NOTES &c.OF THE PRACTICAL DUTIES OF A STAFF OFFICER [manuscript title].

Gibraltar. . 1827 - [108,1]pp. including forty-eight illustrations (most done in watercolor). 12mo. Original three quarter red calf and marbled boards. Binding rubbed and worn. Front free endpapers detached. Some foxing, lower portion of page 33-34 with a repaired tear, with no loss of text or illustration. Overall, very good. A marvelous illustrated manuscript detailing the duties and activities of a staff officer in the British Infantry, illustrated with dozens of watercolors of cannons, carriages, bridges and fortifications. It takes the form of an instructional manual, with direct and clear instructions, and is illustrated with quite expert drawings, most of them done in watercolor. The volume most clearly resembles a manuscript prepared for publication - it does not appear to have been created solely for personal use, and there are no cross-outs or corrections. Among the illustrations are cannons, bridges, forts, gates and walls, knots and slings, and more. West was an ensign in the Twelfth Infantry, stationed on Gibraltar in the late 1827. He was promoted to lieutenant in the spring of 1828, and still held that rank on the army list of 1840; by 1844 he was no longer listed. We can find no evidence that this manual was ever published or copied, and this manuscript appears to be unique. The first section addresses the process of making signal rockets (including several illustrations of their various parts), followed by sections on small arms and "blue lights." Next comes a lengthy section on cannons and the carriages used to transport them. Several types of carriages are illustrated, as are various "gyns," i.e. cannon mounts. The illustrations in this section include precise and accomplished drawings of a "triangle gyn," a "Gibraltar gyn," a "platform carriage," a "Devil carriage," and a "sling cart." Other drawings show methods of pulling ordnance up an incline or pulling cannon parts straight up an ascent using various cranes. The next section deals with the construction of bridges, and was adapted from the work of Sir Howard Douglas. The text describes and illustrates "flying bridges," pontoons, rope bridges, trestle bridges, and fords, and includes mathematical formulas for figuring the depth to which a pontoon is sunk by a given weight, and other such problems. A brief section follows on knots and slings, and contains several illustrations. The concluding section of the manuscript addresses problems of field fortification, including descriptions and illustrations of field lines, gates, and walls, as well as plants found in the warmer climates of the British Empire that may be used as obstacles in combat, such as the Aloe plant and the Prickly Pear (both are illustrated). The text is followed by an index. A very fine and accomplished military manual, created by a British soldier at a colonial outpost, and containing important practical instruction and exceptional illustrations.

        Calville blanc (apple)

Paris 1827 - Pierre Joseph Redoute (1759-1840) Illustrated plate from Choix des Plus Belles Fleurs Paris: 1827-1833 Hand-colored stipple engraving 23 1/4" x 19 1/2" framed; framed in a beautiful museum quality frame with gold leaf details, mounted with archival materials and UV plexiglass Excellent condition The works of the great botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redoute (1759-1840) seem to demand the invention of lofty praise. Described both as the “Rembrandt” and the “Raphael” of Flowers by nineteenth century writers, Redoute occupies a central position in the development of European botanical art. Born into a family of artists, Redoute's talents were recognized and encouraged from an early age. He studied botany with the noted naturalist Heritier de Brutelle, and learned the technique of painting in watercolor on vellum from Gerard van Spaendonck, Flower Painter to the King. By this master painter's own account, his pupil's work was finer. Redoute had, as pupils or patrons, five queens and empresses of France, from Marie Antoinette to Empress Josephine and her successor, Marie-Louise. Despite many changes of regime in this turbulent epoch, he worked without interruption, eventually contributing to over fifty books on natural history and archeology. The luminosity of stipple engraving is particularly suited to the reproduction of botanical detail. It is essentially a technique of etching a copper plate with a dense grid of dots that can be modulated to convey delicate gradations of color and tone. The plates were painted with watercolor before each impression, creating a rich and subtle color quality that is deeply pressed into the paper. The most delicate highlights and details are then added by hand to finish each print according to the exquisite watercolor models that Redoute provided. This complex and delicate printing process combines the technical virtuosity and aesthetic sensitivity that characterize Redoute's remarkable body of work. The Choix des Plus Belles Fleurs is one of Redoute's last, and most personal works. It is a selection of favorite flowers and fruits by a master who had devoted a lifetime to the art of botanical illustration. The images include spectacular blossoms plucked from formal gardens, as well as the more modest blooms of wayside flowers. These small and richly colored plates convey an intimate sense of beauty that sets them apart from other botanical works.

