Seine eigentliche künstlerische Ausbildung folgte dann bei dem Architekten Gg. Moller (1784-1852) in Darmstadt. Von dort aus trat er 1828 eine für ihn sehr wichtige Studienreise nach Italien an.         Involuntary Thoughts

London: Thomas M'Lane, Repository of Wit and Humour, 1823. First Edition. With six hand-colored plates (of eight), each plate containing two or more subjects. 1 vols. Oblong 8vo. Full green morocco, front wrapper preserved at back. Marginal repair at foot of one plate, not enetering image. Tooley cites eight plates, from the British Museum copy, but notes, "M'Lean's advertisement of this work in A Touch at the Fine Arts calls for 6 plates only." The six plates in this set correspond exactly to the six in the Dixon collection (sold 1937) and, like that set, two of the plates are dated 1823, the rest 1824. A humorous look at life's vicissitudes (under the caption "More Friends and less need of them" a startled host and hostess, presiding over an already over-crowded dinner table see an additional horde of unexpected guests enter the room; "A Fowl Conspiracy" shows two men stealing chickens; in "May the endeavour to Please be crown'd with success" a polite man and woman bow to one another and inadvertantly cause all sorts of havoc in the street). Alken was an early and spirited illustrator of Murphy's Law, "If things can go wrong, they will." Attractive copy of a classic collection.

The Social Day: A Poem, in Four Cantos

London: Printed by J.(ames) Moyes, Greville Street for James Carpenter & Son, Old Bond Street; and R. Ackermann, Strand, 1823. First Edition, Large Paper copy. Engraved title, portrait, and 30 engraved plates with India proofs before letters tipped in. xvi, [16], 354, [4] pp. 1 vols. 4to (11 x 7-1/2 inches). Bound in full purple morocco by Zaehnsdorf in an EXHIBITION BINDING with gilt stamp on back pastedown, original paper label tipped in at back, with price for Large Paper Copies stated as "£4. 4." and also marked "Subscriber's Copy." Open-faced purple morocco slipcase. The First Steel-Engraved Plate?, LARGE PAPER, WITH INDIA PROOFS The plate on page 288, "Silent the guest surveyed the crowd", engraved by Charles Warren, the leading protagonist of steel-engraving at this time, is dated 1822, and has traditionally been considered to be the first steel-engraved book illustration. Basil Hunnisett, in Steel Engraved Book Illustrations in England, expresses doubts as to whether it actually was engraved on steel, suggesting that the first may be Warren's engraving of Adam and Eve for an 1822 edition of Paradise Lost. Whatever the case may be, Coxe's poem - a paean to the pleasures of rural pastimes, especially sporting amusements - is beautifully illustrated in this sumptous Ackermann production. Berry and Poole, in Annals of Printing, dates the first steel engravings at 1823, but does not cite a specific book. The book has an illustration by Constable, one of the first artists lending their work to this new media. A note at the front of the book and on the list of subscribers identifies this as Scottish artist David Wilkie's copy. He painted the scene after which the plate at page 288 was engraved.

