Leipzig: Breitkopf & Härtel [PN 4563]. [December 1827]. Oblong folio. Original publisher's blue printed wrappers with decorative ruled border. 1f. (title), 60 pp. Music engraved, title lithographed. Price: "2 Thlr. 16 Gr." Signature in ink to both title and upper wrapper: "Dr. Rust," with additional annotations in ink in Rust's hand: "italienisch" and "NB!!!" to margin. All entrances of soprano soloist marked up in red crayon. Breathing marks to the same part added in pencil (pp. 10, 11, 30). Corrections to engraving errors (pp. 16, 18, 37, 41, 48, 55) and further annotations added in black or blue pencil. Rehearsal numbers to the Kyrie added in pencil. Spine reinforced with black cloth tape; upper wrapper stained and loose, lower slightly defective. Slightly worn; tear to pp. 1/2 extending approximately 80 mm. into printed area; some minor imperfections. . First Edition, first issue. The work was previously published in full score in 1812, also by Breitkopf & Härtel. Kinsky p. 240-41. Not in Hoboken. The word "italienisch" (Italian) on the title page should read "lateinisch" (Latin). The German text, not credited in the edition, is by Christian Schreiber. The addition of a vernacular text underlay - for the most part newly-written poetry without resemblance to the liturgical text - to a Latin mass was fashionable in its time and place, when the Catholic Church opposed performances of liturgical music in concerts and anti-clerical sentiment was strong among intellectuals. The only sections where the German text amounts to a translation of the original concern the Last Judgment in the Credo, the Sanctus, the Osanna, and some passages of the Agnus Dei. All references to Jesus Christ are deleted. Beethoven approved the German text although he was critical of some passages of it. See Kinsky, p. 240, and J. Schmidt-[Görg], "Die deutschen Texte zu Beethovens C-dur Messe," Veröffentlichungen des Beethoven-Hauses 5, Bonn, 1928. "Dr. Rust" is possibly Wilhelm Rust (1822-1892), the composer and scholar known as the editor of 26 volumes of the original Bach-Gesellschaft edition of J.S. Bach's complete works.

Caracas. Feb. 6, 1827.. [2]pp. plus integral blank. Folio. Old fold; slight separation at fold. Light creasing. Very good. In a half morocco box. In this apparently unique broadsheet, Simón Bolivar tenders his resignation as president of Gran Colombia to the Congress in Caracas, Venezuela. By 1827 internal conflicts and political pressures were threatening the stability of the Republic Bolivar had created, Gran Colombia (present-day Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, and parts of Peru). In an attempt to pacify dissenters and preserve the fragile federation, Bolivar addressed the Congress, offering to step aside and assuring the people that he had no plans to declare himself as absolute ruler. In this address Bolivar points to the fact that Gran Colombia is in an advantageous position, recognized by the United States and with Great Britain threatening war with Spain. Despite a rosy outlook, Bolivar notes that suspicions that El Libertador will exert himself as a tyrannical dictator continue to plague the political environment. Thus - in the tradition of George Washington - he is resigning from office. He writes (in translation): "In vain do I invoke the example of Washington to defend myself...." Though he is not innocent of ambition, Bolivar wishes to "remove my fellow citizens from the claws of this fury, and free them from uneasiness." Declaring his renunciation to be irrevocable, he writes: "My sword and my heart will nevertheless be for Colombia; and with my last breath I will ask heaven to grant her happiness." Despite this declaration, the Congress refused to accept Bolivar's resignation. Unable to settle on a new constitution and form of government, the Constitutional Convention of 1828 fell apart and Bolivar proclaimed himself dictator for life on August 27th. Intended to be a temporary measure to stabilize the government, this move resulted in an assassination attempt just a month later. Bolivar died two years later of tuberculosis. Not located in any of the usual sources, including Palau and OCLC. An important piece of South American history.

The Cone of Montmorency of 1827

Quebec 1827 - A fine watercolour of a the frozen falls of the St. Lawrence River by British army officer James Cockburn, a talented artist of Canadian scenery in this early period. British army officer Major-General James Pattison Cockburn (1779-1847) served in Canada from 1822 to 1823, and again from 1826 to 1832. Most of his fine watercolours were made during his second posting, having made several inspection tours in his capacity as commanding officer of the Royal Artillery in Canada, including visits to the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. "Cockburn was a prolific amateur water-colourist, often working with the intent to publish [including several separately issued prints by Ackermann and Co., as well as illustrations in several works] . His artistic endeavours did not go unnoticed by those of his social circle. Lord and Lady Dalhousie were respected patrons of the arts in the colony during his term as Governor-in-Chief of Canada, 1819-28; they acquired at least two albums of Cockburn views. Lady Aylmer, wife of Lord Dalhousie's successor in office, describes Colonel Cockburn as '.one of the most accurate and elegant artists I have ever met" (Cooke). Cockburn would exhibit at the National Academy of Design in 1836. A contemporary of Cockburn described the winter scene on the St. Lawrence depicted here as follows: 'When the river St. Lawrence is frozen below the falls, the level ice becomes a support, on which the freezing spray descends as sleet; it there remains, and gradually enlarges its base and its height, assuming an irregularly conical form, its dimensions thus continually enlarging become, towards the close of the winter, stupendous." The cone became a winter destination for visitors from the city of Quebec, and as the present image shows part of the attraction was that it was possible to climb and slide down the slopes of the cone. See Allodi 401-403 for similar images of this natural wonder. Four Cockburn albums containing over 350 watercolours were dispersed following the April 27, 1926 Murray Sale at Sotheby and Co., and is the source of most extant examples of his work. His watercolours appear in the permanent collections of the Public Archives Canada, the National Gallery Canada, Royal Ontario Museum, Archives Nationales du Quebec, the McCord Museum, British Museum and National Army Museum, among others.         The Tyrant Flycatcher"

