Some dust tanning at extended edges, a few soft creases and light spots of soiling, but a very good copy. Full morocco slipcase and chemise. First edition, published anonymously, and one of Shelley's scarcest later publications. This copy has the title in the form with the colon after the main title. The lady addressed in the subtitle, Emilia Viviani, is generally regarded as the motivation for the poem's completion rather than its original inspiration, as Grannis quotes Richard Garnett's observation that the poem was in its first draft before Shelley made her acquaintance. It was long asserted that the edition consisted of only one hundred copies, but recent scholarship suggests a modestly larger edition, perhaps on the order of three hundred copies. GRANNISS, pp.65-7. Errata slip pasted on verso of dedication leaf. With an ALs from Parry to Roger Kenison, Clerk to the Corporation of Guardians, Norwich, dated 23 June 1835, with conjugate address panel and seal, tipped in at front. Bookplate of Henry A. De Long on front pastedown. Slight wear to board edges, frontispiece chart rather clumsily folded, very occasional spotting and offsetting, withal a very good copy. First edition of the account of the first of Parry's three attempts at the north-west passage. On this attempt he reached longitude 110° West, earning the reward of £5,000 that had been offered by parliament for the first ship to reach that meridian, and was frozen in ice for ten months. He also discovered Melville Island and others of the Parry Islands, having first explored and named Barrow Strait, Prince Regent Inlet and Wellington Channel. "The immediate achievements of these voyages were the charting of hundreds of miles of coastline in the Canadian Arctic archipelago and the collecting of valuable data on Arctic natural history" (Hill). Parry returned a hero; John Murray paid him a thousand guineas for the rights to publish this account.

First appearance in French of this landmark paper in electromagnetism. The present paper is a translation into French of Faraday's seminal paper "On some New Electro-Magnetical Motions, and on the Theory of Magnetism", which was originally published on October 21 in "The Quaterly Journal of Science", between one and two months before the present French version, which was published in "Annales de Chimie et de Physique", in December the same year. The work contains the first published mentioning of the "LINE AND FORCE CONCEPT". Faraday employed a magnet and a wire with a flowing current, caused each separately to rotate round the other, and concluded that a current-carrying wire is surrounded by a circular "line" of magnetic force."Ever since Hans Christian Oersted's announcement of the discovery of electromagnetism in the summer of 1820, editors of scientific journals had been inundated with articles on the phenomenon...Inspired by the editor of Philosophical Magazine, Richard Phillips, Faraday agreed to undertake a short historical survey but he did so reluctantly, since his attention was focused on problems of chemistry rather remote from electromagnetism. His entusiasm was aroused in September 1821, when he turned to the investigation of the peculiar nature of the magnetic force created by an electrical current. Oersted had spoken of the "electric conflict" surrounding the wire and had noted that "this conflict performs circles", but this imprecise description had had little impact upon Faraday. Yet as he experimented he saw precisely what was happening. Using a small magnetic needle to map the pattern of magnetic force, he noted that one of the poles of the needle turned in a circle as it was carried around the wire. He immediately realized that a single magnetic pole would rotate unceasingly around the current-carrying wire so long as the current flowed. He then set about devising an instrument to illustrate this effect...and so his experiment records the FIRST CONVERSION OF ELECTRICAL INTO MECHANICAL ENERGY.         Extraordinary archive of large-scale manuscript maps and topographic views of French Guiana, accomplished by important French artists accompanying Baron Pierre-Bernard Milius to the remote region

      [French Guiana: 1821-1824]. Together, 12 manuscript maps and views, plus one engraved map. Provenance: Baron Pierre-Bernard Milius (1773-1829). A fine manuscript cartographic record of Baron Milius's scheme to establish a settlement near the mouth of the river Mana on the far west coast of French Guiana, including survey work by Auguste Vaillant. "Milius first went to sea in 1786 on his father's merchant ships. He joined the navy in 1793 and in 1800, as 'lieutenant de vaisseau' (lieutenant commander), was appointed to the Australian Expedition of Nicolas Thomas Baudin. He served as [Jacques] Hamelin's second-in-command on the Naturaliste and at Timor in 1801 was promoted 'capitaine de frigate' (commander)" (Howgego M44). The importance of the Baudin Expedition cannot be overstated. The 1800-1803 French expedition was the first to survey the western coast and much of the southern coast of Australia. The Expedition harbored at Sydney from the end of April to mid-November 1802. On the return, Baudin died of illness and command passed to Milius, who successfully brought the expedition back to France. Milius subsequently served as director of the port of Venice, returning to France in 1814; "after the restoration of the monarchy in 