Smith executed these beautifully detailed watercolors to serve as originals for the engravings included in Robert Sweet?s The Florist?s Guide, a lavishly illustrated and important contribution to the array of splendid color-plate books devoted to the subject of botany in 19th-century England.  As long ago as 1950, Wilfrid Blunt, the outstanding authority on British botanical painting, recognized the quality of these watercolors, singling them out for outstanding praise in the above quotation.    Smith, for many years attached to the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, was one of the finest botanical artists of the time.  Accomplished in both botanical and portrait painting, Smith specialized in miniatures, a fact that accounts for the intricate detail of these watercolors.  He was taught by his father, Anker Smith (1759-1819), who was himself a noted engraver and miniaturist.  Smith lived in Chelsea (London), exhibiting much of his work from 1816-47.  He exhibited at least 66 works at the Royal Academy and an additional 13 at the Suffolk Street Galleries.  Smith?s skill in small-scale work is clearly evidenced by the exquisite detail of these superb watercolors.  Flamboyant tulips appear to rise off the page, their petals unfolding and spilling into the viewer?s space.  Marigolds, carnations, auriculas, and dahlias are all endowed with a distinct visual character, some with delicate veins traced along their translucent petals, others fully opaque and vivid.  Robert Sweet, Smith?s collaborator, was an enterprising horticulturist.  He was born at Cockington in Devon but soon moved to the London area, becoming a nurseryman successively at Stockwell (1810-1815), Fulham (1815-1819) and Chelsea (1819-182).  As a horticulturist rather than a scientific botanist or botanical artist, he devoted himself to new species with an eye to their suitability for growing in British gardens and hot-houses; he was more interested in the cultivation than the classification of exotic plants.  Most of the plants that he included in his publications were provided by nurserymen colleagues.

        The World on Mercator's Projection

A World map by one of America's first great cartographers The objective of depicting a three dimensional sphere on a two dimensional sheet of paper has challenged mapmakers since Classical times. Mercator's solution was to straighten all of the longitudinal meridians, making them perpendicular to the lines of latitude. The consequence of this projection was that while lands close to the Equator assumed a relatively realistic form, lands closer to the poles attained a progressively attenuated and exaggeratedly large appearance. The map reflects the great improvements in geographical understanding in the wake of the epic sea voyages of the late eighteenth-century, most notably those by Cook, La Perouse and Vancouver.

This set was praised by Sir Walter Scott as a collection which at once satisfies the imagination and the understanding, showing us how the most distinguished of our ancestors looked, moved and dressed, and how they thought, acted, lived, and died (Allibone, 1120). some of the portraits and biographies included are Lord Nelson, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Walter Raleigh, and Oliver Cromwell. Sir Edmund Lodge (1756-1839) was a long-serving English officer of arms, a writer on heraldic subjects, and a painstaking supplier of short, accurate biographies. He contributed the literary matter to Portraits of Illustrious Personages of Great Britain (1814, &c. ), an elaborate work of which a popular edition is included in Bohn's Illustrated Library. Complete in twelve volumes, bound in six. Binder's label of M. Ogle and Sons to front pastedown. Condition: In half-morocco bindings with marbled boards. Externally sound, if a trifle rubbed. The very rare first edition of the first French translation of the seminal main work by the co-founder of classical economics (together with Ricardo) and a main popularizer of utilitarianism James Mill. The work is considered the first textbook of Ricardian economics as well as the first popular exposition of the principles of classical economics. As such the work, and the important translations of it into the other main languages of Europe - French and German -, came to exercise a profound influence on later economis.The work originally appeared in English in 1821, and apart from the first edition, the present first French translation constitutes the most important edition of the work. "In Elements of Political Economy, James Mill describes his ideas (in the Schumpeterean sense) using economic thought and economic analysis. He uses examples of the Industrial Revolution (industry) and the agricultural industry surrounding England. The utilitarian economist, father of John Stewart Mill, discusses his theory of velocity of circulation of money, the interest from capital as the result of wages of labor (against Ricardian theory), and many other economic principles. James Mill historically writes "the aggregate of commodities, taken all together, there is neither fall nor rise" an issue later paraphrased by Karl Marx in his Das Kapital."       London: Rodwell and Martin, 1823. Lithographs, coloured by hand, by and after John Doyle, printed by Charles Hullmandel. 10 1/2 x 14 3/8 inches. 