DIVINA COMMEDIA Illustrata di Note Da Romualdo Zotti [Dell Inferno; Del Purgatorio; Il Paradiso; Vita di Dante]

London Presso di R. Zotti 1819-1820 - 3 volumes. The second of Zotti’s two rare Italian editions printed in England, revised and with expanded notes and commentary. With an engraved portrait frontispiece of Dante in volume one. 8vo, full contemporary dark calf, the boards with a rolled frame in blind, the spines gilt tooled flat bands creating compartments with either gilt lettering or central gilt tooled devices, fine marbled endpapers and blind stippled turn-ins and board edges. lii, 463; 455; 491 pp. A fine and beautiful set, internally as fresh, clean and solid as could be found, appearing nearly unused and beautifully preserved. The contemporary calf bindings very handsome and proper, also beautifully preserved, one hinge of volume three quite tender, easily repairable. RARE, OF ZOTTI’S TWO PRINTINGS OF DANTE THE TOTAL NUMBER LISTED IN LIBRARY HOLDINGS IS ONLY 43 COPIES, AND THIS EDITION BEING ONLY 23 OF THOSE. Of these listed, some are incomplete and most do not have the portrait of Dante. Zotti, an Italian printer living in London but publishing in Italian was an important figure in the importation of Italian literature into the English speaking world. It is in no way surprising that this, Zotti’s second edition of Dante, was printed the same year as the first complete modern English translation. Zotti’s Dante includes important notes and commentary, Zotti’s introduction, and a ‘Vita’ edited from that of Girolamo Tiraboschi. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

PROPOSED RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR THE EXERCISE AND MANOEUVRES OF THE LANCE.

Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, London 1820 - "Compiled entirely from the Polish system, instituted by Marshal Prince Joseph Poniatowski, and General Count Corvin Krasinski, and adapted to the formations, movements, and exercise of the British Cavalry. To which is affixed an historical account of the most celebrated banners and orders of chivalry, being emblematic and descriptive of the origin and honor formerly attached to bearing gonfanons, or gonfalons, chivalric banners, and lances." Marbled endpapers. The attractive old binding is probably mid-nineteenth century. Spine with six panels, two leathers spine labels and gilt rules. Top edge gilt , others untrimmed. Fine hand-colored frontispiece, a folded engraving of Poniatowski astride his horse in full regalia. Nineteen full-page plates throughout the text. Bound with the half-title. Very light foxing and spotting. Several manuscript corrections in ink in an old hand. [ blank, half-title, frontispiece, xiii, {iii}, 149, blank]. Quite a handsome copy of a rare work on the use of the lance. OCLC Worldcat lists five libraries throughout the world with the book. ABPC and ESTC list no copies. Montmorency (1778-1827) was a strong proponent of the use of the lance. He studied the Polish system and recommended it to be used in the exercises of the British Cavalry. In 1816 four regiments of British Lancer was formed. This publication was to be used as a correct guide. Thimm 187. Quarto [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Red rules on right and left (faded). (5, 1 blank), 39, (1 blank) ll.; f. 39 is blank except for the foliation; apparently lacking a dedication leaf preceding the first leaf. 4° (21.5 x 16 cm.), contemporary crimson straight-grained morocco (faint circular stain on front cover; minor wear at corners, occasionally elsewhere; single tiny round wormhole near head of spine, covers a bit warped), flat spine gilt with black leather lettering-piece, covers with rich gilt borders and small gilt stylized wheel or floral vignette at center, edges of covers double-ruled in gilt, marbled endleaves, all text-block edges gilt. Very attractive and clean. Internally in fine condition. Overall very good to fine. Foliated by the same hand as the text. Stamp and stamped accession number of Dr. José Bayolo Pacheco de Amorim on front free endleaf verso. ---- Manuscript copy of a five-act tragedy in rhymed verse. The translator, Victor Profirio de Borja, was a Portuguese actor who emigrated to Brazil in the early nineteenth century. Around 1815 he attempted to establish a rival to the Real Teatro São João (founded in 1813), buying land for the purpose of building a theater in Rua Lavradio, Rio de Janeiro. Borja acted in Rio de Janeiro in the 1820s, and according to Sacramento Blake, published a small folio volume entitled @Plano para a edificação de um teatro publico, Rio de Janeiro, 1824. He is considered a Brazilian by virtue of having been in Brazil and sworn allegiance to the 1824 Brazilian constitution. It is not known if this translation of Medêa was staged in Rio de Janeiro at the time. The first leaf contains a dedication signed by Borja to an "amigo", including twelve lines of verse addressing the dedicatee with the familiar form of "you." The leaf preceding this, which presumably had the name of the dedicatee, has been removed.Longepierre's @Médée was first published in 1694 and performed that year at the Théâtre de la rue des Fossés Saint-Germain, Paris. Despite Longpierre's denials, it bears strong similarities to Corneille's version, which had been published in 1639. The major differences are in Act IV,where the character Aegeus is eliminated and Medea's reason for vengeance toward Jason is developed. In the preface Longepierre directly answers the accusation that he copied this work from Corneille. He says he is going back to the style of the ancients for drama: modern, frivolous style is inappropriate for tragedy. If his @Medea is similar to Corneille's, it's because both of them use Seneca's @Medea as their starting point. He admires Corneille, he says, but this play isn't based on Corneille's work. When Borja wrote his translation in the early nineteenth century, the Longepierre version was more popular than that of Corneille. Performed only sixteen times until 1728, the revival of the Longepierre play was greatly enhanced through the acting abilites of Mlle. Balicour in the leading role. It remained in the repertory for 90 years, being produced 146 times, and was also parodied by Donique and Riccoboni in Italian, @La Méchante femme, October 29, 1728, at the Theatre Italien. Both La Harpe and Voltaire (with reservations) preferred this version to Corneille's.M. Hilaire-Bernard de Requeleyne, Baron de Longepierre (1659-1721), was a tutor to French princes and considered the finest bibliophile of his generation. His Greek was sufficient to publish translations of Anacreon, Sappho, Bion, and Moschus. Greatly interested in theater, he wrote @Parallèle de Corneille et Racine, 1686. In addition to @Médée, he composed @Sésostris (1694) and @Electre (1702).---- See Sacramento Blake, VII, 382, giving the name as Victor Porphirio de Borja. Significant parts of the above are based on research provided by Gordon Hollis, and we thank him for permission to use same. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

