Paris 1827 - Pierre Joseph Redoute (1759-1840) Illustrated sheet from Choix des Plus Belles Fleurs Paris: 1827-1833 Hand-colored stipple engraving Sheet size: 12 1/2" x 9 3/4" The works of the great botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redoute (1759-1840) seem to demand the invention of lofty praise. Described both as the “Rembrandt” and the “Raphael” of Flowers by nineteenth century writers, Redoute occupies a central position in the development of European botanical art. Born into a family of artists, Redoute’s talents were recognized and encouraged from an early age. He studied botany with the noted naturalist Heritier de Brutelle, and learned the technique of painting in watercolor on vellum from Gerard van Spaendonck, Flower Painter to the King. By this master painter’s own account, his pupil’s work was finer. Redoute had, as pupils or patrons, five queens and empresses of France, from Marie Antoinette to Empress Josephine and her successor, Marie-Louise. Despite many changes of regime in this turbulent epoch, he worked without interruption, eventually contributing to over fifty books on natural history and archeology. The luminosity of stipple engraving is particularly suited to the reproduction of botanical detail. It is essentially a technique of etching a copper plate with a dense grid of dots that can be modulateto convey delicate gradations of color and tone. The plates were painted with watercolor before each impression, creating a rich and subtle color quality that is deeply pressed into the paper. The most delicate highlights and details are then added by hand to finish each print according to the exquisite watercolor models that Redoute provided. This complex and delicate printing process combines the technical virtuosity and aesthetic sensitivity that characterize Redoute’s remarkable body of work.

Milan - Aquatint engraving with original hand color. Ca. 1827. Sheet size: 15 x 18 1/4". Inventory#: p507pmat. "Scena esequita pel Ballo tragico Maria Stuarda, composto dal Sig. Gio. Galzerani, nell'I. R. Teatro alla Scala in Milano. Il Carnevale dell'anno 1826." As opera reached a height of popularity and innovation in early 19th-century Italy, stage sets and scenery were increasingly viewed as art forms unto themselves. Enterprising artists and designers competed to create the most lavish, evocative, and visually engaging opera settings, and were so successful that their stage sets often competed with the performances themselves for an audience's attention and appreciation. Public criticism of various operas often revolved as much around the quality of the set designs as the beauty of the music, and audiences became increasingly discerning about the visual aspects of grand performances. Reflecting this tendency, Alessandro Sanquirico, a Milanese artist, was inspired to document the most striking sets at Italy's most celebrated opera house, La Scala in Milan. Sanquirico's vividly colored, masterfully drafted aquatint engravings capture the sumptuousness and sheer spectacle of these extravagant sets, often including costumed singers in the midst of a concert, and at the same time the artist brings the excitement of the performance to life in these remarkably vibrant illustrations. 0

- "The subsequent terminology or separation of the specific types of epilepsy developed gradually in the Nineteenth Century. J.E. Esquirol, psychiatrist at the Salpetriere, wrote in 1815 that attacks alternate in intensity and that there are severe or slight attacks which he (1838) called "le grand mal" and "le petit mal". The expedition was under the aegis of the King of Bavaria, Maximilian Joseph I. 'His plans for sending scientific explorers to South America were realized in 1817, when an Austrian expedition was sent to Brazil. Martius and several other Bavarian scientists, including his companion, the zoologist Spix, went along. They left Trieste on 2 April 1817 and returned to Munich in December 1820' (DSB).//'Spix and Martius were the first European scientists to visit the Amazon after La Condamine. Their collections ... provided material for a vast number of works by other scientists. Spix himself was occupied entirely with publishing his findings after his return to Munich... Weakened by the fevers that he had suffered on his voyage, he died [in 1826], leaving other zoologists, including Louis Agassiz, to complete the publication of his works' (ibid.). /For this volume the descriptions were provided by J.A. Wagner. It was edited by Paula von Schrank and Martius.//Borba de Moraes II 280; Nissen ZBI, 3954.

The Rht. Honble. George Pitt Lord Rivers

London: Published by M. Colnaghi, 23 Cockspur Street, 1827. Mezzotint. Printed on wove paper. In good condition with the exception of some surface soiling in the margins. Crease within center of image. Mended tear on top margin not extending into image. Mended tear on right margin. Fold along bottom margin. Image size: 15 7/8 x 13 inches. A remarkable portrait by James Agasse of his patron George Pitt, the second Baron Rivers, with his two prized greyhounds. James Laurent Agasse was a noted animal and landscape painter who worked in London at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Agasse was born in Geneva and received his first artistic training there. In 1800 he settled in London at the invitation of his patron the Hon. George Pitt, the second Baron Rivers. While in London he painted a number of fine equestrian and greyhound portraits for Pitt, including this portrait, which is noted as one of his most successful paintings. His devotion to the study of anatomy and his meticulous painting style made him a huge success in England, and he was widely recognized as one of the most adept animal painters of his day. He was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy between 1801 and 1845, and this distinguished portrait is a wonderful example of his skillful painting and meticulous anatomical observation. Quoted in the Dictionary of National Biography , the writer of the panegyric states, "that it was not for bread or for grain that he laboured, but that he was urged forward by the resistless force of natural genius." O'Donoghue, Catalogue of Engraved British the British Museum 1; Lane Sporting Aquatints and their engravers 72-73; Dictionary of National Biography.

Valentin, gesch. Orth., p.55, 200 - - "The early decades of the 19th century were marked by a rash of orthopaedic institutes in France. One such was founded in Paris in 1823 by Guillaume Jalade-Lafond, deviser of an "extension chair" (Streckstühle "Fauteuil oscillatoire") and "oscillatory bed" (Streckbett "Lit extenseur oscillatoire") with which he even attempted reduction of congenital hip dislocation. The gardens of his institute at Chaillot abounded with elegantly clad maidens engaged in varied gymnastic activities. Lafond took his son-in-law, Vincent Duval into partnership. Duval gained a reputation for his treatment of club-foot, on which he wrote a treatise, and it was this treatise that the novelist Gustave Flaubert consulted when he was planning for his character, Doctor Bovary, to perform an ill-fated section of the Achilles tendon. Towards of the end of the century, Duval's son Emile produced his own book on the subject." David LeVay, Hist. Orthop., pp.253-254 - Very Rare! Wellcome III, p.342 (Vol. iii and plates are missing); not in Osler, Waller, Cushing. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
