        Histoire Naturelle des Poissons.

Paris, F.G. Levrault, 1828-1849. 22 volumes. 4to (254 x 210mm). With 657 (70 plain) beautifully handcoloured engraved plates. Later blue cloth, gilt lettered spines. The very rare large paper issue of the most important iconography on fishes published in the 19th century. The work is very reasonably priced as the text and plates are partly seriously affected by foxing. The plates of volumes 19 and 20 are not coloured. The work is usually found in 8vo with either plain or coloured plates. The work is important as it gives the correct Linnaean nomenclature of many fishes from Cook's voyages. "Cuvier and his assistant, Achille Valenciennes, did not actually see the voyage drawings; instead, they were to be plentifully supplied with tracings and sketched copies by a remarkable traveller, writer and artist called Sarah Bowdich. Together with her husband Thomas Bowdich, she had spent three-and-a-half years in Paris where they became close friends of Cuvier... The Bowdich copies of fish drawn by Georg Forster and other artists are in pencil on now-faded scraps of paper, and include a number of New Zealand species. They are bound in with the original Cuvier manuscript from which emerged the enormous 'Histoire naturelle des Poissons' (1824-49) in which some further fish from the Cook voyages were properly described and named..." (Andrews, The Southern Ark p. 57). "Nearly all that was known about fishes during the first half of the nineteenth century was summarized by Georges Cuvier and his pupil and successor, Achille Valenciennes, in the monumental 'Histoire Naturelle des Poissons'. ... (It) contains descriptions of 4,514 nominal species, the greater portion, approximately two-thirds, written by Valenciennes after the death of Cuvier in 1832. To-day the work of Cuvier and Valenciennes is indispensable to systematic ichthyology ... In many parts of the world people assisted Cuvier with notes, manuscripts, and particularly specimens. For many years the Jardin des Plantes was the center where all ichthyological materials were deposited. Thus, Cuvier was able to bring together the richest and largest contemporary collection of fishes. Althogether, his vast communication network, huge world-wide collections, and extensive ichthyological library, made Paris the center of ichthyology and Cuvier the foremost ichthyologist in the world" (T.W. Pietsch in 'Archives of Nat. Hist, 12, 1'). The plates belong to the very best ever made, no ichthyological work equals the delicacy of colouring and precision of engraving. Nissen. Schöne Fischbücher, 46; B.M.(Nat. Hist.)I, 411.

Picturesque Views of The English Cities, from Drawings by G. F. Robson, Edited by J. Britton. Containing Thirty-two Engravings by Adlard, Barrenger, Barber, Higham, Le Keux, Jeavons, Varrall, Tombleson, Redaway, Taylor, Woolnorth etc.

London: J. Britton, 1828.. First edition. Printed title with ornamental border, an engraved Architectural & Heraldic title page and 31 engraved city views as called for. Folio, (13 1/4 x 10 inches), contemporary full green grained morocco, the sides elaborately blocked in gilt within gilt rules, the spine ornamentally blocked and lettered in gilt, all edges gilt. The binding rubbed on the joints and headbands but still a fine and most attractive binding. The free endpapers have been adhered to the front pastedowns, perhaps to reinforce the inner hinges, but these now have some rippling. A remarkably clean copy. Some foxing to the Architectural title and occasional very light marginal foxing but overall very clean and with good strong impressions of the plates. Short marginal tear to one plate. Overall an exceptional copy. With tipped-in at end the prospectus for this work listing the plates. The city views comprise: Canterbury (2), York (2), Bath, Bristol, Carlisle, Chichester, Chester, Coventry, Durham (2), Ely, Exeter, Gloucester, Hereford, Lincoln (2), London (2), Lichfield, Norwich (2), Oxford, Peterborough, Rochester, Salisbury, Wells, Westminster, Winchester, & Worcester. The edition was strictly limited to 1,000 impressions and the original plates were destroyed in January 1829 after that number had been printed; this copy with its strong crisp engravings would have been an early impression.

The Siege of Carlaverock in the XXVIII Edward I. A.D.MCCC; With the Arms of the Earls, Barons, and Knights, who were Present on the Occasion; with a Translation, a History of the Castle, and Memoirs of the Personages Commemorated by the Poet

London: J. B. Nichols and Son. 1828. First Edition. Hardcover. Full calf rebacked and recornered with five raised bands on spine, gilt titles in second compartment and the other compartments with blind tooled decoration, boards with gilt fillet border and blind tooled decoration, aeg, marbled endpapers with bookplate on front pastedown, tissue guarded coloured frontis, title page printed in red and black, text illustrated with the arms of the nobles present at the siege and these nicely hand coloured, internally clean and bright. The poem "Siege of Carlaverock" is the only contemporary record of the seige of that castle in July 1300. This account is thought to have been written by the Fransiscan, Walter of Exeter and is noteworthy for several reasons. Perhaps firstly because it provides contemporary desciptions of the appearance and equipment of a late 13th century army and the manner in which they set about besieging a castle. It also contains the accurate blazon of over 100 peers of the realm, here reproduced in colour. The book presents a history of the castle itself, followed by the poem, the original text with the translation on the facing page, with the last section made up of short biographies of the worthies mentioned in the poem. Carlaverock castle is a triangular moated castle in south west Scotland. The siege of the castle in 1300 eventually ended, when having held up the might of the English army for some considerable time, the garrison of just sixty men finally surrendered. , Folio , xxxii + 380 pp .

