On the Influence of Signs in Mathematical Reasoning

1 p.l., 53 pp. Large 4to, orig. blue wrappers, uncut. London: J. Smith, 1826. A remarkable association copy of this extremely rare offprint, linking two of the greatest scientists of the 19th century, and pre-figuring Babbage's later work on his difference and analytical engines. This copy bears the following inscription on the title-page in Babbage's hand: "To M. Gauss from the Author." Additionally, Babbage has written on the upper wrapper: "M. Gauss. Influence of Signs. 3. Ch. Babbage. On the influence of signs in mathematical reasoning." Babbage here presents his views on the importance of symbolic notation in mathematical reasoning. He argues that algebraic symbolism enables one to express ideas more briefly and precisely than in ordinary language; it enables one to consider problems in great generality, rather than only in special cases; and it often enables one to consider simultaneously different cases of a problem that would otherwise be treated separately. The use of mathematical symbols is more efficient, and less prone to error, than other forms of reasoning, as he emphasized particularly when discussing the superiority of algebraic analysis over geometrical reasoning: "[T]he power which we possess by the aid of symbols in compressing into a small compass the several steps of a chain of reasoning, whilst it contributes greatly to abridge the time which our enquiries would otherwise occupy, in difficult cases influences the accuracy of our conclusions: for from the distance which is sometimes interposed [in geometrical reasoning] between the beginning and the end of a chain of reasoning, although the separate parts are sufficiently clear, the whole is often obscure" (p. 8). Babbage also emphasizes the importance of choosing the correct notation: it should remind the user of the nature of the quantity itself (so use 'v' for velocity, 't' for time, and so on); and related quantities should be denoted by similar symbols (so v, v', v'' etc. for the velocities of different bodies in the same problem, for example). Babbage singles out Lagrange's Mecanique Analitique as a model to be emulated in the correct choice of mathematical symbols. The present paper may be seen as part of a chain of ideas that links not only his mathematical and scientific work, but also his views on politics and industry. While a student at Cambridge, Babbage formed, together with Herschel and Peacock, the "Analytical Society." This society was principally concerned with a matter of mathematical symbolism: its aim was famously to support "the principles of pure D'ism in opposition to the Dot-age of the University." Theological overtones apart, this was a plea to replace what Babbage and the other members of the Society viewed as the outdated and inefficient Newtonian fluxional "dot" notation still used in England with the Leibnizian dy/dx notation which was universally employed on the Continent. "For Herschel and Babbage, however, there was more to analysis than a debate about the appropriate mathematical symbols…The key to the success of analytical algebra as they saw it was its efficiency. It was a problem-solving technology that could produce answers quickly and without wasting resources…It was a way of economizing mental labor. As such it could be used to recognize what the most efficient way of proceeding in other enterprises might be too. It could provide the key, for example, to the most profitable way of deploying resources in order to maximize factory production."-Morus, When Physics became King, p. 36. "Babbage's ultimate solution to the problem of how to guarantee efficiency, transparency, and accuracy in reasoning was the same as his solution to the same problem in political economy: replace humans with machinery. Babbage was a firm exponent of the division of labor in factory management and equally enthusiastic for mechanization as the ultimate realization of the principle. His primary concern throughout the 1820s and beyond was to work on his projected calculating and analytical engines…The calculating engine would replace the human drudge work for calculating mathematical tables to be used (for example) in actuarial work and in astronomy. The analytical engine would go further - it would replace the human capacity to reason as well."-ibid., pp. 37-38. When developing his difference engine Babbage again realized the importance of symbolism: in "A Method of Expressing by Signs the Action of Machinery" (Philosophical Transactions: 1826) he developed a special notation, related to Boolean algebra (which was developed later), to accurately describe the working of the engine. Babbage first met Gauss in the course of a European tour he undertook starting at the end of 1827. After travelling through Holland, Belgium, Germany and Italy, Babbage arrived in Berlin in September 1828 to meet Alexander von Humboldt, then regarded as the greatest scientist of the century. At the time, Humboldt was organizing the seventh annual Congress of German scientists. Babbage was present when the Congress opened on 18 September 1828, with Gauss among the several hundred scientists and luminaries present. It was there that Babbage met Gauss. Babbage's paper was read at a meeting of the Cambridge Philosophical Society on 16 December 1821, but it was not published in its Transactions until more than five years later (Vol. 2, 1827, pp. 325-377). The item offered here is a very rare pre-publication offprint, dated 1826 on the title page. In very fine and fresh condition, entirely uncut. Preserved in a handsome blue morocco-backed box. With the stamps of the "Gauss-Bibliothek" (also on upper wrapper) and the Royal Observatory at Göttingen on title with release stamp date 15 October 1951. ? D.S.B., I, pp. 354-56.       N. p., 30. IV. 1826. - 8vo. 3 pp. on bifolium. A secretarial letter signed by Sir Humphry Davy ("H. Davy") as President of the Royal Society, to one "Sir", marked "Private & confidential", explaining that, as President, he is unable to interfere in elections, mentioning that Fellows are divided into two classes, "working scientific men" and "Patrons of Science", going on to explain that professional men should offer "some paper or communication which may imply qualification" though "this rule has not been so strictly attended to as it ought to have been". - At this time, a year before Davy gave up the Presidency, the Royal Society was "teetering between remaining a gentleman's club and becoming an academy of science. Davy favoured judicious modernizing [.] He made publication an important factor in election, but, lacking the social status of Banks, he was unable to force his will upon the fellows, and found himself between hostile camps" (David Knight, ODNB). - Two light stains, and some slight damage to edges.         Collection of correspondence relating to Telford and road building between 1825 and 1828, 40 letters and 13 copy letters.

