        Reduta Heterophylla

Paris: 1827-1833 - Pierre Joseph Redoute (1759-1840) From Choix des Plus Belles Fleurs Paris: 1827-1833 Hand-colored stipple engravings 12 3/4” x 9 1/2” Very minor discoloration near bottom middle. The works of the great botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redoute (1759-1840) seem to demand the invention of lofty praise. Described both as the “Rembrandt” and the “Raphael” of Flowers by nineteenth century writers, Redoute occupies a central position in the development of European botanical art. Born into a family of artists, Redoute's talents were recognized and encouraged from an early age. He studied botany with the noted naturalist Heritier de Brutelle, and learned the technique of painting in watercolor on vellum from Gerard van Spaendonck, Flower Painter to the King. By this master painter's own account, his pupil's work was finer. Redoute had, as pupils or patrons, five queens and empresses of France, from Marie Antoinette to Empress Josephine and her successor, Marie-Louise. Despite many changes of regime in this turbulent epoch, he worked without interruption, eventually contributing to over fifty books on natural history and archeology. The luminosity of stipple engraving is particularly suited to the reproduction of botanical detail. It is essentially a technique of etching a copper plate with a dense grid of dots that can be modulated to convey delicate gradations of color and tone. The plates were painted with watercolor before each impression, creating a rich and subtle color quality that is deeply pressed into the paper. The most delicate highlights and details are then added by hand to finish each print according to the exquisite watercolor models that Redoute provided. This complex and delicate printing process combines the technical virtuosity and aesthetic sensitivity that characterize Redoute's remarkable body of work. The Choix des Plus Belles Fleurs is one of Redoute's last, and most personal works. It is a selection of favorite flowers and fruits by a master who had devoted a lifetime to the art of botanical illustration. The images include spectacular blossoms plucked from formal gardens, as well as the more modest blooms of wayside flowers. These small and richly colored plates convey an intimate sense of beauty that sets them apart from other botanical works.

Examen de la Constitucion de Don Pedro, Y de Los Derechos del Infante.

1827 - The Complicated Question of the Portuguese Succession, 1826-1827 [Portugal]. [Bordigne, Comte de]. Examen de la Constitucion de Don Pedro, Y de Los Derechos del Infante Don Muguel. Dedicado a Los Portugueses Fieles. Paris: [s.n.]. 1827. 195 pp. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5-1/2"). Original plain publisher wrappers, untrimmed edges. Some edgewear, light rubbing to wraps, moderate wear to spine, binding lightly cocked. Light browning to near top-edges of a few leaves at beginning of text, interior otherwise fresh. * This is a Spanish translation of Bordigne's Examen de la Constitution de Don Pedre, et des Droits de Don Miguel (1827). Also published as part one of his Legitimite Portugaise (1827), it examines the Portuguese succession in 1826-27. This was a case that raised several questions of legitimacy, constitutionality and nationality. In 1807 Napoleon compelled the Portuguese monarchy to flee to its colony of Brazil, which then became, by decree, the capital of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarve. In 1816 Joao VI returned to Portugal and demoted Brazil to colonial status. His eldest son, Pedro I, remain in Brazil, sided with its independence movement and declared himself emperor when independence was achieved. Pedro ruled Brazil until 1831, then abdicated to return to Portugal to help his daughter achieve the throne. Pedro I of Brazil became King of Portugal as Pedro IV (1826). Since no one wanted to re-establish the union of Portugal and Brazil Pedro abdicated the Portuguese throne in favor of his daughter Maria II da Gloria, then seven years old. Pedro's brother Miguel was to act as Regent and marry Maria when she came of age. Miguel instead proclaimed himself king and repudiated the liberal constitution granted by Joao VI. Maria was forced into exile. Her father Pedro returned from Brazil, and from the Azores waged a successful campaign against Miguel, who was defeated and exiled in 1834. This Spanish edition is not in the British Museum Catalogue, which lists editions in French and Portuguese. KVK locates 7 copies, all in Europe, OCLC locates 1 (at the Catholic University of America). [Attributes: Soft Cover]

