A Treatise on the culture of the vine; with hints on the formation of vineyards in England. A treatise on the culture of the Pine-apple, and the management of the hot-house ... third edition

London: printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1821. 2 parts in one volume, octavo. (8 7/16 x 5 inches). Half-title, general title, 2 part titles. 10 engraved plates (6 folding) after Speechly (8), Samuel Hieronymous Grimm (1) and Major Hayman Rooke (1). (Minor foxing to the plates). Contemporary green half calf over marbled paper-covered boards, the flat spine divided into six compartments by gilt fillets and a decorative roll, lettered in the second compartment, the others with repeat floral tooling Provenance: William Russell Grace (1832-1904, armorial bookplate) The Grace copy of the first combined edition of "the most important [works] on the culture of the vine and pineapple published during the eighteenth century, and it may be said that they laid the foundation for the improvements that followed" (Henrey). The two parts to this work were first published as separate treatises in 1790 (the vine) and 1779 (the pineapple), with second editions following in 1805 and 1796, respectively. The present third edition, the first time the two works had been published in combined form, is complete with ten plates: the plate list appears to call for eleven, but the fifth plate in the second part is not required. Speechly was a practical gardener who made his name working at Welbeck Abbey, the Duke of Portland's seat in Nottinghamshire, England. The results of his labours at Welbeck combined with the publication of the present treatises cemented his reputation as the one of the "best fruit and kitchen gardeners of his time" (Sandra Raphael). The reputation of his published works remains high: Edward Hyams in his Grapes under Cloches (London: 1952) praises this work as being "a model of the sound, practical, well-written ... manual." Irish-born William Russell Grace, co-founder of W.R Grace and Co., was an American success story and one of the richest men in the country. He was also a noted philanthropist and served two terms as Mayor of New York. James M.         Juko Toka ben'yo [trans.: Essentials of the Treatment of Smallpox].

Several illus. in the text. Ten vols. in six. 8vo, orig. wrappers (some sporadic minor worming), orig. block printed title label on each upper cover (several rubbed), new stitching. Tokyo: 1821. Second edition, gathering for the first time three important texts (see below) by Ikeda on Chinese vaccination. Ikeda (1734-1816), was a member of a prominent family of physicians, most famous for their smallpox treatment, using family secrets. He studied with Saimon-ge, a Chinese physician living in Japan. In 1798, the shogunate opened the first medical school (Igakukwan) and the etiology of smallpox was first studied in this school by Zuisen. "Chinese vaccination (i.e. inoculation) has been known in Japan since about the year 1653 when one Sai Manko first introduced the practice and taught the art of Chinese vaccination to Masanao Ikeda. After that time the Japanese made rather thorough studies of vaccination, using especially three old Chinese books on the subject: Shoni toshin horon (n.d.) by Chin Banc of the Sung Dynasty; Toshin bengi kinkyo-roku (n.d.) by Loy Teiken; and Toka-ko (n.d.) by Shu Son. A century later, in 1788, a descendant of Masanao, named Zuisen Ikeda, wrote three books, each of one volume, entitled Toso membu-den, Toso shinzetsu-den and Toso shinzetsu-zu. The first two of those writings contained illustrations of the faces of patients suffering from smallpox."-Mestler, A Galaxy of Old Japanese Medical Books, Part V, p. 200. The illustrations depict scars incurred by the disease and the faces of patients with smallpox. The text offers drug prescriptions, methods of diagnosis, and treatments. Fine and fresh set. .

Shimpen Sanko [trans.: Treatment of Complications from Pregnancy and Labor].

15 full-page illus. 42; 38 folding leaves. Two vols. in one. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. block-printed title label on upper cover, modern stitching. Kyoto: 1821. Second edition. "A quaint thought, but an altogether delightful one, is suggested in the title San ko, the interpretation of which we read in the preface as 'childbearing...is like a ferry boat which is sailing on a big ocean.' That two-volume obstetrical work was written entirely in Chinese characters by the Japanese physician Korechika or Ishin Kuwabara, and was first published in 1813 with a later edition in 1821 under the title Shimpen san ko. The illustrations are well-drawn. It is intriguing to see again the representation of one-egg and two-egg twins, with no comment in the text other than 'the two fetuses have one ena [placenta]' or 'each fetus has its own ena,' respectively. In that work some attempt was made to describe embryonic malformations and fetal monsters, and there is an illustration of anencephalia."- Mestler, A Galaxy of Old Japanese Medical Books, II, p. 495.         Recherches sur la population, et sur la faculté d'accroissement de l'espèce humaine; contenant une réfutation des doctrines de M. Malthus sur cette matière ... traduit de l'Anglais, part F.-S. Constancio ...