12 3/4 x 16 1/2 inches. Fine, carefully observed lithographic studies of the horses as well as their grooms and trainers. The present lithographs are from the very rare series entitled 'Life of the Race Horse' by John Doyle, and not listed in Mellon, Siltzer or Abbey. Charles Lane gives some details of the series but notes that it consists of eight plates, the present plate is numbered 9, and may, therefore, indicate that more than eight images were produced. John Doyle "was born in Ireland and after studying under portrait and miniature painters and at the Dublin Society Drawing Academy, he came to England in about 1822. At first a portrait painter, he later became a caricaturist of note signing such work 'H.B.' (two conjoined JDs). He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1825 and 1835 from London addresses. Doyle painted several sporting scenes. Those of horses have a powerful impact both in the subject and his ability to use light to great advantage. Most of all, the portraits of owners and trainers are particularly fine.' (Lane). Incidentally, Doyle was also the grandfather of the creator of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.         [JAMES MADISON'S RETAINED COPY, WRITTEN ALMOST COMPLETELY IN DOLLEY MADISON'S HAND, OF A LETTER TO PRESIDENT JAMES MONROE, REGARDING THE FINANCIAL CLAIMS OF JAMES LEANDER CATHCART FOR HIS SERVICES TO THE UNITED STATES, AND HIS BEING PASSED OVER FOR CERTAIN POSITIONS]

      [Montpelier, Va.]. Dec. 23, 1823.. [1]p. manuscript letter on a quarto sheet. Backed on tissue, repairing vertical and horizontal splits. Stain at upper edge. Very good. In a half morocco box. A nice letter from former President James Madison to current President James Monroe, regarding the dire financial situation of James Cathcart, who had long served in the diplomatic corps of the United States, as consul to Tripoli, and other posts in the Barbary states, Portugal, and Spain. Madison appeals to Monroe to see if government employment can be found for Cathcart, in order to alleviate the financial circumstances of his family. The letter is written almost entirely in Dolley Madison's hand, though there are three additional words and two instances of corrections that are written by James Madison himself. It is not uncommon to find Madison's file copies of his letters in the hand of Dolley Madison or of a secretary. This is especially the case as Madison grew older and his rheumatism worsened. This letter is known to the Papers of James Madison project at the University of Virginia, though it has not yet been published by them. The copy sent to Monroe, which is written entirely in Madison's hand, is in the Library of Congress. Madison writes President Monroe: "A most distressing picture has been presented to me of the condition of Mr. Cathcart & his numerous family in the hope that as his official services which have had such a termination were rendered whilst the administration was in my hands, I might be induced to say something in his behalf. It is impossible to learn his actual distress & alarming prospects without sympathy; but aware as I am that I can add nothing to your knowledge of his case & that your kind feelings receive from it every proper impulse, I fear that I risk impropriety, even in what I yield to the appeal made to mine. "He seems to think he had hard fare in being overlooked in several instances, where vacancies have been filled by competitors without some of his pretensions, & no wise in need of what he is craveing [sic] for a starving family. Regarding these jealousies as the offspring & evidence of his great distress they may be some apology for expressing a hope that some occasion compatible with the public interest & the just claims of others may ere long justify a rescue of the individual in question from the cloud which overwhelms him." James Leander Cathcart (1767-1843) began his adventures early, immigrating to America from Ireland as a child, and at the age of twelve joining the crew of an American privateer in the Revolutionary War. Captured by the British, Cathcart was held for three years on prison ships in Wallabout Bay before escaping and joining the merchant service. In 1785, Barbary pirates captured the schooner Maria, on which Cathcart was sailing, and took him and twenty others as slaves to Algiers, where Cathcart spent the next eleven years in bondage. During his captivity, however, Cathcart's good fortune, cleverness, and facility for language (he had learned Spanish and French from fellow prisoners in Wallabout Bay and quickly picked up Arabic and Turkish in Algiers) eventually brought him into relatively comfortable circumstances and positions of responsibility, including that of chief Christian secretary to the Dey and Regency of Algiers in 1792. In that capacity, Cathcart helped the United States envoy Joseph Donaldson negotiate with the Dey for peace and release of the American prisoners, which was finally secured in 1796. In 1796, on a ship he purchased with earnings from his various clerkships, Cathcart sailed to Philadelphia with the rest of the surviving crew of the Maria, dispatches of U.S. consul Joel Barlow, and a letter from the Dey to President Washington. The following year Cathcart was appointed consul at Tripoli, and in 1798 he was named special diplomatic agent to Tunis, where he traveled with William Eaton to negotiate with the new Pasha. It was at Cathcart's suggestion that Eaton espoused the cause of the exiled Pasha during the First Barbary War, leading to Eaton's famous adventure from Tripoli to Tunis. Cathcart continued to receive consular appointments to the different Barbary states, but having incurred the ire of their various rulers, he was no longer received by them and was reassigned to Madeira in 1807 and Cadiz in 1815. From 1818 to 1820, Cathcart served as naval agent for the protection of live oak timber in Florida, and his final years were spent working for the U.S. Treasury in Washington. In 1820, Cathcart formally applied for compensation for his past diplomatic services to the United States, most of them having been supervised by James Madison as Secretary of State (1801-9) or as president (1809-17). It is no doubt due to this relationship that Cathcart appealed to Madison, which prompted the present letter from Madison to President James Monroe.