London: for the Author, and sold by John Rodwell, 1827 - Quarto (270 × 208 mm) Recent blue half straight-grained morocco, marbled boards, by Trevor Lloyd, title direct to the spine, flat bands with an attractive foliate roll, fleurons gilt to the compartments, double gilt fillets to the spine and corner edges, Some browning throughout, but overall a very good copy in an attractive modern pastiche binding. 6 lithographic plates. First edition. A work of speculative philology by the author of Military Memoirs of Mr. George Thomas and The History of the Reign of Shah-Alum. Francklin (1763-1839) was the son of the classical scholar and dramatist Thomas Francklin. He was educated at Westminster and Trinity College, Cambridge, before being commissioned ensign in the Bengal Army and posted to the 19th Bengal Native Infantry in 1783, rising by 1814 to lieutenant-colonel both in his regiment and in the Army. "A distinguished officer, Francklin also enjoyed considerable reputation as an oriental scholar. In 1786 he made a tour of Persia, in the course of which he lived at Shiraz for eight months as the close friend of a Persian family, and was thus able to write a fuller account of Persian customs than had before appeared His publications also include a compilation of the memoirs of George Thomas, the military adventurer in India; translations from Persian; archaeological remarks on the plain of Troy, seeking to corroborate the existence of an ancient city there; historical, political, geographic, economic, and religious essays on parts of India. His religious writings include a discussion of the worship of the serpent in various parts of the world. He also maintained a learned correspondence with William Vincent and was one of the few people to whom Dean Vincent acknowledged obligations in the preface to the Periplus" (ODNB). Francklin was a member, librarian and Member of the Council, of the Royal Asiatic Society, and was also a member of the Asiatic Society of Bengal. Contemporary reviews were somewhat wary of some of Francklin's wilder forays into comparative religion, but the reviewer in The Asiatic Journal and Monthly Miscellany did concede that "he has the unquestionable merit of patient, we might even say enthusiastic research; and he has been so far successful, that many interesting descriptions of the cavern and rock temples, the colossal figures and sacred mountains of the Hindoos, are to be found in his book. He has also a long chapter on the serpent worship in various parts of the world He has followed Vossius in his leading illustrations; but though the information he affords us is less elaborate, it is certainly more pleasing to the general reader than that contained in the celebrated treatise De Origine et de Progressu Idololatriae [, 1641] or even in that of Faber [Origins of Pagan Idolatry, 1816]".         The Red Rover. A Tale

3 volumes. ix+336 pages; 309 pages; 341 pages. Small octavo (7 1/2" x 4 3/4") bound in full leather with black labels in gilt lettering to spine and blindstamped coat of arms to covers with gilt edge rule. Marbled page ends. (BAL 3838) First English edition. James Fenimore Cooper was born on September 15, 1789 in Burlington, New Jersey, the eleventh of twelve children. When he was one year old, he moved with parents William and Elizabeth to Cooperstown on Ostego Lake in central New York. During Cooper's boyhood, there were few backwoods settlers left and even fewer Indians. However, Cooper's early experiences in this frontier town gave him the background knowledge used in the Pioneers (1923). After boarding school in Albany, Cooper attended Yale College from 1803 - 1805 but was expelled. Apparently his expulsion stemmed from a dangerous prank that involved him blowing up another student's door. There Cooper acquired his lifelong distaste for New Englanders. In 1806, he became a sailor and then a midshipman in the Navy. At twenty, he inherited a fortune from his father and married Susan Augusta De Lancey, the daughter of a wealthy family that had remained Loyalist during the Revolution. Cooper married De Lancey New Years Day, 1811 and for two years he led the life of a country gentleman. When all five of his older brothers died, leaving widows and children behind, Fenimore began searching for work and wealth. In 1820, Cooper's wife bet him that he could write a book better than the one she was reading. What followed was Precaution (1820) a novel of morals and manners that showed the influence of Jane Austen. With a pleasant enough reception, he published The Spy: A Tale of Neutral Ground (1821) the first historical romance about the American Revolution. Then, on its success, Fenimore moved to New York City to pursue writing as a career. While in New York, he founded the Bread and Cheese Club and became the center of a circle that included notable painters of the Hudson River School as well as writers like William Cullen Bryant. In 1823, Cooper published The Pioneers which eventually consisted of five books about Natty Bumppo called The Leatherstocking Tales. With this, he created what can be critically viewed as the first American novel and hero. He also brought up the thematic complexities of natural right versus legal right, order versus change, and wilderness versus civilization which still fill the pages of American writing today. In 1826, at the height of his popularity, he sailed for Europe for what became a seven year stay. He wrote The Prairie (1827) and Notions of the Americans (1828) a defense of the United States against the attacks of European travelers. Under the half-patronizing epithet of "the American Scott" he wrote three historical novels that mimicked the writing of Sir Walter Scott. Returning to the US in 1833, Cooper was so hurt by a review that he penned A Letter to his Countrymen (1834) which was a bitter attack on American provincialism. He also became involved in disputes in Cooperstown where he was attacked by newspapers as a false aristocrat poisoned by European influences. In response, Cooper immersed himself in law suits aimed at gaining damages that would tame the irresponsibility of the press. Cooper established the principle that reviewers must work within the bounds of truth when they deal with an author rather than the book. Even with this scandal at his heels, Cooper continued to write a school primer, The American Democrat (1838) and three more Leatherstocking Tales: The Last of the Mohicans (1826), The Pathfinder (1840), and The Deerslayer (1841). Then came Cooper's obsession with the sea from his previous experience in the Navy. He penned The History of the Navy of the United States of America (1839), The Cruise of Sommers (1844), and The Distinguished American Naval Officers (1846). At the time of his death on September 14, 1851, Cooper was more successful and respected abroad than at home. Out of step with his countrymen, his work was very influential to European writers like Honore de Balzac and Leo Tolstoy. Yet, the weaknesses of Fenimore's fiction are quite well known and wide-spread. Mark Twain tore apart Fenimore's romanticism in Fenimore Coopers Literary Offenses (1895). Clearly, Fenimore's tone was criticized as being reactionary, romantic, and pedagogical in tone. However, Cooper did contribute a great deal to the genre of American fiction. In the grand enterprise, even today, everyone has read books and seen films that are directly and indirectly affected by Cooper's conception of Natty Bumppo and his creation of the American novel.Condition: Some signatures sprung, rubbing to extremities, corners bumped, some scuffing, book plates to front pastedowns.         Le Peche (peach)