A Pilgrimage in Europe and America, leading to the Discovery of the Sources of the Mississippi and Bloody River; with a description of the Whole Course of the Former, and of the Ohio. [Two volumes].

xxiii, 472 pp.; 545 pp. 8vo. Three quarter dark brown morocco over marbled boards, five raised bands decorated in gilt, black morocco lettering pieces, gilt volume numerals. First English edition. Illus. with engraved frontis, 3 plates, 2 folding plans, and large folding map of the Mississippi. Sabin 4605. Field 111. Pilling: Proof Sheets, 340. Eberstadt 107-20. Howes B338. Wagner-Camp 26a: 2. Clark II: 182. Monaghan: French Travellers 178B. Larned 1591. Hubach 59. Giacomo Costantino Beltrami was a naturalist and explorer who left Italy for Europe after a period of political persecution, then journeyed to America where he traveled from Pittsburgh down the Ohio and up the Mississippi to Ft. Anthony; then to Canada, down the Red River, across to the Missouri and down the Mississippi to New Orleans. For a while he had joined up with an expedition led by Major Stephen Long in 1823 but left to travel again on his own after relations with Long soured. Vol. II. is "almost entirely devoted to the author?s travels among the North-western Indians, of whom he gives some novel particulars. The narrations of what he witnessed are tinged with the peculiar glow of the author?s temperament. Beltrami must have moved in a gigantic world, if he saw external objects through the same media with which he viewed his own person and accomplishments, " Field, Indian Bibliography, p. 28. The work was not well received. Nearly invisible repair to front hinge, else a very good set, extremities worn, scattered foxing; tear at inner margin to first few leaves, offsetting on title, folding map remounted, creased, trimmed to exclude the left side neat line but without loss to map, mainly marginal repairs to two tears on verso of one plan.

Vues de Stockholm et de ses Environs. Dessinées d´aprés Nature et Lithographiées par J. F. O.

Imp. de J. P. Gjöthström / Tryckt af Gjöthström. [Ca. 1828] 42 x 29,5 cm. Wrapper + 4 lithographs. Brown wrapper with printed title at the front. This is the corrected second state of the wrapper with two "e" in Lithographiées. The first state has only one "e". A crease across the wrapper, otherwise as new.. A charming and romantic work by the swedish crown prince Oscar (crowned Oscar I in 1844). The prince had real artistic talent and was quite interested in the lithographic technique. The plates depict the royal castle Rosersberg and its environs. They are: "Rosersberg", "Vue de la ruine", "Vue du Temple" and "Vue de la Grotte". The plates are signed JFO in the stone. The name "Rosersberg" is printed at the back of the wrapper. According to the Royal Library and Wieselgren the work should contain two additional plates depicting the royal castle Haga. These two plates have an entierly different charchter and no wrapper is known. Instead of JFO, they are signed Oscar in the stone. A second part with these plates might have been planned, but never finnished. No definitive evidence exists that these two plates indeed belongs to the present work, eventhough it is likely. Very rare

SELECT VIEWS OF GLASGOW AND ITS ENVIRONS

Published by Joseph Swan Glasgow: Published by Joseph Swan, 1828. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. 276 x 216 mm (10 7/8 x 8 1/2"). 4 p.l., xvi, [1] (fly title), 91, [1] pp. FIRST EDITION. Handsome 19th century polished calf, covers with elaborate ruled and floral roll frame in gilt and blind, raised bands decorated with four gilt rules terminating in an arabesque at either end, gilt compartments formed by thick, thin, and dotted rules, tan morocco title label, turn-ins tooled in blind, all edges gilt. WITH 33 ENGRAVED SCENIC PLATES PRINTED ON INDIA PAPER AND MOUNTED, the engravings done by Joseph Swan after drawings by J. Feming and J. Knox. Original tissue guards (one missing).Very thin crack along top three inches of front joint (the joints otherwise not seriously worn), one large and two small abrasions to lower cover, but the original decorative binding solid, especially lustrous, and altogether pleasing. A hint of foxing (only) to some plates (two plates a bit more foxed), endpapers and first few leaves at front and back with faint discoloration at corners (apparently from glue), otherwise A FINE COPY INTERNALLY--fresh, bright, and clean throughout, and with first-rate impressions of the engravings. This book differs from other travel books of the day in its exclusive focus on a city--and not an exotic foreign city, but one known more for its industry than its scenery. Indeed, it would be difficult to name another work in this genre with views featuring smokestacks as well as cathedrals. However, at the time the present book was printed, Glasgow was known as the "Second City of the British Empire" for its important contributions to the economy, and was proud to be a city of what was then understood to be progress. The scenes here, by the capable engraver Joseph Swan (1796-1872), do not depict depressing views of dark satanic mills, but reveal a bustling modern city, where goods are constantly being produced, bought, sold, and shipped. Many of the engravings show citizens hard at work in various capacities, while others show them enjoying the leisure their prosperity affords. The "environs" of the title take us to the surrounding countryside, where the roofs, steeples, and smokestacks of the city on the River Clyde can be admired from a hillside advantage. Swan and John Leighton (fl.1828-40) collaborated on several scenic books about Scotland, with the others concentrating on the natural beauties of lakes and rivers.

