        (KLERCKER, GÖRAN af)

Handbok i lust-fyrverkeriet för artillerister och konstälskare. Af G. af K. Kristianstad, F. F. Cedergréens boktryckeri, 1829. 8:o. (4),201,(1) s. & 3 utvikbara litograferade plr.

        MISSISSIPPI KITE

London, 1829. Near fine condition. Audubon's depiction of the Mississippi Kite appeared in 1829 as plate 117 in THE BIRDS OF AMERICA. This plate aroused considerable debate at the time, because many natural historians were quick to note the similarity between the lower of the two birds shown and the rendering of the same species in Alexander Wilson's AMERICAN ORNITHOLOGY, issued in 1809. Audubon was detested by Wilson's loyalists in the Philadelphia scientific establishment of the day. Lead by George Ord, who had completed Wilson's work after his death, they felt that Audubon over-romanticized his work and had no scientific ability. They seized on this obvious cribbing from Wilson as another example of Audubon's perfidy. Indeed, it is difficult to understand why Audubon found it necessary to lift a bird portrait from Wilson, so vastly his inferior as an artist. The other kite shown provides a magnificent contrast, demonstrating how extraordinary Audubon's talents were.

Schwanengesang. In Musik gesetzt für eine Singstimme mit Begleitung des Pianoforte. Letztes Werk. Ite [-IIte] Abtheilung. No. 5370. Preis f3._C.M. f. 2._. f.2_.

Tobias Haslinger Musikverleger, im Hause der ersten österr: Sparkasse am Graben No. 572. Pfoehl sc. [PNs T.H. 5371-5384] [1829], Wien - The rare and elusive First Edition, first issue of both volumes. Deutsch 957 1-13, 965A. Hoboken 14, 685-686. Hirsch IV, 659. "The seven poems each by Rellstab and Heine that make up the posthumously titled Schwanengesang were probably intended for separate publication. From the rippling demisemiquavers of Liebesbotschat to the languid triplets of Ständcher, from the ebullience of Abschied to the sprawling gloom of In der Ferne, the emotional range of the Rellstab settings is staggering. Five of the seven Heine poems are deeply tragic, and with a remakable economy Schubert plumbs the essence of images such as Ihr Bild and Der Doppelgänger. Even if we assume that Schwanengesang was begun earlier, the sheer quantity and quality of productivity in Schubert's last months point to a man who has by sheer force of will resolved not to acknowledge his failing body. But it could just as easily describe a man who knows that his time is almost up – or a man who, in his creative prime and, having survived worse bouts of illness, had no expectation of dying. Whatever the explanation, his productivity remains nothing short of miraculous." Robert Winter et al in Grove Music Online. "Among the women who sang Schubert's compositions simply and naturally, I must mention most particularly Fräulein Henriette von Spaun." Leopold von Sonnleithner, Vienna, November 1, 1857, in Deutsch: Memoirs of Schubert by his Friend, p. 117. According to Deutsch, p. 213, both Henriette and Josephine were good singers. A highly interesting association copy. Two volumes. Oblong folio. Original blue wrappers with publisher's decorative rectangular printed title label to upper of each volume. Housed in a custom-made full teal blue cloth-covered tray case with mid-tan leather title label gilt to spine. Vol. I: 1f. (recto title, verso blank), 1f. (recto engraved vignette featuring a swan, lake, vegetation, and sunburst, with "Prenumerations Exemplar" printed to head of illustration, verso blank), 1f. (recto contents, verso blank), [1]-44 , 1f. (blank). Vol. II: 1f. (recto title, verso blank), 45-89, [i] (blank) pp. Engraved throughout. Printed on fine quality paper carrying the watermark "LAF." Untrimmed and as issued, each of the 14 songs with its own title. ProvenanceFrom the collection of the singers Henriette and Josephine von Spaun, daughters of Anton von Spaun (1790-1849), who knew Schubert and was part of his circle in Vienna. Both upper inner wrappers with the early signature "Spaun," and both volumes with the decorative bookplate of the sisters, "Henriette und Josephine v. Spaun," laid down to inner corner of title. With the later small owndership handstamp of Mary L. Aufderheide to upper right margin of title. Wrappers somewhat worn, soiled, frayed and chipped, professionally restored at spine and corners. Numerous marginal tears and some more extensive tears professionally repaired; occasional staining. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        History of the Afghans:

