George Sinclair
James Ridgeway. Very Good: Gorgeous Illustrations Intact: wonderful exploration of British natural history. George Sinclair was a botanist; in this work, he is exploring the nutritional value of various grasses as animal fodder through comparison of their water-soluble components. Originally published in folio form with cuttings of the grasses mentioned, this is the second edition and is profusely illustrated with prints of the various grasses in color. The study was instituted by the Duke of Bedford while recuperating from ill-health and done with the assistance of various others including Sir Humphrey Davies. The illustrations are just stunning both in detail and the accuracy of approach. Filled with tables and comparisons, this is a great historical document detailing grasses or "weeds" that were cultivated in Great Britain to aid in the feeding of farm animals. Prints signed variously by "C. Hullmandel", or "E.D. Smith, del and A Bailey Sculp". Please do not hesitate to email with questions or for more pictures. Very Good Condition: 4to, leather spine with marble boards; spine is grass green with gilt bands bracketing the title on a brown background with gilt lettering. Re-bound. Some age appropriate discoloration to the pages along with some shadowing, specifically of the title page due to age and ink composition. Pencil marks with occasional marginalia. "Hortus Gramineus Woburnensis: or, an Account of the Results of experiments on the Produce and Nutritive Qualities of Different Grasses and Other Plants used as the Food of the more valuable Domestic Animals: Instituted … [Click Below for Full Description]

ALBUM SMALL FOLIO WITH 17 HAND-COLOURED LITHOGRAPHS OF CHINESE LIFE & SCENES! LOVELY AND RARE!!! VOYAGE, ASIE, CHINE. [Click Below for Full Description]

Adams, John]
[None] August 8th, 1825, Quincy, MA. Twelvemo, [unpaginated]. Marbled boards, red leather spine with gilt bands. Edges worn, lower corner bumped. Scattered foxing, not affecting text. Signed by former President John Adams, after handwritten poem, penned by his granddaughter, Elizabeth Coombs Adams. The poem, which is partially based on verse from Ecclesiastes 12:1, reads as follows: "My young friend, Remember thy Creator in the days of thy youth and in extreme stages of thine old age, He will be thy comfort and support. John Adams. Quincy, August 8th, 1825." Adams made a correction in his own hand to "extreme," adding "est." At the time of this inscription, John Adams was plagued with arthritis and would pass away within 11 months. The rest of the volume is filled with poems, letters and notes from members of the Adams family. Provenance: this book was gifted from President Adams to "an in-law he considered a granddaughter," Susan Dayton Harrod Boyd. It was inherited by Susan Boyd's son, Charles, then to his daughter, Emily Dearborn Boyd, whose signatures appears on the front pastedown endpaper. It was inherited from Emily Boyd by her grandson, Charles Boyd Coleman, who sold it to Gray Collections. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