Paris. J-P Aillaud. 1821. Two vols., 8vo., (4) + xiv + 416 and (4) + 473 + (1)pp., with the two half-titles, in slightly later 19th century quarter calf over marbled boards, spines gilt with raised bands, labels renewed. A very good copy. First edition in French. Kress C.710. Goldsmiths 23169. Einaudi 2635. Schumpeter p.579. Patricia James, Population Malthus>, pp.376-82. Sabin 27676 (regarding a large section on the population of North America). The alacrity with which Godwin's work was translated into French indicates the lively interest in the Malthus-Godwin debate across the channel, which was to continue throughout the nineteenth century. Godwin had been one of Malthus's main antagonists for over two decades. He replied to the attacks made on him by Malthus in the first Essay>, 1798, through his Thoughts Occasioned by the Perusal of Dr. Parr's Spital Sermon>, subtitled being a reply to the attacks of Dr. Parr, Mr. Mackintosh, the Author of an Essay on Population and Others> published in 1801. From the Great Quarto of 1803 through to the 4th ed. of 1807 Malthus dealt extensively with Godwin's comments. However, by the 5th ed. of 1815 Godwin is largely ignored, precedence being given to the rising star, Robert Owen. Godwin was much distressed by this dismissal and this was exacerbated by his envy of Malthus's success. Why he waited a further five years, and nearly twenty in all, to lay his full views before the public is a mystery. It is, as Patricia James explains, painful reading, over 600 pages of repetitive bitterness. Godwin does not content himself with refuting the arguments but insists on running down his adversary in an insolent and bullying manner. No matter, it is still essential reading to fully understand the extent and heat of this most famous controversy.

Autograph letter signed "F. Liszt" regarding a concert engagement for the distinguished mezzo-soprano Pauline Viardot

      - The present letter was written during a darker time in Liszt's personal life, just before he presented his official resignation to the Grand Duke of Weimar, and an unexpected, but serious, breach in his friendship with Richard Wagner. Pauline Viardot (1821-1910) was a distinguished French singer and composer whose voice inspired many of the 19th century's most important composers, including Liszt. 2 pp. Ca. 156 x 127 mm. Dated Weimar, December 22, [18]58. A remarkable letter in which Liszt asks a certain "Monsieur le Baron" to secure a concert engagement for the famed mezzo-soprano, Pauline Viardot, "who has just ravished us in the roles of Norma and Rosina. Persuaded of the very great pleasure that the Duke of Altenburg would find listening, at his court, to an artist very much at the height of all her fame, I have no fear of appearing indiscreet in begging you, Monsieur le Baron, to ask Their Highnesses which days between the 23rd and January 1st. [they] could settle upon a court concert at Altenburg." The "Baron" in question may have been Baron Alexis Des Michels (b.1836), a French diplomat and close friend of Charles Gounod, who had just visited Liszt at his villa near Weimar. Slightly worn; two minor creases and one small tear at folds; small light rectangular stain from remnants of tape to lower right corner.

