The treatyse of fysshynge wyth an angle

Printed ... for William Pickering by Thomas White London: Printed ... for William Pickering [by Thomas White], 1827. Publisher's dun-colored light boards. Uncut copy. Light overall rubbing; spine with minor loss of paper. Old bookseller's description affixed to front free endpaper; small oval stain to corner of half-title and frontispiece, a bit of light offsetting from plates. A very nice copy in a later open-back cardboard slipcase.. 8vo (19 cm, 7.5"). Frontis., [2], xiii (pagination skips v–viii), [1], 41, [1] pp.; 4 plts. First Pickering edition of the first known English work on fishing. Reprinted from the Boke of St. Albans, the famed sporting book originally published by Wynkyn de Worde in 1496, this essay on angling is generally attributed — although not certainly so — to Dame Juliana Berners (or Barnes), supposed prioress of Sopwell nunnery circa 1450. If that attribution is correct, this is not only the earliest printed English work on fishing, but also one of the earliest published English works by a female author. Regardless of its source, it seems to have served as an inspiration both to Izaak Walton and to William Pickering, who printed several editions of Walton, including a particularly lavish production in 1836.The volume is printed with the original language and spelling preserved, and is illustrated with a woodcut frontispiece of a fisherman taken from de Worde's 1518 edition that is cited as the earliest known depiction of an angler fishing with a rod, as well as with six woodcuts (provided at the back of the volume in the form of four plates) showing types of poles, hooks, etc. As the title-page proclaims, the work was printed with the types of John Baskerville, making it one of the last such printings done in England. A later hand has helpfully added pencilled marginalia clarifying archaic or obscure terms and suggesting subject headers.=> This copy uncut and in original boards: Rare thus.

Diritto romano ad uso di gio. battista speroni. 1827.

Very Good. FOUR AUTOGRAPH LETTERS with good content by Humphry Davy to his close friend and patron Davies Gilbert. Gilbert would indeed succeed Davy as President of the Royal Society in 1827 after Davy resigned due to illness. In the third letter (one sheet, both sides), Davy writes to Davy while convalescing with Coleridge's friend Tom Poole ("...Mr Poole my kind Host desires to be respectfully remembered to the Pres.       Published and sold at the Tunnel Works Rotherhithe and by Messers. Harvey and Darton 55 Gracechurch Street. Printed by the London: Published and sold at the Tunnel Works, Rotherhithe, and by Messers. Harvey and Darton, 55, Gracechurch Street. Printed by the Philanthropic Society, St. George's Fields., 1827. First ed. Oblong 16 mo., 5 3/8 x 3 3/4 inches, (26) pp., 12 plates, steel engravings and lithographs, of which two are folding and one has an overlay. Original marbled paper wrappers, with printed label, backed in linen. Slight occasional foxing., with a short tear to the backing at the base of the spine. Very good.THE FIRST UNDERWATER TUNNEL IN THE WORLD "Several projects to build a tunnel under the Thames had previously been attempted in order to improve north-south communications. In 1798, Ralph Dodd suggested the construction of a tunnel between Gravesend and Tilbury. Although a shaft was effectively sunk at Gravesend in 1800-1802, construction was stopped for two main reasons: the presence of quicksand, which allowed the river to break in, and the exorbitant cost. In 1804, the Thames Archway Project was started for a tunnel between Rotherhithe and Limehouse. The engineer was Robert Vazie. After a shaft was sunk at Rotherhithe, Vazie began work on a drift-way. In November 1807, Richard Trevithik replaced Vazie as engineer. The drift-way eventually revealed that much of the strata was sand and gravel, giving way to quicksand occasionally. In 1808, a constant flood finally forced Trevithik to stop the excavation. The drift-way was only within 70 ft. of the north bank. In 1809, the Thames Archway Company opened a public competition for schemes that could effectively address the technical and financial challenges in the building of this tunnel. Charles Wyatt won with a proposal to make a tunnel by digging a trench in the bed of the Thames, sinking brick cylinders into the trench and joining them underwater. The Company hired John Isaac Hawkins to test the viability of the plan. In 1810-1811, the cylinders were built, lowered and joined with a mixture of mud and gravel. However, this new scheme again failed to solve the two familiar difficulties: the vulnerability of the riverbed and the high cost. As we will see in this essay, Brunel's engineering ingenuity eventually overcame both of these formidable challenges." Pablo Alvarez, Curator of Rare Books, University of Rochester.

BuchananÕs greatest literary achievement of his later years was his Rerum Scoticarum Historia, initially published in 1582, in which he related the history of Scotland from its origin till the death of the regent Lennox in 1571. .... the underlying object of the book is the inculcation of those principles of political and religious liberty of which Buchanan had been the consistent champion throughout his career. By the leading scholars of Europe it was adjudged to be a work of transcendent merit, and even in the eighteenth century it was seriously debated whether Caesar, Livy, or Sallust had been his model. In this History, which for fully two centuries kept its place as a standard authority, Buchanan had appealed both to scholars and protestant theologians... [Cambridge History of English & American Literature]. While the work was extremely popular, and remained in print almost continuously well into the 19th C., this was one of the more ambitious editions, extending the History until the 'present' day. .         Rosier des Indes jaune [Hume's Blush Tea-scented China]