London: Printed for the Oriental Translation Committee,, 1829-36. Translated from the Persian of Neamet Ullah … 2 parts quarto bound as one. Original green sand-grained cloth, paper label to the spine. A little rubbed, spine label chipping and slightly scuffed, but largely legible, front hinge just started and the first quire slightly loose as a consequence, endpapers browned, light toning throughout, a very good copy. First edition. Dorn (1805-1881) was a pioneer in many areas of Iranian studies in Russia. "He was particularly interested in the Pashtuns and published annotated editions and translations of texts on tribal history. Dorn never visited Afghanistan, but he nevertheless established the scientific basis for Afghan studies, particularly the first systematic description of Pashto" (Encyclopaedia Iranica). Ni'mat Allah al-Harawi (fl.1613?-1630), called Nimatullah, was a chronicler and waqia-navis, or court reporter, at the court of the Moghul Emperor Jahangir. He compiled the Makhzan-i-Afghani from materials accumulated by Haibat Khan of Samana, and, while some of the content is somewhat fanciful, the book was a major source for the origins of the Pashtuns, also including the genealogies of the Afghan rulers in Bengal and some events contemporary with its composition. For this translation Dorn used a copy from the library of the Royal Asiatic Society "it is very carelessly written, by one Fut'h Khan, for his own use, in the year 1131 of the Hejra (A.D. 1718)" (Preface).

        Poems

Lambeth: Printed (For Private Distribution Only) at the Author's Private Press, 1829 - Small 8vo, contemporary black morocco, skillfully rebacked, gilt decorations and lettering, a.e.g. Frontis portrait after a portrait by R. Reading. Bound in before the portrait is a ten-page manuscript of Monceieff's poem "An Allegory," signed and dated September 20, 1845. ? A collection of about 100 poems in several forms by the playwright, theatre manager, miscellaneous writer and apparently occasional printer, as well. Moncrieff (1794-1857) was a self-described "hack," and a prolific one, who specialized in adapting novels for the stage and who made what little money he could in theatre and literary work of any kind. A few years after this volume was published, Moncrieff began struggling with progressive blindness. Poems contains sonnets, songs, ballads, epigrams and madrigals, mostly on the subject of unrequited love, something at which Moncrieff appears to have had a great deal of experience. ? At the foot of the final page of text is the imprint "W. T. Moncrieff, Typ. Saville House, Lamberth." ? Inscribed at the head of the title-page "To J. Miles Esqr / With the Author's best acknowledgements." The manuscript poems go into length about the aging process and loss of sight and is certainly in part autobiographical. Oblong 4to (17? x 25? cm.), original printed gray wrappers, in marbled boards, gilt-decorated mottled calf spine and corners, giltlettered crimson morocco spine label, device giltstamped on front cover, marbled endpapers. Lithographic title-page with heraldic decoration and eight leaves, each bearing on recto a city view with caption in Swedish and French. Light foxing, but overall crisp and clean.[(?) First Edition. The artist of these small but fine views is identified on the front wrapper as "Fr. Werner" and on the title-page as "F. Werner"; it is pretty certain that Fredrik Emanuel Werner (1780-1832), the Swedish painter and lithographer of mythological and topographical scenes, is the guy. This work seems to be virtually unrecorded, at least outside of Scandinavia where the National Library of Sweden lists one copy identical in collation to this copy. The British Museum Catalogue does list an Utsiger of Stockholm utaf F. Werner of the same date, with color plates but no letterpress. The present lithographs include various views of the city, usually from the water.

First Burma War. Manuscript Letters Concerning the East India Company's Planning for a Medal in Gold and Silver.

East India Company & Royal Mint, London 1829 - East India Company Medal for the First Burma War. Two interesting letters concerning the planning of this medal which give some insight into the relationship between the Company and the Royal Mint. The first letter, which is marked "Copy" top left and dated East India House 12 March 1829, is written by two Directors of the East India Company, William Astell [who had been a Director since 1800] and John Loch [who was to become Deputy Chairman] and is addressed to John Charles Herries [1778-1853, Master of the Mint 1828-30]. It suggests that the Directors wish to have a medal struck for issue to the Native Troops who were engaged in the Burma War. They anticipate needing 765 in gold and 33,264 in silver. The standard reference book suggests that rather smaller numbers [750 & 24,000 were actually issued]. This letter is written in a secretarial hand on a the first side of a bifolium of paper watermarked J Green 1828. The second letter is written in his own hand and signed "Jas W Morrison" to the Master of the Mint on a smaller sheet of folded writing paper dated Mint Office 13 March 1829 and after a discussion of the work being done on an ingot for another client Morrison talks about the copy of the letter from The Company which he is enclosing and pointing out that the usual course is for the request to go through the Secretary of State.         Geografische statistichen Atlas einingen amerikanischen Staaten in 45 Plattern von geografischen Institute en Weimar

