        Moeurs Parisiennes

1828. first edition. Henry Monnier's Rare Album of Parisian MannersMONNIER, Henry. Moeurs Parisiennes… [Parisian Manners]. Paris: Chez Gihaut frères, 1828. First edition. Oblong quarto (9 1/2 x 13 inches; 241 x 332 mm.). Lithograph title-page and ten humorous hand colored plates lithographed by de Villain.Modern half red morocco over marbled boards decoratively ruled in gilt, front cover with rectangular red morocco label, decoratively bordered and lettered in gilt, plain spine with five raised bands, plain end-papers. A fine copy.A very scarce little album - we have only seen this title once before. According to OCLC there are just two copies located in institutions worldwide (Herzogin Anna Amalia Biblithek Klassik, and Kunstbiblio Staatliche Museen Zu Berlin) .The plates:1. The fools are down here for our pleasures)2. "Un Futur" - (A future)3. "Une Education à faire" - (An education…)4. "Inutilités" - (Utilities)5. "On ne vous voit plus Milord!." - (We can not see you My Lord!)6. "La rafraichissemens sont pour les dames" - (The refreshments are for the ladies)7. "Une demoiselle à produire" - (Introducing a young lady)8. "Des Mamans de Comédie" - (The mothers of comedy)9. "Monsieur mon Fils est-il chez lui?…" - (Sir, my son is home)10. "Le Contentement de sa personne" - (Contented People)Henry Monnier (1799-1877) was a French dramatist, caricaturist and actor. Between 1827 and 1832, he produced several albums of lithographs, representing the customs and features of his contemporaries.?"Between 1825 and 1827 Monnier passed much of his time in London, where he collaborated with Lami in what was to become the Voyage en Angleterre. On his return to Paris he embarked on a series of albums in which he recorded the manners and humors of the city with unprecedented profusion. Between 1826 and 1830 he satisfied the insatiable demand for his designs with almost 500 lithographs, nearly all of which were drawn with a pen and colored by hand. For each design he himself colored a master print and carefully supervised its subsequent preparation… Some of the salient titles in his human comedy may be mentioned. There are potpourris like Recréations du coeur et de l?'esprit, Paris vivant, and Rencontres Parisiennes. Macédoine pittoresque. There are more closely focussed surveys like Les grisettes, Moeurs administratives, Galerie théâtrale, Boutiques de Paris, and Six Quartiers de Paris. There are suites like Jadis et aujourd?'hui and Les contrastes, which take their departure from comparisons in time or of manners…Monnier was a satirist with a difference. His attitude towards his subjects hardly varies. His aim was to set down what he saw with elegance and precision, but with no overt interpretation or judgment?"(Ray, The Art of the French Illustrated Book, p. 199).Marie, Henry Monnier, #115-124; Melcher, p.31 (note).

A Pilgrimage in Europe and America : leading to the discovery of the sources of the Mississippi and Bloody River ; with a description of the whole course of the former and of the Ohio. By J.C. Beltrami

London: printed for Hunt and Clarke, 1828. 2 volumes, octavo. (8 3/4 x 5 3/4 inches). Small format errata leaf at the back of vol.I, 'Directions to the Binder' leaf at the end of vol.II. Lithographic portrait frontispiece of the author, on india paper mounted, 2 engraved folding plans with 2 accompanying pages of letterpress 'key' text. 1 large folding engraved map of the length of the Mississippi, 3 etched plates for Indian ornaments with 1p. of letterpress 'key' text. (Blindstamps to title, pp.49/50 in each volume, and all seven of the plates, plans and maps, ink numbers to verso of titles and pp.48 in each volume, occasional strengthening to inner margins). Original boards, neatly rebacked to style in green cloth, old letterpress labels, uncut (inner hinges strengthened) First edition in English of the author's "La decouverte des sources du Mississippi" first published in 1824. The first volume is an account of the author's travels in England, Germany, France and Italy. The second volume is most interesting: the author accompanied Major Long in his second expedition, and "Volume II is almost entirely devoted to the author's travels among the Northwestern Indians, of whom he gives some novel particulars. The narrations of what he witnessed are tinged with the peculiar glow of the author's temperament." (Field). The work was first published in French in 1824 and was met with skepticism, exemplified by the Revue encyclopedique where the work was severely criticized. Major Long echoed the sentiments of the ... Revue : " An Italian whom we met at Fort [Snelling] .. attached himself to the expedition, and accompanied us to Pembina. He has recently published a book which we notice merely on account of the fictions and misrepresentations which it contains." Clark II, 182; Field 111; Howes B-338; Pilling Algonquin p.42; Sabin 4605; Wagner-Camp 26a.2.

