(Leipzig, Barth), 1823.. (20 x 12 cm). SS. (337)-378. Broschur der Zeit. (Sonderdruck aus: Annalen der Physik).. Seltene erste Ausgabe. "In the paper prepared in 1823, Fraunhofer revealed his continued investigation of diffraction gratings... He continued his study of the effect of oblique rays, developed formulations based on a wave conception, and calculated a revised set of wavelengths for the major spectral lines. Thus, his earlier observations of the dark lines in the solar spectrum enabled him to make the highly precise measurements of dispersion: then his use of the wave theory of light allowed him to derive, with suitable simplifications, the general formulation of the grating equation still in use today" (DSB). - Leicht gebräunt und bestoßen, sonst gut erhalten. - DSB 5, 142

Autograph inscription signed "CMvWeber" to an unidentified male correspondent

. 53 x 126 mm., cut from the title page of one of Weber's works. Dated Dresden, October 22, 1823. In German (with translation). "Dedicated to the excellent master.... in great haste, in remembrance of his true admirer." Slightly worn and soiled; one vertical crease; portion of inscription abraided and thus illegible.. "A prototypical 19th-century musician-critic, [Weber] sought through his works, words and efforts as performer and conductor to promote art and shape emerging middle-class audiences to its appreciation. His contributions to song, choral music and piano music were highly esteemed by his contemporaries, his opera overtures influenced the development of the concert overture and symphonic poem, and his explorations of novel timbres and orchestrations enriched the palette of musical sonorities. With the overwhelming success of his opera Der Freischütz in 1821 he became the leading exponent of German opera in the 1820s and an international celebrity. A seminal figure of the 19th century, he influenced composers as diverse as Marschner, Mendelssohn, Wagner, Meyerbeer, Berlioz and Liszt." Philipp Spitta et al in Grove online

- Goed. VIII 139, 5, 5.         Autographed Manuscript Signed

Geneva, NY: , 1823 Geneva, NY, 1823. unbound. Original detailed autographed manuscript signed, folio, 10 pages (front and back), 13 x 8 inches, Geneva, New York, May 20, 1823 -- an extensive draft describing an invention that was called "a machine for hulking and cleaning clover seed," a device that was granted a patent by the United States Government on March 18, 1824. Burrall explains in detail that his innovation is unique because previous models wasted much of the seed, worked slowly, and ran at a great expense because they required immense power to propel them. "The machine that I am about to describe is free from all the above. It is cheap, simple and durable - may be propelled to advantage, either by hand by horse or water power - it feeds regularly & equally - the seed is beaten or whipped out lightly and briskly, all the light chaff containing no seed is thrown off before it reaches the working part of the mechanism." Much more exceptional content. This manuscript has heavy natural folds, but is still in very good condition. Pioneer, settler, and inventor who owned extensive land in the City of Geneva, Ontario County, New York. Despite holding patents for such successful inventions as the thrashing machine, the corn planter, cooking stove, and corn sheller, it was his association with Joseph Smith that would bring him notoriety. Historians speculate that Smith, the Mormon prophet, acquired use of some of Burrall's lands by the Seneca/Ontario border and on September 22, 1823 found the "certain plates of gold which recorded the true history of the Church of the American continent," the result becoming the Book of Mormon. Joseph Smith's use of clover seed is well documented in John Heinerman's acclaimed books "Joseph Smith and Herbal Medicine" and "Joseph Smith and Natural Foods.

, 1823. 1823. Tom, Jerry, and Bob Logic en FrançaisIn a Magnificent 'Royal' Binding by René SimierMerci Buccups![CRUIKSHANK, George and Robert, illustrators]. EGAN, Pierce. Paris: chez Jules Didot [and] Baudouin Frères, 1823. First edition in French of Egan's Life in London. Tall octavo (8 7/8 x 5 3/8 in; 227 x 139 mm). [4], 235, [1, blank] pp. Twenty-four hand-colored aquatint engravings, with tissue guards, after George and Robert Cruikshank, unsigned, but similar to those used in the English version of Egan's classic, which contained thirty-six plates. Bound by "grand-maitre" René Simier of Paris (stamp-signed at spine foot) in gilt-decorated contemporary full crimson straight-grained morocco with gilt "E" beneath gilt imperial crown to upper board: likely the copy of Eugene de Beauharnais (1781-1824), Duke of Leuchtenberg and Prince of Eichstadt, the adopted son of Napoleon and viceroy of Italy, or an aristocratic Elizabeth. Gilt rolls to board edges, gilt dentelles. All edges gilt. Upper wrapper preserved. Two wee wormholes along lower joint, otherwise a very fine copy. "By finding the right men [the Cruikshanks] for his work [Egan] made Life In London one the great successes of the day, comparable to that other triumphant alliance of humour and art in the pages of Dr Syntax" (Prideaux)."A journalist, and a well-known character in his day, [Pierce Egan] wrote nothing so popular as this Life in London. Indeed, the taste for it amounted to a craze. For his illustrations, Egan went to two brothers, Isaac Robert and George Cruikshank…the success of the work was so great that the artists could not colour the engravings fast enough for the demand. It suited the taste of the time, when a ‘fast’ life had become a sophisticated and conscious aim. Life in London is a guide to a fast life.…Part of the success enjoyed by [Pierce Egan’s Life in London] was due, no doubt, to its readers’ belief that they could name the originals of the fictitious characters. Imitations came swift and frequent…" (The Cambridge History of English and American Literature ).René Simier (1772-1843) was one of the major French bookbinders of the 19th century along with Jean-Georges Purgold and Joseph Thouvenin. He should not be confused with his son, Alphonse, who led the bindery from 1823 until 1848. Born in Sarthe May 20, 1772, he was first a worker in a printing region, before settling in Paris, certainly in 1796. He developed a highly significant reputation, and became bookbinder to the Empress Marie-Louise and the king, as well as Louis-Philippe. He was deeply involved in the technical and aesthetic evolution of bookbinding, Cohn 263.

