        Two Bound Volumes of The Saturday Evening Post containing "Enigma" and "Psalm 139th" [Volume 6, 1827] and "The School of Flora" [a series of illustrated botanical sketches in Volumes 6 and 7: 1827-1828]

      Philadelphia: Atkinson & Alexander; Samuel Coate Atkinson. 1827, 1828. First. Elephant folios. Two bound volumes of this weekly Philadelphia newspaper for the years 1827 and 1828. Volume 6: Whole Nos. 284-335 (January 6th-December 29th, 1827). Lacks the issue of January 20th, else complete. Contemporary three quarter dark red morocco and marbled paper boards. Scuffing to the leather, a bump to the top right corner of the text pages, moderate scattered foxing and some staining, overall good or better. Volume 7: Whole Nos. 336-387 (January 5th-December 27th, 1828). Complete. Full dark blue cloth, gilt spine title. Ex-library, with a bookplate on the front pastedown. Moderate scattered foxing and toning throughout, issue no. 354 detached with scattered small tears along the foredge, else very good. Each weekly issue consists of four pages. The Post was founded in 1821, and traces its roots back to Benjamin Franklin's Pennsylvania Gazette. Volume 6 (1827) contains the first printed appearance in the March 10th issue of the puzzle poem "Enigma," attributed to Edgar Allan Poe, and "Psalm 139th," published by Poe's older brother William Henry Poe in the February 3rd issue. Volume 6 and the accompanying Volume 7 for 1828 are also notable for the numerous articles by Philadelphia's famous polymath Constantine Samuel Rafinesque. Like Poe, he was recognized by his peers as an eccentric genius. Rafinesque made important contributions to botany, philology, and natural history. He published more than 6,700 binomial names of plants, and his theory relating to the gradual evolution of differing plant species through minute changes in response to environmental stimuli was acknowledged by Darwin. His series of illustrated botanical sketches, The School of Flora, first appeared in the January 6th issue of 1827. A total of 42 sketches were published that year in the weekly issues through January 5th, 1828. A new series commenced in the January 19th issue of 1828, with a total of 22 sketches published in weekly issues throughout 1828. A scarce set, featuring two early items of Poeana, and the first printed appearances of extensive contributions by Rafinesque. Further details available upon request. .

        Diritto Romano ad uso di Gio. Battista Speroni. 1827.

      - Due volumi di cm. 28,5, pp. 481; 706 (1) (14). Solida ed elegante legatura coeva in mezza pelle, dorsi lisci con fregi e titoli in oro su tasselli. Ottima conservazione ed in grafia abbastanza leggibile. Si tratta di un manoscritto ad uso dello studente G.B. Speroni che riporta l'intero corso di Diritto Romano svolto all'Università di Pavia nell'anno accademico 1826-27. Il nome del professore appare stampato ai dorsi e si tratta sicuramente di Ignazio Beretta (1779 – 1847) il quale, dopo aver ricoperto per supplenza diverse cattedre, si insedia stabilmente in quella di Diritto romano combinato con l'antico statutario e diritto feudale, conservandone la titolarità sino al giorno della sua morte, il 27 giugno 1847. E' interessante notare come in questo periodo l'insegnamento universitario venisse strettamente controllato dall'Aulica Commissione di Vienna che imponeva il rispetto dell'ABGB (Österreich Allgemeines Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch). Molti insegnanti cercavano di svincolarsi da tali imposizioni. Al Beretta, prediletto dalle autorità per l'illibatezza dei costumi, fu consentito nel magistero di diritto romano di adottare le Leggi civili di Domat, nella traduzione di Padovani. Egli stesso, però, durante le lezioni del 1826-27, indica ai propri studenti quale giurista di riferimento per lo studio del diritto romano, oltre all'approvato Domat, il piemontese Richeri, contravvenendo probabilmente agli ordini superiori. Nelle sue lezioni richiama il diritto romano continuando quell'impostazione comparatistica che in età napoleonica aveva fin da subito caratterizzato la prima esperienza di insegnamento del codice civile. Giardini prima di lui aveva insegnato i Paratitla in Codicem Civilem Austriacum. In sostanza si può affermare che il periodo d'insegnamento di Ignazio Beretta marca il passaggio fra l'insegnamento del diritto romano con il nuovo diritto civile dei codici. Cfr.       