MOST ATTRACTIVE MID-19TH CENTURY INDIGO CRUSHED MOROCCO, HANDSOMELY GILT, BY BEDFORD (stamp-signed on verso of front free endpaper), covers with gilt French fillet border, raised bands, spines lavishly and elegantly gilt in double-ruled compartments with large and complex central fleuron incorporating crown, pomegranate, fern, and palmette tools radiating from a central rosette, curling floral vine cornerpieces, densely gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, other edges rough-trimmed. With engraved frontispiece portraits of Bishop Burnet (volume I) and the Earl of Dartmouth (volume VI). Front pastedown with morocco bookplate of Robert Hoe. One joint just beginning to show wear, spines uniformly darkened to a lustrous deep blue, two boards somewhat faded (small portions of a few others slightly dulled from leather preservative), the two frontispieces and one gathering moderately foxed, occasional minor foxing or smudges elsewhere, other trivial imperfections, but still A FINE AND LOVELY SET, clean and fresh internally, with especially wide margins, and in bindings that make a beautiful appearance on the shelf. This is a very handsomely bound set of the classic posthumous history aptly titled "His Own Time" (and sometimes "My Own Times"), a reflection of the fact that the text reveals the personality and political leanings of Burnet (1643-1715) as much as the events he narrates. Originally published in two parts in 1724 and 1734, the account covers a period almost exactly coinciding with Burnet's lifetime, from the beginning of the English Civil War in 1642 up to the treaty of Utrecht in 1713. Our unusual critical edition was prepared by the Clarendon Press from copies which had belonged to the first Earl of Dartmouth (1672-1750), to speaker of the House of Commons Arthur Onslow (1691-1768), and to satirist Jonathan Swift. The editor has incorporated the marginal annotations made by these owners, as well as passages excluded from the original edition, but later added to the Onslow copy by the second Earl of Hardwicke, Philip Yorke (1720-90). According to DNB, Swift, who disagreed with Burnet on many things, filled the margins of his copy "with vitriolic comments such as 'dunce' and 'Scotch dog.'" Burnet's account has to be understood in light of the fact that he abhorred the immorality of Restoration life so much that he retired to Holland, where he became an adviser to William of Orange and accompanied the soon-to-be-king to England as his chaplain. Johnson is quoted by Lowndes as saying, "I do not believe that Burnet intentionally lied; but he was so much prejudiced, that he took no pains to find out the truth. He was like a man who resolves to regulate his time by a certain watch; but will not enquire whether the watch is right or not." Day is kinder, saying that, while the work "lacks the majestic style and architecture of Clarendon, [it] shows a distinctly modern concept of history writing, not as the struggle of personalities to be examined for its teaching of moral lessons, but as the contest of ideas and principles arising from the total maturation of society." For five years our binder Francis Bedford (1799-1883) managed the firm of Charles Lewis for the latter's widow and then was in a partnership for 10 years with John Clarke before establishing his own bindery in 1851. He shortly became recognized as the leading binder in fashionable West-End London, and his firm enjoyed prosperity not only until his death, but for a decade afterwards, under the ownership of Joseph Shepherd. Bedford bindings are almost always elegantly traditional in their design, as here, and they are consistently so well executed that their appeal to a wide audience has not diminished with the passage of time. Thomson [&c], 1823. * With chapters on: National and general Importance of the Cotton Manufacture; Early Modes of Spinning and Weaving; Improved Methods of Management and Disposal of Manufactured Cottons; Invention of the Spinning Jenny; Invention of the Water Frame, or Throstle; The Carding Engine; Some Account of the Life of Sir Richard Arkwright..; Change of Character and Manners in the Population, superinduced by the extension of the Cotton Manufacture; Moral and religious Character of Weavers; The Steam Loom, &c. Although Arkwright is credited with the invention of the cotton spinning machinery this was disputed and the DNB article on him devotes considerable space to the accusations - ably set forth in this book by Guest - that in constructing his cotton spinning machinery Arkwright copied and presented the ideas of several of his contemporaries without acknowledgement. Thomas Highs (1718-1803) is known for claiming patents on a spinning jenny, a carding