        Seran Rajas Palace

Rodwell & Martin, London 1820 - Hand-coloured aquatint by Robert Havell & Son, after Fraser. A fine example of a view taken during the first recorded journey by Europeans through the Himalayas. In 1815, following the end of the war with Nepal, Fraser and his brother William, a political agent, spent two months on a tour of the Himalayas. Their journey took the brothers along the river valleys of the Himalayas, with occasional sorties to higher latitudes and as far as the sources of both the Jumna and Ganges rivers. In this view, Fraser depicts the Raja of Sarahan's summer residence, high above the Sutlej River. This is in Himachal Pradesh, India. The raja, Mehendra Singh Teeka, was 8 years old at the time of the Frasers visit. The British had recently restored his kingdom to him, and for a certain specified amount, protected it for him. The raja therefore was happy to meet the visitors and to have his palace depicted. This view is from the spectacular Views in the Himala Mountains which contains twenty of Havell's masterly plates worked up from sketches made on the spot by Fraser. In style the plates are similar to, and very much a match for Henry Salt's and the Daniell brothers' large scale views published 10 and 20 years earlier. This was a deliberate strategy by the publishers who drew attention to the similarities in their advertisements which describe the work as being `In Elephant Folio, uniform with Daniell's Oriental Scenery , and Salt's Views in Abyssinia .' Cf. Abbey Travel II, 498.

The catalogue contains numerous illustrations of photographic and related equipment. Contemporary half - calf and marbled boards, rebacked; interior excellent. The rare first edition of Le Gray?s influential manual including instructions on the preparation of waxed - paper negatives, together with the greatly expanded second edition and a substantial catalogue of cameras and photographic equipment from the leading retailer of the period. No copy of the first edition is listed in either OCLC or COPAC. Le Gray (1820 - 1884), although trained as a painter, became one of the most famous early photographers. As early as 1848 he was experimenting with the use of paper for negatives. He developed a waxed - paper negative that produced sharper - focus prints. As an alternative to the glass plates used in the wet - collodion process, the dry wax - paper negative was more practical for travelers. It could be prepared days in advance and could be developed days after the photograph was taken. It also allowed for differing colorations and produced a softer, more aesthetically pleasing result than did the glass negative. ?The first of his four treatises, published in 1850, boldly?"and correctly?"asserted that ?the entire future of photography is on paper.? In that volume, Le Gray outlined a variation of William Henry Fox Talbot?s process calling for the paper negatives to be waxed prior to sensitization, thereby yielding a crisper image? (Daniel, Malcolm, Gustave Le Gray (1820?"1884), In Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History, http: / / www.metmuseum.org / toah / hd / gray / hd_gray.htm. According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, ?Le Gray (1820 - 1884) was the central figure in early French photography,? as well as teacher to many other photographers, including Charles Nègre, Henri Le Secq, Émile Pecarrere, Olympe Aguado, Nadar, Adrien Tournachon, and Maxime Du Camp. In 1850, he took the first official photograph of a French head of state, Louis Napoléon Bonaparte. He then became the family?s official photographer. A year later, Le Gray was put in charge of a team assembled by the French Commission of Historical Monuments to make a photographic inventory of French monuments. Le Gray founded the Société Héliographique, the first photographic organization in the world, and later joined the Société Française de Photographie. During the last two decades of his life, Le Gray traveled throughout the Mediterranean, Lebanon, Syria and Egypt, taking photographs of world leaders and other celebrities, as well as images of various wars. Included in this work is a wonderful, very early catalogue of photographic and related equipment offered by the publishers, Lerebours and Secretan, which contains numerous illustrations plus prices of the equipment offered.

