The U. S. first edition (Philadelphia) of the same year comprised two volumes with the U. K. edition following about two months later. The English edition consisted of 1250 copies, set from advance sheets forwarded to London as they came off the press in Philadelphia. James Fenimore Cooper is considered to be the first true American novelist. His most popular work, The Last of the Mohicans, has remained one of the most widely read novels throughout the world and it, along with the other four novels that make up The Leatherstocking Tales, has profoundly influenced the way many view both the American Indians and the frontier period of American history. Deep in the forests of upper New York State, the brave woodsman Hawkeye (Natty Bumppo) and his loyal Mohican friends Chingachgook and Uncas become embroiled in the bloody battles of the French and Indian War.       Halle: Journal für Chemie und Physik. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good. FIRST EDITION of the experimental proof of Ohm's law, "the fundamental law of electric circuits" (Dibner 63). Ohm "made a study of the laws of galvanic currents, and while investigating the relative conductivity of metals finally discovered the relation known as 'Ohm's law,' which underlies all electrical theory and measurement. The experimental proof of this law was first published in a paper in Schweigger's Journal fur Chemie und Physik, vol. xlvi. (1826), under the title of Bestimmung des Gesetzes, nach welchem Metalle die Contactelektricität leiten" (Peck and Colby, The New International Encyclopedia). "The following year Ohm published a book, entitled Die Galvanische Kette, mathematisch bearbeitet (Berlin, 1827). It contained a theoretic deduction of Ohm's law, and became far more widely known than his article of 1826, giving the experimental deduction. In fact, his experimental paper was so little known that the impression long prevailed and still exists that he based his law on theory and never established it empirically. It portrays 80 forms of costume worn by Ottoman functionaries and was published in two issues, the present with the text in French and another with the text in Turkish. Although each plate is labelled "Tome 1er", no further volume was published in either language. It was also available either with the plates printed in colour and finished by hand (80 Francs), or (as here) with tinted plates (40 Francs). Arif Pacha fought against the Greeks at Athens and at Euboea (1826-1828), and in Syria against Mehmet Ali. In the course of his career carried out missions for the Sultan, who appointed him governor of the province of Silistria in 1861.Lacking the lithographic title-page, the text leaves somewhat browned and with some plates foxed, mostly in the margins (a couple also with marginal waterstains). The sewing has broken, leaving some leaves detached, and the spine is worn.

Scattered foxing to margins of some plates. Otherwise an excellent collection of scarce lithographs. Only one complete copy of Recueil des Scènes Familiéres and Recueil de Cinquante Scenes de Grisetes in international library holdings, at Yale and the Ransom Center respectively. Only one copy of Jeux de l'enfance in institutional holdings worldwide, i.e. Gordon Ray's at the Morgan Library, though Ray, alas, does not mention it in his The Illustrated Book In France. The album was issued with six plates by Aubry, yet a few copies have turned up in trade with the two thematically related Boilly lithographs bound-in as here. This album was issued by Delpech as a compilation of unsold prints, a common practice of contemporary printmakers and sellers, or assembled by a collector. The contemporary manners and customs of Parisian couples, illustrated with great charm and wry, understated humor by Swiss genre painter and lithographer Jean Gabriel Scheffer (1797-1876), who studied with Regnault and was a friend of Corot, Aligny, and Léopold Robert. His work was shown at the Salon de Paris beginning in 1822; his reputation as a designer of many wryly humorous lithographs, typically signed "J.S.," was firm. The son of a wood-carver, Louis Léopold Boilly lived in Douai until he was seventeen years of age, when he went to Arras to receive instruction in trompe-l'oeil painting at Domenica Doncre before moving to Paris in 1785. Between 1789 and 1791 he executed eight small scenes on moralizing and amorous subjects for the Avignon collector Esprit-Claude-François Calvet (1728-1810), including The Visit (1789; Saint-Omer, Musée Hôtel Sandelin). He exhibited at the Salon between 1791 and 1824 and received a gold medal at the Salon in 1804. These paintings thoroughly observed and reflected all aspects of urban life, its costumes and its habits, between the revolutionary period and the Restoration. In 1823, Boilly produced a series of humorous lithographies entitled Grimaces. In 1833, at a time when his popularity was declining, he was admitted to the Légion d'honneur and the Institut de France.       