Paris: [C.L.F. Panckoucke, 1827-1833]. Stipple engraving, printed in colours and finished by hand, engraved by Bessin. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling. 13 x 9 11/16 inches. A beautiful image from "Choix des Plus Belles Fleurs": one of greatest flower books ever published by the most celebrated flower painter of all time. Pierre- Joseph Redouté was one of the world's great flower painters. Born into a family that had been painters for at least two generations, Redouté went to Paris in 1782 with his brother where they worked as scene painters for the Théâtre Italien. Redouté painted flowers in his spare time. The search for subjects led him to the Jardin du Roi and eventually to Gerard van Spaendonck who made him an assistant. While at the Jardin du Roi, Redouté came to know Charles-Louis L'Heritier, an amateur botanist and writer of independent means. He gave Redouté a full time job as an illustrator, instructing him in plant anatomy. Redouté's scientific understanding of plants contributed greatly to the clarity of his depictions. But it was Redouté's work in stipple engraving and colour printing that was to be of the greatest importance. Stippling and the application of two or three colour inks to one plate were engraving innovations that Redouté brought to French printmaking, and these were brought to perfection in his three great works: Les Liliacees (1802-1816), Les Roses (1817-1824) and the work from which this image comes Choix des plus belles fleurs... et ... des plus belles fruits which was published in 36 parts with 144 plates between 1827 and 1833. The present image shows Redouté at his most assured, combining the best of his artistic background with his skill as an observer of nature. He writes in the preface to the Choix : ''It is with the benefit of experience, and encouraged by the most flattering approval of naturalists and painters of France and abroad, that I undertook took this most agreeable of botanical works. By ceaseless observation of nature, in its constancy and its variety of forms and colours, I believe that I have reached that synthesis of botanical accuracy, composition and colouration that is essential to produce the perfect image of the plant kingdom.'         Philadelphia von dem grossen Baum zu Kingston. [Philadelphia from the Great Tree of Kingston (i.e. Kensington)]

1827. Pen, watercolour and gouache on wove paper, with integral brown gouache border with ruled lines in black and white, signed, dated and titled beneah the image in white gouache in a cartographic hand "Pinx[it]: C:A: Düring.1827. / Philadelphia von dem grossen Baum zu Kingston". (Old crease, some light surface damage). Sheet size: 18 3/4 x 23 3/4 inches; image size: 14 1/4 x 19 1/2 inches. A beautiful painting of Philadelphia in the 1820s This superb painting of Philadelphia by German artist C. A. During depicts the city from just beyond the great elm tree at Kensington on the Delaware. Unfortunately we have been unable to discover any information regarding the artist of this magnificent view of Philadelphia. Obviously a German artist, the view is typical of German topographical paintings produced towards the middle of the nineteenth century. The heavy gray border and thick painterly technique was a common tool used by artists across Germany, and was particularly favored by landscape painters, who used this artistic framing device to create a sense of depth in their work. This superb view is obviously from the hand of a professional artist whose exquisite technique and meticulous attention to detail is nothing short of breathtaking. Düring's work presents a familiar view of the city from the great elm at Kensington, under which William Penn concluded his treaty with the Indians in 1682. This view of Philadelphia was a favored vantage point for artists throughout the nineteenth century and was in fact sketched by Benjamin Franklin before he departed for the Continent in 1760. The view of Philadelphia from the Kensington elm is best known through the frontispiece of William and Thomas Birch's famous portfolio of Philadelphia views published in 1798, but it was in fact, used in an earlier view by John James Barralet in 1796. In contrast to the flat panoramic views that characterized early eighteenth century perspectives of American cities, this pastoral approach gained ascendancy toward the end of the century. It represented a more picturesque approach to landscape painting, which would come to characterize topographical views in the nineteenth century. Düring's magnificent view most closely resembles an engraving of Philadelphia executed by the English engraver George Cooke. Cooke's work, entitled "Philadelphia from the great Tree Kensington, under which Penn made his treaty with the Indians" is almost identical, and was certainly used by During as a model for his view. Published in 1812, Cooke's view of Philadelphia was extremely popular and was widely available throughout Europe. It is highly conceivable that Düring came across this view and used it as a model for his charming painting. A true collector's item, this magnificent view is not only a superb example of German landscape painting, but also a truly unique view of Philadelphia. Light foxing to a few leaves, interior otherwise fresh. A handsome copy of a scarce edition. * First edition.         Wild Turkey

London: Robert Havell, Jr., 1827. THE MOST FAMOUS AMERICAN NATURAL HISTORY IMAGE Approximate plate size: 39" x 261/2" Approximate frame size: 491/2" x 37" All works are first-edition, aquatint engravings with original hand-color Published in London between 1827 and 1838 by Robert Havell, Jr. The "Wild Turkey" is widely considered the crowning achievement of Audubon's monumental Birds of America. The turkey is distinct from any European species and so ubiquitous that Benjamin Franklin had proposed it as the American national symbol, preferring it to the eagle. Not only is the symbolism of the Wild Turkey significant, but artistically, it is perhaps Audubon's masterpiece. The first plate to be engraved for Audubon's Birds of America, more care was lavished on its production than any other illustration. Audubon recorded detailed and insightful observations about the species, and expressed a distinct admiration for the creature through his writings. Lizars' masterful skills in copperplate engraving add an especially detailed and precise aspect to the image, enhancing its appearance of three-dimensionality. This particular example is even more remarkable because it is one of only roughly ten that were printed by Lizars. After Havell took over the project, he printed 250 more examples that retained Lizars' name on the plate. Those actually issued by the Scottish printer are among the most desirable, and even more distinguished for their extreme rarity. from the Sax Meningen set.. First Edition. Book.
