      Paris: C.L.F. Panckcoucke, 1823. A DRAMATIC AND STUNNING VIEW BY AMBROISE-LOUIS GARNERAY Hand-colored aquatint engraving Sheet size: 17" x 23 3/4" 1823-34. The marine artist Ambroise-Louis Garneray was born in February, 1783. He received his first lessons in painting and drawing from his father, Jean-Francois, who was a pupil of David. The younger Garneray went to sea at the age of thirteen, and for nearly eighteen years served on battle ships, slavers, whaling vessels and on expeditions to the Caribbean and throughout the Pacific Ocean. Garneray finally returned to Paris in 1814 after spending eight years in England, where he had been detained after being captured at sea. He established himself as a marine painter upon his arrival, and studied engraving under Philibert Louis Debucourt. In 1815 he was admitted to the Salon, and exhibited his first painting, View of the Port of London, in the following year. He continued to exhibit, winning a gold medal in 1819, and later earned the patronage of Louis XVIII, who commissioned him to paint several scenes of naval battles. In 1833, Garneray was appointed director of the Rouen Museum, a post he resigned in 1837 to work on designs for the Sevres porcelain factory. While Garneray's engravings of naval and whaling scenes were extremely popular, even in America, his greatest achievement was a series of views of the principal ports of France, Europe and the United States, supplemented by the elegant prose descriptions of M.E. Jouy, and published in Paris between 1823 and 1834. Vues des cores de France..., published in five volumes, is widely acclaimed as "a magnificent collection of views'' (Deak, vol. I, p. 291). The sparkling, handcolored aquatint engravings show the principal ports of France, including Marseille, Bordeaux, Toulon, Cannes and La Rochelle. Volume five contains forty views of foreign ports, including Constantinople, Gibraltar, Barcelona, Liverpool, Naples, New Orleans, Philadelphia, New York and Baltimore. Each print exhibits endless attention to detail, incorporating architectural landmarks, ships, weather conditions, animals, and costumed figures in the midst of daily activities. Garneray makes superb use of the aquatint medium, which enables subtle variations in tone and reproduces the look and feel of watercolor more successfully than any other method of engraving. Several of Garneray's original watercolors of naval battles can be found in the collection of the New York Historical Society.. Book.

        An Essay on the History and Theory of Music and on the qualities, capabilities, and management of the human voice

(of which 40 ff. are wholly engraved), wholly uncut, a few marginal tears, mainly in the prelims, original. boards, rebacked with spine-label carefully following the original (too damaged to preserve). Sendrey, Bibliography of Jewish music 2061. First edition (he started to publish a second edition, as Musurgia Vocalis, in parts in 1836, but it was never completed). Isaac Nathan (Canterbury 1790 - Australia 1864) is an important link between Jewish music and that of the mainstream European tradition. He is most remembered in England for his collaboration with Byron in Hebrew Melodies: he provided the music for which Byron wrote lyrics, including such well-known poems as "She walks in beauty like the night"; that book also includes "On Jordan's banks the Arab camels stray...", written to the tune of the Maoz Tsur (its first printing?). Even though his introduction to Byron had been as piano tutor to Lady Caroline Lamb the friendship continued, to the extent that on the night Byron had to leave England Nathan sent him a packet of Matzos. This interest in Jewish music (perhaps thought to have more continuity than it has with the temple music before 70 A.D.) was also to be found in, e.g., Schubert and Beethoven (Beethoven inserted the Kol Nidrei melody into the adagio of his string quartet, opus 131). This Essay of 1823 (in which the practical advice on singing bulks much larger than the history) is incidentally pioneering on Jewish chant too: he was the first to give a notation for the ta'amei hamiqra of the Western Ashkenazi tradition. In 1841 he emigrated to Australia, and is called "father of Australian music". Certainly the first Australian opera was his, with the curious title "Merry Freaks in Troublous Times" (1844). But his talent for notating the unfamiliar took a new turn. "The Southern Euphrosyne" (1848), which begins with a lament for the People of Israel, also promises "examples of the native Aboriginal melodies,put into modern rhythm, and harmonized as solos, quartettes, etc."This book has a very curious makeup. Up to p.134 there is much engraved music in the text, with the vocal parts in letterpress, but with 2 leaves inserted wholly engraved; from p.135 to 210 the book is wholly engraved, including even some parts of Nathan's text; it then reverts to letterpress. The collation is not uncertain, however, since the pagination is continuous. Very scarce in commerce: one auction record since 1975, no other copy currently on the market.

