THE SPORTSMAN'S DIRECTORY; OR PARK AND GAMEKEEPER'S COMPANION

Printed for Baldwin and Cradock et al., London 1828 - 191 x 121 mm (7 1/2 x 4 3/4"). vii, (1), 214 pp., [1] leaf. Fifth Edition. Appealing mid-19th century black straight-grain half morocco over marbled paper boards, raised bands, gilt spine titling, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Woodcut tailpiece, seven illustrations in the text, and one engraved plate. Title page with ink ownership signature, of John Sadlier Moody. Westwood & Satchell, p. 149-50; Albee, p. 109 (citing the 1845 edition). Upper corners slightly bumped, title page obviously browned from facing frontispiece, light offsetting and isolated trivial foxing in the text, but an excellent copy, the binding without significant wear, and the leaves almost entirely quite fresh and clean. Himself a gamekeeper, John Mayer envisages other professional gamekeepers as his primary audience, reminding them "not [to] forget the sandwich-case, and flask of brandy, to hand to the gentlemen, when their nerves get a little affected." The work covers the capture of badgers, bats, foxes, stags, pike, rats, and many more creatures, and details dozens of recipes for physicking hunting dogs. Although our title page informs us that we are looking at a fifth edition, all of the early printings are very rare, both in institutional settings and on the market; ABPC lists just two copies of this book (both from our edition) at auction since 1975.       . Radierung mit Plattenton, auf Velin. 11,5:13,5 cm. Literatur: Stoll 48. - Vorzüglicher Abdruck mit breitem Rand an drei Seiten, oben ca. 1,5 cm. Hermann (1828-1901), Kunsthistoriker; Rudolf (1830-1889), Regierungsrat; Auguste (geb.

Tables in illustration of the theory of definite proportionals; shewing the prime equivalent numbers of the elementary substances and the volume and weights in which they combine

London: John Murray, 1828 Original cloth-backed boards, spine label; overall in superb condition. From the libraries of the Essex Institute, Francis Peabody Library, and Arnold Thackray, with both bookplates present. First edition and considered ?"very scarce and not in the usual chemical bibliographies?" (Neville). Noted as a significant book in the development of the theory of chemical combination, in which the combining weights of the known elements are presented in tabular form. It is also important because it gave an experimental basis to Dalton?'s atomic theory and brought the use of equivalent weights into practice. Brande (1788-1866), apprenticed as an apothecary, studied medicine, but his main interest was chemistry. He succeeded Sir Humphry Davy to the chair of chemistry at the Royal Institution, and was director of their laboratory and mineralogical collection. At the Royal Institution, Brande devoted himself to chemical investigation, lectures, and writing, as well as editing the Quarterly Journal of Science and Art, where he was assisted by Michael Faraday. ?"Never a major researcher in the sense of Davy or Faraday, he was an effective lecturer and writer of several important textbooks, all of which went through several additions?" (ODNB, II, pp. 1124-1126).

In 1814 Kempt commanded a brigade which was intended to attack the vital American post of Sackets Harbor. Kempt was Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia 1820-1828 and Governor General of British North America 1828-1830. Kempt himself was universally liked and respected, being a man, Joseph Howe noted approvingly, who "had a passion for road making and pretty women." One of his aides-de-camp later recalled that "society, by the force of his example, was the most agreeable thing imaginable," but he was "perfectly astonished" by Kempt's abilities as a colonial administrator.

Lowber's Map of the Hudson River

New York:: Wm. A. Mercein, No. 240 Pearl-Street,. Ca. 1828.. This map dates from the period between 1828 and 1835, based on the name Dr. David Hosack, which appears in the list "Mansion Houses between Lower Red-Hook and Hyde Park". Hosack bought Hyde Park in 1828 and it was sold in 1835 at his death. The text below the list states, "Hyde Park is one of the most pleasant villages on this river. It received its name from Dr. Bard's seat, now the residence of Dr. Hosack in this vicinity". Dr. Hosack taught at the medical school at Columbia University, and later left to establish the first medical school in New Jersey, at Rutgers. There is also a reference in the text to Sing Sing as the "new State Prison lately erected here"; Sing Sing was built in 1826. The entire text column on the right, pertaining to the east bank of the Hudson, is dominated by the lists of mansion houses and their owners, starting with houses between Greenbush and Castleton, and ending with the list of owners of mansions between Yonkers and Fort Washington. "West Point . The United States Military Academy was established here 1802, and is supported by the general Government There are at present 209 cadets at this place, under the superintendance of Lieut. Col. Thayer." Thayer served as superintendent at West Point from 1817 to 1833 when he resigned due to a disagreement with President Andrew Jackson. Tall map of the Hudson River and adjacent countryside, from the city of Albany in the north to Jersey City and City of New York in the south, with text in single column to left and right of the map. Important sites are listed in the text, including descriptions of cities, and villages, with an emphasis on "Mansion Houses". Laid down on heavier stock, with three original horizontal and one vertical fold. Very slight loss at intersection of horizontal with vertical fold, mostly in places not illustrated (the white spaces) 12 1/4 x 19 1/4" with margins. Possibly from a Hudson River guide, but there is no reference to this in OCLC. OCLC records editions for 1828 (OCLC: 45116808, 'An Improved Map of the Hudson River') & 1850 (OCLC: 793033811, 'Lowber's map of Hudson River').

