Characters in the Grand Fancy Ball Given by the British Ambassador Sir Henry Wellesley, At Vienna, At the Conclusion of the Carnival, 1826; In Thirteen Highly Coloured Plates: With a Description of the Entertainments on That Occasion

London: R. Ackermann, 1828. Second Edition. Quarter Calf. Moire Boards. Very Good. 4to. 24 by 19 cm. Frontis, title, 16 pp. followed by 12 hand-colored plates of fancy masquerade dress. Depicting a ball that in its day was remembered for being especially opulent and over-the-top. The dress was inspired by novels, notably those of Sir Walter Scott and Baron La Motte Fouque. What distinguished this entertainment certainly from the masquerade of more recent times is how the evening was minutely planned so that the theatrical dress was coordinated with the dances and the scheduling of the evening unfolded not unlike a Vaudeville entertainment, but one in which the guests themselves were the willing players, and so there was a blurring of audience and actors/models. Scuffing to the cover. Scattered soiling, light creases to some some leaves, other signs of moderate use. Tissue guards intact.

Execution of William Corder, For the Murder of Mary Martin in the Red.

1828. "Young Lovers All I Pray Attend, While I Relate a Deed, The Bare Recital of the Same, Will Make Your Hearts to Bleed." [Broadside]. [Execution]. [Suffolk, England]. Execution of William Corder, For the Murder of Mary Martin in the Red Barn. [London]: Printed by J. Catnach, 2 Monmouth-Court, 7 Dials, [1828]. 15" x 20" broadside. Text in five columns separated by black rules, five large woodcut vignettes, three at top of text, two below, depicting moments in the history of the crime. All but the hanging scene have captions. Account concludes with a long verse poem. Moderate toning, horizontal and vertical fold-lines, some edgewear and a few chips and minor tears along fold-lines, otherwise fine. * "The Red Barn Murder was a notorious homicide committed in Polstead, Suffolk, England in 1827. A young woman, Maria Marten, was shot dead by her lover, William Corder. The two had arranged to meet at the Red Barn, a local landmark, before eloping to Ipswitch. Maria was never heard from again. Corder fled the scene and, although he sent Martin's family letters claiming she was in good health, her body was later discovered buried in the barn after her stepmother spoke of having dreamed about the murder. Corder was tracked down in London, where he had married and started a new life. He was brought back to Suffolk, and after a well-publicized trial, found guilty of murder. He was hanged at Bury St. Edmonds in 1828; a huge crowd witnessed Corder's execution. The story provoked numerous articles in newspapers, and songs and plays. The village where the crime had taken place had become a tourist attraction and the barn was stripped by souvenir hunters.": Wikipedia..

Eigenh. geburtstäglicher Morgengruß mit Bleistiftzeichnung und U.

[Schloss Dornburg/Saale], 28. VIII. 1828.. 1 S. 4to. Wasserzeichen: zweikonturige Antiquaversalien "E & R" (Fragment)..

History of the War in the Peninsula and in the South of France, from the year 1807 to the Year 1814. [6 Volumes]

Published by John Murray and Thomas & William Boone, First Edition 1828 - 1840. 6 Volumes. 1828. All first editions in contemporary half leather covers, twin morocco lettering label's between slightly raised bands to the spines, marble paper covered boards, page edges and end papers. 8vo. 9'' x 5½''. Volume 1; published 1828, 7 plates of maps. 530 pages, plus appendix. Volume 2; published 1829, 8 plates. 534 pages. Volume 3; published 1831, 12 plates. 640 pages. Volume 4; published 1834, 9 plates, 589 pages. Volume 5; published 1836, 8 plates 581 pages. Volume 6; published 1840, 10 plates, 688 pages. Plates are plans or maps of all the important sieges & battle strategies etc. all present as called for. Without doubt the best descriptions of the wars ever written. From the library of Hugh Cecil Lowther, Earl of Lonsdale [The Lowther Castle Set] with his coat of arms bookplate to each front paste down and leather cameo motif to each front cover. Sporadic foxing to some of the battles plans, 2 of the 12 leather labels to the spines with small pieces missing. The first volume of this history appeared in 1828. The publisher John Murray was disappointed by the sales of the first volume so Napier published the remainder himself [Thomas and William Boone, Strand]. But it was at once seen that the great deeds of the Peninsular War were about to be fittingly commemorated. The excitement which followed the appearance of each volume was proof of innumerable pamphlets issued by those who believed themselves to be victims, by dint of personal altercations with many distinguished officers. The success of the book proved still further an absence of competition amidst bitter controversy. The histories of Southey and Lord Londonderry fell still-born, and Sir George Murray, Wellington's quartermaster-general, who had been determined to produce an historical work, gave up the attempt in despair. Napier's success was due to a combination of factors. When in 1840 the last volume of the History was published, his fame not only in England but in France and Germany was well established. The Peninsular War (1807 - 1814) was a military conflict between Napoleon's empire and the allied powers of Spain, Britain and Portugal for control of the Iberian Peninsula during the Napoleonic Wars. The war started when French and Spanish armies invaded and occupied Portugal in 1807, and escalated in 1808 when France turned on Spain, its ally until then. The war on the peninsula lasted until the Sixth Coalition defeated Napoleon in 1814, and is regarded as one of the first wars of national liberation, significant for the emergence of large-scale guerrilla warfare.         Mexico in 1827.

