The large and fine library formed by Paignon-Dijonval (1708-92), was inherited by his grandson, Morel-Vindé, who made important additions to it. Morel-Vindé (1759-1842), the author of the Déclaration des Droits de l'Homme et du Citoyen (1790), was active as an agronomist. He served as a member of Parlement and became Pair de France in 1815; Louis XVIII created him baron and vicomte. This library of 3216 lots contained books and manuscripts of the highest quality. The most expensive item of the sale was lot 71, a 15th-century Breviary from the La Vallière sale with 41 miniatures, some in grisaille (1600 francs to Crozet). The library was quite rich in the sciences, including, quite predictably, agriculture. Fine copy. Pages 455-85 contain an extremely useful author index and, even better, an index of anonymous works. ? Gustave Brunet, Dictionnaire de Bibliologie Catholique, col. 498-"Collection fort importante." N.B.G., Vol. 36, cols. 528-29.

        German Popular Stories

      C. Baldwyn and James Robins and Co: London, 1823. 2 vols 8vo. The first English edition of both volumes of Grimm's famous collection of fairy tales, representing an important literary landmark and also featuring some of the best work of the most famous illustrator of the nineteenth century, George Cruikshank. Volume one is the correct first issue, with no umlaut above "Marchen". The books are bound in recent straight grain black morocco, with gilt lettering and tooling, marbled endpapers, al edges gilt. Very slight foxing and toning here and there with humb marks to some leaves, the illustrated pages have suffered more from browning and foxing in volume one, a couple of neat professional repairs, slight offsetting to plate facing pages in Vol. II. Volume one is lacking the half title, half title present in volume II. A smart, attractive set of a work that forms the very foundation of everything we know and expect from a folk tale; includes the usual suspects in their earliest collected forms: Hansel and Grethel, The Frog Prince, Rumplestiltskin, Little Red Riding Hood and Rapunzel. Ruskin said of this edition: "If you ever happen to meet with the two volumes of "Grimm's German Stories" which were illustrated by him long ago, pounce on them instantly; the etchings in them are the finest things, next to Rembrandt's, that, as far as I know, have been done since etching was invented." .

        Slaves. WITH: Slave Population

1823 - (SLAVERY) (PARLIAMENT). Slaves. Papers Presented Pursuant to Address; viz. Acts of Colonial Legislatures for Registry of Slaves. Ordered, by the House of Commons, to be Printed, 27 February 1823. WITH: Slave Population. Papers and Returns, Presented Pursuant to Address, Relating to the Slave Population of Dominca, Grenada, St. Vincent, Barbadoes, Antigua, Tobago, Demerara, Berbice, St. Christopher, Trinidad, and Mauritius. Ordered, by the House of Commons, to be Printed, 4 March 1823. (London): House of Commons, 1823. Two volumes. Folio, period-style three-quarter dark blue morocco, marbled boards and endpapers, uncut. $5500.Rare 1823 Parliamentary acts and colonial reports on slavery in the British colonies of the Caribbean, two exceptional volumes of laws and papers, printed by order of the House of Commons in February and in March 1823, providing precise documentation on the taxation, commerce and legal governance of slavery, and an implicit, sometimes chilling record of its human misery."In the century and a half of the slave trade". between three and four million Africans were transported out of their homelands to the New World in British ships". it was the single largest abduction in human history." By the early 1800s, "the British Empire was, overwhelmingly, an empire of soldiers and". nearly a million Caribbean slaves" (Schama II:416, 405). Following passage of the 1807 Act for the Abolition of the British Slave Trade, most British colonies in the Caribbean established registries to monitor legally held slaves. Subsequently, abolitionists such as William Wilberforce argued in Parliament for "a bill relative to the registry and regulation of slaves," hoping to expose the planters' continuing inhumane treatment, but opposition denounced this "interference with the local legislation of the colonies" (Annual Register, 1816). After long debate, the 1819 Slave Registration Act was passed, requiring a central record of any commercial transaction or transport between islands involving slaves to be sent to the London registry. Subsequently the Colonial Secretary issued additional instructions to its governors, whose effect is seen in these two rare volumes, ordered by the House of Commons in February and March of 1823. Volume I contains "copies of all ACTS of the Colonial Legislatures, and, also, of all Orders, Proclamations, or other Regulations, for establishing the Registration of Slaves in His Majesty's Foreign Settlements," along with certain laws enacted by the Dutch (A2), including laws passed in the Bahamas, Barbados and other colonies from 1816-23. Volume II contains reports on "the number of Slaves imported under licenses, or otherwise, since the 1st of January 1808". together with the places from which they were brought" (A2), as submitted to Downing Street from Grenada, Barbados, Antigua, Trinidad and elsewhere. Included are "Papers and Returns" on the taxation and legal sale of slaves, their births, baptisms, marriages and burials, and a record of free slaves and runaways. Also noted are executions, such as that of one slave "for the murder of his mistress" and the sale of another to pay for expenses at the inquest (C3). Similar reporting continued until the abolishment of slavery in 1834. OCLC lists no copies. See Harvard Law Catalog, 300. Light dampstaining and small closed tears to gutter of title pages and some leaves, without affecting text. A very nearly fine collection central to the history of slavery, in two handsomely bound volumes. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Nine photographs of Egypt. Egypt, [1880s].

