Uniform 19th century half calf, gilt ornamented spines with blue gilt lettered label. A fine complete copy of the second and most complete edition of this beautiful lepidopterological classic complete with the supplements. 'With Esper a real scholar arrives on the scene, and while so far we have seen a constant rise in the artistic quality of illustration, we are now aware for the first time of the so-called scientific approach, which did so much damage to Europe's culture in the nineteenth century. Esper did not hesitate to show one wing of inherently beautiful butterflies as seen from above, and the other one as seen from below' (Pfeiffer). Still, even Pfeiffer admits that this method offered new possibilities of comparative evaluation to the scholar, and Esper cannot be denied a strong artistic gift, which was greatly helped by the Nuremberg engraver Johann Carl Bock (fl. 1757-1806). During a stay in the Low Countries Bock was encouraged even more by artists of the school of Maria Sibylla Merian, who had formely worked in Nuremberg" (Nissen, Bestiaries pp. 71-72)./Its fine plates are exceptionally delicately handcoloured and engraved by Bock, Sturm, Tyroff, Volkart, Walbert, a.o. after Esper's own drawings. Eugen Johann Christoph Esper (1742-1810) was a German entomologist and phycologist, professor at Erlangen and director of the Natural History Museum. His other major works are 'Icones Fucorum' published from 1797-1808 and 'Die Pflanzthiere' published from 1788-1830.//Horn & Schenkling 6085; Nissen ZBI, 1316.

Iconographie et Histoire Naturelle des Coléoptères d'Europe.

Paris, Méquignon-Marvis, 1829-1836 (-1838). 5 volumes. 8vo (222 x 140mm). pp. xiv, 400; 407; 326; 486; 415, (i), with 270 beautifully handcoloured engraved plates. Contemporary uniform half green morocco, richly gilt empire style spines. A fine uniformly bound set of this beautifully illustrated French classic on European beetles. The first two volumes in their original issue of 1829-1830. The stock of the first 2 volumes was destroyed by fire and both volumes were reprinted in 1837. The last volume 5, which is mostly lacking was written by Ch. Aubé and must have been issued in a small number. P.F. Dejean was called 'the first great coleopterist'. Together with Boisduval, who was his private curator, he published the above work on European coleoptera. "The great name in coleopterology during the early nineteenth century was P.F.M.A. Dejean (1780-1845), with a career quite exceptional among entomologists; a general who rose to the title "pair de France" and served as Napoleon's first aide-de-champ in the battle of Waterloo. Dejean was an ardent collector and eventually in part by purchase, brought together the largest private insect collection of his time. He lost no opportunity to fetch rare specimens, which is amply evident from what was told about his somewhat unmilitary behaviour during raging war" (R.F. Smith a.o. History of Entomology pp. 125-6). Dejean added insects to his collection from the fields of Waterloo. His collection numbered 22,399 species in 1837. W. Junk in his 'Bibliographia Coleopterologica' Berlin 1912 item 789 offers a copy of this rare work at Reichsmark 100, which makes it one of the most expensive works in the catalogue. Some occasional light foxing.//Provenance: Bookplate of J. Nègre.//Nissen ZBI, 1062; Horn-Schenkling 4602.

NARRATIVE AND SUCCESSFUL RESULT OF A VOYAGE IN THE SOUTH SEAS, PERFORMED BY ORDER OF THE GOVERNMENT OF BRITISH INDIA, TO ASCERTAIN THE ACTUAL FATE OF LA PEROUSE'S EXPEDITION

London. 1829.. Two volumes. lxxviii,302pp. plus errata; [2],436pp. plus three plates (two folding, one colored), and folding map of Mannicolo. Octavo. Modern three- quarter gilt morocco and cloth by Aquarius, spines gilt, t.e.g. A few minor fox marks, mostly on preliminary leaves of first volume. Lacks half title in first volume. Overall a very good copy. Forty years after the disappearance of La Perouse, Dillon, a sandalwood trader, was shown a sword hilt in the Solomon Islands which raised his suspicions about the fate of La Perouse. He organized an expedition in Bengal and sailed back via Tasmania, New Zealand, and Tonga. He was able to assemble enough evidence from natives, both in testimony and artifacts, to determine where La Perouse had grounded. One of the ship's relics, a glass piece from a thermometer, became a native's nose piece (depicted on a folding plate). Along the way Dillon was involved in a terrific legal row with the government of Tasmania, also reported in detail. He provides a scathing examination of the legal system of Tasmania and New South Wales, finally declaring Australia "a land of corruption and injustice." For his efforts, France made Dillon a chevalier of the Legion of Honor, his expenses were defrayed, and he was granted a decent pension. HILL, p.83-84. FERGUSON 1336. ABBEY 598. HOCKEN, p.44. Map Of The State Of Maine With The Province Of New Brunswick