Broadside. Begins: Proclama. Simon Bolivar libertador presidente de Colombia & & &. A los pueblos del sur. Ciudadanos y soldados!

Bogot?: No publisher/printer Folio (31.3 cm; 12.25"). [1] p.. 1828 The Liberator" condemns the actions — the "limitless perfidy" — of the government of Peru and announces the beginning of the first international war on South American soil. This pitted Peru against Gran Colombia and was an attempted land grab by Peru, wanting to wrench Bolivia from orbit of Gran Colombia. Greatly displeased with Peru's invasion of the nation named after him, in which he had been the first president, and which was guarded by forces from the Colombia of which he was presently president, Bolivar in this proclamation of 3 July mobilized his army.Coincidentally, and unknown to him, also on 3 July, Peru officially declared war on Gran Colombia.=> Searches of NUC, WorldCat, CCILA, and COPAC fail to locate any copies. Tattered at the edges with tears and small pieces of paper missing; old repairs on the verso where a fold tear and another exist; small stains to upper margin, with light age-toning and a very little foxing. Housed in a quarter red morocco clamshell case. Very good.

Op. 100]. Elverhöi Skuespil i fem Acter. [Piano-vocal score].

C.C. Lose [1828], København - First Edition. Fog p. 110. Kuhlau is considered, together with C.E.F. Weyse, as the foremost representative of the late Classical and early Romantic periods in Denmark. Elverhöi (The Elf Hill), incidental music to Heiberg's Romantic national play Elverhøj, was first performed in Copenhagen on November 6, 1828 at the King's Theatre. "Still more Romantic in character [than Kuhlau's music to C.J. Boye's Romantic play William Shakespeare] is his music to Elverhøj, Kuhlau's most successful work and the most often performed play in the Danish repertory. It is largely based on old Danish and Swedish folktunes skilfully arranged to fit the dramatic situations, above all the tune Kong Christian stod ved højen mast (‘King Christian [IV] stood by the lofty mast’), which became the Danish national anthem." Gorm Busk in Grove online Oblong folio. Original publisher's dark grey wrappers. [1] (title), [2]- [3] (blank), 4-75, [76] (blank), [77] (contents), [78] (blank) pp. Wrappers quite worn and torn at spine and margins; lower stained.         The Crown Calendar for the Lincolnshire Lent Assizes, Holden at the Castle of Lincoln, in and for the County of Lincoln, on Saturday the Eighth Day of March, 1828, before the Right Honourable Sir William Alexander, Knight.Charles Winn, Esq. Sheriff

      J. W. Drury, Lincoln 1828 - Broadside measuring 370 x 240 mm., some foxing, small professional paper repair to lower blank margin (text unaffected) very good condition. A grim day at the courts. Calendar for the Lincoln assizes listing the names, age, origin and alleged crimes of some 37 men and women due to face trial.Although the sentences are not recorded, as this calendar was prepared in anticipation of the assizes in session for the 8 March 1828, many of those listed would have been transported to New South Wales or met their end at the gallows. The calendar makes sobering reading - in addition to the usual charges of larceny, deceit and housebreaking, it lists an unusually high proportion of violent crimes including robbery with assault and highway robbery, as well as 'carnal knowledge by force' (including one such grievous felony against a minor). We also learn of a most unusual case, that of one David Kemp, a farmers servant aged 24 years, here charged with having 'committed beastiality (sic) with a mare'.

A letter to Sir Walter Scott, Bart., exposing certain fundamental errors in his late essay on planting, and containing observations on the pruning and thinning of woods, and maxims for profitable planting [WITH] A letter to Sir Henry Steuart, Bart., on the improvement in the quality of timber, to be effected by the high cultivation and quick growth of forest-trees, in reply to certain passages in his "Planter's guide".

Printed by James Shalders Holt and sold by Longman London. & 1829 1828 - First editions. 2 works in two volumes, inscribed on each title to the Duke of Devonshire from the author, 123pp. & [ii], 133pp., modern marbled boards, full-length morocco spine labels. Withers owned and leased two plantations near Holt, Norfolk, and published several treatises on the planting and maintaining of forest plantations. He objected to Scott's essays on planting in the Quarterly Review, accusing him of advocating the "cheap, hole-digging, short-sighted Scotch system, which is calculated to bring upon those who adopt it only loss and dissapointment." Scott had proposed a collection in book form of his essays on planting and gardening , but late in 1828, perhaps as a result of Withers' criticism, withdrew the proposal (see Todd & Bowden 222A). The second work replies to Steuarts comments on the disagreement between Scott and Withers. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Announced as being published every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, its imprint varies with most issues reading "Imprenta de la Instrucción Primaria," others "Imprenta del Estado," and the name of the press operator changes several times: Pedro Casal, J. Fabian Solorzano, J. Gonzalez, and so on. Present here are eleven issues: 1 (29 January 1828), 20 ( 27 March 1828), 55 (1 July 1828), 58 (8 July 1828), 59 (10 July 1858) , 86 (2 October 1828), 87 (7 October 1828), 103 (2 December 1828), 130 (5 March 1829), 131 (12 March 1829), 133 (14 March 1829).

