Sion Longley WENBAN (1848 Cincinnati (Ohio) - München 1897). Uferlandschaft

-- [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Olivier

Paris: Urbain Canel (1826). 226pp - Paris: Urbain Canel (1826). 226pp. The controversial anonymous novel, originally attributed to the Duchesse Claire de Duras, created a scandal when published. The story revolves around a romantic intrigue that was in fact based upon the homosexual Marquis de Custine's broken engagement to Duras' daughter in 1820. Although never explicit, the novel was clearly designed to provoke and it actually prevented Duras from publishing her own similarly titled novel during her lifetime (it only appeaed in 1971). At one point in the novel, the narrator remarks, "Confidence was full and reciprocal between the two friends. except on one point, the subject of their loves.Olivier, in this matter, was reserved and excessively mysterious."       London: John Murray, 1826. a few spots, one leaf stained and another with a marginal defect.. Quarto, with 14 charts and aquatint plates, some folding; overall a good copy in modern calf with label from an earlier binding.         Eigenh. Brief mit U. („Ludw. Achim Arnim").

Berlin, 3. März 1826. - 3¼ SS. auf Doppelblatt. 4to. Mit eh. Adresse (Faltbrief).

Some edgewear and a few minor stains. Toning, light foxing to a few leaves, internally clean. * Only editions. Peele et Al. v. the Merchants' Insurance Company concerned claims on a merchant ship that was wrecked off the coast of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and abandoned. Though damaged, the cargo was ultimately saved. At issue was the effect of abandonment on the insurance claim of the owners. In the U.S. Circuit Court, Justice Story held that the owners had the right to abandon their ship under the circumstances of the wreck and were entitled to recover their claim. The case was appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, but no decision can be found. The second item was probably intended for busy New England lawyers who dealt with maritime contracts. It would have been a handy reference and a useful source for erudite references. The core of this curious volume is an anthology of writings by the leading seventeenth-century English writers on admiralty. An editor isn't listed and the extracts are presented without commentary, but the editor used sources for each work which are mentioned and the extracts are collated against them in side-notes. (Impressions No. 74./1826.)

(S.n.), (Paris?) 1826 - First edition. Published unbound. Attached with string. 46, (2) p. Comte de Kergorlay's (1769-1856) speech concerning the "Haiti Indemnity" at the Chamber of Peers on April 19, 1826. After the successful slave rebellion of Saint-Domingue which culminated in the elimination of slavery and the founding of the Republic of Haiti it took more than twenty years until the French ruler, King Charles X of France recognised the independence of the island in return of 150 million gold franc indemnity in April 1825. The sum was later reduced to 90 million in 1838. The issue of the indemnity appeared again in 2003 when the President of Haiti demanded France to pay back over 21 billion U.S. dollars, the equivalent in today's money of the 90 million gold francs, however in 2004 the prime minister rescinded the reparations demand. A fine copy. An excellent set of numbers I to IX [Thursday 5th January 1826 - Thursday 27th April 1826], with a contemporary ink inscription on verso of title-page, 'To Thomas Campbell Esq., Lord Rector of the University of Glasgow with the sincere congratulations of an admiring constituent. James Blair.' > Apparently all published. Very scarce. COPAC & OCLC locate sets only at 6 libraries (NLS + BL + Bodleian and UCLA + Princeton + Un. of S. Carolina). A fine copy. An excellent set of numbers I - VII (Wednesday 13 December 1826 - Wednesday 7 March 1827). Apparently all published and very rare. BUCOP locates only one set (at the BL). OCLC & COPAC add no others. Not in the Union List. Two relatively early Glasgow university journals with a pot-pourri of articles both serious and amusing, together with a smattering of poetry, intended, according to the editors, to be 'a permanent record of our collegiate pursuits, - a depository of those pains and pleasures whose influence will extend through the remainder of our lives'. The authors of the Academic> declared that theirs was 'a joint production of a few young men, associated in the pursuit of literature, at a northern university'. Those of the Collegian> announced that that journal had 'been conducted on a similar plan with that of the Academic> . and is partly intended as a continuation of that volume'. The circulation of the work was 'confined to a few individuals', resulting no doubt in its present rarity. Among the more serious articles are contributions on 'the philosophy of the science of mathematics', 'the inadequacy of utility as a standard of morals', atheism, remarks on the metaphysical and moral sciences, society and government, an anti-slavery meeting, the difference between wit and humour, degree and examination regulations, a long obituary of George Jardine, a defence of pugilism, etc. etc. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Stamperia Francese 1826 In 16, pp. 118 + (2). ITA

Récréations du Coeur et de l'Esprit,

1826. first edition. The Manners of French Society Executed with Gentle SatireMONNIER, Henry. Paris & London: Giraldon-Bovinet, 1826.First edition. Small oblong quarto (9 x 11 7/8 inches; 229 x 300 mm.). Six hand-colored lithographed plates by F.Noël and C.Motte after Monnier, with seventeen captioned images. An original album of six (of a possible forty-two?) hand colored lithographed plates from this exceptionally rare series. Loose as issued in the original lithographed buff wrappers, front cover decoratively lettered in black. Lower cover with slight crease, otherwise very fine. Excessively rare. Housed in a fleece-lined, half black morocco clamshell case.?"Between 1825 and 1827 Monnier passed much of his time in London, where he collaborated with Lami in what was to become the Voyage en Angleterre. On his return to Paris he embarked on a series of albums in which he recorded the manners and humors of the city with unprecedented profusion. Between 1826 and 1830 he satisfied the insatiable demand for his designs with almost 500 lithographs, nearly all of which were drawn with a pen and colored by hand. For each design he himself colored a master print and carefully supervised its subsequent preparation… Some of the salient titles in his human comedy may be mentioned. There are potpourris like Recréations du coeur et de l?'esprit, Paris vivant, and Rencontres Parisiennes. Macédoine pittoresque. There are more closely focussed surveys like Les grisettes, Moeurs administratives, Galerie théâtrale, Boutiques de Paris, and Six Quartiers de Paris. There are suites like Jadis et aujourd?'hui and Les contrastes, which take their departure from comparisons in time or of manners…Monnier was a satirist with a difference. His attitude towards his subjects hardly varies. His aim was to set down what he saw with elegance and precision, but with no overt interpretation or judgment?" (Ray, The Art of the French Illustrated Book, p. 199).We have only ever seen one other example (of the 1827 edition) - thirteen years ago (with thirty-two of forty-two plates) We have located just one copy in institutions worldwide (of the 1827 edition with 40 plates) in the The Morgan Library and Museum. ITA
