The Pedlar and his Pack or the Desperate Effort, an Over Balance

[Philadelphia 1828 - Etched with aquatinting. Excellent condition. Image size: 9 5/8 x 14 1/4 inches. Rare American political caricature from the famous 1828 race This is an interesting cartoon satirizing the paradoxical effect that negative attacks on Andrew Jackson were having in the famous campaign of 1828. An editor-publisher in Philadelphia named John Binns had published several harsh hand-outs called "coffin hand bills" that accused Jackson of arbitrary executions of American militia volunteers under his command and Native American prisoners, as well as violent episodes from Jackson's personal history. All this, though hardly altogether false, had the effect of increasing Jackson's popularity. It isn't clear whether the hand bills failed because they exaggerated Jackson's excesses or because an important portion of the population approved of the implied excesses, probably the latter. It was, of course, an all male electorate and fighting Indians was a recent if not immediate experience for much of white America. The cartoon shows Binns being crushed by the weight of the coffins, Henry Clay and John Quincy Adams, the other leading candidates, hanging on. Adams is holding the Presidential chair, soon to be lost to the military hero. Not in Murrell, A History of American Graphic Humor ; Reilly, American Political Prints 1828 - 3; Weitenkampf, page 21.

1828 Bushrod Washington Autograph Letter Signed

1828 - In December of 1828, Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, Bushrod Washington (1762-1829), wrote from Mount Vernon to provide an update on a $1,600.00 bank transfer, an enormous sum for the time. The concise letter reads: "Dear Sir, In consequence of your obligging [sic] letter of the 6th inst. I now send you a check on the Offici [sic] Bank of Virginia at Norfolk for sixteen hundred dollars to be placed to my credit in the Branch bank of the U. S. at Washington and am very respectfully Dear Sir Yo. Mo. Ob. Serv. Bush. Washington" The letter is written on a single sheet measuring 7" x 8". ".ashington 1828" is inscribed on the verso in a different hand. Accompanied by an etching of the Justice. Bushrod Washington was Associate Justice from 1798-1829. As George Washington's favorite nephew, he inherited Mount Vernon in 1799 upon the former president's death. An uneven upper edge indicates the page was torn from a larger sheet; there is a very small repaired tear to the left edge at the "6th", where there are also two small chips of paper loss, and a small repaired separation at the right edge of the center fold. Generally very good. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Disquisitiones generales circa superficies curvas.Göttingen: Dieterich, 1828.

