Schmidt.Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1868.

First separate edition, presentation copy from the translator, of the first vernacular translation of the famous Appendix by Janos Bolyai, one of the most important works in the history of mathematics. This Appendix, together with the independent work of Nikolai Lobachevsky, constitute the founding works of non-Euclidean geometry.

Janos began working on his new geometry in 1820. Although his father Farkas had himself worked on the possibilities of a non-Euclidean geometry from his earliest days as a mathematician in Göttingen, and had corresponded with Gauss on the subject (even sending him a manuscript entitled Theoria parallelarum), he tried to discourage Janos from attempting to prove or refute Euclid's fifth postulate: 'You should not tempt the parallels in this way. I know this way until its end - I also have measured this bottomless night. I have lost in it every light, every joy of my life ... You should shy away from it as if from lewd discourse, it can deprive you of all your leisure, your health, your peace of mind and your entire happiness. This infinite darkness might perhaps absorb a thousand giant Newtonian towers, it will never be light on earth, and the miserable human race will never have something absolutely pure, not even geometry' (quoted from DSB).

Despite his reservations, Farkas sent the manuscript of Janos's work to Gauss, who replied that he could not praise it because he himself had reached the same conclusions some 30 years earlier although he had not published his discovery! This assertion so discouraged Janos that it effectively ended his career as a creative mathematician, but his manuscript was published in 1832 as Appendix. Scientiam spatii absolute veram exhibens: a veritate aut falsitate Axiomatis XI Euclidei (a priori haud unquam decidenda) independentem to his father's large textbook Tentamen juventutem studiosam in elementa matheseos purae, elementaris ac sublimioris, methodo intuitiva, evidentiaque huic propria, introducendi. Printed in a small edition (probably around 150 copies) by an obscure Hungarian college publisher, in a small town in Transylvania, the work remained a forgotten masterpiece until, 35 years later, Riemann's paper Über die Hypothesen, welche der Geometrie zu Grunde liegen reawakened interest in this field.

This translation first appeared at the end of 1867 in Mémoires de la Société des Sciences physique et naturelles de Bordeaux (pp. 189-248) with the present first separate edition appearing a few months later. The translation is preceded by a "Translator's Note" (pp. 5-6) and "Notice on the life and work of the Hungarian mathematicians Wolfgang [Farkas] Bolyai and Janos Bolyai" by Franz Schmidt (pp. 7-21).

After gaining a doctorate for research in celestial mechanics at the Sorbonne in 1855, Jules Hoüel (1823-86) was appointed to the chair of pure mathematics in the Faculty of Science at Bordeaux in 1859 and held this post until his death. Hoüel became interested in non-Euclidean geometry once he had been made aware of the work of Bolyai and Lobachevsky. He published his own Essai d'une exposition rationnelle des principes fondamentaux de la géométrie in 1863, a copy of which fell by chance into the hands of one Franz Schmidt, a young architect from Temesvár in Hungary. Schmidt wrote to Hoüel for advice on continuing his mathematical studies; Hoüel answered helpfully, and later sought Schmidt's help in procuring Bolyai's work. Schmidt succeeded in finding two copies of Bolyai's work for Hoüel: one Hoüel proceeded to translate himself, the other he sent to Giuseppe Battaglini, asking him to make Bolyai's work known in Italy. Battaglini published his Italian translation of the Appendix in Giornale di matematiche in 1868.

Giusto Bellavitis (1803-80) is known for his geometrical calculus which influenced Grassmann's Ausdehnungslehre, for his contributions to algebraic geometry, and for his work in the history of mathematics (he vindicated Pietro Cataldi by attributing to him the invention of continued fractions).

DSB II: 269-71; Bonola, Non-Euclidean geometry, pp. 122-5; Dibner 116; Evans 13; Horblit 69b; Norman 259; Parkinson pp. 295 & 296 (all referring to the first edition of 1832).. Large 8vo (254 x 166 mm), pp. 64, uncut in the original blue printed wrappers, inscribed by the translator Jules Houel to Giusto Bellavitis (1803-80) on half-title

Gio. Francesco Spannocchi Piccolomini, Cavaliere dell'Insigne ordine di Santo Stefano..

Livorno, presso Pietro Ciardi, 1820 circa.

London: John Murray, 1820. First edition. Octavo, three quarters leather over marbled boards. Gilt titles to the spine and gilt tooling. In near fine condition. A very bright copy. There can be no doubt that [Malthus'] importance for economists today rests mainly on his Principles of Political Economy. It was because of this latter work that J. M. Keynes (1933) reinstated Malthus as a major figure in modern economic thought" (New Palgrave). "One of the founders of modern economics," Malthus was credited by Keynes with framing the theory "that a lack of effective demand can cause economic crises" (PMM 251).

        METHODE DE LYRE et Romances.

s.l.n.d. (c.1820). - MANUSCRIT in-4 oblong. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

In truth, it is this consideration only that induces us to give Lord Byron's poems a place in our Review, beside our desire to counsel him, that he do forthwith abandon poetry... But whatever judgment [sic] may be passed on the poems of this noble minor, it seems we must take them as we find them, and be content; for they are the last we shall ever have from him.'
