Esemplare genuino e ben conservato.

        MISSISSIPPI KITE

London. 1829.. Double elephant folio print, framed. Near fine condition. Audubon's depiction of the Mississippi Kite appeared in 1829 as plate 117 in THE BIRDS OF AMERICA. This plate aroused considerable debate at the time, because many natural historians were quick to note the similarity between the lower of the two birds shown and the rendering of the same species in Alexander Wilson's AMERICAN ORNITHOLOGY, issued in 1809. Audubon was detested by Wilson's loyalists in the Philadelphia scientific establishment of the day. Lead by George Ord, who had completed Wilson's work after his death, they felt that Audubon over- romanticized his work and had no scientific ability. They seized on this obvious cribbing from Wilson as another example of Audubon's perfidy. Indeed, it is difficult to understand why Audubon found it necessary to lift a bird portrait from Wilson, so vastly his inferior as an artist. The other kite shown provides a magnificent contrast, demonstrating how extraordinary Audubon's talents were.

        WAVERLEY NOVELS: Volumes I - 48

Edinburgh: Cadell & Co.,. 1829-1833. 48 volumes, issued once a month beginning June 1829, each introduced by the author, and revised and extensively annotated by him. First editions thus. Scott's "magnum opus"--his own final, authorized versions of each work herein. In the original red cloth bindings with paper labels printed in black. 12mo (small volumes, measuring approximately 4 1/2 by 7 1/4). Each volume with an engraved frontispiece and title vignette. A few spine labels mildly chipped, some foxing to first and last few leaves, and tissue guards missing here and there. Remarkably, thirteen of the volumes are nearly fine, with the spines still retaining the original red color, but the rest are faded to tan, resulting in a slightly "uneven" appearance. Still, a nice set, especially in the original bindings.

London: Rowland Hunter. VG+/NONE. 1829. 1st Edition Thus. Hardcover; 1st Printing. 51, 41, 52, 60. This book was issued in 1827 in a shorter form with fewer plates. There is an errata sheet (additional corrigenda) plus a small, additional errata sheet tipped in behind the first. There are comparisons of the Hebrew, Sanskrit, Druid and Latin alphabets. 324 pages including Appendix and Index, and including an explanation of the vignettes. There are some small, light foxing spots on some pages but they're not obtrusive aside from pages 68-69, which have a small area of the inner, upper portion of each page darkened from a 1929 news clipping laid in about King Kalakaua's Masonic membership scroll being found in Oakland, CA. There is also laid in a small piece of paper (lovely handwriting) talking about Druids and Welsh legends, a 1870 note about this book on the back of a Grover's 'soft shoes for tender feet' ad, and an 1866 bookseller's (Mr. Benton) note to George Gibson, whose name is inscribed on a front end page, agreeing to sell him this book for $20, as seen in Mr. Benton's cataogue No. 20. A few preliminary pages are unopened at the top. The book is bound in the original dark green cloth with a paper label on the spine. There are some very small areas of bubbling to the cloth, some edge wear to the binding mostly at spine ends, some small areas of paper only slits at gutters (not affecting binding integrity), and some wear to the edges of and fading to the spine label, though still quite legible. Clean, tightly bound, complete, and in solid very good plus condition. ; Drawings, Plates & Maps; 11-1/2" x 9-1/4"; 324 pages .

Storia naturale.

A Classic in the History of Geometry. Bruxelles: M. Hayez, 1837. First edition.

"The <i>Apercu Historique</i> was inspired by the question posed by the Royal Academy of Brussels in 1829: a philosophical examination of the different methods in modern geometry, particularly the method of reciprocal polars. Chasles submitted a memoir on the principles of duality and homography. He argued that the principle of duality, like that of homography, is based on the general theory of transformations of figures, particularly transformations in which the cross ratio is preserved, of which the reciprocal polar transformation is an example. The work was crowned in 1830, and the Academy ordered it published. Chasles requested permission to expand the historical introduction and to add a series of mathematical and historical notes, giving the result of recent researches. His books and almost all of his many memoirs are elaborations of points originally discussed in these notes." (DSB). <br/><br/> In 'A History of Geometrical Methods' Coolidge writes: "The greatest contribution which Chasles made to projective geometry, and it certainly was great, was in the study of the cross ration, whether of collinear points or of concurrent lines, or yet of coaxel planes. We this in Notes IX and X of [his Apercu]. He discussed the six cross ratios of four elements of one of these forms, and this gives him a deeper insight into the meaning of an involution. In Note XV we find the theorem, which was later to play a vital role in the work of Steiner, that four points of a conic determine with any fifth point of that curve four lines having the same cross ration. ... Another fundamental idea developed by Chasles was homography, or the general linear transformation in the plane or in space. Here a point corresponds to a point, and points of a plane or line to points of a plane or line. Central projection and homology discussed by Poncelet are special cases of this. He added the invariance of cross ratios as part of his definition, not realizing that this invariance could be proved, ... I think we should give him credit for being the first to give a proper definition of these important transformations".. The two works published as volume XI of the 'Mémoires couronnés par l'académie royale des sciences et belles-lettres de Bruxelles'. 4to (278 x 210 mm), contemporary calf, some light fosing toi titel pages, otherwise fine, pp [4],572;573-851 [1]

BuchananÕs greatest literary achievement of his later years was his Rerum Scoticarum Historia, initially published in 1582, in which he related the history of Scotland from its origin till the death of the regent Lennox in 1571. .... the underlying object of the book is the inculcation of those principles of political and religious liberty of which Buchanan had been the consistent champion throughout his career. By the leading scholars of Europe it was adjudged to be a work of transcendent merit, and even in the eighteenth century it was seriously debated whether Caesar, Livy, or Sallust had been his model. In this History, which for fully two centuries kept its place as a standard authority, Buchanan had appealed both to scholars and protestant theologians... [Cambridge History of English & American Literature]. While the work was extremely popular, and remained in print almost continuously well into the 19th C., this was one of the more ambitious editions, extending the History until the 'present' day. .
