        General History of Birds

1821. LATHAM, John.A General History of Birds.Winchester: Jacob and Johnson, 1821-28.Eleven volumes.First edition of this comprehensive and systematic study ?"of every new discovery in ornithology,?" illustrated with 193 hand-colored copperplate engravings by Latham himself, handsomely bound by Mackenzie.Known as the ?"grandfather of Australian ornithology?" for his descriptions of birds in Arthur Phillip?'s Voyage to Botany Bay (1789), Dr. John Latham was the first to describe and name a large number of Australian birds, among them the emu, white cockatoo, wedge-tailed eagle, lyre-bird and magpie. He was a founding member of the Linnean Society in 1788, and through this association became acquainted with the noteworthy British naturalists and natural history collectors of his day. By way of these connections, he was able to examine most of the specimens and drawings of the newly discovered Australian and South Seas?' birds that were pouring into England from various expeditions. Latham?'s General History of Birds, an enlargement of his earlier General Synopsis of Birds (1781-1801), ?"is his great work, and was dedicated to George IV. He designed, etched, and colored all the illustrations himself?" (DNB). ?"A particularly important source of illustrations of Australian birds was the ?'Lambert drawings?' which Latham borrowed from Aylmer Bourke Lambert who apparently acquired them from Surgeon-General John White. A considerable number of these appear to be copies of some of the ?'Watling drawings,?' the work of Thomas Watling and other artists in the infant settlement at Port Jackson. Although he does not mention Watling, Latham quotes notes on the habits of birds taken from drawings in the Watling set… Latham made the first contribution of any importance to Australian ornithology, and it was not surpassed until John Gould embarked on his comprehensive and systematic study several decades later?" (ADB). Nine plates with duplicate numbers (two numbers altered by hand).Zimmer, 376-77. See Anker 277-79; Nissen 532; Sitwell, 114.Interiors quite clean, with foxing only to occasional sections, plates near-fine (some plates treated with a contemporary fixative, since faintly discolored), minor offsetting from text to plates. Moderate rubbing to extremities of original morocco, paper on front board of Index half scraped away. An extremely good set.

Rome, December 5, 1821. - 2 pp. Large 8vo. To one of her sons on marriage plans for her grandson, presumably Jérôme Napoléon Bonaparte-Patterson (1805–1870), and other family news: „Mon très cher fils, Je vous écrivis le 20 9bre en vous adressant ma lettre par Bruxelles. [ ]". Sprache: fr

An essay on the production of wealth; with an appendix, in which the principles of political economy are applied to the actual circumstances of this country

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown. 1821. 8co., xvi + 430pp., title-page lightly soiled and with faint show-through of an old library stamp on verso, another old inkstamp at foot of final leaf, in a fine recent binding of old-style sprinkled half calf gilt with raised bands and morocco gilt-lettered spine label. A handsome copy. First edition. Goldsmiths 23151. Kress C.795. Sraffa 5914. Mattioli 3642. Not in Einaudi. Mark Blaug (Great Economists before Keynes>) considered this to be 'full of cogent comments on value, rent, profits and Say's law of markets'. [p.252]. J.R. McCulloch (1845) thought it to be 'well-written, ingenious, and generally sound'. Although damned by Palgrave ('as a rule are devoid of permanent merit'), III, p.550, modern economic historians have been kinder, suggesting that Torrens has indeed made valuable contributions to political economy. Spiegel [The Growth of Economic Thought,> p.347], says this: 'Torrens's theory of value contains both a critique, one of the earliest, of Ricardo's labor theory of value, and as a positive contribution a value theory of his own. He denied the validity of the labour theory value in a multifactor economy and, as Lauderdale had done before and as Bailey was to do again shortly, refused to participate in the search of an invariable measure of value. To him, value is a more relation between goods, not between the quantities of labor embodied in them but between the quantities of capital, including the outlay for wages, invested in their production. If competition equates the rates of profit throughout the economy, then, so Torrens argued, goods must exchange in proportion to the capital invested in them, with an adjustment to take account of the different durability of capital'.

Recueil de trente croquis lithographies representant des scenes et costumes Russes.

Engelmann Paris 1821 - Folio (44 x 29 cm). 30 plates, lithographed by C. de Lasteyrie after drawings by Armand Gustave Houbigant, Chippart and Hippolite Bellangé, with a letter of presentation from the publisher, original printed upper wrapper bound in acting as a title page. Contemporary green calf-backed boards; hinges slightly cracked; extremities slightly rubbed, corners bumped. Presentation copy, inscribed by one of the artists, Houbigant, and with an autograph letter addressed to his friend Mr Petit. This set of plates is largely devoted to games, entertainment and customs of the Russians. They include a Russian baptism, pleasure boating, dancing and 'Montagnes de Glace' which appears to be an early form of dry-ski slope for tobogganing in the snow. Most of the plates are by Houbigant or Chippart, or occasionally both, and have been identified in ink within the image, presumably by Houbigant, with the respective artist's name. They were originally published, attributed to Houbigant, as Moeurs et costumes des Russes, représentés en 50 planches (first edition in 1817) reprinted here under a different title and with fewer plates. Very rare. The presentation letter from the artist written in French can be translated as follows: "My dear Mr. Petit, I'm sending you, as a little distraction from your loneliness, the album of lithographs that I've told you about. However, since there is no text in the album that I'm offering you, I'm sending you my personal copy of the work published by me. Please browse through it without disturbing the plates or the text; you will give it back to me when you no longer find it entertaining. Yours sincerely, A.G. Houbigant With all my respect to Madame your mother." At the bottom of the title page there is another inscription in the same hand: "Given to Monsieur Petit as a sign of my appreciation. 2 September 1834. A.G. Houbigant" (translated from original French). The date on the letter is not very clear but seems to be same as on the title page inscription, 2nd September, leaving us to guess if Houbigant's initial intention was to simply lend this copy to his friend Mr. Petit or whether he actually meant it as a gift. In any case, the fact that the upper pastedown bears Petit's bookplate indicates that he found the work entertaining enough to keep in his library. Armand Gustave Houbigant (1790-1863) was born in Paris into a family of wealthy traders. His father Jean-Francois was a famous perfume seller. Armand became a respected historian, antiquarian, drawer and lithographer, and served as a mayor of Nogent from 1831 to 1848. Colas 1497 and 2512; Lipperheide 1352 and 1353. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The four color plates are: "Rouen", "Pont Notre Dame", "Mouth of the Seine" and "Poissy"."The River Seine is well known to form a distinguished feature in the Tour of France, as it winds through and adorns the important province of Normandy, and is the great commercial Channel of the Metropolis of that Kingdom. This River reflects, in its earlier stream, the most striking views of metropolitan grandeur; and, as it proceeds, Nature has been most lavish in beautiful pictures on its banks, and presents, in its course, a succession of objects, whose landscape enrichments are connected with antiquarian circumstances peculiarly interesting to the English Traveller" (prospectus on verso of the wrappers). The work was issued by Ackermann in six parts, each containing four plates, between January and June 1821. Seven hundred and fifty copies were printed on regular paper, at 14s per part, and fifty large-paper copies, "taken on Atlas Paper" at 21s per part. (Tooley). Abbey, Travel 90; Tooley 445; Bobins, Exotic and the Beautiful II: 548. [Attributes: First Edition]