Weimar: geografischen Institute en Weimar, 1829. Folio. (21 1/2 x 13 3/4 inches). Mounted on guards throughout. 45 double-page hand-coloured engraved maps, each surrounded by letterpress text, without title as issued. Expertly bound to style in speckled half calf over contemporary marbled paper-covered boards, spine in six compartments with wide semi-raised bands, the band flanked by gilt roll tooling A very rare German composite atlas of America: a complete set including several important early maps of the United States From 1824 to 1829, C. F. Wieland was engaged in creating a series of maps of America for the Geographical Institute of Weimar. According to Phillips, the maps were "published separately," but were occasionally collected and bound as a composite atlas. No general title page was ever issued but these rare composites are now universally known by the title given above. Very few have the same collation, and even fewer have the 45 maps that, according to Phillips, constitute a complete set. The present atlas is exceptional in that it contains this maximum number: by way of comparison, the Library of Congress has an example with thirty maps. The maps are frequently described as copies of Jean-Alexandre Buchon's 1825 French language versions of the maps from Carey & Lea's American Atlas (Philadelphia, 1822). However, as production began as early as 1824, we can assume that the Philadelphia edition was the true inspiration. Like its predecessors, each map is accompanied by detailed text explaining geographical and political aspects of the jurisdiction featured. A large number of the maps are original productions that are distinct improvements on both Carey & Lea's and Buchon's maps. These include the maps of Arkansas Territory, Michigan Territory, Florida, Missouri & Oregon Territories, Canada and the Polar Regions. Several of these have no parallel in the atlases of Carey & Lea or Buchon. Twenty-eight of the maps focus solely on locations within the United States of America. The list of maps in this atlas includes: 1. Vermont, based on Carey & Lea 2. Tennessee, based on Carey & Lea 3. Arkansas Territory, this rare map is one of the first depicting Arkansas alone. Carey & Lea and Buchon had included a map of Arkansas Territory, based on Stephen Long's famous map. However, that map extended north to Canada and west to the Rocky Mountains, while this map focuses exclusively on Arkansas and neighboring Oklahoma. Arkansas is here divided into ten counties. The few existing towns are almost all located along the Arkansas River. 4. North Carolina, based on Carey & Lea 5. Pennsylvania, based on Carey & Lea 6. Ohio, based on Carey & Lea 7. Florida, a rare early map of the State of Florida. It is one of the finest maps in the atlas, and an entirely new map, with the coastline and interior detail for Florida completely redrawn. While Buchon had shown Florida divided into just two counties, this map shows seven. Among the additions is the new city of Jacksonville. Tampa Bay, which was called "Espiritu Santo" by Buchon is here named "Espiritu Santo oder Tampa Bay." The Florida Keys have been entirely redrawn, and there are many new roads in northern Florida. 8. Illinois, based on Carey & Lea, an early map that shows the northern two thirds of the state to be largely uninhabited. 9. New Hampshire, based on Carey & Lea 10. New Jersey, based on Carey & Lea 11. Indiana, based on Carey & Lea, an early map that shows the central and northern parts of the state to be largely uninhabited. 12. Kentucky, based on Carey & Lea 13. New York, based on Carey & Lea 14. Mississippi, based on Carey & Lea, still shows the northern two-thirds of the state to be inhabited by the Choctaw and Chickasaw Indians. 15. Maryland, based on Carey & Lea 16. Michigan & Northwest Territory, an entirely new map, as the corresponding map in the Buchon atlas focused only on Michigan. This map extends westward to include present-day Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota, the "Northwest Territory," a vast and largely uninhabited realm extending to the Mississippi River and up to the Canadian border. The contour of Lake Michigan is more accurately drawn, and ten counties now appear in the lower peninsula of Michigan. Unlike Buchon's, this map shows the upper peninsula attached to the Northwest Territory. 17. Massachusetts, after Carey & Lea, but with different topography 18. Georgia, based on Carey & Lea, showing the northwestern portion of the state still occupied by the Cherokee Indians before their expulsion in 1828 by President Jackson. 