Colburn, London 1828 - 1st edition. 2 vols, [xx], 591 pp. + 5 plates of which 2 are folding and a large map of Mexico: viii, 730 pp. + 8 plates of which 5 fold, and a large map of mining routes. (Vol. 2 also has 5 woodcuts in text.) NOTE: ALL THE PLATES IN THIS SET WERE SUPERBLY HAND-COLORED.Ward was the British Charge d'Affaires in Mexico from 1825 - 1827; his account of Mexico is particularly notable in the area of mining -- British interest in Mexican mining was at a high pitch, and Ward's job was to investigate the viability for investment -- though he saw much of the country. The plates are superb, from drawings by Ward's, wife on the spot, This is one of the finest early travel books on Mexico, observed shortly after it had gained independence from Spain -- Streeter calls it the "classic book on Mexico." An appendix, not by Ward, includes sections on Texas, Sinaloa and Sonora. (Sabin 101302) This copy has been professionally rebound with new leather spines over the original boards; spine is in compartments, gilt-tooled, red title pieces: plates still protected by original tissues, without any of the foxing that often accompanies these plates. Very nice copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[HUGE COLLECTION OF CHENEY FAMILY CORRESPONDENCE, SPANNING THE 1870s TO THE EARLY 1900s, INCLUDING BUSINESS CORRESPONDENCE RELATING TO THEIR IVORY IMPORTING AND IVORY GOODS MANUFACTURING FIRM, THE LEGAL PRACTICE OF GEORGE L. CHENEY, SOCIETY FUNCTIONS, AND MUCH MORE]

[New York, Chicago, Essex, Ct., and elswhere. 1850s to 1910s].. Thousands of letters, usually numbering from two to four pages each, most with the original stamped envelopes included. Also included are diaries, journals, invoices for goods, etc. Expected wear, mostly to envelopes. On the whole in very good condition. A massive collection of original correspondence, numbering into the thousands of individual letters, recording the business and personal lives of George A. Cheney, his wife Sarah Greene Cheney, their son George L. Cheney, his wife, Harriet Weeks Cheney, and many others. George Cheney was the owner of a prominent Connecticut ivory business, importing ivory goods from India and selling manufactured ivory pieces in the United States. His wife, Sarah Greene Cheney, came from a prominent Rhode Island family, and her father was one of George A. Cheney's first employers. Their son, George L. Cheney, was a graduate of Harvard and Harvard Law School, became a prominent lawyer, and was also involved in the ivory business. This archive is a remarkable record of several decades in the lives of a prominent Connecticut and New York family, and offer endless opportunities for research into the business and social affairs of the era. George Arthur Cheney (1828-1901) was only twenty-one years old when he made his first voyage to Africa, in 1850. He learned Swahili and Portuguese, making him a valued asset as a trader in eastern Africa. In early 1853 he married Sarah Greene, the daughter of his employer, Rufus Greene, a Providence, Rhode Island shipping merchant who was eager to participate in the trade with Zanzibar. Early in his career George Cheney made a name for himself by brokering a single deal for 60,000 pounds of ivory. Cheney spent most of the decade of the 1850s in Zanzibar, working for Rufus Greene and exporting a great variety of goods, including ivory, from Africa to the United States. In 1862, just after the period covered by this archive, Cheney severed his relationship with Rufus Greene and became a partner of Samuel Merritt Comstock, who played a leading role in the ivory business and was one of the shapers of the town of Ivoryton, Connecticut. At their peak, Comstock, Cheney and Co. would employ some 700 people, and Ivoryton was a full- fledged company town, dominated by a large ivory finishing factory and with dormitories for workers and a factory store. George Cheney and Sarah Greene had four children, three of which survived to adulthood. Two of their children were born to them in Zanzibar. Mrs. Cheney returned to the United States in 1856, and George A. Cheney moved back to the U.S. shortly thereafter. Their son, George L. Cheney, graduated Phillips Exeter Academy in June, 1874, attended Harvard University (class of 1878) and then Harvard Law School, from which he graduated in 1881. By the early 1880s he was involved with the family ivory business in Connecticut, Comstock, Cheney & Co. He not only worked in the family business, he also practiced law, and included in this collection are two autograph notes, signed (on one sheet) by James Bradley Thayer, Harvard Law School professor, recommending George L. Cheney for jobs. This collection is made up of various sorts of manuscript material - the bulk being autograph letters, almost always with their original addressed and stamped envelopes. Many of the envelopes bear the printed return address of Comstock, Cheney & Co. There are also manuscript diaries and commonplace books, receipts for goods purchased over several decades, land and property indentures, etc. The majority of the letters are from George L. Cheney to his parents, and from them to him, covering the period from the 1870s-1890s. Numbering in the hundreds, these letters discuss family events and goings on, and matters relating to the family ivory business. There are also a large number of letters to George L. Cheney from his sibling, from business associates and from school friends. There are also hundreds of letters between George L. Cheney and his wife, Harriet Weeks Cheney. Cheney seems to have often been working in Chicago, and wrote to Harriet Cheney in New York. There are also a large number of letters to Harriet Cheney from members of her family, and to George L. Cheney from his daughters Sarah and Julia. The earliest letters in the collection were written to Harriet Cheney's mother, Mrs. R.D. Weeks, in New York and the Berkshires in the 1850s. Also included are several manuscript diaries of George L. Cheney, including those kept while he was a student and law student at Harvard, expense books for the same period, and dairies for the years 1885 to 1887. There are also literary commonplace books from the 1870s and early 1900s, as well as dozens of family bills and invoices, many of them on Connecticut billheads, for the same period.
