- THE FIRST FRENCH SCIENTIFIC BOOK ON SOMNAMBULISM (a fine copy) - . Références : Crabtree A: Animal magnetism, early hypnotism and psychical research, p. 313 : "one of the most thorough works on somnambulism written to that date."; Wallace ER & Gach J: History of Psychiatry and Medical Psychology, p. 563 :"[this book] provided the first detailed and systematic treatment of magnetic somnambulism." ; Ellenberger HF: The discovery of the unconscious, p. 76 : "Alexandre Bertrand who had a dual training as a physician and as a engineer, approached the phenomena of animal magnetism with a view toward exploring them in a scientific and experimental manner. Janet who held Bertrands work in the highest esteem, considered him to be the true initiator of the scientific study of hypnosis."; Barrucand D : Histoire de l'hypnose en France, 40 ; Gauld A: A history of hypnotism, 132-133, 277-279 : "His writings exhibit qualities which should still commend him to modern readers. He gives a fairly full account of the 'epidemics of ecstasy'. Bertrand emerges as an early proponent of a 'special state' theory of the magnetic somnambulism. In certain respects - his presenting magnetic somnambulism as an abnormal state with links to hystero-epilepsy - he is more nearly a forerunner of the school of the Salpêtrière."; Dorbon : Bibliotheca Esoterica, 308 ; Goblot JJ : Extase, hystérie, possession: les théories d'Alexandre Bertrand, Romantisme, 1979, 9, 53-59. © S.A.S.         Potsdam Sanssouci - Hofgärtnervilla bzw. Gärtnervilla und Gehilfenhaus in den Römischen Bädern, Westansicht, 1856. Original-Photographie. Vintage. Salzpapier-Abzug. Verlagsseitig montiert. Köln, verlegt durch F.C. Eisen, 1856.

Mario Vallauri in KLL I, 1965, S. 1573). First edition. – In 1818, the year of foundation of the university of Bonn, August Wilhelm von Schlegel had assumed at this academy the first German chair for Indology. The first important publication due to this teaching activity was the edition of the complete Sanskrit text of the Bhagavadgita, for the typesetting Schlegel had ordered the Devanagari types in Paris at his own expense. – Slightly browned, a little brown-stained. – Scientifically and historically important publication for Indology and typographically exceptional testimony as well as famous work for world literature in a copy of distinguished provenance: from the estate of the orientalist Julius Mohl (1800-1876) who was naturalized in France as Jules Mohl and who achieved an excellent reputation as teacher of Persian; after his death Mohl’s library was auctioned, in the printed catalogue the present Bhagavadgita is listed with no. 1204 (Catalogue de la bibliothèque de feu M J.         Manuscript Travel Journal of a "A Tour on the Continent" , Features a Visit to the Site of the Battle of Waterloo

Netherlands, France, Belgium, circa 1823., 1823. Manuscript fair copy travel journal of a "A Tour on the Continent" lasting one month from 13 September 1821 to 11 October 1821, which features a visit to the site of the Battle of Waterloo, made by J.D. and W.C., the latter being William Chapman, an ancestral relation of British historian and economist Guy Patterson Chapman, possibly his paternal grandfather. Evidently with the original travel journal or paper notes in hand, this volume was written in 1823, or shortly thereafter, as the leafs are watermarked with that year, and features the bookplate of William Chapman to front pastedown, presumably the author. 8vo. 134 pages in manuscript, in a fine hand, with a later manuscript dedication to front leaf dated July 1892. Paginated in manuscript by the writer to upper margins. Half green roan over brown paper boards. Some wear to boards, otherwise in very good condition, a pleasing volume. The highlight of the journal is a contemplative walkabout on the field of Waterloo only six years after the great battle that defeated Napoleon's army, with nine pages of the journal describing his observations at the site, including remnants of war, and reflections on the critical manoeuvres and assaults. Also fascinating is Chapman's firsthand description of The Promenades Aeriennes or Aerial Strolls - the first modern rollercoaster - which was powered by horses and operated for seven years from 1817 to 1824 in Parc Beaujon, an amusement park on the Champs Elysees in Paris. A pleasing and detailed visual image of the old-time charm of notable continental cities, splendid tree-lined vistas and promenades which have since been commercially overtaken, ancient architecture and nineteenth century homes, citizens of three unique countries and their customs!. Manuscript.

Printed land grant, completed in manuscript, to John Smith

Sydney, 1823. In excellent condition.. Large printed vellum leaf, completed in manuscript, approx. 290 x 257 mm., verso blank except for ms. docket title; original folds, with well-preserved ribbon and paper seal attached. Fine original land grant signed by the sixth governor, for 200 acres in Methven, Van Diemen's Land, free of "all Taxes, Quit Rents, Services, and Acknowledgements whatsoever" for five years, thereafter a quit rent of four shillings per annum. Methven was a Tasmanian district name long since abandoned; it refers to the Oatlands area in central Tasmania.Sir Thomas Brisbane (1773-1860) succeeded Macquarie as governor of New South Wales, and held office from 1821 to 1825. Much of his work as governor was to reform the system of land grants which had mushroomed under Macquarie leaving confusion and boundary disputes prevailing among grantees. Brisbane instituted proper surveys and reformed the whole system of grants, ensuring that only those who were both willing to improve the land and had the capital to do so were successful in obtaining grants. This grant was witnessed by William Elyard junior, then second clerk in the colonial secretary's office, and Robert Crawford, principal clerk. Crawford was the builder of Clyde Bank in 1824: situated in the Rocks, Sydney, it was designed by Francis Greenway and is the oldest remaining house in the city of Sydney. The document was further signed by Brisbane's nemesis, Frederick Goulburn, as registrar. Goulburn was the first official colonial secretary to be appointed and took an active role in the issuing of land grants. His handling of grants was one of the major causes of the acrimony between himself and the governor, the cause of the collapse of Brisbane's administration and the governor's recall.

Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea, in the Years 1819, 20, 21, and 22. With an Appendix on Various Subjects Relating to Science and Natural History

John Murray, London 1823 - xvi+768+[6 index] pages with 31 plates of which 11 are in color (9 in aquatint) and with four plates of plants (1 in color) preceding four large folding maps all dated March 1823, with an appendix which Sabin calls "valuable" in its contribution to the knowledge of the natural history of the area and errata slip tipped in. Quarto (10 3/4" x 8 1/2") bound in original contemporary tree calf with spine in gilt lettering. The plates were engraved by Finden, from drawings by Lieutenants Hood and Back. (Hill 635. Abbey Travel 635; Arctic Bibliography 5194; Books on Ice 3.1; Lande 1181) First edition first issue with the errata slip mounted to page 768. This expedition also known as the Coppermine Expedition of 1819–1822 had as its goal the exploration of the northern coast of Canada, which was accessed by way of the Coppermine River. The British expedition was organized by the Royal Navy as part of its attempt to discover and map the Northwest Passage. It was the first of three Arctic expeditions to be led by John Franklin, and also included George Back and John Richardson, both of whom would become significant Arctic explorers in their own right. The expedition was plagued by poor planning, bad luck and unreliable allies. The expected assistance from the local fur trading companies and native peoples was less forthcoming than expected, and the dysfunctional supply line, coupled with unusually harsh weather and the resulting absence of game, meant that the explorers were never far from starvation. Eventually the Arctic coast was reached, but barely 500 miles had been explored before the exhaustion of the party's supplies and the onset of winter forced them to turn back. The expedition made a desperate retreat across uncharted territory in a state of starvation, often with nothing more than lichen to eat. Eleven of the twenty strong party died amid accusations of murder and cannibalism before the survivors were rescued by native people of the Yellowknife tribe. In the aftermath of the expedition, John Franklin was much criticized by local fur traders for his haphazard planning and failure to adapt to the circumstances he faced, but in Britain he was received as a hero, fêted for the courage he had shown in extreme adversity. The expedition captured the public imagination, and in reference to a desperate measure he took while starving, he became known as "the man who ate his boots". Condition: Second contents leaf bound at end of preliminaries; lacks the half-title, rebacked, spine scuffed, rear board splitting along fore edge, end-papers renewed; infrequent minor foxing, occasional light offsetting from plates else about a very good copy.         Thoughts and details on the high and low prices of the last thirty years. Part I. On the alterations in the currency. [Part II. On the effect of war. Part III. On the effect of the seasons. Part IV. A table of the prices of various commodities from 1782 to 1822, with statements of quantities; preceded by some general remarks].

London:: John Murray, 1823., 1823. 4 parts in 2 volumes. 8vo. viii, 220; viii, 61, [1], 185, [1], 85, [1], [2 blank], 77, [1] pp. Large folding table (vol. I). Original blue cloth-backed red pebbled paper overs boards, printed paper spine label applied to spine of second volume; corners showing, joints cracked, reinforced with kozo. Good. Complete sets are rare. First edition of what the Quarterly Review [vol. 29, (Apr. & July, 1823), p. 214], called "a very valuable contribution to the science of political economy." The author made a systematic study of prices of various commodities and making judgements on the science of economics. "Thomas Tooke is the founder of the contra-quantity theory of money - the view that monetary policy is powerless to influence prices because the supply of money depends on the flow of money expenditure and hence is the result and not the cause of price changes." [p. 250] - Blaug. "The work of 1823, Thoughts and details on the high and low prices of the last thirty years, provided the basis for Tooke's monetary thought until and including the publication in 1838 of the first two volumes of his massive treatise The History of Prices. In this treatise, Tooke aimed to continue what he saw as his main challenge, the detailed collection and interpretation of price trends. While the 1823 work covered the years 1793-1822, the 1838 volumes extended the coverage through 1837." [page 58] "The data to be used appeared in the appendix to Tooke's 1823 book ... This book analyses the years 1793-1822, but the appendix, compiled by Tooke's assistant A. Hinrichs, provides details on prices for 41 years, from 1782 to 1822. Prices are quoted for 41 commodities. The number of price quotations differs for each year. If the price of a commodity did not change in a particular year, Tooke quoted a single price. It the price of a commodity showed a certain trend (upward or downward) during the year and the two extreme prices were a and b, Tooke informed us of (a, b) for that commodity, i.e., one cannot tell whether the price rose or fell. If a commodity showed one maximum (or minimum) and two trends through the year (upward to downward or vice versa) Tooke quoted (a, b, c). Thus the number of price quotations for each commodity is not constant, but ranges from one to ten, if there were nine different successive trends for a particular commodity in a certain year, as, for example, in the case of coffee in 1819. In addition, Tooke sometimes reports separate data series according to the quality (high or low) or origin (e.g., Russia or Sweden) of the commodity. The first step of the present analysis was to compute an average price for each commodity for each year over the various quotations and series provided." [p. 150] - Arie Arnon, Thomas Tooke: Pioneer of Monetary Theory, (1991). "The debate in Britain over the steep decline in prices that accompanied a general depression in economic activity in the period after the French Wars largely motivated Tooke to write his first book on political economy, Thoughts and details on the high and low prices of the last thirty years, published in 1823. The book was well received, confirming Tooke's rowing reputation as a political economist 'remarkable for his range of knowledge and sound judgement' (Higgs 1921: xiii)." [p. 17] - Matthew Smith, Thomas Tooke and the Monetary Thought of Classical Economics, (2011). Einaudi 5659; Goldsmiths 23825; Kress C.1163.