1829 - Steel engraving. Original wash color, refreshed; expertly conserved, re-mounted on new linen; a few cracks & marginal mends but fine for this kind. The very rare (three copies cited in OCLC), first edition of this excellent map of Maine by the state¿s first mapmaker. An exceptionally well-preserved example. Unlike many early American state maps that struggled to get completed, Greenleaf¿s received a warm commendation from the state legislature even before it was published, and the mapmaker was granted $1000 to aid him in finishing the map. Greenleaf later received $640 from the legislature for 40 copies of the map that were obtained for state use, a remarkable $16 per copy. Perhaps the large number of copies sold for official rather than private use helps account for the map¿s present rarity. The map was originally intended to accompany an atlas and survey of the state that Greenleaf published the same year, but very few complete sets of the three items are known to have survived. Greenleaf appears to have taken special care in the production of this map. Although published in Portland, Maine, Greenleaf employed as engravers for this work the estimable J. H. Young and F. Dankworth, both of whom produced major works for the firms of S. A. Mitchell and others. This precisely detailed map, which shows ten counties in different colors, provides state, county, town and township boundary lines. The state¿s many rivers, lakes, ponds, and even falls are shown as are roads and elevations. The map was re-published in 1844 by Greenleaf¿s son and namesake from the same plates but with emendations, and several times thereafter. Greenleaf published two earlier maps of the state in 1815 and 1820, but the present work was by far his finest. Ristow, W. American Maps and Mapmakers, pp. 95-96; Catalogue Raisonne Important Maine Maps,¿ (Auction Catalogue for Thompson Collection Auction, Robert E. Croul, 2003) lot 119.

Physiognomik. Zur Beförderung der Menschenkenntniß und Menschenliebe. Vervollständigte neue Auflage der verkürzt herausgegebenen physiognomischen Fragmente. (Im Einverständnisse mit dem Verleger). 4 Bde.,

Wien, J. P. Sollinger 1829. - Vgl. Graesse IV, 126; Goed. IV/1, 263 u. Adeligen (u.a. Newton, Goethe, Friedrich II, Herder, Mendelssohn u.

A CHRONICLE OF THE CONQUEST OF GRANADA. FROM THE MSS. OF FRAY ANTONIO AGAPIDA

London: John Murray, 1829.. Two volumes. Full contemporary calf, preserving the half-title in the first volume (none called for in second). Spines quite browned and worn, with large chip from crown of second, scattered foxing (occasionally moderate), otherwise a very good set. First British edition, succeeding the American edition, but publishing a variant text. Inscribed by Irving: "To Christopher Hughes Esq from his friend Washington Irving London, Nov. 19 - 1829," on the half-title to the first volume, and inscribed again on the title-page of the second volume. The recipient, at the time of the inscription, was charge d'affaires under J.Q. Adams to the court of the Netherlands, and in the course of his diplomatic service, was much in the circle of expatriate American diplomats and artists which Irving frequented during his European sojourn. Throughout his diplomatic service, "he won for himself at all his posts a unique place in the inner circle of social and diplomatic life" - DNB. Early Irving presentation copies, particularly those as meaningful as the present, are scarce. BAL 10126.

NARRATIVE AND SUCCESSFUL RESULT OF A VOYAGE IN THE SOUTH SEAS, PERFORMED BY ORDER OF THE GOVERNMENT OF BRITISH INDIA, TO ASCERTAIN THE ACTUAL FATE OF LA PEROUSE'S EXPEDITION.

London. 1829. - Two volumes. lxxviii,302pp. plus errata; [2],436pp. plus three plates (two folding, one colored), and folding map of Mannicolo.
