The Crown Calendar for the Lincolnshire Lent Assizes, Holden at the Castle of Lincoln, in and for the County of Lincoln, on Saturday the Eighth Day of March, 1828, before the Right Honourable Sir William Alexander, Knight...Charles Winn, Esq. Sheriff

Lincoln: J. W. Drury, 1828. Broadside measuring 370 x 240 mm., some foxing, small professional paper repair to lower blank margin (text unaffected) very good condition. A grim day at the courts. Calendar for the Lincoln assizes listing the names, age, origin and alleged crimes of some 37 men and women due to face trial. Although the sentences are not recorded, as this calendar was prepared in anticipation of the assizes in session for the 8 March 1828, many of those listed would have been transported to New South Wales or met their end at the gallows. The calendar makes sobering reading - in addition to the usual charges of larceny, deceit and housebreaking, it lists an unusually high proportion of violent crimes including robbery with assault and highway robbery, as well as 'carnal knowledge by force' (including one such grievous felony against a minor). We also learn of a most unusual case, that of one David Kemp, a farmers servant aged 24 years, here charged with having 'committed beastiality (sic) with a mare'.

An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations

Edinburgh: for Adam Black and William Tait; and Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green, London,, 1828. With a Life of the Author, an Introductory Discourse, Notes, and Supplemental Dissertations by J. R. McCulloch. 4 volumes, octavo. Contemporary green half calf, comb-marbled boards, flat spines gilt-ruled in compartments, brown morocco labels, front and bottom edges untrimmed. Frontispiece, 2 plates, all with tissue guards. Boards lightly scuffed and very slightly bowed, small tear to bottom of front joint on volumes one and three, volume four partly unopened, two bookplates to front pastedown of each volume, offsetting from frontispiece and plates to adjacent pages and from bookplates to front free endpapers of volumes two to four. An excellent set. Based on the 1786 edition. "[T]he most well-known of the early nineteenth century English editions of Wealth of Nations because [John Ramsay] McCulloch was a distinguished political economist in his own right" (Tribe). In his Editorial Preface, McCulloch states that his own notes, of which the most important are collected in the final volume, are intended to "alert the reader to the fallacy of some principles advocated by Smith" while taking into consideration recent developments in academia and in legislation. The armorial bookplate does not belong to the noted Scottish physician Alexander Henderson, who lived in Edinburgh for a time, but rather a namesake who was employed as the Surveyor of Edinburgh Post Office. His inscription to the front free endpaper of volume one reads: "The Index to the [?] edition of this work (the same I presumed as that published in 1786 under A. Smith's own eye) contains 2103 references. A. H." The more modest bookplate above belongs to Robert Hoe, an American bibliophile who died in 1909 and to whom the copy would have passed at a later date. The front free endpaper has been spared offsetting from the bookplates by a loosely inserted issue of The Scots Times, which is dated February 23 1828 and contains a robust review of the present work.

History of the War in the Peninsula

London: John Murray; Thomas & William Boone,, 1828?-40. and in the South of France, from the year 1807 to the Year 1814 … 6 volumes, octavo (216 × 134 mm) Contemporary dark green half skiver, matching sand-grained cloth, title gilt direct to the spine, attractively panelled compartments, single gilt rule to spine and corner edges, edges and endpapers marbled. 55 engraved battle plans. A little rubbed at the extremities, front joint of the first volume just started at the head, light browning, some foxing to the plans as usual, overall an attractive and well-preserved set. The first volume, and last two are firsts, II-IV are seconds. The first volume was published by John Murray, who did not exercise his option on the next three having made a loss, Napier therefore published the rest of the history through Boone having raised the money by subscriptions. The work certainly divided opinion, "Soult considered it 'perfect', Sir Robert Peel 'eloquent and faithful', the Spanish general Alava felt it too pro-French, and a British officer in India demanded satisfaction on his return for a 'most unfounded calumny' about his conduct at Barossa" (ODNB) As a result most volumes are prefixed with "justificatory pieces" in answer to Napier's critics, his controversy with Beresford over Albuera was particularly rancourous. Perhaps judgement is best left to the acknowledged master chronicler of the conflict, Sir Charles Oman, who described Napier's work as "magnificent (if somewhat prejudiced and biased)".