        Album Amicorum

Edinburgh, 1828. Album amicorum containing 11 drawings, three of which are in colour, and 36 pages of manuscript inscriptions. 8vo. Original condition, half calf over marbled boards, tooled spine, rose marbled endpapers. Significant wear to boards, otherwise very good condition, internally bright, a pleasing and entertaining volume. Uniquely from the female perspective in the early years of the Scottish emigration period, and nearing the end of the Industrial Revolution, these very personal jottings provide firsthand insight into culture, family, entertainment, politics, religion, and other matters either pressing or curious in nineteenth century Scotland, a time of transformation. Beautiful illustrations of Scottish scenes include elaborate formal costume, a sketch of the Water of Leith with a view of Cairns House and Cairns Castle in the distance, and the wild violet petunia. Speaking to interests abroad we find a vibrant coloured ink illustration of exotic birds, a charming nautical scene, and a sketch of the Roman temple ruins in the ancient Aramaic city of Palmyra in central Syria. Especially noteworthy is a lovely watercolour depiction of traditional Albanian costume as seen in southern Italy, titled in manuscript "Costume del Paese di Carafa, Provincia di Catanzaro Calabria Ultra, Nel Regno di Napoli." As well as some cleverly penned personal reflections, inscriptions include verses from William Shakespeare, Washington Irving, Sir Walter Raleigh, Lord Byron's Hebrew Melodies, Scottish poet James Thomson's "Castle of Indolence", and an interest chronology of Napoleon Bonaparte's career. The album amicorum, or book of friends, a precursor to modern-day autograph books, originated in German and Dutch linguistic regions (possibly originating in Wittenberg) in the middle of the sixteenth century. By the end of the century, they were common throughout Germany among students and scholars. Academics tended to retain the books for many years and gather the correspondence of fellow intellectuals with whom they associated; therefore the books began to function not only as sentimental artifacts, but also as a crude form of scholarly credentials, a form of the modern "list of references". In the 18th century they came into use among members of the burgeoning middle class. This new wave of autograph curators included women as well as men. Professors and fellow students made contributions to these albums, including inscriptions and illustrations, which were often by significant scholars or professional artists of the time. A typical volume began with a formal greeting to the album's owner or, in the case of English volumes, an address to its contributors, sometimes also including a heraldic shield or emblematic illustration by the signator. Contributions usually contained drawings, personal messages, and small pieces of verse. Inscriptions were often a few pages in length. Artistic autographers sketched full-page drawings, while less conventional entries included engravings or mementos such as embroidery, paper silhouettes, locks of hair, or pressed flowers. Water of Leith is the main river flowing through Edinburgh to the port of Leith where it flows into the sea via the Firth of Forth. . Very Good.

Spy Unmasked or, Memoirs of Enoch Crosby, Alias Harvey Birch, the Hero of Mr. Cooper's Tale of Neutral Ground: Being an Authentic Account of the Secret Services Which He Rendered His Country during the Revolutionary War... [with] a copy reprinted by the Fishkill Weekly Times, 1886

New York:: J. & J. Harper ,. 1828; 1886.. First edition. Hardcover. Good + condition. A first edition,1828, with the printers' sheets to the scarce 1886 reprint by the Fishkill Weekly Times. With a list of publications by O.A. Roorbach, Charleston, South Carolina, author of "Bibliotheca Americana : Catalogue of American Publications ... 1820-1861." The story of America's first double agent. Enoch Crosby (1750 - 1835), was an American soldier in the Continental Army and spy (recruited by John Jay) who posed as a British spy working for General Howe, working mostly in Westchester County New York, which at the time was "neutral ground" between the colonial forces further north and the British controlled New York City. On four separate occasions Crosby successfully infiltrated the British side, was captured, and escaped. It is thought that the character Harvey Birch in James Fenimore Cooper's 'The Spy', was based upon Crosby's life. Enoch Crosby's early years were spent in Putnam County, in the town of Southeast; the Enoch Crosby house (sometimes called Maple Hill Farm or Spy Hill Farm) still stands near the reservoir. 8vo, frontis portrait, xvi, [17]-206, ads [2], 4 pl., one map, uncut. Original quarter cloth and brown paper covered boards, paper label at spine. Previous owner name "Benjamin Matheson" contemporary with the issuance of the book at front board and at title page. With an advertisement for recent publications, "O. A. Roorbach, No. 296 King Street, Sign of the Bible, of Charleston, S.C." laid down verso front cover. Roorbach was the author of "Bibliotheca Americana : Catalogue of American Publications ... 1820- 1861." Some light scattered foxing, bumped, and extremes rubbed, original spine laid down. MOLTO BUONO
