Observations on the anatomy of the duck-billed animal of New South Wales, the Ornithorynchus paradoxus of naturalists [AND] Observations on the organs of digestion and their appendages, and on the organs of respiration and circulation, in the Ornithorynchus paradoxus [AND] On the kidneys, urinary bladder, and organs of generation, in the male of the Ornithorynchus paradoxus.

      - Edinburgh, Adam Black, 1824. 8vo (20.8 x 13.4 cm). 15+6+24 pp., three engraved plates. Contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards. Spine with gilt lines and title. Marbled endpapers. Speckled edges.l Three early accounts on the anatomy and morphology of one of Australia's most famous mammals: the duck-billed Platypus, then a still quite mysterious animal, by Robert Knox. The three plates show the "poison gland and duct in the foot" (it is the only poisonous mammal), the "complex clavicle and scapulae", and the "organs of generation in the male". On page 27, Knox remarked "It is well known that the specimens of this very extraordinary animal first brought to Europe were considered by many as impositions. They reached England by vessels which had navigated the Indian seas, a circumstance in itself sufficient to rouse the suspicions of the scientific naturalist, aware of the monstrous impostures which the artful Chinese had so frequently practised on European adventurers.". Contained in volume 5(1) of the 'Memoirs of the Wernerian Natural History Society', together with several unrelated papers, as well as Knox' two accounts "of the foramen centrale of the retina, generally called the "Foramen of Soemmering", as seen in the eyes of certain reptiles", with a fine plate. Boards extremities somewhat rubbed and worn; old stamp on title page. A few marginalia in the index (not in Knox's paper). A very good copy. Rare. Not in Ferguson. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Rosa Montezuma / Rosier des Montezuma

Paris 1824 - Stipple engraving, printed in colours and finished by hand, engraved by Langlois. Very good condition apart. More than with any other painter, Redouté's flowers are alive, and always shown at the ephemeral moment of their greatest beauty. Pierre-Joseph Redouté was one of the world's great flower painters. Born into a family that had been painters for at least two generations, Redouté went to Paris in 1782 with his brother where they worked as scene painters for the Théâtre Italien. Redouté painted flowers in his spare time. The search for subjects led him to the Jardin du Roi and eventually to Gerard van Spaendonck who made him an assistant. While at the Jardin du Roi, Redouté came to know Charles-Louis L'Heritier, an amateur botanist and writer of independent means. He gave Redouté a full-time job as an illustrator, instructing him in plant anatomy. Redouté's scientific understanding of plants contributed greatly to the clarity of his depictions. But it was Redouté's work in stipple engraving and colour printing that was to be of the greatest importance. Stippling and the application of two or three colour inks to one plate were engraving innovations that Redouté brought to French printmaking, and these were brought to perfection in Les Roses from which this work comes. Redouté together with Claude-Antoine Thory, an ardent botanist and collector of roses, have together in Les Roses produced a work not only of great artistic merit, but also an invaluable scientific record as well. `Redouté and Thory knew, described and figured almost all the important roses known in their day. Included were many of the key ancestors of our present-day roses. The plates in Les Roses have artistic value, botanical and documentary value, both for the species and cultivars still surviving and for those that have disappeared' (Gisele de la Roche). The roses used as specimens for the work were taken from the collections of Thory, the Malmaison gardens, and from other collections around Paris. Many of the flowers were novelties in Redouté's time, and a number were dedicated to the memory of his friends and acquaintances, such as l'Héritier de Brutelle and Ventenat. Cf.         Sir, You Will Herewith Receive the First of Four Codes, Which Forms.

1824 - Livingston Solicits Criticism of His System of Penal Law Livingston, Edward [1764-1836]. [Plumer, William (1759-1850)]. Sir, You Will Herewith Receive the First of Four Codes, Which Forms a System of Penal Law, Prepared for the State of Louisiana. [Running Title]. New York, November 29, 1824. Single sheet folded once to form two 9-3/4" x 7-1/4" leaves. Printed text on recto of first leaf, signed in type, verso of second leaf addressed. Light toning, a bit of discoloration to corners, fold lines, fold between the two sheets torn, but mended on verso with archival tape, small stain from sealing wax, light rubbing to edges. A rare item. $750. * Livingston mailed this circular letter to distinguished jurists and political figures to solicit feedback on the final draft of the first part of his System of Penal Law. It was, in effect, a cover sheet. He explains the nature of the code and asks his readers "to note in the margin such observations as occur to you for its amelioration, and to communicate them to me with your first leisure. He ends his letter with a request for "the aid of your learning, experience, and judgment, to supply what is deficient, and to correct what is erroneous in the work." Plumer, the recipient of this copy was an important New Hampshire lawyer, politician and Baptist lay preacher. He is best known for his efforts to convert Dartmouth College into a public institution while governor of New Hampshire, a post he held in 1812-1813 and 1816-1819. His efforts resulted in the great U.S. Supreme Court case Trustees of Dartmouth College v. Woodward. Livingston's circular is a rare item. However, a few copies are found today bound into copies of the System. Shaw and Shoemaker, American Imprints 16927. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

