Sur l'identité des deux espèces nominales d'Ornithorhynque; (Lu à l'Académie des Sciences le 18 décembre 1826)

Annales des Sciences Naturelles, Paris 1826 - 12 pp., caption-title; tipped into a modern binding of quarter linen and boards. The renowned French zoologist Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire on the platypus: an important study, read to the Académie des Sciences and set up in print for publication in the appropriate learned journal. This is a very rare separate offprint (paginated 1 to 8 for separate issue rather than simply being clipped from its journal version).Saint-Hilaire here discusses research into the platypus made possible by the delivery of a brace of the monotremes by Hyacinthe de Bougainville, commander of the Thétis expedition just returned to Paris from the southern ocean. He discusses work by Shaw in England, reports by Péron from the Baudin expedition, and work by other eminent naturalists in Europe. The second half of the text is the most controversial, occupied by vigorous debate about ideas promulgated by the German naturalist Meckel in his ground-breaking Ornithorhynchi Paradoxi published just weeks previously. Meckel's first full separate study of the animal concentrated on the animal's reproductive system and especially the mammary glands of the female. Saint-Hilaire objected strenuously to this approach, asserting that the relevant glands were in fact odoriferous and designed only to attract a mate. Saint-Hilaire was, of course, plain wrong, but that didn't become clear for decades. Meanwhile in the furious debates about the classification of the platypus of the 1820s and 1830s, Saint-Hilaire occupied centre-stage. (Some years ago we handled the sale of a collection of his manuscript drafts and notes on the subject, which showed just how controversial the whole subject became). It was Saint-Hilaire himself who had coined the term "Monotremata" as early as 1803. He had been appointed professor of quadrupeds, cetaceans, birds, reptiles and fish at the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle in 1793 at the young age of twenty-one. He travelled with Napoleon's campaign to Egypt, but it was his long study of the museum's mammalian collection that made him famous, and led to comparisons with Cuvier (although the two men fell out in 1829). During his tenure he published a series of articles and monographs on the platypus, stubbornly holding that it must be a vertebrate, and refusing to believe that it could possibly be a mammal.         Osman. Spjevagne vitescko. Dubrovnik, Antun Martekini, 1826.

1826. Large 8vo. 3 vols. 201, xxiv pp. 268 pp. 270, [1] pp. With bilingual woodcut printing privilege on last leaf recto of vol. I. Printed original wrappers. In cloth case. First edition; extremely rare. "Gundulic's poem 'Osman' (written 1626; first published 1826) was the outstanding achievement of the Renaissance flowering of art and literature that gave Dubrovnik the name of the 'South Slavonic Athens'" (Encyclopaedia Britannica). The Serbo-Croatian verse epic by Ivan Gundulic, the "leading voice" (ibid.) of Croatian national literature, tells the story of the Turkish Sultan Osman II (1604-22), who ascended the throne at the age of 15 (replacing his incompetent uncle Mustapha I), but was defeated by the Poles at Khotin and was murdered by Daud Pasha in a 1622 janissary rebellion. Within Dalmatian literature, Gundulic (1589-1638) "is the first to set a contemporary subject at the center of a literary, heroic-idyllic world, replete with the entire gamut of contemporary literature's popular motifs" (cf. KNLL VII, 77). The work, which was to give Christianity hope of a near end of Ottoman power, was created between 1622 and 1638 but remained unprinted for two centuries: "The epic poem in 20 cantos is kept in crossed-rhymed quatrains [...] Gundulic's epic appeared in print only two hundred years after the poet's death. Still, as it was circulated in numerous manuscript copies, it was of fundamental importance for the development of the poetic language of Croat Baroque. In the first half of the 19th century the poets of the Croat Renaissance found in Gundulic's 'Osman' the model for their linguistic expression and an example for their own ethico-political principles in the Croatian people's struggle for self-determination" (ibid.). - A remarkably fresh, uncut copy in the original wrappers as issued to the Italian book trade (with a detailed "Avviso" concerning the book's publishing history and the terms and conditions of sale and distribution). Some wrappers have large defects to the spines; occasional insignificant brown-spotting inside. Very rare; no copy in trade records of the past 50 years; no copy in German library catalogs. British Library and Bibliothéque Nationale both only own the Italian translation, published by Martekini in Ragusa (Dubrovnik) the following year. Only five copies in OCLC (Yale, Chicago, Indiana, Harvard, Columbia). KNLL VII, 77f. (KLL 7054f.). Cf. also Zdenko Zlatar. The Slavic epic: Gundulic's Osman (= Balkan studies 4), New York 1995.

Autograph letter signed ("Say"). Paris, 5. VIII. 1826.

