        Miscellaneous Poems.

London: William Benbow,, 1826. Duodecimo (154 x 94 mm). Original boards, titles to front board in black, printed label to spine, untrimmed. Housed in a brown cloth slipcase and chemise. Boards slightly worn and soiled, front joint skilfully repaired, spine worn with minor loss to head, light browning and spotting to text block. A very good copy. First edition of this very scarce early collected edition of Shelley's poetry, in the rare original boards. This Benbow piracy selects Shelley's poetry from various previously published editions, collecting mainly from the Posthumous Poems edition of 1824, but with some notable examples drawn from earlier publications. Excepting perhaps the Posthumous Poems, this piracy constitutes the first selected edition of Shelley, and contains such poems as "Hymn to Intellectual Beauty", "Lines on the Death of Napoleon", "Love's Philosophy", "Mont Blanc", "Mutability", "Stanzas Written in Dejection, near Naples", "To the Moon", and "To a Skylark". This edition is fairly well represented institutionally but is rare in the trade - only one copy is recorded at auction in this millennium, and indeed the last copy in boards was in 1984.

        Miscellaneous Poems.

London: William Benbow,, 1826. Duodecimo (146 x 94 mm). Early-20th-century red half morocco by Truslove & Hanson of Oxford Street, London, spine gilt in compartments with titles direct, pink cloth sides with gilt rules, occult arms gilt to front board, top edge gilt, others barely trimmed, marbled endpapers. A few corners nicked, some minor marks to the morocco, some minor spots and toning to margins within, but a very good copy indeed. First edition of this very scarce early collected edition of Shelley's poetry, appealingly bound with a mysterious occult emblem to front board (flaming skull-and-cross-bones, snakes holding a heart, crowned with a crown and star) and bookplate (skull with a worm, tantalisingly initialled DMF). A Visit to Columbia in the Years 1822 & 1823.

Philadelphia: Printed by Thomas H. Palmer, for the author,, 1826. By Laguayra and Caracas, over the Cordillera to Bogota, and thence by the Magdalena to Cartagena. Octavo. Original white paper backed grey boards, titles printed black to paper label to spine, edges untrimmed. Aquatint frontispiece and plate. Stamp of the American Philosophical Society to the title page, their bookplate to front pastedown. Wear to extremities, rubbing to boards, short closed tear to front free binder's blank; a very good copy. First edition. This work, "written as a political travelogue", provides a comprehensive history and geographical account of the region. Duane, who was briefly Secretary of the Treasury in 1833, argues in this work for the "future commercial and political importance of South America to the United States". Duane had applied in 1820 for the role of United States ambassador to the new Columbian republic, a role he was denied due to being involved in a deal to supply arms to a number of South American revolutionaries, which Monroe described as "unworthy and dishonourable". The journey documented in this work was not as a government official but rather in the employment of a Philadelphian merchant Jacob Idler, who had hired Duane to secure payment for a number of goods and arms Idler had sent to Columbia during their struggle with Spain. An uncommon book with four copies traced at auction and just one copy traced on OCLC.

Journal de voyage en Egypte et en Nubie 1826". Autograph manuscript signed.

