Interieur de New York, rue de Provost et Chapel, No. 3

Paris & London: Ardit & Coindet, 1830. Very good condition. A handsome color lithograph of a snowy city scene at Provost Street and Chapel, from Jacques Milbert's superlative collection of views entitled "Itineraire Pittoresque du Fleuve Hudson et des Parties Laterales de l'Amerique du Nord...". Milbert, who trained as an engineer, came to the United States in 1815 and stayed for 7 years. As drawing was a compulsory part of any engineers training, he was to show his talent in the quality of the 53 views he made of places he visited. They form one of the most accurate portrayals of the Northeast in the period. They are also an early example of the use of lithography for topographical prints. 'As an artist, Milbert loved to paint American landscapes, particularly those which showed the Hudson, "King of Rivers," flowing majestically through the mountains .... The pictures of what he saw, as of the time he drew them, constitute a unique and valuable record.' ((Sherman, 'A French Explorer in the Hudson Valley'). Titles in French, English, Latin and German. Lithograph with later hand color, very clean, some fox spotting and one closed tear in wide margins not affecting image. Printed image 12 1/2 x 9 3/4" includes caption, with large margins (19 1/2 x 13").

Above all in 1810 he founded the first viable and efficient Savings Bank in a small building in Ruthwell which proved so successful that it was copied all over the country and he was known as the Father of the Savings Bank.         [Binding, Fine- Guild of Women Binders] Italy, A Poem

London: T. Cadell, 1830. First edition. Exquisitely bound by The Guild of Women Binders in full brown crushed morocco with highly expressive Art Nouveau design on both covers featuring three repeating long stylized stem and blossom motifs, stamped in gilt, with similar on spine. Also with uncommonly wide dentelles heavily gilt with leaf and vine pattern, and central turquoise morocco doublures, free fly endsheets are vellum over paper, highlighted with a gilt heart on each corner. With the book label of Michael Tomkinson on front free fly. An unusual and certainly distinctive binding design by the GWB, in fine condition. There is a binder notation commonly seen from Guild Bindings in back, which states: "Miss SL," or perhaps "Miss SC," in the place we commonly see as the chief designer, but we were unable to actually ascribe which member of the Guild this might refer to.

Shakespeare's Dramatic Works; WIth A Life Of The Author, And A Selection Of Notes, Critical, Historical, And Explanatory

London - J. F. Dove, 1830 Book. Near Fine. Hardcover. A handsomely bound complete set of Shakespeare's plays, with a life of the author prefacing the first volume, and with numerous plates of illustrations. A remarkably well-preserved set from the first half of the 19th century. Each play is preceded by an engraved frontispiece, showing one of the dramatic scenes. Harness was a cleric and man of letters, who was friends with Lord Byron at Harrow. In his preface he protests that editing a set of Shakespeare was a proper thing for him to do, for he had no pastoral duties at the time and needed the money. For his biography of Shakespeare he drew principallyupon the accounts of Rowe, Johnson, Malone, and formed them into a 'connected narrative'. Also included are Rowe's preface, Pope's preface, and Dr Johnson's preface. The plays are arranged in the order they were supposed to have been written. Collated: complete. Condition: In full morocco bindings with gilt borders and gilt detailing and titles to the spines. Externally excellent, with only very light shelf wear. With personal bookplates to each of the front pastedowns. Internally, generally clean and bright, apart from the first hundred pages of volume I, which are spotted and foxed. The plates are for the most part foxed, and have offsetting which stops the set from being fine though it is normal for this set. Firmly bound. Overall: NEAR FINE.

Nouvelle Edition. Prix: 80 f. Réduit pour Piano: 60 f. [Piano-vocal score]

