// Refs.: Hutz, solo ed. ger, p. 111 y ed. Madrid 1855 en p. 213.; Huzard, III, 4389.- // (1) Neue Gebisse und Methode ein Pferd gut zu zäumen; erfunden von dem Spanischen Rittmeister J. Covers rubbed, slight bumping to corners, and paper spine label a little chipped, some browning and spotting, a good copy of a scarce item. First edition. A most informative volume on all aspects of horse racing, including betting. The author is forthright in his opinions. In his thumbnail descriptions of race tracks he comments on Epsom racecourse "Epsom Course can be properly called neither circular, oval, or triangular. It is altogether one of the worst courses in England". Talking about jockeys he comments "The third or Dirty class are remarkable for their slovenly, dirty and unworkmanlike appearance;- it is no uncommon occurrence to see these wretched apologies for Jockeys ride in dirty jackets, dark greasy corduroys, and gaiters of similar complexion". In his chapters on betting the author goes into some depth on the multiplication and division of vulgar fractions. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

SPECIMENS OF AMERICAN POETRY, WITH CRITICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL NOTICES .

Boston: S. G. Goodrich and Co., 1829 - 12mo, three volumes: pp. [i-iii] iv-ix [x-xi] xi-xv [xvi] xvii-xlviii [1] 2-353 [354: blank]; [i-iii] iv-x [1] 2-408; [i-iii] iv-x [1] 2-406, nineteenth-century three-quarter black pebbled morocco and marbled boards, spines and sides tooled in gold, t.e.g., other edges untrimmed. First edition. The first comprehensive anthology of American poetry. It includes poems by 189 American poets, beginning with Cotton Mather and ending with John Greenleaf Whittier. At the end of the third volume is a 28-page "Catalogue of American Poetry" which lists in chronological order "all the poetical works of American origin which have come under notice in the course of this undertaking." "The work was projected by [Samuel Griswold] Goodrich and originally undertaken by a Boston journalist, Frederic S. Hill, and was conceived as a refutation of Sydney Smith and other calumniators of American genius. To make the refutation sufficiently crushing, Kettell went into highways and hedges in search of eligible bards with the result that his collection throws a brilliant light on the state of literary culture in the period covered. The reviewers [e.g. S. A. Eliot, NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW, October 1829] fell foul of its indiscriminate inclusiveness and several editorial shortcomings; Goodrich, in consequence, lost $1,5000 on the venture and felt that insult was added to injury when he discovered that SPECIMENS were commonly referred to as 'Goodrich's Kettle of Poetry.'" - DAB Harris Collection, p. 137. Atlas: pictorial lithographed upper wrapper bound as a title page, by Georges after Smith, 54 fine uncoloured lithographed views after Milbert by Deroy, V. Adam, Villeneuve, and others, all the plates on india paper mounted, 1 hand-coloured double-page lithographed map after H. Toquet. Expertly bound to style in half calf and period marbled paper covered boards, flat spines lettered and decorated in gilt, marbled endpapers Provenance: unidentified French armorial booklabel in the upper left corner of the text volumes; Armida Maria-Theresa and Haris Dunsombe Colt (booklabel) First edition of an outstanding series of American views: a fine set on India Paper and including an uncut large paper set of the text volumes. "Milbert sailed from Havre on the 1st of September, 1815, and arrived in New York on the 20th of the following October. He settled in New York, where his first work was the making of several drawings of the mechanism of steamboats. He soon, however, turned to portrait-painting, and taught drawing. Milbert was later attached to the commission in charge of the leveling preparatory to the establishment of the Champlain Canal. In this connection he made a journey in one of the large steamers plying upon the Hudson. It was on this voyage that he collected much of the material for his Itinéraire Pittoresque. A few years after his arrival in New York he was charged by M. Hyde de Neuville, the French Minister, with the preparation of certain collections of natural history specimens, destined for the King's Garden in Paris. In his report on this collection, which is printed in full in his Itinéraire Pittoresque , he styles himself 'Voyageur, Naturaliste du Gouvernement et Correspondant du Museum d'Histoire Naturelle au Jardin du Roi.' It was through Milbert's efforts that the first living specimen of the American buffalo was introduced into France. On pages 33-6 of the first volume of text is given a very interesting description of the architecture and interior arrangement of the private houses of New York at this period" (Stokes Iconography of New York ) Most of the plates depict scenes in New York State, including New York City, West Point, Albany, Troy, Saratoga Springs and Niagara Falls. This set includes the rare 54th plate that is often lacking, as well as the fine coloured folding map of the northeastern United States. The area covered goes west to Ohio and the Great Lakes, and south to Virginia, with a significant portion of Canada, also included is an inset of the Hudson River region. Fine views are included as well of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. "As an artist, Milbert loved to paint American landscapes, particularly those which showed the Hudson, 'King of Rivers,' flowing majestically through the mountains . boundless curiosity, plus a contagious enthusiasm and a delightful sense of humor, make the journal as lively a document today as when it was penned a hundred and forty years ago. The pictures of what he saw, as of the time he drew them, constitute a unique and valuable record" (Sherman).         Dressing for the house on the March 1829