London: Robert Havell, Jr., 1827. THE JOVIAL FLYCATCHER Approximate plate size: 39" x 261/2" Approximate frame size: 491/2" x 37" All works are first-edition, aquatint engravings with original hand-color Published in London between 1827 and 1838 by Robert Havell, Jr. "The Tyrant Flycatcher", otherwise known as the Eastern Kingbird, has many detractors, but Audubon was quick to point out its good points, writing: "Man persecutes the Kingbird without mercy... This mortal hatred is occasioned by a propensity which the Tyrant Flycatcher now and then shews to eat a honeybee, which the farmer looks upon as exclusively his own property... Few hawks will venture to approach a farmyard while the Kingbird is near... The many eggs of the poultry which he saves from the plundering crow, the many chickens that are reared under his protection, safe from the clutches of the prowling hawks, the vast number of insects which he devours, and which would otherwise torment the cattle and horses, are benefits conferred by him... and calculated to ensure for him the favor and protection of man." .         The Military Sketch-Book. Reminiscences of seventeen years in the service abroad and at home. By an Officer of the Line

London: Henry Colburn, 1827. Two volumes, octavo, a little foxing yet a lovely set in polished burgundy half calf with gilt lettering by Bayntun. A dark pact between two Bushrangers: Michael Howe and Jack Whitehead. The Military Sketch-Book is an anonymous collection of anecdotes and rambling tales, mostly related to army life and the Peninsular War, from the pen of journalist and satirical writer William Maginn (1793-1842). It contains an arresting - if somewhat romanticised - account of the pursuit of Michael Howe and his dark pact with fellow bushranger Jack Whitehead. The final 54-page chapter concerns the Van Diemen's Land bushrangers. The narrative is supposedly provided by an old soldier, transported long ago following the Nore mutiny. The narrator describes the depredations of a gang of bushrangers, and the formation of a heavily armed party sent into the wilderness to find them. After intensive searching, the men crept upon the bushrangers in dense scrub and found 'a pretty, interesting-looking native girl, sat playing with the long and bushy black ringlets of a stout and wicked looking man seated by her: he had pistols in his belt - wore a fustian jacket, a kangaroo-skin cap and waistcoat, with leather gaiters, and dirty velveteen breeches. I saw him plainly as I see any one here; and what do you think? The fellow had two watches in his fob! This turned out, as I learned afterwards, to be Michael Howe, the second in command of the robbers…'. Three of the narrators party were killed in the ensuing gunfight, and Howe and Whitehead swore their vengeance upon Mr. M'Carthy, the leader of the posse. Upon returning to his remote farmhouse, M'Carthy had men of the 46th regiment stationed on the property. When the bushrangers returned for their revenge they were outmanned and outgunned. The narrator recounts shooting a man in the darkness, and shortly afterwards ambushing another of the bushrangers in the act of stripping the corpse - only to find it was Howe himself decapitating Jack Whitehead in accordance with a dark pact between the rogues. He writes 'I was petrified with astonishment; so Howe got off, and left the mutilated trunk in a pool of blood'. Sensational accounts of bushranging such as this example played on the deepest fears of British readers and informed the popular perception of Australia as a wild and lawless outpost.

Additional Remarks on Active Molecules" in The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, 6, 1829, pp. 161-166

FIRST EDITION of the second paper Robert Brown wrote on the subject of Brownian motion, the random motion of microscopic particles suspended in a liquid. Brownian motion is sometimes referred to as particle theory. In this paper, Brown discusses the observations of others, describes additional observations that eliminate several other possible causes of the motion, and responds to comments on his earlier paper; also included is a brief description of confirmatory experiments by Holland. The modern history of Brownian motion began in 1827 when Brown observed a continuous jittery motion of pollen grains in water through a microscope and wrote analytically about the phenomenon. He "saw that pollen grains of the herb Clarkia pulchella, while suspended in liquid, engaged in a continuous, haphazard, zig-zag movement" (Printing and the Mind of Man, 290). Based on his surprise at what he found, in this second paper "he continued experiments with other substances -- including inanimate bodies such as minerals and smoke -- and found that when the particles were very small, they all possessed this same motion" (ibid). This observation allowed Brown to rule out the hypothesis that the motion was due to the pollen being alive. The discovery of the physical process and subsequent mathematical explanations of Brownian motion "provided the first conclusive proof of the existence of atoms and molecules" (Wenner Collection). CONDITION & DETAILS: (8.5 x 5.5 inches; 213 x 138mm). [6], 472, [viii], 4. Brown paper: pp. 161-166. Ex-libris bearing only a small paper label at the spine and a discreet stamp on the title page. Bound in three quarter polished black calf over marbled paper boards. GIlt-ruled and lettered at the spine. Minor rubbing and scuffing; tightly and solidly bound. Slight age toning and foxing. Very good condition.