machine, the throstle (a machine for the continuous twisting and winding of wool), and the water frame. In the present work, Richard Guest claims that Thomas Highs was the actual inventor of both Hargreaves' spinning jenny, and Arkwright's rollers, the feature of the water frame. It is alleged that Highs gave clockmaker Kay a wooden model of his rollers and asked him to make a working metal version. Kay did so before returning to live a few miles away in his native Warrington. Richard Arkwright met Kay on his business travels, gained his confidence, and over a drink in a public house persuaded him to hand over the secrets of Highs's machines. Arkwright, later Sir Richard Arkwright, massed a substantial fortune and reputation in the cotton industry from this invention, while Highs lived the rest of his life in obscurity before his death in 1803. *Guest was also profoundly interested in the social effects of these technical developments in the industry. The perceived threat of the power loom led to disquiet and industrial unrest and well-known protests movements such as the Luddites and the Chartists had hand loom weavers amongst their leaders. Here Richard Guest makes a comparison of the productivity of power and hand loom weavers: "It is a curious circumstance, that, when the Cotton Manufacture was in its infancy, all the operations, from the dressing of the raw material to its being finally turned out in the state of cloth, were completed under the roof of the weaver's cottage [this the subject of plate I]. The course of improved manufacture which followed, was to spin the yarn in factories and to weave it in cottages. At the present time, when the manufacture has attained a mature growth, all the operations, with vastly increased means and more complex contrivances, are again performed in a single building. The Weaver's cottage with its rude apparatus of peg warping, hand cards, hand wheels, and imperfect looms, was the Steam Loom factory in miniature. Those vast brick edifices in the vicinity of all the great manufacturing towns in the south of Lancashire, towering to the height of seventy or eighty feet, which strike the attention and excite the curiosity of the traveller, now perform labours which formerly employed whole villages. In the Steam Loom factories, the cotton is carded, roved, spun, and woven into cloth, and the same quantum of labour is now performed in one of these structures which formerly occupied the industry of an entire district. A very good Hand Weaver, a man twenty-five or thirty years of age, will weave two pieces of nine-eighths shirting per week, each twenty four yards long, and containing one hundred and five shoots of weft in an inch, the reed of the cloth being a forty-four, Bolton count, and the warp and weft forty hanks to the pound. A Steam Loom Weaver, fifteen years of age, will in the same time weave seven similar pieces. A Steam Loom factory containing two hundred Looms, with the assistance of one hundred persons under twenty years of age, and of twenty-five men will weave seven hundred pieces per week, of the length and quality before described. To manufacture one hundred similar pieces per week by the hand, it would be necessary to employ at least one hundred and twenty-five Looms, because many of the Weavers are females, and have cooking, washing, cleaning and various other duties to perform; others of them are children and, consequently, unable to weave as much as the men. It requires a man of mature age and a very good Weaver to weave two of the pieces in a week, and there is also an allowance to be made for sickness and other incidents. Thus, eight hundred and seventy-five hand Looms would be required to produce the seven hundred pieces per week; and reckoning the weavers, with their children, and the aged and infirm belonging to them at two and a half to each loom, it may very safely be said, that the work done in a Steam Factory containing two hundred Looms, would, if done by hand Weavers, find employment and support for a population of more than two thousand persons. The Steam Looms are chiefly employed in Weaving printing cloth and shirtings, but they also weave thicksetts, fancy cords, dimities, cambrics and quiltings, together with silks, worsteds, and fine woollen or broad cloth. Invention is progressive, every improvement that is made is the foundation of another, and as the attention of hundreds of skilful mechanics and manufacturers is now turned to the improvement of the Steam Loom, it is probable that its application will become as general, and its efficiency as great, in Weaving, as the Jenny, Water Frame and Mule, are in Spinning, and that it will, in this country at least, entirely supersede the hand Loom." p.44ff.

