1824 - First Issue of Livingston's Louisiana Penal Code Livingston, Edward [1764-1836]. System of Penal Law, Prepared for the State of Louisiana: Comprising Codes of Offenses and Punishments, Of Procedure, Of Prison Discipline, And of Evidence Applicable as Well to Civil as to Criminal Cases. And a Book, Containing Definitions of All the Technical Words Used in This System. New Orleans: Benjamin Levy & Co., 1824. 164 pp. (12-1/4" x 7-1/2"). Recent period-style quarter calf over marbled boards, lettering piece and gilt fillets to spine. Light toning to text, negligible light foxing in a few places. * First edition. Livingston's Penal Code marked an epoch in the broad international movement for penal reform. Profoundly influenced by Bentham, it stressed prevention over vengeance. Never enacted, it nevertheless established itself as one of the great standards for other reformers. Hicks marvels at the scope and clear organization of this code and notes that Bentham, Hugo, Lafayette, Story, Marshall, Madison, Kent and Jefferson considered it "the most comprehensive and enlightened system of criminal law that has ever been presented to the world.": Hicks, Men and Books Famous in the Law 180.         Album with 47 charming drawings in several media by Paul Voituron (1824-1891) of Ghent and his sisters(?) and friends in France, Switzerland, Holland and Flanders.Various places, [1831-]1842-1844. Oblong (12.5×24 cm). With 47 drawings including the full-length colour portrait of what may be the gentleman-artist Paul Voituron, 8 coloured drawings (including 6 of flowers), 11 black and white drawings, 21 drawings with sepia (and in one case also red) washes, and 6 drawings with black and white washes, some highlighted with white chalk. Contemporary green textured half cloth, blind-stamped green textured paper sides, gilt edges.

      - For Paul Voituron: Van Praet & D'Hondt, Paul Voituron (1824-1891) en zijn denktank: levensschets en progressief gedachtegoed van een Gentse liberaal (2012). An album containing 47 mostly small pen and ink wash, pencil, watercolour and pastel drawings, several in colour. Several are signed by Paul Voituron (1824-1891) and his sisters(?) Hortense and Virginia Voituron, and the Mary who signed many drawings without a family name may be a Voituron as well. Paul Voituron was to become known as a progressive thinker in Ghent, but the Ghent University Library also has a large collection of his drawings. Other drawings in the album must have been drawn by family friends. The first drawing in the album is dated 1842 and several are dated 1842-1844, so one dated 1831 may have been mounted in the album long after it was drawn. Most of the drawings contain one or more human subjects, sometimes in portraits, other times as figures in landscapes. There are also several flower drawings. Together they give a charming view of daily life in Europe in the early 1840's. A few album leaves are detached and frayed at the edges, but the drawings themselves are in very good condition. The binding has lost its backstrip and is rubbed, with the sewing somewhat loose. A charming set of drawings by young ladies and gentlemen from Ghent on a Grand Tour of Europe.

ANTIQUITIES OUT OF ROME, THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CITIES OF LAZIO The work was published between 1824 and 1826, divided into four parts including Antichità di Tivoli, di Cora, di Albano e Castel Gandolfo, di Preneste e del Tuscolo. The series was preceded for the first time by an historic-critical introduction with the Explanation of the plates; he also included in the collection some line block plates of plans and monument restorations of great relevance. His preliminary Discorso states that his aim is to reach the highest number of collectors, not just to realize a study book. In his Antichità dei contorni di Roma, Rossini put together in one volume some analogous views Piranesi had already published along the years, with the aim to collect in one work all the antique monuments in the region of Southern Lazio. In his collection the artist tried to comply with the style of Piranesi, which can be found in the use of chiaroscuro, the choice of the framings and the subjects; even the front pages of every section, the archaeological and architectural elements are confusedly ordered inside the work. The majority of his subjects, especially the views of Tivoli and the Roman Castles, are still quite close to tradition of the veduta of the previous century. G. F. Gmelin, who had published a collection at the very beginning of the XIX century, can be considered his point of reference for that matter. Luigi Rossini incisore. Vedute di roma 1817 - 1850, catalogo della mostra a cura di L. Gavazzi, M. E. Tottoni, Roma Palazzo Braschi, 7 aprile - 15 luglio 1982. Roma Dimensioni 440 555mm

TALES OF A TRAVELLER. By Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. [pseudonym] ... In Two Volumes ...