J. Carpenter, [London 1827 - This plate, from Charles Le Brun's study of human types and animals, a collection of goat, sheep and ram eyes, was intended to show stupidity as demonstrated by the eye Charles Le Brun (1619-1690) was a painter, architect, designer and author. He studied with Vouet and Poussin. Being acquainted with Colbert, he became one of Louis XIV's primary assistants in the designing and decorating of Versailles and other royal building projects. He also wrote an essay on physiognomy: an edition was published in 1827 ("Dissertation sur un traité de Charles Le Brun concernant le rapport de la physionomie humaine avec celle des animaux"). The present image is from this edition, which included lithographic plates printed by Engelmann Graf Coindet & Co. after various artists. Tome premier,’ general title slightly soiled and slightly damp-stained, a few spots here and there and an occasional patch of light browning, pp. [599-]799; 6-312; the entire vol. [viii, including half-title and initial blank used as pastedown], 799, 4to, uncut and unopened in the original paper wrappers, slightly worn with spine partly defective at head and tail, good ‘Cauchy’s memoir of 1814 on definite integrals with complex-number limits inaugurated his great career as the independent creator and unequalled developer of the theory of functions of a complex variable . [this] luxuriantly detailed memoir was published only in 1827. The delay was possibly due to its length . Cauchy thought nothing of hurling massive works of from 80 to 300 pages at the Academy or the Polytechnique to be printed out of their stinted funds . As if to show that he was not limited to first-rate work in pure mathematics Cauchy next captured the Grand Prize offered by the Academy in 1816 for a "theory of the propagation of waves on the surface of a heavy fluid of indefinite depth" - ocean waves are close enough to this type for mathematical treatment’ (Ball, Men of Mathematics, pp. 321-22). ‘His results are now classics in hydrodynamics’ (DSB).Sandwiched between Cauchy’s papers is Damioseau’s Mémoire sur la théorie de la lune - no squib either at some 200 pages. There is a crater on the moon named after him.

        The Tales of Peter Parley About America

      Boston: S.G. Goodrich, 1827. First edition. original quarter sheep (roan) and slate boards, spine ruled (12 bands) and lettered in gilt. Housed in custom full green morocco clamshell box, with full cloth chemise. Covers rubbed and a little browned, corners worn, light to moderately heavy foxing throughout. Top of title page excised from 7/8 to one inch above the word ?Tales?, resulting in loss of the word ?The?. The following leaf containing the Preface, excised 1/4 inch from top with no loss of text. Both excisions seem to have been undertaken to remove an inked notation, scant traces of which remain, probably initials or a name. In spite of the above imperfections, this copy would seem to be equal or superior to most of the other known copies. The collation given in Peter Parley to Penrod ends at page 142. In our copy, the last page 144 is mis-numbered 142 i.e. the pagination being 141-142-143-142. There are a very few marginal tears, not affecting text. The last leaf -pages 143-142 [sic]- has a tiny hole which obliterates the letter ?G? in George . 12mo (5-3/8 x 4-1/8 inches; 132 x 105 mm). Illustrated with 36 wood engravings on 32 plates (complete) by Alonso Hartwell, J.W. Barber, and others with: The Tales of Peter Parley about Europe. Boston: S. G. Goodrich, 1828. Illustrated with engravings. 136 pages. complete with half title. 12mo, (5-3/8 x 4-1/4 inches; 136 x 107 mm.), original black sheep backed blue boards, spine ruled (12 bands) and lettered in gilt. Covers a little worn. ?The Tales of Peter Parley about America having been well received, the author of that little book offers the present ?Tales About Europe,? in the hope that it may be found still more useful in the cause of education than the former work ... ? - from the Preface dated May1, 1828. This sequel is perhaps as rare as its celebrated predecessor of the preceding year. [Shoemaker American Imprints 1820 - 1829, #33391 (locating but 4 copies)] One of the great rarities of children?s literature. Samuel Griswold Goodrich (1793 - 1860) was highly respected in his time as can be seen from his obituary published in The New York Times 11 May, 1860: ?We deeply regret that we are obliged to announce the death of Mr. S.G. Goodrich, more widely known as "Peter Parley," -- the pseudonym under which he acquired his reputation. He died very suddenly, at his residence in Ninth-street, of disease of the heart. Mr. Goodrich was a native of Connecticut, and was born in 1793, -- though no one would have judged from his appearance that he was so nearly seventy years old. He had a vigorous constitution, which he preserved to the last by care and regularity in his mode of life. He began life as a publisher, first in Hartford and afterwards in Boston, -- and edited in the days of Annuals one of the most celebrated of them, The Token, from 1828 to 1842, to which