CONSTITUCION DE LA REPUBLICA BOLIVIANA REIMPRESA DE ORDEN DEL SUPREMO GOBIERNO.

Chuquisaca: Imprenta Boliviana, May 30, 1827. - [2],33pp. In Spanish. Pages 17 and 21 reversed due to printer's error. Gathered signatures, stitched. Clerical ink inscription ("763 G.R.M.") in inner margin of titlepage. Minor light staining. Very good, untrimmed. In a half morocco box. The extremely rare second and last official edition of Bolivia's first constitution, after the slightly less rare first edition of 1826. In 1825, Upper Peru became the final South American republic to secure its independence from Spain under the leadership of Simón Bolívar, renaming itself Bolivia in his honor. Bolívar himself drafted this first constitution of the country in 1825 and handed power to Gen. Antonio José de Sucre as president for life. The constitution was accepted by the second Bolivian congress in 1826, and Sucre accepted his appointment, but only for two years, with the provision that two thousand Columbian troops should remain with him in La Paz. In late 1827, after repeated uprisings, Sucre and his army were driven from the capital, and the constitution was changed the following year. This second edition, which bears a serious printer's error in the section on the president, is especially scarce and not recorded by Palau. OCLC records the imprint but locates no copies.         An Address Delivered to the Mississippi Hibernian Society on St. Patrick’s Day, 1827 [cover title].

Printed at the Ariel Office, Natchez [MS] 1827 - 8vo. (1), 7 pp. Original printed wrappers, the front wrapper bordered with a Greek key-meander; some spine erosion, owner’s name (a Smyth) on the front cover, but a very good copy housed in a custom cloth clamshell box. Unrecorded 1827 Natchez Imprint.First edition. Preceding the address are printed the letter from society president, Walter Irvine, requesting a copy of it so "that 150 copies should be printed, at the expense of the society, for distribution among its members", and Smyth’s response. In his Mississippi, as a Province, Territory, and State (pp. 470-471), Claiborne listed George W. Smyth among the members of the old Mississippi Supreme Court, that of its early statehood, and noted that he "was a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, of a family of distinction in Ireland. He rose rapidly at the bar in Natchez, and was on the threshold of a distinguished career when he died." (Neither Lynch’s Bench and Bar of Mississippi nor Rowland’s Courts, Judges, and Lawyers of Mississippi lists him.) The speech characterizes the society as primarily benevolent and the Irish experience there as one of acceptance and freedom. Rare; unrecorded by the NUC, OCLC, RLIN, American Imprints, Sabin, McMurtrie, and Owen. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Journal of an Officer in the King's German Legion: comprising an Account of his Campaigns and Adventures in England, Ireland, Denmark, Portugal, Spain, Malta, Sicily, and Italy.

London: Henry Colburn, 1827 - Octavo (190 × 115 mm) Slightly later half calf on brown cloth boards by Carss and Co. of Glasgow, black morocco label. A little rubbed, bookplate of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders to the front pastedown, hinges a touch cracked, light toning, about very good. First edition in English, first published in German in Hanover the year previously. Hering was a surgeon with the KGL. He joined up when the French occupied Hanover in 1803, "leaving his homeland clandestinely and joining the newly-formed King's German Legion in England. Hering's account of how in August 1804 he made his way northwards via Gottingen, Hanover city and Hamburg to the small North Sea port of Husum conveys the impression that he was a young man leaving home for the first time. His experiences as an army-surgeon between 1804 and 1816 (when he returned to Germany) is the subject [of the journal], which also contains a short history of the German Legion. After spending eighteen months in England he was posted to Ireland, where he lived from April 1806 till June 1807. Later he went to Denmark, Portugal, Spain, Malta, Sicily and Italy. His accounts of all these places similarly deserve notice. About his life after retirement from the army he is silent. Hering died at Gottingen on 10 November 1832. As historical evidence Hering's narrative is of good quality. It was based on a series of letters written by him while serving abroad to a relative in Germany which on his return he found to be 'a complete journal of my twelve years' service.' [It] is therefore not a memoir but a contemporary record of events. As a medical man he had long periods of leisure and was better disposed than most to consider the world objectively" (Wood, Select Documents XLI, Irish Historical Studies, Vol. 25, No.99, 1987). Uncommon. Sandler 29, unattributed.