Egypt, 1826. - 4to (235 x 185 mm). 177 pp. Contemporary wrappers (wanting spine). Ms. title and name on front cover. An early 19th century egyptologist's fascinating travel notes documenting his journey through the Nile valley, profusely illustrated with more than 230 sketches showing hieroglyphs and Greek and Coptic inscriptions. At the age of 27, Louis Vaucelle (1798-1851) undertook an expedition to Egypt to explore the banks of the Nile from Cairo to Aswan. He set out from Marseille on 27 January 1826 and reached the second cataract on 27 May. In his journal he accurately reproduces all cartouches and inscriptions of the temples, tombs and palaces visited up to the first cataract south of Aswan. He gives the condition of monuments (sometimes mere ruins), identifies traces of Christian chapels and churches, translates hieroglyphs dedicated both to pharaohs and Roman emperors, indicates (in cursive script) several Arabic words and names, and mentions the orientalists who preceded him: his mentor Champollion as well as Denon, Maillé, Belzoni, and Niebuhr. Among the temples and sites he describes are Ipsamboul, Edfu, Dakka ("un des mieux conservés"), Thèbes ("Louqsor"), Karnak, Denderah Assouan, Elephantine and Philae as well as the pyramids of Giza, Cleopatra's Needle, the Sphinx (the head of which is said to be "extrêmement mutilée"), Alexandria, and the Nile Delta. The final fifty-odd pages are devoted to contemporary Egyptian cities, their people, and their Arab, Jewish and Coptic traditions. As Vaucelle notes, Coptic Christians are free to practice their religion due to the unrivalled tolerance of the Muslim faith ("tant il est vrai qu’il n’y a pas de religion plus tolérante que la religion mahométane"). He also provides details of medical operations such as castration, circumcision, and excision, as well as of the "Kalisch" festivities held in Cairo at the time of the opening of the dikes. - Louis de Vaucelles de Ravigny was trained by Jean-François Champollion, who in 1824 published his "Précis du système hiéroglyphique des anciens Égyptiens". Apart from the present travel journal he also produced a "Chronologie des monuments antiques de la Nubie" (1829), based on the interpretation of the royal legends contained in the hieroglyphic reliefs, a book in which he pays tribute to the German egyptologist François-Christian Gau. - Slight fraying to edges; wants wrappers' spine. A fine survival. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Carta esferica del Rio de la Plata en la America del Sur, levantada por Don Andres Oyarvide

A rare map of the Rio de la Plata, wonderfully engraved by Besnes Irigoyen. Aizpurua (1774 - 1833) was a Spanish navy officer and pilot; he moved to Buenos Aires at a young age, the city still being the seat of the Viceroyalty of La Plata. Once there he was appointed as pilot of the Bergatin Tigre and began his cartographic activities mapping the region. During the wars of independence he sided with the revolutionaries and stayed in Buenos Aires; his knowledge of the region -he having mapped a large portion of it- and his understanding of hydrographical reality and navigation of the River Plate granted him the commission from Brown as Chief Pilot of the argentine fleet during the war against Brazil. For a river such as the Plata, said knowledge may be decisive in the outcome of the engagement. His charts, under the recommendation of Brown himself, were acquired by the Nation and compiled into one chart -this one- by Andres Oyarbide. The map includes two cartouches and inset maps of the Port of Montevideo and Maldonado, as well as coastal profiles; historical explanation of the "Derrota de Montevideo a Buenos Ayres por el N. Del Banco Chico" and "Derrotas por el S. del Banco Chico, o Costa del sur". It was drawn by Manuel Besnes e Irigoyen (1789 - 1865), a celebrated Uruguayan painter, which accounts for its artistic beauty.

The English Spy: An Original Work, Characteristic, Satirical and Humorous. Comprising Scenes and Sketches in Every Rank of Society, Being Portraits of the Illustrious, Eminent, Eccentric, and Notorious.