"Critisk undersögelse" är dessutom ett stycke medeltida litteraturhistoria av banbrytande karaktär. Johan Henrik Schröder (1791-1857) var 1825 ordinarie amanuens vid Uppsala universitetsbibliotek och prefekt för mynt- och medaljkabinettet. 1830 blev han professor i Uppsala. Hans bibliotek, "fullt af gamla sällsynta svenska böcker", såldes på bokauktion i Uppsala efter tryckt förteckning. Enligt Henrik Klemming rådde auktionsdagen sådan snöyra i Uppsala att många, både anbud och spekulanter, inte kunde komma fram till auktionen i tid. Böckerna såldes även mycket billigt

Engraved title with vignette of the "First Landing of Columbus in the New World", 18 fine hand- coloured engraved maps (16 double-page, 2 folding). Expertly bound to style in half-calf over contemporary marbled paper-covered boards, the flat spine gilt and divided into seven compartments by fillets and roll tools, lettered in the second compartment, the others with repeat decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers. A fine copy of the first collected edition of "the most distinguished atlas published in the United States during the engraving period" (Ristow). Tanner's New American Atlas contained the most accomplished series of maps of America that had yet appeared in an atlas. Of the greatest importance were the maps of American states. These maps were drawn up using a careful combination of original surveys and the best existing published sources. The evident high cost of production meant that the publishers took the decision to issue the maps in five separate parts which were published from 1819 to 1823. A second revised edition appeared in 1825. The maps, all of which are carefully hand-coloured, include a double-page world map, 4 double-page maps of continents, a map of South America on two joined sheets (numbered 6 and 7 in the index), a map of North America on 4 joined sheets (numbered 8 -11) and 11 double-page maps of the various States. The very large map of North America is of particular beauty and note. Wheat writes: "This map was a landmark - a great cartographical achievement ... Tanner made good use of a large number of intervening map, those of interest here being Humboldt's 'New Spain,' Pike's various maps, Long's map, and Pedro Walker's 'Map of New California' ... This 1822 map of North America was the progenitor of a long line of famous maps" (Wheat, II: pp. 82-87). Contemporary reviews of the atlas were favourable: the New American Atlas "is decidedly one of the most splendid works of the kind ever executed in this country" (United States Gazette, September 1823). Never "has either America or Europe, produced a geographical description of the several States of the Union, so honorable to the Arts, and so creditable to the nation as Tanner's American Atlas." (National Advocate 25 August 1824). Perhaps the most enthusiastic report came from the scholar Jared Sparks who wrote in the April 1824 issue of the North American Review that "as an American Atlas, we believe Mr. Tanner's work to hold a rank far above any other, which has been published." Contemporary black straight- grained morocco, the covers elaborately panelled in gilt, the spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second compartment, the others with elaborate repeat pattern built up from small tools, gilt turn ins, cream-glazed endpapers, red morocco inner hinges, gilt edges. A fine copy of an early impression of "Alken's most important work ... It must always form the cornerstone of any Alken collection" (Tooley). The plates and text between them offer a thorough survey of the sports practised in Great Britain in the first quarter of the nineteenth century. The subjects covered including riding, fox, stag and otter hunting, beagling, racing, falconry, various types of dogs and horses, shooting grouse, partridge, pheasant, snipe, wild-fowl, bittern, pigeon, fishing for pike, and salmon, fishing from a punt, prize-fighting, cock-fighting, badger, bear, and bull- baiting and perhaps most extraordinary of all: "owling." It is interesting to note that although both the artist and the author felt that it was necessary to record badger, bear and bull baiting they did not hold back from condemning all three sports as barbaric.This copy is a later issue. The additional title is dated 1821 (rather than 1820, as in the first issue), a letterpress title in French has been added (only the English title is present in the first and second issues) and the explanatory text leaves are signed consecutively from 1 to 50 (Podeschi records an intermediate state/issue where only some of the text leaves are numbered). The watermarks suggest a date of circa 1824. The plates, very carefully hand-coloured, are all aquatints by I. Clark, and retain all of the liveliness that is such a feature of this work. The artist Henry Thomas Alken was born into what became a sporting artistic dynasty. He studied under the miniature painter J.T. Barber and exhibited his first picture (a miniature portrait) at the Royal Academy when he was sixteen. He is best remembered for his hunting prints, many of which he engraved himself until the late 1830s ... Sir Arthur de Capell Brooke, 2nd Baronet (born in Northamptonshire 22 June 1791 - 6 December 1858) was a British baronet and travel writer, Fellow of the Royal Society (1823) and co-establisher of the Raleigh Club (1827). A classic travel narrative illustrated with beautiful lithographic plates depicting winter scenes and the general life in the north including how to travel with reindeers. The author is immersed in the mythology of the polar winter and its inhabitants, humans as well as animals. The plates captures the feel of the landscape and its people in a quite facinating way. Front board detached, pencil annotations in margins, Ex Library, Library bookplate on verso front board, library binding and covers in very poor condition. Discrete library stamp on plates, pages age toned, some foxing, odd stain but overall very clean condition. Good.