        President's Message

1828 - ADAMS, John Quincy. President’s Message. IN: National Intelligencerâ€" Extra, December 2, 1828. Washington: [Gales & Seaton], 1828. Broadside sheet of wove stock, measuring 15-1/2 by 21-1/2 inches, printed on recto only. $3000.Probably the earliest newspaper printing of Adams’ last State of the Union Address, in which he acknowledges the unfairness of the famous “Tariff of Abominations,” which all but lost him the presidency.Adams’ term as president was “a long nightmare, oppressed by a succession of alternately terrible and trivial events, which he seemed powerless to control or avoid” (Brookhiser, 93). Perhaps the last “terrible event” of Adams’ administration was his proposed a high tariff on imported industrial goods, particularly textiles and finished clothing. This bill he thought would protect New England factories, the hub of U.S. industry, from European competitors. Andrew Jackson’s supporters in Congress opposed the tariff but sought to exploit the question in order to embarrass Adams and help Jackson win the presidency in 1828. They framed a bill, which became known as the “Tariff of Abominations,” to “win support for Jackson in Kentucky, Missouri, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania while weakening the Adams administration in New England. The bill raised duties on iron, hemp, and flax (which would benefit Westerners), while lowering the tariff on woolen goods (to the detriment of New England textile manufacturers)” (University of Houston). The “Tariff of Abominations” also created a political uproar in the South, where it was denounced as unconstitutional and discriminatory. Southern exporters of raw cotton often took finished goods as partial payment for their crops and the tariff on imported textiles reduced their profits. “The tariff, southerners insisted, was essentially a tax on their region to assist northern manufacturers. South Carolina expressed the loudest outcry against the tariff. At a public meeting in Charleston, protesters declared that a tariff was designed to benefit ‘one class of citizens [manufacturers] at the expense of every other class.’ Some South Carolinians called for revolutionary defiance of the national government” (University of Houston). Adams was met with hostility on all fronts. In this, Adams’ fourth and last State of the Union Address, he acknowledges the unfairness of the tariff: “The tariff of the last session was in its details not acceptable to the great interests of any portion of the Union, not even to the interest which it was specially intended to subserve. Its object was to balance the burdens upon native industry imposed by the operation of foreign laws, but not to aggravate the burdens of one section of the Union by the relief afforded to another.” But it was too late. Adams’ address was delivered just the day before he learned of his defeat by Andrew Jackson. The ploy had succeeded. John Randolph of Virginia accurately described the object of the 1828 Tariff Bill as an effort to encourage “manufactures of no sort or kind, except the manufacture of a President of the United States.” Not recorded by Shaw & Shoemaker. Light soiling to top margin, shallow creasing to corners. An extremely good copy. Scarce. [Attributes: First Edition]

Vom Beruf unsrer Zeit für Gesetzgebung und Rechtswissenschaft.

Heidelberg, bey J. C. B. Mohr, 1828. 2., verm. Aufl. 8vo. El primero vió la luz en 1826 bajo el título de "A collection of fac-similes of scarce and curious prints, by the early masters., in the middle of the fifteenth century, to the end of the century following, . Vol. 1.- London: Published for the proprietor; and sold by Longman, 1826" (1).