First edition, the very rare offprint from the library of Haskell F. Norman, of the founding paper of modern geometry containing the seed for Riemann's work on non-Euclidean geometry. A "masterpiece of the mathematical literature" (Zeidler, p. 16). "... the crowning contribution of the period, and his last great breakthrough in a major new direction of mathematical research, was <i>Disquisitiones generales circa superficies curvas</i> (1828), which grew out of his geodesic meditations of three decades and was the seed of more than a century of work on differential geometry" (DSB). "A decisive influence on the entire course of development of differential geometry was exerted by the publication of [the present] paper of Gauss... It was this paper, carefully polished and containing a wealth of new ideas, that gave this area of geometry more or less its present form and opened a large circle of new and important problems whose development provided work for geometers for many decades" (Kolmogorov & Yushkevitch, p. 7). Gauss's <i>Disquisitiones</i> was, in particular, the basis for Riemann's famous 1854 Habilitationsschrift 'Uber die Hypothesen welche die Geometrie zu Grunde liegen' (see below).<br/><br/> "The surface theory of Gauss was strongly influenced by Gauss' work as a surveyor. Under great physical pains, Gauss worked from 1821 to 1825 as a land surveyor in the kingdom of Hannover... In 1822 he submitted his prize memoir 'General solution of the problem of mapping parts of a given surface onto another surface in such a way that image and pre-image become similar in their smallest parts' to the Royal Society of Sciences in Copenhagen... When writing his prize memoir, Gauss had apparently already worked on a more general surface theory, because he added the following Latin saying to his title page: <i>Ab his via sterniture ad maiora</i> (From here the path to something more important is prepared). The development of the general surface theory, however, was difficult, though the basic ideas were known to Gauss since 1816. On February 19, 1826, he wrote to Olbers: 'I hardly know any period in my life, where I earned so little real gain for truly exhausting work, as during this winter. I found many, many beautiful things, but my work on other things has been unsuccessful for months.' Finally on October 8, 1827 Gauss presented the general surface theory. The title of the paper was 'Disquisitiones generales circa superficies curvas' (Investigations about curved surfaces). The most important result of this masterpiece in the mathematical literature is the <i>Theorema egregium</i>" (Zeidler, p. 15). <br/><br/> The <i>Theorema egregium</i> shows that a certain measure of how curved a surface is (now called its Gaussian curvature) is 'intrinsic,' i.e. can be determined by measurements made only on the surface and without reference to the ambient three-dimensional space. "Gauss' <i>Theorema egregium</i> had an enormous impact on the development of modern differential geometry and modern physics culminating in the principle 'force equals curvature'. This principle is basic for both Einstein's theory of general relativity on gravitation and the Standard Model in elementary particle physics" (Zeidler, p. 16). Gauss also shows that certain other features of a surface, such as its geodesic lines (the shortest paths), are intrinsic. <br/><br/> A second major result contained in the present paper, which perhaps had even greater ramifications in mathematics than the <i>Theorema egregium</i>, is a version of what is now known as the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. Gauss showed that the total Gaussian curvature of the interior of a triangle on a surface with geodesic sides is the amount by which the sum of the angles of the triangle exceeds its Euclidean value <i>Ï€</i> This result was generalized by Pierre-Ossian Bonnet in 1848 and by many later mathematicians, and served as the prototype of results linking the local geometry of a space (e.g. its curvature) with its 'topology' (its overall shape), a theme which pervades much of 20th century mathematics. Remarkably, Gauss describes at the end of the present work some measurements he has made to verify the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. He tells us that he has measured the angles of a triangle, the greatest side of which was more than 15 miles, and found that the sum of the angles of the triangle is greater than two right-angles by almost 15 seconds of arc, in agreement with the theorem as it applies to the surface of the Earth.<br/><br/> The discovery that some important geometrical properties of a surface are intrinsic suggested that a surface should be treated as a space with its own geometry; this is the idea that was taken up and generalized to higher dimensions by Riemann in his Habilitationsschrift. "In his approach to differential geometry, Riemann used ideas from Carl Friedrich Gauss's theory of surfaces, but liberated them from the restriction of being embedded in (three-dimensional) Euclidean space. He started from a determination of the length of a line element as a positive-definite quadratic differential form to derive further notions depending on metrics, in particular that of the geodesic line. Moreover, he introduced the sectional curvature of an infinitely small surface element, derived from the Gaussian curvature of the associated finite surface inside the manifold, which is generated by all geodesic lines starting in the surface element" (<i>Companion Encyclopedia</i>, p. 928).<br/><br/> Norman 880 (this copy). I. Grattan-Guinness (ed.), <i>Companion Encyclopedia of the History and Philosophy of the Mathematical Sciences</i>, 1994; A. N. Kolmogorov & A. P. Yushkevitch, <i>Mathematics of the 19th century: Geometry. Analytic Function Theory</i>, 1996; E. Zeidler, <i>Quantum Field theory III. Gauge Theory</i>, 2013, pp. 15-19. For a detailed account of the content and historical antecedents of the work, see P. Dombrowski, <i>'150 years after Gauss' 'Disquisitiones generales circa superficies curvas'</i>,' Astérisque 62 (1979), pp. 97-153.. 4to (214 x 258 mm), pp 50, bound uncut with the original brown plain wrappers in nineteenth-century cloth-backed marbled boards (book plate of H.F. Norman to front paste-down), inner hinges cracked, A1 and A2 with old paper repair to lower outer corner (probably a paper flaw since A3 has such but smaller), very light dmap stain to inner lower corner, laste two leaves with similar paper flaw as A3, outer margins of the original wrappers with old paper repairs