The memoires caused great scandal and became the first book to be censored by the German Confederation.At a ball in Paris, the notorious womanizer Duke Ernest I of Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld fell in love with the 17-year-old beauty Pauline Panam (in the memoirs she puts her age at 14). She accompanied him to Coburg, where she was to become his "demoiselle d'honneur". Once there, however, she found herself in dire straits. The duke left for St. Petersburg, and nobody wanted anything to do with her. In 1809 she gave birth to their son Ernest August, and the duke put her up in poor conditions in Frankfurt. Subjected to threats and scorn she fled, first to Dresden and then to Vienna, while Duke Ernest continued refusing to recognize the child. The duke's brother, his brother in law Grand Duke Konstantin, and even Prince Metternich now expressed their support for Pauline, forcing Ernest to offer an apology. Nevertheless, his persecution of Pauline continued unabated and he even tried to kill her and the child. She now received financial support from Grand Duke Constantin and was able to return safely to Paris, where she settled. Encouraged by the Prince of Ligne, she published these memoirs in 1823 in Paris. The publication caused a great scandal, as she openly indicted a prince and didn't hide the names of anyone involved. In a letter about the publication, which is reprinted in the preface of the book, the Prince of Ligne states that no longer can the knowledge of immoral actions be kept from the public, not even when princes are involved. Ernest now tried to get the book banned in all nations. He petitioned Metternich in Vienna, Louis XVIII in Paris etc. claiming that the book was an attack against all sovereign rulers, but met with success only in the Federal Assembly in Frankfurt which banned the book in the states of the German Confederation, the first book to be banned in Germany. This copy was given to the Swedish-Pomeranian adventurer Wilhelm von Runge (1746-1833) as a gift by the Prince of Ligne, probably in such case from the son of Charles Joseph, eugéne the 8th Prince of Ligne. Runge's books were inherited by Gustav Eric Adam Taube and were part of the so-called "Runge-Taube library at Ryningsholm". This library was sold at auction in 1901, where it was probably purchased by Carl Carlsson Bonde

Oskurna planscher och omslag, ett par hörn ngt fingersmutsade i marginalen. Mycket fint skick. Av största sällsynthet.. Gustaf (Gösta) Söderberg hörde till de så kallade 'målande militärerna' början av 1800-talet. Den gedigna teckningsundervisningen både vid Krigsskolan på Karlberg och Artillerihögskolan på Marieberg väckte många slumrande konstnärliga anlag. Efter 1814, då vår långa fredsperiod inleddes, var militätjänsten föga maktpåliggande. Det blev då vanligt att konstnärligt begåvade officerare gick på Konstakademien eller studerade vid andra målarskolor. Den militära lönen var knapp, och om man kunde slå mynt av sin talang blev det ett välkommet tillskott i kassan. En del var tjänstlediga i flera år för studier i Rom, Düsseldorf eller Paris. Gustaf Söderberg följde precis denna väg, men gjorde också en solid miltär karriär. Han var född i Norrköping men kom till Stockholm för att studera och umgicks där flitigt i konstnärskretsarna. Han reste även till Italien och Rom där han anslöt till kretsen av konstnärer kring skulptören Johan Niklas Byström. På hemvägen genom Frankrike 1821-2 utbildade sig Söderberg hos litograf-pionjären comte de Lasteyrie i Paris, och han blev därmed en av de tidigaste svenska litograferna. Från Paris skriver han till sin far den 1 juni 1822: "Jag har haft rekommendationsbrev till en grevinna Losteyrie [!] här, hennes man är bland uppfinnarna till litografien, och han har tillbjudit mig att lära mig den konsten till grunden, och det gör jag med största nöje, ej blott emedan det är roligt att kunna utan även därför, att det för det närvarande är högst nödvändigt även vid militären, ty här ritas alla kartor etc. numera i litografi. Nästa vecka tänker jag begynna på hans ateljé och hoppas att snart lära det." Som litograf torde Söderberg vara mest känd för sina militära uniformsplanscher. De föregicks dock av föreliggande album, som är ytterst sällsynt och inte ens verkar finnas bevarat i våra stora forskningsbibliotek. Det tycks ha varit avsett som det första i en serie, och motiven ger vid första anblicken ett märkligt spretigt intryck. Åtminstone tre av dem passar dock prydligt in i just Söderbergs biografi: Norrköping, Rom och Reggio, säkert finns även en förklaring till att just Västerås ingår. Man kan dock förmoda att den udda sammanställningen av motiv gjorde albumet svårsålt, vilket kanske förklarar dess sällsynthet. [På Konstakademien ställde Söderberg efter hemkomsten bland annat ut litografierna "Utsikt af Torre del diavolo vid Palermo" och "Utsigt af klostret S:t Rosalie vid Palermo", dessutom flera oljemålningar, däribland "Utsigt af Forum Romanum, tagen från Fransiskanerklostret Ara Coeli", "Utsigt af Aetna, tagen ifrån lavaklipporna vid Catania", och "Utsigt af Vesuvius, tagen från Neapel".]