fore edge painting of Windsor Castle, 1824 1st edition Wolsey & His Times

Sherwood, Jones & Co, Thomas Davidson, Paternoster Row 1824 - A wonderful fore edge painting view of Windsor Castle decorates this beautiful 19th century first edition biography of Cardinal Wolsey & His Times. Contemporary (1824) Review - "The very name of Wolsey has for ages been a bye- word to express the instability of human grandeur. To publish a life of Wolsey, however, at the present day, Mr. Howard observes, may seem a work of supererogation; and, to confess the truth, we are entirely of that opinion. However, here it is, and very respectably executed. As an apology for undertaking it, Mr. H. says he thinks there was still room for such a life as should refer principally to personal biography, with the peculiar customs and manners of the times; and should notice general politics, foreign or domestic, no farther than such a notice was absolutely necessary to make the personal details intelligible." (The Monthly Review, Griffiths, p. 284, 1824) Physical Attributes Measures 22 x 14 x 3.25 cm, 8vo (size). Red moroccan leather binding, gilt decorations to spine and boards, title lettered in gilt on spine. AEG (All Edges Gilt). Fore edge painting of Windsor Castle. Pages – (2), xvi, 592, (2). With a frontispiece portrait, printer’s mark on title page, five small illustrations. Condition Rubbing, especially at corners and joints. Several scrapes across front and rear board. Spine has sporadic loss of color and a chipped top of the spine. Bookplate of George Evans Williamson, and ticket of bookseller Ingalton on Eton on front fixed endpaper. Foxing to title page and endpapers; ink of frontispiece has ghosted onto title page. Occasional spot of foxing within text block. Spot on page 112. Despite some wear, a handsome bright and attractive book with a mostly clean text block and bright and colorful fore edge painting. About the Author George Howard was a pseudonym for Francis Charles Laird, also author of Lady Jane Grey & Her Times, as well as The Beauties of England & Wales. About the Ticketed Bookseller "Thomas Ingalton Senior’s bookshop, at the Thames end of Eton High Street, was also successful. Thomas was not only a bookseller but a printer, bookbinder and publisher. He supplied stationary and art materials, sold lottery tickets and was an agent for the Sun, Fire & Life Insurance Company. He probably sold William Ingalton’s paintings (his cousin). He certainly published and sold prints that would have been displayed in his shop window." About the Publisher "Print and book publisher. William Sherwood (1776-1837) first worked for Symonds in Paternoster Row, taking over the business with Neely and Jones in 1806; trading in the 1820s variously as Sherwood & Co., Sherwood, Jones & Co and Sherwood, Gilbert & Piper." About Paternaster Row, Where The Book Was Published "The area was a centre of the London publishing trade, with booksellers operating from the street. In 1819 Paternoster Row was described as "almost synonymous" with the book trade. The street was devastated by aerial bombardment during the Blitz of World War II, suffering particularly heavy damage in the night raid of 29–30 December 1940, later characterized as the Second Great Fire of London, during which an estimated 5 million books were lost in the fires caused by tens of thousands of incendiary bombs. The street was replaced with Paternoster Square, the modern home of the London Stock Exchange, although a City of London Corporation road sign remains in the square near where Paternoster Row once stood."         Stultifera navis. | The ship of fooles.Including:MANCINI, Domenico (Dominicus MANCINUS). The mirrour of good maners.PIUS II, Pope (Eneas SILVIO). Certayne egloges . whereof the first three conteyne the miseryes of courtiers and courtes of all princes in general, .(Colophon: London, John Cawood), 1570. Small folio (27 x 19.5 cm). With a large woodcut on the title-page showing four ships filled with fools (15.5 x 10 cm), and 116 woodcuts in the text (mostly ca. 11 x 8 cm) including 11(?) repeats. Gold-tooled brown calf (ca. 1855?), each board with a large built-up centrepiece and a built-up frame, gold-tooled turn-ins. Rebacked preserving the original backstrip.