Paris 1827 - Pierre Joseph Redoute (1759-1840) Illustrated sheet from Choix des Plus Belles Fleurs Paris: 1827-1833 Hand-colored stipple engraving Sheet size: 12 1/2" x 9 3/4" The works of the great botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redoute (1759-1840) seem to demand the invention of lofty praise. Described both as the “Rembrandt” and the “Raphael” of Flowers by nineteenth century writers, Redoute occupies a central position in the development of European botanical art. Born into a family of artists, Redoute’s talents were recognized and encouraged from an early age. He studied botany with the noted naturalist Heritier de Brutelle, and learned the technique of painting in watercolor on vellum from Gerard van Spaendonck, Flower Painter to the King. By this master painter’s own account, his pupil’s work was finer. It is essentially a technique of etching a copper plate with a dense grid of dots that can be modulateto convey delicate gradations of color and tone. The plates were painted with watercolor before each impression, creating a rich and subtle color quality that is deeply pressed into the paper. The most delicate highlights and details are then added by hand to finish each print according to the exquisite watercolor models that Redoute provided. This complex and delicate printing process combines the technical virtuosity and aesthetic sensitivity that characterize Redoute’s remarkable body of work.

Voyage à Peking, à travers la Mongolie en 1820 et 1821. Traduit du russe par M. N., revu par M. J.-B. Eyriès

Paris: Dondey-Dupré père et fils, 1827. Two octavo volumes bound in one, and a quarto atlas with lithographic title page, large folding map, two folding plans and eight lithographic plates; occasional scattered foxing, a very good set in matching later quarter crimson morocco. A Russian envoy to China. First French edition, recounting the experiences of a Russian envoy to China in the years 1820-1821. Significantly, the atlas volume includes a large plan of the Forbidden City, the first to be published in a Western book. The author, Russian diplomat Egor Fedorovich Timkovski accompanied the Russian Orthodox mission to Peking departing Kyakhta in August 1820. Russia had maintained a presence in Peking since 1728. As the embassy contained a church and school, it formed a centre of cultural exchange, language instruction and diplomatic activity between two great empires. The staff of the embassy were refreshed each decade, providing the need for ongoing missions from Russia to the Imperial Court.Timkovski's account was considered one of the most important China books of its era, on account of the information he obtained from the long serving Orthodox priests at the Peking embassy. With years of cultural exposure and formidable linguistic competence, the priests provided Timkovski with rich descriptions of Mongol customs and religious life, and enough additional information to expand the scope of his book to Eastern Turkestan, Tibet and Korea. Immediately popular, it was translated and published in German, Dutch, French, English and Polish editions by 1828.Eight lithographic plates of customs and costumes provide an unusually serene and intimate insight into everyday life, depicting a mounted nomad, musicians, gamblers, a Manchu couple in formal dress and a remarkable grouping of four hunters dressed in furs. The large folding map accurately charts the route of the embassy to Peking through Mongolia, providing a novel and accurate geographical record of the vast Gobi desert.Timkovski's narrative was edited for publication by accomplished orientalist and explorer Heinrich Klaproth, who had previously travelled through Mongolia in 1805-1807 as part of an unsuccessful Russian embassy to the Imperial Court. Klaproth contributes a statistical overview to the atlas, detailing the wealth, agricultural output, and population of each of the Chinese provinces. Interestingly, he totals some 142,326,734 souls for the entire nation.

