      Warnsdorf, ab 1827, - circa 25 x 21,5 cm. 2 Blatt, 274 Seiten (2 übersprungen), 2 Bll., 283-309 SS., 8 Bll., beigebunden: 1 gefalteter lith. Plan, 19 (8 aquarellierte) Federzeichnungen und 4 Bleistiftzeichnungen Halb-Leder d. Zt. mit Rückschild "Vgl. Wurzbach XXI, 244. " [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Red Rover [Le Corsaire Rouge], a Tale, by the author of the Pilot, etc., etc.

The Red Rover & The Prairie. Son premier roman marin fut The Pilot. [Spiller & Blackburn, 9]. Un bon exemplaire en reliure d¿époque. [This translation is made by google. If you have any question, I will be happy to answer it] A few days before the edition of London (November 30, 1827), and especially before the Philadelphia edition (January 9, 1828), was published in Paris on 27 November 1827. Cooper, who was in Europe between 1826 and 1833, published a number of his novels, and for some, the true original edition is the edition published in Europe. As the publication dates are sometimes difficult to know today, the American edition is often considered the original but for two novels, it is established that the original edition is indeed the printed edition in Paris: The Red Rover & The Prairie. This novel is about the sea, a subject that Cooper had little use for while he was an excellent seaman for several years. Cooper is considered one of the pioneers of the American literary genre Nautical fiction, a genre that really took shape in the line of romance and Byron. His first novel was The Pilot. This novel is also one of the first to have a real black character (Scipio Africanus) in American literature. Full-brimmed full rowan bindery, marbled slices. Small defects at the corners, upper heads flush, a lower cap damaged, small slit at the head of 2 jaws. The paper is fairly modest, the rednesses, the preliminary sheets of volume 1 in the disorder, small marginal wetting clear in volume 2 on a few pages, very clear angular wetting on volume 1. Provenances: Loppin de Montmont with its motto "Ny amy ny ennemy à demy"; Maximilian Schoirfer (ex libris with a falcon). A very rare work, very rarely auctioned (for 20 years, there seems to have been only one copy in London), and which circulates very little on the market. [Spiller & Blackburn, 9]. A good copy in vintage binding. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

St. verso tit., teilweise fleckiges Exemplar. Valentin, gesch. Orth., p.55, 200"The early decades of the 19th century were marked by a rash of orthopaedic institutes in France. One such was founded in Paris in 1823 by Guillaume Jalade-Lafond, deviser of an "extension chair" (Streckstühle "Fauteuil oscillatoire") and "oscillatory bed" (Streckbett "Lit extenseur oscillatoire") with which he even attempted reduction of congenital hip dislocation. The gardens of his institute at Chaillot abounded with elegantly clad maidens engaged in varied gymnastic activities. Lafond took his son-in-law, Vincent Duval into partnership. Duval gained a reputation for his treatment of club-foot, on which he wrote a treatise, and it was this treatise that the novelist Gustave Flaubert consulted when he was planning for his character, Doctor Bovary, to perform an ill-fated section of the Achilles tendon. Towards of the end of the century, Duval's son Emile produced his own book on the subject." David LeVay, Hist. Orthop., pp.253-254 Very Rare!         The florist's guide, and cultivator's directory; containing coloured figures of the choicest flowers, cultivated by florists.