HISTORY OF THE LIFE AND VOYAGES OF CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS

London: John Murray, 1828. 4 volumes. The first edition, preceding the American edition (and exceeding it in bulk by one volume) With two large engraved folding maps. 8vo, beautifully bound in contemporary dark green straight-grain morocco, beautifully tooled large gilt panels on each cover incorporating multi-fillet lines interlinked by elaborate arabesque floral devices at the corners, the spines beautifully gilt with elaborate panels between raised bands, the bands decorated with Regency gilt tools, decorative gilt and blind tooling abounds, a.e.g. XII, 473; (6), 490; viii, 413; vii, 489 pp. An especially fine and unusually handsome set, beautifully preserved. IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION IN A BEAUTIFUL PERIOD BINDING. This was a scholarly but popular biography based primarily on the work of the Spanish historian Navarrete. Navarrete had published his work on Columbus, which contained a number of previously unknown and significant documents. However, Irving felt that "the whole presented rather a mass of rich materials for history, than a history itself...[and] the sight of disconnected papers and official documents is apt to be repulsive to the general reader, who seeks for clear and continued narrative." In fact, he felt that nearly every account had been incomplete while many important documents and manuscripts ignored. Thus, he hoped to offer a more rigorous and yet accessible account. Written while Irving was a diplomatic attaché in Spain (1826-29), "it was the most painstaking effort of Irving's life, and it won him election to the 'Real Academia de la Historia', the friendship of Navarrete, and a literary reputation in Spain where the work is still quoted respectfully" (DAB). The American edition, published the same year in three volumes, had only one map. BAL A testament to Irving?s often-neglected gifts as a historian.

Geographische-statistisch und historische Charte von Arkansas

Weimar: im Verlage des geographischen Instituts, 1828. Copper-engraved map, with original outline colour, in excellent condition. The highly important first printed map to focus on Arkansas This map depicts the Arkansas Territory, formed in 1819, as one of the jurisdictions carved out of the massive Louisiana Purchase. It includes all of the lands making up the modern state of Arkansas, as well as the Indian Lands that now form the main portion of Oklahoma. The Indian Lands were not divided from Arkansas Territory until 1828, the same year that this map was printed. The present map is remarkable in that it is the first ever printed map to focus on Arkansas itself. The portrayal of the territory is far more advanced and of a larger scale than that depicted on the map that appeared in Carey & Lea's American Atlas (Philadelphia, 1822) that relegated the depiction of Arkansas to a small lower portion of the map. The present map is also an important document of the early development of Arkansas, showing the fledgling settlements that hug the Arkansas and Mississippi Rivers, such as Helena and Little Rock, the future state capitol. The territory features nine named and one unnamed county while the vast Indian Lands to the west are inhabited by the indigenous Choctaw nation and the Cherokee peoples who were exiled there from their native lands in the southern Appalachians. The territory of Arkansas was organized in 1819, and included both present day Arkansas and presend day Oklahoma. The southern border between what is now Texas and the territory was the Red River, as it is today. The search for suitable cotton growing land led settlers from southeastern Arkansas into Texas, and in 1828, the year this map was published, the Mexican sent a fact-finding mission to Texas to assess the growing "Anglo" problem in Eastern Texas. Interestingly, Arkansas became a state in 1836, the same year Texas became a Republic.

        September

London: Published by Dean & Co. Threadneedle Street, 1828. Colour printed aquatint. Printed on wove paper. In good condition with the exception of being backed with archival supporting sheet. A number of skillfully mended tears along the edges not extending into image. Bottom right corner has been repaired. Trimmed within the plate mark on all sides. Image size: 15 1/2 x 20 3/4 inches. A charming aquatint of a hunting dog named September, by the accomplished English engraver Henry Pyall. Henry Pyall was born in 1795, but first gained recognition as a publisher in 1820. By 1822, he had formed a publishing house in London with the engraver George Hunt. Pyall soon established himself as a successful aquatint engraver, producing many plates for the publishing houses of Ackermann & Co. and Thomas McLean. Throughout his career he reproduced mainly sporting and animal pictures and his soft, even technique made him an eminently successful printmaker. This charming print of a hunting dog named September is one of a pair of aquatints, the companion piece entitled "October," after paintings by Francis Calcraft Turner. This beautiful print is a marvelous example of Pyall's superior technique and keen compositional eye. Lane, Sporting Aquatints and Their Engravers, Vol. 1, p. 82, no. 1.