London: Sherwood, Jones and Co. [through 1826], 1825. First Edition. Supposed First Issue (with plate 28 , vol. I, misdated 1284 and p.222, vol. II, blank) of one of the finest English color plate books, complete in two volumes. (Abbey and Tooley disagree, with Abbey arguing that these points are without bibliographical value.) Royal 8vo: xiii,417; xv,[1],399,[1]pp, with 71 hand-colored aquatints by Robert Cruikshank, Rowlandson, and others; 1 uncolored woodcut plate and 74 wood engravings in text. Bound in full crimson levant morocco, covers framed with French fillets, elaborately gilt-tooled spines and dentelles, marbled end papers, all edges gilt. the binding exquisite. Light bumping and wear to several corners, mild offsetting from plates, very occasional foxing, still an excellent copy inside and out, the binding exquisite, the plates vividly colored. Abbey Life 325. Tooley 504. Prideaux, p. 310. Martin Hardie, pp. 191-92. Originally published in 24 monthly parts, The English Spy provides a vivid panorama of English high- and low-life, "a veritable chronique scandaleuse of the time. In the pages of this extraordinary work figure all the notables of the day, either openly or under slight disguise" (Hardie). Described by Prideaux as "perhaps the most daring book ever published," as many of the characters, including Lord Byron, Beau Brummell, Pierce Egan, Pea-green Hayne, Henry Brougham, and the Duke of Wellington, were instantly recognizable to its early readers. Most of the plates are by Robert Cruikshank, who figures in the book under the pseudonym "Robert Transit"; two plates are by Thomas Rowlandson, notably "R.—A.'s [Royal Academicians] of Genius Reflecting on the True Line of Beauty at the Life Academy" (featuring portraits of West, Shee, Haydon, Lawrence, Westmacott and Flaxman); a few others were contributed by G. M. Brighty and T. Wageman. The numerous in-text woodcuts are after Cruikshank, Rowlandson, Gillray and Finlay. The lively text is by the journalist (and blackmailer) C. M. Westmacott, notorious as a muckraker and for extorting large sums of money from victims, including royalty, eager to keep their names out of print. N. B.       London: C. Baldwyn & James Robins, 1826. Later edition. 2 engraved title-pages and 18 of 20 plates by George Cruikshank printed on India paper, each mounted on heavy laid paper. xii, 240; iv, 256 pp. plus [1] ad leaf (verso blank). Lacking gathering "B" of volume I (pp. 1-24) and 2 plates contained in that gathering at (at pp. 13 and p. 20); without ads. 1 vols. 12mo (7-1/2 x 4-1/4 inches). THE ORIGINAL UNBOUND SHEETS, UNCUT. Laid in full red morocco slipcase and chemise. Bookplate of the great Cruikshank collector, William Hartmann Woodin. Cruikshank, George. UNBOUND and UNCUT!!! The Woodin Copy. The unbound sheets of an unidentified, early edition with plates on India paper, of one of Cruikshank's early masterworks, whose etchings Ruskin described as "unrivalled in masterfulness of touch since Rembrandt." These plates "established Cruikshank's reputation as an illustrator and as the foremost depicter of fairlyland, a romantic realm of castles, marvels, and strange creatures described by one contemporary artist as 'but a few inches high.' with transparent bodies and so delicate a form 'that a dew-drop, when they dance on it, trembles only, but never breaks.'" - Patten, GEORGE CRUIKSHANK, Vol. I, pp. 247-248.Cohn notes that "a few copies of the first edition, second issue, are to be found with the plates taken on India paper;" yet this copy, with a volume I title-page of 1823, and with the plate on India paper, doesn't correspond to either Cohn's first or second edition. An intriguing copy, indeed, of a Cruikshank cornerstone, from a famous collection.         Landschaft bei Papesting. Bleistift auf Papier

      - Anton Doll (1826 München 1887). Landschaft bei Papesting. 1880 .

Early and Significant Autograph Letter Signed to portrait painter Charles Bird King, 4to, New York, March 30, 1826. Unpublished

      - Our letter holds particular biographical significance including the first public signature with Cooper's now familiar name, J. Fenimore Cooper. Here he signs, "J. Fenimore-Cooper," separating the middle and last names with a hyphen. Prior to this, a letter to his publisher, Carey & Lea, dated April 4, 1826, showed the earliest known example of his signature using "Fenimore." Our letter predates this by eight days. In addition, our letter reveals other new biographical facts according to Cooper scholar and biographer Dr. Wayne Franklin. Cooper visited Washington, D.C. in March 1826 ostensibly to seek a diplomatic appointment preceding his visit to France. Cooper left for France June 1, 1826. However, our letter reveals that while in Washington, Cooper met the artist, Charles Bird King, who wanted to paint Cooper's portrait, why Cooper missed his sitting with King, and when Cooper left Washington to return home to New York. Cooper stayed in Washington until at least March 26, 1826. His time in the city had been verified up to March 12 with uncertainty about his departure date. This letter also indicates that King wanted to paint Cooper's portrait and the reason that Cooper missed his sitting. Cooper was at the Navy Department for, "some business that called me early to the Navy Department, where, in fact, I was so much engaged, both on that and on the succeeding day, as entirely to forget that I had a face, much less that any one was willing to transfer it to the canvass[sic]?.". Full Text: "Dear Sir, I left under circumstances, that, I feel, render some explanation necessary. You may remember that I appointed Friday as the next day of sitting. On that day I had some business that called me early to the Navy Department, where, in fact, I was so much engaged, both on that and on the succeeding day, as entirely to forget that I had a face, much less that any one was willing to transfer it to the canvass[sic]. However ungracious the apology may seem, I think it fairest to state the simple truth. I did not recollect that I had promised to sit, after leaving you, until I saw your habitation on Sunday morning, as I was leaving Washington in the stage. I would not have you impute this failure of memory, to any indifference to the compliment you were disposed to pay me, or to any want of a suitable degree of self love on my part, by [for "but"?] to the engagements, which pressed upon me, on the eve of my departure. I had many things of importance to myself to do and to see done, before I left the Country, and which could only be done, at that time & in my own person. I find Dunlap a good deal advanced in his picture, which certainly promises very well. He has painted the head of Franklin, of which I spoke to you, in very capital style. Indeed, I hardly know a better portrait, anywhere. It makes me regret his age, to look at it. It seems we are to have rival exhibitions this spring, and I hope the public will reap some of the ordinary fruits of competition; though, I confess, that, in my own poor judgment there seems some little difference between the management of a line of stages, and a School for the Fine Arts-Very Resp[ectfully] Your Obl[iged] Ser[van]t, J. Fenimore Cooper." In the lower left corner he writes his correspondent's name, "Mr. King." Condition: Normal soiling and folds in tact, paper is evenly sunned.

