Posthumous Poems of Percy Bysshe Shelley.

London: John and Henry L. Hunt, 1824. Octavo, 415 pp., bound without the errata; contemporary polished green calf, An attractive copy of this important collection, with a short but poignant biographical notice by Mary Shelley.Shelley died in July 1822, drowned in the sea off Livorno. Mary spent the ensuing year in Genoa with Leigh Hunt and his family, but returned to London in 1823 where she was granted a small allowance by Percy's disapproving father Sir Timothy, and busied herself with literary work, including editing many of his poems and manuscripts for this edition. It includes Julian and Maddalo, The Witch of Atlas, Letter to Maria Gisborne, The Triumph of Life, Prince Athanase, Ode to Naples, Mont Blanc, as well as fifty-nine 'Miscellaneous Poems', nine 'Fragments', five translations, and Alastor (included because the original volume, published in 1816, was now so scarce that even Mary had found it difficult to track down a copy). An attractive and fresh copy with a few bumps and scuffs.

Although this was the author's only work -- his life being cut short by scarlet fever -- in it he anticipates both the first and second law of thermodynamics. Carnot's work was born out of the need to improve the new two-cylinder compound steam engine developed in the first part of the century. Instead of focusing on the properties of steam, as others had done, Carnot proposed a general theory of heat as a motive force. As PMM notes: "the book was essentially an attempt to calculate the mechanical equivalent of heat." Carnot's work was to profoundly influence Helmholtz and Joule and led directly to the enunciation of the theory of the conservation of energy by Helmholtz. The second law of thermodynamics is also implicit in Carnot's treatise... Carnot's... researches led also to the absolute scale of temperature" (PMM). Only 600 copies of the work were printed. Near Fine.

A Picturesque Tour along the Rivers Ganges and Jumna, in India: consisting of Twenty-four Highly Finished and Coloured Views, a Map, and Vignettes, from Original Drawings made on the Spot; with Illustrations, Historical and Descriptive.

London, R. Ackermann, 1824 - Quarto (332 × 264 mm). Recent red full morocco Cosway-style binding by Bayntun, with a miniature painting (under glass) set into the front cover, showing the Taj Mahal in the center of the panel, surrounded by eight smaller paintings of Indian historic sites, the space between the ovals in-filled with minute gilt floral motifs, richly gilt spine, single-line gilt border on sides enclosing gilt panel with ornamental corners, all edges gilt, richly gilt turn-ins, red watered silk endleaves, preserved in a custom made fleece-lined red cloth slipcase. Embossed library stamp of Donald Duncan MacDermid on a preliminary blank. Occasional light offsetting from letterpress to plate (and vice versa). With folding engraved map as a frontispiece, 24 fine hand-coloured aquatint plates by Hunt or Sutherland after Forrest, title page and last leaf each with a hand-coloured aquatint vignette. Watermarks: plates 1825; text 1821 & 1824. First edition of one of the finest colour plate books on India, originally issued in six monthly numbers. "The illustrations are clear and bright, finely engraved, frequently printed in two colours, and well finished by hand they are a brave attempt to express what the author in the glittering and oriental peroration to his preface describes as 'the enchanting features of India, eternally glowing in the brilliant glory of the resplendent Asiatic sun'" (Martin Hardie). They are also eulogised in Mildred Archer and Ronald Lightbown's India Observed: India as viewed by British Artists 1760-1860 (V&A 1982): "Beautiful in themselves, they also mark an evolution from earlier aquatints, whose subjects sparkle under an eternal sunlight, in showing at times an evening light or stormy skies. This moodiness of landscape is of course very much in Romantic taste. Forrest may have supervised their colouring with more care than was always usual". Forrest served with the 3rd East Kent Regiment ('The Buffs') from 1802-14 in India and in the Peninsula, acting as Major of Brigade in Bengal in 1810; he purchased a commission as Major in the 34th Cumberland Regiment of Foot in 1814, having been appointed Deputy Assistant in the Quarter Master-General's Department in 1813, and served in the war in America in 1815 as Assistant Quarter-Master General, seeing action at New Orleans, his journal of the campaign was published in 1961. His Indian tour was undertaken in 1807, motivated by "a desire to explore [Bengal's] grander and wilder beauties." A superbly bound copy with a most attractive miniature on the front cover.       Rolland, Lisboa (Lissabon): 1824 - Lisboa (Lissabon): Rolland 1824, (12°, 10 x 15 cm). 24, 294 S., 1 Bl., 90 S. (Supplemento), 3 Bll.(Annoncen) u. 24 gefaltete Kupferstichkarten. Brauner geglätteter Kalbslederband mit Rückenschild u. etwas Rückenvergoldung. (Kanten leicht berieben, einige leichte Bleistiftanstreichungen. Exemplar auf festem Papier, insgesamt gut erhalten). Selten / Rare. * vgl. Phillips 3504. (Kanten leicht berieben, einige leichte Bleistiftanstreichungen. Exemplar auf festem Papier, insgesamt gut erhalten). Selten / Rare. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
