Biographical Sketches and Interesting Anecdotes of Persons of Colour.

York: Alexander & Son, 1826. hardcover. very good. Slim 8vo, 3/4 brown morocco, marbled boards, slightly rubbed, occasional foxing, hinges reinforced. York: Printed and Sold by W. Alexander & Son, Castlegate; sold also by Harvey and Darton, W. Phillips, E. Fry, and W. Darton, London; R. Peart, Birmingham; D. F. Gardiner, Dublin, 1826. First English edition, which omits the poetry included in American editions. Very good. Scarce. Sabin 51111. Abigail Mott (1766-1851) was born into a prominent Quaker family in Westchester County, New York. Recent research has shown that Abigail and her sister Lydia were highly active in the Underground Railroad in the Albany area. "The Mott sisters were Quakers who regularly aided fugitives passing through the city from the late 1820s onwards and were instrumental in forming the Albany Female Antislavery Society. Lydia tutored the nine-year-old daughter of Frederick Douglass in the late 1850s" (Switala, Underground Railroad in New Jersey and New York, 2006).An early memoir of her remarks that "She entertained a lively sympathy with the suffering class of her fellow creatures, from whatever cause those sufferings might arise She felt tenderly for that oppressed portion of the human family, whose rights as men are torn from them, and they doomed to a state of bondage that is to be transmitted from parents to their children The depressed condition of the people of color in the 'Free States' likewise attracted her attention and her commiseration. From a desire to promote their improvement, she wrote and published 'Sketches' of the characters of those of their own people who had most distinguished themselves, with the hope of exciting a spirit of emulation by such examples, that might tend to the elevation of their character" (Memoir of Purchase Monthly Meeting concerning Abigail Mott, New York, James Egbert, 1852).

        Herveiana. Part III.

Printed and Published by John Cole 1826 - FIRST EDITION, woodcut arms on title, 2 woodcuts in the text, and extra-illustrated, pp. [vi], 25, [1], 12mo, contemporary half calf, spine partly defective. Final part in a series of miscellanies devoted to the life and work of James Hervey; parts 1 & 2 were issued in 1822 and 1823 respectively. Panoramic view of Scarborough by Abraham Mason on the verso of the last leaf. This is Cole's own copy, inscribed in a minuscule hand on the title-page: 'John Cole's Private Illustrated Copy of Herveiana Part III.' Most of Cole's publications were in very small editions (between 25 and 60 copies). No limitation is given here, but the fact that only 2 copies are recorded (1 in COPAC, National Trust, and 1 in WorldCat, Harvard) does suggest a very small initial number. There are 13 plates, 2 of which may be proper to the book, bearing as they do Cole's imprint. 2 of the 'plates' are full pages inserted, with but a facsimile signature upon them. There is also one small engraving pasted onto a text page.

Taf. mit 8 Abb.). - - Johann Friedrich Dieffenbach had already expressed the idea of closing palatal defects by mobilizing the edges of the bony defect (1826) in his translation of Ph. J. Roux's 'Mémoire sur la staphyloraphie' (1825)." - "In 1826 Dieffenbach published his method for repair of clefts of the hard palate, thus extending the techniques of Joseph Roux (1780-1854) and von Graefe, who had treated defects of the soft palate. Dieffenbach was obviously familiar with von Graefe's work and also with that of Roux, whose articles he had translated into German medical literature. Dieffenbach's palatoplasty involved dissection of the mucosa, division, and immediate or gradual approximation of the bone by twisting silver or lead sutures passed through holes in the bone by needles of his design. He advised lateral relaxing incisions in 1826, but did not employ them until 1828." Robert M. Goldwyn - Roux's "suture, probably a precursor of Veau's wire suture, was undoubtedly an advance. However, it produced severe, painful tension, which may have threatened the suture line in the sutured soft palate - particularly in patients with broad clefts. This changed with Dieffenbach's introduction of the lateral relaxation incision." "Dieffenbach also carried out the first attempt of total reconstruction of an almost completely absent soft palate from the buccal mucosa. This attempt failed, and a repetition of this operation, which was planned, did not take place." "Dieffenbach was an excellent observer. He had observed the stimulating effect of palates which bridged residual defects, and of obturators. He also noted that, in the course of time, the stimulating effect (in combination with the use of Cantharides-tincture) produced closure of residual openings as wide as a finger." - Thorough as he was, Dieffenbach extensively studied the anatomical structures, including their comparative anatomy and their variations, to be able to arrive at conclusions on the basis of their functional effects; he investigated also the problem of the development of cleft formation in embryos. With his friend Kleeberg, from Königsberg, he arrived at correct concepts regarding the time of cleft development, as well as its character as an inhibition-malformation of the palatine processes which had failed to unite." - "Later, he also observed the favourable effect of staphylorraphy on decreased hearing. He was convinced that he cured patients who were deaf." cf. Eduard Schmid - - Weitere enthaltene Arbeiten von J.F.