London: John Murray, Albemarle-Street,. 1824. nineteenth-century full calf, all panels stamped in gold, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers.. Calf rubbed at edges, some of the gold stamping on spine panels. perished, half titles missing, a very good copy. (#137518). First edition. An important edition of the major repository of Irving's supernatural stories, ten in all, including "The Adventure of the German Student," which Bleiler proclaims "one of the early masterpieces of horror" and "The Devil and Tom Walker," which, as "one of Irving's best weird tales, takes its rightful place among devil stories popular in the nineteenth century" (Benjamin Franklin Fisher IV, Bleiler [ed], Supernatural Fiction Writers: Fantasy and Horror, p. 689). "Irving was America's first major literary celebrity and enjoyed a long, successful career free from the kind of tragedy that tormented contemporaries such as Hawthorne and Poe, though it eventually added a romantic glow to their reputations -- everyone loves a tormented genius. Irving, as a master of both comic and tragic material, has suffered in posterity from the difficulty readers have in reconciling the two. Like so many other writers who have appreciated how humor and horror serve as foils for each other (consider Dickens, Twain, W. W. Jacobs, Barry Pain among others) his dark side tends to be minimized in the pubic eye. This collection shows both sides, and also shows Irving at work misdirecting readers in order to shield himself from the charge so commonly directed at fiction in this period, that it was frivolous nonsense, or worse." - Robert Eldridge. "Irving's supernatural fiction is still fresh -- amusing or horrible as the case may be -- and much worth reading." - E. F. Bleiler, Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, pp. 224-5. This British edition includes five pieces (one of which is "The Adventure of the German Student") which are not in the first U.S. edition, published in Philadelphia by Carey and Lea in 1824 in four paper-covered parts. A revised and extended two-volume U.S. edition, including the five pieces omitted from the first U.S. edition, was published in New York by C. S. Van Winkle in 1825. "TALES OF A TRAVELLER (1824), much neglected and often maligned by critics, contains some of Irving's best art in the supernatural mode." - Fisher, Supernatural, p. 688. Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 2-92. Barron (ed), Horror Literature 1-47 (in reference to "The German Student" as a tale of terror). Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 885. Survey of Modern Fantastic Literature IV, pp. 1557-9. Tymn, Horror Literature, 1-182 (in reference to "The German Student" as a Gothic). Bleiler (1978), p. 107. Not in Reginald (1979; 1992).         Catalogus librorum Bibliothecae Caesareae univeritatis literarum charcoviensis. Cura Basilii Dzunkowsky

Charcoviae 1824. Typis academicis. - First edition, very rare: the first printed catalogue of Kharkiv University Library, one of the major universities of the Russian Empire (and the second oldest in Ukraine, after Lviv), founded in 1804. It was edited by Vasil Dzhunkovsky (1767–1826), Rector of the University, 1821–6. The catalogue contains thousands of books—divided into seven sections: theology, law, philosophy, medicine, mathematics, history, and philology—in a variety of languages (Latin, French, German, Greek, Swedish, Polish, Russian). Even if English books are not well represented, English-speaking authors certainly are: Bacon, Beattie, Berkeley, Blackstone, Burke, Cook, Dryden, Ferguson, Halley, Hume, Hutcheson, Johnson (67 volumes [of 75] from The Works of the English Poets, 1790), Locke, Malthus, Milton, Newton, Pope, Priestley, Reid, Shakespeare, Adam Smith, Steuart (Tourneisen editions of The Plays (plus a number of translations), the Wealth of Nations, and the Inquiry being among the few English books in the catalogue), Sterne, Swift, and Arthur Young. Gennadi, Literatura russkoi bibliografii (St Petersburg, 1858, item 552) calls for two tables, but the copy at Kharkiv University (listed in its online catalogue) has only one, as here; the National Library of Russia does not mention a table at all. These are the only other copies I could locate. Not in COPAC or WorldCat. 8vo (218 × 130 mm), pp. [2], iv, [2], 511, [1]; with a large folding table; printed on tinted paper; title a little creased, but a good copy in contemporary half calf, worn, spine rather dry, upper joint cracked, with parts of the leather missing along the board, but cords still firm, paper spine label (chipped) lettered gilt.         NAMPO-JO^