The Village Minstrel and Other Poems

London: Taylor and Hessey, Fleet Street; and E. Drury, Stamford, 1821. Two twelvemo volumes bound in a single volume, modern dark green calf over marbled paper boards, raised bands, spine compartments ruled in gilt, brown morocco spine label lettered in gilt, endpapers renewed. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Clare in Volume I; Volume II bound without title page and first page of table of contents. Ink ownership signatures of Fenwick Skrimshire to title of Volume I and half-title of Volume II. Light foxing. First edition of ?"peasant poet?" John Clare's second book, following the surprise success of Poems Descriptive of Rural Life and Scenery in 1820. A Northamptonshire farm laborer whose personal struggles were compounded by mental illness, Clare produced hundreds of closely observed lyrics that remain startling in their immediacy and detail: ?"Bees in every peep did try, / Great had been the honey shower, / Soon their load was on their thigh, / Yellow dust as fine as flour.?" This copy bears the ownership signature of Clare's sympathetic longtime doctor, Fenwick Skrimshire, who first treated Clare in 1820, and eventually admitted him to the Northampton General Lunatic Asylum, where Clare spent his final years, still writing: "He lives the Crusoe of his lonely fields / Which dark green oaks his noontide leisure shields." When Skrimshire and Clare arrived at the asylum, the doctor described Clare's madness as hereditary; asked if it had been ?"preceded by any severe or long continued mental emotion or exertion,?" Skrimshire noted: ?"after years addicted to Poetical prosing?" (Bate, 5). Skrimshire's copy of The Village Minstrel is accompanied here by a first edition of his own 1838 treatise, The Village Pastor's Surgical and Medical Guide, in which he advises on the treatment of the insane: ?"the friend who can command a firm authoritative manner, and whilst looking the patient steadfastly in the face, will seize his arm, and lead him resolutely back to his bed, need not dread his violence.?" A near-fine copy, with a moving association.

"Mémoire sur la Fermentation appelée lactique; Memoire sur la Fermentation alcoolique."Paris: Mallet-Bachelier, "1858; 1860".

"First printings, in the very rare offprint form (first paper <b>inscribed by Pasteur</b>), of these two landmark papers, "often considered the beginning of bacteriology as a modern science, [which constitute] the first demonstration of the connection between a specific fermentation and the activity of a specific microorganism" (Garrison & Morton); "A great milestone in biochemistry" (Neville II, p. 274). "Pasteur's first paper on fermentation contains most of the central theoretical and methodological features of his biological theory of fermentation, in particular the concept of fermentation as a product of the growth of yeast, the idea that air is a source of microscopic yeasts and other micro-organisms, and the notion of specificity, in which each fermentation could be traced to a specific micro-organism" (Dibner). "Pasteur's concept of fermentation as a biological process challenged the chemical theory of fermentation put forth by Liebig, which Pasteur was able to disprove with his experiments on alcoholic and acetic fermentation" (Norman).<br/><br/> <i>Provenance</i>: The earlier paper is inscribed by Pasteur to the French physicist and chemist Pierre-Guillaume-Camille Forthomme (1821-84): "A Monsieur Forthomme, Professeur au lycée de Nancy, souvenir affectueux, L. Pasteur." <br/><br/> "Pasteur's memoir ['Sur la Fermentation appelée lactique'] expressed the basic approach and point of view which informed all of his subsequent work on fermentation. After a historical introduction he began by claiming that "just as an alcoholic ferment exists-namely, brewer's yeast-which is found wherever sugar breaks down into alcohol and carbonic acid-so too there is a special ferment-a lactic yeast-always present when sugar becomes lactic acid" ... Throughout the memoir Pasteur more nearly assumed than proved that lactic yeast "is a living organism, ... that its chemical action on sugar corresponds to its development and organization," and that the nitrogenous substances in the fermenting medium served merely as its food. ". "8vo (219 x 135 mm), pp [1-3] 4-106; [1] 2-15 [1:blank but with manuscript annotations, probably by Forthomme], both offprints bound together in early 20th century cloth, first and final leaf with some browning.         Broadside. Begins: El General San Martin. Presencié la declaracion de la Independencia de los estados de Chile y el Perù ...

Weary from ten years of war, sacrifice, and then the politics of the nascent Peruvian republic, Gen. San Martin, liberator of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, and Peru, here announces his retirement from public life. An Argentine by birth, San Martin's introduction to war happened not in America but in Europe where he was serving in the Spanish army against England, Portugal, and finally France. After the peninsula fell to the French, he returned to America and fought with and soon led one of the main rebel armies. The struggle lasted more than a decade, but on 12 July 1821, he took Lima from the Royalists, saw Peru officially declared independent on the 28th, and was himself named "Protector of Peru" on 3 August. Just about a year later, on 22 September 1822, via this document, he resigned his position and retired permanently from public life and service."The presence of a lucky soldier . . . is feared by newly constituted states; [and] for my part, I am tired of hearing it said that I want to be the sovereign." "Peruvians: I leave you with an established national government; if you repose in it all of your confidence, count on triumph; if you don't, anarchy will devour you." And with that he left Peru, returned to Argentina briefly, then sailed to Europe where he lived in several cities, only once attempting to return to America, but always maintaining a keen interest in the fate of his native Argentina. Searches of WorldCat, NUC, CCILA, COPAC, and the Catálogo Colectivo del Patrimonio Bibliográfico locate two copies worldwide: one in the U.S., and one in Chile. There is a very old unverified report of a copy in the Biblioteca Nacional in Lima.