        Six Quartiers de Paris

1828. first edition. Extremely Rare MonnierMONNIER, Henri. Six Quartiers de Paris. Paris: [François Séraphin] Delpech, 1828. A rare suite of six hand colored lithographed plates, (without the hand colored lithographed title) otherwise complete as issued. Oblong quarto. Plate size: 11 x 14 1/8 inches (279 x 370 mm). Bound to contemporary style in full dark green morocco. Gilt ruled borders. Gilt panel. Gilt lettering and ornaments to spine. Restoration to lower corner of plate four, otherwise a fin e copy.According to the ABPC Index, since 1923 only three copies have come to auction (1938, 1949, 1979). There are only three copies in institutional holdings worldwide. The plates:1. Le Marais2. Quartier St. Denis3. Quartier de la Bourse4. Chaussée d'Antin5. Faubourg St. Honoré6. Le Faubourg St. GermainFor reasons unknown, Ray identifies this suite as being by Eugene Lami, despite the plates clearly identified as by Monnier; the only copy to come to auction in the last thirty-five years is also identified Lami as the artist. Melcher, however, correctly identifies the suite as Monnier's, as does Marie (Marie, Aristide. Henri Monnier 1799-1877. Paris, 1931) and Champfleury. Curiously, the only copy in institutional holdings, that in the Morgan Library, belonged to Ray but though the note is under Lami's authorship the Responsibility detail in OCLC/RILN clearly states: "par Monnier.""Between 1825 and 1827 Monnier passed much of his time in London…On his return to Paris he embarked on a series of albums in which he recorded the manners and humors of the city with unprecedented profusion. Between 1826 and 1830 he satisfied the insatiable demand for his designs with almost 500 lithographs, nearly all of which were drawn with a pen and colored by hand. For each design he himself colored a master print and carefully supervised its subsequent preparation" (Ray, p. 199).François Séraphin Delpech was a French lithographer, mainly of portraits and costumes after his contemporaries.  His portrait lithographs are in the collection of Britain's National Portrait Gallery and the Louvre. He also lithographed the work of others, as here.Marie pp. 296-302. Melcher, The Life and Times of Henri Monnier, p. 211.

Currier and Ives?Husking?Eastman Johnson, New York: 1860Hand-colored lithograph37? x 44? framedThe publishing firm of Currier & Ives created the most popular and highly regarded lithographs of quintessentially American scenes ever produced. The quality, vast scope and engagingly populist style of their works have made their names synonymous with an idealistic vision of 19th-century American promise and optimism.Nathaniel Currier began his lithographic career as an apprentice in 1828. By the mid-1830?s he had established his own firm on Spruce Street in New York City. In 1857 James Ives became a partner in the flourishing business, which went on to produce over 7,000 lithographs by 1907.Currier & Ives was undoubtedly the most prolific firm of lithographers in America, its output greater than that of all the other firms combined. The remarkable scope of this production was matched by the company?s ability to anticipate popular themes and subject matter. Among their many works are lithographs depicting sporting, railroad and rural scenes, marine, and western views, as well as foreign and domestic city views, historical tableaux, and a wide range of sentimental, morally instructive and advertising images.Currier & Ives? broad productivity was accompanied by consistently high standards of printing and hand-coloring, and their ability to draw on original works by many of the finest American genre painters of the times, including (among many others) Fanny Palmer, Louis Maurer, Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, Charles H. Parsons and George Durrie.

Slightly worn and foxed internally; light staining to margins of first few leaves; occasional fingering in pencil. . First Edition. Fog p. 110. Kuhlau is considered, together with C.E.F. Weyse, as the foremost representative of the late Classical and early Romantic periods in Denmark. Elverhöi (The Elf Hill), incidental music to Heiberg's Romantic national play Elverhøj, was first performed in Copenhagen on November 6, 1828 at the King's Theatre. "Still more Romantic in character [than Kuhlau's music to C.J. Boye's Romantic play William Shakespeare] is his music to Elverhøj, Kuhlau's most successful work and the most often performed play in the Danish repertory. It is largely based on old Danish and Swedish folktunes skilfully arranged to fit the dramatic situations, above all the tune Kong Christian stod ved højen mast (‘King Christian [IV] stood by the lofty mast’), which became the Danish national anthem."