1826. Large 4to. 1 p. with the integral address leaf attached. In French, to the engineer Mr. Collier in Ghent, writing in part: "Here I am back home at last, where it seems I will not be disturbed. I saw the chancellor of France two times, the President of the Court of Peers, which is the only one with the jurisdiction to judge me, and it seems that they have no desire at all to treat me rigorously. I will probably be pardoned on the King s birthday at the beginning of November. I thought you would receive this news with interest, and I ask you to have the kindness to pass it on to your son in London, whom I won t write until later. The present letter has another purpose, as well, i.e., to solicit your good offices for having several prospectuses of my work on the judicial institutions of England &c. distributed in Ghent, particularly at the school; they will reach you with one of the next couriers [...]". - Say is best known for his law of markets, which postulates that supply creates its own demand. He attributed depression, therefore, not to a general deficiency in demand but rather to temporary overproduction for some markets and underproduction for others. This imbalance must automatically adjust itself, he believed, because overproducers have to redirect their production to conform with consumers preferences or be forced out of business. Say's law remained a central tenet of orthodox economics until the Great Depression of the 1930s. An obvious implication of Say s law is that the capitalist system is self-regulating; thus there is no need for government intervention in economic affairs.

A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF THE LIFE OF THE LATE CAPT MICHAEL CRESAP

Cumberland, Md.: Printed for the Author, by J.M. Buchanan, 1826. 123,[1]pp. 12mo. Contemporary three-quarter roan and marbled boards, spine gilt. Boards lightly rubbed and shelfworn. Early ownership signature on front free endpaper. Light tanning, scattered foxing, old light dampstain in lower third of final five leaves of text. About very good. In a burgundy half morocco and cloth slipcase, spine gilt, and folding cloth chemise. First edition of this biography of Captain Cresap, defending him against charges that he slaughtered Indians before the beginning of the Revolutionary War. In particular, Cresap became infamous in the case of the Indian, Logan, and the murder of his defenseless family in 1774. "This biography of Cresap was written to refute Jefferson's account in NOTES ON VIRGINIA....The immediate occasion for this now rare book, written by the revolutionary officer, later clergyman, who had married Cresap's widow, was the reopening of old sores by [Joseph] Doddridge in his then recently published NOTES [ON THE SETTLEMENT AND INDIAN WARS, OF THE WESTERN PARTS OF VIRGINIA & PENNSYLVANIA, FROM THE YEAR 1763 UNTIL THE YEAR 1783 INCLUSIVE] of 1824. The defense is complete and the biography is of absorbing interest" - Streeter. HOWES J32, "b." SABIN 35488. STREETER SALE 1335. FIELD 769. THOMSON 640. AMERICAN IMPRINTS 24967.         Eigenh. Brief mit U. Dessau, 22. I. 1826.

1826. 3 SS. auf gefalt. Doppelblatt. 8vo.

Autograph manuscript signed. Egypt, 1826.

1826. 4to (235 x 185 mm). 177 pp. Contemporary wrappers (wanting spine). Ms. title and name on front cover. An early 19th century egyptologist's fascinating travel notes documenting his journey through the Nile valley, profusely illustrated with more than 230 sketches showing hieroglyphs and Greek and Coptic inscriptions. At the age of 27, Louis Vaucelle (1798-1851) undertook an expedition to Egypt to explore the banks of the Nile from Cairo to Aswan. He set out from Marseille on 27 January 1826 and reached the second cataract on 27 May. In his journal he accurately reproduces all cartouches and inscriptions of the temples, tombs and palaces visited up to the first cataract south of Aswan. He gives the condition of monuments (sometimes mere ruins), identifies traces of Christian chapels and churches, translates hieroglyphs dedicated both to pharaohs and Roman emperors, indicates (in cursive script) several Arabic words and names, and mentions the orientalists who preceded him: his mentor Champollion as well as Denon, Maillé, Belzoni, and Niebuhr. Among the temples and sites he describes are Ipsamboul, Edfu, Dakka ("un des mieux conservés"), Thèbes ("Louqsor"), Karnak, Denderah Assouan, Elephantine and Philae as well as the pyramids of Giza, Cleopatra's Needle, the Sphinx (the head of which is said to be "extrêmement mutilée"), Alexandria, and the Nile Delta. The final fifty-odd pages are devoted to contemporary Egyptian cities, their people, and their Arab, Jewish and Coptic traditions. As Vaucelle notes, Coptic Christians are free to practice their religion due to the unrivalled tolerance of the Muslim faith ("tant il est vrai qu'il n'y a pas de religion plus tolérante que la religion mahométane"). He also provides details of medical operations such as castration, circumcision, and excision, as well as of the "Kalisch" festivities held in Cairo at the time of the opening of the dikes. - Louis de Vaucelles de Ravigny was trained by Jean-François Champollion, who in 1824 published his "Précis du système hiéroglyphique des anciens Égyptiens". Apart from the present travel journal he also produced a "Chronologie des monuments antiques de la Nubie" (1829), based on the interpretation of the royal legends contained in the hieroglyphic reliefs, a book in which he pays tribute to the German egyptologist François-Christian Gau. - Slight fraying to edges; wants wrappers' spine. A fine survival.