Memnon, Antigone und Oedip, v. J. Mayrhofer, und Am Grabe Anselmo's von Claudius. Für eine Singstimme mit Piano-Forte in Musik gesetzt [.] 6tes Werk.

Vienna, Diabelli und Comp., [1821]. - Oblong folio. 11 pp. Engraved throughout. First edition with Schubert's autograph checkmark ("Sch[ubert] m[anu] p[ropria] 220") on last page and printed dedication to the Austrian theater director Michael Vogl. Much rarer than Schubert's first publication ("Erlkönig"), published the same year: no copy in international auction records. Usually, Schubert's autograph checkmarks on his early works are strongly trimmed in the descenders; in the present copy, however, the ckeckmark is entirely untouched by the binder's knife. In the last copy of Schubert's Opus 6 to appear in the trade (Schneider 282 [1985], 128), the checkmark was almost entirely trimmed away. - The fact that the checkmarks are in Schubert's own hand has been disputed (cf. E. Hilmar, "Anmerkungen zu Schuberts Erstdrucken", in: Florilegium Musicologicum 1988, 145-154); however, Drüner has made a strong case for their authenticity: "The problem is indeed more complicated for opuses 1-7 and 96, and in these cases Hilmar&#146;s refusal is too categorical. His main arguments are not correct [.] It is almost certain that on the occasion of the publication of his opus 1-7, Schubert proudly followed the examples given to him by Johann Nepomuk Hummel, who signed his opuses [.] Hummel and Schubert were pupils of Salieri who taught both of them the highest editorial precision. Therefore, the idea of signing definitely came from Schubert [.]" (Otto Haas, cat. 40 [2003], p. 16). For a comparison of handwriting cf. the paraphs pictured by Drüner on p. 16 (Schubert's hand, identical with ours) and 17 (by another hand). Also cf. the included illustration of Schubert's identical paraph on his Opus 4 ("Brahms himself identifies Schubert's hand on his copy of 'Der Wanderer' [.]", Sotheby's, 17 May 2002, lot 169]. - Clean, entirely untrimmed copy. Extremely rare thus. Deutsch 541, 542, 504. Hirsch IV, 479. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Leçons sur le calcul diffcrentiel.Paris: Chez de Bure Frères, 1829.

First edition, very rare. Following his earlier textbooks, the <i>Cours d'Analyse</i> (1821) and <i>Rcsumc des Leçons</i> (1823), which provided the first rigorous formulation of the calculus of functions of a real variable, Cauchy in this work for the first time treats complex functions of a complex variable, defining their derivatives and extending to them many of the results of the differential calculus of a real variable obtained in the <i>Rcsumc</i>, most notably Taylor's theorem. "The discoveries with which Cauchy's name is most firmly associated in the minds of both pure and applied mathematicians are without doubt his fundamental theorems on complex functions" (DSB). Cauchy also develops here a fully-fledged theory of infinitesimals, in many ways anticipating work of du Bois-Reymond in the late 19th century.<br/><br/> The twenty-three <i>Leçons</i> of the present work present the results on differential calculus from the first part of the <i>Rcsumc</i>, but in much greater detail (and almost three times the length). Most significant, however, is that Cauchy here extends the results from the <i>Rcsumc</i> to the case of complex functions of a complex variable. This begins with the 11th <i>Leçon</i>, in which complex functions of a complex variable are introduced, the next <i>Leçon</i> giving the definition of the derivatives (and differentials) of such functions, and continues with the 13th <i>Leçon</i> which gives the extension of Taylor's theorem to the complex case. Further discussions of complex functions are found throughout the remaining <i>Leçons</i>. It is important to note that, although functions of a complex variable had been considered in earlier works by Cauchy, notably in his <i>Mémoire sur les intégrales définies, prises entre des limites imaginaires</i> (1825), those works had been concerned exclusively with the integration of such functions along paths in the complex plane (in modern terminology), and not on the properties of the functions themselves or their derivatives.. 4to (242 x 186 mm), pp. [iv] ii [2] 289 [3], contemporary half calf, gilt spine lettering, upper part of spine slightly sunned, some light spotting throughout but in general very good, paper label with numbering to spine, top-edge gilt, ex-libris of Henri Viellard to free end-paper, book plate of the Institut Catholique de Paris to front pastedown, first and final text leaf with small rubber stamp of the Institut

