Recueil des Cartes et des Vues du Voyage en Amerique en Italie en Sicile et en Egypte fait pendant les annees 1816, 1817, 1818 et 1819.

(Paris, Delaunay, 1821). - circa 29,5 x 37,5 cm. Lithographs: title, folding map and 56 views, some in one colour Contemporary cardboard with printed original label to spine ("Atlas du voyage.") Sabin 50230; Clark II, 47. The rare atlas only, without the 2 volumes of text and here with a total of 58 plates, instead of 59 (bibliographies seem to disagree but there are copies with a total of 59 - so here the plate 59, most likely a view of Egypt, is missing). The charming, sometimes a little naive lithographic plates were made after the author's own drawings. There is a folding map of the East coast of the United States, including the Missouri and Northwest territories and the Caribbean, among the views there are: New York harbor, a mastodon skeleton at the Philadelphia museum, "Encounter with a Rattle Snake" near the Ohio River, the port of St. Domingo, Niagara Falls, a view of St. Thomas, the Philadelphia hospital, Quaker costumes, "Costume des Negresses de St. Thomas," a country estate in Kingston (Jamaica), a church in New Orleans, "Sauvages du Mississippi" etc. Other plates show views from Italy (Livorno, Rome, Vesuvius, Aetna, Sicily etc.), two views of Malta and Gozzo and North Africa. The author is considered to have been one of the first passengers on a steamboat on the Mississippi. - Nice crisp copy, very clean and fresh, only very minor spotting. Binding rubbed, spine reinforced with paper. Plates of America complete, the last plate 59 must be of Egypt.

"Historical letters, including a brief but general view of the history of the world, civil, military, and religious, from the earliest times to the year of our Lord 1820 ... Second edition"

"Georgetown, D.C.": "Jacob Gideon, Jun. printer". 1821. "First Georgetown edition (first published in Richmond 1812); 12mo, pp. vii, [4], iv-vi, [7]-290, 5 (subscriber's list), [1]; large, early engraved armorial bookplate of John Lenthall, [Sr.] (signed 'Thackara' in the plate); with the ownership signature of his son John Lenthall [Jr.] (1807-1882) dated July 1821 on front free endpaper, and signed again on the title page; contemporary and almost certainly original full tree calf, 7 double gilt fillets on spine enclosing in 5 panels gilt ornaments, and in 1 a red morocco label, gilt board edges; slight wear at the extremities, but a very good example with distinctive gilt work on the spine. Almost certainly bound by Joseph Milligan, Georgetown bookbinder, based on the similarity of tools used on the spine (see Papantonio, 42). The engraved bookplate is by James Thackara who also engraved a number of plates for Dobson's encyclopedia. He was a partner of John Vallance in the engraving business. ""Thackara was inferior to his partner as an engraver, according to Dunlap, and for a long time was the keeper of the Pennsylvania Acadermy of Fine Arts. We know but one example of his bookplate, and that is the Lenthall plate, which is a large and very interesting example of the Ribbon and Wreath style. It is an excellent piece of engraving, full of style, and graceful in design"" (Allen, American Bookplates, pp. 152; illustrated on p. 153). Allen 481: ""The only signed specimen of this engraver's work."" See also Stauffer, American Engravers Upon Copper and Steel, II, pp. 517-19. The original owner of the book was the son of John Lenthall, an Englishman, ""who while acting as Latrobe's superintendent in the building of the Capitol was killed on Sept. 19, 1808, by the fall of a vaulting in the north wing. His son (1807-1882) the naval architect ""who was chiefly responsible for the wooden warships of the Union navy in the Civil War, was a native of the District of Columbia"" (DNB). The son undoubtedly co-opted his father's bookplate when coming of age 14 years following his father's death. The preliminaries include testimonial letters from David Ramsay, John Marshall, and Thomas Jefferson, among others. Among the subscribers are Thomas L. M'Kenney, J. K. Paulding, and three first ladies: Dolley Madison, Elizabeth Munroe and Louisa Adams who each took 5 copies."