(text: 2 vols., quarto, 13 1/8 x 10 inches; atlas: folio, 13 x 18 1/2 inches). Text: half-titles. Atlas: pictorial lithographed upper wrapper bound as a title page, by Georges after Smith, 54 fine uncoloured lithographed views after Milbert by Deroy, V. Adam, Villeneuve, and others, all the plates on india paper mounted, 1 hand-coloured double-page lithographed map after H. Toquet. Expertly bound to style in dark blue half straight-grained morocco over contemporary marbled paper-covered boards, the flat spines divided into six compartments with double gilt rules, lettered in the second and fourth compartments, the others with simple repeat decoration in gilt First edition. A fine set including an outstanding series of American views, which `constitute a unique and valuable record' (Sherman) of the natural splendors to be seen along the Hudson, in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Niagara. `Milbert sailed from Havre on the 1st of September, 1815, and arrived in New York on the 20th of the following October. He settled in New York, where his first work was the making of several drawings of the mechanism of steamboats. He soon, however, turned to portrait-painting, and taught drawing. Milbert was later attached to the commission in charge of the leveling preparatory to the establishment of the Champlain Canal. In this connection he made a journey in one of the large steamers plying upon the Hudson. It was on this voyage that he collected much of the material for his Itinéraire Pittoresque. A few years after his arrival in New York he was charged by M. Hyde de Neuville, the French Minister, with the preparation of certain collections of natural history specimens, destined for the King's Garden in Paris. In his report on this collection, which is printed in full in his Itinéraire Pittoresque , he styles himself "Voyageur, Naturaliste du Gouvernement et Correspondant du Museum d'Histoire Naturelle au Jardin du Roi." It was through Milbert's efforts that the first living specimen of the American buffalo was introduced into France. On pages 33-6 of the first volume of text is given a very interesting description of the architecture and interior arrangement of the private houses of New York at this period' (Stokes Iconography of New York ) Most of the plates depict scenes in New York State, including New York City, West Point, Albany, Troy, Saratoga Springs and Niagara Falls. This set includes the rare 54th plate that is often lacking, as well as the fine coloured folding map of the northeastern United States. The area covered goes west to Ohio and the Great Lakes, and south to Virginia, with a significant portion of Canada, also included is an inset of the Hudson River region. Fine views are included as well of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. 'As an artist, Milbert loved to paint American landscapes, particularly those which showed the Hudson, "King of Rivers," flowing majestically through the mountains ... boundless curiosity, plus a contagious enthusiasm and a delightful sense of humor, make the journal as lively a document today as when it was penned a hundred and forty years ago. The pictures of what he saw, as of the time he drew them, constitute a unique and valuable record.' (Sherman).         James Buchanan makes an early reference to William R. King, long rumored to have been his gay lover: " W. King called upon me on Friday last? "

Washington, April 21, 1828. 7.75" x 10". "Autograph Letter Signed, ""James Buchanan,"" as Congressman, 1 page 7.75"" x 10"", Washington, April 21, 1828 to W. John G. Kummer in Lititz, Pennsylvania concerning several debt claims. Expected mailing folds, else very fine condition.""W[illiam]. King called upon me on Friday last & informed me that he entertained no hope of obtaining the any part of the claims against Mrs Turner or Mr Hollingshead; but he expects that at some future time the account against Eliza Holzman may be collected. He had not seen Mrs. Stewart. In the course of the conversation he admitted that he had received $70 for the Institution but from where he did not recollect: and he has promised to pay me that sum before the close of the session. I would suggest to you the propriety of sending me an order on him for that amount; as he will probably require an authority from you before he will pay me the money."" Buchanan's letter makes an early reference to William R. King (1786-1853) the North Carolina Senator and later Vice President under Franklin Pierce, long-rumored to be James Buchanan's lover. In 1819 Buchanan had been briefly engaged to Anne Coleman, the daughter of a prominent Pennsylvania iron manufacturer. She eventually broke off the engagement the same year and died soon afterward?"and Buchanan remained a bachelor for the remainder of his life. Buchanan enjoyed a close relationship with William R. King, who was also his political mentor?"having an additional decade of experience in Washington under his belt. The two shared a boardinghouse from 1834 to 1844 and were an inseparable pair?"attending most Washington social functions together. Buchanan even went as far as to adopt King's mannerisms and his romanticized view of southern life and culture. Andrew Jackson was purported to have mockingly referred to the pair ""Miss Nancy"" and ""Aunt Fancy."" After King departed Washington in 1844 to become the U.S. Minister to France, Buchanan lamented his solitude to his close friend Cornelia Roosevelt in May 1844: ""I am now 'solitary and alone,' having no companion in the house with me. I have gone a wooing to several gentlemen, but have not succeeded with any one of them. I feel that it is not good for a man to be alone, and [I] should not be astonished to find myself married to some old maid who can nurse me when I am sick, provide good dinners for me when I am well, and not expect from me any very ardent or romantic affection.""         Monandrian Plants of the Order Scitamineae, chiefly drawn from living specimens in the Botanic Garden at Liverpool