1824. Good. [EHON] Nagayama KOIN, artist. Tani SEIKO, printer. NAMPO-JO. N.P., N.D., [Osaka, Bunsei 7 {1824}]. 25.4 x 18 cm. This copy, string-bound, Japanese- style, fukuro-toji, has the original printed title label. Almost certainly a later impression of a book which first appeared under the title SEIKO JO, it is a memorial volume in honor of Shokusanjin [Ota Nampo] who died a bit before this book was created. Seiko, a close friend, assembled a volume of Ota's verse and calligraphy, had Koin create the lovely Shijo style illustrations and cut and printed the book himself. One of the more elusive of the ehon of its time and a lovely one. This copy is missing the first and final sheets, thus the preface and colophon. It is only a noble fragment. The covers are worn and spotted, the impressions and colors good. See Keyes catalog of the Ehon collection at the NYPL, #49. Mitchell 465-6.

RAMESES; AN EGYPTIAN TALE: WITH HISTORICAL NOTES, OF THE ERA OF THE PHARAOHS

Printed [by Thomas Davison] for G. B. Whittaker, London 1824 - 204 x 126 mm. (8 x 5"). Three volumes Publisher's drab paper boards, paper title label on spines, edges untrimmed. Front pastedown with the bookplate of H. Bradley Martin; pencilled note on front flyleaf identifying this as the Bellew copy (see below for both) . Boards with a scattering of small faint spots, negligible rubbing to joints, spine ends bumped (as always), trivial thin worm trail at inner margin of one quire, but AN EXCEPTIONALLY FINE COPY, the insubstantial bindings with nothing approaching a significant imperfection, and the text clean, fresh, and bright, and with generous margins. This Victorian "three-decker" was issued at a time when publisher's temporary boards, intended to be replaced by a binding of the buyer's choosing, were giving way to publisher's cloth bindings that were "library-ready." With content that is reflected in the work's title, "Ramses" is one of two "exotic" novels by bookseller and orientalist Edward Upham (1776-1834), who was known and respected for his non-fiction works on Buddhism and the history of Ceylon. A pencilled note on the front flyleaf says that this copy was once owned by the meticulous Irish collector Christopher Bellew, whose library specialized in books in original boards. Dublin bookseller M. J. MacManus was charged with selling the collection in the 1930s; in his catalogue he observed that Bellew "stored his books in specially-constructed cupboards, dust-proof and damp-proof. Many of them he did not live to read, but even those which he read suffered nothing in the process. . . . Here is a wide range of uncommon and attractive volumes, offered in a condition so dazzlingly fine that by their very appearance they will lend distinction to the bookshelves of the most fastidious collector." The noted collector and bibliographer of 19th century fiction Michael Sadleir was nearly propelled into ecstasy at reading the Bellew catalogue, assuring us that "it would hardly be possible to over-state the perfection of Bellew condition." Unsurprisingly, this set found its way into the library of the fastidious H. Bradley Martin (1906-88), an American bibliophile who was extraordinarily discriminating. His copy of any book will always be distinguished as having been a part of a library chosen by one of the most discerning of modern collectors. The heir to a steel fortune and a director at a leading New York investment bank, Martin was a member of the Grolier Club for 50 years and was one of the great American book collectors of the 20th century. His library of 10,000 volumes was sold at Sotheby's in nine sales that took place in 1989-90. This work is quite rare on the market; we were able to trace only four copies at auction.         Six Months Residence and Travels in Mexico

