A Concise Narrative of a Tour, Through Some Parts of England, France, Holland, Switzerland, and Italy, in the Years 1799, 1800, 1801, and 1802: In a Letter to a Friend in England

Philadelphia: Printed by Joseph Rakestraw, 1821, 1821. First and only edition. American Imprints 5047; OCLC records five copies: LC, Earlham, AAS, Swathmore (2). Wrappers a little worn; fine copy.. 12mo, contemporary stiff marbled wrappers, 21 pages. A rare published account of Beulah Biddle Sansom's travels with her husband, Joseph Sansom, in Europe during the early years of their marriage. Joseph Sansom (1765-1826) was from a prosperous Philadelphia family and could afford the leisurely life of the grand tour, about which he wrote in his Letters from Europe . . . Philadelphia, 1805. Mrs. Sansom also wrote letters about their trip, including this very long and detailed one, but her version of their sojourn was not published until this privately printed edition in 1821. The person to whom the letter is addressed is not identified, and neither is the author, but on the final page of text is the following inscription: "Philadelphia 3rd Mo, 1833 / Presented to Elizabeth Wistar / By her friend / Beulah Sansom." There is a similar inscription in one of the five copies described in OCLC.

Istoria dei Progetti e delle Opere per la Navigazione-interna del Milanese

Six large folding engraved plates. xiv, 291 pp. Large 4to, cont. green half-sheep maroquiné & marbled boards, flat spine gilt, red leather lettering piece on spine, uncut. Milan: G. Bernardoni, 1821. First edition of Bruschetti's first history of the construction of the canals, channels, and aqueducts linking the city of Milan to several important rivers and providing water for the city and its environs. Bruschetti (1793-1871), was a historian of science and an observer of the industrialization of Milan. The first chapter discusses the pre-18th-century projects to build canals and channels in order to drain lands and to bring water from the Alps to the rapidly growing city. The earliest canal, the Naviglio Grande, dates from 1177-1257. Chapter II is concerned with 18th-century building projects. The remaining chapters discuss the extensive and complex early 19th-century public works projects of canals, aqueducts, and wells which provided water to the city and irrigated the surrounding farm lands. There is also much on the canals -- including the Naviglio Grande, Naviglio Pavese, and the Canale di Pavia -- which connect Milan to the Ticino, Po, and Adda rivers, Lago di Como, and Lago Maggiore. The fine and very large folding engraved plates consist of two maps showing the routes of the canals and four plates depicting the construction details of the canals including locks and embankments. A fine and attractive copy with large margins. Early bookplate of "Ingenare Flaviano Ballarati di Sacconago." .

Sebastian Adam Kraffts Juristisch-Practisches Worterbuch, Ganz.

1821 - Rare Nineteenth-Century German Dictionary of Criminal Slang Krafft, Sebastian Adam. [Schott, August Ludwig]. Sommer, Johann Christoph Friedrich Carl, Editor. Sebastian Adam Kraffts Juristisch-Practisches Worterbuch, Ganz Umgeargeitet und Bedeutend Vermehrt Nebst Angehangtem Worterbuche uber die Rothwelsche Sogenannte Jauner- oder Zigeuner- und Spitzbuben-Sprache. Erlangen: In der Palm'schen Verlagsbuchhandlung, 1821. [i], viii, 365, [1] pp. Main text in parallel columns. Octavo (8" x 4-1/2"). Contemporary marbled board, calf lettering piece to spine. Light rubbing to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, heavier rubbing to spine with some loss to ends, joints just starting, corners bumped and somewhat worn, rear free endpaper glued to rear pastedown, contemporary book seller ticket to front pastedown, price annotation by that bookseller to front free endpaper. Light toning to text, somewhat heavier in places, small faint stains to some leaves, internally clean. An appealing copy of a rare title. * Only edition. Edited by Sommer, this detailed dictionary of "the secret language and jargon of criminals, gypsies and other scoundrels" is based on a book published in 1793 as August Ludwig Schotts Kurzes Juristisch-Practisches Worterbuch. The text of the 1793 title page, listing Scott as the compiler and Krafft as the editor, is on a leaf facing the title page. It suggests the book was published at an earlier date without Kraffts assistance, but we have not been able to locate any copies. It may have been a work that circulated in manuscript copies. Schott was a law professor and state official in Brandenburg, Sommer was a state official in Bavaria. We have not been able to locate any details about Krafft. Extremely clean copy of volume one (of three) of an important American flora, a work which includes the first successful use of stipple engraving in the United States. 16 plates are by Cornelius Tiebout, "the first really skilled engraver born in the United States, although he trained in London for two years in the 1790s to perfect his technique" - Reese. The book is described as "magnificently illustrated" (DAB) with "plates [that] are clear, soft and lovely' (Bennett). Original half red calf with marbled boards. Spine lacking, front cover detached but present. Internally, very good.An important American flora, "magnificently illustrated" (DAB) with "plates [that] are clear, soft and lovely" (Bennett). The work includes the first successful use of stipple engraving in the United States. This set includes the rare "To Subscribers" leaf in the second volume. In addition to its significance as a botanical work, Barton's FLORA. is also one of the most important early color plate books produced entirely in the United States. "The plates were made by [amongst others] Cornelius Tiebout, the first really skilled engraver born in the United States, although he trained in London for two years in the 1790s to perfect his technique" - Reese. Barton states in the advertisement to the first volume that some of the "plates are printed in color, and are afterwards colored by hand. It is confidently believed by the author, that they will be found the most successful attempts at imitation by sound engraving, of the French style, yet made in this country." He goes on to note that the method of color printing was the result of "repeated experiments" owing "to the impossibility of obtaining information as to the manner of coloring abroad." The text gives details of each species, its Latin binomial, common name, and class and order according to the Linnean system, followed by interesting information about the history of the discovery of the species and details about its geographical range. The plates appeared in installments between 1822 and 1828, followed by several instalments of text, and finally a supplement volume in 1833. Some confusion exists as to the general title of the work, since the volumes of plates are titled "Plantae medicinales", whereas the text volume was published as "Plantae officinales". Bookplate and library stamps in each volume. Some browning and foxing as usual; bindings worn. A good set, rare in its present complete form. GFB, p. 69. Johnston 945. Nissen, BBI 1442. Plesch p. 347. Pritzel 6662. Stafleu/C. 17391. Cf. Graesse IV, 655.