1815 [he] was appointed director of the port of Brest. He subsequently served as governor of Reunion (1818-21) and Guiana (1823-25), and in 1827 commanded the Scipion at the Battle of Navarino" (Howgego). Milius's service as governor of French Guiana was of particular importance. Originally settled by France in the 17th century, the South American tropical region had been seized by Portugal in 1809. After its restoration to France, a renewed movement began to colonize the area. Milius himself would be influential in seeking to create a penal colony at Mana and to oversee numerous surveys of the region to determine the feasibility and best places for colonization. The present archive, from the collection of Baron Milius, dates from his time as the colonial governor of French Guiana and includes several magnificent, large-scale maps and views, including a masterful manuscript plan of Cayenne, as well as important manuscript maps of Mana and the Maroni River by Auguste Nicolas Vaillant (1793-1837). Together, this collection represents a stunning visual record of the culmination of Milius's storied career. Original primary source, manuscript material from Grand Voyage expeditions is of the utmost rarity and almost exclusively exists in French institutions. Such material that does appear on the market is seldom able to leave France. These newly-discovered drawings, from a critical period of French exploration, are of great historical value. The collection is comprised of: 1) Auguste Nicolas VAILLANT (1793-1837). Pen, ink and wash original manuscript map titled 'Plan de la Partie du Maroni, Comprise Entre Son Embouchure Et le Parallêle Situé par 5 [degrees] 7'.46". de latde. N., Dressé par Augte. Niclo. Vaillant Ensgne. de Vau., pendant Son Voyage dant Ce Fleuve, pour le Service de la Commission Explorative de la Guyanne Française'. [French Guiana: 1824]. Pen and black ink with grey watercolor wash on early 19th-century laid paper, ('M' in a shield watermark, with 'M' countermark). Sheet size: 39 1/4 x 25 1/2 inches. An attractive record of an important early survey of the border between French Guiana and Surinam. Auguste Vaillant served as 'aide de camp' to Baron Milius and would subsequently command a voyage of circumnavigation aboard the corvette Bonite. He produced this detailed record of soundings and observations about habitation and natural features and hazards on the Rio Maroni: the importance of the work was recognised and he produced a 'memoir' describing the exploration. The Maroni which up until this survey was virtually unknown, served then and now as French Guiana's border with Surinam on the west bank. The area surveyed includes a 'Grand village Parêtlaii' on the approximate site of present-day Saint-Laurent du Maroni. As the title makes clear, this map was one of the results of an extensive survey carried out for the commission commanded by Baron Milius to explore French Guiana. 2) Auguste Nicolas VAILLANT (1793-1837). A beautifully-finished plan showing the proposed new layout for the capital, apparently following the plans drawn up by the surveyor Sirdey, the 'arpenteur royal.' This plan marks the moment when Cayenne became a modern colonial capital, and is a fascinating and important document in the history of the development of Cayenne. The proposed expansion was only possible because of the amount of land that had been reclaimed by the engineering works which began in 1777. Using convict labour, the draining of the marshy land around the old town and the resulting Canal Laussat (shown on this plan) was also finished in 1821. The Old Town ("Ancienne Ville") lies at left; the New Town ("Nouveau Ville") at right. It is interesting to note how much of the lay out suggested here is still in existence, although very few of the streets have retained their names - the 'Rue de Choiseuil' is now the 'Avenue du général de Gaulle', for instance. 4) Captain BONNE. Montulé appears to have first visited North America at the time of the Revolution. In vol. I he relates, in letter form, a voyage from September 1816 to October 1817, from New York to the West Indies, with stops in St. Thomas, Jamaica, and Santo Domingo, and returning north via New Orleans and the Mississippi to the Ohio river regions and the Hudson valley. "The account is significant because it relates Montulé's experiences during his journey up the Mississippi on board the Vesuvius, which is said to have been the third steamboat to ply the waters of the Mississippi. The boat and its navigation are described in detail. Another distinguishing feature of the narrative is the information it contains about Frenchmen in the United States, especially Napoleonic refugees..." - Clark, Travels in the New South, II, 47. The remaining volumes describe his travels in Sicily and Egypt. In his foreword Montulé states that he "never would have published these letters without the help of lithography," whose ease of execution convinced him to share with the public some of the sketches he had made in his travels. He apologizes for not having made use of eminent artists, as the cost would have rendered the work too expensive. In fact his lithographs are very fine, full of carefully observed detail, and extremely important for their early date: a number of Montulé's plates are in fact lithographic "firsts," notably plate 3, the fine view of New York seen from the west, which appears to be THE EARLIEST