A treatise on the diseases of the chest . . . with a preface and notes by John Forbes, M.D.

London: T. and G. Underwood, 1821. Laennec, René Théophile Hyacinth (1781-1826). A treatise on the diseases of the chest, in which they are described according to their anatomical characters, and their diagnosis established on a new principle by means of acoustick instruments. Translated by John Forbes (1787-1861). 8vo. [4], vii-xl, [2], [1], 2-437, [3]pp. 8 engraved plates by John Pope Vibert (1797-1865). London: T. and G. Underwood, 1821. Modern half morocco gilt in antique style, in a half morocco drop-back box. Old library stamp almost invisibly removed from margin of title with no loss of text or margins. Plates slightly foxed but a fine copy from the Max Miller collection. Later owner?s bookplate on front pastedown. First Edition in English of Laennec?s De l?Auscultation médiate (1819), printed in an edition of only 500 copies, compared to the total printing of 3600 copies that comprised the two states of the first edition in French. Laennec?s invention of the stethoscope, which he announced in his 1819 treatise, provided the first adequate method for diagnosing diseases of the thorax and represented the greatest advance in physical diagnosis between Auenbrugger?s percussion and Röntgen?s discovery of x-rays. Forbes abridged parts of Laennec?s work, omitted others, and condensed the remainder, reducing it to about half of its original length. Although he greatly underestimated the influence the stethoscope was to have on medicine, Forbes nevertheless was as responsible as anyone else for introducing and popularizing the use of the stethoscope in the English-speaking world. According to a letter from Forbes to Laennec, all 500 copies of the small English printing had been sold by September 1823. This suggests that the initial reception of the stethoscope was slow in England; however, by the time of the second English edition (1827), demand for the instrument had widened exponentially. Bishop, ?Reception of the stethoscope and Laennec?s book,? Thorax (1981): 36, 487-92. Norman 1256.

Monuments Anciens et Modernes de l'Hindoustan

Paris: Didot, 1821. 2 volumes in 3, small folio. (14 7/8 x 10 3/4 inches). Text: half-titles in each volume, folding table in vol. 1, 4pp errata and 2pp list of plates in rear of vol. 2. Atlas: engraved title with a large vignette after Henry Salt, 3 engraved maps hand-colored in outline, 143 engraved plates (12 hand-colored, and including 24 plates after Thomas Daniell). Contemporary French red calf-backed red paper boards, flat spines in six compartments divided by gilt roll tools, lettered in gilt in the second and fourth compartments A beautiful copy of the very rare large-paper first edition of Langles definitive work on India, profusely illustrated and including plates after Thomas Daniell. A contemporary review described this work as follows: "Doubtless it was a vast undertaking to give a complete description of the immense country of Hindostan; to trace its history; to set forth the religion and the manners of its inhabitants; to study and to design its antique monuments and its populous cities: such an undertaking required the united knowledge and talents of the geographer, the philologist, the historian, the philosopher, and the archaeologist. Several estimable artists have already made us acquainted with the picturesque views and the romantic sites of this interesting country, with the various and singular costumes of the Hindoos, and their prodigious monuments. Many learned Indianists have developed the mysteries, till then but imperfectly known, of the Brahmanic theology; and the most celebrated travellers, judicious antiquaries, and well-informed officers, have in almost every part extended their inquiries to the most minute details of topography. However, not one of them has been able to present us with a complete view of the country, whose several parts they have described. Far be it from us to refuse the well-deserved need of praise to the major part of these authors; but one man alone, a man of superior talent, placed in a situation which enabled him to take in with a single glance, to collate, compare, and digest into one body all the materials which had been furnished by so many and such able writers, has succeeded in forming them into one beautiful and symmetrical edifice. M. Langles is the person to whom we allude" (Port Folio, vol. XVI, July to December 1823, p. 252). Langles was the most noted Orientalist in France and served as the keeper of the Oriental manuscripts at the Royal Library. Published in 26 parts beginning in 1813, Brunet cites three issues: regular paper at 15fr per part, papier velin at 24fr per part and grande papier velin at 36fr per part. The illustrations notably include 24 plates after Thomas Daniell, as well as other views of ancient monuments after Forbes and others. The colour plates are largely after Indian miniatures in the Royal Library collection and are richly hand-coloured and heightened with gold. Brunet III, 819-820.