The Last Man. By the Author of Frankenstein.

1826 - First edition. Three volumes. 8vo., contemporary half calf, marbled boards, smooth spines, marbled edges. London, Henry Colburn Text quite soiled in parts, particularly the title pages, minor wear to the bindings, bookplates removed, and the ink annotation to the first title page ?To be kept two days only?, indicating that it was initially a circulating copy. Rather oddly the inscription is trimmed by the binder which, coupled with the soiling to the title-ages, indicates that it originally circulated in its original boards until they fell off: the binding is certainly contemporary and shows no signs of any monkey business having been played on it.The Last Man is an ambitious novel, set in the 21st century, with central characters drawn from her own life: Percy Bysshe Shelley is Adrian, son of the last and now dead king of England; Byron is Lord Raymond, who becomes the Lord Protector of England; Mary herself is Lionel Verney. Jane Dunn's analysis of the story defies much in the way of synthesis: ?In an accumulative nightmare, the ravages of the plague destroyed everything of civilized life, penetrating to the heart of family and home. The survivors were not a unified band, but a miserable disparate crew who meekly accepted their fate. It could be argued that this was an expression of mary's undoubted emotional conservatism, her instinctive fear of rapid and radical change. That she had written a parable of the dehumanizing threat of unchecked industrialization is possible, living as she did through the Industrial Revolution, well aware of the Cobbetts of the land who feared the ravages and neglect of the countryside, the destruction of the people. But more it was an expression of her own desolation of spirit and disillusionment with her fellows. During the time she was writing it Mary felt acutely isolated and alone, at times so out of place in London society, so much an alien, that surely she was the last relic of her beloved race. Deprived by death of those whom she had so loved, she was the Last Man, 'girded, walled in, vaulted over, by seven-fold barriers of loneliness.'Mayr's story defied categorisation. Full of horror, it nevertheless did not belong to the Gothic tradition. It in no way relied on supernatural angecies but rather was given substance and credence with its realism and domestic detail.?The book was met with hostility, although there was a second edition in the same year: the general public were uncomprehending, and Percy's father, Sir Thomas, was so offended with the portrayal of his son that he withdrew for a while any financial support to Mary and Percy's son Percy Florence Shelley.         Convito. Ridotto a lezione migliore

Bella copia in barbe e a pieni margini. Un'aggiunta manoscritta all'errata finale. The Fiske Dante Collection, I, 71. Italiano

Biographical Sketches and Interesting Anecdotes of Persons of Colour.

Alexander & Son, York 1826 - Abigail Mott (1766-1851) was born into a prominent Quaker family in Westchester County, New York. Slim 8vo, 3/4 brown morocco, marbled boards, slightly rubbed, occasional foxing, hinges reinforced. York: Printed and Sold by W. Alexander & Son, Castlegate; sold also by Harvey and Darton, W.         String Quartet, D887, "Grand Quatuor En Sol Pour Deux Violons, Alto Et Violoncelle, Oeuvre 161"- INSCRIBED BY DIABELLI EDITOR SPINA TO HENRI VIEUXTEMPS

Diabelli, Vienne - Complete parts to Schubert's Quartet no. 15, op. 161, signed and inscribed on the Violino Primo title page by Diabelli publisher Carl Anton Spina to the important Belgian violinist Henri Vieuxtemps: "A monsieur Henry Vieuxtemps par son admirateur le plus dévoué - C.A. Spina." Four parts: 23; 19; 19; 19 pp. Engraved. [PN] 9099. Scattered foxing throughout, small tears and chips around the edges/spine of first violin part, overall very good. Schubert wrote his truly monumental quartet no. 15 in only ten days in 1826, and with it paved the way for his large-scale symphonic works. The piece was not performed in public in his lifetime, and was first published posthumously in 1852 by Diabelli.Anton Spina (1790-1857) started to work with the publisher A. Diabelli in 1824. He handled the commercial part whereas Diabelli cared for the artistic part of the company. In 1850, Carl Anton Spina (1827-1906), son of Anton, became part of the firm as a third associate and soon led the company on his own after the retirement of his father and Diabelli in 1851. Vieuxtemps was one of the most important musicians of the 19th century. As one of the greatest of all violin virtuosos, he was compared to Paganini by both Schumann and Berlioz. As a composer, he was an important reformer of the concerto and in this regard, according to Grove, "can be compared to Liszt." At the time of the present publication and inscription, the instrumental music of Schubert was largely untried on European concert stages. Vieuxtemps was an important early performer of some of the Schubert quartets in particular, performing them in London and elsewhere.  [Attributes: First Edition]