LITHOGRAPHED VIEW OF NEW YORK CITY. It is the earliest view of New York listed by John Reps, whose union catalogue of American city views purports to list all separately published lithographic city views of America. Other plates which are among the first of their kind include a depiction of the skeleton of a mammoth in the Philadelphia Museum, views of Philadelphia itself, a group of unidentified Native Americans of the Mississippi region, an "encounter with a rattlesnake on the bank of the Ohio River", and two views of Niagara Falls. Montulé's lithographs have been somewhat neglected in the standard repertories of early American prints and bibliographies of American travel books: his prints predate by several years more celebrated collections of French lithographic views of America, such as Milbert's Itinéraire pittoresque du Fleuve Hudson, published in 1828-1829, as well as any American-produced examples. (The first lithographic press in the United States was established in New York City in 1822, by Barnet & Doolittle; their earliest recorded production was a series of botanical illustrations from Muhlenberg's 1822 Grammar of Bota.       London:: Boosey and Sons, 1821 FIRST ENGLISH EDITION of part 1 of "Faust" & one of the earliest translations of any part of Goethe's Masterpiece into English. In the original drab boards. Though uncredited, the translation was executed by Coleridge. 8vo. viii + 86pp. + index of engravings after Moritz Retzsch by Henry Moses which were issued separately by Boosey in a slightly larger format. This volume is with Title Page but missing the Portrait frontis. Which was excised very early on. 1 folding plate. The earliest version of any part of Goethe's "Faust" dates from 1813 when a fragment appeared in Mmme de Stael's GERMANY. An uncredited translation of another fragment, possibly by J.C. Morgan, was printed in "Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine" in 1820, the same year as the Retzsch portfolio. Later, married copies of the illustrations & text volume sometimes appear bound together. THIS VOLUME IS THE FIRST COMPLETE TRANSLATION OF PART I. Some light wear to the spine; a uniform very, very light damp staining to the lower margin throughout. This first edition of the text volume in the original boards is quite rare. "Coleridge began, but soon abandoned, the translation in 1814, returning to the task in 1820. At Coleridge's own insistence, it was published anonymously in 1821, illustrated with 27 line engravings copied by Henry Moses after the original plates by Moritz Retzsch. His publisher, Thomas Boosey, brought out another edition in 1824. Although several critics recognized that it was Coleridge's work, his role as translator was obscured because of its anonymous publication. Coleridge himself declared that he 'never put pen to paper as translator of Faust', and subsequent generations mistakenly attributed the translation to George Soane, a minor playwright, who had actually commenced translating for a rival press." Three quarters leather over marbled boards, gilt bands on spine, brown endpapers, includes original map in Volume 1 (it has a little light foxing and one marginal 5mm closed tear but is otherwise in very good condition). 398pp (foldout map at front and 5 plates), 368pp (2 plates), 372pp (4 plates), 304pp (1 plate plus foldout table at rear), 472pp (2 plates), 503pp (6 plates), 462pp (3 plates plus foldout table at rear). Internally in very good condition, just a little age spotting, mostly confined to endpapers and plates. Externally the spines are rubbed, volume 7 has a 3cm by 2cm surface chip at the spine tail and a tear near the spine head and is cracked along front joint (front board still attached but is working loose). One or two pages per volume have minor chips to margins, not affecting text. Overall an attractive set, complete with map and all plates. Packed weight 5kg.. Three-Quarter Leather. [with:] [MANUSCRIPT LETTER, SIGNED, FROM JOHN ADAMS TO DANIEL WEBSTER]. Dec. 23, 1821. [2]pp. with integral address leaf. In a half morocco and cloth clamshell case, in two cloth chemises. A presentation copy, inscribed by Daniel Webster on the titlepage: "Mr. Webster desires Mr. Boylston's acceptance of this, with his regards." This copy is beautifully bound in red straight-grained morocco, tooled in gilt on the boards and the spine, presumably bound for Boylston to signify it as a special copy. Accompanying the pamphlet is a remarkable letter from John Adams, second president of the United States, congratulating Webster on the speech and lauding him as the greatest orator of the time. Webster presented the pamphlet to Ward Nicholas Boylston (1749-1828), member of a prominent Boston family and a cousin of John Adams. Born in Boston, Boylston spent some twenty-five years in London engaged in various lines of trade, before returning to the United States in 1800 and settling in Princeton. He endowed a chair at Harvard in Rhetoric and Oratory, with the condition that John Quincy Adams would be installed as professor. The long and laudatory oration celebrates the bicentennial of the landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth in 1620 and the rise of the nation which grew from this seed. Webster's primary theme is the American Revolution and the principles of American democracy. Addressed to "the true sons of New England," it is a clear statement of Webster's political