"Edizione originale", molto rara trovarla completa. ?Antonmarchi served as personal physician to Napoleon at St. Helena and achieved a certain editorial notoriety as the editor of Paolo Mascagni?s posthumous "Prodromo della grande anatomia". Upon termination of his obligations with Mascagni?s heirs, he seems to have considered the rights his own and republished the plates in the present edition, with some modifications, under his own name - without denying their provenance. He nevertheless failed to cite Mascagni on the title page and this was poorly received by the medical community. The work was conceived so that the entire human body might be represented (in life size) by joining three of the plates together. This may be achieved a number of times to depict the complete skeleton, the blood vessels, the muscles (front and back) and the viscera. Further detailed plates are dedicated to the brain, the heart, the lymphatic system, etc.?. Cfr. Choulant ?History and bibliography of anatomic illustration?, pp. 319 - 320 che cita erroneam. 45 + 45 tavv.

Edinburgh: Bell & Bradfute. 1823. "First edition, 8vo, pp. [iii]-xiv, 574, [2]; 7 engraved plates (2 folding); bound without the half-title in contemporary half polished tan calf, black morocco label on gilt-decorated spine; upper joint tender, else very good. Neill writes in his Preface that the journey, on which he was accompanied by John Hay and J. MacDonald, was undertaken to ""take notice of any new or uncommon varieties of fruits and culinary vegetables, which it might be desirable to introduce into Scotland; and to establish a correspondence with some of the principal amateur cultivators and professional nurserymen."" Neill (1776-1851) became head of a large printing firm but during the last thirty years of his life took little active part in its management. He was an active botanist and horticulturist, and was the first secretary of both the Caledonian Horticultural Society and the Wernerian Natural History Society. He was the author of a number of books and articles on horticultural subjects, and the gardens at his residence were always open to visitors."

        Le Maitre D'Hotel Français

Paris: Firmin Didot, 1823. First Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Good Condition. Contemporary acid calf, rubbed with surface scrapes, tail of spine damaged on volume 1. The second state of the first edition (the first is dated 1822), the second edition was 1842. 25 folding menus, a number creased and misfolded; 2 damaged (torn off at the folds) plates of table settings in volume 1, 4 plates plus the frontis in volume 2, the three large folding plates of settings at the rear soiled a bit. Lacking the plates of the grand buffet. Scattered mostly mild foxing to the text and the plates, a few other minor marks and an ink spot in the lower margin, but clean otherwise. Engraved extra title in volume 1 and the declaration signed by Carême. iv, 348pp; 282pp, + errata. Cagle 122, Oberele 187, Vicaire 145, Bitting 75. Despite his reputation for opulence, it was Carême's contention that the revolution had simplified and improved French cuisine, forcing cooks to rely more on skill rather than simply leaning on expensive and lavish ingredients. He lays out this contention in the preface where he puts down the notion that 17th and 18th century cuisine was superior to the 19th and articulates his enlightenment vision of an improving and adapting French cuisine ever perfecting but never perfect. The 25 folding menus are for all seasons of the year and various time periods. Legend has it that Talleyrand had Carême create a year of menus using only seasonal produce as a condition of his employment. Size: 8vo. 2-volume set (complete). Quantity Available: 1.         SICILIAN SCENERY