In terms of narrative order, it also is the second novel in the series, taking place in 1757, during the French and Indian War. Its principal character is Natty Bumppo, also called Hawkeye, now in middle life and at the height of his powers. The story tells of brutal battles with the Iroquois and their French allies, cruel captures, narrow escapes, and revenge. The beauty of the unspoiled wilderness and sorrow at its disappearance, symbolized in Hawkeye?s Mohican Indian friends, the last of their tribe, are important themes of the Novel? (Merriam-Webster?s Encyclopedia of Literature). The Last of the Mohicans was the second and most famous of Cooper?s ?Leatherstocking Tales,? although it was the first tale to be published. The other novels in the series (in order of composition) are The Pioneers (1823), The Prairie (1827), The Pathfinder (1840), and The Deerslayer (1841). The sequence in relation to plot is The Deerslayer, The Last of the Mohicans, The Pathfinder, The Pioneers, and The Prairie.BAL 3833. Grolier, 100 American, 34. Shoemaker 24217.         The Royal Pavilion at Brighton. Published by the Command of, and dedicated by permission to the King, by His Majesty's dutiful Subject and Servant John Nash.

[1826] 1826 - [1826], Folio (520 x 410 mm), Fine Blue Morocco backed marbled boards, edges gilt, with 31 hand-coloured aquatints and 28 uncoloured line engravings, the hand-coloured plates mounted on buff card, one is large and folding, captions mounted on verso of the coloured plates, a splendid copy. First Edition of a monumental work describing one of the most extraordinary and flamboyant palaces in English history. This lavish work was conceived by the Prince Regent (then King George IV). He commissioned his architect Sir John Nash to produce a bound series of views displaying the wonders of the building that Nash had designed, the ' Royal Pavilion at Brighton' Nash instructed his pupil Augustus Pugin to produce a series of drawings, to be used to illustrate the work. Publication of this grand work was somewhat haphazard, resulting in copies of the book not conforming to the list of plates. This copy, however, is one of the most complete with a total of 59 plates. The Pavilion as we now know it was the result of a collaboration between the architect Sir John Nash (1752?1835), the firm of Crace (specialists in interior decoration) and their patron the Prince Regent. The Prince of Wales known familiarly to his friends as "Prinny", was born in 1762 and destined to become Prince Regent in 1811 following the onset of the madness of his father, George III. He finally became George IV in 1820, but reigned as such for only a decade, dying in 1830 at the age of 68. He is remembered as a great connoisseur and collector of art (setting a precedent for subsequent Princes of Wales to take an interest in architecture), most especially through his patronage of John Nash, who at his behest redesigned Buckingham Palace and created the elegant London developments still known as Regent Street and Regent's Park.         Greenwich Hospital