stance, in which he frames his views as the proper successor to the New England founders, most particularly John Adams. This includes his determined opposition to slavery and its spread, just tested in the debates over the Missouri Compromise in 1820. Discussing reaction to the Revolution, at one point he calls Edmund Burke "the most consummate orator of modern times." But his greatest praise is reserved for John Adams, whom Webster calls "...one who has been attended through life by a great and fortunate genius...among the most able and zealous defenders of the violated rights of his country," and other warm praises running for three pages. To John Adams, second president of the United States, one of the few surviving signers of the Declaration of Independence, and arguably the most important figure in the Revolution from Massachusetts, the speech rang true, and not only for its towering praise of himself. He wrote a laudatory letter of thanks to Webster, the very letter which accompanies this pamphlet. The letter, dated Dec. 23, 1821, is in the hand of an unknown secretary (for reasons made clear in the letter), but signed by Adams in a shaky eighty-five-year- old hand. In it he praises Webster for his ability as an historian and orator, and for his stand on slavery. It is a remarkable passing of the torch from one great American leader to another. Adams writes: "Thank you for your Discourse delivered at Plymouth on the termination of the second century of the landing of our Forefathers. Unable to read it from defect of sight, it was last night read to me by our friend Shaw. It is the effort of a great mind richly stored with every species of information. If there be an American who can read it without tears, I am not that American. It enters more perfectly into the genuine spirit of New England than any production I ever read. The observations on the Greeks and Romans, on colonization in general, on the West India Islands, on the past present and future in America of the Slave trade, are sagacious profound and affecting to a high degree. "Mr. Burke is no longer entitled to the praise, 'the most consummate orator of modern times.' "What can I say of what regards myself - To my humble name exegisti monumentum aere marmore et audio perennieus [a slightly misspelled reference to Horace: 'I have built a monument more lasting than marble or bronze']. "This oration will be read five hundred years hence, ought to be read at the end of every Century, and indeed at the end of every year. This view from the Pont Neuf, which cuts across the tail of the Ile de la Cité, presents a spectacular panorama of the city up-stream from Notre Dame: to the right is the Louvre with trees of the Tuileries gardens just visible beyond, of the two bridges, one is a foot-bridge giving easy access to the Louvre, and beyond the more substantial structure of the Pont Royal. In the foreground there is much activity on the river: a makeshift barge balanced with barrels is poled downriver, to the left a more traditional craft is about to pass out of view, in the mid- ground the establishments of the washerwomen can be seen, clothes hang out to dry while the next batch of laundry is scrubbed in the river. Pugin (1762-1832) `architect, archæologist, and architectural artist, was born in France, and claimed descent from a distinguished French family. Driven from his country either by the horrors of the revolution or by private reasons connected with a duel, he came to London about 1798, and soon found employment as a draughtsman in the office of John Nash…. To increase his powers as an artist, he entered the schools of the Royal Academy… He further revived acquaintance with Merigot, an aquatint engraver, who formerly had been a drawing-master to his father's family, and studied under him with advantage. Nash, who treated his pupils and assistants with great kindness and hospitality, discovered in Pugin a valuable subordinate... The truthfulness of Pugin's drawings in form and colour at once attracted attention. A change was then coming over water-colour art. The old style of brown or Indian ink outline with a low-toned wash was giving way to the more modern practice of representation in full colour, and Pugin, though he limited his palette to indigo, light red, and yellow ochre, was an active supporter of the new movement, and to his influence its ultimate predominance was largely due. In 1808 Pugin was elected an associate of the Old Water-colour Society, which had been founded in 1805, and he was a frequent exhibitor at the annual exhibitions held first in Lower Brook Street and subsequently in Pall Mall… About the same time Pugin was employed on Ackermann's publications, notably the 'Microcosm,' for which he supplied the architectural portions of the illustrations, Rowlandson executing the figures. ….Meanwhile Nash and his works were not altogether neglected. Pugin in 1824 was asked to make the drawings for a volume illustrating the Brighton Pavilion, and while he was engaged upon the work George IV, who came to watch, accidentally upset the colour-box, and, mindful perhaps of illustrious parallels in the past, picked it up with an apology that greatly gratified the artist.` (DNB). The present separately issued plate led to a latter publication `Views of Paris and Environs,' (London: 1828-1831), with plates of similar subjects but published in a much smaller quarto format.