Collection of Nine (9) Lithographs on Gastronomy

1823. |~||~||~|FRENCH GASTRONOMY BOILLY, Louis Léopold. Collection of Nine (9) Hand-Coloured Lithographs on Gastronomy. Small folio (see individual sizes below). Each lithograph professionally matted. Preserved in a black custom cloth and wood folding box. Paris: Delpech, 1823-27. |~||~||~||~| First issue of these lithographs, the state with the "très délicat" original hand-colouring. Expressive and humorous, these French scenes on the theme of gastronomy offer a cross-section of early nineteenth-century French men, women, and children engaged in drinking wine and l'eau de vie, eating oysters, ice cream, grapes, doughnuts, and cracking and consuming nuts. Not only exceptional for the gastronomical interest, the Boilly images of tight clusters of expressive faces showcase French caricature at its very best. Printed on thick paper without watermark. These nine lithographs belong to the voluminous suite entitled Recueil de grimaces created by Boilly and printed by the lithographer François-Séraphin Delpech (1778-1825). The complete suite comprises ninety-six lithographs and survives complete in one copy only (see below). The Boilly lithographs were mostly sold as single sheets, either in black and white or, for a premium price, with the "très délicat" artistic hand-colouring. Louis Léopold Boilly's (1761-1845) career spanned the Ancien Regime, the French Revolution, the age of Napoleon, the Bourbon Restoration, and the July Monarchy. He was the son of a wood sculptor, and became a portrait and genre scene painter, specializing in Parisian social customs and scenes of the middle class. Laran and Adhémar state that Boilly produced over 1000 genre paintings and between 4000 and 5000 portraits during his career. Boilly is also known as a pioneer of lithography, being credited with producing the first lithograph in France on June 9, 1802, a portrait of Johann Theodor Susemihl, which "passé pour la plus ancienne lithographie française à date certain" (Laran and Adhémar, p. 52). He exhibited at the Paris salon between 1791 and 1823, receiving a gold medal at the Salon in 1804. Boilly was made Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur in 1833. Rarity: Since the series was more often sold in single prints, complete sets of Boilly's Grimaces are of exceptional rarity; OCLC lists only three sets, each with various plate counts: the Bibliothéque nationale de France is the only institution with the complete number of 96 lithographs. A collection of 68 Boilly lithographs from Grimaces is located at the Kunstbibliothek Staatliche Museum zu Berlin, and a suite of 8 plates is located at the Getty Museum. Single Boilly lithographs in black and white appear on the print market with some regularity. Condition: very fine impressions with delicate, artistic hand-colouring.         Reliquiae Diluvianae; or, Observations on the Organic Remains contained in Caves, Fissures, and Diluvial Gravel, and on other Geological Phenomena, attesting the Action of an Universal Deluge.

London: John Murray, . First edition. 1823 - Pp. vii, [1], 303; 27 engraved or lithographed plates and maps (3 are finely hand-colored - 1 is folding), 1 folding printed table, some text-figures. Contemporary tan full-calf leather, spine with 5 raised bands lettered in gilt on black morocco title/author label in one compartment and with elaborate gilt decorations in the other five compartments, all page edges with marbling, 4to (11 x 8.5 inches). William Buckland (1784 - 1856) was an English theologian and geologist/paleontologist, writing the first full account of a fossil dinosaur (Megalosaurus). His work proving that Kirkdale Cave had been a prehistoric hyena den was praised as an example of how scientific analysis could reconstruct events from the distant past (this study is documented in 'Reliquiae Diluvianae'). Buckland was a proponent of the Gap Theory that interpreted the biblical account of Genesis as referring to two separate episodes of creation separated by a lengthy period; it emerged in the late 18th and early 19th centuries as a way to reconcile the scriptural account with discoveries in geology that suggested the earth was very old (modified after Wiki). In this volume, Buckland presents his "Gap Theory;" concluding "that species of animals that now exist together only in the tropics had coexisted in northern Europe with species still in existence and that this demonstrated a tropical climate in antediluvial times, before the deluge buried the bones in a layer of mud" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography, vol. II: 569). A scientifically valuable work that paved the way for our modern understanding of the age of the Earth and the role that geology plays in landscape evolution. From the library of Henry Labouchère with his armorial bookplate on the front endpaper. Labouchère (1831 - 1912) was an English politician, writer, publisher and theatre owner in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Labouchère, was a member of parliament and edited his own magazine, 'Truth' (modified after Wiki). A few old mars to the calf covers, spine has been expertly rebacked with the original calf spine strip laid on with no loss (this old repair is barely noticeable), endpapers show some light marginal browning, the text and plates are tight, bright and clean with no defects, there is some minor offsetting from some plates onto their facing text or blank page; this is a beautiful copy of a rare work in near fine condition.