19. Maine, based on Carey & Lea, an early map of this state that was admitted into the Union in 1820, is shown with exaggerated boundaries extending north of the St. John River, representing the extreme American claims in the unresolved boundary dispute with Great Britain. 20. Missouri, based on Carey & Lea, an early map that shows the western Ozark portion of the state to still be inhabited by the Osage Indians. 21. Delaware, based on Carey & Lea 22. South Carolina, based on Carey & Lea 23. Rhode Island, based on Carey & Lea 24. Virginia, closely adapted from the corresponding map in Buchon's atlas, shows what later became West Virginia as an integral part of the state. 25. District of Columbia, closely adapted from the map in Buchon's atlas, shows the District as complete, including Alexandria, which was not returned to Virginia until 1839. 26. Missouri and Oregon Territories, a rare early map of the American northwest. The map shows the newly formed territories of Oregon and Missouri, which occupied the watersheds of the Columbia and Missouri Rivers respectively, not in Carey & Lea. 27. British North America, is a general map of Canada, and an entirely different map than those that appeared in the atlases of Carey & Lea and Buchon. While those maps had concentrated on eastern Canada, this example extends all the way to the Pacific, with an abundance of new detail and information for western Canada and the Arctic regions. American territory extends northward so that it includes the entire watershed of the upper Columbia River. 28. The Northern Polar Regions, no map of the subject appeared in Carey & Lea's or Buchon's atlases, this map shows the northernmost regions and the central Arctic Archipelago to be totally unexplored. 29. Alabama, based on Carey & Lea 30. Connecticut, based on Carey & Lea 31. Windward Islands, depicting the chain of islands from Puerto Rico to Grenada, not in Carey & Lea. 32. Leeward Islands, shows the islands off the coast of Venezuela from Aruba to Trinidad, (not in Carey & Lea, who had a different interpretation of the definition of the "Leeward Islands") 33. Chile, shows a country much smaller than the modern Chile, before the settlement of its Patagonian territories and the conquest of its northern provinces, similar to Carey & Lea, but with different topography. 34. Brazil, not in Carey & Lea 35. Colombia, is shown as a unified state embracing Colombia, Equador and Venezuela, similar to Carey & Lea, but with different topography. 36. Cuba & The Bahamas, similar to Carey & Lea, but here with the Cuban provinces outlined. 37. Guatemala, is shown as a unified state embracing all of the central American countries north of Panama, not in Carey & Lea 38. Haiti, is depicted with the entire island of Hispaniola, similar to Carey & Lea, but with different topography. 39. Jamaica, similar to Carey & Lea, but with different topography. 40. Peru, similar to Carey & Lea, but with different topography. 41. Patagonia, an entirely new map, as no map of Patagonia appeared in Carey & Lea's or Buchon's atlases. 42. La Plata, a new map depicts the regions within the basin of the River Plate, not in Carey & Lea 43. United Provinces of South America, map depicts northern Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Bolivia, when they were briefly united into one nation after their collective independence, similar to Carey & Lea, but with different topography. 44. Guyana, not in Carey & Lea 45. Mexico, includes the states of New Mexico and Texas, based on Carey & Lea. Espenhorst A Guide to German Handatlases P1225, 1.6.3; Phillips Atlases 1225; Tooley Dictionary of Mapmakers (1979 ed.) p.658.

WOODBRIDGE'S SCHOOL ATLAS, TO ACCOMPANY THE RUDIMENTS OF GEOGRAPHY

Hartford, 1829. Original printed wrappers, stitched as issued. Wrappers worn at extremities, some light dampstaining to front cover. Several maps loose; lightly foxed. Contemporary hand coloring of all but one map. Near fine. A very nice copy of the atlas meant to accompany Woodbridge's RUDIMENTS OF GEOGRAPHY. First published in 1821, RUDIMENTS was one of the very first American geography textbooks. Woodbridge, a New England educator, taught geography at Thomas H. Gallaudet's American Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb at Hartford from 1817-1820. After spending eight months in Europe, he returned to Hartford in 1821, determined to address the lack of suitable geography textbooks. His work in the instruction of geography was a key contribution to the advancement of the American education system. Quite unusual in such good condition in the original wrappers.
