Journal of a Voyage for the Discovery of a Northwest Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific; Performed in the years 1818-1820, in His Majesty's Ships Hecla and Griper? With an Appendix Containing the Scientific and Other Observations

London: John Murray, 1821. Second Edition. 4to (10 3/4x8 1/4), period marbled boards, rebacked with calf spine, spine label, illustrated with 14 aquatint or engraved plates, 6 charts & maps (4 of them folding), [8], xxix, [3], 310, [2], clxxix, [1], + [1] ad pp. Lacks errata slip present in the first edition, minor wear to old boards, light offset to some of the charts, old library label on front pastedown. A very nice clean copy. Handsome second edition of Parry's (1790-1855) first voyage seeking the Northwest Passage. This edition contains lots of information and illustrations about the journey that took place between May 1819 and October 1820. In Seeking a Northwest Passage the Hecla and Griper commanded by Parry "sailed up Baffin Bay, through the Lancaster Sound and the Barrow Strait to the south side of Melville Island where they wintered (Winter Harbour), and returned to England by the same route the next year. The expedition discovered and penetrated a short distance into Prince Regent's Inlet, discoverred Banks Island, and surveyed the south shores of Barrow Strait." Parry gives a lot of detail about all the discoveries, and how he prepared the ship for wintering. He even talks about scurvy and snow blindness, and in one of the appendices gives the reader a feel for the daily work routine. Arctic Bibliography 13145.

Autograph Letter regarding Pendulum experiments in S. America

London: Edward Sabine, 1821 Sabine, General Sir Edward [1788-1883]. Autograph Letter regarding Pendulum experiments in S. America. 1 1/2 pages on beige stock folded to 4" 1/2 x 7" in very good condition [tear where the seal was removed]. Addressed to Mr. J. Brande Esq., London House, n. d. (Friday morning) circ 1821-22. Sabine was an astronomer, geophysicist, ornithologist and explorer born in Dublin, he studied at Marlow & the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich, was commissioned in the Royal Artillery, & served until 1877, retiring as a General. He was appointed astronomer on John Ross's expedition to find the Northwest Passage [1919] & on Parry's Arctic expedition [1819-20[. He conducted valuable pendulum experiments to determine the shape of the Earth at Spitzbergen and in tropical Africa [1821-3], & devoted the rest of his life to work on terrestrial magnetism, discovering a relationship between sunspots and magnetic disturbances of the earth. He was elected president of the Royal Society, 1861. "Dear Mr Brande / Any day which you will name next week will suit me equally and I will be much pleased at meeting Mr. McDonich. / I expect a letter from Correa this [morning] recommending Para or the S. American coast as the most suitable spot for the Pendulum Orb. His authority is very good. I believe that there is o be a letter from the royal Society to the Admty on the subject, if so it might be reasonable that you [if you have the letter to write] I have Correa's letter. Shall I send to you for such purposes & wheres. / Yours Ever Most Truly / Edward Sabin / Friday Morg." In 1821, Sabine turned his attention to the science of geodesy, which had already engaged his attention during the first of his Arctic voyages, and in particular the determination of the length of the seconds pendulum. By measuring the length of a seconds pendulum in different latitudes, one can calculate the "oblateness" of the Earth - i.e. the degree to which the "figure of the Earth" departs from perfect sphericity. Attempts to do this had been made in the eighteenth century, but it was not until Sabine's lifetime that precision instruments were available to allow sufficiently accurate measurements to be made. Sabine threw himself into the task with his usual diligence. Between 1821 and 1823 he travelled halfway around the world with his pendulums and carried out innumerable measurements on the intertropical coasts of Africa and the Americas. He also returned to the Arctic, journeying up the eastern coast of Greenland with Captain D Clavering on Parry's old ship the Griper. Observations were made at Little Pendulum Island, in latitude 74° 30', and among the snows of Spitsbergen. Sabine even had an island named in his honour during this expedition. The results of his research were published "The Pendulum and other experiments", in 1825. They represented the most accurate assessment of the figure of the earth that had ever been made. $1275. Signed by Author. Original Autographed Letters & Documents.