(9 1/16 x 5 9/16 inches). 84 hand-coloured engraved plates (numbered from 2189-2272, plates #2189, #2194, #2203, #2208, #2217, #2222, #2231, #2232, #2236, #2245, #2250, #2259 and #2264 are folding), by Weddell, and others? after J. Curtis, P. Syme, W. Herbert and others. Contemporary red half morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, spine gilt A fine representative sample volume from the oldest illustrated botanical periodical still in production. "The reputation of the Magazine has always resided in the accuracy of its portrayal of plants. This pictorial record of garden and greenhouse plants from the temperate and tropical regions of the world has no rival.." (Desmond p.7) William Curtis had witnessed from personal experience that his clients refused to buy folio pictures of unassuming plants (vide. his Flora Londinensis) but he felt that they would subscribe to an octavo work which pictured the showy plants that filled their gardens: from this premise was born the Botanical Magazine in February 1787. The work was immediately successful, was published throughout the 19th and 20th centuries and is still produced to this day. The main glory of the Botanical Magazine has always been the coloured plates. Many of the greatest British botanical illustrators of the last two hundred years have had worked published in this periodical: the majority of the earliest plates are by Sydenham Edwards; other artists who followed in his footsteps include James Sowerby, John Curtis, William Jackson Hooker and, for much of the second half of the 19th century, Walter Hood Fitch. In the 20th century the great tradition was continued by Lilian Snelling, Margaret Stones and others.         The Natural History of the rarer Lepidopterous Insects of Georgia. Including their systematic characters, the particulars of their several metamorphoses, and the plants on which they feed. Collected from the observations of Mr John Abbot, many years resident in that country, by James Edward Smith

London: printed by T. Bensley for J. Edwards, Cadell and Davies and J. White, 1821. 2 volumes, folio. (15 7/8 x 12 1/4 inches). Parallel titles and text in French and English. 104 hand-coloured engraved plates by John Harris after Abbot, some heightened with gum-arabic. Expertly bound to style in half calf over contemporary marbled paper covered boards, flat spines in six compartments divided by gilt triple fillets and roll tools, red-brown morocco labels in the second compartments, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt A fine copy of John Abbot's masterpiece: the earliest illustrated monograph devoted to the butterflies and moths of North America. John Abbot was one of the most important and prolific of the early American natural history artists. Born in London in 1751, Abbot developed his interest in natural history and drawing as a child. His curiosity about the natural world was encouraged by his parents who were relatively wealthy (at one time the family library included copies of Mark Catesby's Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands as well as George Edwards' Natural History of Uncommon Birds and Gleanings of Natural History ). Having received sponsorship from the Royal Society of London and the collectors Thomas Martyn and Dru Drury, Abbot sailed for Virginia in July 1773, with orders for both actual specimens and drawings of the local insects. For the next two years he continued to collect and paint, sending home three insect collections, although only one arrived safely. The loss of these two valuable collections at sea together with the worry over political unrest in Virginia led Abbot to move to Georgia: he settled in St. George Parish (later Burke County), Georgia in December 1775. Abbot traveled widely throughout Georgia devoting his time to the study of the natural flora and fauna. The constant flow of specimen collections and watercolours of insects, and later of birds, ensured that his name became known to many of the foremost natural scientists and collectors of the day, both in America and Europe. Sir James Edward Smith, co-founder and first president of the Linnaean Society of London, recognised Abbot's talents, and responded enthusiastically to Abbot's desire to publish an illustrated work on the butterflies and moths of Georgia, agreeing to edit the work for Abbot. Smith, in the preface to the present work, praised Abbot highly as the first author "since the celebrated Merian", to illustrate and describe the lepidoptera of the American continent scientifically, including both representations of the caterpillars and "the plants on which each insect chiefly feeds." The work is also valuable for the numerous first hand comments and observations that Abbot has added. Like the Botfield copy, this copy was issued circa 1822, with the plates on J. Whatman Turkey Mills wove paper. Abbot's water-colours are amongst the finest natural history illustrations ever made: elegant and scientifically accurate, they rank with those of his famous contemporaries, William Bartram and Alexander Wilson. William Swainson described Abbot as one of the United States' most important natural history artists, as "a most assiduous collector, and an admirable draftsman of insects. [This] work is one of the most beautiful that this or any other country can boast of" (quoted by Sabin). Arnold Arboretum, p. 27; BM(NH) I, p. 2l; Dunthorne 287; cf.         Entdeckungs-Reise in die Süd-See und nach der Berings-Strasse zur Erforschung einer nordöstlichen Durchfahrt. Unternommen in den Jahren 1815, 1816, 1817, und 1818