Liverpool: printed by George Smith, 1828. Large folio. (21 1/4 x 16 1/2 inches). 112 lithographic plates by Hullmandell, hand-coloured by George Graves, after Thomas Allport, Rebecca Miller, Margaret Roscoe, Mrs James Dixon, Ellen Yates, Emily Fletcher, Mary Waln and unidentified "native artists", 3 uncoloured lithographic illustrations. Contemporary green morocco gilt, covers with wide gilt border made up from fillets and a decorative roll tool surrounding a large central arabesque blocked in blind, expertly rebacked to style, the spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second, the others with repeat decoration in gilt, gilt turn-ins, pink glazed endpapers, gilt edges Provenance: James Stamford Caldwell (1787-1858, Linley Wood, Talke, Staffordshire, armorial bookplate) A fine copy (with a family connection) of this spectacular work, limited to 150 copies. Roscoe, a talented member of a talented family, was a banker from Liverpool and supporter of the liberal arts. This work, his masterpiece, was originally issued in 15 parts. The focus of the work is on a selection that is now considered part of the Zingiberales order of flowering plants. The order, which is almost exclusively tropical in origin, includes the canna liliies, arrowroot, ginger and tumeric. Roscoe provides 1 or 2 pages of text for each specimen, giving the plants binomial, a technical description followed by a fuller more general description, and ending with "observations" (notes on where the plant is from, who has described it previously, and often when the drawing of the plant was made) and "references" (brief explanations of the small numbered dissections found on each plate). The characteristic leaf shapes and flower-sprays provide the numerous artists of the work with some spectacular originals to work from. Helpfully, Roscoe identifies all but one of the artists, with the majority of the images having been provided by Thomas Allport. The plates are important relatively early lithographs which are attributed by Roscoe to George Graves, but they are almost certainly "actually printed by Hullmandell, though Graves may have placed the commission for Roscoe" (John Collins writing in the Plesch catalogue). Collins earlier notes that although Graves specialised in colouring natural history plates, he is not known as a lithographer. This copy is from the library of James Stamford Caldwell, the brother of Roscoe's daughter-in-law Hannah, wife of Roscoe's eldest son.         Cours complet d'économie politique pratique.

Paris: Rapilly, 1828-29 - 6 volumes, octavo (200 x 121 mm). Contemporary French calf, spines decoratively tooled in gilt and black (labels renewed), single-line gilt border on sides enclosing blind roll-tool border, marbled edges and endpapers. Sides a little rubbed, spine of volume VI chipped at head. An attractive set in a period binding. First edition of Say's lectures. Though Say ranks with Sismondi and Cournot in the originality of his contributions to economics, his reputation has suffered from his being put down primarily as an exponent of Adam Smith. Schumpeter, who calls his work "the most important of the links in the chain that leads from Cantillon and Turgot to Walras" offers convincing arguments to prove that Say does indeed belong to the French tradition. "Jean-Baptiste Say's Cours complet d'économie politique pratique was designed to 'place these [economic] abstractions within the reach of everyone' and teemed with practical illustrations of how trade restrictions increased the cost of items such as Jamaican rum, ploughs, bed sheets or curtains. Another notable feature of the Cours complet was the confirmation of Say's reappraisal of the British model since his condemnation of Britain's colonial and economic policies in De l'Angleterre et des Anglais (1815). The book reproduced nearly in extensio Say's 1824 article in defence of British rule in India. The print run of the first four volumes of the Cours complet was 2,300, and the first volume sold 700 copies in three months. These figures were respectable. But Say was disappointed, and it is noteworthy that a second edition had to wait until 1840. Despite the lucidity of Say's prose, the price - nearly 40 francs for the six volumes - and the length - nearly 3,000 pages - limited its impact as an instrument of popularization" (David Todd, Free Trade and its Enemies in France, 1814-1851, Cambridge 2015).         Execution of William Corder, For the Murder of Mary Martin in the Red.