Thomas McLean, 26 Haymarket, London, England 1829 - Hand colored entching. Satirical print in acid free Mylar envelope. See British Museum number 1868,0808.8927. Title: Dressing for the house on the March 1829. John Singleton Copley, 1st Baron Lyndhurst stands in his dressing room in his shirt-sleeves, black breeches, black waistcoat and stockings and wearing his Chancellor's wig). He puts one hand into the arm-hole of a old coat which a footman in livery holds out, saying, "Your Lordship's Coat is become very threadbare for you know you turned it only last year - & it has been turned before that: so I much doubt if it will bear turning any more - Can't you afford to buy a new one now her Ladyship earns her own Expenses? - Doodle pays all her bills and gives her every thing she can wish for.' Lyndhurst: 'Alas! she'll get no more out of Doodle! he has quite kicked her off - She is just now gone to Cumberland to try after a service there which perhaps may enable me to keep still sitting on Wool, if I can but turn this Coat once more & look decent.' On a settee (right) are the mace, Purse of the Great Seal, and the Chancellor's gown. The satirist is pointing out that Lyndhurst is an opportunist and political turncoat and that, further, he is quite comfortable with the knowledge that his wife is having sexual liaisons with other men. He manged to remain Chancellor under Canning, Goderich and Wellington, which was quite a feat considering their different views and positions. His wife was no better. She granted her favors to the ultra rich Lord Dudley and then to the Duke of Cumberland, while sticking to her husband and partner and helping him advance his political career. March 24 1829. Print made by: William Heath. Published by: Thomas McLean. Dimensions: Height: 275 mm. Width: 370 mm. Lettered with title, artist's signature [Paul Pry], text within image and publication line: "Pub March 24 1829 by T. McLean 26 Haymarket." Description and comment from M. Dorothy George, 'Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires in the British Museum', XI, 1954). Lyndhurst, reputed a careerist and previously a 'Protestant', was Chancellor under Canning, Goderich, and Wellington. 'Doodle' is Lord Dudley, see 'Journals of H. E. Fox', p. 235 ; Creevey's 'Life and Times', ed. Gore, pp. 252, 363 ; Greville writes (1830) of Lady Lyndhurst: "Detesting her husband as a husband she sticks to him closely as a partner and labours for his aggrandisement and interests with abundant zeal and success." 'Memoirs', 1938, ii. 91 ; for Cumberland and Lady L. see ibid. i. 306 ff. (Aug. 1829). More Bibliography BM Satires 15705

The [Picture] Alphabet [title on lid].

      - London: Edward Wallis, Skinner Street, [c. 1829]. 30 circular wooden playing discs (63 mm. diameter), 24 with printed letters on one face; the obverse with 24 hand-coloured lithographic images and six remaining discs with letters (alphabets and sections of the alphabet) on both faces; five discs with splits, one repaired, due to tension of the wood when drying out, a few minor abrasures and a little spotted; housed in the original treen cylinder (80mm diam. 180mm h.) in two sections unscrewing in the middle surmounted by a screw lid with printed label on yellow within circular bands of black and red lines; lid rubbed; bottom inscribed in ink A New Years Gift for little Eliza Bruce. from her Aunt Emily. January 1st 1830, one word from label cut out and replaced with the word Aunty in direct ink lettering on wood. A rare alphabet game with unusually large pictorial and alphabetic disks. Issued by one of the leading Regency game manufacturers, the delightful images range from Ark, Boy, Cow to Xury (the slave Robinson Crusoe helped to escape), Yew and Zebra. What had started as a single-sheet ABC primer in the 16th century became an educational toy in the late 18th. 'The underlying concept was the use of simple pictures to reinforce the phonic impact of initial letters. As with the ABC primer, the idea migrated from the classroom to the nursery and the hearth. It became recognised as an "improving" toy' (Rickards, The Encyclopaedia of Ephemera, p. 2). Usually these games are not dated; however, we can for once give this example a rough date from the presentation inscription.