French text, 8vo, approximately 190 x 125 mm, 7½ x 5 inches, woodcut title vignette, 4 woodcut illustrations printed on 3 pages, 1 large folding plate of the Minerve, plus at the end 1 EXTRA folding plate (probably a facsimile) of a fantasy flying machine which seems to come from an Italian work, pages: 36, (4), bound in modern half calf over cloth sides, raised bands and gilt decoration to spine, contrasting gilt lettered labels, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Corners and hinges very slightly rubbed, small blemish to upper hinge, front inner paper hinge cracked, 2 very small repairs to edge of front endpaper, slightly foxed throughout, mostly light, the folding plate is faintly foxed at the edges, there is a small light stain at the top outer corner, a tiny piece missing from the lower corner and a very short closed edge tear at the inner edge (repaired on reverse), the unnumbered illustrated pages at the end are very faintly foxed at the edges, otherwise a very good copy. Étienne - Gaspard Robert (1763 - 1837) was a famous Belgian stage magician pioneering projection techniques for phantasmagoria shows, at the same time pursuing an academic career as professor of physics at Liege, specialising in optics. He also had vast experience with balloons - he was Commandant des Aerostiers during the war, serving under General Jourdain in Belgium and Holland in 1803 / 4, providing valuable observations on the enemy troops and movements from tethered and untethered balloon observing stations; he is also regarded by some as the inventor of the parachute. There was nothing about the balloon described in this pamphlet that would have worked, and Robertson knew it, intending his work to be more of caricature of existing attempts in flight than as a science fiction creation. The balloon was to have been one of the biggest ever designed with a 150 foot diameter for a load of 161,000 lbs including 60 scientists, plus some ladies who have their own quarters, and it was to be fitted out with a library, church, exercise area, chemistry laboratory, music room, food and wine storage, kitchen, the only place where a fire is allowed, etc. It is also provided with a small ship underneath for sea landings. The first edition which is extremely scarce was first published in Vienne, France in 1804. This is mentioned on the title page and see Tissandier, Bibliographie Aeronautique page 33. Sehr selten!

Archive of manuscripts relating to navigation and longitude, with particular notice of Mendoza y Rios, and Freycinet's translation of an important essay

[France], 1820. Five manuscripts of varying lengths and sizes (see note) and some loose sheets; very good, loosely held in a later file headed "Astronomie et Navigation" with Archive de Laage stamp and other notes. Freycinet's unrecorded translation of an early work on the "Reflecting Circle" A fascinating group of five manuscripts on improvements to measuring longitude at sea, including Freycinet's own translation of an important essay by Mendoza y Rios that first appeared in London in 1801.At least one of the other manuscripts has significant additions in Freycinet's own hand, while the remaining three appear to have been sent to him by correspondents, including one addressed to him as commander of the Uranie. The group would appear to date from circa 1800-1820, and in fact is most likely associated with the interregnum between Freycinet's two voyages, when he was working in Paris not only on the publication of the Baudin voyage account, but was also closely involved with all manner of innovations at the Ministry of the Marine: Freycinet was appointed to the French Bureau des Longitudes early in the century, an appointment which presumably helps explain why he retained this group in his private archive. It is possible, perhaps even likely, that this group of manuscripts travelled with Freycinet on the Uranie voyage. The main manuscript in the group relates to the Reflecting Circle, an important astronomical measuring device used for measuring longitude, first perfected by the German astronomer Tobias Mayer in 1752, and subsequently improved by Jean-Charles de Borda as the "Borda Circle", much used in the late eighteenth century. In 1801 the Spanish astronomer Mendoza y Rios further improved the device by the addition, in particular, of a vernier scale. Freycinet would certainly have used the instrument (and in fact, a copy of the 1787-published work by Borda explaining the use of his improved device is known to have been in Freycinet's personal library). However, critically, the fact that he personally made a translation of the Mendoza y Rios article from the original English has not hitherto been recorded, marking the present manuscript out as a particularly significant addition to the known oeuvre of Freycinet, and attesting to his command of English. The manuscripts are as follows:1) 'Mémoire sur un Cercle de reflection perfectioné par Jh. De Mendoza Rios... (extrait des Transactions Philosophiques de 1801)...'. Nine page manuscript, 385 x 250 mm., three folded technical drawings on tracing paper loosely inserted, stitch-sewn, Archives de Laage stamp; excellent original condition. A fine and interesting manuscript on innovations in the method of using the reflecting circle, translated by Louis de Freycinet personally from its appearance in the London Philosophical Transactions.2) 'Mémoire sur quelques méthodes nouvelles de Calculer la longitude... Don Joseph de Mendoza y Rios Capne. De Vau. & c'. Three-and-a-half page manuscript, 380 x 250 mm., 4 blank pages conjugate; very good. Undated. Written in two differing hands, at least one page of this manuscript is in the hand of Louis de Freycinet. Mendoza y Rios was a Spanish contemporary of Freycinet's, and apparently actually a correspondent as well. His work on navigation was influential, particularly the improvements he made to the reflecting circle in 1816.3) 'Méthode pour trouver la Latitude par deux hauteur du soleil... Pour Mr. de Freycinet, Capne. De Frégate, Commandant de l'Uranie'. Manuscript of five-and-a-half pages, 340 x 220 mm.; very good. A particularly interesting manuscript with all manner of calculations, this can be dated quite firmly because it is actually addressed to Freycinet on board the Uranie (that is, circa 1817-1820). Material firmly associated with the voyage is, of course, of special importance.4) 'Théorie des Longitudes par P. Levêque Examinateur Hidrographie de la Marine'. Manuscript of 22 unnumbered pages, 220 x 178 pp., laid paper with "DJ" watermark, stitch-sewn with several blank sheets at end, Archives de Laage stamp, a few marks; very good. Methodology of measuring longitude through trigonometry etc., using "des Triangles sphérique". The latest date mentioned in the manuscript is An 6 (that is, circa 1799).5) 'Nouvelle methode de Calculer la longitude par les distances de la lune'. Manuscript of 7 pp., 215 x 170 mm., stitch-sewn, "Mons. Freycinet... de Caisse" manuscript note to front; very good. Using the lunar method of calculating longitude, this manuscript relates to the work done by Rios in 1795. Comments on Maskelyne, Borda, and others.

