Reg. Med. Edin., necnon Societ. Reg. Phys. Edin. Scoius., et Chirurgus. Adjut. Desig. In Exercitu Bengaliensi.

8vo., original presentation binding of full red calf, boards with wide gilt border of trailing foliate tendrils, with blind stamp central panel, lettered and decorated in gilt on spine, marbled paper endpapers. Pp. [xii]26. Head and tails of spine chipped, a little rubbing to corners and joints otherwise a very good copy. A rare printing of an Edinburgh University dissertation on cholera by David Colville Carruthers, who later was to become Ordinary Physician to the Dundee Cholera Hospital. This presentation copy inscribed opposite p.1 "To James (?) Miller Esq with the best wishes of his friend the author." Printed dedications are to the author's uncle Alexander Ramsay, doctor at the lunatic asylum in Dundee and Carruther's teacher, William Colville, a soldier in Calcutta, his uncle Thomas Colville, serving as well in Calcutta, and James Ogilvy, an Edinburgh surgeon - all dedications printed on separate leaves. The thesis itself opens with a digest of authoritative passages from Hippocrates to Cullen, Sydenham, Bateman and recent medical experience gained by British practitioners in India, Sir James Annesley in particular, who served for more than the first third of the 19th century as a surgeon in India. In comparing outbreaks of cholera in Europe and India Carruthers, assistant surgeon to the army in Bengal, laconically states that in the West the prognosis is frequently positive, whereas on the Subcontinent 'prognosis infelix est'. - This is a rare case of an epidemiological study comparing the course of a disease in two continents. Historical background for this medical dissertation is the so-called First Cholera Pandemic, which began in 1816 in Bengal and spread across India and beyond (as far West as the Caspian Sea), before receding 1826. Hundreds of thousands of Indians and ten thousand British troops died during this pandemic. London was to be hit by a second outbreak in 1832. Copac only lists Edinburgh University, OCLC adds University of Wisconsin and Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin.

        Le rouge et le noir

The first edition, "very rare and extremely sought-after" (Clouzot). One of 750 copies, title vignettes by Henry Monnier. Romantic pastiche binding of half pink calf over marbled boards with small corners, the spine with four delicate crimped raised bands (very lightly sunned) with gilt filets and blindstamped typographic motifs, gilt garlands at head and foot, marbled endpapers.  Le Rouge et le Noir, begun during the Restoration, was only completed four months after the Revolution of July 1830 and did not appear until the final weeks of that year. While all the critics at the time praised the exceptional qualities of the novel, even the most laudatory were shocked by its lively critique of society and of the Jacobinism of Julien Sorel.A superb copy of the first edition, complete with publisher's advertisement leaf, of this great classic of French literature. A broad-margined copy (126 x 210 mm) in an attractive Romantic pastiche binding.   A. Levavasseur Paris 1831 13,5x21,3cm 2 volumes reliés

Glasses appear to fit perfectly and we believe are original to the item. One of the primary virtues of this object is that it's unique. A one of a kind item, it casts off a visual aura utterly unlike anything made today. If you put this item into a an historic mansion or fine \house, it will look like it's been sitting there for a long time. In entirely acceptable antique condition. Not perfect, please review the pictures carefully as they capture the essence of how the item survives. Overall mostly light general age wear, bindings scuffed as typical along extremities and at tips, leather a bit rubbed and worn from handling- but the thing is, still entirely attractive as a set. The leather remains mostly supple and still sound, top lid firmly and solidly still attached. Measures c. 5" tall when laying stacked as intended x 7" long x 4 1/2" deep [A6648] A picture is worth a thousand words. Please examine pictures closely, as what you see pictured is what we will send you. [note: we grade conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws.] [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Album with Many Exceptional Watercolors and Pencil Drawings of Birds, Flowers and Human Subjects

Full Calf. Very Good. An unusually high level of watercolor and pencil sketch work, even by the comparatively high standards of the early 19th century when such skills were widely nurtured among the more comfortable strata of society. The watercolors in particular have a richness and nuance in coloring that jumps off the page, and they bring to mind the color plates one finds in the better botanical books of the period, while the pencil work is highly precise. N.d, circa 1830. 4to. 27 by 21.5 cm. Unpatinated, with content on 82 pages, mostly on the rectos, sometimes on versos. 38 watercolors, 17 pencil drawings. 21 of the watercolors are botanicals, 9 are of birds, 5 of butterflies, and the three remaining include a dog study and an imaginary map. The pencil drawings are mostly human studies, with a few views and animal studies. The majority of watercolors take up the entire page, although some accompany poetry or text. Most of the pencil drawings likewise dominate the page. Hinge broken. Rubbing along joints, and typical moderate wear to the blindstamped leather.

Voyage de l'Arabie Pétrée Par Leon de Laborde et Limont, publié par Leon Laborde.

