Albumen photographs of Sydney and Melbourne: Brighton Beach [with] Entrance to Botanical Gardens; Esplanade, St. Kilda, Victoria; St. Kilda; and Sydney NSW

Early 1870s.. Charles Nettleton (1826-1902), was a well known Australian photographer said to have taken the only genuine photograph of Ned Kelly; he was appointed the special photographer to the government, recording the growth of Melbourne and the first visit of the English cricket team. This is a single album page, with a large view of Brighton Beach, ca. 1880 (State Library of Victoria, Accession No: H36540) by Charles Nettleton. The large beach scene shows men and ladies in their Sunday best, reclining on the grass and looking down towards the beach; the tide is out and children are hunting in the shallow water for treasures, as a family walks on the beach. 7 1/2 x 5 1/4".& & Four albumen photographs (carte de visite size) are on the verso of the Nettleton Brighton Beach photograph, and they are neatly labeled in a contemporary hand, from top to bottom: "Entrance to Botanical Gardens, Sydney"; "Esplanade - St. Kilda - Victoria"; "St. Kilda" (possibly Glenferrie Road); and "Sydney, NSW" (with a view of the harbor). & & The photograph labeled "Esplanade - St. Kilda - Victoria" is actually taken on the pier, looking towards where the Esplanade Hotel was to be constructed in 1878. A photograph taken from the same location on the pier around 1880 by D. McDonald (Libraries Australia ID 49377438) shows considerably more construction, and the spot where the Esplanade Hotel is to be built is vacant. & & The photograph labeled "St. Kilda", the unidentified street scene of St. Kilda, was not found on a search of Trove. It is taken from a rise, looking downward and away from town.& & The photograph labelled "Sydney, NSW" is identified by the State Library of New South Wales as "Carte de visite, panoramic view Church Hill, Sydney [view looking toward Sydney Cove with St. Patrick's Church in foreground] early 1870s (State Library New South Wales SPF/85).& & Album page 11 x 8 1/4" 1/2"; each photograph carte de visite size, 3 1/2 x 2 1/4". Album page slt. rippled; photographs in very good condition.

An Inquiry into the Origin of the Laws and Political Institutions of

1826. Spence, George [1787-1850]. An Inquiry into the Origin of the Laws and Political Institutions of Modern Europe, Particularly Those of England. London: John Murray, 1826. xxxvi, 600 pp. Octavo (9" x 5-1/2"). Recent period-style quarter calf over cloth, gilt fillets and lettering piece to spine, endpapers renewed, untrimmed edges. Clean tear to fore-edge of a leaf mended with archival tape. Light foxing to a few leaves, interior otherwise fresh. Ex-institutional library. Small inkstamp to title page, another to a text leaf. A handsome copy of an uncommon title. * Only edition. This book is mentioned by Holdsworth, who deems it a "learned book." According to Spence's preface, his work on the translation of the Code Napoleon led him to "look attentively into the civil law of the Romans, where he found that a great proportion of the doctrines of the common law of England, even many of those which are purely artificial, were to be found in the [Corpus Juris Civilis]. This induced him to study the civil and criminal code of the Romans with some minuteness, and to compare the political and judicial institutions of modern Europe, and of our own country in particular, with those of ancient Rome, in order to discover to what extent the former might be traced from the latter, their venerable and classical origins." (v). Spence was an English jurist and barrister of the Inner Temple. He was the author of several books, including a translation of the Code Napoleon and an important treatise on chancery law. Not in Sweet & Maxwell. Holdsworth, A History of English Law XIII:496. Catalogue of the Library of the Harvard Law School (1909) II:637.

Scene upon the Eastern Road from Rangoon looking towards the South [Pl. 13]

London: Kingsbury & Co. and Thomas Clay, [1826]. Hand-coloured aquatint plates engraved by G. Hunt after Moore. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling. 11 1/4 x 14 3/4 inches. A beautiful plate from Moore's book 'Eighteen Views taken at & Near Rangoon', an important visual record of the Burmese countryside and scenery, and of the war between the Burmese and British in 1824 to 1826. Following Burmese incursions into British held territory in 1821-1823 (including the successful invasion of Assam), the Governor-General , Lord Amherst, declared war on Burma on February 24, 1824. The British were successful in expelling the Burmese from Assam, but Bandula, the ablest of the Burmese generals, repelled a British detachment at Ramu on the Chittagong frontier. In reply, the British sent an expedition of 11,000 men under Major-General Archibald Campbell and ships under Captain Frederick Marryat to attack Rangoon by sea. The expedition resulted in the capture of Rangoon on May 11, 1824, with the Burmese forces fleeing into jungles of Pegu. Meanwhile, Bandula had been recalled and arrived before Rangoon on December 1 with 60,000 men. He was, however, defeated on December 15 and then retreated to Donabew, where, after a brave defence, he was killed in April 1825. On April 25, Campbell captured Prome, the capital of Lower Burma. The fighting continued sporadically throughout the rest of 1825 and into 1826, until a peace treaty was signed on February 24. Joseph Moore, a Lieutenant in the 89th Regiment, includes images that begin with the departure of Campbell's invasion force and conclude in July 1824. They are a finely balanced mixture of eye-witness battle scenes with a number of very fine views of countryside and buildings in and around Rangoon. Frederick Marryat's involvement in the conflict began in March 1823 when he "commissioned the Larne for service in the East Indies, where he arrived in time to take an active part in the first Burmese war. From May to September 1824 he was senior naval officer at Rangoon, and was officially thanked for his able, gallant, and zealous co-operation with the troops. The very sickly state of the ship obliged him to go to Penang, but by the end of December he was back at Rangoon, and in February 1825 he had the naval command of an expedition up the Bassein river, which occupied Bassein and seized the Burmese magazines. [It was during this period that he made the sketches worked up into the plates in the second part of the present work]." (DNB) Abbey Travel II, 404; Tooley 334.