he was a frequent contributor both in prose and verse. [The Token also contained some of the earliest work of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Nathaniel Parker Willis, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Lydia Maria Child.] His greatest success, however, was achieved in compiling books for children, -- designed to convey instruction in natural history, travels, biography, and various branches of science and art, by simply-written narratives and anecdotes, copiously illustrated by engravings. He wrote as "Peter Parley" telling stories to children, and for many years the series of works thus published, extending to over forty volumes, had an enormous circulation, both in this country and abroad. They introduced a class of books which have since become universal. Mr. Goodrich was appointed American Consul at Paris under Mr. Fillmore, and held that office for several years. He performed its duties with great fidelity, and enjoyed the respect and esteem of all with whom he came in contact.? On the publishing of this work: "Though I was busily engaged in publishing various works, I found time to make my long meditated experiment in the writing of books for children. The first attempt was made in 1827, and bore the title of the Tales of Peter Parley about America. No persons but my wife and one of my sisters were admitted to the secret ?"for in the first place, I hesitated to believe that I was qualified to appear before the public as an author, and in the next place, nursery literature had not then acquired the respect in the eyes of the world it now enjoys. ... I published my little book, and let it make its way. It came before the world untrumpeted, and for some months seemed not to attract the slightest attention. Suddenly I began to see notices of it in the papers, all over the country, and in a year from the date of its publication, it had become a favorite." (Recollections, vol 2, p. 279) The Tales of Peter Parley About America was the initial entry in Jacob Blanck?s Peter Parley to Penrod. A Bibliographical Description of the Best-Loved American Juvenile Books. (New York: R.R. Bowker, 1938). Blanck could only locate one copy, rebound, at Harvard University. The 1954 Pierpoint Morgan catalogue of Children?s Literature added to this the Barrett copy at the University of Virginia. Today, OCLC locates an additional five copies (Library of Congress, Yale University Library, Amherst College, Princeton University and Free Library of Philadelphia). Additionally, the American Antiquarian Society holds a defective copy. In the trade during the last thirty years four copies have sold at auction: 1. Sotheby Parke Bernet, 28 February, 1974, lot 692. Half sheep, rubbed, spine defective, binding cracked, foxed. $2,750.00 2. Sotheby London, 2 June, 1982, lot 75 the Oppenheimer copy, original half leather, joints repaired, stained title page and preface repaired. £2,420 ($4,235-4,464) 3. Swann, 29 April, 1992, lot 186 the Epstein copy, quarter sheep, original boards. Worn with covers detached, endpapers detached and childish scrawl in brown ink, some scattered dampstaining and browning to text, a few minor marginal chips or short tears. $13,200 4. Sotheby New York, June 1, 1995, lot 45, slateblue boards backed with red sheep. Some foxing, soiling, and staining, rubbed, front joint chipped with loss. $14,950 5. To those can be added the incomplete Mildred Greenhill-H. Bradley Martin copy. The H. Bradley Martin sale, Sotheby?s New York, January 30-31, 1990. This lacked four pages of text as well as one of the illustrations. Original half roan boards, slightly worn. It did not sell.       Jan Christian Sepp 1827 - Cornelius Nozeman (1712-86) Illustrated plate from Nederlandsche Vogelen Amsterdam: Jan Christian Sepp, 1770-1827 Hand-colored copperplate engraving Sheet size: 20.5" x 14.5" Nederlandsche Vogelen was the first comprehensive account of the avifauna of Holland. The plates depict all species known in the Netherlands at the time of publication. The plates frequently feature eggs and nests; a few are dedicated entirely to these subjects. The text was written by Cornelius Nozeman, a pastor who owned a cabinet of natural history specimens, and on his death, the work was taken over by Dr. Martinus Houttuyn (1720-1798). When he too died, the enterprise was continued probably by the publishers with the assistance of C.J. Temminck, to whom many of the specimens featured in the last two parts of the work belonged. Anker’s definitive catalogue of bird books praises the Nozeman publication for depicting the birds “in their natural surroundings and as far as possible in their natural attitudes.” Another major critic, Sacheverell Sitwell, calls this “an ornament to the ago of Rococo.”