Autograph Letter Signed to Hankey Esq., Banker

Lake Macquarie: 29 May, 1828. Single sheet of laid paper, 29.5 x 36.5 cm, watermarked "Gilling & Allford 1821", folded to letter size; an excellent letter written in neat holograph manuscript and signed "L.E. Threlkeld", stamped "Ship-Letter Plymouth", traces of red wax seal. Six months allowance for the Aboriginal Mission. Attractive hand-written letter by the important missionary and linguist Lancelot Edward Threlkeld, regarding the outfitting of his Aboriginal Mission at Lake Macquarie. Threlkeld, one of the best regarded of the early missionaries, had spent his early life in the London theatre, before becoming an itinerant preacher. He joined the London Missionary Society and in 1816 sailed with his family to the South Seas, working with John Williams at Raiatea. He arrived in Sydney in 1824, where his proposal to establish an Aboriginal mission was supported by Governor Brisbane. The mission was established the following year at "Reid&#39;s Mistake" on Lake Macquarie with a 10,000-acre parcel of land. The excessive expenditure of the mission incurred the wrath of the Reverend Samuel Marsden who successfully sought Threlkeld&#39;s dismissal and the abandonment of the mission in 1828, the same year that this letter was written. In the letter, sent to Banker for the London Mission Society Hankey, Threlkeld details his having drawn a very large bill on the important Sydney trader Charles Appleton. Appleton was a Hobart businessman who opened his Sydney store in 1825: one of his early partners was David Jones, although their partnership was dissolved by mutual consent in 1838. Here, Threlkeld writes: &#39;I beg to advise you of having drawn a set of bills of this date in favour of Mr Charles Appleton or his Order for 125£ Sterling for Value received being one six months advance for the Aboriginal Mission from the 21st of August 1828 to Oct. 21st 1828 which bills you will please to honor and place to the accounts of the Mission on the new arrangement.&#39; This was a large sum, and the letter was written at the height of Threlkeld&#39;s conflict with the Reverend Samuel Marsden over expenditure. Although he couldn&#39;t have known, Threlkeld had already been dismissed by his superiors in London, who abandoned the mission and revoked his position in April 1828, one month before this was written. A docket-note to the letter comments that it was &#39;Read to Western Com[mittee] 6 April 1829&#39;. Threlkeld nonetheless, was able to secure a grant of land from Governor Darling, returning to Lake Macquarie in 1829, where he continued his ground-breaking studies of the aboriginal languages of the region. This is a particularly intriguing document from the turning point of Threlkeld&#39;s career.

Only very few copies exist of each of the editions, all of them are rare, which means that this book was very popular and much used.         Nachricht über das Kollegium von St. Katharina in Parma.

Bellinzona 1828.. 4° (25.3 x 18 cm). 3 ungeheftete Faltbogen (=12 SS.) Bütten-Schreibpapier, davon 9 1/2 Seiten hs. (etc.; grazie a http://www.marialuigia.eu/storia.asp ). Residenz in Bellenz aufgehoben". August 1856; dito in Schwyzer Zeitung).

Weyse, as the foremost representative of the late Classical and early Romantic periods in Denmark. &#11;&#11;Elverhöi (The Elf Hill), incidental music to Heiberg&#39;s Romantic national play Elverhøj, was first performed in Copenhagen on November 6, 1828 at the King&#39;s Theatre. &#11;&#11;"Still more Romantic in character [than Kuhlau&#39;s music to C.J. Boye&#39;s Romantic play William Shakespeare] is his music to Elverhøj, Kuhlau&#39;s most successful work and the most often performed play in the Danish repertory. It is largely based on old Danish and Swedish folktunes skilfully arranged to fit the dramatic situations, above all the tune Kong Christian stod ved højen mast (&#145;King Christian [IV] stood by the lofty mast&#146;), which became the Danish national anthem."       1828. Radierung, 1828, auf festem Velin. 23,5:28,7 cm. Insgesamt stockfleckig, rechte obere Ecke fehlt. Literatur: Nagler 4; Andresen/Heller 1; Boetticher 5 (Orig.-Lithographien u. Radierungen)..