The Siege of Carlaverock in the XXVIII Edward I. A.D.MCCC; With the Arms of the Earls, Barons, and Knights, who were Present on the Occasion; with a Translation, a History of the Castle, and Memoirs of the Personages Commemorated by the Poet

London: J. B. Nichols and Son. 1828. First Edition. Hardcover. Full calf rebacked and recornered with five raised bands on spine, gilt titles in second compartment and the other compartments with blind tooled decoration, boards with gilt fillet border and blind tooled decoration, aeg, marbled endpapers with bookplate on front pastedown, tissue guarded coloured frontis, title page printed in red and black, text illustrated with the arms of the nobles present at the siege and these nicely hand coloured, internally clean and bright. The poem "Siege of Carlaverock" is the only contemporary record of the seige of that castle in July 1300. This account is thought to have been written by the Fransiscan, Walter of Exeter and is noteworthy for several reasons. Perhaps firstly because it provides contemporary desciptions of the appearance and equipment of a late 13th century army and the manner in which they set about besieging a castle. It also contains the accurate blazon of over 100 peers of the realm, here reproduced in colour. The book presents a history of the castle itself, followed by the poem, the original text with the translation on the facing page, with the last section made up of short biographies of the worthies mentioned in the poem. Carlaverock castle is a triangular moated castle in south west Scotland. The siege of the castle in 1300 eventually ended, when having held up the might of the English army for some considerable time, the garrison of just sixty men finally surrendered. , Folio , xxxii + 380 pp .

Baltimore. 1828.. Broadside, 13 1/2 x 10 inches. Old fold marks. Very good, untrimmed. Matted. A wonderful political broadside announcing the incoming results of the 1828 election, issued at Baltimore on Monday morning, Nov. 10, 1828, by a committee of Maryland Jacksonians headed by Roger B. Taney. There are four lines of interior headlines, in differing types, proclaiming "ALL HAIL NEW YORK," with letters indicating that Jackson has thirteen of its nineteen electoral votes; "ALL HAIL, MAINE," with news that Jackson is leading in the state; "WELL DONE, NEW-HAMPSHIRE," with returns showing Jackson in the lead there; and "ALL HAIL, OHIO," announcing that Jackson is ahead there by five thousand votes. A fine, eminently displayable political piece from one of the hardest-fought elections in U.S. history.

Published by Joseph Swan, Glasgow 1828 - 276 x 216 mm (10 7/8 x 8 1/2"). 4 p.l., xvi, [1] (fly title), 91, [1] pp. FIRST EDITION. Handsome 19th century polished calf, covers with elaborate ruled and floral roll frame in gilt and blind, raised bands decorated with four gilt rules terminating in an arabesque at either end, gilt compartments formed by thick, thin, and dotted rules, tan morocco title label, turn-ins tooled in blind, all edges gilt. WITH 33 ENGRAVED SCENIC PLATES PRINTED ON INDIA PAPER AND MOUNTED, the engravings done by Joseph Swan after drawings by J. Feming and J. Knox. Original tissue guards (one missing). Very thin crack along top three inches of front joint (the joints otherwise not seriously worn), one large and two small abrasions to lower cover, but the original decorative binding solid, especially lustrous, and altogether pleasing. A hint of foxing (only) to some plates (two plates a bit more foxed), endpapers and first few leaves at front and back with faint discoloration at corners (apparently from glue), otherwise A FINE COPY INTERNALLY--fresh, bright, and clean throughout, and with first-rate impressions of the engravings. This book differs from other travel books of the day in its exclusive focus on a city--and not an exotic foreign city, but one known more for its industry than its scenery. Indeed, it would be difficult to name another work in this genre with views featuring smokestacks as well as cathedrals. However, at the time the present book was printed, Glasgow was known as the "Second City of the British Empire" for its important contributions to the economy, and was proud to be a city of what was then understood to be progress. The scenes here, by the capable engraver Joseph Swan (1796-1872), do not depict depressing views of dark satanic mills, but reveal a bustling modern city, where goods are constantly being produced, bought, sold, and shipped. Many of the engravings show citizens hard at work in various capacities, while others show them enjoying the leisure their prosperity affords. The "environs" of the title take us to the surrounding countryside, where the roofs, steeples, and smokestacks of the city on the River Clyde can be admired from a hillside advantage. Swan and John Leighton (fl.1828-40) collaborated on several scenic books about Scotland, with the others concentrating on the natural beauties of lakes and rivers.         Henry Clarke Taylor 1828 ALS

      - Extensive, very important missionary letter dates to that period of difficult. Froam April 28, 1828, he writes to Peter Jackson, a well-known illustrator for the Caxton Press, and a man of highly regarded piety. It seems the CMS had taken some steps against him and sent a loafer and idler to replace him. At this, the natives began to beg, and this is written in a lovely spelling to replicate the Jamaican accent, that he not leave them and even, though he notes it was not proper, begin to threaten the newcomer. He shares a list of grievances with the proceedings of the CMS, etc., and the whole is makred as extrememly confidential repeatedly. Four folio pages, from Salt Savanna, Jamaica. nearly 1000 words.
