An Account of the State of Agriculture & Grazing in New South WalesÖ

London,: J. Cross, 1826.. Tall octavo, with a coloured folding frontispiece and four aquatint plates (three in colour), & the rare large folding map by J. Cross, half-title, engraved bookseller's ticket (G.F. Cruchley) tipped in, some offsetting; an excellent untrimmed copy in the original printed boards a little darkened at spine; in an attractive tan calf book-form box by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. A famous rarity and a remarkably attractive copy: this is the special issue of a title that is extremely uncommon in any form, complete with the extra large folding map and the panoramic coloured view of Sydney. The highly decorative map is dedicated to Captain Phillip Parker King, who had just completed his cartographic work on the vessels Mermaid and Bathurst. The first book on Australian agriculture, it was written by a noted early settler, father of the novelist Louisa Atkinson, and first husband of Charlotte Barton, author of the first Australian children's book. Atkinson's account of the agricultural and pastoral frontier, based on several years' personal experience, is at once a practical guide and a descriptive survey of the agricultural districts and large establishments.A remarkably attractive book, it is well illustrated with aquatints of very fine quality. The splendid folding frontispiece, one of the best early printed views of Sydney, is probably based on the painting by Richard Read now in the National Library of Australia. Another of the plates is important as the earliest published ground-plan of an Australian house, offered by Atkinson as appropriate to the requirements of a pioneering agriculturist. Broadbent (The Australian Colonial House) suggests that Atkinson's design was modelled on Oldbury, the house that he had built in the early 1820s. Rebuilt in 1828, it is now the oldest surviving house in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. The other three hand-coloured aquatints show scenes from an "exploring party" of two settlers and three Aborigines, one of the latter in European clothes.Few people of this period were actively promoting farming in Australia. In 1826 Atkinson accompanied Charles Macarthur to Saxony to buy sheep - and he anticipated 'some future and not distant period, when these vast and in many places fertile plains, shall be covered by productive flocks and herds, and enlivened by the presence and industry of civilised men...' (An Account, p. 7).Through his own farming endeavours as well as his writing - in particular this seminal work - Atkinson was 'trying to raise the efficiency of farming in New South Wales; ploughing competitions, stock breeding, cheese making and dingo eradication all claimed his attention... The Agricultural and Horticultural Society regarded it as a judicious and ably written treatise, and awarded him a gold medal' (ADB).This copy was sold by the Mapseller and Publisher G.F. Cruchley, and has his elaborate advertising ticket on the front paste-down. Cruchley was a successor to the cartographer John Cary and, the ticket notes, was associated with Arrowsmith.Ferguson, 1054.

The Book Of Nature (3 volume set)

London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown and Green. VG+/NONE. 1826. 1st Edition. Hardcover; 1st Printing. 1st edition/1st printing. Lovely 3 volume 1st printing/1st edition set of an important work of its time by a physician and surgeon who had previously published 'A History Of Medicine' in 1795, which helped to effect a much needed reform in the profession of the apothecary, and who also wrote profusely about geology, zoology, matter, the human mind and body, botany, and religion. This 3-volume set of books is half-bound in dark green leather with gilt printing and decoration on the spines, with 4 raised bands on each spine, and a gilt strip separating the leather at the spine and corners from the marbled paper-covered boards portion of the bindings. The pastedowns, end pages and page edges are the same marbled design as the binding boards. Vol. I has 443 pages, Vol. II has 441 pages, and Vol. III has 425 pages. The volumes are straight, clean, very tight, and have no previous owners' writing in them. There is an occasional very small, very faint foxing spot to pages (at beginnings and ends of text blocks), there is some edgewear to the binding boards, and there is an occasional small shelving scuff to the leather and to the marbled paper-covered boards, with some small areas of color loss. The leather and boards are in excellent condition, however, and the hinges are very sound and the text paper supple. Quite a beautiful set, and scarce in this condition. ; Vol. 3; 8-3/4" x 5-1/2" .

Voyage autour du monde... [A series of Zoologie plates]

Paris,: Arthus Bertrand, circa, 1826.. Five original parts, folio, containing a total of 32 plates, all of which with fine original handcolouring, a few spots; completely unbound as issued, and in fine condition in the original printed wrappers, fraying to spines and edges. A substantial series of zoologicial natural history plates from the finely-illustrated Duperrey voyage, published in Paris between 1826 and 1830; publication was never in fact completed. Preserved in their fragile original "livraison" loose printed wrappers for the Atlas Zoologie, the plates variously depict fish, crustaceans, birds and mammals, including the 'Kangourou Oualabat' from New South Wales: the original specimens were collected from South America, the Pacific and New Guinea. This was one of the greatest French scientific expeditions. Apart from new discoveries, the voyage of thirty-one months corrected errors in existing maritime charts, gathered three hundred geological samples, twelve hundred insects, two hundred and sixty-four birds and quadrupeds as well as botanical specimens, reptiles and fishes. It reported on Pacific languages, costumes, weapons and artefacts. The superb illustrations resulting from these new discoveries are among the finest of nineteenth century voyage art. This assembly represents a chance to acquire a significant portion of the zoology discoveries from this major French expedition. The plates are as follows:1.Trigle Koumou, 2. Cestration de Philipp, 3. Squale Maou, 4. Kangourou Oualabat, 5. AthÈrine des Malouines, 6. DelphinaptËre de PÈron, Dauphin ? sourcils blancs, Dauphin ? bandes, Dauphin funenas, Dauphin malaise, 7. Indenture concerning a large debt owed to Hobart Town merchant