Monument ÈlevÈ ? la mÈmoire de la PÈrouse

Paris,, 1826.. Lithograph, 190 x 280 mm.; very good, mounted. A fine view of the La PÈrouse monument, built in Sydney to honour the great French explorer during the visit of the ThÈtis under Hyacinthe de Bougainville in 1825. The building of the monument showed a suitable piety from the French explorers nearly forty years after La PÈrouse's disappearance, and especially from Hyacinthe de Bougainville himself, heir to a great French naval tradition as the grandson of Louis de Bougainville, the first French circumnavigator.Edmond de la Touanne, who prepared this fine lithograph view of the monument, was a friend and protÈgÈ of Bougainville and sailed on the expedition as lieutenant de vaisseau. Because of the haste with which the expedition was manned, no official artist was sent; as Bougainville remarks, no pictorial record of the expedition would have survived but for de la Touanne's sketches, which were published as lithographs in the official record of the expedition and in de la Touanne's own album.La PÈrouse had sailed towards Australia at the beginning of 1788; his expedition had been at sea exploring the central Pacific, but his main instructions were to make for Australian waters to check on English activity in the region. Australia was a prize, and the French were as keen as the English to claim it. On 24 January they reached Botany Bay to find the ships of the First Fleet at anchor in the harbour. The French ships spent over six weeks in Botany Bay, and thus witnessed the English move to Port Jackson and the beginnings of the fledgling settlement there. In fact the last white people to see the French expedition before it vanished in the Pacific were the first Australian settlers. France lost its most important explorer of the eighteenth century, and the nation mourned this loss for over forty years.

SCENERY OF THE RHINE, BELGIUM AND HOLLAND

London: Robert Jennings, 1826. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. 305 x 241 mm (12 x 9 1/2"). 5 p.l. (including engraved title), [60] leaves. FIRST EDITION. HANDSOME CONTEMPORARY DARK GREEN HALF MOROCCO over moss green straight-grain buckram, wide raised bands decorated with plain and decorative gilt rules, SPINE LAVISHLY GILT in compartments with leafy volute cornerpieces and a large and intricate central ornament composed of lilies, leaves, and small tools radiating from a central circlet, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt (joints and morocco corners artfully renewed). WITH 62 EXCELLENT ENGRAVED SCENIC PLATES PRINTED ON CHINA PAPER and mounted, the engravings after drawings by Batty and featuring city views, river vistas, and ruins. Descriptive text leaves printed in English (on the recto facing the engravings) and in French (on the verso). Hunnisett, p. 133; Houfe, p. 228. Spine just slightly sunned, title page and four other plates somewhat foxed (mainly in the margins), occasional minor foxing elsewhere, a hint of offsetting from plates, otherwise quite a fine copy, the handsome binding solid and with bright gilt, and the text and plates generally very clean and fresh. With his usual charm, skill, and precision, Batty here illustrates scenes from the Rhineland and the Netherlands. Ruined castles alternate with minutely rendered lacy gothic cathedrals; placid lakeside scenes contrast with views of neat and prosperous town squares; and there is an appealing mix of rural and urban, of sun and storm. In the foreground, ladies and gentlemen, peasants, soldiers, and boatmen give life to the pictures. And as in his other illustrated books, the carefully drawn scenes give an almost photographic impression of veracity, while still catering to the then prevailing British Romantic taste for picturesque views. The plates include views from Heidelberg, Wurzburg, Frankfort, Andernach, Cologne, Tournay, Bruges, Brussels, Antwerp, Utrect, Rotterdam, The Hague, Amsterdam, and others. Robert Batty (d. 1848) went to Italy at 15 to study art, returned to England to enroll at Cambridge, and served as an officer at Waterloo. He then undertook the publication of books which he himself illustrated, including records of his campaigns. His most famous works are the ones--like the present item--which illustrate the scenery of various countries or regions. Hunnisett says that he was the most celebrated of the amateur topographical artists whose work found its way into print at the time, while Redgrave says that "his industry was great" and "his works carefully and truthfully drawn." Ours is the eighth of 11 scenic works he published during the years 1815-32; the books, covering Wales and most of northern continental Europe, were issued by the best publishers and done in conjunction with the best engravers of the time. These books are generally available in the marketplace, but the present copy is both pretty and well preserved.

