A Poem on the Pleasures and Advantages of Botanical Pursuits, with Notes; and other Poems. By a Friend to Youth, addressed to her Pupils.

Printed by Philip Rose [c. 1826]., Bristol - First edition. A provincially-printed volume by botany teacher and Quaker Sarah Hoare.Hoare's poem first appeared as an addendum to Priscilla Wakefield's Introduction to Botany (1818), but is here accompanied by sundry other poems and an introduction. In this, which is addressed to her pupils, Hoare emphasises her indebtedness to Wakefield's work-'it was the first book of the kind I had read on the subject'-and explains that a change in her financial circumstances has necessitated her publication of the present work. Hoare taught the daughters of Quakers in Ireland for many years before returning to Bristol where she continued the work. For her, 'botany was connected with the ideas of personal and social usefulness' and the work takes on a maternal tone, with the medicinal properties of plants emphasised that they might be of use to those students of hers who have had children of their own. As Sam George has recognised, Hoare's poem 'posits a trustworthy science reliant on Quakerly practices of proof and honesty'.COPAC lists just four copies in the UK, at the British Library, Durham, Society of Friends and St. Andrews, to which WorldCat adds Haverford College, Miami, Stanford, UCLA, and Yale, in the US. 12mo (175 x 111 mm), pp. [2], xi, [1], 134; a very good copy in original pale drab boards; contemporary annotated slip tipped-in.         67 studies of orchids.Cervené Pechy (Bohemia), 1885-1889. 67 drawings of orchids in coloured gouaches on thin laminated board, mostly with a smooth grey surface (32 x 24 cm; the painted images about 14 to 28 cm tall), most captioned with the Latin name, place of origin, name of a botanical collection or reference and the month of the drawing. Some drawings dated and monogrammed by the artist. Each drawing with a tissue attached to the back to protect the next drawing in the stack. The drawings loose in a half red morocco clamshell box.

      - A collection of 67 fine orchid drawings in coloured gouaches, clearly forming a series in a consistent style and format, commissioned by Baron Theodor Karel Josef Hruby z Gelenj (1826-1914) at Petschkau (Pecky) castle in Bohemia (Cervené Pecky, east of Prague), where he assembled the largest and most important collection of orchids in the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the end of the 19th century. Each is meticulously drawn in coloured gouaches on thin laminated board. The board used for most of the drawings has a smooth grey surface, but that used for a few has a light brown, dark brown, light blue or cream-coloured surface to show the orchid to best effect. A few are executed in landscape format. The caption to nearly every drawing gives the Latin name, the place of origin (many from Brazil or elsewhere in South America, Central America, Mexico, Africa and Southeast Asia), the name of one of a dozen botanical collections or catalogues (most often Lindley or Reichenbach) and the month of the drawing. Little is known about the artist, normally cited as Caroline Maschek (1857-1938), who would have been only about 30 at the time. She is said to have been born in Prague, so her name was probably Germanized from the Czech Karolina Masek. She is thought to have prepared some 300 drawings of Baron Hruby's orchids. Some survive at the Imperial palace Schloss Schönbrunn in Vienna, which apparently acquired them in 1916. A collection from the same series as the present, but containing 59 drawings compared with the present 67, brought $92,500 at auction in 2011.With an occasional small marginal tear, not approaching the drawing, but generally in fine condition. The box also fine. A stunning set of drawings of orchids from the gardens of one of the greatest orchid collectors.

Early and Significant Autograph Letter Signed to portrait painter Charles Bird King, 4to, New York, March 30, 1826. Unpublished

Our letter holds particular biographical significance including the first public signature with Cooper's now familiar name, J. Fenimore Cooper. Here he signs, "J. Fenimore-Cooper," separating the middle and last names with a hyphen. Prior to this, a letter to his publisher, Carey & Lea, dated April 4, 1826, showed the earliest known example of his signature using "Fenimore." Our letter predates this by eight days. In addition, our letter reveals other new biographical facts according to Cooper scholar and biographer Dr. Wayne Franklin. Cooper visited Washington, D.C. in March 1826 ostensibly to seek a diplomatic appointment preceding his visit to France. Cooper left for France June 1, 1826. However, our letter reveals that while in Washington, Cooper met the artist, Charles Bird King, who wanted to paint Cooper's portrait, why Cooper missed his sitting with King, and when Cooper left Washington to return home to New York. Cooper stayed in Washington until at least March 26, 1826. His time in the city had been verified up to March 12 with uncertainty about his departure date. This letter also indicates that King wanted to paint Cooper's portrait and the reason that Cooper missed his sitting. Cooper was at the Navy Department for, "some business that called me early to the Navy Department, where, in fact, I was so much engaged, both on that and on the succeeding day, as entirely to forget that I had a face, much less that any one was willing to transfer it to the canvass[sic]....". Full Text: "Dear Sir, I left under circumstances, that, I feel, render some explanation necessary. You may remember that I appointed Friday as the next day of sitting. On that day I had some business that called me early to the Navy Department, where, in fact, I was so much engaged, both on that and on the succeeding day, as entirely to forget that I had a face, much less that any one was willing to transfer it to the canvass[sic]. However ungracious the apology may seem, I think it fairest to state the simple truth. I did not recollect that I had promised to sit, after leaving you, until I saw your habitation on Sunday morning, as I was leaving Washington in the stage. I would not have you impute this failure of memory, to any indifference to the compliment you were disposed to pay me, or to any want of a suitable degree of self love on my part, by [for "but"?] to the engagements, which pressed upon me, on the eve of my departure. I had many things of importance to myself to do and to see done, before I left the Country, and which could only be done, at that time & in my own person. I find Dunlap a good deal advanced in his picture, which certainly promises very well. He has painted the head of Franklin, of which I spoke to you, in very capital style. Indeed, I hardly know a better portrait, anywhere. It makes me regret his age, to look at it. It seems we are to have rival exhibitions this spring, and I hope the public will reap some of the ordinary fruits of competition; though, I confess, that, in my own poor judgment there seems some little difference between the management of a line of stages, and a School for the Fine Arts-Very Resp[ectfully] Your Obl[iged] Ser[van]t, J. Fenimore Cooper." In the lower left corner he writes his correspondent's name, "Mr. King." Condition: Normal soiling and folds in tact, paper is evenly sunned.