Utopiaansche Courant 1-12; Utopiaansche weekblad 1-14 [with] Pleitrede van den schrijver der Utopiaansche courant

Amsterdam: A. Vink & H. Moolenijzer, 1821. Three parts; comprising broadsides, unbound quires, and an octavo book (full details below); all uncut, excellent in original wrappers, preserved in blue cloth solander case. News bulletins from the great southern utopia. Very rare collection of ephemeral Dutch satirical broadsides and pamphlets, voicing criticism of the State through fictitious news bulletins from a utopia located in the Southern Hemisphere. The Utopiaansche Courant was the inspiration of Amsterdam based dissident Jean-Baptiste Didier Wibmer. Born in 1792 and destined for a career in the clergy, Wibmer turned his literary energies to satire and criticism. The Courant mimicked the format of a traders' broadside, printing fictitious reports and dispatches from remote lands including the East Indies, along with information from imaginary and utopian countries including the unknown South Land, Tibur, Nova Zemba, and the like. Some issues include a woodcut of a figure observing the earth through a telescope, the globe clearly marked with five continents named "Afrika, Amerika, Europa, Asie, Utopia". To complete the façade, the Courant also included mock-up advertisements and family notices. The theme throughout was critical of the State, accordingly Wibmer and his publishers were arrested on 28 October 1819 following the printing of the sixth instalment of the Courant. Wibmer's defence lay in the patent absurdity of his writing, which had been deliberately and ambiguously composed to deflect successful prosecution. Wibmer was acquitted, but again landed in court following the resumption of the Courant through numbers 7 to 12. The Pleitrede or Defence was published in late 1819, with an engraved title page featuring Wibmer's portrait silhouette. The Utopiaansche weekblad continued the utopian satire, and was published in 14 parts over 1820-1821. This complete collection, comprising complete runs of the satirical ephemera accompanied by the Pleitrede, is an unusual survival indeed. All parts are very well preserved in original condition, uncut as issued from the press. The collection comprises three parts:Utopiaansche Courant. 12 folded broadside sheets measuring 460 x 270 mm., separately numbered 1-12. Amsterdam, A. Vink, H. Moolenijzer.Utopiaansche weekblad . 14 small quarto quires, continuously paginated [1]-112; separately numbered 1-14. Amsterdam, A. Vink.Pleitrede van den schrijver der Utopiaansche courant; half-title, engraved title, [ii]-xii, 68pp (last blank). Amsterdam, A. Vink 1819.

        Darstellung der Königlich Preussischen Cavallerie

1821. |~||~||~|PRUSSIAN CAVALRY JÜGEL, Johann Friedrich. Darstellung der Königlich Preussischen Cavallerie. [2] pp (title and contents). Illustrated with 41 figures on 37 coloured aquatint plates cut by Lieder und Krüger after original watercolours by Friedrich Jügel. Folio, 405 x 310 mm, loose in original publisher's paste-board wrapper, integrating the original issue's cover. Preserved in a modern half-linen box. Berlin: L. W. Wittich, 1821. |~||~||~||~||~| Extremely rare series of these brilliantly coloured, highly decorative aquatint plates by Friedrich Jügel. Thirty-four of the numbered and captioned colour plates depict single horsemen in front of a low horizon, including: Garde du Corps, Cuirassiers regiments, Garde-Dragonets, Dragonet regiments, Gendarmes, Hussars, etc. Johann Friedrich Jügel (1772-1833) was a professor of the art of copper engraving at the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin. Jügel studied under Chodowiecki at the Berlin Academy. He was responsible for a large output of both graphic work and reproductive graphic work during the turbulent political events in the Napoleonic era. Jügel also produced a number of portraits, topographical views and architectural buildings, some after Schinkel's designs. Jügel's original watercolours are preserved at the Army Library in Berlin and have been used by Graphische Kunstanstalt Jütte of Leipzig and other publishers to reprint this superb set of military costume plates. However, none of the reprints come close to the expressiveness of these original impressions. The value of Jügel's Prussian military costume prints lies in the unusually detailed depiction of the uniforms, of the gear, and of the weapons. Other uniform series showing the Prussian army remained for the most part uncoloured and many details have been left out or left unclear. Slight wear to spine of paper wrapper. A complete set in excellent condition, of great rarity. Lipperheide 2162. Colas 1866. Hiler 488.

        Rudiments of Tamul Grammar:

London: J. M. Richardson,, 1821. combining with the Rules of Kodun Tamul, or the Ordinary Dialect, an Introduction to Shen Tamul, or the Elegant Dialect, of the Language. Quarto. Original blue-grey boards, drab brown spine, paper label, untrimmed. Folding letterpress table of the Tamil alphabet. Neat ownership inscription and book label on front pastedown, some wear to binding but an excellent tall copy in the original boards, largely unopened. First edition, scarce: Copac locates only 7 copies at British and Irish institutional libraries (British Library, London Library, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, BLRPS, SOAS). This appears to be the first Tamil grammar in English that was not a direct translation of another Western grammar. In his Preface, Anderson mentions using several grammars (some in manuscript versions) by the Italian Jesuit priest Constanzo Beschi (1680-1742) and acknowledges the assistance of Benjamin Babington, who himself published a translation of Beschi's work in 1822. Robert Anderson is described on the title page as "of the Madras Civil Service" and as assistant professor of oriental languages at the East India Company's College.