The scarce first edition of Saint-Simon's important main work of economy, which has exercised an enormous influence on modern political and economic thought, directly inspiring and influencing such thinkers as Marx, Proudhon, Comte, Durkheim etc.The present copy has belonged to the Hungarian Count Széchenyi István and bears his name in own hand on the half-title. Gróf Széchenyi István (1791 -1860) was a famous politician, theorist and writer and is considered one of the greatest statesmen in the history of Hungary.The French social philosopher and reformer Claude Henri de Rouvroy, Comte de Saint-Simon (1760-1825), was the historic founder of French socialism, and one of the founders of modern industrial socialism and evolutionary sociology. His ideas, although not very well structured or systematic, were of the utmost importance to 19th century thought, both political, philosophical, economic, social, and religious, and an actual cult developed around his ideas, bearing the name of "Saint-Simonism". "In the main, this pathological genious -Émile Faguet's "fou très intelligent"- affords only another example that illustrates the difference between a man's importance for a history of economic thought and his importance for a history of economic analysis. Saint-Simon's name stands in the history of economic thought because of a message of a semi-religious character and because disciples turned this message -not without altering it- into the creed of a sect. Much has been written about Sain-Simon's posthumous success: not only in France but also in England, Germany, and especially in the United States and in Latin America, Saint-Simonist groups emerged and even a Saint-Simonist intellectual fashion of much wider range... Where other humanitarians were sour and doubtful about what sort of a future capitalist industry would provide for humanity at large, Saint-Simon gave comfort. Where other enthusiasts of industrial progress were harsh and unsympathetic, he preached the golden age for all... There is something else, however. Saint-Simon's vision was not implemented by analytic work but nevertheless it is relevant for us in two respects. First, there is a conception of social change that may be said to adumbrate an economic interpretation of history... Second, there is a perception or a glimpse of the true nature of the capitalist process that acquires particular importance from the fact that neither Marx nor his bourgeois peers had it: Saint-Simon saw the pivotal importance of industrial leadership... he did introduce a new factor that might have revolutionized "classic" economics and might have put an end to analytic -as distinguished from normative- equalitarianism." (Schumpeter, History of Economic Analysis, pp. 461-62).In his main work "On the Industrial System", which is a collection of letters, tracts, and brochures, written between June 1820 and January 1821, and continued the following year, Saint-Simon, inspired by his experiences of the French Revolution and by the development of Christianity in the Middle Ages, suggests that the only way forward for a new system is the unity of all the members of society in a general interest of production and by their joint need for security and freedom of exchange, all based on "common moral ideals". A union of national industries must emerge, one which unites the different political forces of industry. The progress of the industrial system presupposed that the struggle between classes that had previously been, would be transformed into a joint struggle against nature, uniting all social classes. In order for the industrial system to succeed, it cannot be one of exploitation, and it must bring to an end the struggle between the workers and the employers, or owners of the machinery of production.Saint-Simon's ideas as to the reconstruction of society were simple but of the grandest influence. Count Széchenyi István was born in Vienna to an old, noble, and influential Hungarian family, linked to other noble families such as the Liechtenstein, the Eszterhazy and the Lobkowitz. The Hungarian National Museum and the Hungarian National Library were founded by István Széchenyi's father, Count Ferenc Széchenyi, and István himself donated the full annual income of his estates for the establishment of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, in 1825. Széchenyi joined the Austrian army and participated in the Napoleonic wars. He left the service as a first lieutenant in 1826, when he pursued his growing interest in politics. Being very aware of the political and economic changes that dominated the rest of Europe and thereby also of the growing difference between these countries and his own, Széchenyi set out to reform his native Hungary as well, causing him to be one of the most influential politicians of his country. To this aim, it is worth noting his interest in Saint-Simon's seminal ideas, which so fundamentally influenced European political thought at the time. Influenced by French and German political and economic theories, Széchenyi condemned the conservatism of the Hungarian nobility, and he encouraged them to give up their feudal privileges, all in an attempt to spark a economical, social and cultural development in Hungary. He contributed creatly to the unification of Buda and Pest and highly influenced the economic situation of Hungary