London: Rodwell and Martin, 1823. FIRST EDITION n. Hardcover. A Finely Bound Book of Sicilian Views, the Front Cover with an Immense Scenic "Miniature," Surely by Miss Currie. 292 x 260 mm (11 1/2 x 10 1/4"). [62] leaves of text (plus plates). FIRST EDITION. HANDSOME FOREST GREEN CRUSHED MOROCCO BY SANGORSKI & SUTCLIFFE FOR HENRY SOTHERAN, covers with gilt fillet frame and filigree cornerpieces composed of small tools and fleurons, center of FRONT COVER WITH A FINELY EXECUTED RECESSED OVAL MINIATURE ON IVORY UNDER GLASS (with diameters measuring approximately 115 and 152 mm.), the miniature depicting a rocky shoreline and two wooden fishing boats, this within a brass collar encircled by gilt tooling; raised bands, spine gilt in densely tooled compartments, gilt-framed turn-ins, watered silk endleaves, all edges gilt (the miniature perhaps affixed to the present binding some years after it was originally painted). Engraved title and 61 FINE PLATES OF VIEWS from drawings by Peter De Wint (based on sketches by William Light) and engraved by Heath, Finden, Wallis, Askey, and others. Each leaf of descriptive text with English on the recto and French on the verso. Lowndes III, 2199; Graesse IV, 209. About a fourth of the plates with moderate scattered marginal foxing (two engravings a bit more noticeably affected), text with faint offsetting from plates and more pronounced occasional foxing, but none of these problems serious, and generally quite a satisfactory copy internally, with clean and fresh text leaves and with excellent impressions of the plates; THE VERY STRIKING BINDING LUSTROUS AND UNWORN. This is an unusually beautiful travel book, with fine engravings internally and a memorable painted scene on the front cover. An inveterate traveller who sketched most of the places he visited, William Light (1786-1839) produced the original versions of the views included here during a visit to Sicily in 1818. Another collection of his drawings, "Views of Pompeii," was published in 1828, but almost all of the sketches he produced during his lifetime were destroyed in a fire in 1839. Those that remain are housed at the University of Adelaide (Light had become the first Surveyor-General of South Australia in 1836, and was responsible for choosing the location of its capital, Adelaide, as well as for designing the layout of the city). Our "Cosway-style" volume is distinguished as the platform for a striking painted miniature of remarkable size, a scene that is so beautifully done as to be comfortably attributable to Miss C. B. Currie, the finest artist to produce binding adornments of this sort. The particular palette of soft colors used and the delicate brush strokes are hallmarks of her work. Although the vast majority of her miniatures are portraits, Currie was also adept at rendering landscapes. For example, the scene here is similar in style, technique, and color to the miniatures she executed for another scenery book, Gerning's "Picturesque Tour along the Rhine" (sold at the Safra sale at Sotheby's in October of 2011). Our miniature is also similar in size to those on the Gerning, and is surely among the largest Currie views (or scene by any other painter) to appear on a book cover.

The first edition was published in. Modena, 1700, and reprinted in Utrecht in 1703 - the SLS Library has one copy of the latter. A revised edition (Modena 1713) is the definitive one, containing many corrections to the first and a Supplement of twelve new chapters on trades previously undescribed. Apart from reprints there are twenty-five editions and translations published before the middle of the nineteenth Century. The latest English edition was published in New York in 1940. The Present, very rare, edition is the third German. Dreceded by editions of 1718 and 170-1783. - - Ramazzini's famous 'De morbis artificum diatriba' opened up an entirely new department of modern medicine, viz., trade diseases and industrial hygiene, and is the first book dealing adequately with occupational diseases. - - Ramazzini was professor of medicine at Modena and at Padua until his death in 1714. He was not only the founder and greatest exponent of a new medical discipline, but he was also an excellent general clinician, epidemiologist, sanitarian, and poet. He wrote on the water supply of Modena, cattle plague, personal hygiene, and on the use of cinchona bark. - - Occasional references had been made to occupational diseases in general medical works since the time of Hippocrates. Paracelsus had been concerned with diseases of miners. Ramazzini methodically collected all that had been written before him on the subject and set to investigate the diseases of artisans, their causes, and the relations that existed between the disease and the occupation. In a series of masterly observations, still worthy of being read with interest and profit, he recognizes the harmful effects of metals used in various techniques, noting the damage produced by mercury in surgeons using mercurial inunctions, in chemists and pharmacists who prepared the remedies, and in gilders. He describes various disorders that attack painters due to lead poisoning. He speaks authoritatively of the diseases of tinners and of coloured-glass workers who handle antimony. He points out that disorders can result from the strain of unusual physical demands or postures, such as those required of tailors. Among his more astute observations are his accounts of the "phthisis" acquired by stone-workers and miners (silicosis and pneumoconiosis). - - There are even chapters devoted to the diseases of monks, nuns, capitalists, etc. and also of writers and "learned men" who by spending their time mostly indoors, sitting still and trying eyes, contracted serious diseases. This latter is further discussed by Linnaeus in his dissertation, Morbi artificum (1765). - - Ramazzini was the first to recognize the social significance of occupational diseases and his book appeared at a most opportune time, since, with the beginning of industrial development in the eighteenth Century, prevention of accidents from machinery and the general health of workers became increasingly important. Few classical works in medicine equal Ramazzini's book in the pleasure it gives to read today. - - "The Italian joumal of social hygiene, published since 1907, is entitled 'II Ramazzini'. - - Garrison-Morton 2121 (1st. Ed.); Castiglioni 564 - 565; Lily Libray, Notable Medical Books, 99 (1st. ed.); Printing and the Mind of Man, 170 (1st. Ed.); Rosen, History of miners' diseases (1943), 108 - 120; Waller 7728.