First report of the Directors of the School of Arts of Edinburgh,

for the education of mechanics in such branches of physical science as are of practical application in their several trades.A foundation document in the origins of Heriot-Watt University which sprang organically, as it were, from this, the world's first Mechanics Institute. The first Directors of the Edinburgh School of Arts included the inspirational Leonard Horner, together with such heavyweights as David Brewster, James Jardine, James Pillans, William Playfair, and James Skene. Horner was the secretary and it is likely that it was he who wrote the present report. The mission statement incorporated in this first report is worth quoting: "The School of Arts of Edinburgh took its origin from an accidental conversation in the shop of Mr. Bryson, watchmaker, in March 1821. To a question, whether young men brought up in the trade of watch making received any mathematical education, Mr. Bryson replied, that it is seldom, if ever, the case; that they daily experience the effects of the want of this instruction, but the expence and the usual hours of masters who teach mathematics, put it out of the power of working tradesmen to obtain it. It was suggested, that it might be very possible to devise some plan by which such branches of science as would be useful to mechanics in the exercise of their trade, might be taught at convenient hours, and at an expence which would be within their reach; for an institution of this description had long existed at Glasgow, and had been attended with very beneficial effects".And the Prospectus accordingly declared that "This Association [i.e. 'School of Arts, for the better Education of the Mechanics of Edinburgh'] has been formed for the purpose of enabling industrious tradesmen to become acquainted with such of the principles of mechanics, chemistry, and other branches of science, as are of practical application in their several trades, that they may possess a more thorough knowledge of their business, acquire a greater degree of skill in the practice of it, and be led to improvement with a greater security of support ......".The Report provides a full descriptive account of the staff and students, the syllabuses of the various courses, and, of course, a list of benefactors. Among these was our Robert Ferguson of Raith who is recorded as having donated one guinea.8vo., (2) + 50pp., early 19th century half calf over marbled boards, neatly rebacked and labelled, with the armorial bookplate of Ferguson of Raith on front pastedown. Like Sir Richard Burton on his visit to Mecca many years later, Lyon wore Arab dress and having learned fluent Arabic, he managed to blend in with the inhabitants of North Africa. His expedition was not a success in terms of achieving its stated goals, but still provided useful information on the isolated parts of North Africa he visited. Many fine full-page coloured lithographs of Arab costume, five with camels being packed and ridden, and a few archaeological sites. A fine copy. Abbey, Travel 304. Tooley 311. Hilmy I, 397.         Amarynthus, the Nympholept: a pastoral drama, in three acts. With other poems

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, & Brown, 1821. First edition. xii, 232, 12pp of publisher's advertisements, dated October 1820. 1 vols. 8vo. Calf backed marbled boards, with the original paper spine label pasted onto the final endleaf, top edge gilt, others uncut. Half title shows some repair, otherwise a fine copy. A large uncut copy of the first edition of Smith's first book. Horace Smith, a stock broker, and his brother James were members of the London literary scene that included Leigh Hunt, John Keats, and Percy Shelley. Smith and Shelley were close friends and the pair entered a sonnet writing contest sponsored by The Examiner on the statue of Rameses II in the British Museum, resulting in Shelley's famous poem 'Ozymandias'. Smith's own result of the contest, 'On a Stupendous Leg of Granite, Discovered Standing by itself in the Deserts of Eqypt, with the Inscription inserted below,' appears here on page 213. Smith served as a financial agent to Shelley, leading the latter to ask Leigh Hunt, 'is it not odd, that the only truly generous person I ever knew, who had money to be generous with, should be a stockbroker?' (DNB).

Veduta di porzione degli avanzi dell'Ambulacro del piano terra nel Colosseo

Rome.. 1821.. Copperplate engraving, 18 1/4 x 15 1/4 inches on sheet size 30 1/4 x 20 1/2. Light scattered foxing, mainly in outer margins, a few 1/4 inch tears to outer edges and chip to upper left corner of sheet (not affecting image), dampstain to upper left margin (outside plate area), pieces of adhesive tape along verso of right edge (not visible from front), soft undulations to paper. A very good impression. Ground level view of a portion of the remains of the Colosseum. This impressive engraving by Luigi Rossini (1790-1857) is from the Le Antichita Romane series, depicting the antiquities of Rome and environs. Carrying on the tradition of Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) and himself an architect, Rossini's prints celebrated the Classical Tradition and appealed to the well-to-do tourists on the Grand Tour and to architects and designers. The engravings powerfully evoke the glories of Ancient Rome, while also providing the modern viewer with glimpses of this magnificent city in the early 19th century. .
