The Hobart Town Almanack for the Year 1830. With Embellishments

Hobart Town: James Ross, 1829. Some wear of the spine panel, expertly repaired, remnant of original paper label, internally excellent.. 24mo, [viii], , 272 pp., engraved and lettepress titles, with a total of 11 engraved plates (including title page), original cloth. Rare and desirable early Tasmanian almanac here in its second year of issue, featuring eleven plates by the accomplished convict artist Thomas Bock and a descriptive itinerary of travel around Van Diemen's Land. Of particular interest are the final three pages of this volume, comprising regulations for Swan River settlers embarking from Hobart. The regulations are captioned 'For the guidance of those who may propose to embark as settlers, for the new Settlement, on the Western Coast of New Holland' and were issued by the Colonial Office in January 1829. They provide an excellent insight into preliminary arrangements for the colony, especially early land grants. We learn that the government wished to incur no expense for the transport of settlers or their upkeep, although the Lieutenant-Governor will grant land proportionately at a ratio of 40 acres for every £3 invested. The significant exception to this rule being settlers who bring labourers to the Swan River colony (including women and children over ten years of age) are entitled to further land grants. Full title will not be granted until land was cleared and improved, with uncleared ground incurring an annual fiscal penalty and ultimately reverting to the Crown. The second last provision stresses 'It is not intended that any convicts, or other description of prisoners, be transported to this new settlement' - ironic given that convict labour was deemed essential to the economy and transportation continued to West Australia long after its closure in Van Diemen's Land. The eleven plates were engraved by Thomas Bock (the good majority being signed "T. Bock") and are after originals by Frankland, Dalrymple, and Lemprière. Bock is widely recognised as one of the better convict artists of Van Diemen's Land: 'As a result of his work for James Ross, the proprietor of the Hobart Town Alamanck, Bock's skill as an engraver was further recognised. Most of the illustrations for the 1829, 1830, and 1835 almanacks were engraved by him and some also drawn by him. These plates… are competently engraved with finely-incised detail' (Hackforth-Jones The Convict Artists p.20).

Both upper inner wrappers with the early signature "Spaun," and both volumes with the decorative bookplate of the sisters, "Henriette und Josephine v. Spaun," laid down to inner corner of title. With the later small owndership handstamp of Mary L. Aufderheide to upper right margin of title. Wrappers somewhat worn, soiled, frayed and chipped, professionally restored at spine and corners. Numerous marginal tears and some more extensive tears professionally repaired; occasional staining. . The rare and elusive First Edition, first issue of both volumes. Deutsch 957 1-13, 965A. Hoboken 14, 685-686. Hirsch IV, 659. "The seven poems each by Rellstab and Heine that make up the posthumously titled Schwanengesang were probably intended for separate publication. From the rippling demisemiquavers of Liebesbotschat to the languid triplets of Ständcher, from the ebullience of Abschied to the sprawling gloom of In der Ferne, the emotional range of the Rellstab settings is staggering. Five of the seven Heine poems are deeply tragic, and with a remakable economy Schubert plumbs the essence of images such as Ihr Bild and Der Doppelgänger. Even if we assume that Schwanengesang was begun earlier, the sheer quantity and quality of productivity in Schubert's last months point to a man who has by sheer force of will resolved not to acknowledge his failing body. But it could just as easily describe a man who knows that his time is almost up – or a man who, in his creative prime and, having survived worse bouts of illness, had no expectation of dying. Whatever the explanation, his productivity remains nothing short of miraculous." Robert Winter et al in Grove Music Online. "Among the women who sang Schubert's compositions simply and naturally, I must mention most particularly Fräulein Henriette von Spaun..." Leopold von Sonnleithner, Vienna, November 1, 1857, in Deutsch: Memoirs of Schubert by his Friend, p. 117. According to Deutsch, p. 213, both Henriette and Josephine were good singers. A highly interesting association copy.

        UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Philadelphia: Published by Henry S. Tanner, 1829. Rebacked on linen, expertly conserved by the Green Dragon Bindery. Silk lining edges. Lightly and evenly toned. A very nice copy. In a modern half morocco portfolio, stamped in gilt. The first edition of Tanner's spectacular and very beautiful large-scale map from "the Golden Age of American Mapmaking." The 1829 first edition of this map is described by Rumsey as "one of the best early large maps of the United States and the premier map for its period" (Rumsey 975). The map shows the United States from the Atlantic ocean to what today is western Kansas (noted as "Kanzas" on map). To the west of Michigan Territory and Missouri large areas of land include the locations of numerous Indian tribes but are designated as "Districts" rather than Territories: District of Huron, Sioux District, Mandan District, Osage District and Ozark District. Also included are canals, railroads, "McAdamized" roads and proposed canals and railroads. One of the most attractive and interesting aspects of the map are the numerous insets: these include sixteen inset city and regional maps (Environs of Albany; Environs of Boston; Environs of New York; Environs of Philadelphia and Trenton; Environs of Baltimore and Washington; Cincinnati; Charleston; New Orleans; South Part of Florida; Washington; Baltimore; Philadelphia; New York; Boston; Pittsburgh & Environs; Oregon and Mandan Districts [8 x 13 inches, with a further inset 'Outlet of Oregon River']) the border of the main map also includes fourteen profiles of portages, canals, and railroads and two tables in the lower right corner: Statistics of the Western Districts, and Statistics of the United States. According to Tooley, H.S. Tanner is "thought to be the first native-born American to devote his career to publishing," and he is responsible for some of the most important maps of the United States to be published in the 19th century.

"Chevreul's immediate task at Gobelins was to work on the improvement of color intensity and fastness in wools. He had been selected for this position because he was an outstanding chemist; and his initial studies were on the chemical aspects of dyes and dyeing, attempting to place the art of dyeing on a more rational basis than the complicated and empirical procedures then employed. He embarked upon a thorough study of the natural properties of natural dyes and between 1838 and 1864 published several important papers in the Mémoires de l'Académie des Sciences, reviewing the chemistry and technology of dyeing. These papers and 'Leçons de chimie appliqué à la teinture' (1829-1830) rendered an important service to the dye industry during the years prior to the advent of synthetic dyestuffs" (DSB).         SPECIMENS OF AMERICAN POETRY, WITH CRITICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL NOTICES ...

Boston: S. G. Goodrich and Co.,. 1829. nineteenth-century three-quarter black pebbled morocco and marbled boards, spines and sides tooled in gold, t.e.g., other edges untrimmed.. A fine copy. (#137385). First edition. The first comprehensive anthology of American poetry. It includes poems by 189 American poets, beginning with Cotton Mather and ending with John Greenleaf Whittier. At the end of the third volume is a 28-page "Catalogue of American Poetry" which lists in chronological order "all the poetical works of American origin which have come under notice in the course of this undertaking." "The work was projected by [Samuel Griswold] Goodrich and originally undertaken by a Boston journalist, Frederic S. Hill, and was conceived as a refutation of Sydney Smith and other calumniators of American genius. To make the refutation sufficiently crushing, Kettell went into highways and hedges in search of eligible bards with the result that his collection throws a brilliant light on the state of literary culture in the period covered. The reviewers [e.g. S. A. Eliot, NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW, October 1829] fell foul of its indiscriminate inclusiveness and several editorial shortcomings; Goodrich, in consequence, lost $1,5000 on the venture and felt that insult was added to injury when he discovered that SPECIMENS were commonly referred to as 'Goodrich's Kettle of Poetry.'" - DAB Harris Collection, p. 137.         (KLERCKER, GÖRAN af)

Handbok i lust-fyrverkeriet för artillerister och konstälskare. Af G. af K. Kristianstad, F. F. Cedergréens boktryckeri, 1829. 8:o. (4),201,(1) s. & 3 utvikbara litograferade plr.

        MISSISSIPPI KITE

London, 1829. Near fine condition. Audubon's depiction of the Mississippi Kite appeared in 1829 as plate 117 in THE BIRDS OF AMERICA. This plate aroused considerable debate at the time, because many natural historians were quick to note the similarity between the lower of the two birds shown and the rendering of the same species in Alexander Wilson's AMERICAN ORNITHOLOGY, issued in 1809. Audubon was detested by Wilson's loyalists in the Philadelphia scientific establishment of the day. Lead by George Ord, who had completed Wilson's work after his death, they felt that Audubon over-romanticized his work and had no scientific ability. They seized on this obvious cribbing from Wilson as another example of Audubon's perfidy. Indeed, it is difficult to understand why Audubon found it necessary to lift a bird portrait from Wilson, so vastly his inferior as an artist. The other kite shown provides a magnificent contrast, demonstrating how extraordinary Audubon's talents were.