(DSB). <br/><br/> "Despite the great progress of analysis during the 18th century, foundational questions remained largely unsolved. ... The most influential criticism of the new analysis was put forward by the famous English philosopher George Berkeley [in his pamphlet The Analyst, 1734]. ... Berkeley's criticism was well informed and efficient. Rooted in the tradition of English sensualism, he showed that many definitions in the infinitesimal calculus are paradoxical and cannot be justified by intuition. He explained the success of the new calculus by a repeated neglect of infinitely small quantities leading through a compensation of errors to a correct answer." (Jahnke: A History of Analysis, 127). <br/><br/> "The most authoritative answer to Berkeley came from Maclaurin, one of the most talented of Newton's disciples. Finally he discussed the tides; this part had been previously published (in 1740) and had received a prize from the French Academy." "In 1820 he (Faraday) produced the first known compounds of chlorine and carbon, C2Cl6 and C2Cl4. These compounds had been produced by the substitution of chlorine for hydrogen in "olefiant gas", our modern ethylene. This was the first substitution reaction; such reactions, in the hands of Charles Gerhardt and August Laurent in the 1840's, were to be used as a serious challenge to the dualistic electrochemical theories of J.J.       Paris, Didot, 1821 + Paris, Plassan, 1825. 8vo. Bound uncut in one nice cont. red hcalf with gilt back. Bdg. w. a few traces of use. Some brownspotting. Printed on good paper. Woodcut vignettes to all three title-pages and several text-vignettes in the last work.. First editions of both parts of Beranger's "Chansons". Béranger's famous and influential song appeared in five parts in all, beginning with the "Chansons morales et autres" in 1816. The two present collections constitute part two and three. The first part from 1816 is extremely scarce, but this second part, merely called "Chansons", is probably the most interesting and noteworthy off all the song-collections, as well as being the most comprehensive. "Une édition plus complète parut en 1821, 2 vol. in 18, Paris, Firmin Didot. Cette édition, résultant d´une souscription patronnée par le banquier Laffitte et A.-S. L- Bérard, fut tirée à 10,000 exemplaires; elle fut pursuivie, et l´auteur, quoique habilement défendu par M. Dupin l´aîné , fut condamné á trois mois de prison et á 500 fr. d´amende." (Brunet 1, pp. 781). The author was prosecuted and condemned to imprisonment for three monts because of the appearance of this edition. The two last parts, "Chansons inédites" and "Chansons nouvelles et dernières" appeared in 1828 and 1833. These two collections contain some of the most important of Béranger's songs, among these the influential Napoleonic ones. His songs develloped from being joyous odes into strong satirical and political songs; -"le gouvernement clérical et rétrograde de la Restauration fut particulièrement visé avec une verve mordante et caractéristique. C'est pour cela peut-être qu'il est un des plus grands créateurs de la légende napoléonienne, car il oppose l'époque glorieuse de l'Empire à la mesquinerie qui lui succéda." (Lafont-Bompiani, I:368). His obvoiusly satirical tone partly explains his great political influence at the time, -he is a master of portraying the Bourbon government, clericalism, the old reactionary nobility, and as a contrast the glorious souvenirs of Napoleon. "Voltairienne, sentimentale mais frivole, politique et satirique mais avec simplicité, évitant toute complication de doctrine et toute morale tragique, la poésie de Béranger est la représentation typique de cette première partie du XIXe siècle où la société est encore imbue des moeurs et des idées du XVIIIe et où le romantisme a peine à effacer complètement les formes littéraires et l'esprit de l'ancien régime." Welsford Esq with the affectionate Regards of Wm H Hooper" also The North Georgia Gazette, and Winter Chronicle is also signed on the title page "S L Hodges - from her friend W H Hooper Purser of the Hecla in ….Expedition - now of the ?? 