London. John Murray. 1826- 1827. 2 hand coloured plates. Image areas 17,5 x 26 cm and 19 x 26 cm. Trimmed to image and mounted on backing papers + 4 uncoloured plates. Image areas 11,5 x 19 cm, 14 x 26 cm, 17 x 26 cm and 17 x 26 cm and 28 x 43,5 cm. With margins 28 x 43 cm. Two plates are watermarked "Fellows 1824". The uncoloured plates have large margins. The backing paper of the hand coloured images with a few tears and creases. The lower left corner of the Kremlin plate is torn. A couple of creases on the Smolensk plate. No staining or foxing. Nice condition. One of the hand coloured views depict Smolensk in ruins after the french occupation. The other hand couloured plate show the Nikolskaija, tower in the Kremlin wall in Moscow. It looks damaged, pherhaps by the french army? A special dream like effect has been achieved by printing on blue/grey speckled paper, before hand coloring these two lithographs. Quite unusual. Two of the uncoloured ones are from St. Petersburg - the church Kazanskij on Nevskij Prospekt and the Lomonov Bridge accross the Fontanka. The remaining two I have not been able to locate. Seems to be smaller country towns. All the images have a strange emptiness or mystique to them, almost as film sets, very different in style to most other views of 19th century. They were published for the work "Views in Russia, Sweden, Poland and Germany", by Reverend John Thomas James. He travelled across Europe in the years 1813 and 1814, right at the end of the Napoleonic wars, and died in 1828 serving as bishop in Calcutta. The complete work contains 21 lithographs, most of them of Russia. Quite rare views.

Two volumes, octavo, with a folding chart, 13 plates and a folding engraving; with the colophon leaf and the leaf of errata at the end of vol. 2; in a most attractive contemporary binding of polished calf, gilt, spines ornately panelled in gilt with double black labels. First edition, first issue: the rare form of this important book with the publication date of 1826 on both title-pages. First published in April 1826, this first issue of this classic Australian voyage is "a notorious rarity" (Wantrup). Late in 1826 or early in 1827 the publisher, John Murray, had the original title-page dated 1826 excised and replaced with a cancel title-page dated 1827. Known to Ferguson in a single copy and to Davidson in less than a handful, more copies of this issue have been identified in recent years but the 1826 issue remains a desirable rarity.The book was properly published in 1827, with the title-pages reset to show that date. The book describes the important Australian coastal voyages of the Mermaid and the Bathurst. From 1815 or so, British interest in the largely uncharted northern and north-western coast of Australia had increased, partly out of concern at the territorial ambitions of other nations, especially the Dutch and the French. King was sent from England in 1817, with Admiralty instructions to complete the survey of Australia and finish the charting begun by Flinders and Freycinet. By 1824-25 he had issued a series of eight large charts showing the northern coasts, to be followed with this complete printed journal of his expedition. The naturalist Allan Cunningham sailed with the expedition, and the narrative includes extensive comments on botanical and geological phenomena, together with nautical and hydrographic observations. The engraved views were taken from King's own sketches.The work also includes significant natural history essays, including work by John Edward Gray, William Sharp Macleay and William Henry Fitton, three senior British scientists. An important section publishes the long essay by Allan Cunningham, 'A Few General Remarks on the Vegetation of certain coasts of Terra Australis...'