A World map by one of America's first great cartographers The objective of depicting a three dimensional sphere on a two dimensional sheet of paper has challenged mapmakers since Classical times. Mercator's solution was to straighten all of the longitudinal meridians, making them perpendicular to the lines of latitude. The consequence of this projection was that while lands close to the Equator assumed a relatively realistic form, lands closer to the poles attained a progressively attenuated and exaggeratedly large appearance.The map reflects the great improvements in geographical understanding in the wake of the epic sea voyages of the late eighteenth-century, most notably those by Cook, La Perouse and Vancouver.

FURTHER PHOTOGRAPHS ON REQUEST. * William Scoresby (1789 -1857), Arctic explorer and scientist. His father, William Scoresby (1760-1829), made a fortune in the Arctic whale fishery. The son made his first voyage with his father at the age of eleven, and later accompanied him as chief officer of the whaler Resolution when on 25 May 1806, he succeeded in reaching 81°30' N. lat. (19° E. long), for twenty-one years the highest northern latitude attained in the eastern hemisphere. During the following winter, Scoresby attended the natural philosophy and chemistry classes at Edinburgh University, and again in 1809. In his voyage of 1807, Scoresby began the study of the meteorology and natural history of the polar regions. Earlier results included his original observations on snow and crystals; and in 1809 Robert Jameson brought certain Arctic papers of his before the Wernerian Society of Edinburgh, which at once elected him to its membership. In 1811, Scoresby's father resigned to him the command of the Resolution. In his voyage of 1813, he established for the first time the fact that the polar ocean has a warmer temperature at considerable depths than it has on the surface, and each subsequent voyage in search of whales found him no less eager of fresh additions to scientific knowledge. His letters of this period to Sir Joseph Banks, whose acquaintance he had made a few years earlier, no doubt gave the first impulse to the search for the North-West Passage which followed. In 1819, Scoresby gained election as a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and about the same time communicated a paper to the Royal Society of London: "On the Anomaly in the Variation of the Magnetic Needle". In his voyage of 1822 to Greenland, Scoresby surveyed and charted with remarkable accuracy 400 miles of the east coast, between 69° 30' and 72° 30', thus contributing to the first real and important geographic knowledge of East Greenland. His Journal of a Voyage to the Northern Whale Fishery, including Researches and Discoveries on the Eastern Coast of Greenland was published in 1823. This work is an account of his 1822 voyage, which combined several weeks whaling with the exploration of the Scoresby Sound region (on this voyage Scoresby named Scoresby land and Scoresby Sound) and approximately 800 miles of the East Greenland coast, searching for Esquimaux settlements and making scientific observations. He describes ice and weather conditions, optical phenomena, and ruins of Esquimaux dwellings and their burial places. Appended is a list of rock specimens by W.Jameson, an annotated list of 45 species of plants by Sir W. J. One of the most important early atlases printed in the United States: a handsome atlas of the Americas, with individual colour maps of each state in the Union, including a seminal map of the West by Stephen H. Long. At the time of publication this was the best and most detailed atlas to be produced in the United States. Fielding Lucas, the major Baltimore printer, was the principal engraver and substantial historical background text accompanies each map. Among the most noted maps in the atlas is Major Stephen H. Long's "Map of Arkansa and other Territories of the United States." That map, which depicts the Missouri basin between Nashville in the east, the Mandan villages in the north and the Rocky Mountains in the west, was based on the surveys conducted by Long on his expeditions of 1819 and 1820. The map published in Carey & Lea's atlas preceded