Fordna och Närvarande Sverige (.) [Utsigter af] Upland / [Vues D Uplande]

Stockholm. Tryckt hos Carl Deleen. 1824-1827. - Folio. Ca. 44 x 60 cm. Parts I-V. Part II lacks the wrapper. Part I: Front wrapper (pasted at the front of an original card board portfolio) + 4 plates + 4 text leaves (bound into the portfolio); Part II: (No wrapper) 4 plates + 4 text leaves (bound into the portfolio); Part III: wrapper + 4 plates + 4 text leaves; Part IV: 4 plates + 4 text leaves; Part V: 4 plates + 4 text leaves. Present are the 5 first parts (containing 20 aquatint plates) to the Upland volume. Another 20 plates to Upland were published in lithography. They are not present here. A very rare set of original wrappers with mostly uncut text and plates belonging to one of the most sought after volumes of "Fordna och Närvarande Sverige" (Ancient and present Sweden) - Upland. The plates shows country estates in their natural settings. Lakes, forests, people, cows, horses, dogs and picturesque vistas are shown. The text is in French and Swedish. Almost all of these beautiful wrappers were thrown away a long time ago by the bookbinders and the plates and text were cut to fit appropriate bindings. Some lucky coincident made the present wrappers survive. This is the third, free standing, volume of the monumental topographical work "Fordna och närvarande Sverige" wnich was published 1817-1867 in 12 volumes containing 367 plates altogether. The first two volumes (Skåne and Östergötland) were executed entierly in aquatint, as were the early parts of the third and fourth volumes (Upland and Södermanland). When the original creator Ulric Thersner died in 1828 the aquatint technique were abandoned and lithography were adopted for the execution of the rest of the work. At that time both the provinces of Upland and Södermanland were under production, which explains why these volumes have plates both in aquatint and lithography. Original green/gray card board portfolio with the front of the first wrapper pasted at the front board. The contents of the first and second wrappers are bound into the portfolio. The remaining three wrappers with contents lay loose in the portfolio. The wrappers have decorative printed titles at the front. The province of Upland and part numbers are written by hand at the front of the wrappers. A few spots and creases to the portfolio. A few tears at the spine and at the flap. Small loss at the lower spine. A few creases and spots to the wrappers. A few spots, stains and some browning to the margins of some of the plates and text leaves. Slight damp stain in the margins to many of the plates and text leaves. A few plates and text leaves with fraying and small tears to the margins. One plate with two small holes in the margins and some repaired damage at the upper margin. Clean images. A very nice set. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Chateaux et Monumens des Pays-Bas Faisant suite au Voyage pittoresque, dédié à S.A.R. la Princesse d'Orange.

Jobard Frères, Bruxelles 1827 - Two volumes, each in a marbled paper slipcase, oblong 4to. Magnificently decorated later (1860's) full morocco bindings. Boards and spines richly gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt inner dentelles. All edges marbled and the edges of the boards tooled in gilt. Overall in an absolutely fine condition with the vast majority of the plates in pristine condition. Often it is assumed that this book is complete with 202 plates, probably based on the last number in the index of volume II, however, a complete copy should contain 205 lithographs. The text pages are unnumbered, but after collation all plates are accounted for in the text, so we consider the text to be complete as well. The plates of these castles and views are particularly attractive because of the vivid figures depicted here; walking, viewing or carrying out other activities in the direct vicinity of these mansions and sites. The lithographs in these volumes are by or after A. van Afferden, Bertrand, Colleye, T.S. Cooper, Goetgebuer, van Hemelryck, Jobard, Kreins, C.V. Labarge, Lemaître, de Looze, Madou, de Marbaix, Mogford, Moreau, Pingret, Roux, C.H. Smith, C.A. Snoeck and Sturm. An absolutely stunning beautiful copy of an uncommon book.         OSAGES PEUPLADE SAUVAGE DE L'AMERIQUE SEPTENTRIONALE, DANS L'ETAT DE MISSOURI. ARRIVES A PARIA LE 13 AOUT 1827. No. 89.