      - ESTC S107135; Pforzheimer 41; for the woodcuts: Hodnett 1824-1881, 1883-1899, 1901-1931. The famous second (1570) Latin and English edition of Sebastian Brant's great Ship of fools, containing Jakob Locher's Latin verse translation, Alexander Barclay's English verse translation and Barclay's printed annotations in the fore-edge margins. Brant first published his Ship of fools in German as Narrenschiff in 1494. The present edition is illustrated with the woodcuts made for Pynson's very rare 1509 edition, and they are better printed here than in 1509 (Pforzheimer notes that all but "two or three" are "very well preserved"). The woodcuts are based on those of the first (German) edition of 1494 where some are ascribed to the Master of Haintz-Narr and others formerly to Albrecht Dürer (but now to the Master of the Johann Bergman printing office).Sebastian Brandt (1457-1521) is famous largely for this verse satire, where more than a hundred fools set sail without a pilot in search of a fool's paradise. Each episode harshly satirizes one particular vice or folly, sparing neither clergy nor scholars, and each fool meets his death in an appropriate manner. Brant satirizes men and women in all walks of life and engaged in various activities, so the woodcuts add not only immediacy, beauty and humour, but also a view of historical clothing, implements and customs. Although intended as a dire warning of the perils of foolish behaviour, immorality and short-sighted actions, the book proved enormously popular largely because of its black humour, and it saw many translations, adaptations and spin-offs. It probably also influenced Shakespeare and many other literary works. With bookplates of the London investment banker and Mexican mining entrepreneur Joseph Tasker (1797-1861) of Middleton Hall; the bibliophile Charles William Dyson Perrins (1864-1958); and the bibliophile and bookseller William Foyle (1885-1963). With an occasional running head, folio number or marginal note slightly shaved, one leaf with browned patches, the title-page slightly dirty and a few marginal chips or tears repaired, but still in good condition. The binding has been rebacked, probably with new headbands, but the binding is also good. The very influential second edition of the best English translation of a universal classic.

Levrault, 1824, in 8°, 2ff. XXI-256 pp., 1f. d'errata, demi-veau vert époque, dos lisse orné, rousseurs et qq. taches en marge sinon bon exemplaire. Edition originale rare. ¶ D.S.B. III p. 243 "Following the completion of his investigation of natural fats, Chevreul wrote a work of a more general nature, Considérations générales sur l'analyse organique (1824), which is a reflection on the many years of research with organic materials. Here Chevreul considered the methods of research in organic chemistry, methods that he himself used with such success in his investigations. The primary analytical problems were how to determine whether one had a pure substance or a mixture and how to resolve the frequently complex animal or plant material into its immediate principles. It was Chevreul who placed this immediate analysis on a rigorous basis. He considered the methods used in handling natural products, in isolating pure substances from them in unaltered form, and in recognizing their purity. He gave precise criteria for what constituted a pure organic compound and presented for the first time a clear and accurate account of the methods of immediate analysis that must necessarily precede elementary analysis.'' - En Français dans le texte n°237 "prolongement plus méthodologique de ses recherches (sur les coprs gras)..."

Introductory Report to a System of Penal Law Prepared for the State.

1824 - New Orleans: Benjamin Levy & Co., 1824. First Issue of the Introductory Report to Livingston's Louisiana System of Penal Law [Livingston, Edward (1764-1836)]. Introductory Report to a System of Penal Law Prepared for the State of Louisiana [headline title]. [New Orleans: Benjamin Levy & Co., 1824]. 185 pp. (12-1/4" x 7-1/2"). Recent period-style quarter calf over marbled boards, gilt title and date to spine. Light toning to text, negligible light foxing in a few places. Ex-library. Small inkstamp to head of p. 1. $2,000. * First edition. Livingston's Penal Code marked an epoch in the broad international movement for penal reform. Profoundly influenced by Bentham, it stressed prevention over vengeance in every facet of his work. Never enacted, it nevertheless established itself as one of the great standards for other reformers. The Introductory Report reviews the issues addressed by the Code. Bibliographically distinct, it was probably transmitted to the Louisiana General Assembly with the Code, a point suggested by its first sentence: "I lay before the General Assembly, with unaffected diffidence, the System which they directed me to prepare" (1). Bibliographic data is not included in the first edition of the Introductory Report, but Jumanville and Korn attribute the printing to Levy. Hicks, Men and Books Famous in the Law 180. He retired from the army in 1815 and devoted the rest of his life to antiquarian topology. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1815 and was a founding member of the Royal Geographical Society.         THE HUNTERS OF KENTUCKY [caption title]