        Miscellaneous Poems.

London: William Benbow, 1826 - Duodecimo (154 x 94 mm). Graniss 87.         Tunis et ses environs.Paris, Quantin, 1890. Large 4to (31 x 24 cm). With 150 detailed chromolithographs (most in the text; some on separate plates), with extra ca. 100 duplicates without text of the illustrations. Contemporary half morocco.

Vicaire, Manuel de l'amateur, p. 946; not in Atabey, Colas; Hiler; Lipperheide. First edition of a beautifully colour-illustrated account of the city of Tunis and its surroundings, by the French watercolour artist Charles Lallemand (1826-1904), who was responsible for both the illustrations and the text. The text is divided into 20 chapters covering various subjects, such as mosques, religion, antiquities, coffeeshops and Muslim women, all with relevant illustrations. Many include Islamic decorative patterns in addition to views of architectural or cultural sites and costume prints, and they document a great deal of Muslim culture that has since been lost. In the present copy nearly two-thirds of the chromolithographs are present in two versions, one with letterpress text as usual, and one without letterpress text. The book was re-printed or re-issued in 1892. With occasional very minor foxing and with the half-title slightly browned. The binding is very good, with only the spine slightly faded and a small tear in the marbled paper. Fine copy.

Slavenskie vechera [Slavic Evenings], parts one and two (complete)

V Tipografii Aleksandra Smirdina, St. Petersburg 1826 - 12mo (16.5 × 10 cm). Contemporary calf; [4], IV, 149, [1] and [1], 141, [1] pp. Binding rubbed to joints and edges; small wormhole to upper board; internally very good. First full, or expanded, edition of this early historical novel by Vasilii Narezhnyi (1780-1825), today considered a key predecessor of Nikolai Gogol. the first part was published in 1809, and this stand-alone edition, supplemented with related short stories that had appeared in various literary journals, was compiled after his death in 1825. KVK, OCLC show the copies at Madison Wisconsin (only vol. 2) and at Universitäts-Bibliothek Sachsen-Anhalt (Halle). The Foreign Review, in 1826, notes the appearance of Slavic Evenings and finds that it "evinces the popularity of this interesting collection of traditional and historical narratives. they are written in a kind of poetical prose, and have a considerable degree of Ossianic colouring, which well befits their subjects" (vol. 1, 311-12). Influenced by French writer Alain-René Lesage, Narezhnyi made use of picaresque literary techniques and satire to depict Russian byt (everyday life). While less known today, he was widely read in his time. Narezhnyi succeeded in combining Russian subject matter with European narrative form, thus advancing the development of the Russian novel. His interest in regional, especially ukrainian motifs, and the attention to the gray and uncouth sides of Russian life, make him a pioneer of the Russian novel of everyday life. With its occasionally unrefined style, Narezhnyi's prose also marked a departure from the Sentimentalist tradition toward Russian realism, and he is justly seen as an important predecessor of Nikolai Gogol.

The Last of the Mohicans. A Narrative of 1757. By the author of the 'The Spy','The Pilot', 'The Pioneers', &c. &c.