[Paris]: Lith. de Delpech, [1827]. - Handcolored lithograph, 13 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches. Lightly soiled, a bit of wear at the corners. Very good. Matted. A magnificent handcolored lithograph depicting three of the six Osage Indians that visited France in 1827. Their famed visit had a profound impact on French attitudes towards the tribe, many current members of which were the result of relations between French pioneers and Osage women. The six Indians, consisting of four warriors and two squaws, were quickly dubbed a "prince," "princesses," and "warriors" by the French press. Numerous publications were published in conjunction with the visit, as were a handful of prints. This print depicts three members of the group - two men and a woman. They are shown from the chest or waist up - spaced in an impressionistic style and not in a conventional pose. Kishagashugah, depicted on the right, was an Osage chief inspired by a tradition that his ancestor had visited Paris. He is shown holding a club and wearing a large medallion around his neck. Also depicted are a woman, Gretomih (at left) and Minckchatahooh, another warrior (below). This and most other images of the group portray the Indians as objects of fascination. It is clear this print was produced separately and not intended to accompany any text. The lithograph was drawn by Francois Delpech after a painting by Louis Boilly. We know of one other lithograph after Boilly of the Osages, numbered "90" (the present print is numbered "89"), but we are unaware of any other images of the Osages created by Boilly beside those two. We are able to locate only three other copies of this rare print - at the Newberry Library, Yale, and the American Philosophical Society. OCLC 41672603, 61658013.

Alessandro Volta. Engraved portrait By Rados after Focosi.

      L. Rados, Milan 1827 - Volta, Alessandro (1745-1827). Engraved portrait by Luigi Rados (1773-1840) after Roberto Focosi. Milan: presso l'Editore Proprietario Luigi Rados, 1828. 490 x 347 mm. Small repairs to margins, some faint stains, otherwise very good. This fine portrait, engraved after Volta's death, shows him seated at a table, his left hand inside his coat and his right resting on the table, with an example of his "crown of cups" battery at his right and a Voltaic pile behind him. A 7-line caption in Italian gives a brief resume of Volta's achievements. Volta, the inventor of the first electric battery, published his first paper on it in the Phil. Trans. in 1800; his investigations proved the identity of Galvani's "animal" electricity with the electricity generated by his apparatus. The Voltaic pile made possible the experiments leading to the decomposition of water, electro-deposition of metal, and creation of the electro-magnet, initiating the electrical age. Benezit for the engraver.

HIGH STREET CANTERBURY Drawn on stone by T.S. Cooper.

Canterbury: Henry Ward, 14, Sun Street. Printed by C. Hullmandel. [1827] - Hand-coloured lithograph. Image size 13 inches x 10.5 inches. Good clear impression. Mounted in acid-free card. This is one of the 'Six Views in Canterbury' drawn by Cooper and one of the few topographical works that he produced. This version has been lightly coloured to highlight the interesting details of the Paris and London Royal Mail coach and its passengers outside the Coach and Wagon Office at the George and Dragon. The view is towards King's Bridge and the Weavers with St Peter's Street beyond, leading to the Westgate. The lithographs were published by Ward in Canterbury and printed and sold by Hullmandel in London and by various booksellers in Kent. Thomas Sidney Cooper of Canterbury (1803-1902) was a celebrated and accomplished painter of livestock, especially cattle. A fine example of this scarce Canterbury street scene.         Tabletop Still Life

      - Paul Lacroix (1827-1869) Tabletop Still Life Oil on canvas Signed lower right 32” x 24”; 39 ½” x 31” framed This grand still life, which depicts lush fruits displayed on a tabletop arranged with grapevines and a glass of wine, is by the artist Paul Lacroix. This tribute to abundance reflects themid-19th century optimism and economic wealth of America. Educated Americans of this period were developing awareness and tastes for European works, such as late-17th century and early-18thcentury Dutch still-life paintings. The prolific 19th century American painter, Severin Roesen, developed his own variation of still-life painting and had a large following for his work. Lacroix's and Roesen's careers overlapped in New York, and it is thought that Lacroix was the talent behind many of Roesen's paintings as differences in the artist's work are indiscernible in some cases. This is further supported by the fact that Lacroix's name is mentioned only after Roesen left New York for Pennsylvania. Even though Lacrox's talent was as abundant as his subjects, much is unknown about the life of this artist. He was known to be of French/Swiss origin, immigrated to the United States in the late 1840s, and was active between 1858-1869. Sadly, current known works of Lacroix only account for a few short years, and his whereabouts after 1869 are not fully known. LaCroix exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Brooklyn Art Association during his lifetime, and his works are currently in the collections of New Britain Museum of American Art, CT; Holyoke Museum, MA; Brooklyn Museum and Lyman Allyn Museum, CT.         THE MONUMENT TO DE KALB, WHO FELL FIGHTING IN DEFENCE OF THE RIGHTS OF MAN ON THE PLAINS OF CAMDEN, STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, AUGUST 16th, 1780