On the Causes, Laws and Phenomena of Heat, Gases, Gravitation I, II, III" in Annals of Philosophy, or Magazine of Chemistry, Mineralogy, Mechanics, Natural History, Agriculture and the Arts 1 pp. 273-293, 340-351, 401-416, 1821

      - HANDSOMELY BOUND FIRST EDITION OF HERAPATH'S 1821 MECHANICAL THEORY OF HEAT, A WORK CONSIDERED BY MANY TO BE "THE FIRST PAPER ON KINETIC THEORY IN 1821" (Mehra, The Historical Development, 13). Without question, Herapath's work, present here in a paper published in three parts, was the fullest and clearest exposition of the mechanical theory of heat to that time. Following the early work of Euler and Bernoulli, the kinetic theory of gases lay dormant until the 1821 work of the English physicist John Herapath (1790-1868). According to the author, in about 1811 and while engaged with calculations related to a lunar equation, he found himself pondering Newton's explanations as to the cause of gravitation, writing: "If gravitation depends upon the action of an elastic medium such as Newton supposed, which grows rarer and rarer as you approach the dense bodies of the sun and planets, there ought to be some reason for this variation of density? I began to consider what it might be. It occurred to me that if this medium be of the same nature as our atmosphere and other gaseous bodies, that is, if it be capable of being expanded by heat and contracted by cold, then the sun being a very hot body, and the heat being so much the greater the nearer we are to him, the density of the medium ought therefore to decrease with a decreasing and increase with an increasing distance, the same as Newton would have it. And because we find by experience that dense solid bodies receive heat more strongly than much rarer ones, particularly than gases, the dense bodies of the planets being heated by the solar rays as well as by the medium about them, ought it appeared to me, to be hotter than this medium, and consequently ought to produce the same effects on the medium as the sun, though cot in so great a degree. Therefore if as Newton imagines, the particles of the planets be impelled toward the sun by the inequality of the pressure on their further and nearer sides, the denser parts of the medium pressing more forcibly than the rarer, the same reason will likewise hold good why bodies should be impelled toward the planets and other material parts of the system" (Herapath 1821).Following this line of thought, in these three papers, Herapath "proposed that the momentum of a particle in a gas is a measure of the absolute temperature of the gas. He used momentum rather than kinetic energy because it did not require the assumption that the collisions between atoms are elastic, but this led him to incorrectly propose that the product of pressure and volume is proportional to the square of the absolute temperature rather than the absolute temperature. As a result, his proposal was suggestive of the correct answer (temperature is related to pressure and volume), but was incorrect in the specifics of that relationship" (Wenner Collection). While the import of Herapath's work is fully acknowledged now, in the 1800's and in England "original speculation of any kind and mathematical theory in particular were distrusted. Mechanics had been established and exhausted by Newton. Heat was explained in gross by the caloric theory, and on the molecular scale by the vibratory motion of atoms within an aetherial substance, not a fit subject for mathematics" (Truesdell, Essays in the History of Mechanics, 283). ALSO IN THIS VOLUME: J.F.W. Herschel, "On the Action of Crystalliized Bodies on Homogeneous Light, and the Causes of the Deviation from Newton's Scale in the Tints which many of them develop on Exposure to a Polarized Ray". The paper appears in two parts in this volume, pp. 115-132, pp. 161-180. CONDITION & DETAILS: London: C. Baldwin. 4to. [4], viii, 479, [5]. 7 engraved plates. Handsomely rebound in three-quarter calf over marbled paper boards. Five raised bands at the spine; elaborate gilt-tooling in the compartments; gilt lettered at the spine. New endpapers. Bright and exceptionally clean throughout. Near fine condition.