1823. 9 albumen prints (approx. 340 x 260 mm), each mounted on backing cardboard (ca. 400 x 330 mm). Three edges gilt. A fine set of nine albumen images of Egyptian sights and views, including Karnak, ships on the Nile, the Aswan cataract, the Temple of Edfu, murals at the Sanctuary at Karnak, camel drivers on the Sinai, etc. Pascal Sébah (1823-86), a leading photographer of the Middle East, was renowned for his well-judged compositions and for the excellent print quality achieved by his technician A. Laroche. His studio, founded in 1857, was continued under his brother Cosimi and his son Jean. A single image in this series is not by Sebah: a view of the island of Philae (near the First Cataract of the Nile) is signed "A. Beato" in a shaded portion of the image, identifiying this as the work of Antonio (Antoine) Beato (after 1832-1906), a British and Italian photographer noted for his genre works, portraits, views of the architecture and landscapes of Egypt and the other locations in the Mediterranean region. - Slight fading; well preserved.

London, 1823. Three volumes. vii,[1],344; vii,[1],356; vii,[1],347pp. plus eight plates (two colored), folding profile, and map. Half title in second and third volumes. Contemporary tree calf, spines gilt, leather labels. Ownership attribution to the Kelso Library in manuscript at head of each titlepage. Minor expert reinforcement to verso of folding map. Internally clean. Very good. In a half morocco box. The first British edition of Long, issued the same year as the American, with a few paragraphs of text not in the latter, and with a different set of plates than in the American edition. The map in this edition combines the eastern and western sections of that of the American edition, but is otherwise identical. It locates many of the rivers on the Great Plains, but badly muddles some headwaters. With Pike and Lewis and Clark, one of the three basic western exploring expeditions of the early period. The British edition is a more handsome example of book production than the American. WAGNER-CAMP 25:2. FIELD 948. ABBEY 650. HOWES J41, "b." STREETER SALE 1784. WHEAT TRANSMISSISSIPPI 353.

The uterus and its adnexa in their normal and diseased states are treated in detail with many illustrative case histories". - - - GUILBERT J.-N.         Scottish Cryptogamic Flora, or Coloured Figures and Descriptions of Cryptogamic Plants belonging chiefly to the Order Fungi; and Intended to Serve as a Continuation of English Botany

Edinburgh and London: Maclachlan & Stewart; Bladwin, Cradock & Joy, 1823 A very good copy in 6 volumes dating from 1823-1828, with 360 hand coloured plates. Robert Kaye Greville, 1794-1866, had medical training but an assured income allowed him to choose a more diverse life in science and art, and in his public work - where he became a leading voice against slavery. He published his Scottish Cryptogamic Flora in monthly parts, intending it to complete the catalogue of flora in Smith and Sowerby's English Botany. He drew all the specimens himself and these drawings together with the detailed text, form a comprehensive picture of the scottish cryptogamic flora as it was in the early nineteenth century. This copy is in contemporary marbled boards with cloth spines that have been rebacked and had new title labels. The binding is possibly a publisher's one. The boards have general wear but the bindings are sound. New endpapers have been added. Each volume has a half title and title page, text (numbered on recto only) and 60 plates, and index. Vol I has a dedication and advertisement; Vol IV has an index to the first 4 volumes; and Vol VI has a synopsis and full index (82pp) at the end of the volume. Vol VI is notable for the gold leaf used on the 37th plate. There is a bill of sale from Wheldon and Wesley dated 1986 loose in Vol VI. The contents are in very good clean condition with beautifully coloured plates. There are no tissue-guards so there is offsetting from strongly coloured images to the text and slight offsetting of text to a few plates in Vol II. Occasional slgiht darkening to top margin in Vol IV.