        Bell's Life in London, and Sporting Chronicle; Combining, with the News of the Week, A rich Repository of Fashion Wit and Humour and the Interesting Incidents of Real Life

      London: Published at Four O'Clock Every Saturday Afternoon by Messrs. Smith's, 192, Strand, London, Ca 1827 - Bell's Life in London was a rival to Pierce Egan's Life in London and Sporting Guide, an offshoot of his highly successful book. Egan began his periodical in 1824 as a Sunday weekly, and in 1826 asked Cruikshank to design some wood engravings to head the paper's regular features, which increased its circulation. Some Cruikshank designs were subsequently used, without the artist's consent, by Bell's paper, and in 1827 Egan, unable to achieve the success of his competitor, sold out to Bell, who merged the two journals into one. Bell's was a conspicuous success: it sold as many as sixteen thousand copies weekly to the poorest classes. This advertisement, in addition to its lively cover of over twenty woodcuts, features a number of poetical effusions to Royalty, the Nobility, Members of Parliament, the Clergy, the Army and Navy, the Commercial, Agricultural and Theatrical Worlds, and, of course, Sportsmen of Every Degree The advertisement is not a part of Bell's periodical, but was a separately issued publication to promote circulation Folio. A four-page advertisement for Bell's paper, printed on two conjugate leaves by B. Bensley, Bolt Court, Fleet Street.         Group of Four Autograph Letters Signed by the Marquis de Lafayette, written from La Grange 1822 ¿ 1824, plus two letters by his son Georges Washington Lafayette, 1823 and 1827

      - small quarto and quarto, 6 letters, 9 pages, in very good, very clean and legible condition. An interesting collection of letters by Lafayette and his son, who was sent to America during the French Revolution as a ward of George Washington, discussing political matters and Lafayette¿s financial affairs in his later days, dating from a period bracketing his triumphal tour in America. They were all presumably written to a Monsieur Degas, several are addressed directly to him. ¿During the Restoration era (1815-1830), Lafayette served several terms in the Chamber of Deputies, opposing Bourbon policy and citing American political principles and the American experience as a model for France. Chateau La Grange, his home some forty miles southeast of Paris, became a mecca for Americans, while at the same time it was often a refuge for exiled revolutionaries from other European states, for Lafayette was supporting liberal revolutions wherever they occurred, from Poland to Latin America. After President James Monroe invited him to visit the United States, Lafayette toured every state of the union in 1824-1825. He daily received tumultuous welcomes as a hero of the American Revolution, who for a half-century had advocated the principles of the American republic and of its patriarch, Washington, and who had never faltered in his devotion to or faith in the cause of human liberty. During the next decade scores of counties, cities, and other public places were named for him or for his estate at La Grange. During the French Revolution of 1830, Lafayette once more became head of the national guard. Again he sought to maintain order and peace while a constitutional regime was created. He supported Louis Philippe because the Orleans line seemed to promise ¿a monarchy with republican institutions,¿ but the performance belied the promise. Lafayette was still in opposition when he died, having spent nearly sixty years of his life as a public figure, always identified with the example of America as a free and prosperous republic.¿ ¿ ANB. 1.       