Execution of Stephen Merrill Clark, Which Took Place on Winter Island.

1821 - An Event That Advanced a Successful Movement to Reduce the Number of Capital Crimes in Massachusetts [Broadside]. [Execution]. [Salem, Massachusetts]. Execution of Stephen Merrill Clark, Which Took Place on Winter Island, Salem, On Thursday, May 10, 1821. Salem, MA?: S.n., 1821. 17-3/4" x 11" broadside. Text in four columns enclosed by black rules, small woodcut of a coffin below headline, untrimmed edges. Light browning, fold lines, a few unobtrusive repairs, a few tiny dampspots. A rare item * In 1820 Clark burned down a barn. There was no loss of life, but he was tried for a capital crime, found guilty and sentenced to death. The jury recommended commutation to no avail. He was sixteen years of age when he committed the crime, seventeen when executed. His case helped to advance a successful movement to reduce the number of capital crimes. By 1852 only murder remained as a capital offense. OCLC locates 4 copies (at Yale Law School, the New-York Historical Society, the Massachusetts Historical Society and the Vermont Historical Society). We located another copy at the American Antiquarian Society. Cohen lists this item but notes that he didn't handle a copy; his entry based on a dealer's catalogue. Cohen also notes another broadside, again unseen, a 16-page pamphlet at Harvard Law School, and a 63-page report of the trial, at Yale Law School. Curiously, there is nothing for Clark in McDade, which is surprising given the contemporary and long-term importance of the case. These omissions in McDade suggest the rarity of these four accounts.         Auswahl vorzüglich schöner, seltener, berühmter, und sonst sehr merkwürdiger Gartenpflanzen, in getreuen Abbildungen.

      - Wien, auf Kosten des Herausgebers, 1821. 4to (238 x 190mm). 2 volumes. pp.xxiv, 148; vi, 97, with 2 engraved portrait frontispieces, one of J. Banks and one of M. Vahl, and 219 fine engraved plates. Contemporary boards. The work was issued with plain or coloured plates. The beautifully engraved plates show among others numerous exotic and bulbous plants. Leopold Trattinnick was the first curator of the botanical Court Cabinet, founded by Francis I, Emperor of Austria. He was a member of a prosperous family and had the means to publish over a period of decades expensive botanical works without regard to costs. The plates of the present work were taken from Trattinnik's never finished 'Archiv der Gewächskunde' for which he had prepared some 800 plates, but which were for the greater part not used for that work.

Cm.21,5x13,3. Pg.(8), XVI, 312; 370. Coperte mute in cartone rigido. Documentos politicos y morales.

Vellum Archery Certificate - Woodmen of Arden

England, 1821. [Meriden, Warwickshire], 25 June 1821. Manuscript Archery Certificate on Vellum with large forest green wax seal, for membership to the Woodmen of Arden, a prestigious society of longbow archers founded in 1785. Wax seal features a leaf wreath stamped "Arden" and an arrow through its center, is in very good condition, and affixed to document with green satin ribbon. Single leaf, written recto only, measuring approximately 18 x 33 cm, signed in the original by secretary Wriothesly Digby. Slight creasing and age toning, otherwise in very good and original condition, beautifully preserved as issued to the bearer, rolled and contained in the original tin tube with lid, measuring 18 cm in length, 2,5 cm in diameter. Lovely document with scarce and in tact Arden forest wax seal. This is the membership certificate of Reverend William Gresley (1801-1876), writer and Church of England clergyman. In the left margin is a hand coloured design of two gold bands on a navy background, indicating "the mark of Revd. W. Gresley register'd in the rolls", presumably painted on his arrows. In 1845 Gresley won a Bugle. His name and pedigree appear in the "Records of the Woodmen of Arden from 1785: With Roll of Members of the Society and Other Notes Mainly Compiled from the Archives of the Forest," printed in 1885 for private circulation. The document reads as follows: "To all to whom these presents shall come greeting these are to certify that on the 25th day of June one thousand eight hundred and twenty one. Revd. William Gresley... was duly elected a Woodman of the Forest of Arden." Gresley was a prolific author, propagating his high-church principles in theological treatises and numerous works of fiction. His title, "The Forest of Arden: a tale illustrative of the English Reformation (1841)" was one of his most popular works. He was father to William Nigel Gresley, ninth Baronet of Gresley of Drakelow. The Gresleys were an ancient Norman family, descended from Nigel de Stafford, the son of Robert de Stafford, scion of one of the most powerful Norman families in England. The Woodmen of Arden, a society of archers based in the Forest of Arden in Warwickshire, was run along similar lines to the earlier archery societies of the Restoration period. Supposedly "revived" in 1785 at a meeting at the Bull's Head Inn in Meriden, the society arranged itself in different ranks with annual archery competitions on the Packington Outwoods, leased to the society by founder Heneage Finch, fourth Earl of Aylesford (1751-1812). . Very Good.

Autographed Letter Signed with exceptional content

New York 1821 - New York patriot who was a close associate of Thomas Paine. In 1809 he nursed Paine back to health while on his death bed. 2 pages (front and back), 12.75 x 8.75 inches, with an integral address leaf, New York, July 16, 1821. Written to Philadelphia publishers McCarty & Davis, proposing a new biography of Thomas Paine, the author of Common Sense, in small part: ".I have been advised by a great number of citizens, to write an abridgement of the Life of Thomas Paine, and to have an engraved likeness of him taken from a miniature painting that I own, which was taken a few years before his death, it is said to be the best that ever was taken, no man liveing (sic) knew Pain (sic) better then (sic) myself -- Cheethans Life of Paine was a scandalous work, the price two dollars!.their (sic) are thousands in this countrey (sic) that would be willing to give a dollar for a good likeness of Paine, by its self." This, of course, was the furthest thing from the truth. When Paine died, only six people attended his funeral. He alienated just about every friend he had in America to the point that he was literally disowned. When Paine died, Carver buried him in the backyard of his house where he remained until two Englishmen dug him up and gave him a proper burial in England. Provenance: The Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Stained around the edges from tape reinforcements on the back; chipping at the edges; one horizontal fold; small hole on the left side, partially obscuring two words. Good condition. (XXIII) 720, 869 pages. 28 x 21.5. 88 plates, five in color, 27 folding with two portrait frontispieces and two fold-out maps, plus wood engravings in the text. Media for illustrations: uncolored line and stipple engravings, line engravings, colored and uncolored aquatints. Porter left St. Petersburg in August, 1817 which took him through the Caucasus to Teheran. His account of Persia remains today an important source for the region. At Persopolis he made drawings of the monuments and transcribed a number of cuneiform inscriptions, of great interest in the history of Assyriology. He traveled further to Shiraz, Isfahan, Ecbatana (a stop on the Silk Road, and a royal residence during the Parthian age), and Baghdad, then on to Scutari following the route of Xenophon's Persian expedition with the Ten Thousand. Porter was the first in modern times to locate the mausoleum of Cyrus The Great near Shiraz. Some occasional minor plate toning; nevertheless a very fresh copy. Binding not signed, raised bands, spine panels in elaborate gilt motifs, cover border panels, corners and center gilt decorated, inner dentelles, and marbled endpapers.

Gurlt, Hirsch II, 580f. - - First German Edition - "Brodies best work. It includes his description of hysterical pseudofracture of the spine and the first clinical description of ankylosing spondylitis. The fith edition, 1850 gives a description of "Brodie's disease" - chronic synovitis with a pulpy degeneration of the affected parts."
