        The Book of Mormon

A BEAUTIFUL, UNRESTORED BOOK OF MORMON. Original calf, black leather label, edges sprinkled blue. Head of spine worn, some rubbing. Minor spotting and staining. An excellent, tight, and unrestored copy. First edition of The Book of Mormon, the most important original book in the history of American religion. This book was published just two weeks before the formal founding of the Church of Latter-Day Saints on April 6, 1830. The Book of Mormon is said to be Joseph Smith's translation of the golden tablets revealed to him by the angel Moroni in the hill of "cumorah" near Manchester, New York. Smith dictated the text to Oliver Cowdery, who served as his scribe, and the manuscript was "delivered a few pages at a time to the typesetter, who supplied all the punctuation and paragraphing" (Crawley and Flake). At first E. B. Grandin declined to publish the work, but he undertook the project when Smith's early follower Martin Harris mortgaged his farm to provide the required $3000 security. Negative publicity caused Grandin to suspend the printing project until Smith received a revelation for Harris, that he should "not covet" his property "but impart it freely to the printing of the Book of Mormon which contains the truth and the word of God. ... Pay the debt thou hast contracted with the printer." Harris himself tried to sell copies but complained that "no Body wants them." His farm was sold and the proceeds were paid to the printer. Only in this first edition is Joseph Smith identified on the title-page as the author; in later editions he is described as the translator. The Church catalogue notes that this edition is unique in forbidding freemasonry and polygamy to Mormons; later editions omitted these prohibitions. The Book of Mormon has become one of the most influential American books every published. It serves as the fundamental text for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the fastest growing religion in America, with more than 11 million members worldwide. The Book of Mormon is very scarce in this excellent original condition, complete with the leaf of testimonies of the eleven witnesses to the golden tablets, and with only a small degree of the foxing which plagues almost all copies of the first edition. "I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion" - Joseph Smith. Grolier 100 American Books 37. Crawley & Flake 1.

[BWV 244]. Grosse Passionsmusik nach dem Evangelium Matthaei... Partitur. Seiner Koniglichen Hoheit dem Kronprinzen von Preussen in tiefster Ehrfurcht vom Verleger zugeeignet

Berlin: Schlesinger [PN 1570], 1830. First Edition of the full score. Rare. Schneider 111. Fuld p. 171. Hoboken I, 26. Hirsch IV, 677. Riemenschneider 1988. RISM BB436a. With text by the poet "Picander" [Christian Friedrich Henrici, 1700-1764]. 146 copies printed for subscribers, the list of which includes a considerable number of prominent musicians, most notably Mendelssohn, whose famous performance of the St. Matthew Passion in Berlin on March 11th 1829 heralded a reawakening of interest in Bach's music. Other names found in the subscribers list include A.B. Marx (editor of the work), Meyerbeer, Louis Spohr, and Zelter. Zelter, director of the Singakademie in Berlin and a leading member of the Bach revival, "owned a large collection of Bach works which had formerly been the property of Kirnberger and Agricola. His young pupil Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy was given an opportunity to study these scores. It was due to Mendelssohn's unwavering enthusiasm that in 1829, a century after the Leipzig performance, the St. Matthew Passion was produced under his leadership in Berlin. This was a dazzling revelation to the musical world since - apart from infrequent performances of the motets - hardly any of Bach's great vocal works had been heard before. In the following years, as a direct result of the performance, the two Passions and, in 1845, the Mass in B minor were published." Geiringer: Bach, p. 351.. Folio. recently re-backed and re-cornered in quarter dark green morocco with matching dark green cloth boards, titling to spine gilt. 1f. (title), viii (letterpress text of the Mass in German), [iv] (list of subscribers), 5-324 pp. engraved music. Some light browning and foxing; minor creasing and staining; several signatures split; title and music washed; front free endpaper attached to title at extreme inner margin; occasional lprofessional restoration including to corners and margins; some leaves guarded at gutter.

The original poem's seventeen stanzas were expanded by Southey to fifty-six for this new edition."The first three stanzas of this inspired piece of political cartooning were composed by Southey as he hummed in front of the shaving-mirror one morning at Stowey; the remaining fourteen were dashed off by Coleridge over breakfast" (Holmes, Coleridge: Early Visions, p. 240). A series of pirated editions appeared during the Reform Bill debates of 1830-2, the poem falsely credited to Coleridge's old professor of Greek, Richard Porson. Both Shelley and Byron adapted the poem, as, respectively "The Devil's Walk: a Ballad" (1812) and "The Devil's Drive" (1813)[boxed with:] COLERIDGE, Samuel Taylor & Robert SOUTHEY.         JUSTICE OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES JR.'S DESK