John Murray 1824 - BULLOCK, W. Six Months? Residence and Travels in Mexico, London: John Murray, 1824. Octavo, first edition, pp. xii, 532, plus 15 aquatint plates (four hand-colored costume plates, 11 plates of landscape and seascape views), folding frontis (View of the City and Valley of Mexico), two folding maps, folding table (distances between cities and towns), contemporary marbled paper-covered boards half-bound in black calf, rebacked with dark green calf with a lighter green label, gilt lettering and rules. Very good with former owner?s name inked onto free front endpaper, boards rubbed at extremities, scattered light to moderate foxing. See Sabin 9140, Abbey 666, Palau 37059. Sabin says, ?This author was the first English traveler in Mexico since Father Gage, in 1640, to write an account of his travels,? but this is open to question. In any case, the illustration is important and interesting, showing a plan for the City of Mexico based on the map made by Garcia Conde. Bullock was certainly an unusual travel writer, as not only does he describe the daily life and interesting features of the country, but also how he took control of a silver mine in Themascaltepec. Edward Talbotwas born in Ireland in 1796, and emigrated with his family and a partyof Irish immigrants to Middlesex County, near London, Ontario, UpperCanada in 1818. He was successively a teacher and a journalist, foundingthe radical "London Sun" in 1831. He travelled extensively throughoutUpper and Lower Canada, and was only 23 when he wrote this work which waspublished in London. He describes the life in Upper Canada at the time, and gives a detailed account of the flora and fauna, climate, society, education, emigration, manners and Indians, of the Lower Canadians.Talbot's account was written with a view to giving a more realisticappraisal of the prospects and difficulties for immigrants than he feltwas afforded by a number of contemporary works. "Edward Allen Talbot, ayoung Irishman, described the trip taken by his family up the St.Lawrence in search of a new life, replacing the discouragement ofimproved gentility in Ireland. Lively impression of Montreal, Kingston,York and the London region are capped by a last description of hissolitary pedestrian return to Montreal. As a picturesque tour his bookis cheerful and entertaining. But the book was written to warn potentialemigrants of the danger of trusting agents' accounts of the new country, and to show the "semi-barbarism"of life in the settlements. This led himto brilliant humourous accounts of "bees", "Charivaris", [Chivaree], newYork's visits, tavern life, elections and agricultural practics".Waterston p42. .

System of Penal Law, Prepared for the State of Louisiana [With]...

1824. First Issue of Livingston's Louisiana Penal Code Livingston, Edward [1764-1836]. New Orleans: Benjamin Levy & Co., 1824. 164 pp. Sir, You Will Herewith Receive the First of Four Codes, Which Forms...

1824. Livingston Solicits Criticism of His System of Penal Law Livingston, Edward [1764-1836]. [Plumer, William (1759-1850)]. Sir, You Will Herewith Receive the First of Four Codes, Which Forms a System of Penal Law, Prepared for the State of Louisiana. [Running Title]. New York, November 29, 1824. Single sheet folded once to form two 9-3/4" x 7-1/4" leaves. Printed text on recto of first leaf, signed in type, verso of second leaf addressed. Light toning, a bit of discoloration to corners, fold lines, fold between the two sheets torn, but mended on verso with archival tape, small stain from sealing wax, light rubbing to edges. A rare item. * Livingston mailed this circular letter to distinguished jurists and political figures to solicit feedback on the final draft of the first part of his System of Penal Law. It was, in effect, a cover sheet. He explains the nature of the code and asks his readers "to note in the margin such observations as occur to you for its amelioration, and to communicate them to me with your first leisure. He ends his letter with a request for "the aid of your learning, experience, and judgment, to supply what is deficient, and to correct what is erroneous in the work." Plumer, the recipient of this copy was an important New Hampshire lawyer, politician and Baptist lay preacher. He is best known for his efforts to convert Dartmouth College into a public institution while governor of New Hampshire, a post he held in 1812-1813 and 1816-1819. His efforts resulted in the great U.S. Supreme Court case Trustees of Dartmouth College v. Woodward. Livingston's circular is a rare item. However, a few copies are found today bound into copies of the System. Shaw and Shoemaker, American Imprints 16927.