1826. first edition. In the Original Boards it is Extremely Scarce" (Cohn)Last Copy At Auction In 1944[CRUIKSHANK, George, artist]. AN OLD SAILOR [pseudonym of M.H. Barker]. Greenwich Hospital. A Series of Naval Sketches, Descriptive of the Life of a Man-O-War's Man. By an Old Sailor. With Illustrations by George Cruikshank. London: James Robins and Co., 1826. First edition. Large quarto (11 1/4 x 8 7/8 in; 286 x 223 mm). iv, 200 pp. Eleven hand-colored etched plates including frontispiece and one hand-colored aquatint plate (#8 "Paying Off"). Plates watermarked "J. Whatman 1825 & 1826". Sixteen text woodcuts. Publisher's original gray paper printed and pictorial boards entirely uncut. Small light marginal stain affecting first eight text gatherings (pp. 1-56), otherwise a very fresh copy. Spine ends, joints and corners expertly and almost invisibly restored. Still an exceptionally fine copy of a book rarely found in this state. Chemised in a felt-lined full dark blue morocco slip case."Originally published in four parts, and then in pink or gray paper picture boards, with woodcuts on the top and bottom covers duplicated from those in the text... In the original parts the work is of the utmost rarity, while in the original boards it is extremely scarce. Bound copies are much more usual. There is a reissue of this item with the plates coloured in a very inferior manner. This should be avoided" (Cohn).According to the ABPC Index, it has been seventy-two years since the last copy in original boards came to auction, in 1944.Of George Cruikshank (1792-1878), little need be added here beyond the fact that he followed his father, Isaac Cruikshank, into the trade and was the successor to Thomas Rowlandson; he was the greatest caricaturist of his era, known as "the Modern Hogarth." "Matthew Henry Barker,(pseud. the Old Sailor, 1790?1846), sailor and writer... served in the Royal Navy... After retiring from the service in 1813, he commanded a hired armed schooner... and was employed ... in carrying dispatches to the English squadrons on the southern coasts of France and Spain. On one occasion he fell into the enemy's hands and was detained for some months as a prisoner of war. In 1825 he became editor of a West India newspaper and was afterwards employed, from 1827 to 1838, in a similar capacity at Nottingham..."Under the pseudonym the Old Sailor, Barker wrote a number of lively and spirited sea tales, very popular in their day. These included such works as Land and Sea Tales (1836); Topsail-Sheet Blocks, or, The Naval Foundling (1838), which ran into several editions; The Naval Club, or, Reminiscences of Service (1843); and The Victory, or, The Wardroom Mess (1844). He was naval editor of the United Service Gazette and a frequent contributor to the Literary Gazette, the Pictorial Times, and Bentley's Miscellany, the last at the time under the editorship of Charles Dickens, who came to value the consistent quality of the contributions of ?the old Sailor?. Barker was a friend of George Cruikshank, who illustrated seven of his works. One of the most attractive of these was the reprint of a series of sketches originally published in the Literary Gazette as ?The Life of a Man-of-War's Man?. The volume edition was called Greenwich Hospital (1826) and was a great success with the public, going into an almost immediate reissue. Two other of his works illustrated by Cruikshank were Tough Yarns (1835), which he dedicated to Captain Marryat, and Nights at Sea (1852). He was also a chief contributor to Cruikshank's Omnibus."Barker felt that his publishers were less than generous with him, and the situation became worse as his sea tales fell out of fashion. He was married, but had increasing difficulty in supporting his family. He died, in poverty, on 29 June 1846" (Oxford DNB).Cohn 53. Abbey, Scenery, 226.

Autograph letter signed "C M v Weber" to conductor Sir George Smart

      - 1 page. Oblong octavo. Dated [London] March 16, 1826. In black ink. In English. Weber sends his correspondent, in all likelihood Sir George Smart, a pianoforte adaptation of the first act of his opera, Oberon."According to your payment, I have the honour to send you hereby the first act of Oberon, adapted for the pianoforte. The 2nd act is also ready, and you can have it in any moment."Slightly worn and soiled; creased at fold and slightly overall; pink tinge to upper portion of leaf; cut from a larger sheet; small round paper label of the Rawkins Collection laid down to upper left verso. When a "veritable mania" for Der Freischütz swept London in 1824, Charles Kemble, manager of the Covent Garden Theatre, invited Weber to London to conduct the opera season and compose two new operas for Covent Garden. "Recognizing that his days were numbered and believing that the potential rewards offered by London would provide a measure of financial security for his family. Weber wrote to Kemble on 7 October to agree to compose an opera based on Wieland's romance Oberon and to go to London for three months in spring 1825. Weber received J.R. Planché's libretto for Oberon in three mailings between 30 December 1824 and 1 February 1825, by which time he had requested a postponement of the première until spring 1826. Weber left Dresden on 16 February 1826 to begin the long trip to London. On 25 February he arrived in Paris, where he spent a week making contacts with prominent musicians and poets, including Auber. Cherubini. [and] Rossini. Weber continued on 2 March, crossing the channel from Calais to Dover on 4 March and reaching London the next day. Staying at the home of George Smart in Great Portland Street, Weber completed the overture to Oberon, finished the music to Act 3, and composed two additional pieces specifically for the leading tenor, John Braham. During the month of rehearsals leading up to the première Weber somehow found the energy also to complete the piano score, conduct four Oratorio Concerts at Covent Garden, conduct at the Philharmonic Society, take part in two benefit concerts and perform in a number of aristocratic salons. The première of Oberon on 12 April 1826 was a great success, with lavish settings and spectacular scenic effects that impressed even Weber, and the opera remained popular throughout the season." Paul Corneilson, et al. in Grove Music Online. Weber died less than two months later, on June 5, 1826. The recipient of this letter was most likely the English conductor, organist and composer Sir George Smart (1776-1867), well-known for his interpretations of Handel's oratorios, and for introducing Mendelssohn's St. Paul to England. Smart was instrumental in negotiating Weber's 1826 visit to London, and who graciously hosted him there (Weber died in his home). His meticulous observations of the musical practices of his time rival those of his predecessor Charles Burney. W.H. Husk and Nicholas Temperley in Grove Music Online.