        MECHANICS' MAGAZINE, [Museum, Register, Journal and Gazette] Volume 1 (-Volume 68) [edited by Joseph Clinton Robertson]

      London : Knight & Lacey 1823-28, then Mechanics' Magazine Office... 1829-58 . 68 (of 69) vols. 8vo, title-page in vol.10 and indexes in vols. 10, 28 & 49 supplied in photocpy, vols 1-32 uncut in original boards, paper spines, the rest in either half calf, marbled boards, or full green cloth ( photograph available). About 17-20 of the bindings need some repairs such as boards re-attached to the early volumes and a few calf bindings re-backed. This run lacks only the 69th volume for a complete set of the First Series. Apart from perhaps a set (unobtainable!) of 'Patent Specifications' the Mechanics Magazine is surely the richest single source for material on 19th century mechanics. A random sample of subjects from one volume include, railways, steam carriages, pile-driving, printing machinery, hydraulic bookbinder's press, Thames bridges, Russian paper-making, steam ships and an improved bee-hive. It was founded, and edited till 1851, by Joseph Clinton Robertson (1788-1852), a patent agent in Fleet Street. In 1859 with the beginning of the 'New Series' it changed both format (to 4to) and title to The Mechanics Magazine, and Journal of Engineering, Agricultural Machinery, Manufactures, and Shipbuilding, thus reflecting a change of direction from the 'amateur' mechanics of the early 19th century to the heavy engineering of the industrial revolution at its peak. It continued in this form until 1873 when it merged with Iron, a journal of the iron industry. It is this first series however which is by far the most interesting and important. In their editorial to volume 1 of the New Series, the editors, R.A. Brooman and E.J. Reed, say of the first issue - " .....it proved to be the beginning of a publication which has unquestionably exerted great influences upon modern science - has formed the model for scientific journalists throughout the world.... Nor was that first number the precursor of great literary influences alone. For in its pages Mr Robertson, its founder and editor, took the lead in the establishment of the London Mechanics' Institution and virtually of all those kindred institutions which now abound in the land."

      Paris:. 1823.. Scarce & early map of Van Diemen's Land, now Tasmania. The French edition of this scarce map, also published in a notoriously scarce English edition in 1822. Evans was the surveyor general at the time, and his map is considered the finest of the early post-settlement maps of Van Diemen's Land and the first survey map of the island. Besides the coast, the only inland detail is along the route from Hobart to Launceston, including the outline of land grants. Copper engraved, 45.5 x 57.5 cm plus margins, original folds, some offsetting. Printed on laid paper, watermarked B (heart symbol) R. The lower margin has a damp mark & a small chip, both outside the impression mark.A very nice copy of an extremely scarce map.