JUSTICE OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES JR.'S DESK (HOLMES, OLIVER WENDELL, Jr.) American Mahogany Butler's Desk from the Homes family home at 296 Beacon Street, Boston.American, ca. 1830. Mahogany. 43 (h) x 47 (w) x 23 (d) inches. Some wear, some loss of veneer. Rectangular top over a fall front pull-out desk fitted with small drawers and pigeonholes over three long drawers resting on bracket feet. Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. lived with his father at 296 Beacon Street in Boston during the physician-poet's declining years. After his father's death in 1892, he inherited the house and continued to live there. The son was childless and his father had only one grandchild, Edward Jackson "Ned" Holmes, born in 1873. In 1897, Ned, then studying law at Harvard, married Mary Beaman (daughter of Charles Cotsworth Beaman). Writing to a friend shortly before the wedding, O. W. Holmes Jr. observed, "I am rather interested by my nephew [Ned]-my only near relation," and a month later he noted, "The nephew is still sub judice as to how much I shall care for him. . . . he is a good lad and if he has some children, which seems to be his function, and my father's race is not destined to extinction, I may find myself becoming more interested and optimistic." In 1903, when Holmes moved to Washington to join the Supreme Court, Ned and Mary moved from 245 Beacon Street into the Holmes family house at 296 Beacon Street. Laid into one of the desk drawers is a pair of letters dated 1927 addressed to Uncle Ned and Aunt Mary Beaman, at 296 Beacon Street, from their nephew, young Charlie Cotsworth Beaman. Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. became sick with pneumonia in 1935, and Ned came down from Boston to see him. The jurist died on March 6, 1935. It was only natural that the family desk be bequeathed to Ned, his "only near relation," who, though without children himself, had relatives on his wife's side, the Beamans. The Beaman family continued to own the desk until we acquired it. PROVENANCE. This handsome American mahogany desk was once owned by Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes (1841-1935) and has the following family provenance: 1) Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., to his nephew 2) "Ned" Holmes and his wife Mary Stacy Beaman; to her daughter 3) Mary Stacy Beaman Lagercrantz at Blow-Me-Down Farm, Cornish, NH, now part of the Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site; 4) Charles Cotsworth Beaman V of Camden, SC.

        Brighthelmston

Brighton: Arthur Wallis, [c. 1830].. Overall 33.4 x 30.3 cm, incorporating the plan of Brighton at 25.6 x 30.3 cm and the prospect of the town from the sea at 7.7 cm x 30.3 cm. Original lithograph after the original copper engraved plan, later hand colouring to both the map and the view, the upper edge of the plan with a decorative cartouche featuring a lettered key to principal places located beneath. Sometime laid down on card, a few small tears without loss, some small surface losses to the upper right corner. Ford, 3, i, describing the view. First published in 1779 from an original survey by these early pioneers in the mapping of Sussex, presumably as an adjunct to their two inch to the mile county map. This printing of the map no doubt appeared as a result of the increased number of visitors to the newly fashionable resort. Neither edition of this very early broadsheet plan of Brighton is common.

- 8°, stitched (spine with small defects at head, foot, and center). Uncut. In very good to fine condition. Old purple stamp of the Duke of Palmela, with ducal coronet above monogram, in blank upper outer corner of title page. (1 l.), 93 pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. When D. Miguel seized the throne of Portugal in 1828 the then Marquês [later Duque] de Palmela sided with the opposition in Oporto and with them was forced to flee to England. D. Miguel had him and other leading opponents condemned to death in absentia and seized their estates, but Dom Pedro I, Emperor of Brazil, appointed Palmela guardian to his daughter, the rightful Queen Maria II, and he acted as her ambassador at the British court. In 1830 he set up the young queen?s regency on Terceira in the Azores. The present work contains the judicial sentence passed by judges loyal to D. Miguel, refuted with extensive annotations.António da Silva Lopes Rocha (1784-1842) obtained a law degree from Coimbra University, held several judicial posts, practiced law in Lisbon for a number of years, eventually belonged to the royal "Conselho", and was auditor do Supremo Conselho de Justiça Militar. A partisan of the liberal cause, he appears to have spent some time in exile during the reign of D. Miguel.Provenance: The extensive library of the Dukes of Palmela, formed mainly in the nineteenth century, was dispersed, for the most part, during the second quarter of the twentieth century through the 1960s. The first to hold the title was D. Pedro de Sousa Holstein (1781-1850), one of the most important Portuguese diplomats and statesmen of the first half of the nineteenth century, who served as prime minister at various times in the 1830s and 1840s. He wrote profusely on politics and economics. (See Grande enciclopedia XX, 123-8.)*** Biblioteca Pública de Braga, Catálogo do Fundo Barca-Oliveira, p. 210.