NARRATIVE OF A JOURNEY TO THE SHORES OF THE POLAR SEA, IN THE YEARS 1819, 20, 21, AND 22...WITH AN APPENDIX ON VARIOUS SUBJECTS RELATING TO SCIENCE AND NATURAL HISTORY

London: John Murray, 1823.. London: John Murray, 1823.. iii-xvi,768pp., plus thirty plates (eleven in color) and four folding maps. Quarto. Mid-19th-century three-quarter morocco and marbled boards. Corners scuffed, joints rubbed. Bookplate of Henry Marquand on the front free endpaper. Scattered foxing, occasional offsetting. Text and maps are clean and bright. Overall a very good, attractive copy. With the errata slip not found with all copies. The plates in this copy are bound as detailed on the list of illustrations, entirely in the text, with no plate as a frontispiece. The narrative of Franklin's first expedition of 1819- 22. Franklin, along with naturalist Dr. John Richardson, was appointed to lead an expedition overland from Hudson Bay to east of the mouth of the Copper-Mine River for the purposes of establishing the latitudes and longitudes of the northern coast of America, developing a correct geographical description of the country, and searching for a northwest passage. Franklin's narrative includes a great deal of detail regarding the country, native Indians, the murder of Robert Hood, and the disappointment in failing to find a passage. Sabin calls the appendix "valuable" in its contribution to the knowledge of natural history in the area. The handsome plates include illustrations of the native Indians and Eskimos (many of them attractively colored), artifacts, types of fish, and ships at sea. "'The views of Arctic scenery with which these volumes are both illustrated and embellished, are of extreme beauty.' - QUARTERLY REVIEW" - Sabin. Two issues were published of this first volume, both in 1823. The present issue is the first, since it contains an errata slip listing changes which were incorporated into the second issue. The second issue consists of xv,[2],783,[1] pages and appears to contain the same plates, although several bibliographers call for four additional plates in the second issue (see Streeter and Sabin). The second issue contains a longer introduction, with an additional note about the moral condition of the Indians. The main text appears to be extremely similar (though not identical) up to page 730, in the midst of John Richardson's "Botanical Appendix," and thereafter a number of changes are incorporated into the second issue. The third edition of Wagner-Camp lists the second issue, and the fourth edition of Wagner-Camp lists the first issue. One of the maps called for in the list of plates and maps, "[Route] From Slave Lake to the Arctic Sea," is not present, and "An Outline to Shew the Connected discoveries of Capts. Ross, Parry & Franklin in the years 1818, 19, 20 and 21" is in its place. Apparently this was the map that was issued with the book, since it is contained in Streeter's copy and that of the Bancroft Library, which are also copies of this first issue (although evidently Wagner's copy contained the "correct" map). The error in the list of maps printed in the book is not corrected in the second issue, and the "Outline..." map is present in that volume as well. WAGNER-CAMP 23:1. FIELD 560. HILL 635. GRAFF 1406.         J. M. Elford’s Marine Telegraph; or, Universal Signal Book

Charleston, SC: , 1823. Charleston, SC, 1823. Handcolored plate and handcolored ill. on front pastedown. (5), x-xii, (2), vii, (1) xiii-xvi, (1), 18-75, (3), 81, 8 pp. “So composed as to enable vessels at sea, provided with only two sets of the six telegraphic flags, described in the plate, to make 7569 signals ... and to act as telegraphs to each other ... Being also the key to the patent telegraph, invented by the author, capable of making 9330 progressive changes, by using the figures from 1 to 6 only.” This is quite an early American signal book. Truxtun and Porter had previously developed systems for naval use, but as far as I know this is the earliest American merchant system. Winterthur has a manuscript copy of Elford’s Signal system dated 1818. It was followed in 1832 by Parker’s signal book and then, in 1847, by Rogers’ system. Elford’s marine visual system depended on six uniquely patterned flags, and on a “conversation flag.” These are illustrated in this book, along with a glossary of words and sentences, and their numerical equivalents, which would be signaled by means of the flags. A sheet of testimonials has been pasted on the inside of the front board. At the bottom of this sheet is a tipped in paper listing “Agents.” Lemuel Moody of Portland is the first name. It would be interesting to know if he used Elford’s system to signal from his observatory. The front blank is inscribed, “Ship Marengo of New Orleans.” On the following blank is a hand colored illustration with manuscript showing the four flags that would signal Marengo’s identifying number. I have had this book twice before. Both of those copies ended at page 75, followed by a three page “Supplement.” In this copy the “Supplement is four pages long. It is followed by an 8 page dictionary listing ships and their identifying number. Rare. Worldcat shows only six libraries holding copies, none of which conform to this issue in terms of pagination. Bound in marbled boards with old linen over calf backstrip. Inner hinges cracked. sewing tight. Handcolored plate and illustrations are clean.

He called himself 'Portrait and Military painter' and was reputed to be an 'ex-captain of dragoons' but is not recorded in the Army List. Heath began life as a draughtsman and his main claim to fame rests on his having produced the first caricature magazine in Europe, The Glasgow later Northern Looking-Glass, 1825-1826. Although this was a provincial work and without much text, it does pre-date Charles Philipon's similar publication. The height of his popularity fell between the years 1809-34, after which his humour was displaced by that of Robert Seymour and John Doyle" (Houfe, p. 338).Abbey, Life 361. Tooley 257.