Gascoigne's Princely Pleasures, with the Masque, Intended to Have Been Presented before Queen Elizabeth, at Kenilworth Castle in 1575; with an Introductory Memoir and Notes

London: Printed for J.H. Burn, Maiden-Lane, Covent-Garden; R. Triphook, Old Bond-Street; C. and H. Baldwyn, Newgate-Street; and C. Smith, Strand, 1821. Early nineteenth-century edition of the revels at Kenilworth staged for Elizabeth I, the first separate edition since the 1576 first printing, which is no longer extant. Elizabeth I stayed at Kenilworth, the seat of her childhood friend Lord Dudley, Earl of Leicester, for nineteen days, the longest of any of the visits she granted during her royal processions. In an extravagant effort to impress the queen, and likely in an attempt to win her hand in marriage, Dudley planned an elaborate calendar of entertainments, including hunts, fireworks, and plays. Elizabethan poet and actor George Gascoigne was placed in charge of the performances, which began with a welcome from legendary figures such as the Lady of the Lake and Hercules, "overcome by view of the rare beauty and princely countenance of her Majesty." Gascoigne's own lyrical contributions emphasized Dudley's ancient lineage, connected even to King Arthur, subtly suggesting that Dudley was a worthy match for the queen: "why then they served / King Arthur man of might, / And ever since this castle kept, / for Arthur's heirs by right." The events culminated in a play entitled Zabeta (referencing "Elizabeth"), which boldly argued "how necessary were / for worthy Queens to wed." Learning the thesis of the play, Elizabeth arranged to leave before its performance. Gascoigne's verses, originally printed one year after the revels, would themselves influence the likes of Philip Sidney and Ben Jonson. The last known copy of the 1576 edition was destroyed in a fire in 1879. This 1821 edition is the first obtainable separate edition of Princely Pleasures, published the same year as Walter Scott's bestselling novel Kenilworth: A Romance, for which the 1575 revels serve as the setting. A near-fine copy. Twelvemo, contemporary full green pebbled morocco, spine lettered in gilt, boards decoratively ruled in gilt and blind, cornerpieces stamped in blind, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, green silk ribbon marker. Frontispiece portrait of Gascoigne. Introduction, biography, and bibliography of Gascoigne at front; glossary and notes at rear. Ink ownership inscription dated 1867 to front fly leaf. Spine uniformly toned and slightly rubbed, light scattered spotting to boards, hint of foxing to frontispiece.

Memnon, Antigone und Oedip, v. J. Mayrhofer, und Am Grabe Anselmo's von Claudius. Für eine Singstimme mit Piano-Forte in Musik gesetzt [...] 6tes Werk. Vienna, Diabelli und Comp., [1821].

1821. Oblong folio. 11 pp. Engraved throughout. First edition with Schubert's autograph checkmark ("Sch[ubert] m[anu] p[ropria] 220") on last page and printed dedication to the Austrian theater director Michael Vogl. Much rarer than Schubert's first publication ("Erlkönig"), published the same year: no copy in international auction records. Usually, Schubert's autograph checkmarks on his early works are strongly trimmed in the descenders; in the present copy, however, the ckeckmark is entirely untouched by the binder's knife. In the last copy of Schubert's Opus 6 to appear in the trade (Schneider 282 [1985], 128), the checkmark was almost entirely trimmed away. - The fact that the checkmarks are in Schubert's own hand has been disputed (cf. E. Hilmar, "Anmerkungen zu Schuberts Erstdrucken", in: Florilegium Musicologicum 1988, 145-154); however, Drüner has made a strong case for their authenticity: "The problem is indeed more complicated for opuses 1-7 and 96, and in these cases Hilmar's refusal is too categorical. His main arguments are not correct [...] It is almost certain that on the occasion of the publication of his opus 1-7, Schubert proudly followed the examples given to him by Johann Nepomuk Hummel, who signed his opuses [...] Hummel and Schubert were pupils of Salieri who taught both of them the highest editorial precision. Therefore, the idea of signing definitely came from Schubert [...]" (Otto Haas, cat. 40 [2003], p. 16). For a comparison of handwriting cf. the paraphs pictured by Drüner on p. 16 (Schubert's hand, identical with ours) and 17 (by another hand). Also cf. the included illustration of Schubert's identical paraph on his Opus 4 ("Brahms himself identifies Schubert's hand on his copy of 'Der Wanderer' [...]", Sotheby's, 17 May 2002, lot 169]. - Clean, entirely untrimmed copy. Extremely rare thus. Deutsch 541, 542, 504. Hirsch IV, 479.