Weimar: Gebrüder Hoffmann, 1821. 3 volumes in one, quarto. (10 5/8 x 8 5/8 inches). 18pp. subscribers list. 6 engraved maps (5 folding), 20 aquatint plates (19 hand-coloured, 4 folding) after Ludovik Choris, Eschscholtz and others, 2 folding letterpress tables. Text uncut. Modern paper-backed blue boards Provenance: Thomas W. Streeter (booklabel, pencil notes; his sale, part VI, Sotheby's Park Bernet, 22 April 1969, lot 3511) Thomas W. Streeter's copy of the first edition, coloured issue of Kotzebue's important second Russian circumnavigation: a cornerstone work of Pacific exploration with important descriptions of Hawaii, California and Alaska. Kotzebue's expedition in the ship Rurick, sponsored by Count Romanzoff, sailed from Kronstadt at the end of July 1815, rounded Cape Horn and visited Chile, Easter Island, the Marshall Islands, Hawaii, and the North American coast, making an unsuccessful search for a northwest passage. The return was made via New Archangel, California, Hawaii, Marianas, Philippines, and St. Helena. This famous narrative is particularly important for its descriptions of Alaska and California (including the first scientific account of the California state flower, the Golden Poppy). Kotzebue describes the missions in California, and the work is considered one of the most important early accounts of that state. The work is of great importance in the early exploration of Alaska. "Rich in early original source material on Alaska ... Kotzebue belonged to that group of outstanding Russian naval officers of the first half of the nineteenth century, which included Kruzenshtern, Golovnin, Lisianskii, Sarychev, and others..." (Lada-Mocarski). "It was on this voyage that Kotzebue discovered Kotzebue Sound in Alaska, thinking for a time as he sailed east that he had found the long sought north-east passage" (Streeter). The Hawaiian portion is extensive and contains important observations on life and customs during the reign of Kamehameha I, whose famous "red vest" portrait by Choris is one of the illustrations. The account of Albert von Chamisso, the expedition naturalist, includes important information about flora and fauna, as well as the Indians and the work of the missionaries. There is also a comparative vocabulary table for the languages of some of the islanders. As a record of historical import, and as a collection of significant maps and beautiful plates, this work is one of the prime desiderata of Pacific voyages. Three distinct issues of the first edition were published: eighty-eight copies were produced on very fine "Velin papier" with the plates hand coloured (issue A); an issue on regular hand-made laid paper, of which a limited number of copies have coloured plates (issue B); and an issue on laid paper with the portrait plates coloured, but the folding plates in sepia aquatint (issue C). The present copy of the work is a fine example of the second issue with the plates hand coloured. This fine copy of Kotzebue appeared at auction in part six of the famed sale of the Thomas W. Streeter collection, realizing $550 in 1969. Borba de Moraes I, 438; Brunet III:693; Forbes I, 525; Hill 943; Howes K-258; Kroepelien 670; Lada-Mocarski 80; Lipperheide La 7; Sabin 38284; Streeter sale VI:3511 (this copy); Cowan p. 334; Zamorano Eighty 48.

Sabin 38284. Brunet III, 693. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
