        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Berlin, 24. November 1821.

Imprimerie de Lafourcarde, Philadelphia 1821 - 150 pages with 42 color imprints in green, black and red and one wood cult illustrations of chess piece. Small octavo (7" x 4 1/2") bound in quarter leather with raised spine bands and gilt lettering to spine. (Hagedorn: 6; Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:457) Later edition of Phildor's work first published in 1749. Fiske noted that the paper, typography and general appearance of the work prove to have been printed in Euripe and probably Belgium. But despite its spurious imprint, Hagedorn felt that it required inclusion in his bibliography of Chess in America to 1859. He goes on to suggest that the problems of its pedigree have yet to be solved. America had at that time achieved no fame in the chess world that would make a book from the United States attractive to foreign players. It does not seem to be based on any known American work. He suggest that the answer might be found in the publishing records of early nineteenth century Belgium. In 1736 at the age of 10, Francois-Andre was exposed to chess by the musicians who played chess during spells of inactivity. Cards were forbidden to pass the time, so chess was played. He learned the game by watching the band members play. He later visited the Cafe de la Regence in Paris and spent much of his time playing chess there. In 1737, at the age of 11, his first music composition, a religious piece, was played before King Louis XV. He left the Chapel Royal choir in 1740 when his voice changed. In 1740 he went to Paris where he earned a living by copying music and giving music lessons. In 1741 Philidor was being instructed by M. de Kermur, Sire de Legal (1702-1792), the leading French chess player. Legal initially gave Philidor rook odds. For the next three years Kermur taught Philidor until Philidor was too strong for his teacher. By 1750 Philidor was considered the strongest player in France, England, and the Netherlands. The French Ambassador, the Duke of Mirepoix, invited Philidor for his weekly chess dinners. In 1751 Philidor left England for Prussia, playing before King Frederick (Frederick the Great) at Potsdam. He then visited Berlin where he played 3 blindfold games simultaneously, winning them all. He then returned to England. In November 1754 he returned to France after being gone for 9 years. He started composing music again. He did not return to England until 1772. He applied unsuccessfully for the post of court composer at Versailles. A rumor had started that nobody could be a chess master and compose good music, so his church music was not really his own. His church music was not accepted by the French royalty because Philidor added an Italian influence to it, so he turned to comedy opera. In 1755 he beat Legal in a chess match at the Cafe de la Regence. On February 13, 1760, at age 33, he married Angelique Richer (1736-1809). He had 5 sons and 2 daughters with her. Condition: Some rubbing to extremities, some light foxing, gift inscription on front end paper else a very attractive copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Brunet, t. III, 819. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

An Essay on the Production of Wealth.

London: Longman, Hurst [& 3 others in London],, 1821. Octavo (134 × 212 mm). Bound in modern half tan morocco, marbled sides, brown label to spine lettered gilt, motifs to spine gilt, marbled sides. Former library copy with the withdrawal stamp of Rosenburg Library, Galveston. Occasional light spotting to contents, an excellent copy. First edition of this important work by one of the first economists to attribute the production of wealth to the joint action of three instruments of production: land, labour, and capital. Spiegel writes that "Torrens's theory of value contains both a critique, one of the earliest, of Ricardo's labor theory of value, and as a positive contribution a value theory of his own. He denied the validity of the labour theory value in a multifactor economy and, as Lauderdale had done before and as Bailey was to do again shortly, refused to participate in the search of an invariable measure of value. To him, value is a more relation between goods, not between the quantities of labor embodied in them but between the quantities of capital, including the outlay for wages, invested in their production. If competition equates the rates of profit throughout the economy, then, so Torrens argued, goods must exchange in proportion to the capital invested in them, with an adjustment to take account of the different durability of capital" (The Growth of Economic Thought, p. 347). Torrens (1780??-1864) was born in Ireland; he wrote around ninety books and pamphlets on economics, politics, and social questions, including Thoughts on the Catholic Question (1808) in which he supported Catholic emancipation, and An Essay on the External Corn Trade (1815), in which he "discovered the principle of comparative advantage in international trade and shared with Ricardo and Malthus the discovery of the law of diminishing returns" (ODNB).