An Historical Account of the Colony of New South Wales

London,: Rudolph Ackermann,, 1821.. Folio, with a map and 12 engraved plates, six of them large and folding, the other six full-page; complete with half-title; frontispiece a little thumbed, expert paper repairs to one folding plate, occasional light foxing yet a very good copy with large margins in later deep brown morocco with gilt spine lettering. A fine copy of the first view book engraved in Australia, an extraordinary collaboration between Major James Wallis, then commander of the convict settlement at Newcastle, and the convicts under his command, notably Walter Preston and Joseph Lycett. The illustrations for Wallis' celebrated and beautiful view book show in great detail scenes in Sydney, Newcastle, and the Hawkesbury River, as well as an Aboriginal corroboree, kangaroos and black swans. In many ways the series represents a celebration of the progress of the colony under Governor Macquarie, and Macquarie himself was very taken with the work. Two of the central figures in the creation of the book were Preston and Lycett; Preston had earlier worked with Absalom West on his famous views of Sydney, while the latter had only recently been sent to Newcastle after his involvement in the forging of bank drafts in Sydney. At the time, Newcastle enjoyed a fearsome reputation for brutal secondary punishment and was described by Lieutenant Purcell as "the Hell of New South Wales."Wallis had arrived in the colony in 1814 and proved a successful commandant at Newcastle, transforming the shabby convict outpost into an ordered town, mirroring on a smaller scale what Macquarie had achieved in Sydney. Wallis was not a stern disciplinarian, yet seemed to motivate the convicts under his command by virtue of his tireless energy and enthusiasm. He focused the considerable artistic skills of the forgers to produce this series of skilled and remarkable views of the colony: Preston was tasked with working upon the only copper sheets available, intended for sheathing the hulls of ships, a difficult material softer than standard engraving copper. Past historians asserted that Wallis put his name to landscape studies executed by Joseph Lycett for the purpose of publishing this book. However, drawings and watercolours by Wallis that have surfaced in recent times prove that he indeed was the artist. Both Preston and Lycett were pardoned by Macquarie on Wallis' recommendation, in no small part because of their work on this book. When Wallis departed Australia in 1819 he took the plates with him to London where this book was published by Ackermann, complete with an introductory history of the colony and a map of Port Macquarie by the surveyor John Oxley. This is an example of the more complete issue with the addition by the publisher of a preliminary leaf containing extracts from the Sydney Gazette in praise of Wallis' success as commandant of the Newcastle settlement.Butler, Printed images in colonial Australia 1801-1901, pp. 50-59; Ferguson, 842; Wantrup, 217b.

Published by John Murray, London First Edition 1821. London 1821. First edition hard back binding in contemporary half dark maroon leather covers, morocco gilt title and author lettering to the spine with five gilt ships between the bands, marble paper covered boards, page edges and end papers. 4to 11'' x 9''. Contains [xxix] [1 leaf] 310 [1 leaf] clxxix [1], without the tipped-in errata slip. 6 engraved maps and charts [4 folding] and 14 plates [including 9 aquatints], folding table, text diagrams. Rubbing to the edges and ends, some foxing and offsetting from plates, damp stain to the inside edge of the title page which has left a light bloom to the bottom margin of the first 30 pages, binding firm and tight. His 1819 voyage through the Parry Channel was probably the most successful in the long quest for the Northwest Passage. In 1827 he attempted one of the earliest expeditions to the North Pole. He reached 82°45' North latitude, setting the record for human exploration farthest North that stood for nearly five decades before being surpassed at 83°20'26 by Albert Hastings Markham in 1875-1876.         A Flora of North America, illustrated by coloured figures drawn from nature