London John Miller New Bridge Street 1826 - First English edition, 3 volumes, 8vo., vi, 237; [4], 276; [4], 295pp., correct half-titles to vols. 2 & 3 (not issued with volume one), paper lightly age-toned, near-fine, near contemporary half-crushed morocco over marble boards, a little rubbed and chipped but otherwise an exceptionally good set. The U. S. first edition (Philadelphia) of the same year comprised two volumes with the U. K. edition following about two months later. The English edition consisted of 1250 copies, set from advance sheets forwarded to London as they came off the press in Philadelphia. James Fenimore Cooper is considered to be the first true American novelist. His most popular work, The Last of the Mohicans, has remained one of the most widely read novels throughout the world and it, along with the other four novels that make up The Leatherstocking Tales, has profoundly influenced the way many view both the American Indians and the frontier period of American history. Deep in the forests of upper New York State, the brave woodsman Hawkeye (Natty Bumppo) and his loyal Mohican friends Chingachgook and Uncas become embroiled in the bloody battles of the French and Indian War. The abduction of the beautiful Munro sisters by hostile savages, the treachery of the renegade brave Magua, the ambush of innocent settlers, and the thrilling events that lead to the final tragic confrontation between rival war parties create a vivd picture of life on the frontier. As the idyllic wilderness gives way to the forces of civilization, the novel presents a moving portrayal of a vanishing race and the end of its way of life in the great American forests.

1st Edition. Hardcover. Good. FIRST EDITION of the experimental proof of Ohm's law, "the fundamental law of electric circuits" (Dibner 63). Ohm "made a study of the laws of galvanic currents, and while investigating the relative conductivity of metals finally discovered the relation known as 'Ohm's law,' which underlies all electrical theory and measurement. The experimental proof of this law was first published in a paper in Schweigger's Journal fur Chemie und Physik, vol. xlvi. (1826), under the title of Bestimmung des Gesetzes, nach welchem Metalle die Contactelektricität leiten" (Peck and Colby, The New International Encyclopedia). "The following year Ohm published a book, entitled Die Galvanische Kette, mathematisch bearbeitet (Berlin, 1827). It contained a theoretic deduction of Ohm's law, and became far more widely known than his article of 1826, giving the experimental deduction. In fact, his experimental paper was so little known that the impression long prevailed and still exists that he based his law on theory and never established it empirically. This misapprehension accounts, perhaps, for the unfavourable reception of Ohm's conclusions" (Cajori, A History of Physics). In: Journal für Chemie und Physik. Hrsg. v. J. S. C. Schweigger u. W. Schweigger-Seidel, vol. 46, pp. 137-166. Halle: 1826. The whole volume offered. Octavo, modern cloth. Some dampstaining throughout; occasional browning. Provenance: with library and de-accession stamps on series title from the prestigious Gmelin Institute (after 1996, part of the Max Planck Institute).

Only one copy of Jeux de l'enfance in institutional holdings worldwide, i.e. Gordon Ray's at the Morgan Library, though Ray, alas, does not mention it in his The Illustrated Book In France. The album was issued with six plates by Aubry, yet a few copies have turned up in trade with the two thematically related Boilly lithographs bound-in as here. This album was issued by Delpech as a compilation of unsold prints, a common practice of contemporary printmakers and sellers, or assembled by a collector. The contemporary manners and customs of Parisian couples, illustrated with great charm and wry, understated humor by Swiss genre painter and lithographer Jean Gabriel Scheffer (1797-1876), who studied with Regnault and was a friend of Corot, Aligny, and Léopold Robert. His work was shown at the Salon de Paris beginning in 1822; his reputation as a designer of many wryly humorous lithographs, typically signed "J.S.," was firm. The son of a wood-carver, Louis Léopold Boilly lived in Douai until he was seventeen years of age, when he went to Arras to receive instruction in trompe-l'oeil painting at Domenica Doncre before moving to Paris in 1785. Between 1789 and 1791 he executed eight small scenes on moralizing and amorous subjects for the Avignon collector Esprit-Claude-François Calvet (1728-1810), including The Visit (1789; Saint-Omer, Musée Hôtel Sandelin). He exhibited at the Salon between 1791 and 1824 and received a gold medal at the Salon in 1804. These paintings thoroughly observed and reflected all aspects of urban life, its costumes and its habits, between the revolutionary period and the Restoration. In 1823, Boilly produced a series of humorous lithographies entitled Grimaces. In 1833, at a time when his popularity was declining, he was admitted to the Légion d'honneur and the Institut de France.