Boards somewhat rubbed and with some damp-staining at the top edges, spine sunned and the paper label chipped, pale browning to the text-block, occasional spotting, hinges carefully repaired, spine relined, but overall a very good copy, judiciously restored and well-preserved in the original boards. Engraved frontispiece and 8 folding plates. Half-title bound in. First edition. "The basis for modern topographical and archaeological studies of the city. A very important work" (Blackmer). Trained at the Royal Military Academy, Leake served for three years on the garrison at Antigua before joining the British military mission to the Ottoman empire in 1799. He accompanied an Anglo-Turkish expedition overland to Egypt in 1800, seeing action at the battle of al-Khanka and the siege of Alexandria in 1801, before returning home via Greece in 1802. Between 1805 and 1810 he travelled extensively through Greece and the Levant, acting as liaison with Ali Pasha in an attempt to influence the vizier to support Britain's actions against the French in the region; "The mission was not a complete success: increasingly, Leake felt his life was threatened by Ali Pasha and eventually he left" (ODNB). During Leake's residence in Greece he met Byron who found him: "taciturn', ill-dressed and quite unlike an Englishman of this world". Back in London, "Colonel" Leake as he was universally known, was a frequent contributor to learned journals, eight of his papers appeared in the Classical Journal between 1814 and 1822, and twenty in the Transactions of the Royal Society of Literature between 1829 and 1851, and this together with the publication of nine books, including the present, secured him a place, despite his "singular modesty", as "a well-respected member of the unseen college of intellectuals, politicians, and wealthy individuals which flourished in early nineteenth-century London". Leake's core interests were the modern Greek language, Greek topography and numismatics, but overall "one cannot overestimate Leake's importance as an observer of the state of Greece in the 19th century, and the value of his descriptions of the country" (Atabey). Surprisingly uncommon in commerce, particularly so in boards, the Atabey copy, in contemporary calf bound without the half-title, made £2500 hammer in 2002. Atabey 689; Blackmer 971; Weber I, 127.

MEMOIRS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION, FROM ITS COMMENCEMENT TO THE YEAR 1776, INCLUSIVE; AS RELATING TO THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA: AND OCCASIONALLY REFERRING TO THE STATES OF NORTH-CAROLINA AND GEORGIA

Charleston, 1821. Publisher's blue paper boards, rebacked at a later date in paper. Boards bumped on corners. Very good, untrimmed. Provenance: Arthur Middleton, Jr. (signature on front endpaper); Library of Congress duplicate (inked stamps and book label). A basic source for the history of the American Revolution in the southern colonies, based largely on material the author inherited from his father, William Henry Drayton, who was an active leader of the Revolution. The author served twice as governor of South Carolina, and was deeply interested in its history from an early age. This history of the early stages of the Revolution in South Carolina was the product of his retirement and published a year before his death. It remains one of the standard works. One of the maps shows forts Sullivan and Moultrie, while the other shows the positions in the 1776 campaign in the Carolina upcountry against the Cherokees. This copy belonged to Arthur Middleton, Jr. (1795-1853), the grandson and namesake of South Carolina signer of the Declaration of Independence, Arthur Middleton, one of the first Americans to travel as an artist in Italy and paint the Italian countryside.

Plates depict victims of the Inquisition before and after sentencing, in the torture chamber and at an auto da fé. There is also a plate showing the Inquisition removing the sentence of excommunication from D. João IV, and another titled "Filippe III Rei d'Hespanha" (i.e. Filipe III of Portugal, who was Filipe IV of Spain at the time Portugal declared independence in 1640?), in which the Spanish King consults with inquisitors in a palace while the fires of the Inquisition can be seen through an open door. This is an unacknowledged translation of Lavallé's @Histoire des Inquisitions religieuses d'Italie, d'Espagne, et du Portugal, first published in Paris, 1809. An English translation appeared in London, 1816. The work was placed on the Index in 1825.         Analyse du jeu des échecs : avec une nouvelle notation abrégée, et quarante-deux planches où se trouve figurée la situation du jeu pour les renvois et les fins de partie. Nouvelle Édition. A laquelle on a joint la figure et la marche des différentes pièce

Philadelphia: Chez J Johnston, libraire-editeur. Imprimerie de Lafourcarde, 1821 150 pages with 42 color imprints in green, black and red and one wood cult illustrations of chess piece. Small octavo (7" x 4 1/2") bound in quarter leather with raised spine bands and gilt lettering to spine. (Hagedorn: 6; Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:457) Later edition of Phildor's work first published in 1749.Fiske noted that the paper, typography and general appearance of the work prove to have been printed in Euripe and probably Belgium. But despite its spurious imprint, Hagedorn felt that it required inclusion in his bibliography ofChess in America to 1859. Condition:Some rubbing to extremities, some light foxing, gift inscription on front end paper else a very attractive copy.

Nennhausen, "am Gründonnerstag [d. i. 24. III.] 1821. - 1 S. 4to. (Briefe an Friedrich Baron de la Motte Fouqué, Berlin 1848, S. 309f.). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Elements of the Art of Packing, as applied to special Juries, particularly in cases of Libel Law.