1821" (Unfortunately the pages of the gazette have been cut down to fit with the volume and as such part of this signature and inscription is missing). "Through the long arctic winter, Parry did everything possible to keep his crew occupied. There was constant activity, plays were acted at the 'Royal Arctic Theatre' and Sabine edited a periodical journal, The North Georgia Gazette, and Winter Chronicle" . This periodical was afterwards published by John Murray, and is bound in with this journal. ON THE FIRST VOYAGE Parry was given command of the Hecla and Griper for his first expedition of 1819. Parry sailed up Baffin Bay and through Lancaster Sound and Barrow Strait to the south side of Melville Island, encountering much less heavy ice than anticipated. The expedition over-wintered at Winter Harbour, on the south side of Melville Island. Freeze-up delayed Parry until August of 1820, but he was still able to continue west to Dundas Peninsula and south to Banks Island before turning to head home to England. Parry's voyage was to be recognized as one of the most important in the history of Arctic exploration: he proved that Lancaster Sound opened a passage to the west, he charted a vast area of the unknown Arctic, and proved that it was possible to spend the winter north of the Arctic Circle without being in grave danger. He was also the first to reach 110 degrees west longitude, which earned him and his crew a cash reward of £5,000. [AB 13145]. The Journal, based on Parry's reports, appeared in 1821, after the rights had been bought by the publisher John Murray for the stunning amount of a 1000 guineas. In the same year this second, corrected, edition was published, followed by German, Dutch and French translations. ON THE SECOND VOYAGE " Sent by the Admiralty to search for a passage along the west coast of Foxe Basin, Parry sailed north of Southampton Island instead of south, the route preferred by previous navigators, and thus became the first to sail through Frozen Strait and confirmed Middleton's discovery of Repulse Bay. In late Aug. having found no passage through Repulse Bay, he explored the coast northward, sailing as far as Ross Bay. In Feb. 1822, Eskimos visited the ships' winter quarters on Winter Island and spent much of the winter in the expedition's company, enabling Parry and his men to make detailed observations on their customs and language. After leaving their winter quarters, they explored farther north equiped with Eskimo maps (ESKIMAUX CHART No 1, No 2 & No 3, facing p. 197, 198 and 252) and found the entrance to Fury and Hecla Strait. Ice prevented their passing through it, but overland journeys confirmed that it led westward to a sea. Parry returned to winter quarters and attempted to sail through Fury and Hecla Strait the following summer. Unsuccessful in this attempt, and fearing scurvy, he then returned home. Sabin 58864.

[2] + pp. [291] - 345 + [1] blank. 8vo., sewn printed wrappers, paper spine, front cover bearing title and publication data, inside front cover being an advertisement for the pamphlet and announcing the publication elsewhere of the new edition of Malthus' Principles of Political Economy. The rear cover is blank. There is minor creasing to the bottom corner, and there is occasional neat graphite pencil underlining and margin markings/notes, on only a few pages. Very good overall. All five of Say's letters are included; the translator is not named, but is likely John Richter. See Kress C776 for the (subsequent?) book version, published the same year. Rare.

Pencil note in swedish on first half title that the book was bought at auction in Rome in febr. 1897. Fourth and augmented edition. First published in 1801. The plates shows musical instruments, hair dresses, dancing woman etc. The folding plate in part one depicts the planet constellations and the labour of Hercules. Pierre Chaussard (1766-1823) was a French writer, art-critic, poet, revolutionary (under the name of Publicola), politician and eventually in 1805 professor of belle-lettre at Rouen and Nimes. He took advantage of the interest in ancient Greece aroused by Barthelemy and Lantier to produce this work on the ancient customs and religions, with a touch of the scandalouse. The scarce first edition of Hegel's seminal "The Outline (or later Elements) of the Philosophy of Right", the last of Hegel's major works, which represents the culmination of a life-long interest in politics and political phenomena. Hegel was perhaps more than any other German philosopher influenced by the French Revolution, and this masterpiece of philosophy constitutes a grandiose attempt to make freedom the foundation of human society. "Taken apart from the rest of his system, Hegel's political philosophy has been much misrepresented by totalitarian propagandists. He was, however, one of the most profound and influential thinkers of the nineteenth century. Theology, philosophy, political theory, all have been radically influenced by his system; Strauss (300), Baur (322), Bradley, Kierkegaard (314), Marx (326, 359), Lenin (392), all came under his spell, and his indirect influence has been limitless."