The Life of Philip Melancthon. Prepared for the American Sunday School Union

Philadelphia: American Sunday School Union, (1829) - 12mo, original black quarter sheep, marbled paper sides, gilt lettering. ? An anonymous life of scholar and theologian Philipp Melancthon (1497-1560), issued as one of the many publications of the American Sunday School Union. On the front paste-down in a contemporary hand is written "Hermitage S. School / No 205 / Built & Endowed / by / Gen. Jackson." On the front free endpaper in apparently the same hand is the following notation: "This book was / bought & given by Gen. / And: Jackson to / the S. S. endowed & / built by him at his / plantation 11 miles / from Nashville / Tenn / F. Webber / Nashville, Tenn / June 22/62." ? In 1823 Andrew Jackson donated the property and funds for the building of a church near his middle Tennessee plantation, The Hermitage, which was at first called the Ephesus Church, but was later changed to the Hermitage Church in Jackson's honor. The Hermitage Church thrived, as did the Hermitage Plantation, until after Jackson's death when his son, Andrew, Jr., began selling off Hermitage property and buildings to pay for unsuccessful business ventures. By 1858 the Jacksons had abandoned the Hermitage, and during the Civil War services at the Hermitage Church ceased all together. ? Mr. Webber's statement that this book was bought and personally given by Andrew Jackson to the Hermitage Church Sunday School cannot be authenticated, but Webber did own other similar American Sunday School Union imprints from the Hermitage Sunday School library (we had one ten years ago), in which he wrote almost identical notations and dated June 22, 1862. There is little doubt that this book is a rare survival from the Sunday School on Jackson's famous plantation. On the title-page Webber has inscribed the book to his daughter, "Rachel E. Webber / from / Her Father." Binding rubbed; text somewhat browned; lacking the final blank and free endpaper; a good, sound copy. Not found in American Imprints, but OCLC records eight copies [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Novum testamentum polyglottum Bagsterianum.

Londini: Samuelis Bagster 4to (29 cm, 11.4"). 75, [3] pp., 188 cols. in 4, 22 cols., 188 cols. in 4, [8] pp., 568 cols.. 1829 First edition of Bagster's impressive New Testament, "the most inclusive since the London Polyglot" according to Darlow and Moule. This hefty volume offers the text in Greek, Latin, Portuguese, and English on facing pages, followed by French, Italian, Spanish and German likewise, and then by Syriac in a separate section printed from right to left. This was the => first published portion of the Biblia Polyglotta, Bagster's great accomplishment, published from 1829 through 1831; the Hebrew text here is W. Greenfield's, the Greek is the Textus Receptus, the Latin is the Sixtine–Clementine, the English is the King James, the German (printed in blackletter) is Luther's, the French is Ostervald's, the Italian is Diodati's, the Spanish is Scio's, and the Syriac N.T. is from the Vienne, 1555 edition. Samuel Lee wrote the Prolegomena, which in this particular example are bound in after the (incorrectly placed) first eight pages of the French/Italian/Spanish/German section. Bagster first attempted to publish a part of his massive feat in 1822, but virtually all of that edition (in four languages only) was destroyed in a warehouse fire. Publisher's dark green ribbed cloth, covers framed in blind with large, elegant blind-stamped floriate devices in the corners; spine with gilt-stamped title and list of languages, this rebacked preserving the majority of the original spine and lettering, corners refurbished. Lower page edges (closed), title-page, and final page each with an old institutional rubber-stamp, title-page and one sectional title pressure-stamped, first preface page with inked numeral in lower margin, no other markings. Two leaves each with short tear from upper inner margin, not touching text; a scattering of very light spots in first and final sections, central portion with more consistent but still extremely faint spotting in lower margins; overall a strong, clean, attractive volume.

The Hobart Town Almanack for the Year 1830. With Embellishments

Hobart Town: James Ross, 1829. Some wear of the spine panel, expertly repaired, remnant of original paper label, internally excellent.. 24mo, [viii], , 272 pp., engraved and lettepress titles, with a total of 11 engraved plates (including title page), original cloth. Rare and desirable early Tasmanian almanac here in its second year of issue, featuring eleven plates by the accomplished convict artist Thomas Bock and a descriptive itinerary of travel around Van Diemen's Land. Of particular interest are the final three pages of this volume, comprising regulations for Swan River settlers embarking from Hobart. The regulations are captioned 'For the guidance of those who may propose to embark as settlers, for the new Settlement, on the Western Coast of New Holland' and were issued by the Colonial Office in January 1829. They provide an excellent insight into preliminary arrangements for the colony, especially early land grants. We learn that the government wished to incur no expense for the transport of settlers or their upkeep, although the Lieutenant-Governor will grant land proportionately at a ratio of 40 acres for every £3 invested. The significant exception to this rule being settlers who bring labourers to the Swan River colony (including women and children over ten years of age) are entitled to further land grants. Full title will not be granted until land was cleared and improved, with uncleared ground incurring an annual fiscal penalty and ultimately reverting to the Crown. The second last provision stresses 'It is not intended that any convicts, or other description of prisoners, be transported to this new settlement' - ironic given that convict labour was deemed essential to the economy and transportation continued to West Australia long after its closure in Van Diemen's Land. The eleven plates were engraved by Thomas Bock (the good majority being signed "T. Bock") and are after originals by Frankland, Dalrymple, and Lemprière. Bock is widely recognised as one of the better convict artists of Van Diemen's Land: 'As a result of his work for James Ross, the proprietor of the Hobart Town Alamanck, Bock's skill as an engraver was further recognised. Most of the illustrations for the 1829, 1830, and 1835 almanacks were engraved by him and some also drawn by him. These plates… are competently engraved with finely-incised detail' (Hackforth-Jones The Convict Artists p.20).