      - A comprehensive collection of documents and letters concerning the legalities of a road improvement from Ashbourne to Leek, as part of the London to Carlisle road system. The letters are to and from a solicitor, John Cruso, who had been appointed to manage the legalities to buy the land necessary for the new road to run through. The correspondence includes nine letters between John Cruso and his son, also John, who was a barrister at Temple, London, and gives some indication of some of the frustrations in progressing Telford's project. '. Frank must therefore set off immediately and get the consents . of the Landowners . according to Telfords plan and book of reference as that must be lodged with the plan & if he cannot do all Rider or someone must help him as till we get it we can not put in the petition .' [19 February 1826]'. Telford's men had instructions not to go to any of the Landowners. Mr Hart is clearly wanting for tho' it may cut thro' some of his best Land it makes him a road to his property to which he has not now. .'[27 February, 1826]'. I have to pay Mr Telford £60 for the plans etc, the expense of lodging the plans with the clerks of the peace cost more than £10 so that with my expenses I shall be more than £100 out of pocket if I am not paid by the Ashbourne funds.'[copy letter, 4 April 1826]Telford was given the nickname 'Colossus of Roads' by his friend, the poet Robert Southey. Among his main achievements in road making were the London to Holyhead and Bangor to Chester roads as engineer to the Holyhead road commissioners from 1815, and the Glasgow to Carlisle, Lanarkshire and highlands of Scotland roads as engineer to the highland roads commissioners from 1803. At about the time of this correspondence, Telford also advised on the 100 mile Warsaw to Brzesc major road towards Moscow, which was completed in 1825.

Considerations on the state of the currency.

London: John Murray, 1826. 8vo., iv + 128 + (2) + 129 - 152pp., title and one or two preliminary pages a little foxed, bound in the late 20th century in plain boards with handwritten title label on upper cover. A very good copy. First edition. Goldsmiths 25024. Kress C.1805. Stephens p.64. Einaudi 5653. Mattioli 3629. Tooke's detailed examination of the causes which might affect prices. He concluded that price variations were due to circumstances directly connected with the commodities themselves, and not to alterations in the quantity of money. 'The work was at first meant as a sequel to the first part of the High and Low Prices>, published 1822, but he afterwards devoted it more especially to the consideration of the events between that date and 1826. He argues that the Bank ought to have unloaded, at any rate the greater part of, the 'Dead Weight Annuity' as soon as the increased issues for payment upon the purchases produced a bad effect on the exchanges, or to have raised the rate as a means of decreasing the redundant issue. Also that the non-publication of the Bank's accounts introduced too large an element of uncertainty, and suggests the obvious remedy. The greatest evils, however, were the precarious state of the country issues. 'Every country Banker ought to be called upon to give some pledge of his ability to pay on demand the Notes which he may be permitted to issue'. Further, 'there is one part of that circulation which ought not upon any footing or with any modification to be any longer tolerated. I mean the Notes under £5'. Some Country Banks grumbled if the public asked for gold; he rightly says: 'If there is any feeling of the harshness of demanding coin for the Notes of a Bank, such Notes are more or less imperfectly convertible'.' [T.A. Stephens, A contribution to the bibliography of the Bank of England>, 1897, pp.64-5].

Sur l'identité des deux espèces nominales d'Ornithorhynque; (Lu à l'Académie des Sciences le 18 décembre 1826)