      London James Ridgway -1832 1827 - First edition. 2 volumes, 8vo., 200 hand-coloured engraved plates by J. Watts after E.D. Smith plate 46 strengthened on verso of fore-margin, uncut, modern green half morocco gilt, red morocco labels, marbled sides, light offsetting from plates to text, a very attractive set. 'Born at Cockington near Torquay, Devonshire, England in 1783, Sweet worked as a gardener from the age of sixteen, and became foreman or partner in a series of nurseries. He was associated with nurseries at Stockwell, Fulham and Chelsea. In 1812 he joined Colvills, the famous Chelsea nursery, and was elected a fellow of the Linnean Society. By 1818 he was publishing horticultural and botanical works. He published a number of beautifully illustrated works on plants cultivatd in British gardens and hothouses. The fine plates were mainly drawn by Edwin Dalton Smith (1800–1883), a botanical artist, who was attached to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. His works include Hortus Suburbanus Londinensis (1818), Geraniaceae (five volumes) (1820–30), Cistineae, Sweet's Hortus Britannicus (1826–27), Flora Australasica (1827–28) and British Botany (with H. Weddell) (1831). He died at Chelsea, London in January 1835. He was charged with receiving a batch of plants allegedly stolen from the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. It was suggested that this was an attempt to frame him by an official at Kew whom Sweet had criticised. He was acquitted after a well-publicised trial. Robert Sweet received high praise from his contemporaries at his trial and was described as possibly the first practical botanist.' Nissen BBI 1925; Great Flower Books, p77; Pritzel 9080.       Leipzig, Hartmann, 1827, 8, XXII, 647 pp. mit 11 Steindrucktafeln, feiner Halbleder der Zeit sehr sauberes, sehr schönes Exemplar. Erste deutsche Ausgabe! Etienne Esquirol war der prominenteste Schüler von Phillippe Pinel (1745-1826), des berühmten Reformers der Irrenheilkunde. Mit Pinel war Etienne Esquirol (1722-1840) der Begründer der französischen Schule der Psychiatrie. Esquirol hat erstmalig statistische Methoden in die psychiatrische Forschung eingeführt und die humanistischen Ideen seines Lehrers zur Anwendung gebracht. Er gilt als Schöpfer und Begründer der modernen Irrenheilkunde. Sein Lehrbuch der Geisteskrankheiten war fast für ein halbes Jahrundert die Bibel der Psychiatrie. Der beigefügte Tafelteil bildet die erste wichtige Ikonographie der Irrenheilkunde. Von ganz besonderem Interesse sind die "..erläuternden Zusätze" von Heinroth (1773-1843), die Seiten 535 bis 647 umfassend. Neben seinem "Lehrbuch" einer der wichtigsten Beiträge des großen Psychiaters. "The subsequent terminology or separation of the specific types of epilepsy developed gradually in the Nineteenth Century. J.E. Esquirol, psychiatrist at the Salpétrière, wrote in 1815 that attacks alternate in intensity and that there are severe or slight attacks which he (1838) called "le grand mal" and "le petit mal". Although grand mal meant a generalized convulsion, the meaning of petit mal remained vague". McHenry, p.390 Waller 2816 cf.         Traité des Membranes en General, et de Diverses Membranes en Particulier. Nouvelle edition, revue et augmentée de notes par M. Magendie.

      Paris:: Méquignon-Marvis & Gabon, [1827].. 8vp. xxxiv, 349 pp. Quarter modern dark calf over brown boards, marbled edges, gilt-stamped black leather spine label. Ink stamps of E. B. Krumbhaar and H. Russell Fisher on half-title. Fine. SCARCE. “Bichat conceived the idea of a science of anatomy and pathology based upon an accurate classification of the various tissues of the body, their distribution in the various organs and parts, and their particular susceptibilities to disease. He is regarded as the founder of modern histology and tissue pathology” (Garrison & Morton). “The foundation of histology and tissue pathology. Bichat generalized Pinel's theory, expressed in Nosographie Philosophique (1798) that pathology must be based upon the structure on the tissues of which bodily organs are composed, regardless of where in the body they occur. Bichat distinguished twenty-one different types of tissue, which he classified according to texture and to properties: extensibility, contractility, and the vital properties—organic contractility and sensibility (‘insensible' or ‘subliminal') on the one hand, and animal contractility and sensibility (‘sensible' or ‘conscious') on the other. Each tissue differed in its diseases, as diseases were nothing more than alterations in the tissue's vital properties. Claude Bernard said of Bichat that he ‘decentralized life and incarnated it in the tissues' (Norman in Hall II, 129). Provenance: Edward Bell Krumbhaar (1882-1966) was an American scientist. Krumbhaar “was a distinguished pathologist and cardiac physician, as well as one of Philadelphia's leading historians of medicine. A founder of both the Section on Medical History of the College of Physicians and the American Association of the History of Medicine (AAHM), Krumbhaar also served as president of the College and of the AAHM.” He was perhaps best known for his translation of Arturo Castiglioni's History of Medicine in 1941 (PASCL).         Orthopaedie oder Werth der Mechanik zur Heilung der Verkrümmungen am menschlichen Leibe. + Orthopaedie oder die Verkrümmungen der Wirbelsäule und des Rumpfes und deren Heilung. 2 Bde.