the official account of that expedition by expedition botanist Edwin James, which included a smaller map with similar detail (titled "Country drained by the Mississippi Western Section"). Carey and Lea's 1823 publication of James Account perhaps explains the prior inclusion of this map with Long expedition information in their atlas. On this famous map is the printed legend, which would perpetuate a myth for many years to come, identifying the high plains as the "Great American Desert." Carey and Lea's atlas was first issued in 1822; this is the 1823 second issue, substantially the same as the first but with a new title and revised states of several maps and text leaves (generally minor revisions, including additional shading to maps and improved resetting of several text leaves, though this copy with first state settings of the Maryland and Virginia text leaves). First edition of an important work in the cracking of the code of the hieroglyphs and the decipherment of the Rosetta Stone. Thomas Young (1773-1830), gifted polymath blessed with an unusual understanding of languages, was one of the first to attempt to decipher and read Egyptian hieroglyphs. In 1814, equipped with Åkerblad's "Lettre" to De Sacy and a copy of the inscription on the Rosetta Stone, he began working on the three scripts of the famous Decree of Memphis. He made foundational discoveries and succeeded in translating the Demotic text, after which he was asked to write the article "Egypt" for the new edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica. "The article was printed in Part I of Vol. IV of the Supplement to the Encyclopaedia Britannica", and was published in 1819. It is the most important of Young's philological works, and is, practically, the foundation of the science of Egyptology." (Budge, p. 207).Young, however, failed to fully decipher the Hieroglyphic script and was thus only able to translate some of the stone. He believed the hieroglyphs were largely pictorial symbols that conveyed meaning without the use of language, whereas in fact they are largely signs recording the sounds of the Egyptian language, which is what his rival Jean-François Champollion realised in 1822.Although having failed at his attempt of a cracking the code of the hieroglyphs, Young certainly paved the way for Champollion to begin his own investigations."After the publication of his article "Egypt" [1819] in the "Encyclopaedia Britannica" he abandoned the study of hieroglyphs, most probably because he felt he was not equipped with adequate philological knowledge to continue the study successfully. Whether this be so or not matters little. The important fact to remember is that by his decipherment of the name PTOLEMY he opened the door of a chamber of philological mystery, and indicated the path to be followed by those who entered the chamber. We may now consider the labour of Champollion, who was one of the first to realize and to make use of Young's discoveries, which he developed with extraordinary ability and success." His monumental work "Précis du système hiéroglyphique" appeared two years later, and in that richly illustrated work he presents his definitive, expanded analysis, and finally corrects the misleading mistakes of the other Egyptologists, counting also Thomas Young.The present work by Young is published at the most crucial time of this massive philological discovery, namely in 1823, right in between the two monumental works of his greatest rival, the first of which announced for the first time the deciphering of the Rosetta Stone and provided the key to reading Egyptian hieroglyphs, the attempt at which Young himself had had to give up, and the second of which for the first time fully presents the deciphering of the hieroglyphs. When Champollion presented his "Lettre à Mr. Dacier" in 1822, Young did not doubt that he was right. He did, however, rightfully feel a claim to the great discovery, and his "An Account of Some Recent Discoveries in Hieroglyphical Literature" is without doubt a clear statement of this. The title-page even states "Including the Author's Original Alphabet, as Extended by Mr. Champollion". In his more extensive work from 1824, Champollion does much to point out the many mistakes of Young. "Between 1822-24 CHAMPOLLION worked incessantly, and was enabled to modify much of his earlier views, and to develop his Alphabet, -and he evolved some rudimentary principles of Egyptian Grammar. The results of his studies at this period he published in his "Précis du Système Hiéroglyphique", Paris, 1824, wherein he took special pains to inform his readers that his system had nothing whatever to do with that of Dr. YOUNG."