Bogota: No publisher/printer], 1828. Removed from a bound volume and irregular along the left margin; without the integral blank. Eight wormholes in text but not costing any letters. Now housed in a quarter red morocco clamshell box, round spine, raised bands with gilt accenting. A good++ copy.. Folio (29.2 cm; 11.5"). [1] p. In August of 1828 Bolivar was 45 years old, weary, and would be dead in two years. He had freed or helped free much of South America from Spain, served as president of Bolivia (12 August 1825 &#150; 29 December 1825) and Peru (8 February 1824 &#150; 28 January 1827), and was president of federation of Gran Colombia (17 December 1819 &#150; 4 May 1830). He believed in democracy and republicanism and in that summer of 1828 was frustrated that the Constitutional Convention he had called expecting it to write a strong centralist document that would satisfy the demands of the emerging separatist and extremely regional sentiments of the Venezuelans and others had failed. Because of the Convention's collapse, via this document, dated 27 August, Bolivar declared himself dictator rather than president. In doing so he pledge to his people that he obligated himself "to strictly obey your legitimate wants: I will protect your sacred religion as the faith of all Colombians and the code of all good men; I will make justice the first law of all transactions and the universal guarantee of our citizens."The promise of liberty is strangely addressed: "I will not say anything to you about liberty because if I fulfill my promises you will be more than free &#151; you will be respected."Searches of WorldCat, COPAC, CCILA, Catálogo Colectivo del Patrimonio Bibliográfico, the OPACs of the Bibliotecas Nacionales de Colombia and Venezuela locate one copy in the U.S. and possibly three in the BNC and probably none in the BNV.

Memoirs of the Life and Travels of John Ledyard

London: Henry Colburn, 1828. Octavo, untrimmed; a very good copy in later period-style speckled quarter calf. London edition. The scarce London edition of this great American biography of Ledyard, who sailed on Cook&#39;s third voyage and was the author of one of the rarest surreptitious accounts. It was this edition that was glowingly reviewed in the Quarterly Review for July 1828, where Ledyard was described as &#39;an extraordinary man&#39; and a &#39;citizen of the world.&#39; This London edition seems to be the scarcest of the three early editions: the others being Boston (1828) and Cambridge (1829).

Report of the select committe on anatomy

London, 1828. <p>Parliament. House of Commons. Report from the select committee on anatomy. Folio. 150pp. [London:] House of Commons, 22 July 1828. 331 x 212 mm. 19th century boards, rebacked and recornered in calf, light edgewear. Very good copy. Old medical library stamp on title and first page.</p><p>First Edition of this highly interesting and entertaining report on the British body-snatching crisis. Since the mid-eighteenth century, obtaining cadavers for teaching purposes had been regulated in Britain by the Murder Act of 1752, which stipulated that only the corpses of executed criminals could be used for dissection. By the beginning of the nineteenth century, however, improvements in medical science, coupled with a substantial drop in the number of executions, caused the demand for cadavers to far outstrip the legal supply. This situation was ripe for exploitation by "resurrection men," criminals who robbed the graves of the newly deceased and sold their corpses to teachers of anatomy, who of necessity turned a blind eye to the illegality of these transactions. Some grave-robbers even resorted to murder, including the infamous William Burke, who in December 1828 was arrested in Edinburgh for the murders of over a dozen victims whose corpses he and his partner Hare sold to an anatomical demonstrator connected to Edinburgh University.</p><p>In the first half of 1828, in response to increasing calls for reform, the British Parliament appointed a committee to "enquire into the manner of obtaining subjects for dissection by schools of Anatomy and the State of law affecting persons employed in obtaining and dissecting bodies." During the course of its investigation, the committee heard testimony from a wide range of witnesses, from eminent medical men to procurers of bodies for medical schools (these last identified only by initials). The medical men included Sir Astley Cooper, Benjamin Collins Brodie, John Abernethy, William Lawrence, Herbert Mayo, Granville Sharp Pattison (who himself was indicted for body-snatching at the age of 23), Thomas Southwood Smith, Henry Halford, John Webster and Benjamin Harrison, the treasurer of Guy&#39;s Hospital. The witness list can be found on page 13 of the committee&#39;s report. The testimony of these men, reproduced in full in the report, is followed by several appendices, including tables of paupers&#39; deaths broken down by parish; the committee was proposing legislation that would allow the state to seize unclaimed corpses from workhouses and sell them to surgical schools. The committee&#39;s efforts were successful: In 1832 Parliament passed the Anatomy Act, granting licenses to teachers of anatomy and giving physicians, surgeons and medical students legal access to corpses unclaimed after death.