[New York]: John Hill, 1827.. Aquatint with hand-coloring. Sheet size: 17 1/2 x 22 1/2 inches. Minor toning and light wear. Closed tear to top half of sheet, near center; closed tear repaired with tissue in left margin. Minor loss in center of image. Good. Handsome image of the monument erected to honor the Baron De Kalb, who was killed at the Battle of Camden, South Carolina, during the Revolutionary War. The monument was erected in front of the Presbyterian Church in Camden, and the cornerstone laid by General Lafayette, who was De Kalb's protege and fellow general during the war. The aquatint shows the church, with the monument in the right- center. A couple with a small dog stand before the monument, the man pointing with his cane and presumably explaining the importance of the monument to the woman. "...at Camden Kalb achieved immortality. Positioned on the American right, he and his regulars were exposed when the militia forces under Gates on the left and center collapsed and fled. Surrounded by superior forces, Kalb resisted stubbornly and mounted three assaults in an attempt to break the British lines. He sustained eleven wounds and died at Camden, having earned the apotheosis he sought. To a British officer who consoled him in his last hours, Kalb said, 'I thank you for your generous sympathy, but I die the death I always prayed for - the death of a soldier fighting for the rights of man'" - ANB. This very rare print was executed by John Hill, the foremost aquatint artist to work in the United States, and creator of the famed HUDSON RIVER PORTFOLIO. Any of Hill's individual productions are rare. There are very few prints of Southern subjects from this early a date. STAUFFER 1327.

The original Jamaican Nembhard was Dr John Nembhard (1711-1777).I quote Mabel: 'according to family tradition Dr. Nembhard was Dutch and descended from a famous general; some say he was a natural son of Prince Eugene of Savoy, who certainly was at The Hague from Nov. 1710 to Jan. 1711.' Dr John developed the Konigsberg estate in St Mary's, Jamaica, and made a considerable fortune.         Nouvel Almanach des Gourmands, servant de guide dans les moyens de faire excellente chère. Dédié au Ventre. Par A.B. de Périgord. Première année [Deuxième année] [Troisième année]

Paris: Baudouin Frères, 1825-1827 - A dozen years after the final volume of the celebrated Almanach des Gourmands of Grimod de la Reynière, Horace Raisson and Léon Thiessé initiated a new annual dedicated to the pleasures of the table and the stomach. It ran three years and contains reviews of restaurants and hotels, provisioners and wine merchants, recipes. Raisson was a prolific author whose subsequent works on gastronomy and etiquette were translated into English, Spanish, and Swedish, and did much to spread the fame of French cookery. The third year was edited by Thiessé alone. The three frontispieces depict "L'inspiration du gourmand," "Le premier devoir du gourmand," and "Promenade du gourmand." The excellent gastronomical map shows the diversity of French agricultural and wine-making regions. The prospectus praises Grimod de la Reynière and calls for samples to be submitted for review: 'since conscientious gourmands can only speak of that which they have seen, felt, and tasted, news, documents, samples, and "légitimations," in short, everything relevant to the Almanach des Gourmands - will be subitted to the appreciation of the enlightened jury, and then scrupulously announced, described, and judged in future annuals.' Notable in the second volume is a somewhat scoffing notice of Brillat Savarin's Physiologie du gout, which is deemed to be somewhat over long. The tone changes dramatically, for in the third volume is a contemporary biographical notice and elegy of Brillat Savarin, who died in 1826, not long after publication of his celebrated work. An interesting work from a key period in French gastronomy. Copies of the first year of this annual are found in institutional collections; the later years are quite scarce: complete sets at NYPL; Lilly, with the first year in second edition, lacking the map. The Bibliothèque National does not locate the second year (GASTRONOMY) First edition, all published. 3 vols., 18mo.