Stanze Sotterranee Dov' Erano Custoditi I Tesori Reali

Milan - Aquatint engraving with original hand color. Ca. 1827. Sheet size: 15 x 18 1/4". Inventory#: p488pmat. "Scena esequita pel Ballo grande-Sesostri-inventato, e posto sulle Scene dell' I. R. Teatro alla Scala, dal Sig. Salvatore Taglioni. L'Autunno dell'anno 1824." As opera reached a height of popularity and innovation in early 19th-century Italy, stage sets and scenery were increasingly viewed as art forms unto themselves. Enterprising artists and designers competed to create the most lavish, evocative, and visually engaging opera settings, and were so successful that their stage sets often competed with the performances themselves for an audience's attention and appreciation. Public criticism of various operas often revolved as much around the quality of the set designs as the beauty of the music, and audiences became increasingly discerning about the visual aspects of grand performances. Reflecting this tendency, Alessandro Sanquirico, a Milanese artist, was inspired to document the most striking sets at Italy's most celebrated opera house, La Scala in Milan. Sanquirico's vividly colored, masterfully drafted aquatint engravings capture the sumptuousness and sheer spectacle of these extravagant sets, often including costumed singers in the midst of a concert, and at the same time the artist brings the excitement of the performance to life in these remarkably vibrant illustrations. 0

Bell's Life in London, and Sporting Chronicle; Combining, with the News of the Week, A rich Repository of Fashion Wit and Humour and the Interesting Incidents of Real Life

London: Published at Four O'Clock Every Saturday Afternoon by Messrs. Smith's, 192, Strand, London, Ca 1827. Folio. A four-page advertisement for Bell's paper, printed on two conjugate leaves by B. Bensley, Bolt Court, Fleet Street. First sheet illustrated with numerous sporting subjects in the style of George Cruikshank. Fine, fresh copy. Patten, George Cruikshank, I, pp. 300-301 et seq . Bell's Life in London was a rival to Pierce Egan's Life in London and Sporting Guide, an offshoot of his highly successful book. Egan began his periodical in 1824 as a Sunday weekly, and in 1826 asked Cruikshank to design some wood engravings to head the paper's regular features, which increased its circulation. Some Cruikshank designs were subsequently used, without the artist's consent, by Bell's paper, and in 1827 Egan, unable to achieve the success of his competitor, sold out to Bell, who merged the two journals into one. Bell's was a conspicuous success: it sold as many as sixteen thousand copies weekly to the poorest classes. This advertisement, in addition to its lively cover of over twenty woodcuts, features a number of poetical effusions to Royalty, the Nobility, Members of Parliament, the Clergy, the Army and Navy, the Commercial, Agricultural and Theatrical Worlds, and, of course, Sportsmen of Every Degree The advertisement is not a part of Bell's periodical, but was a separately issued publication to promote circulation

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Wien, 14. XI. 1827. Capture of Le Sparviere, May 3rd 1810

London, James Jenkins 1827 - Thomas Whitcombe (1763-1824) The Naval Achievements of Great Britain From the Year 1793 to 1817 London, James Jenkins: 1817 Hand-colored aquatint engraving 11" x 14" English artist Thomas Whitcombe is considered one of the foremost painters of maritime art and the French Revolutionary wars, with works standing today in the Tate, the National Gallery and the National Maritime Museum. Whitcombe painted over 150 works detailing the affairs of English fleets during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, including his contribution of 55 watercolors for The Naval Achievements of Great Britain, From the Year 1793 to 1817, published in 1817 under James Jenkins. For its time, The Naval Achievements of Great Britain was unprecedented in its accuracy, giving the most precise written and pictorial accounts of naval life over a period of 20 years. Never before had a publisher attempted such a complete volume of documentary naval images. Together Whitcombe and fellow marine artist Nicolas Pocock contributed the 55 watercolors for the folio. This selection of hand-colored aquatints from the volume features some of the most historically important and visually stimulating images from these battles.