Schwanengesang. In Musik gesetzt für eine Singstimme mit Begleitung des Pianoforte. Letztes Werk. Ite [-IIte] Abtheilung. No. 5370. Preis f3._C.M. f. 2._. f.2_.

Tobias Haslinger Musikverleger, im Hause der ersten österr: Sparkasse am Graben No. 572. Pfoehl sc. [PNs T.H. 5371-5384] [1829], Wien - The rare and elusive First Edition, first issue of both volumes. "Among the women who sang Schubert's compositions simply and naturally, I must mention most particularly Fräulein Henriette von Spaun." Leopold von Sonnleithner, Vienna, November 1, 1857, in Deutsch: Memoirs of Schubert by his Friend, p. 117. According to Deutsch, p. 213, both Henriette and Josephine were good singers. A highly interesting association copy. Two volumes. Oblong folio. Original blue wrappers with publisher's decorative rectangular printed title label to upper of each volume. Housed in a custom-made full teal blue cloth-covered tray case with mid-tan leather title label gilt to spine. Vol. I: 1f. (recto title, verso blank), 1f. (recto engraved vignette featuring a swan, lake, vegetation, and sunburst, with "Prenumerations Exemplar" printed to head of illustration, verso blank), 1f. (recto contents, verso blank), [1]-44 , 1f. (blank). Vol. II: 1f. (recto title, verso blank), 45-89, [i] (blank) pp. Engraved throughout. Printed on fine quality paper carrying the watermark "LAF." Untrimmed and as issued, each of the 14 songs with its own title. ProvenanceFrom the collection of the singers Henriette and Josephine von Spaun, daughters of Anton von Spaun (1790-1849), who knew Schubert and was part of his circle in Vienna. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        History of the Afghans:

London: Printed for the Oriental Translation Committee,, 1829-36. Translated from the Persian of Neamet Ullah … 2 parts quarto bound as one. Original green sand-grained cloth, paper label to the spine. A little rubbed, spine label chipping and slightly scuffed, but largely legible, front hinge just started and the first quire slightly loose as a consequence, endpapers browned, light toning throughout, a very good copy. First edition. Dorn (1805-1881) was a pioneer in many areas of Iranian studies in Russia. "He was particularly interested in the Pashtuns and published annotated editions and translations of texts on tribal history. Dorn never visited Afghanistan, but he nevertheless established the scientific basis for Afghan studies, particularly the first systematic description of Pashto" (Encyclopaedia Iranica). Ni'mat Allah al-Harawi (fl.1613?-1630), called Nimatullah, was a chronicler and waqia-navis, or court reporter, at the court of the Moghul Emperor Jahangir. He compiled the Makhzan-i-Afghani from materials accumulated by Haibat Khan of Samana, and, while some of the content is somewhat fanciful, the book was a major source for the origins of the Pashtuns, also including the genealogies of the Afghan rulers in Bengal and some events contemporary with its composition. For this translation Dorn used a copy from the library of the Royal Asiatic Society "it is very carelessly written, by one Fut'h Khan, for his own use, in the year 1131 of the Hejra (A.D. 1718)" (Preface).

        Poems

Lambeth: Printed (For Private Distribution Only) at the Author's Private Press, 1829 - Small 8vo, contemporary black morocco, skillfully rebacked, gilt decorations and lettering, a.e.g. Frontis portrait after a portrait by R. Reading. Bound in before the portrait is a ten-page manuscript of Monceieff's poem "An Allegory," signed and dated September 20, 1845. ? A collection of about 100 poems in several forms by the playwright, theatre manager, miscellaneous writer and apparently occasional printer, as well. Moncrieff (1794-1857) was a self-described "hack," and a prolific one, who specialized in adapting novels for the stage and who made what little money he could in theatre and literary work of any kind. A few years after this volume was published, Moncrieff began struggling with progressive blindness. Poems contains sonnets, songs, ballads, epigrams and madrigals, mostly on the subject of unrequited love, something at which Moncrieff appears to have had a great deal of experience. ? At the foot of the final page of text is the imprint "W. T. Moncrieff, Typ. Saville House, Lamberth." ? Inscribed at the head of the title-page "To J. Miles Esqr / With the Author's best acknowledgements." The manuscript poems go into length about the aging process and loss of sight and is certainly in part autobiographical.