Philadelphia: Vol. I: M. Carey & Sons; Vol. II & III: H.C. Carey & I. Lea, 1821-1822-1823. 3 volumes, quarto. (10 1/2 x 8 3/4 inches). 106 uncoloured engraved plates (1 folding), from drawings by the author, by Cornelius Tiebout (29), G.B. Ellis (32), F. Kearney (23), J. Boyd (7), J. Drayton (6), C. Goodman (6), Jacob J. Plocher (2), and J.L. Frederick (1). (Plate 63 in vol. II bound as two plates, small rust hole in plate 80 in vol.III, half-titles lacking). Contemporary red morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, the flat spine divided into unequal compartments by two pairs of fillets, lettered in the second and numbered in the fourth compartments, the others elaborately decorated in gilt (scuffed, hinges weak or splitting). Very rare uncoloured issue of an important American flora, "magnificently illustrated" (DAB) with "Plates [that] are clear, soft and lovely" (Bennett). The work includes the first successful use of stipple- engraving in the United States. This set includes the rare 'To Subscribers' leaf in Volume II. In addition to its significance as a botanical work, Barton's Flora... is also one of the most important early colour plate books entirely produced in the United States. "The plates were made by [among others] Cornelius Tiebout, the first really skilled engraver born in the United States, although he trained in London for two years in the 1790's to perfect his technique" (Reese). This uncoloured issue is particularly interesting as Barton states in the advertisement to the first volume that some of the "plates are printed in colour" - none of the plates in the present volume show any signs of colour and are therefore a variant issue of those used in the coloured version, and not merely plates that were not hand-coloured in this country. These may constitute early experimental issues of the plates - produced before the combination of colour-printing and hand-colouring was arrived at. The text gives details of each species, its Latin binomial, common name, and class and order according to the Linnaean system, followed by interesting information about the history of the discovery of the species and details about its geographical range. Barton, the nephew of Benjamin Smith Barton, was appointed a naval surgeon in 1809 and remained on the Navy's list throughout his life (he was buried with full military honours in Philadelphia in 1856). "In 1815 Barton was chosen professor of botany at the University of Pennsylvania, charming many with his light-hearted herborizing trips along the Schuykill and his lectures which were, contrary to bookish times, demonstrated in his well-stocked conservatory" (DAB). His botanical publications, which appeared over a relatively short span of nine years, began with his Flora Philadelphicae prodromus (1815) and culminated with the present work (1820-24) and his Vegetable materia medica of the United States (1817-19). BM(NH) I, p.105; Bennett p. 9 (incorrect plate count); Dunthorne 26; Nissen BBI 84; MacPhail Benjamin Smith Barton and William Crillon Barton 19; Meisel III, p.385; Pritzel 446; Reese Stamped with a National Character 11; Sabin 3858; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 236.

A FLORA OF NORTH AMERICA. ILLUSTRATED BY COLOURED FIGURES, DRAWN FROM NATURE

Philadelphia: Vol. I: M. Carey & Sons; Vol. II & III: H.C. Carey & I. Lea, 1821/1822/1823.. Three volumes. "To Subscribers" leaf in Vol. II. 106 engraved plates (two folding), from drawings by the author, by Cornelius Tiebout (29), G.B. Ellis (32), F. Kearney (23), J. Boyd (7), J. Drayton (6), C. Goodman (6), Jacob J. Plocher (2), and J.L. Frederick (1). Half title in each volume. Quarto. Contemporary red half morocco over green/blue paper-covered boards, the flat spines divided into five compartments by double gilt fillets, lettered in gilt in the second and fourth compartments. Plate 80 in second volume with contemporary replacement of inner margin. Very good. Provenance: Owen Mason (of Rhode Island, 1796-1873, ownership inscriptions dated 1841 noting a purchase price of $8.00). An important American flora, "magnificently illustrated" (DAB) with "Plates [that] are clear, soft and lovely" (Bennett). The work, found here in its rare uncolored state, includes the first successful use of stipple- engraving in the United States. "The plates were made by [amongst others] Cornelius Tiebout, the first really skilled engraver born in the United States, although he trained in London for two years in the 1790s to perfect his technique" - Reese. The text gives details of each species, its Latin binomial, common name, and class and order according to the Linnean system, followed by interesting information about the history of the discovery of the species and details about its geographical range. The present set is particularly desirable, as it includes the rare "To Subscribers" leaf occasionally found in the second volume, here bound between pages 42 and 43. It was issued as a pair to pages 41/42, but it is not included in the pagination and was designed to be discarded. Like many other works of its day, Barton's book was originally issued in parts, with the first parts appearing in 1820 and the final ones in 1824, hence the dates given above. This set is notable for having the plates uncolored. Barton states in the advertisement to the first volume that some of the "plates are printed in color, and are afterwards colored by hand. It is confidently believed by the author, that they will be found the most successful attempts at imitation by sound engraving, of the French style, yet made in this country." He goes on to note that the method of color printing was the result of "repeated experiments" owing "to the impossibility of obtaining information as to the manner of colouring abroad." The present copy would belie Barton's assertion, as none of the plates are colored. MacPhail also contradicts Barton's claim, noting that a copy at the Sterling Morton Library at the Morton Arboretum contains "no evidence of color printing at all in any of the plates. BM (NH) I, p.105. BENNETT, p.9 (incorrect plate count). DUNTHORNE 26. NISSEN (BBI) 84. MacPHAIL, BENJAMIN SMITH BARTON AND WILLIAM CRILLON BARTON 19. MEISEL III, p.385. PRITZEL 446. Havell after A. Pugin and J. Glendall. Uncut. Original publisher's wrappers bound in. This River reflects, in its earlier stream, the most striking views of metropolitan grandeur; and, as it proceeds, Nature has been most lavish in beautiful pictures on its banks, and presents, in its course, a succession of objects, whose landscape enrichments are connected with antiquarian circumstances perculiarly interesting to the English Traveller" (prospectus on verso of the wrappers). The work was issued by Ackermann in six parts, each containing four plates, between January and June 1821. Seven hundred and fifty copies were printed on regular paper, at 14s per part, and fifty large-paper copies (like the present), "taken on Atlas Paper" at 21s per part. "Large-paper copies have remarkably brilliant impressions of the plates and are greatly superior to small-paper copies" (Tooley). Parry's first expedition is one of the most memorable of all the Arctic voyages, and made him the most renowned Arctic explorer of his day. When he reached his "Winter Harbour," named Melville Island after the First Lord of the Admiralty, he had travelled further west than any previous seeker for the North-West Passage. He proved Lancaster Sound to be a strait (not closed by mountains as assumed by Ross), a way to the Magnetic Pole was discovered down Prince Regent Inlet; and it was the first voyage to winter intentionally in the Arctic, thus laying down the foundations for all future British attempts on the North West Passage and the Pole. The voyage "practically settled the question of a connection between the two oceans. Great discoveries were made, and important scientific observations were recorded...." (Markham)