Hobart,: 29 March, 1826.. Manuscript, nine leaves measuring 406 x 330 mm., wove paper, original ribbon ties , wax seals extant; folded to docket size, leaf forming exterior of the docket a little browned and chipped, otherwise very good. Robert Edwards Collection. An early Van Diemen's Land manuscript indenture resulting from a considerable debt accrued to a Hobart Town merchant. The indenture concerns two men, namely William Allardyce of the Clyde District and William Wilson, a merchant residing trading from Hobart Town. The manuscript plainly states that Allardyce has accrued debts of £500 for merchandise received on credit from Wilson; being unable to pay his debt the indenture stipulates the mortgage of Allardyce's property to raise the required capital. The trustee for the funds is David Lord, the son of an emancipated convict who became a major landholder and founding subscriber of the Van Diemen's Land Bank. The document was witnessed by Josiah Spode, later coroner and Chief Convict Superintendent, and each leaf bears his signature. The final leaf retains the extant wax seals of Wilson, Allardyce and Lord.

        Voyage autour du monde

Paris,: chez Pillet aânÈ,, 1826.. Quarto text volume; bound in recent blue quarter morocco [with] folio atlas, the latter with 120 engraved botanical plates; some sporadic foxing and browning as almost always with this book, but a good copy in contemporary brown morocco, ornately decorated in blind and gilt, all edges gilt. The very scarce botanical section of the full official account of the Freycinet expedition: the Atlas volume with its 120 engravings, and complete with its text volume in an unmatched later binding.Capitalising on the incredible number of Australian specimens collected during the earlier Baudin voyage, now known chiefly because of the gardens at Malmaison, the present volume confirms that Australian botany still featured as one of the great goals of the Freycinet voyage, with twenty Australian specimens here noticed for the first time.'Gaudichaud was the first botanist of the French expeditions to botanise in the Blue Mountains and Bathurst, which he did on a brief journey, with the assistance of Cunningham and Fraser... Gaudichaud's fine work (as principal contributor) and a splendid folio atlas of 120 plates... are valuable to the botanist for the specific localities of plants collected. Port Jackson, Botany Bay, the Blue Mountains and Shark's Bay in Western Australia were visited...' (Maiden, "Records of the Earlier French Botanists", Journal and Proceedings of the Royal Society of NSW, vol. XLIV, pp. 137-8). The expedition made a special study of the botany of all the countries they visited. The atlas includes thirty-two plates of Hawaiian plants (including the Sandalwood - plate 45), and there are twenty plates of newly described plants from New Holland ('a charming country', thought Gaudichaud, and the only place visited on the voyage that reminded him of 'notre belle France').Ferguson records only two sets of the full official account of the voyage, of which this forms part - the Mitchell and National Library copies, the latter incomplete.Nissen, 989.

Une lettre manuscrite de Deleuze sur le magnétisme animal adressée au Journal des Débats MANUSCRIT

Trois pages manuscrites 70 lignes manuscrites circa.

London: John Murray, 1826. First Edition. Hardcover. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall Very Good. Two volumes in one. lxvii, 335; 269 pp, complete with 38 engraved plates (1 colored) and maps (1 folding), 6 wood-engraved vignettes in the text. Rebound in red buckram with leather spine label, date erroneously printed as 1836 at foot. Occasional minor foxing and offsetting, one closed tear to map.In hopes of tracing the course of the Niger River, Denham's expedition crossed the desert along the long-established Sahara trade route to the kingdom of Bornu (later Nigeria), a route littered with the skeletons of thousands of slaves abandoned there over the centuries. They sighted Lake Chad and reached the capital of Bornu, where they were welcomed by a spectacular array of some five thousand horsemen sent by the Muslim prophet who ruled Bornu in the king's name. Though delighted to meet them, he refused to let them continue their explorations, lest they meet some misadventure for which he would be blamed. Ultimately, the expedition returned to England having failed to find the Niger, but having opened much of north central Africa to European knowledge. Written in a lively style, and embellished with engravings of Denham's own sketches, this account became one of the classics of its genre (DNB). Denham was later appointed lieutenant-governor of the colony of Sierra Leone, where he died of the African fever in 1828.

Ray was a professor of mathematics and wrote several books on the subject, beginning in 1834 with An Introduction to Ray's Eclectic Arithmetic, the first of a series of six textbooks which became the most popular and widely used American mathematics textbooks of the Nineteenth Century. They also formed the basis for Ray's Mathematical Series of textbooks. As late as 1913, annual sales exceeded a quarter of a million copies a year, and total sales of the arithmetic books alone are estimated at 120 million copies. The success of Ray's Arithmetic series prompted his publisher to seek an author for a set of readers. They chose William Holmes McGuffey, who joined Ray on the faculty of Woodward College, and where he wrote the McGuffey Readers which surpassed even Ray's Arithmetics to become the most popular textbooks ever written. .

Bailliere Paris: Bailliere, 1826. 1st edition. Calmeil, Louis Florentin (1798-1895). De la paralysie consideree chez les alienes, recherches faites dans le service de feu M. Royer-Collard et de M. Esquirol. 8vo. [4] ii, 446pp. Paris and London: J.-B. Bailliere, 1826. 198 x 122 mm. Modern quarter morocco, marbled boards in period style. Light browning, but very good. One signature misbound. First Edition. Garrison-Morton 4797. Calmeil was a pupil of the French psychiatrist Esquirol. His treatise contains the classic description of general paralysis of the insane, along with an attempt to correlate the pathology of the disease with its clinical manifestations. However, Calmeil did not recognize that general paralysis was a separate disease entity (syphilis) and not simply a complication of mental illness. Norman 389. Zilboorg & Henry, p. 529. 305