        A.L.s. to Mr. Cumberland

No place (but London?): no date (ca. 1820?) 2 pp., small 4to, written in brown ink on one side and addressed on the other with a watercolor drawing by Cruikshank. A tantalizing letter: addressed only to â??Mr. Cumberland,â? it is tempting to hope it might be George Cumberland, especially because the letter mentions a â??Mr. B,â? who one would like to think might be Blake but is probably Bewick. The letter reads (in part): â??If convenient please to send me the dust . . . have you any command please to write a few lines . . . will you request Mr. B to send me some word I have sent to him but have only one block back.â? Boldly signed â??R Ck.â? On the verso is written â??Mr. Cumberlandâ? beside a charming watercolor of an exceptionally portly gentleman in a hat and an exceptionally skinny figure doffing his hat (perhaps the artist importuning his patron?). A search of Blake Records failed to locate a single reference to Robert Cruikshank but, of course, hundreds to Cumberland. A more likely possibility is John Cumberland, the publisher whose Cumberlandâ??s Minor Theatre was illustrated by Cruikshank.

[Santiago. 1820].. Broadside, approximately 11 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches. In Spanish. Printed on light blue paper. Early folds. Ownership ink stamp between third and fourth lines of text, small numerical ink inscription in upper right corner. A few small holes, affecting only a few characters of text; chipping in upper right and lower left corners, with loss to six characters of text in the latter. White paper affixed to verso reinforcing two folds and areas of loss. Very light staining. A good copy. A stirring proclamation by South American liberator José de San Martín to the people of Chile shortly before his departure from that country for Peru. In 1820, two years after Chile declared and effectively won its independence from Spain, San Martín assembled a Pacific fleet to sail from Chile to Peru and aid in the struggle for independence there. The Chilean Navy's fleet of eight warships and sixteen transport ships set sail from Valparaíso on Aug. 20 and at Paracas, Peru on Sept. 7. San Martín's forces immediately attacked and seized the city of Pisco, beginning a long campaign of battle and diplomacy that helped lead to Peru's full liberation in 1824. The present broadside is signed in print by San Martín in Santiago, June 17, 1820. As he prepares for the journey to Peru, he calls on Chileans to keep peace and order during his absence and encourages patience with the young government. He concludes with a powerful declaration of the importance of the final stage of South America's fight for independence: "Compatriots! I am going to open the most memorable campaign of our revolution: on it hangs the consolidation of our destinies, the hopes of this vast continent, the fate of our families, the fortune of our friends, in short the sacred thing that is our honor. Entrusted in the justice of our cause, and under the protection of the Supreme Being, I promise you victory, and I do not doubt that she will crown...the perseverance of the brave ones who accompany me."         View of Hunter's River Newcastle New South Wales