Leghorn from the Convent of Montenero

Taken from the travel notebook of an english admiral, William Paget, who called them ?Sketches in the South of France, Coast of Italy, Rome, Elba and Lombardy, Lake of Como and Maggiore in the years 1819-20-21? as can be seen from his own handwriting. These works present views of the Liguria region, parts of Tuscany (especially the island of Elba), and a large number dedicated to the lakes of Lombardy. The artistic quality is not the same for all of these water-colours and their author is more interested in the natural scenery than in representing people. It can be seen that they were created by an amateur painter and their greatest interest lies in their iconographical an decorative values. From the point of view of artistic techiniques these works were created by first making a preliminary drawing with a pencil, usually on thick laid paper (typically used in early nineteenth-century England), and then painting it with water-colours. Since these works come in different sizes, the notebooks originally might have been more than one. ? ? 590 205

De l'emploi du Chalumeau dans les analyses chimiques et les déterminations minéralogiques. Traduit du Suédios par F. Fresnel.

Paris, Méquignon-Marvis, 1821. 8vo (200 x 125 mm). pp. (2), vi, 396, (4), with 4 folding engraved plates. Contemporary calf (old repair to upper hinge, lower hinge splitting). First French edition. The original Swedish edition was published in 1820. This is the classic work on the use of the blowpipe in determinative mineralogy, by the famous Swedish chemist Jöns Jacob Berzelius (1779-1848). When Berzelius started his work on chemical analysis the scientific apparatus and reagents available in Sweden were very inadequate. He was especially skillful in the use of the blowpipe which had been developed in the Scandinavian countries. The new forms of apparatus that he built were described in this textbook and became standard pieces of equipment in laboratories all over the world. These apparatus allowed him to improve the accuracy of qualitative and quantitative analysis, as well as to introduce many new methods. He utilised the blowpipe in many of his analytical procedures, and this book popularised its use abroad. Berzelius concluded from his analytical experience that a logical classification of minerals could be based only on chemical composition. The first French edition was translated by F. Fresnel from the original Swedish edition. The first part of the book describes the blowpipe and tests. The second part is a comprehensive systematic description of minerals including their behaviour under the blowpipe. The plates show apparatus which Berzelius build, including cross-sections of the blowpipe and other chemical apparatus. Wellcome II, p. 157; Cole 137.

$1275.         Marriage A-la-mode.

. The complete suite of six prints with the image of each measuring 14" x 17" with the title engraved within the plate lines below each image. This suite of prints is from the 1821 restrike by Thomas Cooke. Rich with Hogarth's characteristic allegory and satire, this suite of engravings depicts the "marriage a la mode" (an arranged marriage for the mutual profit of the parents) between the vainglorious son of the bankrupt Lord Squanderfield and the unwilling daughter of a rich merchant. The unhappy union, fraught with mutual despairs and adulteries, and its tragic end are vividly recounted. Each engraving has been professionally cleaned, deacidified, and matted in acid-free materials ready for framing. These images are clean, clear and bright and will provide hours of pleasurable study of Hogarth's observations and satiric commentary of eighteenth century English society at about one-third of the cost of the original impressions of 1735. Paulson 228-233.