1828. "Young Lovers All I Pray Attend, While I Relate a Deed, The Bare Recital of the Same, Will Make Your Hearts to Bleed." [Broadside]. [Execution]. [Suffolk, England]. Execution of William Corder, For the Murder of Mary Martin in the Red Barn. [London]: Printed by J. Catnach, 2 Monmouth-Court, 7 Dials, [1828]. 15" x 20" broadside. Text in five columns separated by black rules, five large woodcut vignettes, three at top of text, two below, depicting moments in the history of the crime. All but the hanging scene have captions. Account concludes with a long verse poem. Moderate toning, horizontal and vertical fold-lines, some edgewear and a few chips and minor tears along fold-lines, otherwise fine. * "The Red Barn Murder was a notorious homicide committed in Polstead, Suffolk, England in 1827. A young woman, Maria Marten, was shot dead by her lover, William Corder. The two had arranged to meet at the Red Barn, a local landmark, before eloping to Ipswitch. Maria was never heard from again. Corder fled the scene and, although he sent Martin's family letters claiming she was in good health, her body was later discovered buried in the barn after her stepmother spoke of having dreamed about the murder. Corder was tracked down in London, where he had married and started a new life. He was brought back to Suffolk, and after a well-publicized trial, found guilty of murder. He was hanged at Bury St. Edmonds in 1828; a huge crowd witnessed Corder's execution. The story provoked numerous articles in newspapers, and songs and plays. The village where the crime had taken place had become a tourist attraction and the barn was stripped by souvenir hunters.": Wikipedia.

BELTRAMI'S "PILGRIMAGE," AND THE QUARTERLY REVIEW

[London, 1828. Dbd. Minute dust soiling, faint foxing, some leaves loose. Very good. A self-published work, Beltrami's defense against his critics. This pamphlet is the second such rant by Beltrami. In an earlier pamphlet he responded to criticism leveled against the first edition of his LA DECOUVERTE DES SOURCES DU MISSISSIPPI ET DE LA RIVIERE SANGLANTE DESCRIPTION DU COURS ENTIER DU MISSISSIPPI... (New Orleans, 1824), his account of a voyage to the headwaters of the Mississippi with the Long expedition. Chief among that criticism, which appeared in the QUARTERLY REVIEW, was that Beltrami did not include a map in his narrative. Despite his defiant response, the second edition (London, 1828) included a map. Here Beltrami responds to criticism of a more general nature, dealing with certain minor details of his narrative. Good insight into the explorer's petulant character. Quite rare. Not on OCLC.

AN ACCOUNT OF SOME OF THE BLOODY DEEDS OF GENERAL JACKSON [caption title]

[N.p., 1828. Old fold lines. Light edge wear and foxing. Three small, mostly marginal, open tears, with the loss of parts of five lines of text near the bottom left, and just touching two coffin illustrations elsewhere. Good. One of the largest of the infamous "Coffin Broadsides" attacking Andrew Jackson in the presidential campaign of 1828. There was considerable mud-slinging between the Jackson and Adams camps during that campaign, which eventually saw the defeat of incumbent John Quincy Adams and the election of Andrew Jackson. Across the top of the present broadside are six woodcut coffins bearing the names of six militiamen shot on Jackson's orders during the War of 1812; an account of their wrongful execution follows. Below that there are more accounts of Jackson's evil and murderous deeds, including seven regular soldiers shot on Jackson's orders prior to the six militiamen (complete with six more coffin woodcuts); the tale of another soldier unfairly executed (another woodcut coffin); and a brief account of some Indian prisoners executed on Jackson's orders (four more coffins). The bottom portion includes a testimonial by Thomas Hart Benton, who himself had fought a duel with Jackson. The verso of the broadside contains a full-page account of the trial of the six militiamen who are the focus of the coffin broadside, reprinting court-martial proceedings dated between Nov. 21, 1814 and Jan. 22, 1815. The "Coffin Handbill" exists in several formats, of which this is one of the largest, and one of the only versions to contain the trial text on the verso. Not in Shoemaker, and only two other copies located in OCLC.