        The Beauties of Cambria Consisting of Sixty Views in North and South Wales

      London Chester and Caermarthen, 1823 Each view accompanied by a page of letter-press. Bound in tan half leather, corners and edges a little bumped and worn. Spine has been replaced, raised bands, blind tooling, title in gilt to maroon leather label. Internally, NO inscriptions, ffep has crease, old ink? mark to base of TP also strip along leading edge removed, small tear to dedication sheet base, 3 interesting pages of subscribers, list of plates, followed by the 60 leaves of views each accompanied with a leaf of descriptive text, one plate has a pencil sketch tipped in prior to it, some very minor foxing and browning not affecting text or plates, as is normal with this production. Hughes, (pseud Cristion) painter and engraved, worked on producing this volume between 1819 and 1822, published by subscription it went on to become his best known work.         The Beauties of Cambria

      London, 1823 Consisting of Sixty Views in North and South Wales; Each accompanied by a page of letter-press. In contemporary half leather with marbled boards, worn a little, corners and edges a little worn and bumped, title and tooling in gilt to black leather label, gilt tooling to leather edges. Spine has been relaid, keeping most of the old, lots of gilt tooling, edges have a little leather loss and are worn. Internally there is a small bookseller label and a bookplate to fep, title page has an ink name & inscription to head, dedication sheet, 3 pp list of subscribers, contents page followed by the B&W plates, light foxing to plate edges, 1 plate has red ink mark to extreme edge of margin, not paginated. Hughes, painter and engraver, was born at Pwll-y-gwichiad, near Llandudno. He was the son of Thomas Hughes and his wife, Jane Williams, and was baptized at Llandudno on 20 February 1790. His earliest known example of his work is a portrait (dated 1812) of the Revd John Evans (1723&ndash;1817) of Bala, Merioneth, which was engraved in the Drysorfa (vol. 3). Between 1819 and 1822 he worked at Meddiant Farm on a volume of wood-engravings entitled Beauties of Cambria (1823) which was published by subscription and which became his best-known work. All the views were engraved by himself, fifty-eight from his own drawings. His engraving style has been compared to that of Thomas Bewick. His treatment of natural objects was realistic, minute, and laborious, and his foliage always graceful. Four of these &lsquo;singularly beautiful wood engravings&rsquo; are reproduced in Chatto (Chatto, 538&ndash;40). See ODNB for a full Bio.

Originally published in folio in 1803 and again in 1819, this is the first quarto edition of English naval surgeon Francis Spilsbury&#146;s account of his travels in the Holy Land and Syria during the Napoleonic campaigns of 1799 and 1800. This stunning work is exquisitely illustrated with 19 hand-colored aquatint views (including frontispiece.) Heavy rubbing along edges of binding. Spine partly missing. Previous owner's name in ink on free front endpaper, and dated 1825. Binding in overall poor to fair, interior in very good condition.

      London Jas. Wyld, May 1, 1823.. Map dimensions 54.5 x 77.5 cm, overall dimensions 56 x 79.5 cm. Folding map of of the Iberian peninsula and the Balearic Islands. Original colour in outline marking out the coastlines plus country and state boundaries. Dissected into 20 sections an mounted on linen, original drab paper to one of the folded end sections and publisher's advertisement to the other, original marbled paper slipcase with publisher's label to upper board, the advert and the label both bearing the same contemporary ownership inscription. Slight wear to the edges of the case, they and the map in excellent condition.

Internally, original green endpapers, faint remains of removed bookplate, some very minimal foxing, no inscriptions etc, title page with vignette, thumb print colophon present which states its a Royal copy at £1 4s -d, with the red fern superimposed, and No 34, (xxiv), 376 pp, 188 fables, 188, headpieces to fables, 135 tailpieces, printed in Newcastle by Edward Walker, an edition of 150 copies. A lovely copy clean and tight. (Roscoe 46A. & see BewickSociety.org)Bewick, wood-engraver, who in 1811 began on his last book, his Fables of Aesop and Others (1818, 2nd edn 1823). He planned the enterprise during convalescence from illness, writing some fables of his own and reworking or taking unacknowledged contributions from others. The engravings were designed on the wood by Bewick with his drawing finished in the greatest detail; the cutting was done by apprentices under his close supervision and where necessary later refined by their master. A lovely copy of a very desirable and scarce title, the first edition was published in 1797 with few plates, this edition was published c1816. Woodward, caricaturist and author, Of whose books, the first and most celebrated was Eccentric Excursions, published in 1796 with 100 plates engraved by Isaac Cruikshank after his designs. Woodward&#39;s text describes an idiosyncratic ramble round the country and reveals an engaging personality. At least seven other books followed, all broadly humorous and without literary distinction, of which An Olio of Good Breeding (1801) is perhaps the best. See ODNB for a full Bio.

