1820 - Toulouse, Vieusseux, 1820. (L.-A. Fabre). Selections of a Father for the Use of His Children. In Prose and Verse

New York: Southwick and Pelsue, 1820. New York: Southwick and Pelsue, 1820. First edition. Full Calf. Very Good. New York: Southwick and Pelsue, 1820. 408 pages. Original calf worn, expertly rehinged with spine relaid (hinges appear starting), staining on title page, otherwise, internally, a Very Good copy.& & FIRST EDITION of the earliest book for young people by an American Jew. Isaac Gomez, Jr. (1768–1831), came from an illustrious Jewish family of early America. His great-grandfather Lewis Moses Gomez (1654/60–1740) escaped Portugal and arrived in New York in 1703. Isaac Gomez was an active member of the Sephardic Jewish community in New York, as well as a poet. Although he experienced financial difficulties, Gomez was a contented family man. His wife Abby was the daughter of Aaron Lopez, a prominent merchant in Rhode Island. Over the course of his life, Gomez compiled a handwritten book of quotations from the Bible that demonstrated the truth of Judaism, entitled God Is One and His Name One: Quotations from Scripture to Prove God to Be One and the Truth of the Jewish Faith. That book stands as powerful testimony to Judaism’s vitality and to Gomez’s pride in his Jewish identity. & At the beginning of Selections of a Father for the Use of His Children, Gomez presents several favorable endorsements of the book, including one from John Adams, the second president of the United States. Adams comments of Gomez’s work: & & “Montezillo, April 10, 1820.& Mr. Isaac Gomez, Jun.& Sir, Your ‘Selections of a Father for the Use of his Children,’ are worthy to be presented by every Father to every Child, and deserve a place in every family, there is not an impure or mean thought in the whole book—there is science, literature and taste in it enough to form the best characters of men and women—it is a collection of the wisdom of ages and of nations.& The book has solid merit, and I wish it were in the hands of every child who can read it. To me it shall be a manual on my table, in which I can constantly find almost any of the most beautiful morsels ancient and modern, which would take me hours in rummaging volumes to find without it.& Accept my best thanks for your valuable present, and my best wishes for your success in the publication.& I am sir your humble servant,& JOHN ADAMS.”& The resounding praise of Gomez’s book from President Adams testifies to its status as a significant literary monument of early America. & Selections of a Father for the Use of His Children contains varied texts from the most important philosophers, scientists, and writers throughout history, including many excerpts from Plato, Aristotle, Pythagoras, Epictetus, Hippocrates, Shakespeare, Dryden, and Milton. Gomez rounds out his collection with sharp observations from writers closer to his own time: the novelist Laurence Sterne, the essayist Samuel Johnson, and the poets Alexander Pope, Robert Burns, William Cowper, and William Collins. & Many of the pieces in the book serve as moral or practical guidance for young men and women. An excerpt from Hamlet entitled “Caution to Young Females” warns young women not to offer their affections too easily, and a selection from the Roman philosopher Seneca entitled “Every Man’s Conscience Is His Judge” explains that conscience will be a harsh judge of the self even if others fail to recognize and punish a wicked deed. Through many other enlightening passages, Gomez introduces his young readers to chemistry, geology, biology, medicine, and economics. By means of this comprehensive survey of human knowledge, Isaac Gomez thus provided young Jewish Americans with an educational resource unparalleled in the early-nineteenth-century United States. Gomez also demonstrated to Jews and non-Jews alike that an American Jew was fully capable of mastering the entire spectrum of human knowledge and presenting it from an avowedly Jewish perspective. & RARITY: Robert Singerman’s Bibliography Judaica Americana 0322 cites six institutional copies.&

Second edition. William Hone (1780-1842) was born into a family of pious, bible-reading dissenters. His beliefs were shaken in the later 1790s by radical religious and political thought. Externally, generally smart with some shelfwear and wear to the spine. Internally, generally firmly bound with binding loosening in places. Some minor spotting to first and last pages only. The Life of Samuel Johnson, LL. D

nbsp;London -G. Walker, 1820. nbsp;London -G. Walker, 1820 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. This biography is regarded as an important development of the modern genre of biography; many have claimed it as the greatest biography written in English. Complete in four volumes, reading copy. Regardless of these actions, modern biographers have found Boswell's biography as an important source of information. Condition: In a cloth binding.