      Berlin, Georg Reimer, 1827/1831, 8, 14, 292 pp. 8, 332 pp., 9 gefalt. lith. Taf., 2 feine Pappbände frisches Exemplar. Erste Ausgabe eines Grundlagenwerkes der deutschen Orthopädie und der Mechanik des Stehens und Gehens. Das Werk ist vor allem wichtig wegen des vom Verfassers propagierten Zusammenwirkens von Medizin, Physik und Mechanik in der orthopädischen Therapie. Vor dem Hintergrund einer Darstellung der Anatomie und der Bewegung der menschlichen Körpers sowie der auf ihn wirkenden Kräfte (Druck, der Schwere, Zug der Muskeln) werden die Erscheinungsformen der Körperkrümmungen, wie z.B. Nacken-, Schlangen-, Winkel- sowie Beckenkrümmungen, Mißgestaltung der Rippen, des Brustbeins, Schlüsselbeine und Schultern u.a. und die Behandlungsmöglichkeiten durch orthopädische Geräte und Gymnastik dargestellt. Weiter werden Erkrankungen der Knochen, Muskel, Bänder sowie der Glieder, soweit sie orthopädische Krankheiten beeinflussen behandelt. Die fein ausgeführten Tafeln zeigen angehörige verschiedener Berufsgruppen beim Tagen, wie z.B. eine Bäckerin mit Tablett, Wasserträger, Frau mit Krug etc. Sie verdeutlichen die Folgen falsche Tragens bzw. des Übergewichts für die Körperhaltung und illustrierten die im Text gemachten Ausführungen und Funktion und Anwendung der orthopädischen Geräte. Friedrich Wilhelm Heidenreich (1798-1857), 1798 zu Rostall in Mittelfranken geboren, studierte in Würzburg, besuchte Berlin und ließ sich 1824 zu Ansbach nieder, wo er bis zu seinem 1857 erfolgten Tode äußerst segensreich wirkte. Daß er bei seiner umfangreichen Praxis und bei der unermüdeten Sorgfalt, die er jedem seiner Kranken zu Teil werden ließ, noch Muße zu ausgedehnten gründlichen wissenschaftlichen Studien fand, bekundet sein rastloses Streben und seinem nie ermüdenden Geist. Er beschränkte sich dabei nicht bloß auf seine Fachwissenschaft, sondern machte auch in verwandten Disziplinen umfassende Studien, in Geologie, Physik und Chemie. Seine Schriften und seine Leistungen in den von ihm besonders kultivierten Disziplinen sichern ihm in wissenschaftlichen Kreisen ein ehrendes Andenken. Hirsch/H.         The Golden Violet, with its Tales of Romance and Chivalry: and other poems.

      Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green, London., 1827. First edition. 12mo. pp [xii], 310. Engraved frontispiece. Period binding of full russet calf with raised bands, decorations, rules and inner dentelles gilt; marbled edges and endpapers. Binding professionally restored with original spine relaid, retaining the endpapers. Laetitia Elizabeth Landon (1802-1838) was an English poet and novelist who had great success in her day despite being much vilified in the press where she was accused of having affairs and even of secretly bearing children. She broke off her engagement to John Forster (the biographer of Dickens), wanting to spare him the possible stain to his reputation. She later married George Maclean but took her own life by poison very shortly thereafter. Her literary status declined greatly during the twentieth century until such critics as Germaine Greer came to re-assess her work.Double fore-edge painting depicting in watercolour shoreside views of Long Island and Philadelphia. On the front pastedown is the fine pictorial bookplate of Gilbert R. Redgrave who in 1892 published A History of Water-Colour Painting in England, so it is possible that the paintings are his work.The views are quite clear and fresh, with great skill displayed in their detailed renderings. Covers faintly rubbed at the edges. Very good indeed.

        Curtis's Botanical Magazine;

      London: for the proprietor Samuel Curtis, Botanical Magazine Warehouse,, 1827. Or, Flower-Garden Displayed: in which the most ornamental foreign plants, cultivated in the open ground, the green-house, and the stove, are accurately represented in their natural colours ... Vol. I of the new series, or Vol. LIV of the whole work. Octavo (229 x 144 mm). Recent green half morocco, gilt titles and decoration to spine in compartments, marbled paper sides, edges yellow. With 86 hand-coloured plates, 10 of which are folding. Boards slightly bowed, light offsetting from plates; an excellent copy. Volume 54 of Curtis's Botanical Magazine. William Curtis (1746–1799), the botanist and entomologist, published the first volume of The Botanical Magazine in 1787. The periodical intended to provide practical information on the ornamental and exotic plants rapidly becoming popular in Britain. It followed Curtis's well-received, yet financially unsuccessful, work on local plant life, the Flora Londinensis, first published in 1777. When Curtis died in 1799 his friend and fellow botanist, John Sims (1749–1831), took over editorship, changing its name to Curtis's Botanical Magazine. This is the final volume published by Sims; in 1827 editorship was taken over by William Hooker (1785–1865). Curtis's Botanical Magazine is still published today by the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, making it the longest running botanical magazine of its kind in the world. "In the beauty of production and the high standard of its contributions it can claim a unique place" (P. M. Synge).

        Plates as in "Eccentric Tales" from the German of W. F. Von Kosewitz, with Illustrations by Geo. Cruikshank, from (Sketches) by Alfred Crowquill (London: James Robins & Co. 1827)

      None stated nd, None Stated - Dark green 3/4 leather with complementary medium green cloth. Gilt edging, lettering and 3 bands (not raised). AEG. No text. 20 pp, each with an individual bw etching / engraving. With bookplates by prominent people. The title page is hand-lettered, and there is no printed publication information. This is a unique and important item of Cruikshankiana. Ex-library copy with minimally offensive marks, given the importance of each one. This volume contains ONLY the 20 engravings used as illustrations for Eccentric Tales. The original sketches were by Alfred Henry Forrester (under the pseudonym of Alfred Crowquill). The actual book illustrations then were done by George Cruikshank. This particular book contains Forrester's personal book plate. Another book plate is of Albert M. Cohn who wrote a catalogue raisonne of Cruikshank's works in 1924 (a small label on the fep makes reference to this catalogue, #471). And a third book plate is of William Hartman Woodin, Secretary of the Treasury under Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933. The final bookplate present is that of the Brooklyn Public Library. Plates No. 8 and 15 have remarques. The Cruikshank illustrations in Eccentric Tales were, apparently, hand-tinted, but these images are in b/w with no tinting, and appear to be etching proofs for the final illustrations. Both Crowquill's and Cruikshank's names appear under each etching. Delightful and humorous illustrations done in great detail. Unique and rare. Ex-library copy with usual marks. Plates mostly clean, but a few have minor-to-mild foxing. Two plates have perforation stamps on lower margins, not affecting plate images. Front end pages (ffep detached and laid in) contain 2 library plates, 2 personal book plates, and one additional plate. Some wear to spine, mostly at head/tail, and to leather corners, but nothing terribly offensive. Ex-lib. sticker on back cover. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