A Letter to Earl Bathurst, Secretary of State for the Colonial Department

James Ridgway, London 1820 - Octavo, fine condition in Aquarius binding of full navy calf, gilt spine. Bennet's attack on Macquarie precipitating the Bigge enquiry. An important early colonial work, Bennet's attack on the administration of Governor Macquarie, was an important document that precipitated the enquiry by Commissioner Bigge and the end of Macquarie's command in New South Wales. Bennet (1777-1836) was a British politician who led a crusade to reduce crime, investigate prisons and transportation while reforming the London police. With a charge to 'to diminish the sum of human misery' Bennet worked tirelessly to expose maladministration and archaic practices in British gaols and the transportation system generally. In this published address to Lord Bathurst, Macquarie is accused of extravagance and autocracy. However, writing from England, Bennet relied upon prejudiced testimonies from Macquarie's enemies (including the indefatigable Reverend Samuel Marsden) and ultimately presented a biased version of events. Although Bennet's work in England was broad and enlightened, his critique of convict administration became a tool for colonial 'exclusives' who wished to end Macquarie's term as governor of New South Wales. A Letter to Earl Bathurst? remains a highly informative account of transportation and early colonial society generally, it includes useful statistical information including population figures, a civil list of persons holding government posts and shipping arrivals and departures for the years 1819-20. Furthermore, the appendix prints letters from Governor Macquarie, Samuel Marsden, W.H. Moore and others. Marsden's letter concerning affairs at the Parramatta hospital is a fine work of vitriol, asserting 'For the number of persons in the hospital, I do not believe that there is such an infamous brothel in the whole universe?I behold drunkenness, whoredom, sickness and death?in the room where the dead are lying, debaucheries are going on.'.         Contestacion del Egercito Libertador del Peru a la despedida de las Chilenas. @[text begins:] No nace impresion tan grata la luz pura / En quien la vé despues de haber cegado .

(Santiago de Chile), n.pr., (1820). - Printed on bluish paper. Caption title. In verse. 4 pp. 4°, unbound. In fine condition. ---- FIRST EDITION [?]. There appears to be another edition of about the same time, but probably slightly later, also without any imprint (but in all likelihood printed in Peru), as well as a 16º edition. The Chilean expedition to liberate Peru from Spanish rule set out from Valparaiso on 20 August 1820.       Philadelphia: Samuel F. Bradford, 1820. First American Edition. Half Leather. Very Good binding. Quarto. The maps have been collated against the index: there are 60 folding, or double-page maps (lacking only 1--the map of The United States), 1 single cartographic "plate" and 10 engraved portraits of American statesmen; the "plate" and the portraits are not called for in the index; backed in leather with corners and marbled paper over boards, the book has been tastefully rebacked with most of the original backstrip mounted; the maps are generally toned and foxed, a few more so than others, but are attractive nonetheless; the engraved portraits are similarly toned, a few more so than others; the general index to the Cyclopaedia is included in this volume; digital images can be made available upon request.         Il carnevale di Roma.