No place, 30. XII. 1827. - 4to. 20 pp. on sewn double leaves. To Philip Henry, 4th Earl Stanhope (1781-1855, later custodian of Kaspar Hauser), discussing the political situation in Europe after the Battle of Navarino, which led to Greek independence from Ottoman rule. Gentz, no disciple of Philhellenism, anticipates the importance of the Battle's outcome for the European balance of powers and deplores the roles played by the political forces of the Great Powers. Gentz writes to the Earl, whose enthusiasm for all things German irritated his English countrymen, in German, penning only a draft and leaving the fair copy to his secretary, as he assumes his own handwriting might pose a problem to the unaccustomed reader: "[.] Ich laße diesen Brief durch eine fremde, aber vollkommen sichre Hand schreiben, weil ich einmal weiß, daß deutsche Briefe Ihnen die liebsten sind, und doch besorge, daß Sie meine Hand mit etwas mehr Anstrengung als eine Kanzley-Schrift lesen möchten [.] Sie kehren, Mein Verehrter Lord, in einem höchst entscheidenden Augenblicke in Ihr Vaterland zurück. Nach allem, was sich in den letzten vier oder sechs Wochen in England zugetragen hat, scheint mir eine Ministerial-Revoluzion unvermeidlich. Die öffentliche Meynung spricht sich täglich stärker und drohender über das Attentat von Navarin, den Traktat von London, und die ganze verderbliche Politik, die diesen Traktat erzeugt hat, aus [.] Das alles hat in den letzten vier Wochen eine andre Gestalt angenommen. It cannot be [.]". - An extensive letter draft with numerous autograph insertions, deletions, and changes. Later publication note by a different hand (c. 1870) at the top of f. 1r; a quote which Gentz omitted from the letter (obviously intending his secretary to supply the text) bears the later editor's pencil note: "Die Stelle fehlt". - Highly characteristic document of Gentz's judgment of the European situation at the moment of the birth of modern Greece: one of the most talented statesmen of his time proves great skill in appraising the political results for the Great Powers; at the same time, the letter gives evidence that a visionary evaluation of the Greek cause, so highly regarded by many contemporaries, was beyond Gentz's capacity or inclination.       New Haven: Published by N. & S.S. Jocelyn. 1827. Blank book. Quarter leather and marbled papercovered boards with red morocco label gilt on front board, small label on the front pastedown of Durrie & Peck: New Haven binders, stationers, and blank book manufacturers. Re-spined, edgewear, else a very good copy. Handwritten name of J.W. (James Woods) McLane on label on front board. McLane was born in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1801. He made a 1000 mile trip on horseback in order to attend Phillips Academy, Andover, graduated from Yale in 1829, and then from the Andover Theological Seminary in 1835. He rose to prominence, and was the first Minister of the Madison Street Presbyterian Church in New York City. In 1852 he was named Chairman of the important Commission on the modernization of the authorized version of the King James Bible for the American Bible Society. He also served as Director of the Union Theological Seminary. He died in New York in 1864. His daughter, Ann Richards McLane, was a noted American artist. This blank book was kept as an autograph book starting in 1827 while McLane was a student at Yale. He has Signed the book on the second leaf: "James W. McLane. Yale College. July 4th, 1827." Over the next two years, McLane collected autograph contributions from 62 of his classmates, or from the two classes immediately preceding his. Although a few of the contributions are mere sentiments, most are relatively substantial contributions consisting of one or more pages of occasionally thoughtful reminiscences or statements of belief or purpose. Many of the contributors were future clergymen, among their member are several of the influential "Illinois Band" of clergyman. Further details available upon request. .