[N.p., 1824. Broadside, 7 1/2 x 5 3/4 inches. Printed in two columns, ornamental border. Light foxing, wear, and toning. About very good. Songsheet commemorating Andrew Jackson's victory at the Battle of New Orleans. The song praises the valor and and tenacity of the Kentucky troops under Jackson's command. First written in 1821, Jackson later used the song in his presidential campaigns in 1824 and 1828. "But Jackson he was wide awake, / And was'nt scar'd at trifles, / For well he knew what aim we take . With our Kentucky rifles; / Se he led us down to Cypress Swamp, / The ground being low and mucky, / There stood John Bull in martial pomp, / But here was old Kentucky." Scarce and ephemeral.

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

First edition. Hardcover. g to vg. Quarto (9 1/4 x 6"). XVI, 410pp. Modern half black morocco over marbled paper covered boards. Raised bands. Ribbon marker. Marbled endpapers. Engraved title vignette. First Edition of Champollion's celebrated compendium of the hieroglyphic system, a foundational text of modern Egyptology. In this remarkable work the author describes, step by step, with numerous examples and details, the method he followed to discover and document the three aspects of hieroglyphics: the phonogram images, the figurative representations, and the symbolic representations. These three types of characters, used together, have been the source of so many confusions in the previous attempts to achieve their decoding. Once his description is completed, Champollion compares his method to the one which was described by Clement of Alexandria in his "Stromata."This work is complete with its 16 full-page plates, including many folded.Binding slightly rubbed along joints. Ex-library bookplate on inside of front cover. Half-title age-toned. Sporadic foxing / age-toning throughout. Text in French. Binding in overall good+, interior in good to very good condition.

Stultifera navis. | The ship of fooles. Including: MANCINI, Domenico ( Dominicus MANCINUS). The mirrour of good maners. PIUS II, Pope (Eneas SILVIO). Certayne egloges ... whereof the first three conteyne the miseryes of courtiers and courtes of all princes in general, ...(Colophon: London, John Cawood), 1570.

ESTC S107135; Pforzheimer 41; for the woodcuts: Hodnett 1824-1881, 1883-1899, 1901-1931.

ANTIQUITIES OUT OF ROME, THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CITIES OF LAZIO The work was published between 1824 and 1826, divided into four parts including Antichità di Tivoli, di Cora, di Albano e Castel Gandolfo, di Preneste e del Tuscolo. The series was preceded for the first time by an historic-critical introduction with the Explanation of the plates; he also included in the collection some line block plates of plans and monument restorations of great relevance. His preliminary Discorso states that his aim is to reach the highest number of collectors, not just to realize a study book. In his Antichità dei contorni di Roma, Rossini put together in one volume some analogous views Piranesi had already published along the years, with the aim to collect in one work all the antique monuments in the region of Southern Lazio. In his collection the artist tried to comply with the style of Piranesi, which can be found in the use of chiaroscuro, the choice of the framings and the subjects; even the front pages of every section, the archaeological and architectural elements are confusedly ordered inside the work. The majority of his subjects, especially the views of Tivoli and the Roman Castles, are still quite close to tradition of the veduta of the previous century. G. F. Gmelin, who had published a collection at the very beginning of the XIX century, can be considered his point of reference for that matter. Luigi Rossini incisore. Roma Dimensioni 650 460mm