1820 - Rome, F. Bourlié, 1820. Folio. (4) pp. & 20 engraved plates. Slightly worn green contemporary half morocco with gilt spine and sprinkled edges. Rubbed at top and bottom of spine. Corners bumped and with most of the skin rubbed away. Somewhat soiled and with occasional stains throughout. Hjalmar Mörner (1794-1837) travelled in Europe studying art in 1816-29 . He made a long stopover in Rome as house-guest and friend of the Swedish sculptor Johan Niclas Byström. There he made these fine pictures full of detail. Byström received the pencilled originals as a gift and he put them up on his walls at home like a frieze. The plates are meant as a sequence, starting at Piazza del Popolo and ends at the present Piazza Venezia. A few copies were handcoloured by the artist. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A handmade replica of the precious original in the State Library of New South Wales

Jingdezhen: Hordern House, 2013. Hordern House, in conjunction with the State Library of New South Wales, announce the creation of a replica of the famous Chinese export-ware bowl from the Macquarie period. The Sydney Punchbowl was officially launched at the Library in October 2013 by the Governor of New South Wales, Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO. Only 25 examples will ever be available for purchase. Only 25 examples will ever be available for purchase. One of the most fascinating of all the unique treasures held in the State Library of New South Wales, the Sydney Punchbowl is a fine large porcelain bowl manufactured in China around 1820. The bowl is decorated with a panoramic scene of Sydney Cove around the outside and a group of Aboriginal figures on the inside, and finished with exquisite floral and gilded banding. Hand-made for Hordern House by Chinese craftsmen in the so-called "porcelain city" of Jingdezhen, the design, shape and hand-painted colours and gilding are as true and accurate a representation of the unique and beautiful original as is possible. The magnificent bowl stands 17 cm tall with a diameter of 45 cm. Accompanying each bowl will be a finely produced monograph in a special limited edition by Elizabeth Ellis OAM (former Mitchell Librarian and now an emeritus curator of the State Library of New South Wales). Contact Hordern House for further details and to view the bowl. You can download an information sheet and order form below, or contact us for a copy of the full colour brochure.

        Principles of Political Economy

London: John Murray,, 1820. Considered with a view to their practical application. Octavo. Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, spine gilt in compartments, titles and fleurons to spine gilt, edges sprinkled red. Without the final advert leaf. Spine and boards lightly rubbed, slight wear to edges of boards, top edge dusty, very light foxing throughout. An excellent copy. First edition. The book was conceived as a series of tracts rather than a comprehensive and systematic treatise, though Malthus published it to establish his own position against that of Ricardo, with whom he had been having an ongoing debate about the nature of labour, demand and profit. "In his 'Principles of Political Economy', Malthus was proposing investment in public work and private luxury as a means of increasing effective demand, and hence as a palliative to economic distress. The nation, he thought, must balance the power to produce and the will to consume" (DSB). "The Principles had only a limited impact at the time, and was severely criticized by J. R. McCulloch and Ricardo; the latter prepared extensive critical notes. But more recently it has received greater recognition, largely as a result of the comments by J. M. Keynes in the 1930s. Keynes argued that Malthus's theory of effective demand provided a scientific explanation of unemployment, and that the hundred-year domination of Ricardo over Malthus had been a disaster for the progress of economics. Keynes believed that if economics had followed Malthus instead of being constrained by Ricardo in an artificial groove, the world would be a much wiser and richer place" (ODNB).

"Containing a complete History and Picturesque Description of a portion of Country so full of curious and interesting circumstances, as well as so resplendent for its landscape, grandeur, and beauty.         Natives pursuing Kangaroos in the neighbourhood of Sydney , New South Wales

[England]: circa, 1820. Single leaf from a child's scrapbook, 215 x 260 mm., the engravings and captions neatly cut-out and pasted down, views to both sides of the sheet; foxing and tears to the edges with marginal loss, but charming. Nonplussed kangaroos on Sydney harbour. Marvellous page from a child's scrap book with a naïve scene depicting "Natives pursuing Kangaroos in the neighbourhood of Sydney…". Perhaps as had always been intended, in this example the figures and captions have been carefully cut out and pasted on to a blank album page. We have still not been able to identify the name of the book or album from which the sheet was taken, but it is interesting to speculate as to the original source image. One plausible contender is the scene of "Natives of Botany Bay" from Phillip's Voyage (1789), but perhaps the most likely is the "Hunting the Kangaroo" plate published in Foreign Field Sports (1813). The warrior at far left certainly bears some resemblance to the latter, although it has to be said that the second warrior and the background are both very different, as are the kangaroos, which are here represented as amiable and doe-eyed, one with a pair of joeys peeking from her pouch. On the verso is a bloodthirsty scene from the same series, "A Lion attacking a herd of Zebras". This is a rare image. The State Library of New South Wales lists an uncoloured sheet, while the Nan Kivell collection has a coloured version (NK 1350); the latter was exhibited in the World Upside Down in 2000, where the tentative date of circa 1820 was suggested. Our example has very similar but not identical colouring to the Nan Kivell copy.
