        Peter Schlemihl

London - G. andW. B. Whittaker, 1824. London - G. andW. B. Whittaker, 1824 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A particularly interesting and scarce copy of this first English translation of a wonderful story of a man with no shadow. First Edition, Second Issue. With frontispiece and seven further etchings by George Cruikshank. This issue has misattributed the original German story, stating 'from the German of Lamotte Fouque' when in fact it was written by exiled French aristocrat Adelbert von Chamisso. It also misspells the name of its illustrator as 'George Cruickshank'. According to Bates's essay on Cruikshank, 'collectors are anxious to secure early copies of the first edition, known by the printer's error in the name of the artist, where we find an adventitious 'c' - 'Cruickshank'. The error was corrected after a few copies had been worked off'. With 'Liberty of Opinion' bookplate of Charles Conway to front pastedown, and armorial bookplate of Charles F. S. Chambers to front free-endpaper. Adelbert von Chamisso (January 30, 1781 August 21, 1838) was a German poet and botanist. He had become lieutenant in 1801, and in 1805 accompanied his regiment to Hameln, where he shared in the humiliation of its treasonable capitulation in the following year. He joined the circle of Madame de Stal, and followed her in her exile to Coppet in Switzerland, where, devoting himself to botanical research, he remained nearly two years. In 1812 he returned to Berlin, where he continued his scientific studies. In the summer of the eventful year, 1813, he wrote the prose narrative Peter Schlemihl, the man who sold his shadow. This, the most famous of all his works, has been translated into most European languages (English by William Howitt). It was written partly to divert his own thoughts and partly to amuse the children of his friend Julius Eduard Hitzig. In the story, Schlemihl sells his shadow to the Devil for a bottomless wallet, only to find that a man without a shadow is shunned by human society. The woman he loves rejects him, and he spends the rest of his life wandering the world in scientific exploration. Condition: Rebacked in calf with original boards. Externally very sound, smart spine, older leather rubbed with loss. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and generallyclean aside from occasional instances of light scattered foxing, and off-setting from the plates. Ink annotation to verso of front free-endpaper. The half-title is missing, as is common. Overall: VERY GOOD.

PIAZZA VITTORIO EMANUUELE IN TORINO PLACE VICTOR EMANUEL À TURIN

FINE COPY.         Arrogance, (or Nonchalance) of the Tenth Retorted

Cruikshank, Robert. Arrogance, (or Nonchalance) of the Tenth Retorted. R. Cruikshank, fecit. London, April 1824 by Fairburn Broadway Ludgate Hill. BM Catalog #1464. Engraving, nicely hand-colored (11" x 18"). Very good condition. This satirical print, which attacks the manners of young English officers, pictures two scenes, one entitled Ball Room, in which young officers lounge about and refuse to dance with young ladies from Dublin society. "Trot her out. Let us see her foine legs," one of the soldiers calls. The other scene, Drawing Room, shows two young ladies ridiculing the officer in the same manner. "No, Wont do! Trot him out!!" Arrogance or Nonchalance recalls, in part, an insult to Dublin society made by the 10th Hussars who were stationed in Dublin at the time, and who were known for their impoliteness and arrogance. The Tenth was a fashionable regiment par excellence, of which George IV had been colonel till his accession. This print may allude to the allegation that officers from the regiment had stood beneath a theatre staircase to contemplate the legs of pretty women descending. Radical politics and suspicion of the Army inflamed the affair. Dislike of the dandy, often disparaged as effeminate, is also a factor, making this scene useful in understanding fashionable manners of the time.

Pompeiana. The Topography, Edifices and Ornaments of Pompeii

London - Rodwell and Martin, 1824. London - Rodwell and Martin, 1824 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A history of the antiquities of Pompeii, detailing the topography, edifices and ornamentscompiled by Sir William Gell and John P. Gandy andillustrated with numerousengraved plates and plans, some of which fold-out. In two volumes complete. A new edition. Sir William Gell (1777 - 1836) was an English classical archaeologist and illustrator. Some of his best known archaeological work includes Pompeiana and The Topography of Troy. His numerous drawings of classical ruins and localities, executed with great detail and exactness, are preserved in the British Museum. Gell was a thorough dilettante, fond of society and possessed of little real scholarship. Nonetheless his topographical works became recognised text-books at a time when Greece and even Italy were but superficially known to English travellers. He was a fellow of the Royal Society and the Society of Antiquaries of London, and a member of the Institute of France and the Royal Academy in Berlin. His best-known work is Pompeiana; the Topography, Edifices and, Ornaments of Pompeii, published between 1817 and 1832, in the first part of which he was assisted by John Peter Gandy (1787 - 1850), a British architect. It was followed in 1834 by the Topography of Rome and its Vicinity. He also wroteTopography of Troy and its Vicinity (1804); Geography and Antiquities of Ithaca (1807); Itinerary of Greece, with a Commentary on Pausanias and Strabo (1810); and Itinerary of the Morea (1816). Although these works have been superseded by later publications, they continue to provide valuable information for the study of classical topography. He is, together with his friends Edward Dodwell and Keppel Richard Craven, by some modern scholars seen as the founder of the study of the historical topography of the hinterland of Rome.         L'Aminta and Il Pastor Fido

Milano - Dalla Tipografia di Commercio, 1824. Milano - Dalla Tipografia di Commercio, 1824 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Poems from two of Italy's great Renaissance poets. No poet was more influential on music history in the late Renaissance and Baroque eras than Guarini. While Guarini's work may be seen as lacking the deep feeling and sentiment of Torquato Tasso, his rival at the Estensi court, it was precisely this quality which commended it to musical setting at a time when excessive emotionalism had become unfashionable. Tasso's Aminta is a pastoral drama of very simple plot, but of exquisite lyrical charm. It appeared at the moment when music, under Palestrina's impulse, was becoming the main art of Italy. The honeyed melodies and sensuous melancholy of Aminta exactly suited and interpreted the spirit of its age. Its influence, in opera and cantata, was felt through two successive centuries. Binders label of R Carswell and Son, Belfast to front pastedown. Condition: In a half calf binding. Externally sound, with just slight wear to the leather. Internally, firmly bound. Bright with scattered spotting throughout, and just a few small tidemarks. Overall: VERY GOOD..