. Cunningham had sailed with King, and so this section has the added interest of eyewitness reportage, as well as comparisons between the botany of east and west coasts. Cunningham's report is supplemented by notes from Robert Brown; and the whole section concludes with three natural history plates.Admiral Phillip Parker King, Australian-born son of the third governor Philip Gidley King, became the Navy's leading hydrographer. His coastal voyages and Oxley's expeditions inland were the great expansionary undertakings of the Macquarie era. Despatched to complete Flinders's interrupted survey and firmly to establish Great Britain's claim to the north coast, King charted the greater part of the west, north and north-east coasts and also carried out important surveys in the area of the Barrier Reef. His hydrographical work is still the basis of many of the modern charts for the areas he surveyed.This very attractive copy is in a most handsome contemporary polished calf binding, which has the bookseller's label of Henington, Fenchurch St., has the bookplate of Edward Charles Stirling (1848-1919, anthropologist on the Horn expedition into Central Australia).         Early and Significant Autograph Letter Signed to portrait painter Charles Bird King, 4to, New York, March 30, 1826. Unpublished

      Our letter holds particular biographical significance including the first public signature with Cooper's now familiar name, J. Fenimore Cooper. Here he signs, "J. Fenimore-Cooper," separating the middle and last names with a hyphen. Prior to this, a letter to his publisher, Carey & Lea, dated April 4, 1826, showed the earliest known example of his signature using "Fenimore." Our letter predates this by eight days. In addition, our letter reveals other new biographical facts according to Cooper scholar and biographer Dr. Wayne Franklin. Cooper visited Washington, D.C. in March 1826 ostensibly to seek a diplomatic appointment preceding his visit to France. Cooper left for France June 1, 1826. However, our letter reveals that while in Washington, Cooper met the artist, Charles Bird King, who wanted to paint Cooper's portrait, why Cooper missed his sitting with King, and when Cooper left Washington to return home to New York. Cooper stayed in Washington until at least March 26, 1826. His time in the city had been verified up to March 12 with uncertainty about his departure date. This letter also indicates that King wanted to paint Cooper's portrait and the reason that Cooper missed his sitting. Cooper was at the Navy Department for, "some business that called me early to the Navy Department, where, in fact, I was so much engaged, both on that and on the succeeding day, as entirely to forget that I had a face, much less that any one was willing to transfer it to the canvass[sic]….". Full Text: "Dear Sir, I left under circumstances, that, I feel, render some explanation necessary. You may remember that I appointed Friday as the next day of sitting. On that day I had some business that called me early to the Navy Department, where, in fact, I was so much engaged, both on that and on the succeeding day, as entirely to forget that I had a face, much less that any one was willing to transfer it to the canvass[sic]. However ungracious the apology may seem, I think it fairest to state the simple truth. I did not recollect that I had promised to sit, after leaving you, until I saw your habitation on Sunday morning, as I was leaving Washington in the stage. I would not have you impute this failure of memory, to any indifference to the compliment you were disposed to pay me, or to any want of a suitable degree of self love on my part, by [for "but"?] to the engagements, which pressed upon me, on the eve of my departure. I had many things of importance to myself to do and to see done, before I left the Country, and which could only be done, at that time & in my own person. I find Dunlap a good deal advanced in his picture, which certainly promises very well. He has painted the head of Franklin, of which I spoke to you, in very capital style. Indeed, I hardly know a better portrait, anywhere. It makes me regret his age, to look at it. It seems we are to have rival exhibitions this spring, and I hope the public will reap some of the ordinary fruits of competition; though, I confess, that, in my own poor judgment there seems some little difference between the management of a line of stages, and a School for the Fine Arts-Very Resp[ectfully] Your Obl[iged] Ser[van]t, J. Fenimore Cooper." In the lower left corner he writes his correspondent's name, "Mr. King." Condition: Normal soiling and folds in tact, paper is evenly sunned.