1st Edition. Hardcover. Good. FIRST EDITION of the experimental proof of Ohm's law, "the fundamental law of electric circuits" (Dibner 63). Ohm "made a study of the laws of galvanic currents, and while investigating the relative conductivity of metals finally discovered the relation known as 'Ohm's law,' which underlies all electrical theory and measurement. The experimental proof of this law was first published in a paper in Schweigger's Journal fur Chemie und Physik, vol. xlvi. (1826), under the title of Bestimmung des Gesetzes, nach welchem Metalle die Contactelektricität leiten" (Peck and Colby, The New International Encyclopedia). "The following year Ohm published a book, entitled Die Galvanische Kette, mathematisch bearbeitet (Berlin, 1827). It contained a theoretic deduction of Ohm's law, and became far more widely known than his article of 1826, giving the experimental deduction. In fact, his experimental paper was so little known that the impression long prevailed and still exists that he based his law on theory and never established it empirically. This misapprehension accounts, perhaps, for the unfavourable reception of Ohm's conclusions" (Cajori, A History of Physics). In: Journal für Chemie und Physik. Hrsg. v. J. S. C. Schweigger u. W. Schweigger-Seidel, vol. 46, pp. 137-166. Halle: 1826. The whole volume offered. Octavo, modern cloth. Some dampstaining throughout; occasional browning. Provenance: with library and de-accession stamps on series title from the prestigious Gmelin Institute (after 1996, part of the Max Planck Institute).

Narrative of Travels and Discoveries in Northern and central Africa in the Years 1822, 1823, and 1824. Extending across the Great Desert to the Tenth Degree of Northern Latitude, and from Kouka in Bornou, to Sackatoo, the Capital of the Fellatah Empi

London: John Murray, 1826. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall Two volumes in one. lxvii, 335; 269 pp, complete with 38 engraved plates (1 colored) and maps (1 folding), 6 wood-engraved vignettes in the text. Rebound in red buckram with leather spine label, date erroneously printed as 1836 at foot. Occasional minor foxing and offsetting, one closed tear to map.In hopes of tracing the course of the Niger River, Denham's expedition crossed the desert along the long-established Sahara trade route to the kingdom of Bornu (later Nigeria), a route littered with the skeletons of thousands of slaves abandoned there over the centuries. They sighted Lake Chad and reached the capital of Bornu, where they were welcomed by a spectacular array of some five thousand horsemen sent by the Muslim prophet who ruled Bornu in the king's name. Though delighted to meet them, he refused to let them continue their explorations, lest they meet some misadventure for which he would be blamed. Ultimately, the expedition returned to England having failed to find the Niger, but having opened much of north central Africa to European knowledge. Written in a lively style, and embellished with engravings of Denham's own sketches, this account became one of the classics of its genre (DNB). Denham was later appointed lieutenant-governor of the colony of Sierra Leone, where he died of the African fever in 1828.

Oeuvres complètes de La Fontaine ornées de trente vignettes dessinées par Devéria et gravées par Thompson

Paris: Baudouin Frères [Balzac], 1826. Livre. Illus. by Eugène Devéria. Très bon. Cuir. Ed. originale. Grand In-8. Paris, Baudouin frères, 1826. 23,5 x 16 cm (R), grand in-8, VIII pp. + 2 ff. n. ch. (VICAIRE, IV, 931 ; Carteret, III, 354).

The album was issued with six plates by Aubry, yet a few copies have turned up in trade with the two thematically related Boilly lithographs bound-in as here. This album was issued by Delpech as a compilation of unsold prints, a common practice of contemporary printmakers and sellers, or assembled by a collector. The contemporary manners and customs of Parisian couples, illustrated with great charm and wry, understated humor by Swiss genre painter and lithographer Jean Gabriel Scheffer (1797-1876), who studied with Regnault and was a friend of Corot, Aligny, and Léopold Robert. His work was shown at the Salon de Paris beginning in 1822; his reputation as a designer of many wryly humorous lithographs, typically signed "J.S.," was firm. The son of a wood-carver, Louis Léopold Boilly lived in Douai until he was seventeen years of age, when he went to Arras to receive instruction in trompe-l'oeil painting at Domenica Doncre before moving to Paris in 1785. Between 1789 and 1791 he executed eight small scenes on moralizing and amorous subjects for the Avignon collector Esprit-Claude-François Calvet (1728–1810), including The Visit (1789; Saint-Omer, Musée Hôtel Sandelin). He exhibited at the Salon between 1791 and 1824 and received a gold medal at the Salon in 1804. These paintings thoroughly observed and reflected all aspects of urban life, its costumes and its habits, between the revolutionary period and the Restoration.