London: Effingham Wilson,, 1821. Octavo (211 × 125 mm). Recent blue morocco-backed cloth boards, red morocco label. In very good condition. Without the final advertisement leaves listing Bentham's books for sale. First published edition, originally printed in 1810, of Bentham's criticism of English libel law, which he had always detested and which more than once stood in the way of the free publication of his opinions. When the work was written, the law's injustice had recently been made obvious in a series of prosecutions for libelling the Duke of York. The Art of Packing contains many bitter animadversions on the Judges, and Romilly, who read the manuscript, warned Bentham that the attorney-general would be certain to prosecute both author and publisher under the very law the work condemns. Bentham accepted Romilly's advice not to sell it openly, though he gave away copies to his friends. The leaf of Advertisement to the present edition states: "In regard to the Author, all that need be said is ?- that it was not by him that it was … kept back; and that it is not by him, or at his instance, that it is now put forth. If, on either accounts, it were desirable that the causes of its being thus long withheld should be brought to view, those causes would afford a striking illustration of the baneful influence of the principles and practices it is employed in unveiling, and presenting in their true colours."

        Archive of Autograph Manuscripts.

      - This clergyman graduated from the New Brunswick Theological Seminary (oldest Protestant seminary in North America) in 1821 and began serving the parish of Stone Arabia, New York, in 1822, along with churches in local small communities such as Manheim, Danube (Indian Castle), Salisbury, Columbia, Second Herkimer, Ephratah and Remsen Snyder's Bush; Ketcham was a close friend of Martin Van Buren, who as president appointed him as U.S. Indian Agent in 1839, assigned to relocate some Potawatomi Indians from Michigan and Indiana beyond the Mississippi River; he served as a hospital chaplain for a time during the Civil War, and spent his last years on a farm near St. Louis. A fascinating archive totalling perhaps 200 to 300 manuscript pages, 1820s-30s vintage, consisting of a dozen or more actual manuscripts sermons actually preached by Ketcham -- often followed by his notes indicating when and where he had preached each particular sermon. These vary in size from quite small (32mo) to 8vo, and in length from several tightly-lettered pages to a dozen or more pages. All are fairly neatly penned in Ketcham's small, sometimes miniscule hand in brown ink on moderately age toned stock with occasional foxing. In addition, also present are two small (16mo and 24mo), thick sewn pamphlets containing Ketcham's extensive and detailed Hebrew grammar notes and a small sheaf of varying-size notes on theological matters and partial sermon notes. It is most unusual to find actual working draft manuscript sermons, as delivered, showing how RCA (Reformed Church in America) clergy presented their message in early 19th century New England. A remarkable collection certainly worth further research.

William Hogarth (10 November 1697 – 26 October 1764) was an English painter, printmaker, pictorial satirist, social critic, and editorial cartoonist who has been credited with pioneering western sequential art. His work ranged from realistic portraiture to comic strip-like series of pictures called \"modern moral subjects\". Knowledge of his work is so pervasive that satirical political illustrations in this style are often referred to as \"Hogarthian\". (Wikip.) Versand D: 6,00 EUR 19. The expedition rounded Cape Horn and visited Chile, Easter Island, the Marshall Islands, Hawaii, and the North American coast, in an unsuccessful search for a northwest passage. There is also a detailed description of California, notable for including the first scientific account of the state flower, the Golden Poppy. The account of Albert von Chamisso, the expedition naturalist, includes important information about flora and fauna, as well as the Indians and the work of the missionaries. There is also a table of comparative vocabulary for the languages of some of the islanders. The handsome color plates illustrate native royalty and lifestyles, icebergs in Kotzebue Sound, and Royal Morai off Owyhee.

        Divers croquis de chevaux.

Paris c. 1821 - Small landscape 4to (19.5 x 27.5 cm), 12 lithographed plates (plate size not including margins 9 x 5 cm) one plate detached, all signed Carle Vernet, some with very light marginal spotting to a few plates, original wrappers with letterpress title to upper cover; small marginal tears and slight soiling to wrappers; overall an attractive album. Uncommon album of equestrian studies. This small collection of horse plates, including six with military uniform, two battle scenes and some hunting scenes, is a good example of Vernet's naturalistic style, almost all the plates convey movement of some form either with the horses or in the background. There are no copies on Worldcat under this title. There are two copies under a different title "Douze croquis de chevaux."in Danish libraries and there appears to be an English edition engraved by E. Purcell and printed in London, (two copies on Worldcat). No copies on Copac. Scarce. Antoine Charles Vernet (1758 - 1836), also known as Carle, was the son and pupil of the marine painter, Claude Joseph Vernet. From an early age he showed a tremendous aptitude for drawing and in 1782 was successful in winning the coveted Prix de Rome. Under the Empire he was much admired by Napoleon and he was awarded the Legion of Honor for his drawings of the Italian campaign. However, he is most noted as a painter and lithographer of horses, a subject to which he was devoted during the years of the Restoration. Benezit 4. p. 678 (for Delpech), Benezit 14 p.207 (for Vernet); Mellon p.120 ( for the English edition by Purcell). Menessier II, p.617 ( for Vernet) [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