Additional Remarks on Active Molecules" in The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, 6, 1829, pp. 161-166.

      - FIRST EDITION of the second paper Robert Brown wrote on the subject of Brownian motion, the random motion of microscopic particles suspended in a liquid. View of Edinburgh, From the Castle

William Fletcher, Edinburgh 1827 - Aquatint, printed in colours and finished by hand, by Robert Havell Jr. (Expertly repaired tear). An expertly fashioned view of Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth, aquatinted by Audubon's printer: Robert Havell. Edmund Thornton Crawford was a Scottish seascape and landscape painter. He was initially apprenticed to an artisan painter but later studied at the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh under Andrew Wilson. In 1831 he paid the first of many visits to Holland to study the 17th century Dutch masters. The influence of Van de Velde in seascapes and Hobbema in landscapes is evident in his later work. There are elements in the present image which are also reminiscent of the work of Patrick Nasmyth. A contemporary gazetteer notes that 'Edinburgh presents, from almost every point of view whence it can be viewed such scenic and architectural groupings as are perhaps unrivalled in any existing city in the world. It possesses attractions peculiarly its own, and fixes the gaze and challenges the admiration of a spectator by displays of general excellence, unaided by the sumptuousness of any one object, and undergraded by the deteriorations from its prevailing style of magnificence.' (Fullarton [publishers] A Gazetteer of the World 1856, III, p.140).

Table of the Logarithms of Sines and Tangents ... and of the Sines, Cosines ... of the Quadrant

Paris: Firmin Didot, 1827 First Edition . A very good copy; orig. spine laid down; unopened. 8vo.,. ; title, [ 372 ] pp.[ printed on yellow paper ]. Callet's logarithmic tables were generally regarded as being the most accurate ever produced to that date. This volume was printed for Babbage as an accompaniment to the first editon of his own issue of logarithmic tables in 1827. Henderson points out that this volume of Callet was printed by Didot on the special yellow buff paper to match the Babbage volume. Van Sinderen points out that Babbage wanted to produce a set of tables without error and that Callet was one of Babbage's original and acknowledged sources. The set of tables offered here, providing trigonometrical functions, was taken en bloc from Callet. A superb artifact of the history of computing and printing.

The Military Sketch-Book. Reminiscences of seventeen years in the service abroad and at home. By an Officer of the Line

Henry Colburn, London 1827 - Two volumes, octavo, a little foxing yet a lovely set in polished burgundy half calf with gilt lettering by Bayntun. This turned out, as I learned afterwards, to be Michael Howe, the second in command of the robbers?'. Atlas Universel de Géographie. Physique, Politique, Statistique et Minéralogique... Sixième Partie - Océanique

Brussels: Lithographed by H. Ode, 1827. Portfolio, comprising letterpress title-page, key map of the region and 60 numbered lithographic maps measuring 530 x 685 mm.; a fine set with expert contemporary handcolouring, preserved in a contemporary folding case of half diced russia with marbled boards and gilt lettering. A globe over seven meters in diameter. A milestone of modern scientific cartography: this is the final volume, comprising Australia, New Zealand and Oceania, of the pioneering large-scale atlas produced by Philippe Vandermaelen, founder of the Etablissement Géographique in Brussels. The atlas is remarkable on several counts, not least its extraordinary scale of 26 miles to the inch. For the first time remote and inaccessible areas of the globe were mapped on a generous uniform scale, reflecting the objective spirit of scientific cartography then superseding the Eurocentric models of the eighteenth century. The atlas was printed lithographically, the happy outcome of a fruitful collaboration between Vandermaelen and master lithographer Henri Ode. Perhaps the most extraordinary aspect of the atlas was its potential to be formed into an enormous globe with a diameter exceeding seven meters. Indeed, one complete globe was assembled for public display at the Etablissement Géographique in Brussels. The attention to detail - and considerable challenges posed by the lithographic process - are evident in this volume dedicated to Australia and the Pacific. Although some areas remain uncharted, the sixty maps here included reflect a fastidious collation of information from myriad voyage accounts.

Being acquainted with Colbert, he became one of Louis XIV's primary assistants in the designing and decorating of Versailles and other royal building projects. He also wrote an essay on physiognomy: an edition was published in 1827 ("Dissertation sur un trait? de Charles Le Brun concernant le rapport de la physionomie humaine avec celle des animaux"). The present image is from this edition, which included lithographic plates printed by Engelmann Graf Coindet & Co. after various artists.