      Paris 1827 - The works of the great botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redoute (1759-1840) seem to demand the invention of lofty praise. Described both as the “Rembrandt” and the “Raphael” of Flowers by nineteenth century writers, Redoute occupies a central position in the development of European botanical art. Born into a family of artists, Redoute's talents were recognized and encouraged from an early age. He studied botany with the noted naturalist Heritier de Brutelle, and learned the technique of painting in watercolor on vellum from Gerard van Spaendonck, Flower Painter to the King. By this master painter's own account, his pupil's work was finer. Redoute had, as pupils or patrons, five queens and empresses of France, from Marie Antoinette to Empress Josephine and her successor, Marie-Louise. Despite many changes of regime in this turbulent epoch, he worked without interruption, eventually contributing to over fifty books on natural history and archeology. The luminosity of stipple engraving is particularly suited to the reproduction of botanical detail. It is essentially a technique of etching a copper plate with a dense grid of dots that can be modulated to convey delicate gradations of color and tone. The plates were painted with watercolor before each impression, creating a rich and subtle color quality that is deeply pressed into the paper. The most delicate highlights and details are then added by hand to finish each print according to the exquisite watercolor models that Redoute provided. This complex and delicate printing process combines the technical virtuosity and aesthetic sensitivity that characterize Redoute's remarkable body of work. The Choix des Plus Belles Fleurs is one of Redoute's last, and most personal works. It is a selection of favorite flowers and fruits by a master who had devoted a lifetime to the art of botanical illustration. The images include spectacular blossoms plucked from formal gardens, as well as the more modest blooms of wayside flowers. These small and richly colored plates convey an intimate sense of beauty that sets them apart from other botanical works.

According to Campbell there were two issues of the Imperial Quarto Edition: "(2) Imperial Quarto Edition, measuring 10 7/8 x 15 1/4 in., with fully lettered prints from the larger set of plates, at £10 16s.(3) Imperial Quarto Edition, measuring 10 7/8 x 15 1/4 in., containing lettered proofs of the smaller set of the engravings: limited to 50 copies, at 12 guineas for the complete publication." Thus even though the images were smaller, this edition was more expensive upon publication. Campbell states "only three copies of the Imperial Quarto edition containing proofs from the smaller set of engravings are now known" (this was in 1992). Two volumes bound in one. Large quarto (14 3/8 x 10 1/2 inches; 366 x 268 mm.). [4], 228; [2], 218 pp. Twenty-four mezzotint plates in the smaller format (image size: 8 x 5 1/2 inches), with tissue guards. Contemporary burgundy pebble-grain morocco. Covers decoratively paneled in gilt, spines paneled and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt spine bands, gilt board edges, wide gilt-tooled dentelles, marbled endpapers and doublures, all edges gilt. Some light foxing (mainly to the plate margins and prelims). An excellent copy of this scarce edition. "This book was one of the great publishing enterprises of the age. It appeared in eight different formats, four with the large plates (8 by 11 inches) and four with the small (6 by 8 inches). Martin executed the forty-eight mezzotints himself. The apocalyptic romanticism of his conceptions had many sources: the monumental buildings of London, the engravings of Piranesi, published volumes of eastern views, even incandescent gas, coalpit accidents, and Brunel’s new Thames Tunnel. The resulting illustrations may be heterogeneous, but they are also unforgettable" (Ray). "Martin’s illustrations to John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost represent a turning point in his career. The vast majority of Martin’s most famous works.were based upon either Miltonic or biblical subject matter—the Paradise Lost series are of particular importance both as one of his chief bodies of designs and as the focal point for the beginning of his career as a mezzotint engraver. Begun by early 1824, this series of engravings was the result of a commission from a little known American publisher, names Septimus Prowett. Prowett, who was based in London, approached Martin to produce 24 mezzotint illustrations.to accompany an issue of Milton’s text which was to be produced in twelve parts.To appreciate the impact which Martin’s designs had upon his public, one must realize the extent to which these extraordinary visions represented an entirely new conception of approach to the art of illustration. Not only were they ‘original’ in the truest sense of the word—designed directly on the plates without the aid of preparatory sketches, they were some of the earliest mezzotints to have been made using soft steel rather than copper, and they were the first illustrations of Milton’s epic work to have been made in the mezzotint medium.The greatest significance of Martin’s illustrations, however, was in their spectacular visionary content.Martin laid before his public the spectacular settings of the epic tale—the open voids of the Creation, the vast vaulted caverns of Hell vanishing into the utter blackness of Chaos, the daunting scale of the city of Pandemonium, and the sweeping beauty f Heaven itself.