Paris: Melles. Erard [PNs E. No. 1000.; No. 1000.; 1000.], 1830. Probable First Edition of the piano-vocal score for the the second version of the opera. Relatively scarce. Devriès and Lesure Vol. I, Part I, pp. 65-66. OCLC nos. 49827396, 98524403. Fernand Cortez, to a libretto by Etienne de Jouy and Joseph Alphonse d'Esmenard, was first performed at the Paris Opéra on November 28, 1809. Spontini "dominated serious grand opera of the early 19th century in Paris and later in Berlin... [His] second grand opera aimed to overwhelm the audience, not only with such sensational elements derived from the mélodrame à grand spectacle as the appearance of live horses, but also by means of massive ensembles with opposing choruses and sophisticated da lontano effects. In this respect, and in the search for historical precision, the work can be seen as a precursor of grand opera, but in the glorification of a military commander Jouy intended to introduce an element of epic into the tragédie lyrique. For all the military vigour of the piece, however, Spontini's score, with its wealth of contrasts, also carried conviction in the lyrical emotion of Amazily and the touching prisoners' scenes, thus tending to cancel out the requisite propaganda effect. This is probably why the opera was withdrawn after only 13 performances when first staged, and only a thorough revision (performed at the Paris Opéra on 28 May 1817) helped the work to achieve lasting success." Anselm Gerhard in Grove Music Online. Timothy Mather Spelman (1891-1970) was an American composer, descended from two major figures in early American history: Cotton Mather (1663-1728) and his father Increase Mather (1639-1723).. Folio. Full mid-tan calf with decorative blindstamping to edges within double gilt rule, spine with titling gilt, marbled edges. 1f. (title engraved by Aubert Junior), 322 pp. Engraved. Text in French.         La espada de Holofernes.

Bogotá : [Impr. de Bruno Espinosa, por José Ayarza] Small 4to (20 cm; 8"). [2] ff., 154 pp.. 1830 According to the publisher's note in the next to the last paragraph of the prospectus for this publication, "Todo lo que dirémos en el presente Periódico es estractado de una obra anónima, publicada en Francia." The "periodical" was issued weekly between 28 January and 29 July 1830; issues were of 8 pages, except the final one, which was of 10. Quotations and arguments about religion from Voltaire, Rousseau, Bolingbroke, Montesquieu, Bossuet, and many others are woven into this complex and well-reasoned defense of Catholicism and the role it often played as a part of the political entity of the state. => A two-leaf prospectus is bound in before the first issue of the periodical. We do not believe that this is truly a periodical in the sense of a newspaper or magazine, or a series of "extracts" from some larger work, but rather that it is => a complete book printed in parts and issued over a period of time. Palau wrongly asserts that the publication had only 13 numbers and that it ceased with the 6 May issue; he further asserts that it is a periodical production of Presbítero Francisco Margallo. Posada owned only 13 issues and says that Sr. M.M. Tovar "las posee [los] originales" but does not indicate how many issues that was! Posada makes it clear that Margallo was the author/translator. We fail to locate any copies in NUC Pre-1956 or in COPAC, or in Charno's Latin American Newspapers in United States Libraries. WorldCat locates one copy in Colombia. We know of an uncatalogued copy at Vanderbilt University. Recent boards covered in a stone-pattern marbled paper; red morocco label on front cover. A crisp copy with precious few stains. Private ownership stamp in one margin.

Papers of Shipments and Accounts Paid of the Ship Ann Parry. Including payment to Captain Kinnard of $200 PLUS MORE

[Portsmouth, N.H.], 1830. 10 documents. Nine docketed. 4to & Folio. Old folds, Very Good. 10 documents. Nine docketed. 4to & Folio. MARITIME. The 328-ton, barque, Ann Parry was built at Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1825, by William Badger. She took her maiden voyage on December 5, sailing to Savannah, Georgia and Liverpool England with a cargo of southern cotton. She spent seven years as a merchant vessel until she was purchased in 1832, by the Portsmouth Pier Company, owned by brothers Alexander and Charles Ladd, and converted into a whaler. Her first whaling cruise lasted three years, taking her to ports in Chile and Hawaii. She rounded "the Horn" many more times and sailed from Portsmouth to the far-flung waters of Madascar. Writing from aboard ship in the 1840s, Leander Huntress kept a journal, now in the archive at the Portsmouth Athenaeum. The journal describes and illustrates a long voyage filled with distant ports and constant squabbles between crewmen. In this 1841 section, author Kenneth Martin transcribes Huntress' typically frustrating efforts to capture right whales in the Indian Ocean. After her storied tenure as a whaler, the Ann Parry sailed for San Francisco in 1849, with new owners and passengers heading to the Gold Rush. From her new home on the West Coast, she freighted brick to Bellingham Bay (including the bricks used to build the oldest brick building in the State of Washington, which became the territorial courthouse in 1863) and lumber from the shores of Puget Sound. On the evening of January 3, 1865, while anchored in San Francisco Bay in fog and high winds, she was dragged ashore during a storm and battered beyond repair. THESE PAPERS PRE-DATE HER WHALING DAYS.

(Lettera Autografo) di Alfred TENNYSON firmato senza data (c. 1830 - 1892)

S.d. (c. 1830 - 1892).. L'altro fratello poeta è Frederick Tennyson.