Paris: Giard, 1830 - Folio (575 × 400 mm). Contemporary green half morocco, marbled sides ruled in gilt, gilt-tooled flat bands to spine forming compartments, titles direct to second gilt, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Armorial bookplate of Scottish collector John Waldie of Hendersyde (1781-1862) with his hand-numbered shelfmark label to front pastedown. Joints and board-edges skilfully restored, morocco sunned to tan in places, front free endpaper creased, pale tide-mark to gutter of a few early leaves, light spotting to half-title and folding map and to margins of a small number of plates, only encroaching on a few of the unmounted images, hinges of double-page plates sometime reinforced. An excellent copy, internally bright and fresh, with rich impressions of the plates. Engraved calligraphic title-page with lithographic vignette mounted on india paper, 45 engravings to the text, and 69 plates comprising 101 discrete images: 44 single lithographs, mounted, of which the El Oueber plate hand-coloured; 10 plates with 2 lithographs to single mounted sheet, 3 plates of 2 lithographs, one mounted and other direct to the plate; 3 plates with multiple lithographs, 3 double-page lithographic plates, 4 engraved plates containing multiple images including map with Laborde's route in colour, and large folding engraved map to rear. First edition. In 1826 the seventeen-year-old de Laborde (1809–1869) travelled with his father across Asia Minor and Syria to Cairo, where he met the engineer Louis Linant de Bellefonds (1799–1883), then in the service of Muhammad 'Ali Pasha. The two Frenchmen decided to set up an expedition to the site of Petra with a view to making drawings of the monuments there, and travelled by way of Suez and Mount Sinai in local dress. Burckhardt (1812) and the team of Irby and Mangles (1817-17) had already visited the ancient Nabataean capital, but Laborde was the first traveller to spend enough time in the area in order to record his observations in the form of plans, views and maps, which remained the only visual representations of Petra available to Western scholars until Roberts's Holy Land (1842-5). "An important work" (Blackmer), with a lengthy introductory essay on different aspects of the region, including travel, pilgrim routes, and trade. Blackmer 929; not in Abbey, Atabey or Burrell.         A New and Improved School Atlas to accompany the practical system of Modern Geography (SIGNED)

Extremely rare and important 1st edn complete with all 12 maps, hand coloured of then America and other parts of the world including a very strange looking Africa (which appears to be called Ethiopia), 2 double pages, Some maps different from 2nd edition of 1837. Ink writing on map of Europe, light browning on Ohio/Indiana (seen here as the West), spots on Asia and one small dot on map of North America. Chart has four engravings of NY, Constantinople, Morocco and an Indian village(?)Tan front cover has sizeable piece of paper removed eliminating text on lower portion, some wear and light foxing, margins a little dirty with occasional smudges but o/w VG copy. Name of Goodhue (J. H.) on upper part of front paper cover. He was important surveyor and mapmaker for New York, RI, CT, Pa in mid 19th c. Olney's Geography has the distinction of having caused a complete revolution in the methods of teaching geography. Olney was a practical instructor, and was dissatisfied with the existing textbooks and treatises, which began with an exposition of the science of astronomy, and, making the centre of the solar system the initial point, developed the scheme until it finally included the earth. Olney reversed this method. He began with the scholar's own continent - in fact, in the very city, town, or village in which he or she lived, and made clear by lucid definitions the natural divisions of land and water, illustrating each instance by the use of maps. His plan was to familiarize the child with the surface of the earth by going from the near to the distant, and from the concrete to the abstract, and this system at once overthrew theoretic geography, and initiated the modern practical and descriptive science.         Deck officer's navigational cyphering book

1830. Unbound. Very good. This manuscript lesson book contains 45 pages of navigational problems, one hand-drawn map ("A Chart from England to the Cape de Verde Islands"), and two illustrations (one of a sailing vessel and one of a Hadley Quadrant). The book was created by Silas Elden of Buxton, Maine in 1812, probably while training to be a deck officer or perhaps serving as a third mate on a commercial vessel. The pages are in nice shape and soundly bound together, however they have separated from their heavy paper cover. The cover is worn with considerable name-doodling by Silas. The pages are in nice shape and soundly bound together, however they have separated from their heavy paper cover. The cover is worn with considerable name-doodling by Silas. Silas has added what are, presumably, his brothers' names to the rear cover. The lessons cover general navigation, Middle Lattitude (sic) Sailing, Mercator Sailing, Navigation by Projection, by Construction, by Inspection, by Calculation, by Gunter, by Travis Sailing, the use of the Hadley Quadrant, and finally "A New Method of finding the Latt. at Sea.". Silas was born into a Saco River farming family whose home and lands were near Salmon Falls. Census records through 1850 show his occupation as "Sailor," however subsequent records indicate that he returned home to stay after inheriting the family farm following his father's death. The Elden family home still exists and has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Apparently a fairly scarce genre of lesson book for as of 2017, no similar books are in the trade, none are listed at OCLC, and there are no auction records at ABPC or the Rare Book Hub.