A provincially-printed volume by botany teacher and Quaker Sarah Hoare.Hoare's poem first appeared as an addendum to Priscilla Wakefield's Introduction to Botany (1818), but is here accompanied by sundry other poems and an introduction. In this, which is addressed to her pupils, Hoare emphasises her indebtedness to Wakefield's work-'it was the first book of the kind I had read on the subject'-and explains that a change in her financial circumstances has necessitated her publication of the present work. Hoare taught the daughters of Quakers in Ireland for many years before returning to Bristol where she continued the work. For her, 'botany was connected with the ideas of personal and social usefulness' and the work takes on a maternal tone, with the medicinal properties of plants emphasised that they might be of use to those students of hers who have had children of their own. He held pronounced views on political economy and utilitarianism and was known as the founder of Philosophic Radicalism. He educated his more famous son John Stuart Mill. James Mill was appointed to the India Office in 1819. He was "the first British historian to give a comprehensive treatment to Indian history as a whole".         Early and Significant Autograph Letter Signed to portrait painter Charles Bird King, 4to, New York, March 30, 1826. Unpublished

      Our letter holds particular biographical significance including the first public signature with Cooper's now familiar name, J. Fenimore Cooper. Here he signs, "J. Fenimore-Cooper," separating the middle and last names with a hyphen. Prior to this, a letter to his publisher, Carey & Lea, dated April 4, 1826, showed the earliest known example of his signature using "Fenimore." Our letter predates this by eight days. In addition, our letter reveals other new biographical facts according to Cooper scholar and biographer Dr. Wayne Franklin. Cooper visited Washington, D.C. in March 1826 ostensibly to seek a diplomatic appointment preceding his visit to France. Cooper left for France June 1, 1826. However, our letter reveals that while in Washington, Cooper met the artist, Charles Bird King, who wanted to paint Cooper's portrait, why Cooper missed his sitting with King, and when Cooper left Washington to return home to New York. Cooper stayed in Washington until at least March 26, 1826. His time in the city had been verified up to March 12 with uncertainty about his departure date. This letter also indicates that King wanted to paint Cooper's portrait and the reason that Cooper missed his sitting. Cooper was at the Navy Department for, "some business that called me early to the Navy Department, where, in fact, I was so much engaged, both on that and on the succeeding day, as entirely to forget that I had a face, much less that any one was willing to transfer it to the canvass[sic]....". Full Text: "Dear Sir, I left under circumstances, that, I feel, render some explanation necessary. You may remember that I appointed Friday as the next day of sitting. On that day I had some business that called me early to the Navy Department, where, in fact, I was so much engaged, both on that and on the succeeding day, as entirely to forget that I had a face, much less that any one was willing to transfer it to the canvass[sic]. However ungracious the apology may seem, I think it fairest to state the simple truth. I did not recollect that I had promised to sit, after leaving you, until I saw your habitation on Sunday morning, as I was leaving Washington in the stage. I would not have you impute this failure of memory, to any indifference to the compliment you were disposed to pay me, or to any want of a suitable degree of self love on my part, by [for "but"?] to the engagements, which pressed upon me, on the eve of my departure. I had many things of importance to myself to do and to see done, before I left the Country, and which could only be done, at that time & in my own person. I find Dunlap a good deal advanced in his picture, which certainly promises very well. He has painted the head of Franklin, of which I spoke to you, in very capital style. Indeed, I hardly know a better portrait, anywhere. It makes me regret his age, to look at it. It seems we are to have rival exhibitions this spring, and I hope the public will reap some of the ordinary fruits of competition; though, I confess, that, in my own poor judgment there seems some little difference between the management of a line of stages, and a School for the Fine Arts-Very Resp[ectfully] Your Obl[iged] Ser[van]t, J. Fenimore Cooper." In the lower left corner he writes his correspondent's name, "Mr. King." Condition: Normal soiling and folds in tact, paper is evenly sunned.

Stamp of the American Philosophical Society to the title page, their bookplate to front pastedown. Wear to extremities, rubbing to boards, short closed tear to front free binder's blank; a very good copy. Aquatint frontispiece and plate. First edition. This work, "written as a political travelogue", provides a comprehensive history and geographical account of the region. Duane, who was briefly Secretary of the Treasury in 1833, argues in this work for the "future commercial and political importance of South America to the United States". Duane had applied in 1820 for the role of United States ambassador to the new Columbian republic, a role he was denied due to being involved in a deal to supply arms to a number of South American revolutionaries, which Monroe described as "unworthy and dishonourable". The journey documented in this work was not as a government official but rather in the employment of a Philadelphian merchant Jacob Idler, who had hired Duane to secure payment for a number of goods and arms Idler had sent to Columbia during their struggle with Spain. Er begann seine Ausbildung 1803 bei Daniel Berger in Berlin und ging dann nach Wien, wo er Drucke nach den alten Meistern herstellte und in Kontakt mit Franz Pforr kam. 1808 zog er nach Rom, wo er bis 1832 blieb. Hier schloss F. Ruscheweyh sich P. v. Cornelius und F.Overbeck an, dessen Werke er durch seine graphischen Reproduktionen zu weiterer Verbreitung verhalf. - Minimal stockfleckig im Rand teils etwas stärker. Christy's Digest was intended to "facilitate the researches of professional gentlemen, and to present to the public in the most simple and condensed form, the points of law which have been decided by the highest tribunals of the state of Louisiana and the late territory of Orleans" (v).