London: Rudolph Ackermann, dated September 1, 1820. Engraved view measuring 230 x 335mm. (plate size), small closed tear affects upper blank margin (image entirely unaffected, now expertly repaired); very good with early handcolouring. Engraved by convict hands upon sheathing copper. A very early engraved view of the settlement at Newcastle, itself the extraordinary outcome of the fruitful relationship between two convict engravers, Walter Preston and Joseph Lycett, and the artistically talented army officer Major James Wallis. This plate forms the frontispiece of Wallis' fine album of Australian views titled An Historical Account of the Colony of New South Wales published by Ackermann in London in 1821. The plate was engraved by the convict artist Walter Preston whose considerable talents came to the attention of Major Wallis, then commander of the convict settlement at Newcastle. At the time, Newcastle enjoyed a fearsome reputation for as a place for secondary punishment and was described by a contemporary officer as 'the Hell of New South Wales'.For many years the attribution of Wallis as the artist of the views in An Historical Account of the Colony of New South Wales was a matter of historical conjecture (the implication being that he had appropriated the work of Preston and Lycett). However, the recent revelation of original watercolour material by Wallis establishes him as the artist. Not that this fact diminishes the achievement of the convict engravers: Preston was tasked with working upon the only copper sheets available, manufactured for sheathing the hulls of ships, a difficult material softer than standard engraving copper.Ultimately, both Preston and Lycett were pardoned by Macquarie on Wallis' recommendation, in no small part because of their work on this book. When Wallis departed Australia in 1819 he took the plates with him to London where this book was published by Ackermann, complete with an introductory history of the colony and a map of Port Macquarie by the surveyor John Oxley.

1832) und Tombelson (Views of the Rhine. Ask for an English description and further pictures via email.

A View of Dawes Battery at the Entrance of Sydney Cove

London: Rudolph Ackermann, dated September 1, 1820. Engraved view measuring 230 x 335mm. (plate size), small closed tear affects upper blank margin (image entirely unaffected, now expertly repaired); very good with early handcolouring. Engraved by convict hands upon sheathing copper. An early engraved view of Sydney Cove, itself the extraordinary outcome of the fruitful relationship between two convict engravers, Walter Preston and Joseph Lycett, and the artistically talented army officer Major James Wallis.

His sixth voyage was aboard a slave trading ship from Newport to Sierra Leone, and includes an account of a slave insurrection aboard ship. His narrative of his voyages ends at p. 78 and is followed by "The Experience & Remarkable Vision of John Benson", an account of his life after leaving the sea. "It will be perceived, by the author's preface, that this work was to have been published during his life time. His death, which took place soon after the completion of the manuscript, prevented his design. Mr. Benson having brought his narrative . to the conclusion of his voyages; it has been thought advisable by the publisher, to give a short account of his life from the above period, to the time of his death" (Note by the publisher, p. [5]). Published by the author's son, the final 8 pages include a list of subscribers, largely from Rhode Island. It has been suggested that the work was published either in Newport or Providence, with the publication date of 1818 suggested by Shaw & Shoemaker (though a slightly later date more likely given Benson's death in December of that year). According to Wendell Phillips Garrison, in his The Benson family of Newport, Rhode Island (1872), the narrative was published "prior to 1824" by the author's son, John Casey Benson, a cotton, woollen and silk manufacturer in Worcester County, Mass. Scarce, with no examples cited in the auction records and not listed in Huntress. Shaw & Shoemaker 43283; Handler 81; Beinecke Lesser Antilles 670. Not in Huntress. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

It's always difficult to age-estimate these bindings, but this looks like the high-house style binding Bayntun did for Southran's, circa 1900. In any event, bindings are bright red with straight-grain morocco leather and a lots of gilt. The spines are not at all sun damaged, but have darkened evenly just a touch, very nicely matching the boards. A handsome full morocco set with excellent color.