Unidentified illuminated coat-of-arms on the leaf following the preliminaries. 12 pp., 1 leaf, [38] pp. 8vo, a fine contemporary signed retrospective mosaic binding by P. Niedrée of red morocco, covers gold-tooled & inlaid with black morocco to a 16th-century strapwork design, spine similarly decorated in compartments and finely lettered, citron morocco doublures gold-tooled to an 18th-century dentelle design, gilt edges, uncut. Paris: Firmin Didot for J. Ch. Motteley, 1823. The unique copy printed throughout on vellum; the great collector of Elzeviers, J. Charles Motteley (1778-1850), sponsored this luxurious reprint of the extremely rare 1681 auction catalogue of the books printed at the Elzeviers&#39; Amsterdam house. A total of 101 copies of this reprint, beautifully printed by Firmin Didot, were privately issued (this copy on vellum, 20 copies on large paper, and 80 copies on Holland paper). This was Motteley&#39;s own copy and appears in his famous sale of books from the Elzevier press (Paris, 2 December 1824 and following days, lot 2069, 140 francs). At the time of the sale, this copy was simply bound ("plié"); the purchaser had it elaborately bound in the present binding and inserted the leaf with the unidentified illuminated coat-of-arms. The present binding by Niedrée, Thouvenin&#39;s successor, is a masterpiece of finishing, the exterior Renaissance style and the dentelles in the style of the 18th century. Motteley lived as a hermit, alone and isolated in a rundown apartment. He was afraid to make home repairs because of his fear of disturbing the treasures on which he had spent so much money. Very fine copy preserved in a red morocco pull-off case. Occasional browning at edges of leaves. With additional vellum endpapers. .

Wilfrid Blunt, The Art of Botanical Illustration (London, 1950), p. 212. Smith executed these beautifully detailed watercolors to serve as originals for the engravings included in Robert Sweet?s The Florist?s Guide, a lavishly illustrated and important contribution to the array of splendid color-plate books devoted to the subject of botany in 19th-century England.  As long ago as 1950, Wilfrid Blunt, the outstanding authority on British botanical painting, recognized the quality of these watercolors, singling them out for outstanding praise in the above quotation.    Smith, for many years attached to the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, was one of the finest botanical artists of the time.  Accomplished in both botanical and portrait painting, Smith specialized in miniatures, a fact that accounts for the intricate detail of these watercolors.  He was taught by his father, Anker Smith (1759-1819), who was himself a noted engraver and miniaturist.  Smith lived in Chelsea (London), exhibiting much of his work from 1816-47.  He exhibited at least 66 works at the Royal Academy and an additional 13 at the Suffolk Street Galleries.  Smith?s skill in small-scale work is clearly evidenced by the exquisite detail of these superb watercolors.  Flamboyant tulips appear to rise off the page, their petals unfolding and spilling into the viewer?s space.  Marigolds, carnations, auriculas, and dahlias are all endowed with a distinct visual character, some with delicate veins traced along their translucent petals, others fully opaque and vivid.  Robert Sweet, Smith?s collaborator, was an enterprising horticulturist.  He was born at Cockington in Devon but soon moved to the London area, becoming a nurseryman successively at Stockwell (1810-1815), Fulham (1815-1819) and Chelsea (1819-182).  As a horticulturist rather than a scientific botanist or botanical artist, he devoted himself to new species with an eye to their suitability for growing in British gardens and hot-houses; he was more interested in the cultivation than the classification of exotic plants.  Most of the plants that he included in his publications were provided by nurserymen colleagues.