A Visit to Columbia in the Years 1822 & 1823. By Laguayra and Caracas, over the Cordillera to Bogota, and thence by the Magdalena to Cartagena.

Philadelphia: Printed by Thomas H. Palmer, for the author, 1826 - Octavo. Original white paper backed grey boards, titles printed black to paper label to spine, edges untrimmed. Stamp of the American Philosophical Society to the title page, their bookplate to front pastedown. Wear to extremities, rubbing to boards, short closed tear to front free binder's blank; a very good copy. Aquatint frontispiece and plate. First edition. This work, "written as a political travelogue", provides a comprehensive history and geographical account of the region. Duane, who was briefly Secretary of the Treasury in 1833, argues in this work for the "future commercial and political importance of South America to the United States". Duane had applied in 1820 for the role of United States ambassador to the new Columbian republic, a role he was denied due to being involved in a deal to supply arms to a number of South American revolutionaries, which Monroe described as "unworthy and dishonourable". The journey documented in this work was not as a government official but rather in the employment of a Philadelphian merchant Jacob Idler, who had hired Duane to secure payment for a number of goods and arms Idler had sent to Columbia during their struggle with Spain. An uncommon book with four copies traced at auction and just one copy traced on OCLC. Sabin 20994; Nigel Little, Transoceanic Radical: William Duane: National Identity and Empire, 1760-1835, p. 175.         Journal Kept Aboard the U.S. Frigate Brandywine, Jacob Jones, Esq. Commander, May 2nd 1828 - October 8th 1829.

Quarto, unpaginated. 300 pages followed by a dozen pages of log entries by other writers during other voyages. The final page of the Brandywine journal is an “An abstract taken from the Log between Sept 1826 and Oct. 1829.” Although the writer is unidentified, this is a typical midshipman’s journal with daily entries including courses steered, winds, weather observations, shifting of sails, the daily noon latitude by observation and dead reckoning, longitude by chronometer and dead reckoning, barometric pressure, temperature of both the air and water, and ship-board events such as mustering of the crew, courts-martial, deaths and burials - one murder and half a dozen "routine" deaths! - and ships sighted. Port entries include details on provisioning, ship repairs, names on the sick list, and visits by dignitaries and officers from other ships. The journal begins early May, 1828, as the ship departs Panama. The writer's tone is understated, but he records dramatic moments aboard ship. They were no more than two weeks at sea when a murder took place - "At 10 P.M. Christopher Garrison (Sea) while sleeping on the birth deck was wounded (as is supposed) by a 32 lb shot on his head of which he died on the afternoon of the 19th. Henry Lancy (Sea) was confined on the morning of the 18th on suspision of having committed the crime & on the afternoon of the 19th Wm. Strong (Sea) was confined on suspision of being accessory to the deed." Then, on 29 August, "At Meridian Henry Lancy was executed by hanging at the fore yard for the murder of Christopher Garrison." This is an excellent and detailed account of naval life at sea and in port. The Brandywine visited Panama, Payta (Peru), Callao, Valparaiso, and, during the return trip to the United States, Rio de Janeiro. Bound in full calf. Text shows some foxing and damp-stains. In a handsome contemporary leather carrying case.

In this novel, written in the winter of 1802 but not published during her lifetime, Radcliffe, so famous for her after-the-fact rational explanations of apparently supernatural occurrences, moved past semblance to feature supernatural machinery and a "genuine ghost, who supports a claim that the king's favorite knight has murdered him (for the sake of a magic sword). The novel is also of interest in that it is set in the thirteenth century, and is thus an extremely early example of the historical novel." - Clute and Grant (eds), The Encyclopedia of Fantasy (1997), p. 799.         Cronica di Matteo Villani a Miglior Lezione Ridotta coll'auto de'testi a penna

per Il Magheri, Florence 1826 - 6 vols. 8vo. Giovanni Villani (ca 1275-1348), the Florentine writer of the famous chronicles (the Cronica) is the greatest Italian chronicler of his own times and the cornerstone of the early medieval history of Florence. His interest in economic details makes him the most modern of the late medieval chroniclers. Villani's Chronicle was considered an important work at the time, valuable enough to be continued by two other members of his family. Matteo Villani, his brother, of whom nothing is known save that he was twice married and that he died of the plague in 1363, continued it down to the year of his death. Wordier and less acute as a human observer, Matteo is well informed in his facts and is one of the most important sources of Italian history. Bound in contemporary quarter polished brown calf and marbled boards, one title label missing, else fine. Bookplate of Byrdcliffe
