was Mendelssohn's close friend and collaborator who wrote the words for many of the composer's songs. Karl Wilhelm Ludwig Heyse had been Mendelssohn's tutor until 1827. The Festival is possibly the Grosse Festmusik zum Dareifest (Grand Festive Music for the Durer Celebration) of 1828. The Symphony may be the Fingal's Cave Overture written in 1830. One of the Liechtenstein songs is doubtless Frühlingslied (Song of Spring), op. 19, no. 1.

Napoleon Bonaparte was a French military and political leader who rose to prominence during the French Revolution and led several successful campaigns during the Revolutionary Wars. As Napoleon I, he was Emperor of the French from 1804 until 1814, and again in 1815. Napoleon dominated European and global affairs for more than a decade while leading France against a series of coalitions in the Napoleonic Wars. He won most of these wars and the vast majority of his battles, building a large empire that ruled over continental Europe before its final collapse in 1815. One of the greatest commanders in history, his wars and campaigns are studied at military schools worldwide. He also remains one of the most celebrated and controversial political figures in human history.