Annales des Sciences Naturelles, Paris 1826 - 12 pp., caption-title; tipped into a modern binding of quarter linen and boards. The renowned French zoologist Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire on the platypus: an important study, read to the Académie des Sciences and set up in print for publication in the appropriate learned journal. This is a very rare separate offprint (paginated 1 to 8 for separate issue rather than simply being clipped from its journal version).Saint-Hilaire here discusses research into the platypus made possible by the delivery of a brace of the monotremes by Hyacinthe de Bougainville, commander of the Thétis expedition just returned to Paris from the southern ocean. He discusses work by Shaw in England, reports by Péron from the Baudin expedition, and work by other eminent naturalists in Europe. The second half of the text is the most controversial, occupied by vigorous debate about ideas promulgated by the German naturalist Meckel in his ground-breaking Ornithorhynchi Paradoxi published just weeks previously. Meckel's first full separate study of the animal concentrated on the animal's reproductive system and especially the mammary glands of the female. Saint-Hilaire objected strenuously to this approach, asserting that the relevant glands were in fact odoriferous and designed only to attract a mate. Saint-Hilaire was, of course, plain wrong, but that didn't become clear for decades. Meanwhile in the furious debates about the classification of the platypus of the 1820s and 1830s, Saint-Hilaire occupied centre-stage. (Some years ago we handled the sale of a collection of his manuscript drafts and notes on the subject, which showed just how controversial the whole subject became). It was Saint-Hilaire himself who had coined the term "Monotremata" as early as 1803. He had been appointed professor of quadrupeds, cetaceans, birds, reptiles and fish at the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle in 1793 at the young age of twenty-one. He travelled with Napoleon's campaign to Egypt, but it was his long study of the museum's mammalian collection that made him famous, and led to comparisons with Cuvier (although the two men fell out in 1829). During his tenure he published a series of articles and monographs on the platypus, stubbornly holding that it must be a vertebrate, and refusing to believe that it could possibly be a mammal.         Osman. Spjevagne vitescko. Dubrovnik, Antun Martekini, 1826.

1826. Large 8vo. 3 vols. 201, xxiv pp. 268 pp. 270, [1] pp. With bilingual woodcut printing privilege on last leaf recto of vol. I. Printed original wrappers. In cloth case. First edition; extremely rare. "Gundulic's poem 'Osman' (written 1626; first published 1826) was the outstanding achievement of the Renaissance flowering of art and literature that gave Dubrovnik the name of the 'South Slavonic Athens'" (Encyclopaedia Britannica). The Serbo-Croatian verse epic by Ivan Gundulic, the "leading voice" (ibid.) of Croatian national literature, tells the story of the Turkish Sultan Osman II (1604-22), who ascended the throne at the age of 15 (replacing his incompetent uncle Mustapha I), but was defeated by the Poles at Khotin and was murdered by Daud Pasha in a 1622 janissary rebellion. Within Dalmatian literature, Gundulic (1589-1638) "is the first to set a contemporary subject at the center of a literary, heroic-idyllic world, replete with the entire gamut of contemporary literature's popular motifs" (cf. KNLL VII, 77). The work, which was to give Christianity hope of a near end of Ottoman power, was created between 1622 and 1638 but remained unprinted for two centuries: "The epic poem in 20 cantos is kept in crossed-rhymed quatrains [...] Gundulic's epic appeared in print only two hundred years after the poet's death. Still, as it was circulated in numerous manuscript copies, it was of fundamental importance for the development of the poetic language of Croat Baroque. In the first half of the 19th century the poets of the Croat Renaissance found in Gundulic's 'Osman' the model for their linguistic expression and an example for their own ethico-political principles in the Croatian people's struggle for self-determination" (ibid.). - A remarkably fresh, uncut copy in the original wrappers as issued to the Italian book trade (with a detailed "Avviso" concerning the book's publishing history and the terms and conditions of sale and distribution). Some wrappers have large defects to the spines; occasional insignificant brown-spotting inside. Very rare; no copy in trade records of the past 50 years; no copy in German library catalogs. British Library and Bibliothéque Nationale both only own the Italian translation, published by Martekini in Ragusa (Dubrovnik) the following year. Only five copies in OCLC (Yale, Chicago, Indiana, Harvard, Columbia). KNLL VII, 77f. (KLL 7054f.). Cf. also Zdenko Zlatar. The Slavic epic: Gundulic's Osman (= Balkan studies 4), New York 1995.

Autograph letter signed ("Say"). Paris, 5. VIII. 1826.

1826. Large 4to. 1 p. with the integral address leaf attached. In French, to the engineer Mr. Collier in Ghent, writing in part: "Here I am back home at last, where it seems I will not be disturbed. I saw the chancellor of France two times, the President of the Court of Peers, which is the only one with the jurisdiction to judge me, and it seems that they have no desire at all to treat me rigorously. I will probably be pardoned on the King s birthday at the beginning of November. I thought you would receive this news with interest, and I ask you to have the kindness to pass it on to your son in London, whom I won t write until later. The present letter has another purpose, as well, i.e., to solicit your good offices for having several prospectuses of my work on the judicial institutions of England &c. distributed in Ghent, particularly at the school; they will reach you with one of the next couriers [...]". - Say is best known for his law of markets, which postulates that supply creates its own demand. He attributed depression, therefore, not to a general deficiency in demand but rather to temporary overproduction for some markets and underproduction for others. This imbalance must automatically adjust itself, he believed, because overproducers have to redirect their production to conform with consumers preferences or be forced out of business. Say's law remained a central tenet of orthodox economics until the Great Depression of the 1930s. An obvious implication of Say s law is that the capitalist system is self-regulating; thus there is no need for government intervention in economic affairs.