The case of Lecesne and Escoffery

London, 1824-8 - Original set of Court Papers for the legal case brought in London comprising Dispatches sent by Lord Manchester, Governor of Jamaica from 1824 to 1827, 728pp + Letters received from the Colonial Department 1824-7, 104pp + "Statement of the Estate & Effects of George Mackay of Pembroke in Trelawny" together with papers relating to this, 11pp. + 1828 Affidavits and papers to support the claim that Louis Lecesne had not in fact been born in Jamaica + sundry other papers relating to the case. All in neat and clear manuscript in fine condition housed in quarter calf box. Also 1825 House of Commons report on the affair and a finely bound book of photocopies of Legal works connected with the case. These documents, dealing with Jamaica’s colonial jurisprudence, will be of great interest to lawyers and historians, particularly to legal historians, interested in the unfair, discriminatory and inhuman colonial legal and judicial system. People conversant with the present day principles of civil liberties and human rights will be shocked to read these legal documents highlighting the iniquitous and heartless colonial jurisprudence and callous judicial system. These documents show the colonial cruel and injudicious slave-owning mentality persisting in the 1820s and after. Simply stated, the facts of this long and sordid episode in Jamaica, where justice was finally achieved by a tortuous route to the British House of Commons, were that in 1823 the governor of Jamaica, acting hastily upon rumours of revolt by slaves and others against the Jamaican government, deported to Haiti two liquor merchants, who were disenfranchised ‘people of colour’. This was done despite the fact that, during the deportation process, they were freed from detention, for lack of evidence, by the courts accepting their application under a petition of habeaus corpus. The proceedings of this case in Jamaica in the 19th century case highlight the heavy handedness of the colonial authorities against former slaves and other subjugated minorities. It is important to emphasise that in those days the laws of categorising the population of Jamaica, and some other colonies, were rather complicated and cumbersome. For example, people of colour (mostly the result of white fathers and black mothers) unless born free or ‘manumized’ (the act of liberation of a slave from bondage: see Fenwick v. Chapman 9 Pet 472), remained slaves until the fourth degree. Until the mixing of blood had reached that degree, they remained slaves. People in colonies were categorised as whites, free people of colour, free blacks, people of colour in slavery, and blacks in slavery. The restrictions on non-whites were grievously onerous and obnoxious. For example, all non-whites were incapacitated by the Jamaican law-makers from giving evidence against white persons. The two merchants were lucky as a British sea captain took them from Haiti to England. On finding out their plight, some of the Abolitionists took their petition to the House of Commons. The parliamentary debates and the document produced therefor are of great interest. So is the other correspondence connection with this, particularly a letter written on 17th September 1816 by Stephen Lushington to William Courtenay. A related Court of the King’s Bench law report of 1830 of a libel case again John Murray, a bookseller of repute, is also included: R. v. Murray. The two merchants eventually were found to have been born in Jamaica and to be Jamaican citizens. As such they could not have been deported. They triumphantly returned to Jamaica.

System of Penal Law, Prepared for the State of Louisiana.

1824 - First Issue of Livingston's Louisiana Penal Code Livingston, Edward [1764-1836]. System of Penal Law, Prepared for the State of Louisiana: Comprising Codes of Offenses and Punishments, Of Procedure, Of Prison Discipline, And of Evidence Applicable as Well to Civil as to Criminal Cases. And a Book, Containing Definitions of All the Technical Words Used in This System. New Orleans: Benjamin Levy & Co., 1824. 164 pp. (12-1/4" x 7-1/2"). Recent period-style quarter calf over marbled boards, lettering piece and gilt fillets to spine. Light toning to text, negligible light foxing in a few places. * First edition. Livingston's Penal Code marked an epoch in the broad international movement for penal reform. Profoundly influenced by Bentham, it stressed prevention over vengeance. Never enacted, it nevertheless established itself as one of the great standards for other reformers. Hicks marvels at the scope and clear organization of this code and notes that Bentham, Hugo, Lafayette, Story, Marshall, Madison, Kent and Jefferson considered it "the most comprehensive and enlightened system of criminal law that has ever been presented to the world.": Hicks, Men and Books Famous in the Law 180.         Album with 47 charming drawings in several media by Paul Voituron (1824-1891) of Ghent and his sisters(?) and friends in France, Switzerland, Holland and Flanders.Various places, [1831-]1842-1844. Oblong (12.5×24 cm). With 47 drawings including the full-length colour portrait of what may be the gentleman-artist Paul Voituron, 8 coloured drawings (including 6 of flowers), 11 black and white drawings, 21 drawings with sepia (and in one case also red) washes, and 6 drawings with black and white washes, some highlighted with white chalk. Contemporary green textured half cloth, blind-stamped green textured paper sides, gilt edges.

An album containing 47 mostly small pen and ink wash, pencil, watercolour and pastel drawings, several in colour. Several are signed by Paul Voituron (1824-1891) and his sisters(?) Hortense and Virginia Voituron, and the Mary who signed many drawings without a family name may be a Voituron as well. Paul Voituron was to become known as a progressive thinker in Ghent, but the Ghent University Library also has a large collection of his drawings. Other drawings in the album must have been drawn by family friends. The first drawing in the album is dated 1842 and several are dated 1842-1844, so one dated 1831 may have been mounted in the album long after it was drawn. Most of the drawings contain one or more human subjects, sometimes in portraits, other times as figures in landscapes. There are also several flower drawings. Together they give a charming view of daily life in Europe in the early 1840's. A few album leaves are detached and frayed at the edges, but the drawings themselves are in very good condition. The binding has lost its backstrip and is rubbed, with the sewing somewhat loose. A charming set of drawings by young ladies and gentlemen from Ghent on a Grand Tour of Europe.
